This paper discusses the factors that contribute to the cost effective design of a concentrator. Concentrator design and layout outcomes are functions of the team (engineer’s and owner’s) participating in each particular project. The benchmark for relatively modest projects was set in the 1980s and 1990s during the ‘gold boom’ when numerous cost effective plants were designed and constructed on a lump sum basis in a very competitive market. A number of factors contribute to lack of transference of the lessons learnt in gold plant design to concentrator design including established paradigms in the design and layout of concentrators, lack of experience in cost effective design, operator’s preferences for flowsheet and layout and simple lack of appreciation of the impact of plant footprint on materials quantities and resultant capital costs.Experiences with recent copper concentrator projects (both small and large) are used as case studies.

The two methods for calibrating the parameters K and (alpha) for use in Gy’s equation for the fundamental sampling error (FSE), the duplicate sampling analysis (DSA) and the segregation fractionalised analysis (SFA) are described in detail. A case study using identical broken reef material from a Witwatersrand-type orebody is calibrated using the DSA and SFA methods and the results are compared. Classically, the form of Gy’s equation for the FSE raises the nominal size of fragments given by dN to a power of 3. Gy’s formula is a theoretical formula applicable in the case when fragments are randomly collected one by one, which is obviously never the case. This is because the fragment shape factor (f) and the granulometric factor (g) were introduced to take care of this anomaly. More recent formulae, such as those suggested by François-Bongarçon and Lyman, are empirically based formula. A later modification of Gy’s formula raises dN to the power ? (alpha), the latter term being calibrated with the coefficient K in the DSA and SFA methods. The preferred value of ? (alpha) for low-grade gold ores used by sampling practitioners in the mining industry is 1.5. A review of calibration experiments for low-grade gold ores using the DSA and SFA methods has produced values of K that vary between 70 and 170 and values of alpha in the range 0.97 to 1.30. The average value for alpha is found to be 1, rather than 3 as originally proposed in the classic form of Gy’s equation or the industry preference for 1.5. It is suggested that for low-grade gold bearing ores, the equation for the FSE should raise dN to a power of 1. Such an equation for the variance of the combined FSE plus the grouping and segregation error, now referred to as the short-term component of the quality fluctuation error (QFE1), greatly simplifies the characterisation of gold ores, which now only requires the calibration of K for a given mass and established fragment size. The implications for the heterogeneity test from the generalised equation are that provided the fragments have been screened to within a narrow size range, any particular size will return a value for K that is acceptable for use in the sampling nomogram.CITATION:Minnitt, R C A, 2017. DeGrussa Copper Mine, resource status 10.2 Mt at 5.7 per cent Cu, 2.1 g/t Au (Sandfire Resources, 2013), commenced concentrate production through its 1.5 Mt/a conventional copper flotation processing plant in September 2012. Geometallurgical assessment during the feasibility study identified potential process-critical ore factors that required further investigation to determine potential impact on processing. Ore characterisation and metallurgical processing performance test work of ore types ensued and subsequently, the first quantitative DeGrussa geometallurgy model was born. Now one year into steady state production, the geometallurgical program has evolved significantly from its infancy and provides valuable insight into ore characterisation and behaviour in the processing plant. Quang Ninh province is the most significant coal producing region in the north of Vietnam. The Nui Beo Coal Company (NBCC) operates open pit mines in Quang Ninh province and the waste overburden produced is dumped as sidehill fill in the Chinh Bac waste dump site. In the past, no special consideration has been given to the environmental impacts during the dumping operations. The mine waste is transported in trucks from the mine site to the dumping site and the loading, hauling and dumping operations are the main sources of dust emission. Rain events, especially during the rainy season, cause the generation of contaminated surface water as well as seepage of water through the dump at a number of locations. The existence of cracks at the top of the dump can pose serious stability problems with heavy rain events leading to failure of slopes which can potentially disturb vast areas of land currently used for agricultural purposes and human settlement. For sustainable development at the Chinh Bac waste dump site in the future, apart from the social and economic considerations to be assessed, there is an absolute necessity for environmental protection measures to be in place both during and after the dumping of the mine waste overburden. Research Association Mining and Environment in Vietnam (RAME) is working to develop and implement concepts for the mitigation of environmental problems emerging from dust, contaminated water and lacking slope stability to ensure successful rehabilitation of the coal mine waste dumps in the north of Vietnam. Within the framework of RAME, the Institute of Mining Engineering I (RWTH Aachen University) is managing and working to develop the stabilisation concepts for the solid mine waste dump in collaboration with the Chair of Geotechnical Engineering (RWTH Aachen University), Brenk Systemplanung and the Vietnamese group of companies VINACOMIN (Vietnam National Coal-Mineral Industries Group). The most economical and environmentally sound operations, as well as locally adaptable environmental protection measures, are essential for the sustainable development of the dumping operations at Chinh Bac dump. This paper describes the dump site and the sustainable development possibilities with an emphasis on the environmental protection and stability problems at the Chinh Bac waste dump.

After a short presentation of the Division of Mining at the Royal Insti- tute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden, the author presents some of-the fill research carried out at the Division. Literature surveys and testing methods and equipment are described. The use of flocculants' in hydraulic filling has been tested both in laboratory and in mines and the results are very promi- sing. Finally compressibility investi- gations and some finite element calcu- lations are presented.

"Approximately 32 per cent of the worldÆs total gold production has come from greenstone belts (Frimmel, 2008). In these regions numerous small to large, quartz vein-associated gold deposits are hosted in metamorphic rocks ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. Historical exploration has focused its efforts on rocks of greenschist to lower amphibolite facies because these seem to contain the most deposits. Consequently, these regions are now reaching mature brownfield status, particularly in developed nations, and finding new deposits is becoming progressively more difficult. In comparison, regions of similar tectonic setting, but instead containing high-grade metamorphic rocks of mid-amphibolite to granulite facies, have received little attention because the first explorers found fewer deposits there.However, these regions certainly do contain some very significant gold deposits such as Hemlo in Canada (~684 t Au), Renco in Zimbabwe (~31 t Au mined since 1980), the very profitable Challenger deposit in South Australia (~36 t Au; recovered + reserve + resource), and the most recently discovered Tropicana deposit in Western Australia (~182 t Au; reserve + resource). High-grade metamorphic terrains therefore offer explorationists an excellent opportunity to move onto relatively green fields within developed nations, which carry less risk associated with development. However, explorationists have comparatively little knowledge of the geological controls on gold distribution in high-grade terranes because: industry experience lies in traditional lode-style gold deposits these gold deposits are geologically more complex there has simply been minimal research conducted on these deposits as a holistic group.Furthermore, research conducted in the last five years has shown us that the previous widely accepted model for gold genesis in these terranes, the crustal continuum model, is incorrect. Here, I discuss features from several gold deposits hosted in high-grade metamorphic rocks and use these to define two categories for explorationists to consider: deposits that formed prior to peak metamorphism (metamorphosed gold deposits) deposits that formed well after peak metamorphism (post-metamorphic gold deposits). In August 1996 a Microseismic Monitoring System developed by ISS International Limited was installed at the Pasminco Broken Hill Mine -Southern Cross area. The project aims were to:Assist in daily safety management in a mine environment which exhibits one of the highest occurrences of microseismic activity recorded in the Australian mining industry. Be used as a proactive tool in design of future development and stoping. The project to-date has been an unqualified success in achieving both goals. Consequently the system is being expanded from 6 to 14 monitoring sites.

Tube bundle monitoring systems have come a long way from their first introduction to coal mining in the late 1960s/1970s. Early developments in the United Kingdom (UK) commenced with single gas analysers (carbon monoxide) and quickly moved towards introducing oxygen analysers and methane analysers for improved analysis, in particular the calculation of air-free results. Recommendations were made in the early days as to how and where to run tubes and on the matching of sample pump and purge pump pressures. Current Australian installations are commonly based on a four-gas multianalyser, infrared for carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and methane, and paramagnetic for oxygen. These systems are controlled with programmable logic controllers (PLC), with component monitoring as an integral part of the software. This paper discusses the development of tube bundle systems from the 1960s to the current date and looks at the advantages and disadvantages of the installations, along with making operational recommendations to be considered with the siting of the analyser building, running of tubes and maintenance of the system.CITATION:Watkinson, M, 2015. What is the meaning of the Life of a Mine (LOM) if that mine results in a requirement for water treatment in perpetuity? ‘In perpetuity’ is of course a duration with no relationship to a Life-of-Mine or what might rightly be regarded by external stakeholders as a fair and reasonable post-mine recovery period. It exceeds the life span of investors, mine managers and governments, indeed even of capital markets as we know them, and of corporate and individual memories.In mine and mine closure planning, decisions are usually based at least to a significant extent on traditional economic analysis underlain by discounted cash flows (DCF). For investments in income-producing facilities, such as mining development and equipment, and ore-processing plant and equipment, this analysis reflects commercial reality and allows for comparison of competing investments. However, for environmental and social infrastructure, the same analysis using the same input parameters, especially the discount rate applied to cash flows, can lead to a bias against the adoption of best practices for non-investor stakeholders. SpaDiSÖ is a revolutionary approach to the spatial analysis of point data using geometry to analyse geometry! SpaDiSÖ uses each and every spatial relationship and is not dependent on mathematical models. For n points there are n2 û n spatial relationships and, because of the square function, the method yields interpretable results for both small and large data sets. SpaDiSÖ is an alternative to variography for directional studies. At the regional scale, the analysis can assess distribution patterns of mineralisation and potential controlling structures. At the deposit scale, the characteristics of zones of mineralisation such as direction, spacing, high-grade ore direction and grade distribution can all be deduced.

The current suite of bulk mining explosives has been available to the industry for over 20 years. The flexibility and performance of ammonium nitrate based emulsion blend explosives were accepted by the mining industry in the early 1980s. These water resistant explosives rapidly displaced the water gels and slurries developed during the previous two decades. However, since the 1980s there has been no equivalent step change to the basic formulation or application of bulk explosives, although there has been a continuous process of refinement with respect to stability, handling characteristics and most significantly, cost. In the 1980s explosives supply contracts were awarded based on technical evaluations, usually accompanied by field trials. Technical personnel from both mining companies and explosives suppliers dominated the negotiations and there was a strong focus on explosive energy and blasting requirements. Today, explosives from alternative suppliers are difficult to differentiate on the basis of energy so the focus has shifted to aspects of service and price û bulk mining explosives are now largely treated as a commodity and the negotiations are dominated by commercial personnel. Commercial pressures from large mining companies have seen a substantial reduction in the real price of explosives. However, this has come at a cost. In order to reduce manufacturing costs, emulsion formulations have changed. In general they are not only cheaper, but also less energetic. Powder factors have had to increase to achieve the same blasting results, especially in hard ground. It is debatable whether the mining companies have achieved all of the economies they were seeking. This paper discusses these issues and argues that the mining industry would benefit from taking a more technically driven approach to meeting their blasting requirements. Recent trends towards more open contracts between the mining companies and their suppliers can be extended to explosives. To achieve this, mining companies will need to acquire sufficient technical knowledge to take a more pro-active approach to specify the characteristics of the explosives required to maximise the economic performance of their operations.

Underground mine ventilation is now com monly simulated on a digital computer. Such a programme, incorporating natural ventilation has been modified by others to account for methane emission and elevated local tempera- tures. At Wollongong University, the pro- gramme was further developed and extensive interactive graphics incorporated such that any view of the three dimensional mine could be viewed, and superimposed upon that view are areas where a nominated parameter has exceeded a particular value - generally at a nominated time after a particular event and usually a fire/explosion of one type or another. A further programme was developed such that up to 20 'times' could be examined at a particu- lar location after say, a fuel rich fire at some other place in the mine. The output from this programme includes a plot of methane 1, smoke 1, temperature, pressure and air flow versus time - a most useful graphic to observe the limits of safe attendance in a particular Airway.

Although most New Zealand coals are low in ash, there are situations where high ash coals could be won. Not all high ash coals can be upgraded by physical means, since the ash is either inherent in the coal or bound in such a way to make its physical removal either impractical or uneconomic. Nevertheless, the authors believe, the situations where high amounts of ash can be economically removed by physical means to make a saleable product are considerable.

Traditional methods involve pumping water to secondary treatment facilities for neutralisation, which is costly and poses operational and environmental risks. In response to these challenges, the Professional Mine Water Action Plan (PMAP) introduces a revolutionary approach that combines cutting-edge AI technology and environmentally friendly reagents for in situ neutralisation of acidic wastewater. PMAP leverages magnesium-based slowrelease reagents and AI-driven intelligent dispensing systems to optimise treatment processes within the tailing pond itself. The unmanned smart dispensing vessel (USDV) conducts bathymetry to gather data on water quality and hydrography, allowing the system to determine the appropriate reagent quantity and injection strategy. This approach transforms the tailing pond into virtual reaction columns, enabling individual and simultaneous water treatment while optimising efficiency. Direct ship iron ore (DSO) operations at Extension Hill in Western Australia’s Midwest region have commenced, with fi rst product railed to the port of Geraldton in July 2011. Reserves are 14.8 million tonnes (Mt) of haematite-goethite ore overlying an Archaean BIF-hosted larger magnetite deposit which Mount Gibson Iron Limited (MGI) sold to other parties in 2006.Some unique geological aspects of the deposit shape DSO mining and processing operations. Owner-operator selective mining, blending, crushing and screening on site will produce three million tonnes per year (Mt/a) of Lump and Fines product to be trucked 86 km to Perenjori, railed 232 km to Geraldton, and loaded aboard Panamax-sized ships through the dedicated iron ore shiploader at the Geraldton Port Authority’s Berth 5 facility.The statutory approvals process for this project formally began in 2004, dominating delays in a predevelopment phase which extended over a longer period than the likely life of DSO operations. The lack of transparency, uncertainties and costs inherent in state government processes have influenced decisions made by MGI while assessing other development opportunities in Western Australia. Potential for additional Reserves exists at Extension Hill, however MGI’s ability to extend the mine life will hinge on statutory approval to explore for and evaluate other DSO resources on surrounding granted mining leases.The nature of the resource and use of existing infrastructure for product transport have enabled MGI to keep operating costs and capital intensity of this project relatively low. A tenacious development approach by MGI and robust project economics have fi nally enabled this site to take its place as a revenue earner beside the company’s other DSO operations at Tallering Peak and Koolan Island.

Yellow phosphorus (YP) has been commercially produced since the 1920s. First in the USA by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), next in Russian (Kazakhstan) in the 1950s, and finally in China in the late 1970s and early 1980s. There are operations in Vietnam and Sarawak on a smaller scale. YP has become very in vogue due to its use in the production of lithium iron phosphate battery cathode precursor materials by the Chinese and other western battery manufacturers. The YP is also used to produce purified phosphoric acid and higher grades of acid using a thermal oxidation process after smelting. This paper will look at the basics of the smelting including slag chemistry, alloy chemistry and offgas chemistry. The paper will look at the design of the furnaces used in the YP production process as well as the downstream recovery of phosphorus from the smelter off-gas stream to YP. The next part of the discussion will focus on the operations of a YP smelter with regards to control of the furnace to optimise phosphorus recovery to YP. Will discuss tapping cycles for alloy and slag with a view to optimal phosphorus recovery. The discussion will close out with a review of operational challenges in the smelter and a brief description of the downstream conversion of YP to high purity phosphoric acid.

The paper focuses on explosibility conditions in underground coal mines, the behaviour of explosions from initiating gas ignitions to violent dust explosions and the effectiveness and limits of operation of current designs of passive explosion barriers in suppressing the flame front. Areas of particular emphasis include: passive explosion barriers are not designed to protect personnel in the flame initiation zone and its immediate surroundings; passive dust and water barriers are generally considered ineffective against methane ignitions of the magnitude that can occur at the working face; dispersal of suppressant from passive barriers is adversely influenced by equipment, including conveyor belts, located in the barrier zone; current regulations in Australia do not specify the installation of barriers in all roadways leading to the face, so their use has a limited capacity to contain explosions; a manifest design limitation is that passive barriers are restricted to one operation and are therefore ineffective against repetitive fire gases explosions; and the practice of stone dusting in roadways inbye the barrier zone could conceivably adversely affect the operation of passive barriers. The paper discusses performance evaluations made in full scaleexplosion galleries and the use of alternatives to passive barriers,including the installation of active barriers under some circumstances.

The various mechanisms by which phosphorus (P) occurs and is distributed within banded iron formations (BIF)-derived iron ore are examined. In unenriched, precursor BIF P occurs predominantly as discrete grains of primary apatite. In high-grade ores hosted mainly by the Brockman Iron Formation, P occurs in three main forms:1. as secondary apatite;2. other submicron, P-rich phases (eg Rare earth containing minerals (REE), vivianite, strengite,wavellite) present in pore networks; and3. as P occurring with iron oxides, in particular, goethite.However, the presence of secondary P-bearing phases does not contribute signifi cantly to the total P level in iron ore, and it is P associated mainly with goethite, which represents the most common occurrence of P in these ores.No direct evidence for the replacement of Fe by P within the structure of synthetic goethite has been demonstrated. Therefore, it is most likely that in iron ores P associates with goethite in occluded form as adsorbed PO4 3- species or as discrete P-bearing minerals, such as strengite, wavellite or vivianite, in ultra-fine, micro-pores or within intra-domain regions of multi-domainic goethite. Such occluded P is not easily extracted with commonly used lixiviants, such as weakly alkaline leachates. Recent development of a low temperature-alkalie/water leach extraction method has been successful in reducing not only the P content, but also amounts of Si and Al inthe initial ore. Refi nement of such a method to commercial application will have enormous benefit in realising the economic potential of large tonnages of high-P (ie >0.07 wt per cent P) bearing iron ore.

This paper puts the view that, for one gold deposit in Victoria at least, the Australasian Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources is severely deficient. The author questions whether or not the Code constrains the proper dissemination of information relevant to resource valuation. The author offers a view about the estimation of inferred resources, and provides data believed pertinent to the proper valuation of Ballarat Goldfields Ltd Ballarat East Project.

Evaluating the resources and reserves in a mineral deposit requires many interdependent subjective decisions. The decision of stationarity is arguably the most important. This decision includes: the choice of domains that subset the entire deposit, modelling the boundaries of each domain, and understanding and considering the nature of the contacts between domains. Reasonable choices are made in consideration of the geological context, the available data, the goals of the study and the available resources for the study. This paper reviews aspects of the decision of stationarity in modern resource assessment with a focus on quantifying uncertainty and using numerical/statistical tools to help the geomodeller. The use of volume/distance functions to quantify uncertainty in domain limits is particularly important and is presented in detail. The use of contact plots provides help with the continuity of grades across domain boundaries. Realisations are not assembled as a branching combinatorial of all possibilities, but as a set of realisations that provide a measure of uncertainty. This paper amounts to a definition of stationarity for modern resource assessment.
