The uppermost subsoil profiles of the Bangkok plain can be divided into four layers, namely: weathered clay, soft clay, stiff clay, and dense sand layers. The soft Bangkok clay is a normally consolidated marine clay with built-up preconsolidation effects and overlain by a weathered crust. Up to the present, a large number of full-scale tests on excavations and pile foundations has been made by numerous investigators. Based on these results, the available data are reviewed and evaluated. The results show that for test excavations, the excess pore pressures were overpredicted by the existing theories. The vertical and lateral movements in the excavations can be predicted by the bilinear and non-linear finite elements using appropriate modulus values. Relationships among probability of failure, safety factor, and safety margin of the excavation were also obtained. In the case of pile foundations, good agreement between the measured and predicted ultimate pile capacities were obtained for long piles. The adhesion factors ranged from 0.4 to 1.0 while the average skin friction factor was found to be 0.33. The ultimate capacity of the pile was also predicted successfully by using the Dutch cone data. For lateral deflection of piles, Davisson and Gill's theory predicted well in the low deflection zone while Poulos' theory agreed well in the high deflection zone. From the probabilistic analysis of ultimate pile capacity, the probability of failure was related to the central factor of safety. Hydrometallurgical recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from NiMH battery waste can be performed using sulfuric acid leaching followed by selective precipitation as double salt (REENa(SO4)2·H2O) by adding Na2SO4 as a precipitating agent. The formed double salts can then be further converted with NaOH solution to form REE hydroxides. However, present literature has paid little attention to how to minimize the consumption of reagents in this recovery process. In the current study, a process model was built using HSC Sim software, and metamodeling of the simulated flowsheet was conducted with the design of experiments (DOE), after which the basic functionality of the flowsheet was verified by experimental work, starting from sulfuric acid leaching of spent batteries. As the process is based on chemical circulation internally in the process, the objective was to investigate the accumulation of the elements in solution, specifically Na+ , K+ , SO4 2− ions and impurities liberated in the NaOH conversion step. It was found out that metamodeling could be utilized in obtaining first estimate of the process behavior, prior to any experiments. Flowsheet functionality with circulated solution was confirmed, obtaining at best 96.9% La recovery.

This paper presents a simplified computerized method for the prediction of maximum subsidence and the subsidence profile for the Appalachian Coal Basin using the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method. Several case histories are cited to demonstrate the appropriateness of the predictive method. In addition, sample runs and a detailed listing of the computer program is provided. Other popular subsidence prediction methods are discussed and compared with the Hyperbolic Function Profile Method.

Heterogeneity and discontinuity significantly affect rock strength. For accurate stability prediction, intact rock behavior is imperatively included in rock mass behavior. However, past research largely used arbitrary scaling approaches to produce rock strength. This paper considers a stochastic approach in order to determine the strength of a rock. Based on the laboratory data, a MATLAB® with extreme value stochastic model generates a database for each physico-mechanical property. Then FLAC® simulates laboratory-sized rock specimens. The grids developed in the numerical model can in turn develop random material properties in MATLAB®, which researchers then applied to the final FLAC® model. Model runs simulate the approach performed in the laboratory. The results from the model indicate that a stochastic approach produces strengths that are lower than a deterministic approach. Failure modes for each specimen are different, similar to observations in the laboratory. In addition, random density also influences the failure mode, highlighting the importance of stochastic analysis in rocks.

The chromite deposits along the Stillwater complex in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., have at various times been studied and reported on by the Federal Geological Survey, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, other Government agencies, and private interests, Several of the deposits were explored to a mall extent by the owners during the World War of 1914-17, but no production resulted. The importance of these deposits and the urgent necessity of developing large domestic sources of chromite were realized shortly before the beginning of the recent World War. These deposits were therefore investigated and developed by Government agencies and., as a result, now afford the largest known reserves of chromium in the United States. In 1939, under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey made preliminary investigations of these deposits. As a result, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive program of trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling. This work was begun in August 1939 and continued to April 1943. The Bureau of Mines also performed numerous metallurgical tests on the beneficiation of the chromite ores and concentrates and for the production of chromium metal there from. Research continues as a means toward utilizing these ores.

The income of the Institute is derived from dues, subscriptions to MINING AND METALLURGY and sale of publications. These sources are fortunately supplemented by the interest from invested funds now amounting to over $500,000, a considerable portion constituting endowments for especial purposes. Aside from the medal funds the principal endowments are the James Douglas Fund for support of the Library, the Rocky Mountain Fund and the Seeley W. Mudd Memorial Fund. The income from the two last named is available for the support of research and a variety of other purposes. It is allocated by the Board of Directors upon recommendation of standing committees in each case. An active effort is being made to increase the endowments of the Institute, it being felt that unusual opportunities exist for research and public and professional service through the organization and at a minimum of expense. The Australian underground coal mining industry is increasingly operating in an environment that challenges traditional concepts of coal pillar design, against a background of heightened expectations and demands from other stakeholders with regard to the protection of both natural surface features and burgeoning civil infrastructure. The result is greater possibility of conflict between mine operators, developers and regulatory bodies, with potential for unnecessary sterilisation of Australia?s coal resources and/or escalating surface development / infrastructure protection costs. On the positive side some significant advances have occurred in the general level of understanding of pillar behaviour and stability, both in Australia and overseas. This paper examines some current issues in coal pillar design, focussing particularly on the application and limitations of analytical models of pillar loading. Established methodologies are reviewed and alternative approaches explored, including examples of key geometrical, geological and probabilistic concepts. Practical experiences from the Southern Coalfield of New South Wales (NSW) are examined for the purpose of highlighting critical variables. Finally, some suggestions are made with regard to the direction and opportunities for future research, with particular regard to coal pillar loading, in the interests of all stakeholders.

Previous studies conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have shown that approximately 90% of coal miners and 49% of metal/nonmetal miners had a hearing impairment by age 501. Mine workers are exposed to additional noise levels underground due to the reflection of machine generated noise that would otherwise dissipate in an above ground setting. Determining the sound absorption coefficients is essential in modeling the sound field in an underground mining environment. Sound absorption is a measure of the amount of acoustic energy that strikes a surface and is absorbed, rather than reflected. The acoustic environment that mining machines operate in is a critical factor affecting the sound pressure level exposure for mining machine operators. Impedance tube testing is an inappropriate method for determining underground absorption coefficients due to the brittle composition of some of the materials such as coal and slate. Classic absorption coefficient estimation using T60 measurements will not work well in an underground environment because the theory assumes: a finite room, a diffuse field, and relatively uniform absorption. None of these assumptions are true in an open-ended mine entry. This paper will present a method using a ray-tracing technique to determine absorption coefficients for underground mines. Absorption coefficients are determined and presented for octave bands from 63 Hz to 8 kHz. The absorption coefficients will be essential for determining and predicting potential overexposure to machine operators in different mine environments.

The MIDAS project is funded by the European Commission (DG Research) and began on the 1st November 2013. The project will investigate the environmental impact of deep-sea mineral and energy extraction: specifically, polymetallic sulphides, manganese nodules, cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts and the potential mining of rare earth elements. As deep-sea mining becomes ever closer, and the International Seabed Authority begins to develop its regulatory framework for exploitation of deep-sea minerals, MIDAS is well timed to provide fundamental scientific information. The MIDAS partnership represents a unique combination of scientists, industry, social scientists, legal experts, nongovernmental organisations and small and medium enterprises. MIDAS is carrying out research into the nature and scales of the potential impacts of mining including 1) physical disturbance of the seabed by mining, the creation of mine tailings; 2) the potential effects of particle-laden plumes in the water column, and 3) the possible toxic chemicals that might be released by the mining process. Key biological unknowns, such as connectivity between populations, impacts of the loss of biological diversity on ecosystem functioning, and how quickly the ecosystems will recover will all be addressed. The plan is to use this information to aid development of recommendations for best practice in the mining industry. A key component is the involvement of industry within the project and through stakeholder engagements to find feasible solutions. The project will work closely with European and international regulatory organisations to take these recommendations forward into legislation. A major element of MIDAS will be to develop methods and technologies for 1) preparing baseline assessments of biodiversity, and 2) monitoring activities remotely in the deep sea during and after exploitation, including ecosystem recovery. To carry out this work MIDAS is conducting a number of research cruises to examine the above issues at potential sites for exploitation of SMS and nodule deposits. This talk will present some of the recent findings of the project.

Anomalous mining conditions can be described where the level of hazard is increased relative to normal conditions within a mining area. Normal conditions would be those defined as a Ground Control District in a mine’s code of practice, and for which mine standard support layouts are generally developed. It has been found that up to 80% of fall of ground accidents occur where anomalous mining conditions exists, typically in the vicinity of geological weaknesses. These areas require specific attention to ensure they are readily anticipated and identified and that appropriate strategies are used to reduce the hazards associated with them. As part of SIMRAC project GAP 607 checklists to aid identification and best practice mining methods were identified for a range of geotechnically anomalous conditions.

Human beings are natural storytellers and story listeners. We learn very early that stories entertain us, but also give us the ?rules? about what is expected of us and how to make meaning of our experiences. Stories are integral to our lives, and have great power to change or influence how we think or how we react. They are an innate part of how we learn, and have obvious benefits to trainers or educators who are trying to impact what and how we learn. This paper and presentation discuss the social and cultural power of stories, and how they have been used to develop training for skilled blue-collar workers. Included will be examples as well as suggestions for trainers on where to find stories, what type of stories to pay attention to, and how to use them to improve occupational safety training.

The zinc-lead ore reserves of the Tri-State district of Kansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma, as of December 31, 1947, are estimated at a total of 66,100,000 tons of crude ore containing 2.18 percent metallic zinc and 0.38 percent metallic lead. The Bureau of Mines began estimating the reserves in October 1945 and completed the' work December 31, 1947. A total of 38,900 acres of land representing approximately 5 percent of the area of the district is covered in this report. The work was confined for the most part to properties developed or partly developed by drilling and underground workings, and to acreage sufficiently drilled out to indicate ore of enough tonnage to make a commercial undertaking. The acreage in which ore reserves exist is widely distributed in all three States. A map of the Tri-State area is shown in figure 1. The remaining 95 percent of the area is not necessarily nonproductive but represents, possibilities for future exploration and development of additional mineral resources when and if economic conditions or national necessity encourage such work. Of the total reserves, 41 percent are in Missouri, 38 percent in Kansas, and 21 percent in Oklahoma.

Sustainable development is one of the central themes of the work of the World Health Organization; chemical safety is one of its important components. For more than 25 years, WHO has had specialized units for assisting member countries in dealing with their problems in chemical safety. For one of the units involved, International Programme on Chemical Safety, a reorientation is in progress to make best use of existing resources, and to prioritise the work to optimally correspond to the needs of the member countries. The risk assessment work of IPCS, and specifically, the work on chromium and chromium compounds, are discussed.

During the past five years under contract with the U. S. Bureau of Mines (BOM Contract J0308002). West Virginia University's Mining Extension Service (WVU-MES) has designed, developed) and delivered to the mining industry a comprehensive training program for Mine Rescue (MR) teams and a management planning tool for Mine Emergency Preparedness. The Mine Rescue team program is systematically built on a set of training objectives, backed up by content, allowing mine operators to conduct team training activities. These materials are user-ready, provide the MR principles and practices for both initial and advanced training, and supply teams with exercises geared to problem-solving activities. In addition to an instructor's program guide, the eight (8) modules that comprise the initial (20 hour) MR training are: an Introduction to Mine Rescue, an Introduction to Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), a set of modules covering each approved minimum 2-hour SCBA (i.e.) the Draeger BO 174-A. the McCaa) the Aerolox. & the Scott Rescue-Pak), and a manual on Auxiliary Apparatus as well as the Chemox Auxiliary SCBA. Advanced, annual refresher training (40 hour) is covered by seven (7) modules that spell-out the principles and practices needed to establish surface organization, to handle mine gases as well as mine ventilation, to conduct exploration, for fires, firefighting, and explosions, to rescue survivors and recover bodies, and to accomplish a mine recovery. Approved by MSHA in 1984 to meet requirements for 30 CFO. Part 49, these materials provide a basis for trainers' instruction, for comparison of team capabilities, for modifying programs resources, and services, and for program planning. The Mine Emergency Preparedness Program (MEPP) is used by management as a tool in the preparation of company personnel for handling a mine emergency operation. As a wholly new program. MEPP depends upon development of a Mine Emergency Organization and Emergency Operations Procedures. It also requires regular scheduling of drills) periodic mock emergencies, and evaluation of organizational responses and program performance beyond required training of mine rescue teams. MEPP materials are arranged into three sets of guides: 1) the Preparedness Program System Guides include an Executive Summary, a Program Director's Guide Mine Emergency Organization, and Emergency Operations Procedures; 2) the Emergency Organization (MEO) User's Guides cover the Rescue and Advisory Division, the Technical/Safeguarding Division, and the Surface Support Division; and 3) the Emergency Procedures (EOPS) User's Guides detail Containment Level Procedures, Notification Level Procedures. Mobilization Level Procedures, and Deployment Level Procedures.
