This seven-chapter document is the first volume of a two-volume report that presents a comprehensive outline of coal-mine electrical power systems from theory to practice. Together, the two volumes contain the vital aspects that go into planning and designing a mine power system. After a short introductory chapter, Chapter 2 discusses the history of electrical use in mining and introduces "typical" mine- power-system arrangements. Chapter 3, 4, and 5 supply basic information on electrical theory, circuit analysis, and motors. Next, the Grounding and Distribution Chapters detail unique aspects of mine power systems. Elements of surface and underground use are included in all these chapters. An index concludes Volume I and is cross-referenced to both report volumes.

THE statisticians had defeated Germany months before she invaded Poland. With batteries of adding machines they had proved that she was suffering from serious deficiencies in critical food- stuffs and in practically all of the raw materials necessary for the conduct of modern warfare. Their calculations showed that with respect to fats, oils, wool, cotton, hides, petroleum, iron, copper and other metals, the Reich was bound to be at a great disadvantage vis-a-vis the French and British as long as the latter could keep open the lines of sea communication. The conclusion seemed obvious-"Germany can't win." The more cautious of the commentators introduced qualifications as to the length of the war and the tightness of the British and French blockade. They also made a third qualification as to the character of the struggle- whether it was to be a war of attrition or a war of movement. But since the invasion of Norway in April, there is no longer any doubt on this score. It is a war of movement-a war in which fuel, lubricants, and metals are being consumed on a scale never before seen.

"INTRODUCTION Control of target stream acidity is widely used in MIW (mining influenced water). Tailoring pH (a measure of acidity) finds application for controlling key chemistry in both process and waste streams. Traditional lime addition for neutralization and precipitation is most often used but has high reagent costs and results in large amounts of mixed metal sludge requiring costly disposal. A new adaptation of BPS’s patented DEMET™ technology (Dynamic Electrolytic Metal Effluent Treatment) platform offers a potentially improved and “reagentless” alternative to traditional chemical addition for pH adjustment. Electricity rather than chemical addition utilized in BPS’s proprietary approach controllably tailors target stream pH. The method offers a simple, low-cost processing technique yielding cleaner treatment chemistry. BPS’s “green” approach may yield lower operating (OPEX) and life cycle costs and significant reductions (up to 50%) in sludge generation compared to conventional lime treatment. It can also allow new opportunities to generate revenue via selective recovery of valuable processing byproducts. Specific savings and revenues depend on the target site chemistries, details, and processing goals. A more detailed discussion of the process and its operational principles may be found in Reference One.[1] Here application of the BPS treatment to POx (Pressure Oxidation) leaching as an alternative to traditional chemical addition is examined. An example operation process flow for gold mining is considered.[2] Promising processing points for potentially replacing conventional processes with DEMET are noted. The possibilities for lowering OPEX costs, lessening sludge creation, and capturing various valuable byproducts and residuals are examined. Financial life cycle benefit estimates of the principal gains provided by DEMET application to the example operation are noted. Extension and generalization of the analyses to a wider range of scenarios is explored."

The Bureau of Mines investigated the availability of flake and high-crystalline natural graphite from 4 domestic and 25 foreign mines and deposits in 11 market economy countries (MEC's). Demonstrated resources were estimated to be 95 million metric tons (Mmt) containing 5.61 Mmt of recoverable flake and high-crystalline graphite products. Fifty-five percent (3.17 Mmt) of the total recovered product is estimated to comprise plus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake pro-ducts and "lump" and "chip" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite A" in this study; 45 pct (2.44 Mmt) of the total is minus 100-mesh (150-µm) flake products and "dust" high-crystalline products, designated as "graphite B." Total production costs, including all costs needed over the life of each operation, were determined at a 0-and 15-pct discounted-cash-flow rate of return (DCFROR) for both graphite A and graphite B products. For a 15-pct DCFROR, 1.74 Mmt (54.9 pct) of the graphite A products is available at $600/mt or less and 2.13 Mmt (67.2 pct) is available for $800/mt or less. For the same DCFROR, 1.08 Mmt (44.3 pct) of the graphite B is available at $200/mt or less, and 1.71 Mmt (70 pct) is available at $325/mt or less. No domestic resources were determined to be economic at present prices. A sensitivity analysis of the relative economics of the Alabama graphite deposits under various operational parameters is presented in an appendix. All evaluations are in January 1984 dollars.

Open-cut mining of copper ores in the western United States is a relatively new industry. At first the mining methods were mainly adapted from those used at open-cut iron mines and at quarries, but now efficient practices that are more suitable for the copper deposits have been developed. The pioneer in this field is the Utah Copper Co., of Bingham, Utah, which deserves great credit for working out much of the early procedure. Stripping began at that mine in 1906, and the large Garfield concentrator was put in commission in 1908. Next in order of development were the Nevada Consolidated Copper Co., at Ely, Nev. ; the Chino mine of the Ray Consolidated Copper Co., at Santa Rita, N. Mex. ; the New Cornelia Copper Co., at Ajo, Ariz. ; the Sacramento Hill mine of the Copper Queen Branch, Phelps Dodge Corporation, at Bisbee, Ariz.; and the open cut of the United Verde Copper Co., at Jerome, Ariz. The Sacramento Hill mine began to produce in 1923, and the United Verde open-cut mine has produced ore mainly in connection with stripping. The writer visited the Utah Copper mine in September, 1923; the Nevada Consolidated in August, 1923; the Chino in July, 1924; and the New Cornelia, the Sacramento Hill, and the United Verde open cut at various times during 1922, 1923, 1924, and 1925, mostly in connection with other work.

"INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the past 12 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development, of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. In spite of the many new insulating materials, both synthetic and manufactured, that have been put on the market since the end of World War II, and notwithstanding the many millions of dollars applied to the development of synthetic mica, natural block mica1 is still a most indispensable insulator in various electronic components. It will remain so, barring some spectacular break-through in research that might provide a substitute fully acceptable as a replacement for mica in all of its superior properties. But this is not to say the future for mica is assured, or free from serious problems. Technological advances have created problems requiring a solution to be found if future requirements are to be filled.

The Bureau of Mines studied single - step catalytic vapor - phase hydrogenation of oils derived from coal and oil shale . Treatment of middle oil , from hydrogenation of bituminous coal , gave good yields of gasoline with a German - made molybdenum- zinc - chromium catalyst . The Bureau also achieved good results with duplicates of this catalyst made from domestic raw materials . In one set of experiments with the German catalyst , 38 to 52 wt pct of feed was converted to gasoline . The total liquid product was 91 to 98 wt pct of the feed . Not all this gasoline can be claimed as production , however , because about 20 pct of the feed was in the gasoline range , and part of it undoubtedly survived the hydrocracking treatment . Hydrogenation of crude shale oil in the presence of cobalt molybdate catalyst produced a total liquid product of 89 wt pct of feed . The hydrogenation converted 27 wt pct of feed to gasoline and 44 wt pct of feed to diesel fuel . The remaining liquid product , 18 wt pct of feed , was residue boiling above diesel fuel . The gasoline was of poor quality , with an octane number of 39.1 . The overall product seemed a suitable feed stock for a conventional refining operation . Coker distillate hydrogenation , using a cobalt molybdate catalyst , gave a total liquid product of 97 vol pct of feed ; of this product 60 vol pct was jet fuel and 40 vol pct was diesel fuel . A symposium was held on January 30 and 31, 1973, at Pittsburgh, Pa., to review the state-of-the-art in designing and utilizing diesel-powered equipment in underground mining. The Health and Safety Activity of the Bureau of Mines sponsored the symposium with major assistance from the following four participating organizations: The American Mining Congress J. Allen Overton, President The United Mine Workers of America Arnold R. Miller, President The National Independent Coal Operator's Association Cloyd D. McDowell, President The Bituminous Coal Operators' Association, Inc. Guy Farmer, President Seventeen papers were presented during four half-day sessions devoted to the general subjects of the diesel engine, the place of the diesel in underground mining, health protection using diesels underground, and maintaining safety of diesels underground. Eleven of the speakers were from industrial organizations here and abroad; one represented the Provincial Government of Nova Scotia; two were with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; and three reported on Bureau of Mines work related to diesels.

The Safety Pays in Mining v2.0 web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app categorizes injury cost by part of body injured, by the cause of the injury, or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 150 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining v2.0 will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries and the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits and will provide some examples of services and personal protective equipment on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining version 2.0 web application by discussing the development and updates to the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app.

A three?stages countercurrent fluidized bed prototipe reactor to neutralize the SO2from smelter gases has been developed. For gases with 8 vol-%SO2, at 800°C and for 4 h mean reaction time of the limestone, the capture of SO2 is 99%, with off gases with 0.07 vol-%. For 2 vol-%SO2, the total capture of SO2 can be obtained at 750°C and 4 h reaction time. The calcine obtained contain a blend of unreacted limestone and calcium sulphatewith minor amounts of residual lime.

As the 2010 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2010 issue of Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 328. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a professional society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that accelerate the advancement of scientific knowledge and enable transfer of technology. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. Through books, magazines, meetings and electronic media, we accomplish the technology exchange that is fundamental to the existence of the Society. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume certainly fulfills that pledge. The 2010 Transactions is the first Transactions to take advantage of new publication technologies. It appears solely as an e-book. The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which will certainly better serve the mining community. I am excited about this development and the opportunities it presents. The 2010 Transactions also contain some of the most exciting research from the past year, including new developments in mineral processing, safety and exploration. Be sure not to miss the two Minerals & Metallurgical Processing issues on the subject of gold hydrometallurgy. This 2010 Transactions comprise of a total of 78 technical papers (582 pages including index), including all 21 papers (136 pages) that were published in 2010 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 62) and all 34 papers (231 pages) that were published in 2010 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 27). Addition, this volume contains 23 papers (194 pages) that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 78 technical papers were peer-reviewed. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and our publications staff. As the 2010 president of SME and on behalf of all our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose volunteer efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

The optimum cut-off grade policy maximizes the net present value (NPV) of an open pit mining operation subject to the mining, processing, and refining capacity constraints. The traditional approaches to cut-off grade determination ignore the escalation of the economic parameters such as metal price and operating costs during life of an operation, and consequently lead to unrealistically higher values of the objective function. Further, the NPV of a mining operation declines due to the depletion of the available reserves, causing a decline in the optimum cut-off grade, i.e. higher cut-off grades in the early years of an operation and lower cut-off grades during the later years. Hence, low grade material mined in the earlier years may be stockpiled for processing during later years to offset the effect of escalating economic parameters on NPV. This paper demonstrates the combined impact of introducing economic parameters, escalation and stockpiling options into the cut-off grade optimization model. The model promises an enhancement in NPV as illustrated in a case study incorporating practical aspects of an open pit mining operation.

Reports for the calendar year 1923 that have been transmitted to the Bureau of Mines of the Department of the Interior by mine officials of the various coal-producing States show that accidents in and around the coal mines resulted in the death of 2,452 men. The output of coal during the year, as reported to the United States Geo- logical Survey, was 641,476,000 tons; hence the fatality rate per million tons was 3.82 as compared with 4.15 for 1922, a decline of about 8 per cent. The average rate for the decade ending with 1922 was 4.11. This reduction of 8 per cent in the fatal-accident rate per million tons is equivalent to the saving of 210 lives--that is, had the fatality rate of 1922 continued through 1923 the number of lives lost would have been 210 more than they actually were. Not only was there a net reduction in the fatality rate from all causes combined, but each of the main causes of coal-mine fatalities also showed a decline. Falls of roof and coal, which generally account for nearly half of all deaths in coal mines, were responsible for 1,158 fatalities in 1923, which represents a rate of 1.81 per million tons as compared with 1.90 in 1922. (See Table 2.) Haulage accidents underground usually cause about 17 per cent of all fatalities, and the reports for 1923 show that 413 deaths were due to this cause, indi- cating a rate of 0.64 per million tons, as against 0.71 for the previous year. Gas and dust explosions killed 372 men, the fatality rate being 0.58; the rate for 1922 was 0.65. Seventy-five deaths were due to electricity, for which class of accidents the fatality rate per million tons was 0.12 as compared with 0.16 the year before. Powder and other explosives caused 114 deaths, representing a rate of 0.18 as compared with 0.19 for 1922. Of the 2,452 fatal accidents during the year, 2,249 occurred under- ground, 46 in shafts, and 157 on the surface. This bulletin, which discusses open-cut mining at the metal mines of the United States, is the last of a series of such papers by the Bureau of Mines describing the principal methods of mining.4 Open-cut mining is applicable to flat-lying mineral deposits relatively near the surface. Vein deposits seldom are amenable to this method, although outcrops of veins sometimes are worked as open pits. Most of the iron ore of the country is mined from open pits; according to the Minerals Yearbook, 67.4 percent was mined from open pits and 32.6 percent from underground mines in 1937. Open-cut mining is relatively new in the copper industry but yields more copper than any other method; in 1937 about 52 percent of the copper ore mined in the United States was taken from open pits. Lead-zinc ore has been produced from open pits in the Joplin (Mo.) district, but most of the deposits in this area, although flat-lying, are too deep to be mined economically by the open-cut method. In 1937 one company at Oronogo, Mo., was stripping overburden and mining mixed oxidized and sulfide ores by this method.

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. WHILE mining engineers have been searching in far corners of the country and of the world for hidden wealth there has grown up around us in nearly every city great wealth-producing mines calling for the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars and yielding products now sold for over half a billion dollars yearly-largely unknown and almost wholly neglected by mining engineers. But this neglect is explainable and excusable. They are industries of very recent origin-practically the growth of the last 25 years. They are in a very large measure the result of tremendous developments in engineering construction and the rapidly expanding use of portland cement concrete for structures of every description. Concrete as a material of construction is going through an evolution very much as did cast iron and other metals used in engineering; and this phase of the industry should appeal to the imagination of metallurgical engineers. At first iron was iron-a material of uncertain properties, owing both to small differences in chemical composition and in methods of manufacture. By successive steps iron was studied and knowledge of its properties developed-the striking effects of very small percentages of other minerals and of various heat-treatments.
