The use of soil nailing has grown steadily in the UK over the last 15 years and it has recently become more popular in the Republic of Ireland. This paper presents three soil nailing temporary works case histories where the technique has been used to support steep excavations in difficult ground conditions. It demonstrates the effectiveness of soil nailing when applied in appropriate conditions. Details of design methods and construction techniques are described and those aspects of soil nailing that will benefit from further study and development are identified.

Germany's' wartime coal-tar industry had two main branches, which can best be considered individually because their raw materials, operations, and distributions were almost completely separated. One branch, old and well-established, was concerned almost entirely with processing coal tar produced by the high-temperature carbonization of caking bituminous coal. Carbonization was effected principally in byproduct- coke ovens and to less extent in vertical, horizontal, and inclined retorts. The high-temperature tar was all processed in tar-distilling plants that handled high-temperature tar almost exclusively.

The work covered by this report was undertaken at the request of Dr. J. A. Holmes, late Director of the Bureau of Mines, to whom the writer had been recommended by C. W. Goodale and E. P. Mathewson, of Butte and Anaconda, Mont. The director's offer was accepted for the honor it conferred and for the useful results that might be promulgated by the work in the technical field covered. The investigation was facilitated by permission to visit various works and sometimes by contributions of important definite information on a given subject. In this report considerable space has been devoted to general and theoretical principles on the ground that under modern conditions the best results in any field of activity can be attained only with the a. id of an adequate knowledge of the best theories underlying the practice. The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so that it will make no difference whether pig iron or gold bullion is offered for test. It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate any one method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.

This work shall consist of furnishing and driving foundation piles of the type and dimensions designated on the plans or in the special provisions including cutting off or building up foundation piles when required. This specification also covers providing test piles and performing loading tests. Piling shall conform to and be installed in accordance with these specifications, and at the location, and to the elevation, penetration and bearing capacity shown on the plans or as directed by the Engineer. Except when test piles are required, the Contractor shall furnish the piles in accordance with the dimensions shown on the plans or special provisions. When test piles are required, the pile lengths shown on the plans are for estimating purposes only and the actual lengths to be furnished for production piles will be determined by the Engineer after the test piles have been driven. The lengths given in the Engineer's order list will include only the lengths anticipated for use in the completed structure. The Contractor shall, with-out added compensation, increase the lengths shown or ordered to provide for fresh heading and for such additional length as may be necessary to suit his method of operation.

A similar approach is currently being used to evaluate the risk from terrorist use of chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear materials.

Close spatial relationships between the deposits of the Etheridge Goldfield (23 000 kg of bullion) and various regional geological and geophysical features suggest that genesis of the ore deposits was a multi-stage process that started with magmatic and metamorphic stages in the mid-Proterozoic, climaxed with structural and hydrothermal stages in the late Palaeozoic and terminated with an oxidation enrichment stage in the Cainozoic. Acceptance of this hypothesis permits classification of the Georgetown region into areas likely to contain deposits of the Etheridge type and those unlikely to do so. Consequently there is little scope for the discovery of extensions of this field. However, the stratigraphic interval between the source rocks of the Etheridge field and stratigraphically bigger host rocks of the Croydon field may contain disseminated replacement gold deposits of the Carlin type. The potential host (pyritic carbonaceous and locally dolomitic siltstone of the Candlow Formation) is locally faulted and cut by granitoids and the extension of a mineralised, long-standing zone of structural weakness.

Mining vehicle manufacturers are developing lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery electric vehicles as an alternative to diesel-powered vehicles. In gassy underground mines, explosion-proof enclosures are commonly used to enclose electrical ignition sources to prevent propagation of an internal methane (CH4)-air explosion to a surrounding explosive atmosphere. Li-ion batteries can create pressurized explosions within sealed enclosures due to thermal runaway. Researchers at the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) measured thermal-runaway pressures of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells as a function of free space within sealed enclosures and observed an inverse power relationship. A well-confined cell produced 4260 psia (294 bar) of pressure during a thermal runaway, far exceeding minimum pressure containment specifications for conventional explosion-proof enclosures. Results indicate that adding enough free space surrounding LFP cells can reduce thermal-runaway pressures to levels below that expected for CH4-air ignitions. Measured thermal-runaway temperatures were below the minimum autoignition temperature of CH4-air.

In the context of the construction of an Underground Research Laboratory devoted to the feasibility studies of radioactive waste deposits, it appears of the utmost importance to study the long-term behaviour of rock, over a long time period. In this paper, some results of tests performed on the argillite from the Meuse-Haute-Marne site test in Eastern France are presented. Then a numerical simulation of one of this test using the viscoplastic damaging constitutive law proposed by Lemaitre is presented. Finally, this law is used to simulate numerically the behaviour of the rock at the wall of a circular tunnel in order to determine the extension and the change along the time of the Excavated Damaged Zone (EDZ). Advantages and limitations of the model are discussed. Dans le cadre de la réalisation d’un laboratoire de recherche souterrain conçu pour étudier la faisabilité d’installations de stockage de déchets radioactifs, il apparaît fondamental de caractériser non seulement le comportement viscoplastique à très long terme des matériaux mais aussi les phénomènes d’endommagement consécutif à la redistribution de contraintes provoquées par l’excavation des cavités. On présente ici les résultats d’essais réalisés sur les argilites du site de Meuse/Haute-Marne et destinés à caractériser leur comportement visco-endommageable. Il est ensuite procédé à une application de la loi viscoplastique endommageable de Lemaitre pour simuler l'un de ces tests. Les apports et les limites d'un tel modèle sont mis en évidence par des simulations numériques du comportement de la roche au pourtour d'une galerie circulaire permettant de suivre l’évolution au cours du temps de la zone endommagée (EDZ) à la paroi . Im Rahmen des Baus eines unterirdischen Forschungslabors für die Untersuchung der Machbarkeit von Deponien für radioaktive Abfälle erweist es sich als äußerst wichtig, das langfristige Verhalten von Gestein über einen langen Zeitraum zu untersuchen. Im vorliegenden Artikel werden einige Ergebnisse von Untersuchungen vorgestellt, die mit Tonschiefer aus der Meuse-Haute-Marne in Frankreich durchgeführt wurden. Anschließend wird eine numerische Simulation der Untersuchungen unter Verwendung des von Lemaitre vorgeschlagenen viskoplastischen Verformungsgesetzes vorgestellt. Schließlich wird dieses Gesetz auf die numerische Simulation eines Kreistunnels angewandt, um die Ausdehnung und die zeitliche Entwicklung der Auflockerungszone (EDZ) zu bestimmen. "Technologies developed to sequester CO2 or use CO2 for enhanced fossil fuel recovery are currently being utilized across the globe. Taxation regimes and CO2 credit trading are becoming drivers for a number of projects. Some mining companies have also identified ancillary opportunity to sequester CO2 in their by-products; recent work in the alumina industry is a prime example. In addition to process plant emissions, mining companies are becoming increasingly aware of their overall carbon footprint, including CO2 generated during the production of utility power. New power plant designs, in various stages of development, include CO2 separation and sequestration techniques. This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art for these technologies; including integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plants. A concept to use the gasification products as reductant in metallurgical processes is also described. The relevance of technology from power plant designs with post-combustion capture to the processing of off-gas generated in metallurgical facilities is also reviewed.IntroductionGlobalization and international economic growth have led to an increase in energy demand worldwide, and a corresponding increase in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2005, 81% of global energy supply came from fossil fuels [1]; and while alternative energy technologies are emerging, it will require many decades to curb society’s fossil fuel dependence. Given the global concern of climate change and its scientific relationship with anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2), there is at present great interest in the development of techniques to reduce emissions of CO2. While most of these efforts are related to power generation and energy efficiency, the development of technologies for CO2 capture may offer opportunities in reducing emissions from industrial processes."

In response to the enormous amounts of coal discard generated during coal mining and preparation, the development of an efficient and sustainable strategic use of this resource is essential. Furthermore, the rising urban population over the next decades is confronted with the depletion of quality raw materials for building components. To this end, this study reports new information on the morphology, water absorption, and flexural strength properties of ceramic composites produced from three different coal discards and polysiloxane pre-ceramic polymer (PCP) resin. In addition, test results relating to the continuous operating temperature, chemical resistance, and efflorescence potential of the composites are presented. The results show that the water absorption and flexural strength of the coal composites, up to 1.94% and 36.46 MPa respectively, exceed the requirements for ceramic and clay roof tiles. The continuous operating temperature of composites is found to be more thermally stable than conventional roofing tiles (concrete and ceramic) between ambient temperature and 600°C. In addition, the excellent chemical resistance of the composites (94.43%−99.98%) compared to conventional roofing tiles (67.82%−99.97%) eliminates the need for additional external coatings. The interesting results documented so far suggest that this technique could be used to produce low-temperature application building products such as bricks, panels, roofing tiles, etc. This new recycling technique offers an excellent opportunity to eliminate enormous volumes of coal discard and to advance the circular economy in the coal industry.

This report is one of a series written by members of the Solid Fuels Mission to Germany describing wartime developments in the mining , preparation, and utilization of coal . The mission was organized early in 1945 under the auspices of the Technical Industrial Intelligence Committee , which cooperated with a counterpart British Committee . Engineers from other allied countries cooperated in some of the investigations . The Solid Fuels Mission operated under the direction of a steering committee headed by Dr. C. J. Potter , deputy solid fuels administrator . The personnel of the mission consisted of H. F. Yancey , in charge , J. W. Buch , Thomas Fraser , L. L. Newman , and L. D. Schmidt , of the Bureau of Mines ; H. H. Lowry , Director of the Coal Research Laboratory , Carnegie Institute of Technology ; H. J. Rose , vice president and director of research , Bituminous Coal Research, Inc .; and F. H. Reed , chief chemist , Illinois Geological Survey . Over 50 reports were written by the members of the Solid Fuels Mission . MetPlant conferences have focused on ensuring mining projects are well designed then optimised to operate safely and effectively at the top end of world’s best practice to ensure shareholders are not just happy but delighted. This assumes the MetPlant was built right the first time. However, reality is, too often Plant Metallurgists (PlantMets) find after commissioning they are faced with the expensive task of correcting errors or modifying shortcomings to achieve product quality at name-plate capacity, i.e. get it right the second time. Why do companies spend good money to engineer an excellent feasibility study then allow “wise men” remote from the project team to impose cuts in budget and schedule, often under the guise of value engineering? Since mining is full of uncertainties, such actions can increase the risks of failure with the result that some MetPlants do not work well. Can PlantMets influence the remote wise men who often are also imposing the rules for lending and the required returns to appreciate the uncertainties of mining and their associated risks then let the project team get it right the first time? PlantMets can negotiate with the wise men from the outset of the project and bring them into an outer layer of the team where they can understand the risks then share responsibility and accountability to achieve the common goal of building a MetPlant which works well the first time and deliver the forecast profits. Since shareholders are not in the business to make losses they appoint a Board of Directors to deliver the best outcomes for the shareholders. "Geotechnical structures ,such as underground bunkers, tunnels, and building foundations aresubjected to stress fields produced by..the gravity load on the structure and/or any overlyingstrata. These stress fields may be.. reproduced on a scaled model of the structure byproportionally increasing the gravity field through the use of a centrifuge. This technology canthen be used to assess the vulnerability of various geotechnical structures to explosive loading.Applications of this technology include assessing the effectiveness of earth penetrating weapons,evaluating the vulnerability of various structures, counter-terrorism, and model validation. Thisdocument describes the development of expertise in scale model explosive testing ongeotechnical structures using Sandia’s large scale centrifuge facility. This study focused onburied structures such as hardened storage bunkers or tunnels. Data from this study was used toevaluate the predictive capabilities oft existing hydrocodes and structural dynamics codesdeveloped at Sandia National Laboratories (such as Pronto/SPH, Pronto/CTH, and ALEGRA)."

"Packaged fuel" is the trade name applied by the industry to a product consisting of coal screenings and a binder compressed into 3 -or 4-inch cubes and wrapped (six or eight in a package) in sturdy paper and sealed with gummed tape. Parry describes the product in greater detail and distinguishes clearly between packaged fuel and briquettes. The industry developed from the desire of retail coal dealers to improve utilization of the relatively large quantities of slack sizes that result from the degradation, during shipping and handling in the yard, of friable coal, particularly Pocahontas coal. During the war an attempt was made to apply this technique to anthracite fines, and a recent publication of the U. S. Bureau of Mines reported the results of physical and combustion tests on packaged fuels containing anthracite fines. References made in this report to the previous investigation on packaged fuels containing anthracite represent data or conclusions presented in Report of Investigations 3882. This investigation was conducted as a continuation of the previously reported studies and consisted of physical and combustion tests of packaged fuels made from high-volatile bituminous coal, as well as the low-volatile bituminous coal ordinarily used in the industry, to determine their relative suitability for domestic firing. Particular attention was given to the smoke-producing properties of the packaged fuels because of the increasing importance of the prevention or reduction of smoke from hand-fired domestic heating plants resulting from the widespread enactment of smoke-prevention ordinances.

The Full Scale Model Roof Bolt Test System described herein was designed, fabricated, erected, and installed by MSA Advanced Systems Division for the U. S. Department of Interior, Bureau of Mines, Spokane Research Center. It was furnished under USBM Contract No. 50271014 and Modifications. The test system is intended for use by the Bureau of Mines to run comparison tests on roof bolt systems. The mine entry cross section is made from special concrete pillars and roof slabs. They are constructed within a steel beam frame with hydraulic operated cylinders to apply loads that simulate the action of mining overburden. The frame is designed so it can be disassembled for replacing the concrete in subsequent tests. A computer and data acquisition system is furnished to control the load application and measure and gather data.

INFINIUM, Inc. is scaling up a new molten salt electrolysis process for producing rare earth metals. Instead of conventional carbon anodes, this process uses Pure Oxygen Anodes™ which employ a stabilized zirconia solid electrolyte between the molten salt and anode. This eliminates two problems with today's rare earth metal production technology. First, it eliminates carbon anodes and contamination of the product by carbon and its impurities, enabling 10-100 times larger batch size than current practice, and lower labor costs. Second, it eliminates emissions of perfluorocarbons (PFC) such as CF4 and C2F6, which are very problematic greenhouse gases with 6000+ times the global warming potential of CO2. The zirconia also enables a sealed vessel with no LiF emissions, creates a reducing environment enabling use of low-cost welded steel vessels, and either produces a high-purity oxygen by-product or can use natural gas to reduce the necessary electrical energy with no HF production. This paper will describe the technology and its current status for rare earth metal production.

The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence women’s engagement in technical positions in the South African mining sector and to determine what could be done to promote their successful participation. A convergent parallel mixed-methods research design was used to ascertain the factors that facilitate, inhibit, and influence engagement. In the quantitative phase of the study, questionnaires were circulated to women employeees; and in the qualitative phase, semistructured interviews were conducted with employer representatives, most of whom were human resource personnel. Confirmatory factor analysis showed that the three-factor structure (vigour, dedication, and absorption) of the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale fit the sample data reasonably well. Although there is room for improvement, respondents demonstrated acceptable levels of engagement in their work. On the other hand, the qualitative findings showed that employee engagement is impacted by unfavourable working conditions, work–life balance, and the mining industry’s male-dominated work culture. The findings showed that employee engagement should be elevated to a core human resource function. To increase the participation of women in mining, human resource professionals are encouraged to collaborate with mine supervisors, managers, and employees to develop programmes that promote employees’ absorption in and dedication to their work.

Given the global inventory of low grade and refractory gold deposits, processes that could turn these challenged deposits into mines are of considerable interest. Such gold deposits have low value and potentially high operating costs and so they pose special challenges for the mining engineer and metallurgist. Conventionally, refractory gold ores have been processed by whole ore pressure oxidation and roasting, or flotation followed by roasting, pressure oxidation or bio-oxidation of the concentrate. Halide-based processes have recently been developed that might be applied to concentrates. Low grade refractory gold ores have been processed using heap bio-oxidation followed by cyanide heap leaching or milling. Other processes are emerging. Barrick has completed an inventory of emerging technologies (1). A summary of the current status of these developments will be presented with the view that, with additional development, some of these technologies or a combination thereof may unlock the value of these deposits.

New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).
