The need for lightweight aggregate for use in concrete products ,and structures has caused the Bureau of Mines to undertake an investigation to determine the availability of suitable raw materials and to study methods, procedures, and equipment to supply that need. Evidence is at hand to prove that the shortage of lightweight aggregate is nationwide. A survey recently covered in a report (13)5/ by the Construction Branch of the National Housing Agency has pointed out the locations in which lightweight aggregates are produced. A study of this information discloses that the producing centers are widespread, and that certain areas, notably the region east of the Mississippi River, and especially the sections along the Atlantic coast line and the Southeastern States, have only a few such plants. Certainly, many localities are badly in need of installations equipped to provide an ample supply of high-grade lightweight aggregate. The work undertaken by the Bureau of Mines includes investigation of the use of clays, shales, slate wastes, coal-mine wastes, diatomite-clay combinations, and various other 'mineral mixtures as possible raw materials. Likewise, special consideration has been given to the development' of equipment and techniques to produce the lightweight products.

THE following presentation is more a summation of observations made and conclusions drawn over a period of three to four years than a report of experiments made with a definite objective. Tests were made, of course, to verify hypotheses, but the large mass of data was collected incidental to other work. Lack of space forbids the presentation of more than a few of those data. On the other hand, it is unfortunate that some of the most illustrative examples are not available. The work is admit¬tedly incomplete but is presented in the hope that it will stimulate further work along a similar line. The answers to many of the questions left unanswered by this paper will be found only after long and painstaking study, such as is scarcely possible in a commercial laboratory where problems of immediate importance consume most of the time. It is also hoped that this study will in some measure throw light on some of the dark spots of steelmaking, and help to clarify some of the annoyingly vague references to "good practice." Only cast steel was studied and the conclusions apply to cast steel, but it is the authors' opinion that the quality of rolled or forged steel is largely dependent on the quality of the ingot, which is a casting. Although this discussion deals almost entirely with inclusions, it is important that the reader understand that only those natural inclusions which owe their origin to the solubility of certain materials in steel and to the chemical reactions of steelmaking are considered. Accidental inclusions, such as entrapped particles of slag, nozzle, runner, or mold are outside its province and are not considered. Such accidental inclusions are always dangerous and should be carefully avoided.

Fifteen boride composites were synthesized by hot pressing and evaluated by physical and incendivity testing as non-sparking tool materials. The incendivity tests, conducted at the U. S. Bureau of Mines, Albany Research Center, compared the boride compo-sites with standard cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide material used for coal cutter bits. Two titanium diboride composites and two zirconium diboride composites out-performed cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide in wear resistance and reduced tendency to cause ignitions. However, three of these candidates exhibited undesirable chipping. The remaining candidate, a TiB2-(Ni, Cu) composite, did not chip, nor did it cause ignitions at levels where cobalt-bonded tungsten carbide tools caused ignitions in the incendivity tests. Thus, this material appears to be a logical candidate for further development.

To compare designs requires the time to develop alternatives, analyze, and then improve on them. A number of tools are available to assist with the first set of requirements, however they are poorly integrated. SHOTPlus is a program to improve the efficiency of blasting operations, by combining measurement and blast design tools, and offers the user the time and means to modify designs and explore alternatives.

The total world steel production in 1998 amounted to approximately 780 000 000 t. The share of electric steelmaking was in the range of 35 per cent and is expected to increase further to over 40 per cent of the world's production within the next ten years. As electric steelmaking is primarily based on the use of scrap and as it is progressing more and more into higher steel grades the need for low-residual metallics will become increasingly important. Consequently, the demand for scrap substitute material will increase, reflected in the world wide spate of interest for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). The increased significance of DRI/HBI as a substitute for steel scrap has obviously emanated also from its comparatively lower and more predictable costs per ton and definable chemistry. In 1998 already 37 million tons of DRI/HBI were globally produced.

"Groundwater inflow into underground constructions may cause hazardous working conditions and environmental problems. It is essential to localize and characterize potential flow paths and to estimate the amount of water leakages, so that appropriate sealing works can be performed. Estimating the amount of water ingress is a multi-phase process starting from qualitative and quantitative examination of rock mass. Due to association of uncertainty, vagueness and incompleteness with the monitored data set, particularly resulted from the in situ tests, accounting relevant approaches such Fuzzy Logic and Recurrent Neural Networks, are proposed in this research for learning acquisition, extraction of rules and prediction of behaviors. The computational set of artificial tools permits using the complex information entities or information granules (rock types, geologic structures, hydro-fracture potential) for data abstraction and derivation of knowledge from records (numerical or linguistic format). This is more a theoretical perspective than a set of methods or principles. As a theoretical perspective, this proposal encourages an approach to data that recognizes and exploits the information present in indexes at various levels of resolution or scales. In this sense, it encompasses the methods which provide flexibility and adaptability in the resolution at which knowledge or information is extracted and represented. The product of merging these tools is a 3D artificial-mapping of rock classification (Qi-system), geological conditions and Lugeon units that permits, as far as possible, to understand more and better the flow behavior."

This investigation was conducted to determine the effects of various rare-earth metal addition practices upon the macrostructure and the pattern of sulfur distribution in steel ingots. Heats of plain carbon steel were melted in a 1-ton, basic electric-arc furnace. Melts were treated with mixtures of rare-earth silicides, aluminum, and cryolite either in the furnace before tap or in the ladle after tap to determine the effects of this form of rare-earth treatment upon ingot macrostructure. Steels thus treated with rare earths in the furnace were characteristically free of the gross subsurface nonmetallics which typically result from conventional rare-earth treatments. Steel treated in the ladle showed only a few such nonmetallics, and practical techniques were developed for eliminating most of these. Results showed that furnace deoxidation was controlled by the concentration ratio of rare earths: aluminum. During casting, deoxidation was controlled by the concentration of rare earths. Oxygen contents equivalent to vacuum ladle degassing resulted from air-melt furnace treatments with the rare-earth mixtures described. Rare earths in steel inhibited the onset of equiaxed grain formation during ingot freezing, and also virtually prevented interdendritic segregation of sulfides.

The Union of South Africa has been interested in oil shale for a long time, and deposits of oil shales, torbanites, and similar rocks have been found in many parts of the country. (Fig. 1.) Samples differ markedly in oil yield and in the characteristics of the oil. The strata vary in thickness, and most of the deposits that have been found are in unfavorable locations because of remoteness from markets or absence of transportation facilities. This report deals mainly with the torbanite deposit near Ermelo, Transvaal, in the Union of South Africa, and the operations of the South African Torbanite Mining and Refining Co., Ltd. (hereafter referred to as Satmar), in mining the torbanite, retorting it, and refining the crude oil.

In the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-mm.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystal-lization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,l Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work. The first alloy was taken from regular mill stock that had been rolled from 0.580 in. to 0.376 in. (14.7 mm. to 9.5 mm.) gage, a reduction of 35.1 per cent. This bar (No. 1) had the following composition: Copper, 69.20 per cent.; zinc, 30.76 per cent.; lead, 0.02 per cent.; iron, 0.02 per cent. The second alloy was also taken from mill stock of 0.325 in. Thiosulfate offers a non-toxic alternative to cyanide for processing gold ores. The mechanism of leaching gold using ammoniacal thiosulfate solution is driven by the Cu(II)-Cu(I) redox couple and is complicated by competing ligands such as NH3 and S2O32-. It is shown that an understanding of the copper speciation and sulfur speciation is required to optimise this system. This paper presents Eh-pH and speciation diagrams for varying concentrations of Cu(II), S2O32- and NH3 and discusses the conditions under which various copper and sulfur species are stable.

The annual consumption of sand and gravel aggregate in 2006 in the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area was about 76 Mt (84 million st) (USGS, 2009), or about 18 t (20 st) per capita. Quaternary alluvial deposits in the modern stream channel of the Agua Fria River west of Phoenix are mined and processed to provide some of this aggregate to the greater Phoenix area. The Agua Fria drainage basin (Fig. 1) is characterized by rugged mountains with high elevations and steep stream gradients in the north, and by broad alluvial filled basins separated by elongated fault-block mountain ranges in the south. The Agua Fria River, the basin?s main drainage, flows south from Prescott, AZ and west of Phoenix to the Gila River. The Waddel Dam impounds Lake Pleasant and greatly limits the flow of the Agua Fria River south of the lake. The southern portion of the watershed, south of Lake Pleasant, opens out into a broad valley where the river flows through urban and agricultural lands to its confluence with the Gila River, a tributary of the Colorado River.

Self-hardening cement-bentontie (c-b) slurry walls were constructed as shear walls to stabilize the downstream slope of Tuttle Creek Dam near Manhattan, Kansas. The slope stabilization was required to protect the existing pressure relief well system located at the downstream toe of the dam. The wells require protection from slope deformation induced by liquefaction of the foundation sands during or immediately after the design seismic event. The shear walls are transverse to the axis of the dam, unreinforced, and relatively brittle members that may be exposed to relatively large shear strains, and possible cracking, during or immediately after shaking. An extensive laboratory investigation was conducted on recovered core samples to optimize the mix design and stabilization scheme. Furthermore, as is the topic of this paper, a portion of the laboratory investigation was to determine the large-strain, or post-peak, shear strength of the c-b material for use in limit-equilibrium slope stability analyses and numerical deformation modeling to assess the magnitude of permanent deformation caused by the design earthquake. These data may be beneficial to other projects that are considering the use of unreinforced c-b slurry walls for seismic retrofit purposes.

Recovery via gravity is one of the oldest mineral processing methods available. Unfortunately, the use of gravity techniques for gold recovery has been in decline for the past century as more effective chemical processes such as flotation and leach/CIP have been developed. Recently, with the push towards more sustainable environmental outcomes, the benefits of gravity separation have become more apparent. While gravity as a unit process is not usually capable of achieving as high a recovery as flotation or whole ore cyanidation, a combination of gravity devices alone or in conjunction with these processes can offer significant advantages to the operator. This paper reviews the range of gravity devices available, their application and the results that can be achieved by maximizing gravity through the use of a combination of gravity recovery devices. Three case studies are provided.

The Juneau Gold Belt, centered on Juneau and approximately 120 miles long by 10 miles wide, stretches from Berners Bay on the north to Windham Bay on the south (fig. D-l). Access within the Juneau Gold Belt is provided by the Glacier, Thane, and North Douglas Highways. The Glacier Highway extends northwest from Juneau for approximately 40 miles to Echo Cove, and the other two roads end 5.5 miles southeast and 12.6 miles west from Juneau, respectively. None of these roads connect with other highway systems and access to other areas is restricted to airplanes, the State ferry system, and commercial barge lines. BUREAU ACTIVITIES The majority of lode gold produced in Alaska came from the Juneau Gold Belt portion of the Juneau Mining District. To evaluate the economic potential of the Gold Belt, the Bureau located 173 mines and prospects within the area. A total of 263 ad its and shafts were found and 56,650 feet of underground workings were mapped. The Bureau collected and analyzed 1,557 samples during the study. In addition, considerable detailed geologic map-ping was done in the vicinity of the mines and prospects from which ore control models were developed.

This report3/ gives the results of a reconnaissance of mining districts in Eureka County, Nevada, made from September 25 to October 20 and from October 27 to November 5, 1577. During this time, virtually all the districts were visited and many data obtained on active and inactive properties. This report covers the locations of the various districts, geological background, ownership and brief descriptions of mines and prospects, information on past and current operations, and, other data likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. From the viewpoint of past production in the county, the silver-lead-gold deposits at Eureka have been tie most important, followed by the silver deposits at Cortez and Mineral Hill. The period of greatest activity in the foregoing districts was from 1870 to 1990, when Eureka was one of the principal mining areas in Nevada; the production of lead was sufficient to affect its price in all the commercial centers of the world. Eureka also merits the distinction of being the birthplace of the silver-lead smelting industry in the United States.

The ore milled from the Lead Lode of The Zinc Corporation leases consists of a fairly granular mixture of galena, marmatite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and lollingite with a gangue association of calcite, quartz, bustamite, rhodonite, mangan-hedenbergite, garnet, fluorite, mangal1o-calcite and apatite. The silver content of the ore occurs in three minerals-tetrahedrite, dyscrasite, and pyrargyrite, the last two mentioned occurring in microscopic association only. Other metallic and gangue minerals are also present in this complex mineralogical association, but do not influence the milling operations. Fortunately, the silver minerals favour the galena and chalcopyrite as their host minerals, thus facilitating the recovery of both copper and silver in the lead concentrate. The ore from the Lead Lode assays from 14-18% lead; 3·0-4·5 oz. silver per ton, and 9·5-12·0% zinc.A parallel lode, known as the Zinc Lode, is well developed in The Zinc Corporation leases. This lode assays from 6-8% lead, 1·5 oz. silver per ton, 18-25% zinc with a siliceous gangue. The common Lead Lode gangue minerals-ealcite, rhodonite, bustamite-are very rare in present underground exposures. No metallurgical work was done on this ore during the pilot plant operations.The aim in the milling process is to produce: 1. A lead concentrate with the maximum economic recovery of lead, silver, gold, copper and antimony, and minimum zinc content.2. A zinc conc,entrate with the maximum economic recovery of zinc, cadmium, and cobalt, and minimum iron, arsenic and fluorine content.3. A waste residue containing sufficient granular material to be utilized as underground fill.In considering the economics of the milling practice the above three requirements plus consideration of the tariffs submitted by the purchasers of concentrates were the deciding factors in the evolution of the present milling practice.Towards the end of 1924 The Zinc Corporation Limited added to and adapted the old zinc tailings plant for the treatment of 5,000 tons of crude ore per week. This plant, which operated until January, 1936, was in general principles similar to the standard Broken Hill methods of ore concentration, whereby the galena was recovered by the gravity concentration methods of Hgging and tabling with selective flotation concentration of the residual galena and marmatite. One important difference from other Broken Hill plants was that the primary grinding of the jig tailing was performed with flint-loaded mills operating in closed circuit with revolving screens. The deterioration of concrete, steel, and timber is a serious hindrance to construction in marine and corrosive environments. Composite materials such as fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) can offer performance advantages for construction in these environments. In the last decade, piling made of FRP composites has been used experimentally throughout North America. However, composites face obstacles because they do not have a long track-record of use in civil engineering structures. A comprehensive review of the current experience in research, testing, design, and practice of composite piling is presented in this paper.

This paper comprises a general outline of all of the developments, including the history, geology, mining, milling, power and transportation installations, at the gold mining operation of La Luz Mines Limited and the copper mining operation of its wholly-owned subsidiary, Rosita Mines Limited, both located in north-central Nicaragua. The low-grade, gold-bearing ore-bodies of La Luz Mines, contained in highly fractured and folded Lower Cretaceous sedimentary rocks, were from 1909 to 1928, mined and treated by primitive methods by the La Luz and Los Angeles Mining Company. The abandoned property was acquired by La Luz Mines Limited in 1936, and was equipped with modern machinery and put into production in 1939. Between 1939 and 1948, the daily rate of production was in-creased from 300 tons per day to 2,-000 ton per day. The ore reserves available for open-pit mining were depleted in 1954. Since then, the entire production has come from under-ground operations.
