Kidston Gold Mines, located in semi-arid North Queensland, Australia is currently in its closure phase. Highly innovative and comprehensive rehabilitation strategies were employed at the site, including the direct revegetation of the surface of the tailings storage; the construction of a tailings sediment entrapment pond; the construction of a spillway to drain large rainfall events from the surface of the tailings; the construction of store/release covers over the tops of the waste rock dumps; the sheeting with oxide waste rock of the waste rock dump slopes; the partial back-filling of the initial Wises Hill Pit with waste rock and thickened tailings produced from the subsequent Eldridge Pit; the partial flooding of Eldridge Pit following the end of mining; and the construction of wetland systems to treat contaminated tailings and waste rock dump seepage. These closure strategies involved the careful consideration of water management. Specific water management issues included understanding the water balance of the tailings dam; the operation of the tailings dam sediment entrapment pond and spillway; understanding the water balance of the store/release waste rock dump covers; the importance and sustainability of vegetation on the tailings, store/release waste rock dump covers, and on the sheeted waste rock dump slopes; the level and quality of water in the partially flooded Eldridge Pit; and the treatment of contaminated seepage in the constructed wetlands. The seasonal and highly variable rainfall experienced in this semi-arid climate posed a number of challenges for the management of water on the site post-closure. The paper details these challenges and highlights how they were resolved over the period leading up to and following the end of mining.

To maintain copper recoveries and maximise production at the Sepon Copper Operation it is crucial to control the amount of copper entering the leaching circuit. This requires close control of blending of the multiple ROM stockpiles to achieve the desired head grade. Grade variability in the ROM stockpiles can lead to significant variation in the processing plant copper feed grade.Head grade sampling from the milling circuit at Sepon is complicated due to milling in leach solution to preserve the water balance. Copper is present in both liquid and solid forms and copper in the added milling solution has to be accounted for. This leads to difficulties in manual head sampling which also introduces delays due to sample preparation and assay turnaround. On-stream analysis is complex because of the solution and solid copper and the need to account for recycled copper solution.This paper describes the complexity of feed grade management at Sepon and the application of on-belt analyser technology to assist in the control of copper metal throughput.

The porphyry copper minerals of Melanesia occur within a host of narrow veinlets in predominantly quartz diorite stocks or as contact metasomatic masses in skarns adjacent to the intrusion. Some 90 per cent of the constituent minerals comprise pyrite or marcasite, chalcopyrite, and magnetite with the remainder mainly bornite and hematite with accessory rutile and chalcocite together with several trace minerals. Gold is found mainly as inclusions in chalcopyrite, and minor molybdenite occurs likewise.Of particular significance is the persistent occurrence of accessory rutile of hydrothermal origin intimately intergrown with chalcopyrite. The rutile occurs relatively late in the hydrothermal sequence and upon weathering of the deposit may be released on a cumulative basis possibly in sufficient amounts to constitute a particulate pathfinder mineral which may aid in prospecting.Rutile is present in all the Melanesian occurrences studied and is also prominent in several American deposits.The porphyry copper mineralogy is characterized by the presence of accessory hydrothermal rutile intergrown with chalcopyrite.

IN this paper an attempt is made to describe the sluicing operations on the tin fields of north-eastern Tasmania. No claim is made to completeness, for much of the ground has already been covered, and nothing is to be gained by needless repetition. Pre-drainage experiments have been conduct- ed at Appin, Cook, John Darling, Leichhardt, Macquarie, Metropolitan and Moura No. 2 Collieries. Appin (550 m deep) experiences particular gas problems in development drivages, and the almost pure CH4 seam gas makes difficult tiro compliance with statutory maxima in intakes and returns. Patterns of 43 mm diameter drain- a,.;e holes drilled ahead and laterally into virgin coal have improved gas conditions in working places and have allowed tolerable advance rates. Cook, Leichhardt, Metropolitan and Moura No,. 2 Collieries have experienced gas and stress phenomena ranging from conical bursts less than one tonne to full scale instantan- -us outbursts of hundreds of tonnes with tens ,f thousands of cubic metres of seam gas. The IsaMillÖ is challenging the way that plants are designed and operated. This paper challenges existing designs of concentrator flow sheets, particularly focusing on magnetite circuits.   From what has started out as a small scale ultra fine grinding mill in the pharmaceutical and pigment industries, it has been redesigned and improved upon for mineral processing, and has been the mainstay of fine grinding applications for over ten years. These applications have required energy efficient grinding to succeed, and have been predominately in the base metals industry.   Further development of the IsaMillÖ has now resulted in the machines being able to treat larger tonnages, with higher capacity motors. This development, along with the introduction of purpose designed ceramic media, has allowed the mill to treat courser feed sizes. At the same time, the mill still offers highly efficient grinding, and has enabled it to be operated in coarser tertiary and secondary grinding applications.   The acceptance of the mill in coarser applications, predominately in base metals and PGM applications, has enabled the IsaMillÖ to be a serious contender for beneficiation in other minerals. One such application is the potential for IsaMillsÖ to be part of magnetite flow sheets, which are being considered in Australia to meet the growing iron demand of China. The high energy efficiency of the IsaMillÖ compared to conventional technologies, as well as the smaller infrastructure requirements, provides a great opportunity to reduce the power intensity of magnetite circuits.   This paper will examine the use of IsaMillÖ technology in conventional grinding applications, including recent testwork in a primary grinding base metal circuit, as well as testwork on magnetite ore comparing a lab scale IsaMillÖ with a lab scale Tower Mill.   The growing demand for minerals over the next decade, coupled with higher energy cost, will result in energy efficient technology, such as the IsaMillÖ, being included in standard circuit design.

At Hilton Mine, 18 kilometres north of Mount Isa, the silver-lead-zinc sulphide bodies have undergone strong deformation in the form of folding and later faulting and brecciation in the hangingwall region of the mine. Variation in grades and widths over compara- tively short distances causes problems regarding accurate sampling of orebody exposures in underground development, and in defining confidence limits for the extrapolation of ore intersections in ore reserve calculations. The paper gives a preliminary insight into the problem of obtaining representative samples for exposed orebodies and discusses the sampling techniques employed. Results gained from these sampling methods could not be verified due to lack of individual bulk samples for comparison but strong evidence for precision was provided. INTRODUCTION In a developing mine like Hilton, accurate grade information is of extreme importance. Original grade information for a potentially viable ore deposit is gained from surface drilling, and initial ore estimates are calculated from the resultant ore widths and grades. WaihiÆs Cornish Pumphouse is located on the edge of town in a dynamic and changeable area where history affects the future. As in any successful project, ingenuity and team work have been significant factors in the planning and implementation of the buildingÆs relocation.   Work around the Pumphouse site commenced circa 1900 with preparation to sink the No 5 shaft. Construction of the pumphouse and the steam driven C pump was completed by 1904 with hints of what was to come evident in 1905 as the No5 Shaft collar had sunk 350mm in four years. By 1907 surface cracking developed over the Milking Cow cave area and in 1913 200 mm was cut off the main pumping rod as the ground was sinking at a rate of 25 mm per year.   In 1913 ground around No 6 shaft had subsided 600 mm.It was also the end of an era as steam gave way to hydroelectricity and electric pumps replaced the C Pump. C Pump was maintained as a backup from 1913 to 1929 and then finally scrapped. 25 years of underground caving operations removed approximately 400 000 cubic metres of ore leaving a 7 ha collapse crater that eventually became known as the mine lake.   On the edge of town a tension zone over the Royal Lode began to develop 50 m diameter chimney collapses as large scale blocks relaxed into unfilled stopes in the old Martha underground mine. After the 1999 collapse part of the main street was closed and after the 2001 collapse Hazard Zones were declared, more streets closed and areas evacuated and retired from residential use.   By 1984 the Pumphouse has approximately one degree of tilt and in 2002 tilt on the Pumphouse accelerated briefly and then settled down. Tilt accelerated again late in 2004 and a scoping study was initiated to define protection options for the pumphouse. The Martha Mining Licence requires Newmont to 'Take whatever precautions are necessary to protect the old Cornish Pumphouse adjacent to No5 shaft' and viable solutions needed to found.   Any work on the Pumphouse comes standard with a wide range of stakeholders, governing agencies and legal framework to consider. Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) is owner and administrator of the pumphouse.

The evaluation of historical goldfields is currently topical, reflecting a high gold price, improvements in knowledge and technology. and lack of greenfield sites. Many goldfields comprise narrow gold-quartz veins which are structurally complex with an irregular distribution of gold; variable geometry and architecture; and display late deformational effects. The study of historical mine records can be an important tool during early and advanced project evaluation since it contributes to understanding the orebody, exploration target size and setting expectations. The historic Engineer Mine property is located 32 km west of Atlin, British Columbia on the east side of Tagish Lake. The economically important Engineer and Double Decker veins belong to a NNE-SSW vein set. These are narrow, commonly <2 m dilational veins with a minor sinistral strike component and of an epithermal type. Documented ore production between 1910 - 1952 is recorded as approximately 14 263 t at 39.4 g/t Au and 19.5 g/t Ag (for 18 000 oz Au and 8950 oz Ag). The underground workings consist of about 5500 m of tunnels, shafts, raises and stopes over eight levels. The mine is currently being re-evaluated. In 2011, an Inferred Mineral Resource of 41 000 t at 19 g/t Au for 25 000 oz Au (at a 5 g/t Au cut-off) was defined from historical data supported by modern drilling into the Engineer and Double Decker veins. Quantitative mineralogy is an established discipline in the geosciences and is aimed at providing mineral grade and texture information for geological and mineral processing applications. The two core technologies underpinning Quantitative Mineralogical Analysis (QMA) are Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) in combination with Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). Technologies such as QEMSCAN and MLA are now routinely used to optimise the performance of large-scale mineral processing plants in the base and precious metal sectors. One of the major disadvantages of the QMA methods used today is extensive sample preparation requirements which make application of this technique to real-time mineralogical characterization not feasible. A breakthrough has been achieved by the National Research Council Canada in collaboration with CRC ORE by developing a novel Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) based technology capable of real-time mineralogical characterization of process streams without sample preparation. The potential applications of this technology include, but not limited to, in-pit muck piles, underground draw points, cross-belt analysis as well as slurries. This paper describes the development of the LIBS-based technology from a proof-of-concept (TRL2) to the construction of a prototype sensor and its validation in a simulated environment (TRL5). Future work is being planned to test and further validate the LIBS sensor on a mine-site which will progress the technology to its next readiness level (TRL6).

This paper deals with the modernisation of the brakes on an electrically coupled Blair multi-rope hoist and covers the removal of the old calliper brakes and hydraulic control system, and its replacement with brake discs, disc braking units and hydraulic control systems. The paper covers the braking requirements of the hoist, which is made up of two electrically coupled single-drum hoists, together with the theory behind the choice of brakes and control systems supplied. The paper also covers the project logistics that were required in order to install and commission the new brakes and control systems with the minimum disruption to production on the only rock hoist on a major production shaft. Items covered include the modifications to civil works, pre-installation of bearing lubrication systems, brake discs and hydraulics and the interfacing of the new hydraulic control system to the existing electric control system. It had to be designed to be compatible to a new electric drive and control system due for installation at the end of 2005.

The development of novel technologies capable of real-time, high-accuracy, automated analysis of gold, other precious metals and mineralogy, both in ore samples and directly on process streams is reported.X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis is widely used for process stream monitoring of base metals. However, detection limits are generally a few parts-per-million (ppm) or larger, precluding the use of this method for monitoring precious metals. Complex interferences with other elements also limit accuracy. An XRF slurry analyser that uses advanced data-analysis techniques to resolve overlapping fluorescence lines, achieving detection limits in the parts-per-billion (ppb) range has been developed. This allows feed, concentrate and tailings streams in precious metal applications to be monitored in real-time. An extended trial of our technology in a platinum group element concentrator and laboratory tests on gold process slurries in the 0.1 - 2.0 ppm concentration range is discussed.Analysis of process stream mineralogy can provide useful information to supplement conventional elemental data. An on-stream X-ray diffraction analysis technique that provide real-time mineral and elemental measurement of process slurry streams has been developed. Both X-ray techniques can be combined into a single on-stream analyser to provide simultaneous elemental and mineralogical information. The successful trial of a combined XRDF (X-ray diffraction and fluorescence) slurry analyser is also reported.It is widely recognised that rapid, accurate analysis of grade is an essential prerequisite for optimising the efficiency of exploration, mining and processing of metals ores. The low grades of precious metals ores, such as gold and the platinum group elements, have led to fire assay becoming the predominant analysis technique. Significant drawbacks of fire assay include long turn-around times, limited absolute accuracy, high costs and requirement for skilled operating staff. For rapid measurement of gold samples, a technique that allows the gold content of large samples to be determined absolutely with high accuracy in less than two minutes using activation with high-energy X-rays has been developed. The method is non-destructive, has detection limits in the low ppb range, is capable of measuring slurries, ground or crushed solids with minimal preparation and can be made fully automatic. "Basin Minerals Limited commenced exploring for conventional strandline hosted mineral sands (rutile, ilmenite and zircon) deposits in the Murray Basin in April 1997. This has resulted in the discovery of a major mineral sands field in the Douglas Project area, located southwest of Horsham in the Wimmera Region of Western Victoria. After the successful completion of a pre-feasibility study on these deposits in September 2000, the Douglas Project has advanced to bankable final feasibility study. This study should be completed by mid-2002 to allow a decision to commence production in 2003 at an expected rate of in excess of 500 000 tonnes of combined mineral sands products per annum. The field comprises several mineralised strandlines. The main ones of economic interest are from west to east, the four strandlines, Acapulco, Bondi, Bondi East and Echo. These strandlines at August, 2000 contain total Inferred Resources of 443 million tonnes at 4.7 per cent HM at a one per cent HM cut-off; ie 20.8 million tonnes of heavy mineral concentrate which in turn contains 11.3 million tonnes of ilmenite and leucoxene, 1.3 million tonnes of rutile and 1.6 million tonnes of zircon. The heavy mineral concentrate is coarse-grained with mean diameter grain size of the strandline deposits ranging from 130 to 160 microns in size. Major controls on the formation of mineral sands deposits in the Murray Basin are discussed with reference to the main mineral sand bearing, strand plain domains; the Central Strand Plain, the New South Wales Strand Plain and the West Wimmera Strand Plain. The Douglas Project deposits on the West Wimmera Strand Plain domain are characterised by wide zones of mineralisation with high-grade cores (>10 per cent HM), low stripping ratios, and a valuable economic heavy mineral suite comprising 60 to 80 per cent of heavy mineral concentrate. Constituent mineralogy of the heavy mineral concentrate of the overall deposits is; ilmenite (40 to 58 per cent), leucoxene (five to seven per cent), rutile (four to ten per cent) and zircon (four to 14 per cent). The Douglas Project Area appears to be endowed with significantly enhanced levels of heavy minerals compared to other areas of the Murray Basin due to its unique palaeo-geographical position. Long shore drift to the south of the basin has caused large quantities of heavy mineral to be trapped against the palaeo-cliffs and headlands of a rugged palaeo-coastline which includes in a major embayment, the Grampian Mountains, the Black Range and the Glenelg Complex. To the east, major faulting and uplift has brought the fine-grained WIM offshore deposits close to the surface and has resulted in erosional stripping of mineralised strandline deposits. This mineralisation has been recycled and reconcentrated within the younger strandlines to the west within the adjacent Douglas Project Area. These strandlines are thought to be younger than other mineralised strandlines discovered to-date in the Murray Basin. The Project Area strandlines are described; ie their morphology, geology and patterns of mineral distribution. The mineralogy of each of the strandlines is distinctive and variations are noted along strike and section."

The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. Troy Resources NL acquired a 70 per cent interest in the Mina Sertpo gold project in Goißs State, Brazil, in 2001 following a successful bid for the highly competitive international tender of a tenement package put out by Western Mining Corporation (WMC). The Sertpo deposit is located on cleared grazing land 380 km west of Brasilia and is 30 per cent owned by Amazonia Mineracao Ltda, a private Brazilian company. It is a small high grade open-pittable orebody with a measured and indicated resource of 108 000 tonnes at a grade of 49.7 g/t for 172 500 ounces using a 2.0 g/t cut-off. Troy undertook the project management and development of the project while Amazonia managed the exploration activities and provided other services as required. The project development involved drilling metallurgical test holes, scouring the world to locate an available and suitable second-hand plant, and arranging shipping to andreconstruction in Brazil.

The Mont Reed iron ore deposit, owned by ArcelorMittal, is situated approximately 140 km southwest of the Mont-Wright mine in the southern region of the Labrador Trough, Canada. Acquired by Québec Cartier Mining (QCM) in the 1960s, the Mont Reed mining property has remained unexploited due to the complex nature of the ore in the area. However, during the last years ArcelorMittal’s R&D team has been dedicated to developing a process to beneficiate the Mont Reed ore and produce high-quality pellet feed suitable for direct reduction furnaces. Extensive research revealed that achieving a good liberation degree of particles required grinding the material below 75 μm (P80 of 53 μm). To find the most effective technology for this task, a detailed comparison between ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding was conducted. Both grinding technologies underwent detailed testing in bench-scale experiments. The ground products were comprehensively characterised, including size distribution analysis and chemical analysis per size fraction. Additionally, liberation analysis was performed using an automated scanning electron microscope (SEM). To determine the grinding specific energy, a method previously developed at Samarco (Brazil) for fine grinding of iron ores was employed. Furthermore, magnetic separation and flotation tests were conducted on the ground products. After a thorough evaluation of all the results, it was observed that both ball mill and vertical stirred mill grinding produced samples with similar physical characteristics. However, the vertical mill demonstrated higher efficiency in grinding the material. To conclude the study, an economic evaluation was conducted for both options considering various factors. Overall, ArcelorMittal’s R&D team’s dedicated efforts have brought them closer to unlocking the potential of the Mont Reed ore deposit and paving the way for its future utilisation to the production of high-quality pellet feed.

The performance of in situ, shallow water covers in controlling acid generation was evaluated at four recently decommissioned pyritic uranium tailings sites at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings are acid generating, having a pyrite content of approximately five to ten per cent and a very low to non-existent alkaline buffering capacity. Adverse market conditions led to the closure of all operating uranium mines in the early- to mid-1990s, followed by rehabilitation and decommissioning of mine and waste management facilities. In order to control acidic drainage, all new and active tailings areas at Denison, Quirke, Panel, Spanish-American and Stanleigh mine sites were re-engineered to provide in situ submersion of these tailings under shallow water covers. The tailings impoundment dams were upgraded and reinforced or in some cases reconstructed, to minimise seepages and provide a minimum 1 m depth of water cover. With the exception of Stanleigh mine, which was closed in 1996 and rehabilitated during the late-1990s, the water covered Tailings Management Areas (TMAs) at other sites have been in operation for a period of six to nine years. The surface water quality at these sites is maintained at near neutral pH conditions by periodic addition of lime slurry to the established water covers. Additional treatment of effluent is provided as required to meet the discharge water quality standards. The performance of the established water covers at the sites was evaluated by analysing the annual equivalent limestone consumption data. The results were compared with the performance of an older, decommissioned Nordic TMA, which was rehabilitated using revegetation techniques. The water covers at these sites are performing as designed and acid generation has been reduced to low levels. Based on the total amount of yearly equivalent limestone required to maintain water quality in the water cover and at the effluent treatment plant, it is concluded that acid generation rate at the Denison TMA has reduced to less than 0.15 per cent of its pre-water cover conditions during normal operation and rehabilitation periods. In comparison to the revegetated Nordic TMA, the acid generation rates at Denison and Panel TMAs have decreased to less than 1.6 per cent of that at the Nordic TMA. The acid generation rate at the Quirke TMA was comparable or only slightly lower than that at the Nordic TMA because of its unique terraced cell configuration, having tailings in five hydraulically interconnected cells at different elevations. Historic acidity and oxidation reaction products, accumulated during normal operating and pre-water cover periods, are flushing from upstream locations to downstream cells, thus requiring much higher equivalent limestone additions for acid neutralisation and effluent treatment.

In this study, a systematic examination of the scale and variety of micro-structures in coal using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) has been carried out, using coal samples of differing stages of coalification from the Bowen Basin and New Zealand. SEM provides detail of various micro-structural features and shows that a variety of micron-sized fractures and cavities are present in coals. These are differentiated into three pore types: fracture porosity, phyteral porosity and matrix porosity. Fracture porosity is generally associated with bright coals (although it has been shown that micro-fractures are present in maceral fragments from the dull coal layers). Characteristically the macro- and micro- fractures form a continuous structural fabric through the bright coal layers and thus make a significant contribution to overall permeability. The macro- and micro-fractures appear to have been formed during the process of coalification rather than being formed due to shrinkage during methane extraction, as most of them are infilled with secondary minerals. In contrast, phyteral and matrix porosity is associated with the dull coal layers that are composed of plant fragments or a heterogeneous mixture of macerals. Like the macro- and micro-fractures, the continuity of the observed cavities suggest that these too are a significant contribution to overall permeability, and therefore play a major role in the transmissibility of methane at a level between diffusion at the micropore level and laminar flow at the macro-fracture level. Due to different spacing, orientation and persistence of individual fractures and cavities, the rate of methane transmissibility through a coalseam will vary according to coal rank, coal type and the organic precursors from which the coal was derived. This is important as a knowledge of the micro-structure system and its relationship to coal type and coal rank, plays an important consideration in: a) gas drainage modelling, b) enhancing permeability by inducing fractures and c) predicting the occurrence of outbursts.

The Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Resource Processing (CSRP) is undertaking a large research project involving partners from industry, universities and government, which aims to develop the necessary chemical and structural understanding of geopolymer materials made from waste products for them to be used to capture a significant market share of the concrete business for a given industrial region. We are investigating the suitability of a range of soluble silica-bearing waste streams for use as geopolymer concrete feedstocks. In order to utilise a variety of waste streams, either singly or blended, an understanding of the role of secondary metal ions (Fe, Ca, Mg, Ti, etc) in the geopolymerisation process is essential. A range of experimental and analytical techniques is therefore being used to better understand the structure-chemistry-property relationships of geopolymers. Currently, we are investigating geopolymers made from a variety of waste streams (fly ash, kaolinite, red mud, etc) available in the Kwinana Industrial Region, Western Australia. This paper will detail how the basic scientific research underpinning the project is vital if waste streams of varying composition are to be successfully used in a commercial concrete product and the regional synergies required to develop geopolymers from waste streams.

Concentrator plants intake the ore from the mine and produce concentrates by extracting valuable minerals in a succession of process steps. Controlling the extraction process and detecting changes in the process requires updated information on a minute basis. Moreover, due to economical reasons, one must also collect metallurgical samples on a daily basis for monthly reporting.In this paper, we present how slurry samplers were installed in a Cu-Ni flotation plant to accomplish the aforementioned tasks. An on-stream elemental analyser at the plant is used for flotation process control by taking samples from selected process streams. Two process streams, the flotation feed and tail, are also equipped with metallurgical samplers. The metallurgical samplers were designed to have low head loss, be robust and easy to maintain and to collect slurry samples in a reliable way for the metallurgical accounting.Samples were collected by different sampler types and we discuss the uncertainty arising from sampling in the assays. Variographic analysis was carried out on the process data in order to find periodic components in the process, and estimate the correct number of shift sample increments and measurement error components. The metallurgical samplers were proven to be reliable devices with zero downtime and no sanding issues in the main process flows. In addition, we show that the tail measurement is the most important one for the plant recovery calculation, which emphasises the importance of the sampling accuracy in the tail stream.CITATION:Lohilahti, J, Korpela, T, Minkkinen, P and McPherson, B, 2014.
