In central Washington, six miles south of the small town of Vantage, the flow of the Columbia River is harnessed by the Wanapum Dam which is part of the Priest Rapids Hydroelectric Project owned and operated by Grant County Public Utility District (GCPUD). Extending more than 8,300-feet from bank to bank, the dam includes left and right earth embankments, left and right concrete gravity sections and a 10-unit powerhouse. Adjacent to the right embankment is a concrete gravity spillway featuring radial gates measuring 50-feet-wide and nearly 70-feet-high. In the early 1960’s when Wanapum Dam was built, these seven-story spillway gates were the highest in the world. In late February 2014, 50-years into its service life, during a routine maintenance inspection, observant workers noticed a slight misalignment in the roadway deck curbs and handrails located on top of the spillway. Further survey and inspection efforts uncovered a 65-foot-long by two- inch-wide crack that spanned the full length of Monolith 4. On discovering the extent of the damage, GCPUD initiated immediate drawdown of the reservoir to relieve pressure on the spillway monoliths. Wanapum Reservoir and the areas directly downstream of the dam were immediately closed, boat ramps and inlets were left completely dry, campsites were closed and boating activity was banned on the lake until further investigations and remedial procedures were in place and completed. An extensive root cause analysis ultimately led to the conclusion that errors in the initial design calculations and late changes to the final spillway design led to a condition that generated tensile stresses in the concrete at the upstream face, which over a period of 50-years resulted in the formation of a crack along a horizontal lift joint located about 85-feet below normal pool elevation. Further analysis showed that, although visible distress was found at Monolith 4, there was nothing preventing this issue from happening at other locations along the dam spillway. Although no visible cracking was found in the other monoliths, repair procedures for Monolith 4 would have to be replicated at the remaining monoliths.

Anglo American Platinum's Khomanani 2 shaft changed over from down-dip mining to breast mining in 2004. The changeover was made to ensure that production targets were met, as it was said that predevelopment for down-dip mining was not fast enough to sustain the required ore reserves; nevertheless, production performance did not increase as expected. In this study a trade-off was performed between down-dip mining and breast mining on the Merensky Reef at Khomanani 2 in order to find the most suitable method for mining the Merensky Reef. Data was gathered by means of a literature survey, underground observations, and interviews with personnel as well as data from various departments on the mine. The two mining methods were studied and then evaluated in terms of the following criteria: safety, mining rate, cost and other factors which were identified as the main drivers of the mine. A scaling system was used to rate the performance of the two mining methods. Analysis of the results shows that down-dip mining and breast mining have the same safety performance ratings. Breast mining has a better mining rate performance than down-dip mining. Breast mining was found to be costly in comparison with down-dip mining, which has a good cost performance rating. The overall ratings of the two mining methods are very similar, with down-dip mining achieving a rating of 76 and breast mining 75.5 out of an optimum 102. Khomanani 2 currently practices breast mining, and with such a slight difference in performance rating between the two methods, it will not be worth changing over to down-dip mining as production is likely to be adversely affected during the changeover. Down-dip mining does, however, have potential for improvement in its performance rating. Further studies focusing on the improvement of the mining rate performance for down-dip mining are needed to see if this potential can be realized. If significant improvement can be made in the performance rating for down-dip mining, a changeover to down-dip mining can be reconsidered.

Today?s modern mining operations have literally dozens of applications and systems generating data whose information very often, are not crossed or centralized for operational decisions. In remote locations, the information and situation awareness is typically limited to the location itself. In addition, access to that information is limited to a small, select group of personnel that have received training on how to interpret the results. When the situation affects another area of the mine then information is relayed to the applicable areas involved. Few workers have time to analyze the situation thoroughly, to see how it affects the mines symbiotic relationship within all areas of production. If the capability to correlate and measure events and situations that affect your overall key performance indicators are not in place, the opportunity to identify process improvement becomes more difficult.

"The deposition of tailings under water is considered to be one of the most environmentally promising and potentially cost effective methods to reduce or eliminate acid mine drainage from tailings. One of the concerns of subaqueous deposition has been that metals may leach into the cover waters, thereby increasing aqueous metal concentrations to higher than acceptable limits. This potential was seen to have an even greater possibility for impact when the tailings are deposited under acidic lake water.The following paper summarizes the results of subaqueous tailings pilot column test work conducted to determine the effects of subaqueously deposited tailings on lake water and tailings pore water. Two types of tailings were tested: high sulphide tailings (pyrrhotite concentrate), and low sulphide tailings (end of pipe slime tailings).Data was collected from five columns over a 13 month test period. The results indicated that a stagnant I 000 mm water cover was capable of maintaining the underlying tailings in a reducing condition. The upwards diffusion of pore water resulted in a pH increase in the waters overlying the thickened pyrrhotite tailings and the pyrrhotite tailings with a shallow cover of substrate. A conductivity gradient between the tailings and the water cover caused a diffusion of salts upwards into the overlying water column. Precipitation noted at the tailings water interface may be related to the precipitation of ferric oxyhydroxides, which resulted in a decrease in Fe concentrations noted in the water cover. Other metal concentrations did not exhibit significant increases in the water cover. A sulphate concentration gradient between the tailings and the water cover may have caused the diffusion of SQ4 from the tailings into the water cover."

Drilled shafts have become an economical foundation choice for bridges in the northeast United States, especially when they can be constructed over water without the use of cofferdams. For the Boscawen-Canterbury Bridge over the Merrimack River in New Hampshire, an unusual design was used to avoid the use of cofferdams and avoid the need for pier caps at the waterline. This design used a pair of integral drilled shaft ? columns to form a bent type of substructure for support. Drilled shafts were 8-foot diameter, about 90 feet deep, with 16-foot long rock sockets. These are integrally constructed with 6-foot diameter reinforced concrete columns extending 37 feet from the waterline to the superstructure. Design load cases focused on lateral loads from ice flows, stream flows, wind and seismic events. Alternative analyses using different methods were made to check the design results. This paper discusses the subsurface conditions, design of the drilled shafts and columns, rebar and joint detailing issues, and construction of the drilled shafts.

"Performance data for both wet and dry grinding of materials have been obtained in this novel, planetary ring-roller mill over wide ranges or operating conditions. The Szego mill consists of a stationary cylindrical shell inside which grooved, radially mobile rollers rotate, driven by a central shaft. The mill has several internal design variables such as number, diameter and length of rollers as well as size, shape and pitch oi helical grooves. It is compact, has a high specific capacity, modest power consumption, and can grind many materials down to ultrafine powders. Illustrative data on product fineness and mill power consumption are given along with results from studies on grinding kinetics.INTRODUCTIONThe extensive use and importance of grinding as a unit operation, coupled with the rather low energy efficiency of conventional equipment provide a challenging incentive to investigate novel methods of comminution. Yet, most current development work is taking place in mill performance modelling and optimization, or with various detailed improvements rather than in the field of new equipment development.This paper is a report on the development of a ring-roller mill invented by the late L.L. Szego which embodies several novel concepts. The mill has a broad range of applications, may be operated wet or dry, and can grind materials down to ultrafine sizes with modest energy consumption. It has been developed by General Comminution Inc. in close cooperation with the University of Toronto."

J. Richter and D. Schulze (Deutschen Akademie der Wissenschafte zu Berlin)—Introduction. In a recent paper R. G. Garlick and H. B. Probst reported on experimental results of investigations of room-temperature slip in zone-melted tungsten single crystals.17 In the paper it was pointed out that slip lines could be detected with an optical microscope only after about 10 pet plastic strain of the crystal. In our investigations we could observe slip lines in tungsten single crystals of defined orientations already with an elongation of 0.02 to 0.03 pet.18"9 Experimental Technique and Results. The tungsten single crystals were produced from 4 to 5 mm sintered rods* as starting material by electron- beam zone melting. With single-zone-pass melting a speed of 0.5 mm per min was used, while three-pass melting could be handled at a speed of 3 mm per min. Crystal axis orientations were located in the shaded area of the stereographic triangle, see Fig. 6. Orientation 1 is located at about 18 deg and orientation 2 at about 5 deg on the great circle from [011] to [ill]. This corresponds approximately to the orientations P and M referred to by Garlick and Probst. Our single crystals had a length of about 70 mm and were profiled solely by electrolytic means, leaving grip ends at both ends of the crystals. Between the latter, a cylindrical crystal of 45 to 50 mm length and about 2.4 mm diam was obtained. The crystals were deformed at room temperature in a commercial tensile-testing machine to obtain a strain of 0.02 to 5 pet. The average strain rate e = eP/t for all tensile tests amounted to approximately 10 -6 to 10-5 per sec, with ep representing plastic strain and t the duration of applied stress. In Fig. 7 a crystal is shown elongated by 0.03 pet. The picture was obtained by means of an optical microscope. Figs. 8 and 9 give electron-microscopic pictures of slip lines of crystals elongated by 0.07 and 1.1 pet, respectively. In January 2007, Fultondale Alabama opened a new elementary school. Site work at the old school location included blasting activities and the old school building was scheduled for demolition. With help from Apache Construction, blasting was scheduled to be performed in close proximity to the old school building prior to the demolition. Arrangements were made to perform extensive monitoring on the old school building during the blasting activities. The monitoring plan for the project included: • Pre and post blast inspections were performed on the structure; • Conventional crack monitors were installed at 22 locations throughout the structure; • Digital displacement monitors were installed at 6 locations on the structure; and • Seismographs were used to monitor structure vibration at 6 locations and ground vibrations at 9 locations. Blasting activities were allowed to produce vibration levels well above the safe levels established by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM). Vibration levels up to 7.44 in/sec were recorded with no damage noted. Permanent deformation was recorded on vibration levels of 9.68 and above. Not only did this project reinforce previous studies which indicate that concrete block walls can withstand vibration levels well above 2.0 in/sec, this study was also a good example of employing new technology to help determine if/when damage occurs on a specific structure.

Precast prestressed concrete piles designed to be end-bearing in a sand stratum at Drax Power Station met with extremely variable resistance during driving. Some piles came to virtual refusal almost immediately on entering the sand whereas others were driven to considerable penetration with very low resistance. Redriving and load tests on piles experiencing low resistance on initial drive showed that take up in strength occurred over a relatively short period of time. Investigations involving the use of pneumatic piezometers revealed the development of significant excess pore pressures during driving. Samples from boreholes showed that piles met the least resistance when the sand had a high silt content. Comparison with the original site investigation data demonstrated the difficulties in predicting detailed pile behaviour. The varied behaviour could not be related to the original borehole logs or to SPT or static cone penetrometer results. The factors controlling pile driving behaviour were essentially geological and could only be explained with reference to local soil grading.

It has been shown that grain-boundary migration during high-temperature creep can reduce or even prevent the formation of intercrystalline voids, giving a considerable increase in ductility.' A similar observation has been made in a recent investigation of the creep properties of various grades of nickel and nickel alloys. The results can be illustrated by the observations made on: a) Pure vacuum-cast nickel (99.993 pct Ni) b) Impure vacuum-cast nickel (99.97 pct Ni) c) Pure nickel containing internal voids (produced by a process of intering). d) A substitutional solid solution alloy of pure nickel containing 1.16 pct Sn. All the materials were given a high-temperature anneal (>850°C) to produce a stable grain size of 7 to 10 grains per linear mm. The apparatus and techniques used to obtain the present results have been described elsewhere.' In this series, grain growth was observed only in the highest-purity, vacuum-cast metal. Thus we may consider that in the other materials grain-boundary migration was prevented by either preexisting voids or solute atoms. A damaged outlet pipe beneath Lenihan Dam has restricted reservoir discharges, severely constraining the owner?s groundwater recharge program. The solution, a new outlet pipeline through the dam?s right abutment, includes an approximately12.2-m-deep (40-ft-deep) shaft and 618.7-m-long, 4.3-m-diameter (2,030-ft long, 14-ft-diameter) tunnel mined in Franciscan melange composed of hard blocks of rock and soft clayey matrix. Alternating road header with drill and blast operations and using steel ribs and shotcrete have proven a flexible combination for handling the variable ground conditions. Excavating the shaft and connecting it to the tunnel require lowering the reservoir for five months, during which time careful construction sequencing and use of a tunnel plug eliminate the risk of an uncontrolled discharge.

The Norwegian ferroalloy industry has high ambitions regarding environmental standards. Basic research work has been performed to improve the fundamental understanding of ferroalloy processes and the environ-mental aspects. This paper will present work dealing with the understanding of formation and control of NOx, PAH and dioxins. During this work various techniques and methods have been applied, such as comprehensive industrial measurements, laboratory experiments, model development and application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The main goal has been to reduce the environmental impact of ferroalloy plants, by means of improving the combustion processes done by introducing new charging routines and optimized furnace operations, instead of installing expensive gas treatment systems. The Norwegian obligations in accordance with the Gothenburg protocol are to reduce the NOx emissions by 30%, compared with the 1990 level within 2010. Measures developed in this work have resulted in 40-60%reduction in NOx emission, and major reductions in PAH and dioxins for ferrosilicon and silicon metal plants. This has been achieved by introducing semi continuous charging and improved furnace operations. Semi continuous charging and optimized furnace operations are shown to reduce the blowing activity (i.e. emission of large quantity of SiO over the charge by direct channelling from the crater zone). It also reduces variation in off-gas temperature and dust production. To understand the processes and to achieve our results we have used online equipment, with fast sample rates and response times, to measure the off-gas compositions and temperatures. Most of the measuring techniques used are based upon optical principles making use of the absorption- and emission spectrum of the gases. In addition a new prototype instrument is developed for continuous measurement of off-gas characteristics, total dust amount and off-gas temperature. The presented work is a result of a long term co-operation research and development teamwork, between the industry and the research community, and has improved both the process and reduced the emissions. The work has introduced new process design and operation standards, and has resulted in ferroalloy production with better environmental standards.

"This paper presents the principles and application of a recently developed control system for flotation columns and column circuits. The control system uses triple pressure sensors to directly sense zone densities and level, and to help in characterizing the operating behaviour of individual columns. A complete expert system development tool is incorporated within the system to provide the facility for full operator training, an on-line help facility, and a means for incorporating the column behavioural patterns into decision making rules. The system is configurable to any number of columns and can be run in either supervisory mode or direct control through Minnovex PIO software. Additional process signals can be interfaced with the system if desired. Operating experience with the control system on the Minnovex column flotation pilot plant is described.I: INTRODUCTIONColumn flotation cells have been more difficult to control and are more sensitive to circuit changes than conventional mechanical flotation cells. This susceptibility encouraged investigation into various types of control strategies ranging from inexpensive single pressure measurements for level control, to highly instrumented and expensive systems using a variety of control methods.Flotation operators, in many cases, do not understand the column control philosophy or have not been trained to deal with this new type of cell. Some operators have subsequently absolved themselves of the column operating responsibility. Some column cells, for example, have run for hours with slurry pouring over the top or no froth coming off at all.ColumnEX is a column flotation control system which was developed from the viewpoint of an operating shift foreman who wishes to:1. control the column or column circuit through a genuine understanding of what is happening inside the columns, and2. to share this knowledge with his flotation operators and be available to guide them through times of circuit upsets."

It is becoming increasingly common practice to re-use existing foundations for new projects, especially on urban sites where geotechnical conditions are congested. A knowledge of the foundation dimensions and capacity is essential for this to take place, however, as-built records are often non-existent. Non-Destructive evaluation (NDE) is now becoming an important tool in assessing old foundation properties and their potential for re-use. Pile dimensions are also critical in the power industry, when they are supporting transmission towers which need to be upgraded, and may carry additional wind loading. This paper describes the application of various NDE techniques that are available and how they can be used to determine pile length, shape and capacity in difficult site conditions, including foundations under structures.

Periodic dilute sulphuric acid treatment ofstill, batch-fed, molassesenriched, microaerobic, manganese-dioxide-Ieaching microbial cultures led to marked improvements over untreated cultures. Percentage Mn++ recoveries increased (7X), rate of Mn++ formation improved (3X) and yields of Mn++ per molasses use were more economical (5 X). The yield in terms of molasses used improved with decreasing sugar used (eg 1.17 g Mn++/gram molasses at 0.2 per cent molasses (w/v) feed and 24 per cent (w/v) pulp density MnO2 tailings). The most effective Mn++ leaching in terms ofpercentage recovery (97 per cent) and rate ofleaching (46 mg Mn++/day) was at 0.5 per cent molasses (w/v) and 14 per cent pulp density (w/v) MnO2 tailings.
