In 2013, Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as NSENGI), Tenova HYL and Danieli have entered into an agreement to combine ENERGION DR technology into blast furnace technology and/or with syngas technologies. This new alliance will allow the three companies to combine research and development activities with their respective expertise in ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas (by-pro gas and coal gasification) technology, with the ultimate objective to develop breakthrough iron making technologies and create such EPC projects. This paper introduces the concepts and the features of our breakthrough technologies of combining of ENERGIRON DR technology, Blast Furnace technology and Syngas technology.

Most cyclic plasticity models used in multiaxial fatigue life predictions are based on a concept of a yield surface, which divides the elastic and plastic domains. Plastic straining occurs when the stress state reaches the surface and tries to move outward. Subsequent plastic straining causes the stress state to remain on the yield surface, which will translate to prevent the stress point from moving outside it according to a kinematic hardening rule that models the Bauschinger effect. The accurate modeling of the yield surface shape is fundamental to predict stress-strain relations. In this work, the main yield surface equations for isotropic materials are compared. Even though most materials can be modeled using Mises and Tresca surfaces, other need to consider the effect on the yield strength of the hydrostatic stress or the normal stress acting on a critical plane. It is shown that pressure-sensitive models originally devised for concrete can be applied to predict yielding in some materials, and even fatigue life for metallic structures with short cracks.

Current political, economic and ecological guidelines demand the increase of power densities of nearly all machinery parts today. In order to further lower the wear rate towards the ultra-mild sliding wear regime an integral approach is needed, which has to regard contact conditions, surface topography, surface chemistry, as well as sub-surface properties. Still there are no simple parameters to classify the performance of tribosystem. In this study the area and volume affected by tribocontacts are calculated by means of a three dimensional elastic-ideal plastic contact model. The surfaces are generated by means of conventional machining procedures and characterized by scanning white light interferometry. The further input data as to normal and friction forces are derived by ultra-mild sliding wear tests under boundary lubrication conditions of carburized steel against carburized steel and 52100 steel against case-hardened spheroidal cast iron. This contribution will depict the distinct influence of the topography on friction and ultra-mild sliding wear of common Fe-base materials and point on the marked importance of highly localized effects, which govern the acting mechanisms.
