Keyboard patterns of hundreds of minor faults with vertical displacements of 3 mm to 2 m occur within the Greta coal seam and cause serious mining problems in collieries. Many of the faults are concentrated in linear zones termed swarms. One swarm is 600 m wide and more than 800 m long and others are of comparable size.The minor faults between the swarms are normal and are relatively widely spaced and show dip-slip movements, but the faults within a swarm are clustered and show strike-slip and oblique-slip movements. Fault swarms ofthis size and frequency have not previously been described from the Sydney Basin or on a comparable scale elsewhere but appear to be a widespread phenomenon in Australian coalfields. The faults are assigned to classes onthe basis of orientation which are then assigned to sequential phases I to IV on the basis of offsetting relations between representatives of each class. Phase I faults are minor thrusts. Phase IT, Ill, and IV faults are concentratedin the swarms and show sinistral strike-slip and normal dip-slip movements. The interference of slickenlines indicates that multiple movements have occurred within a single phase; their order is (i) strike slip (ii) dip slip and (iii) oblique slip. All faults truncate and post-date both cleat and sedimentary "stone" dykes.Phase I minor thrusts trend at a high angle to the Hunter Thrust and are considered to predate the Late Permian movements on the Hunter Thrust. Phase II and III minor faults are younger and may be any age between the latePermian and Tertiary.

The Golden Cross Gold Mine Project is now fully operational and into its second year of operation. Because of its location in the sensitive Coromandel Peninsula , strict water management and environmental requirements had to be met. This led to the development of new technologies for cyanide recovery and the adoption of advanced water management and water treatment systems. This paper discusses the water management and treatment system adopted for contaminated water at Golden Cross and provides data on the operational history to date.

Historical production data and reserve decline rates can be used both to predict future coal production rates and to estimate when the reserve will be depleted. Reserve estimates inferred herein from historical production data and decline rates are commonly lower than estimates made from geologic data. The latter include significant amounts of lower quality (deeper, thinner, higher sub) coal which may be mined when the better deposits are depleted.

The emergence of Impact and Benefit Agreements (IBAs) in the Canadian mining sector has been read by many as a positive governance innovation. Negotiated directly between mineral resource developers and Aboriginal communities with limited government interference, IBAs serve to manage impacts associated with a mining project and deliver tangible benefits to local communities. Notwithstanding their increasing use and significance, limited systematic analysis has been undertaken to determine whether they are, in fact, working. This paper reports on the effectiveness of a number of IBAs negotiated in support of three northern Canadian diamond mines, drawing on evidence from time-series data, key informant interviews, and focus group meetings in Yellowknife and Dettah, NWT, and Kugluktuk, NU. While some deficiencies were apparent and perceptions of effectiveness varied somewhat by Aboriginal community, the IBAs were generally found to be meeting their objectives, especially with respect to the delivery of benefits. For Aboriginal communities affected by mineral development in the Canadian North, this represents a significant change to typical outcomes of the past. Moving forward, research on IBA effectiveness needs to adopt a longer timeframe and begin to gauge the degree to which IBAs are able to address long-standing concerns associated with hinterland resource extraction beyond their agreement-specific objectives.

Coal augering is an ideal method for recovering coal from the highwalls of open cut coalmines. Coal augering is a simple process whereby additional flights are added to the auger cutting head and auger holes are drilled at 1.9 m diameter up to 200 metres deep. Traditional monitoring was located at the mouth of the hole and if methane was encountered above two per cent, inert gas was delivered into the mouth of the hole to deplete the oxygen content at the auger cutting head below 12 per cent. The auger operator was asked the question ‘how do you know that this is the case?’ Trials were undertaken to prove that the oxygen content at the cutting head did drop below 12 per cent (the lowest limit for methane to ignite, also known as the oxygen nose point). Initial trials showed that the oxygen content in the mouth of the hole did not drop below 12 per cent and modifications were made to hold the inert gases in the mouth of the hole so that the auger flights could take this inert gas into the hole. In-hole monitoring, after completion of mining and after extracting the auger flights, showed that the atmosphere quickly returned to fresh air. In-hole monitoring was also tried during the augering process and yielded valuable results. Four significant soil nail wall projects in the eastern United States were recently completed with a combined area of 175,000 square feet of finished shotcrete surface. These projects required the use of innovative design and construction methods in order to address various challenges, including slide-prone back slope materials, perched water, highly erodible rock materials, curved wall alignments, very tight construction tolerances and unexpected subsurface conditions. Special focus is given to issues such as bench excavation, soil nail installation methods, shotcrete mix design, anticipated shotcrete quantities, shotcrete nozzlemen qualifications and weather conditions, in order to provide a lessons-learned database for future soil nail wall design and inspector considerations. These projects also underscore the importance of design engineer and soil nail wall contractor qualifications as well as effective communication with the owner.

The commonly used Stopes-Heerlen coal petrographic classification and nomenclature has over the years been subject to variable interpretations. This paper discusses the problem with specific reference to the inertinite maceral group. The effect of various interpretations of the Stopes-Heerlen system on maceral analysis is discussed and illustrated by means of comparative analyses conducted by a number of laboratories in Australia.An attempt is made to define the reflectance thresholds used by the authors to subdivide the inertinite group; the genetic and technological significance of these thresholds are compared.The difficulties of distinguishing structured and nonstructured macerals of the inertinite group are discussed in terms of possible improvements to the present StopesHeerlen system by extending the classification to include transitional maceral types.

PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

Experimental petrology may be used to accurately constrain PTX conditions in order to calibrate and understand geologic processes. This method may be used to answer postulated questions, by recreating known geologic conditions and observing changes in the experimental charges. The purpose of this project was to determine the eutectic composition and temperature in the ternary system PbS-FeS-ZnS ¦ (Ag2S), at ambient and elevated pressures and elucidate if the sulfides of the Broken Hill orebody may have been partially molten during highgrade (granulite facies) metamorphism. The study determined the eutectic temperature and composition in the system PbS-FeS-ZnS to be 800¦2¦C and 62.5% PbS, 30.5%FeS, 7% ZnS respectively, at one atmosphere, and the eutectic temperature at 27 kbars was found to be 960¦C¦10¦C, with a eutectic composition enriched in ZnS relative to the one atmosphere eutectic. the addition of lwt.% Ag2S to the system depresses the eutectic temperature to 772¦2¦C at 1 atmosphere and below 810¦5¦C at 5 kbars. The conditions of peak metamotphism for the cental and southern areas of the Broken Hill Block, New South Wales, Australia , lie above the solidus of the PbS-FeS-ZnS-Ag2S system, strongly suggesting that partial melting occurred in the orebody.

Underhand cut and fill mining methods are used at the Lucky Friday, Stillwater, and Galena mines in the western US in an effort to safely mine in difficult ground conditions and as a primary mining method where access below the ore is limited. The method has evolved at each mine to meet the unique situations associated with their milling procedure and mine layout. Details of the operational aspects of the backfilling and mining cycles at each mine are presented in this paper, accompanied by a summary of the mechanical properties of the backfill and its in-situ geomechanical behavior.

Drilled shafts and precast concrete piles were installed for the foundation of several structures in a reconfiguration project of a refinery in Minatitlan, Veracruz, in the Gulf of Mexico. The soils are alluvial deposits of flat land from the Coatzacoalcos River, which are embedded with layers of sand, soft clay, and peat. As part of a QC/QA program, load tests, both static and dynamic, axial and lateral, were performed. In this paper results of 32 axial tests are presented, in which typical load-displacement curves were measured at the top of the foundation elements; from the interpretation of these plots, data were recorded for ultimate side shear and in some cases for end bearing capacities, which are compared with the theoretical results of the final stage of the foundation design. The comparison shows that under allowable loads, side shear determines the bearing capacity of piles, even when the tip is embedded in a hard layer. Underestimation of the side shear is evident; therefore design criteria, as well as the methods used for obtaining soil parameters, should be reviewed.

This paper describes the development and implementation of an engineered heap (EH) approach to leaching low-grade, chalcopyrite-bearing ore at Freeport-McMoRan?s mine in Morenci, Arizona. The technical evolution of the engineered heap concept is described together with the challenges and benefits following implementation.

The Canadian Rare Earth Elements Network (CREEN) was formally launched at the Rare Earth Symposium at The Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (MetSoc) Conference of Metallurgists in October 2013. CREEN is an industry-led, multi-stakeholder network focused on providing collaborative solutions that will advance Canada’s REE sector to produce a significant proportion of the global production of separated critical rare earth products by 2018. The Network is industry driven by companies with REE projects under development and supported by universities, engineering firms, national and commercial laboratories, and government. CREEN aims to accelerate the development and delivery of timely solutions to technical and economic issues specifically facing Canada’s emerging rare earth sector. It will facilitate partnerships with other national and international organizations to leverage existing research initiatives. It will also support training and education to ensure that the needed qualified human resources are available to achieve the sector’s goals. CREEN membership spans the full rare earth supply chain and technical support organizations, from prospective producers, advanced project developers, national and commercial laboratories, engineering consultants, university researchers, and other innovators. Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

EPA NRMRL Mine Waste Technology Program and Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting an in-situ technology demonstration at the Anchor Hill Pit Lake, Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site. The goal is to develop in-situ treatment cost/performance data for potential application in long-term water treatment/management at Gilt Edge and similar sites. The pit contained 77,000,000 gallons of pH 3water with elevated metals, sulfate, and nitrate. The Green World Science® patented process for in situ treatment was implemented to isolate and sequester metals; create stable long-term water quality and restore a sustainable ecosystem. COCs have decreased more than 99%, and dissolved discharge standards were attained.

From presently available components a portable, rugged, reliable apparatus can be built which will be able to detect methane concentrations of 0.1% and lower in air. Sensitivity and design considerations of the apparatus are given. Ways to build even simpler and cheaper apparatus in the future are indicated. Traditionally the problem of detecting and monitoring the presence of dangerous gases present in small concentrations in air has been a difficult one. Whether canaries,' or sophisticated chemical or thermal conductivity methods are used, they seem to be either slow, cumbersome, or otherwise not completely satis factory. A seemingly natural way of gas detection is to measure the strength of absorption undergone by light of a wavelength that the gas to be detected absorbs. This method has been difficult to apply in view of the low power output over a narrow wavelength range in the infrared from traditional glow bar light sources. Besides, the apparatus to select such a narrow band of wavelengths is quite costly and complex. The use of a laser solves these problems simultaneously. Although a variety of lasers are available to detect a variety of gases (such as carbon monoxide or methane) whose early detection would be desirable, this paper deals exclusively with the use of lasers for methane detection. ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHANE IN AIR The absorption spectrum of pure methane is very well known.2-4 There are four fundamental vibrations, all occurring in the infrared of which only two absorb strongly. They occur at 3.3 µ and 7.7 µ. The absorption spectrum is quite complicated due to the fact that the methane molecule can rotate in a variety of rotational quantum states. These rotational states are furthermore split by anharmonic forces such as the Coriolis force.4 When methane is present in air at atmospheric pressure, much of the very fine structure due to the anharmonic force is washed out since the pressure broadening is of the same magnitude as the splitting due to anharmonicity. For most of the spectrum at 3.3 µ, the rotational lines are typically separated by 0.01µ while the individual linewidth is 0.0001 µ. It is thus very important that the laser emit at a wavelength that coincides with one of these rotational lines. Despite the wealth of information available on phase equilibria of oxide systems there remainmany gaps and inconsistencies in our knowledge base. From an industry perspective there is anongoing need to adequately describe the phase chemistry of slag systems in order to optimizeprocess performance and improve productivity. Since this chemical behaviour cannot be predictedfrom first principles it follows there is also an ongoing need for accurate experimental data. The advances made in recent years in the capabilities of sophisticated analytical and measurement equipment have made it possible to develop new experimental techniques for the direct determination of phase equilibria in low order and complex multi-component slag systems. In addition the development of powerful computer modelling tools makes it possible to provide more comprehensive descriptions of the phase chemistry, to present the information in a range of perspectives, and to critically analyse the various types of related thermodynamic and structural information available. This review provides an overview of the types of information that can be used to determine phase equilibria in slags systems, analyses the influence of uncertainty and the relative importance of these types of data, and describes the advantages and limitations of the various experimental techniques that can be employed to obtain this information. Examples of recent studies are provided that demonstrate how an integrated approach to the determination of phase equilibria in complex systems, involving the use of targeted experimental studies and systematic thermodynamic model development, can lead to a better utilization of our current research capabilities and resources and more accurate descriptions of these systems.
