ONE of the most important contributions to the art of electrolytic zinc production has been the aluminum cathode. This has been used in all major production since its commercial development in 1916. The literature is replete with important contributions, some of which may have been replaced by better ones, but thus far there appears no other metal to take the place of aluminum as cathode material. Credit for this innovation goes to Sherard Cowper Coles, of England. When experi¬menting on the extraction of zinc from Broken Hill ore at Hayle, Cornwall, in 1893, he introduced the aluminum cathode, and in 1895 obtained British Patent No. 20073. The reason for this dominant position of aluminum as cathode material in zinc sulphate electrolytes is its unique surface, to which electrodeposited metals usually do not tightly adhere. The metal must be of high purity for best results. It is possible to develop a starting-sheet method by which thin electrodeposited sheets of cathode zinc are made and stripped from a smooth aluminum plate. Such thin sheets of cathode zinc may be used as are the copper sheets in standard electrolytic copper-refinery practice. However, complications arise because of extreme warping of the zinc starting sheet after a few hours of deposition, and thus special arrangements must be made to compensate for this abnormality. Reasons advanced for the ease with which deposits may be stripped from the aluminum surface are: (1) presence of a permanent oxide coating on the metal, (2) failure of aluminum to alloy with the deposit, (3) differences in coefficient of expansion, (4) high position of aluminum in the electromotive series of metals. Of these reasons for nonadherence, which may have some application in general deposition, probably the oxide coating has the greatest bearing on the subject of zinc deposition. The remarkable strides which have been made in recent years in the art of petroleum refining are not fully apparent until we attempt to compare the scientific status of the industry today with the basic conditions existing a decade or so ago. The spotlight has played so strongly on the development of cracking that many of the wonderful steps brought about in other departments have crept upon us unawares. A number of causes have contributed to this highly accelerated rate of progress. Constant effort by both companies and individuals to obtain the honors and prizes rewarding new discoveries has played its usual important part in our industry as in others. Competition has applied its continuous pressure on the refiner to reduce costs and losses and increase the proportionate yields of the higher-valued fractions. Advances in the engineering professions and growth in chemistry and allied sciences have contributed much. But there are other factors which deserve particular mention. The rapid development of the internal combustion engine, with the rigorous quality requirements and large quantity consumption of both fuel and lubricants has been a tremendous influence in adding impetus to natural progress. The teaching of petroleum principles and practices in many of our best universities and technical schools, and the calling into the industry of ever greater numbers of scientifically trained men to supplement the efforts of the practically trained operators, as well as to apply at close hand the fundamentals of science as a life work, has had and is having an incalculable influence. Important Improvements Let us consider briefly some of the most important improvements: First, distillation, which constitutes the greatest single phase of refinery operations, even with cracking excluded; that phase of distillation being handled as an individual subject in this symposium. Today we are distilling crude oil and redistilling by-products at a rate very much faster than was possible with the lesser knowledge of the art which we possessed

Machine loading of coal into mine cars is increasing rapidly. Particular reasons for its use frequently apply to certain localities, but in general, it is profitable to install mechanical coal-loading equipment: (I) when existing hand-loading contract rates prevent further cost reduction; (2) when the height of the coal bed requires that either top or bottom must be taken to place cars in rooms; (3) when labor shortage or limited house-plant capacity prevents the production of desired tonnage ; (4) when tonnage requirements are in excess of possible hand-loaded production from developed areas; (5) when working places are scattered and it is possible to concentrate production, and therefore supervision, by the installation of mechanical equipment; (6) when rapid development is essential. Having decided to install loading equipment, the problem then arises as to what type is best adapted for a particular mine or coal bed, the choice lying between mobile track equipment, pit-car loaders, scrapers, shaker conveyors, belt conveyors and drag conveyors. MajoR FactoRs Influencing Choice of Equipment In determining the type of equipment to be used, the following major factors must be studied: Grades.—Adverse grades, while permitting other types of loading equipment to work successfully, may prevent the success of a shaker conveyor installation. Thickness of Bed.—The thickness of coal governs the choice of equipment. A machine that requires 5 ft. of head room should not be selected for a 3-ft. bed where otherwise it would be unnecessary either to brush top or to lift bottom. Nature of Pavement.—Soft or scaly bottoms are unsuitable for the use of any type of digging loader, shaker conveyors or scraper loaders. nigging loaders and scraper loaders scale the bottom, mixing it with the coal and causing preparation difficulties; shaker-conveyor drives frequently work themselves loose, destroying the conveyor alignment and creating maintenance problems. The photograph, Fig. 1, shows the apparatus a little less than half size, consisting of a filtering-flask fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a bent glass tube, and an extraction-thimble fitted with rubber stopper through which passes a glass tube of 0.25-inch bore. Both tubes are connected by a short piece of rubber tubing. A section of a thimble is shown in the photograph ; the tube extends to within & in. of the tapered end. The object of using the thimble is to remove the acid from the beaker after all the copper has been precipitated. Time is saved, the copper is not exposed to the acid alone, and there are none of the losses attending ordinary filtration. I have accomplished these results by means of a piece of perforated platinum fastened in the end of a (0.25-in. bore glass tube and a filter-mat of asbestos, but after my supply of proper length fiber became exhausted I could not replenish it even after purchasing 14 lots from four different dealers. The above apparatus may be used to remove at least seven-eighths of a supernatant liquid from a settled precipitate without disturbing the latter. The application of the thimble is best shown by partly outlining the assay for copper, as follows: Dilute the acid solution of copper and other sulphates to 150 cc. in a 200-cc. Jena beaker, place on a hot plate, add 2 drops of concentrated HCl, then place a strip of aluminum in the beaker (this may be bent or straight, as desired). Connect the apparatus, as shown in Pig. 1, with a filter-pump having a strong suction. When the copper is precipitated, remove the beaker from the hot plate and insert the extraction-thimble alongside the strip of aluminum. The acid solution will be drawn through the porous tube. The brief comments made in this chapter deal mainly with shaft sinking, but don't assume that freezing techniques apply only to shaft sinking. They can be used on tunnel work, on such things as liquid gas storage in sediment, and I think you will probably see other applications for it as we go along. The method was first developed in 1883 and was used to sink shallow shafts through water-bearing overburden in Germany and in England. One of the early shafts was in Germany and was sunk by freezing to 310-ft depth. The project required 17 months for drilling, roughly 5 1/2 months for freezing, and another 7 months for sinking, giving an average progress of 10 ½ fpm. Fortunately there have been numerous improvements and new developments in this technique through the years. With equipment and techniques available today, we can take a 20-ft-diam shaft down through 2000 ft of water-saturated overburden and the time schedule runs roughly 4 months for site preparation, freeze-hole drilling, installing the casings, and setting up the plant; 4 ½ months for freezing; and 6 months for excavating and installing permanent linings. This gives a progress rate of about 140 fpm, on average. I might qualify that a little in that the special linings that are required for some formations can affect the time. If it's straightforward sinking where one can use a heavy concrete lining, up to 630-640 fpm may be achieved in a shaft; but with special cast-iron tubbing or types like that, 5 fpd is pretty good progress, so the lining does affect the time. The freezing method is used mainly for sinking shafts through unstable water-bearing formations which cannot be grouted either effectively or economically and which are too deep to enclose in pile casing. Even with overburden, grouting methods available today can handle roughly 100 lb water pressure; in the range of, say, 100 to 150 ft from the surface, it's very often best to grout 40 or 50 ft. Missouri has had one of the best years in history in the development of gas, the 49 completed gas wells having an average of nearly 1,000,000 cu. ft. initial open flow. Altogether 101 wells were drilled in the western part of the state, from Andrew County on the north to Vernon County on the south. Of these 49 were gas wells (including four old wells drilled deeper) with an initial open flow of 48,850,295 cu. ft., eight were oil wells (including one old well drilled deeper) with an initial capacity of 125 bbl. per day and 44 were dry holes (including five old wells drilled deeper). All the oil wells were in previously discovered pools in Jackson and Cass Counties. The outstanding discovery was a "shoestring" of a sand that is termed the Bartlesville, trending northwest and southeast across townships 48 and 49 N., R. 32 W., in central Jackson County. The sand is believed to be a narrow channel or bar, probably not over 800 ft. wide, lying at a higher horizon than the Bluejacket or true Bartlesville sand. A total of 32 wells with 47,453,080 cu. ft. initial open flow has been completed along the 6 miles of the shoestring. The largest individual well had an open flow of 4,500,000 cu. ft. The depth of these wells ranges from 350 to 635 ft., depending on surface elevation. The rock pressure ranges from 145 to 169 pounds. The Missouri Valley Gas and Oil Co. and Panhandle Eastern Pipe Line Co. have laid pipe lines into the area and most of the wells are now connected. In other parts of Jackson County and in other counties of the state there was very little activity during 1937. Of the 101 completions, 88 were in Jackson County. Cass County had five oil wells and three dry holes, Bates County one dry hole and Vernon County two dry holes. In the northern counties, Andrew and Clinton were represented by one dry hole each. At the end of 1937 drilling and leasing operations were very active and wildcatting promises to feature the coming year.

McLaUghlin, San Francisco, Ca1.—It seems to me that Mr. Snelling's work, if it is what it appears to be, is one of the most important contributions to petroleum technology that has been brought out in the last 25 years. If his end products are what they seem to be, he has made. a discovery, which, in my judgment, will revolutionize the petroleum industry. As to industrially carrying out these processes I do not think there is the slightest difficulty, for I have had some work recently where crude oils were handled successfully at a temperature of 750" F, and pressure of 750 lb. per square inch. William A. WillIams, San francisco, Ca1.—What metal did you use, Mr. McLaughlin? A. C. McLauGHILIN.—Ordinaly seamless tubing, extra strong. William A. Williams.—Tests were made in Dr. Rittman's experimental plant at Pittsburgh, upon samples of residuum furnished by Mr. Bell, the residuum being the remainder of the crude oil after the lighter fractions had been removed. After the material had been run through Dr. Bittman's plant, yields of from 43 to 58 per cent. of material, boiling under 150" C. were obtained. The distillate had a peculiar odor, due to the presence of benzene, toluene, and other unsaturated hydrocarbons. W. N. Best, New York, N. Y.—What is the difference between the Rittman and the Snelling process or system? William A. Williams.—he fundamental difference is that reactions take place under relatively higher temperatures and pressures and with none of the oil present in its original or liquid state, while the reactions secured by Mr. Snelling and other investigators have been from the liquids in the presence of some vapors. Under such conditions as Mr. Snelling operates, the temperatures and pressures used are limited and the flexibility in the control of these variables is extremely limited when compared with the Rittman process.

WHILE the library work of the Woman's Auxiliary to the A. I. M. E. was founded three years after the formation of the Auxiliary, its present policy of establishing permanent libraries in mining camps throughout the United States dates only from 1924. Since then sixteen libraries have been established and thousands of books have found their way to homes of far-away miners, bringing pleasure and knowledge to a multitude of Americans and future citizens. Library work was initiated under the presidency of Mrs. H. W. Hardinge in 1922 and firmly established with her aid as one of the main activities of the Auxiliary. The first chairman served but a short time and Mrs. A. O. Ihlseng then took over the work of chairman of the Library Committee. To place the surplus books of Auxiliary members and their friends in use in mining camps was the immediate work of the committee. This was accomplished by placing a traveling library in the Bureau of Mines' cars and also by sending books for distribution to section chair- men in our larger mining camps.

Jenks, of Boston, one of the owners of this interesting mine, I am enabled to lay before the Institute a suite of specimehs, illustrating its peculiar formation and the paragenesis of mineral species which it presents; and a recent brief visit and rapid reconnoissance of the locality permit me to supplement this exhibition with a general description, based upon personal observation. The mine is situated upon the Culsagee Fork of the Tennessee River, in Macon County, North Carolina, a few miles from Franklin. The most practicable route by which it can at present be visited is by wagon (or preferably on horseback) from Seneca City, S. C., a station on the Charlotte and Atlanta Air Line Railroad. The itinerary is as follows: to Walhalla,* nine miles; Walhalla to Highlands, twenty-nine miles; Highlands to the Culsagee, fourteen miles. By passing the night at or near Highlands, the mine can be reached and examined and the return to Highlands made on the second day; and the round trip, if performed in the saddle, can be completed in three days from Seneca City. It is not easy, with due regard to steed and rider, to do it in less time. The rough and precipitous mountain roads do not permit rapid travel; and the journey is at best a fatiguing one. But its slight hardships are overpaid by the stimulating effect of the climate and the great beauty of the scenery, both of which are destined to become more widely known than at present, to seekers for health and pleasure. Indeed the town of Highlands, already named, is almost entirely made up of northern immigrants, attracted by these advantages and by the inducement of cheap land for agriculture and stock-raising. The Culsagee or Sugartown fork of the Tennessee traverses the belt of ancient crystalline schists on the west flank of the Blue Ridge. This belt abounds in valuable minerals. IN order to get an idea as to the strength of steel rails, it will be well to review the tests to which iron rails have been subjected. In England, Mr. Ashcroft found that the best 80 pound rails broke under a 300 pound weight, falling 15 feet. In Germany the Society of Railway Managers determined on and have long applied a test of 1000 pounds falling 101 feet, as the standard which all first-class iron rails must reach. In this country no inspection nor test is applied, but tests made show that iron rails from our most reliable makers, break under a 6 foot fall of a 1500 pound drop as an extreme test, most of those tested breaking under a far less test; some breaking with less than a 3 foot fall of the same weight. Everywhere where steel has been used, engineers have come to the conclusion that some test is required to show the regularity and strength of the product. As compared with iron, the tests which steel will stand are wonderful. After numerous experiments partially based on the experience of the rail-mill at Graz, belonging to the Southern Railway of Austria, the Society of German Railway Managers fixed upon a test of 2000 pounds falling 13 1/2 feet. They found that this test represented the steel which suited their necessities, and also found that with steel of otherwise average purity, this test represented about one-half per cent. of carbon, and made it a rule to take no steel containing under three-tenths of a per cent, of carbon, because it was too soft. They expressed a hope that a harder steel could soon be made tough enough to stand the same test. In England, a test was adopted of 2240 pounds, falling 15 to 17 feet on the rail on heavy bearings. Many excellent papers, descriptive of the milling and smelting of every kind of commercial ores, the refining of virgin metals, the casting into various shapes demanded by the trade, the rolling into shapes best suited to the factory machinery and the making of composition alloys to suit every requirement have been issued by the many technical societies dealing with non-ferrous metals. It is a wonderful collection of papers, of which the mining and metallurgical engineers may well be proud, but strange as it may seem, metallurgists in general appear to take the stand that when they have delivered suitable alloys to the foundry and rolled products to the factory their duty to write papers has ceased, at least in so far as the A. I. M. E. is concerned. Still we read in the daily papers that the mining companies are absorbing metal-manufacturing industries. The purpose of this paper is to describe the reclaiming of non-ferrous scrap metals at manufacturing plants, taking as an example the automobile industry. Collection and Disposition of Scrap Until about five years ago, much of the factory scrap, with little or no preliminary treatment, was sold to secondary-metal smelters. Of late years the factory salvage department has become an important part, of the plant in reclaiming everything of value and incidentally does much of the work formerly done by the smelters. Like most good things, it is sometimes overdone, and much work is done at the factory with inexperienced men that could be done much better by experienced skilled labor at the custom smelting plants. Employees of the salvage department collect the waste products in all departments at the source and in that way avoid much contamination. Every reasonable precaution is taken to keep the scrap clean. It is hand-sorted, cut, burned, magnetized, concentrated, separated or compressed, as the case may be, preparatory for re-use in the plant or for selling to others.

During the past few years, the Mineral Point Zinc Co. has had under consideration the improvement of various types of gas-filtering apparatus used in the removal of dust from crushing and milling plants, in the manufacture of oxide, and on blast-furnace fume and sintering furnaces. The original equipment of the various plants of the company was, of course, along lines of the standard stationary bag house. These houses required large surfaces, hand shaking, and varied only in the manner of the collection of solids and in the distribution of the gas. , Early in 1908, the first trial of a mechanical bag house was made at Nassau Plant at Depue, Ill. The duty of this installation was on dust-laden gas from a fine-crushing mill. The Printz and Rau bag machine was finally adopted and put into operation. This ingenious machine embodied what were then to us two novel features in bag-house practice: 1. An intermittent crinkling and snapping of the filtering fabric to free the meshes of solids. 2. A reversal of gas flow for a short period by a temporary connection with the suction trunk. This equipment worked fairly well except in cold weather, when we ran into condensation troubles. Had we at that time understood more fully some of the limitations of fabric filtering work, these might well have been remedied. We were impressed by this experience, however, with the efficiency of sudden tension on the fabric under suction. After a study had been made of some of the western blast-furnace houses using the reversal-of-flow feature, experiments were started early in 3 914 with a view to developing an automatic equipment along the best lines of our past experience. The objects sought were: 1. Keeping labor out of the houses for hygienic reasons. 2. Reduction of labor costs. 3. Reduction in size of bag houses. 4. Accessibility. 5. Ability to handle relatively hot gases where required.

We at Hughes Tool Co. are extremely proud of the quality of the hardware and techniques introduced through our efforts in tunnel-machine development and of the ready acceptance of them by manufacturers and contractors throughout the world. All of us who attended the conference and who are represented in the book, we believe, anticipate an increasing need for improved methods of underground excavation. The development of such methods will permit the further exploitation of our underground resources plus providing underground space for transportation and habitation at a rate compatible with demand. We hope that our comments, derived from the application of Hughes Tool Co.'s rotary boring experience, may provide a better understanding of the boring method as a possible avenue through which the desired improvement in underground excavation may be attained. We hope you may also become aware of some of the problems Hughes, as a pioneer developer of raise, shaft, and tunnel-boring equipment, must face prior to further major undertakings in this very interesting field. Our task is to acquaint you with the present status of the Hughes Tool Co. development program as it relates specifically to tunnel-boring machines. We feel this task can best be accomplished by a brief review of the general sequence of events leading to and constituting an equipment development program and more specifically the manner in which these events have occurred to either influence or further our boring-machine development program. The development of a machine to accomplish a certain function or series of functions is usually a very long and tedious process to which any number of individuals must contribute, perhaps over a period of centuries. Of particular irony is the fact that often those who contribute most generously do not necessarily reap the greatest immediate benefit. A marketable ma- chine will, however, result from a sequence of events such as these: 1) A problem or need is defined. 2) An idea is born to eliminate the problem.

Mr. ASHBURNER's paper on the Classification and Composition of Pennsylvania Anthracites, read at this meeting, well shows the need of new and accurate determinations of the heating value of these coals. A similar need exists for the determination of the value of bituminous coals, since the variation in quality of the latter is greater than the variation in anthracites. The recent extensive use of liquid and gaseous fuels, " patent" fuels, tan-bark, and other refuse fuels, also makes a necessity fix some correct method of determining the relative values of each of these fuels. Mr. Ashburner has recommended that tests of coals should be undertaken by the Second Geological Survey of Pennsylvania, and Professor Dewey, as stated in Mr. Ashbnrner's paper, has suggested a plan for tests of American coals, by the Smithsonian Institution, for which an appropriation by Congress will be asked. It is to be hoped that if any extensive series of tests of coals is carried on under either Government or State auspices, the erroneous methods of test which were followed by Professor Johnson in 1842, and by Quartermaster-General Meigs in 1882, will not be adopted.* The first requisite in determining the heating-power of a fuel is proper apparatus, such as has not been used in any of the tests of American coals yet reported. In the hope that more accurate means may be used in future tests, the writer desires to call attention to an apparatus which he has designed for the purpose. Not having had opportunity for making a trial of it, nor even of having it criticised by others, he does not offer it as the best possible apparatus; but if it contains any points of value, and leads to the design of still more suitable devices by others, the object of the presentation of this paper will be accomplished. The tests by Professor Johnson and General Meigs were made by evaporating water into steam in ordinary steam-boilers. A steamboiler of ordinary construction is not a good apparatus for determining the heating power of a fuel, for the following reasons:

Direct quantitative comparison of the results of concentrating operations on different ores is frequently desired but almost impossible to obtain if comparison has to be made by means of two quantities for each ore, as must be done at present. This paper represents the outgrowth of attempts to arrive at a single-number quantitative measure of the segregation between minerals or metals as the result of concentrating operations. The usual practice in estimating the effectiveness of concentrating operations, particularly those of ore dressing, has been to determine the recovery of the metal or mineral of interest and the grade of the concentrate. The difficulty in quantifying the effectiveness of concentration by the usual criteria may be illustrated by a few examples. Consider, for instance, two lead ores which yield by flotation the same recovery of lead, say 92 per cent., and the same grade of concentrate, say 60 per cent. Pb. If a substantial difference in the grade of the feed had existed, say if one ore contained 5 per cent. Pb and the other 10 per cent., it is clear that the concentrating operation was more effective in the case of the lower grade ore. It is difficult, however, in the light of these data to state how much more effective was the concentration of the lower grade ore. Consider again two lead ores containing 5 and 10 per cent. Pb and yielding concentrates containing 60 and 72 per cent. Pb respectively, with recoveries of 93 and 92 per cent. respectively; it is well-nigh impossiblc to tell from these figures which results represent the best separation of the minerals. It may be noted that in the usual method of estimating the effectiveness of the segregation of mineral values, no consideration is given to the rejection of the unwanted substances from the concentrate, except in the very indirect manner in which it enters into the grade of the concentrate. Consideration of the rejection of gangue from the concentrate, adequately weighted with recovery of the desired mineral in the concentrate, should supply an adequate criterion of concentration effectiveness.

A metallurgical process to be economically successful must be carried on under proper conditions of control and equipment. The question of equipment is always of primary importance. In the distillation process for the recovery of zinc by retorting, the retort is the all-important piece of equipment. Each retort in a working blóck must function as a separate unit. Over-all block efficiency is the result of the ability of the individual retort to withstand the severe conditions of operation for a maximum period of time. Therefore retort manufacture has been an ever present problem with the operator of a zinc-retorting plant. During recent years the zinc-plant operator has been faced with rapid changes in the character of the ores and concentrates. Operating costs have increased as a result of the introduction of the flotation process and the amount of flotation concentrates to be handled. To counteract increasing costs, the operator has found it necessary continually to attempt heavier loading of retorts, until a 45 to 50-lb. charge per cubic foot of retort space has become common practice. Heavy loading has brought about severe firing conditions, which, in turn, have emphasized the necessity for further improving the quality of the retort. Increasing percentages of detrimental impurities in the retort charges have also added to the operator's difficulties. Amarillo Silicon Carbide Retorts At the Amarillo plant of the American Smelting and Refining Co. a retort made of a suitable plastic clay grogged with silicon carbide has been found to best meet the present-day requirements. Retorts of this kind have been in use at Amarillo for 8 years and have shown an average furnace life of approximately 175 calendar days. The Amarillo retort is cylindrical in shape and after burning is approximately 83/4 in, inside diameter by 60 in. over-all length. The wall thickness is 136 in., except for the butt of the retort, which is approximately 2½ in. thick. The retort mud has a shrinkage of 3 per cent, or approximately % in. per foot. The silicon carbide retort after being properly dried weighs about 211 lb. When the retort is fired and ready to go into use the weight decreases to approximately 203 lb.

MILLER, Canada. The nomination for President has attracted the attention of a large number of members, as is evidenced by the receipt of many hundreds of letters and postcards. Most of these favored either Sidney J. Jennings or Philip N. Moore, each of whom received many cordial endorsements. Such a wide interest on the part of the members is a very wholesome sign, but where there is so much activity it is natural to expect a certain amount of criticism. Some of the letters indicate that the authors feel that the nomination of President should be left entirely to the Committee on Nominations without any effort by the members at large to influence them. Others feel that the nominations are largely controlled by a small group and that the members at large can have little influence. As the result; of the experience of the last few months; a majority of the Committee on Nominations begs leave to suggest that the method of making nominations be changed so that two candidates, at least, for the various offices to be nominated, and suggests that the Directors appoint a committee to investigate this question thoroughly with. a view to making definite recommendations. In accordance with its opinion that the best interests of the Institute would be served by a change in the Constitution, allowing the nomination of two candidates, and in view of the fact that this Committee has no authority to make more than a single nomination for each office, considering the high standing of both Mr. Jennings and Mr. Moore and the large number of members favoring each of these gentlemen, this Committee respectfully suggests the desirability of ,the immediate nomination of Philip N. BINARY and ternary alloys of iron, nickel and cobalt respond to annealing in a magnetic field by a characteristic change in the shape of their hysteresis 100p.l,2 An increase in retentivity and a decrease in coercive force produced by the magnetic treatment cause the hysteresis loop to approach the appearance of a rectangle. Materials with a rectangular hysteresis loop have made possible the contact-rectifier³ and have greatly improved the performance of pulse transformers4 and magnetic amplifiers." In the best material presently available for these applications, a 50 pct nickel-iron alloy," the desired characteristics are achieved by aligning the preferred crystallographic directions of magnetization along the rolling direction of the tape. The objective of the present study has been to produce rectangular hysteresis characteristics in materials with inherently high saturation. Iron-cobalt alloys, exhibiting saturation values up to 24,000 gausses' appeared to offer promise for the magnetic annealing technique, because they remain magnetic to very high temperatures,8 exhibit favorable magnetostriction properties: and show zero crystal energy at 42 pct cobalt.10 Among the ternary iron-cobalt-nickel alloys,7,11 response to heat treatment in a magnetic field is unfortunately limited to alloys having rather low saturation values.' It appeared interesting nevertheless, to study a series of compositions connecting the optimum composition (50/50) of the binary iron-cobalt system with the "Perminvar" composition (30 pct Fe, 25 pct Co, and 45 pct Ni). Very recently, R. Smoluchowski and R. W. Turner," have shown that under certain circumstances magnetic annealing can produce oriented recrystallization. A combination of this technique with the domain orientation utilized in the present study might well result in further improvements. In 1857 the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, whose main line extended from Philadelphia to Pottsville, Pennsylvania, with branches into the coal regions of Schuylliill County, made a contract with the Fairmount Rolling Mill, at Philadelphia, for the rerolling of some four thousand tons of iron rails. The essential features of the agreement were that the old rails should be piled with puddled iron and rolled into flats for the rail pile, which latter was • to be of a section seven inches square, and after being heated, and reduced, by rolling, to a bloom of a section about fire inches by six inches, was to be reheated, before being finished into the rail of the T pattern, four inches high, weighing sixty-four pounds per yard. Great care was exercised in the execution of this contract, and the rails being distributed over all parts of the road, gave general satisfaction by their excellent wear. Five years afterward, the principal proprietor and manager of the Fairmount Rolling Mill was elected President of the Reading Railroad, and very many of the rails made under his supervision were still in use in the tracks of the company, of which he had just assumed the management. His first efforts were, therefore, directed to the procuring of more rails of the same quality wherewith to replace those worn out. Here he encountered some trouble, makers refusing to bid because of the details in the specification, the required reheating being the objectionable feature, for which it was generally intimated they would not be sufficiently remunerated for the increased labor, extra coal consumed, and the changes necessary from the established methods of working. Most of the new rails were, therefore, bought, and the old rails rerolled without regard to any particulars as to the manner of piling, heating, etc., each manufacturer furnishing what he deemed the best article possible for the money.
