This Bureau of Mines report describes floor heave ground control problems that have been encountered in a new underground coal mine in West Virginia. Previous experience in the coal seam, the results of physical property investigations, and in situ rock stress determinations are discussed. The apparent cause of the ground control problems is the existence of a high, biaxial, horizontal stress field coupled with a floor member that has time-dependent deformation characteristics, A theoretical analysis of the failure process is developed. The analysis is assisted by finite element techniques. Mine design recommendations based on this analysis are presented.

Valley Camp No. 3 mine was the scene of an experimental shortwall introduced in 1973 in an attempt to improve the recovery from the Pittsburgh coalbed in the Ohio Valley area where adverse ground conditions have imposed partial extraction methods with only 40 to 55 percent recovery of the valuable resource. The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Valley Camp Coal Co., monitored ground pressures and caving in the shortwall section in an effort to determine whether the roof strata, notably the limestone main roof, will cave to the extent that roof pressures at the face are relieved and whether the powered roof supports can sustain the roof load. The Bureau's efforts included mapping of clay veins, instrumentation of chain pillars and shortwall panels with encapsulated pressure cells, recording hydraulic pressures in the legs of the shortwall chocks, and core drilling underground and from the :surface. The experimental shortwall was a qualified success. Recovery increased 5.4 percent compared with partial extraction. Pressures in chain pillars and the abutment zone were not excessive. Hydraulic pressures in the chock legs did not approach the yielding pressure. Apparently, the limestone strata caved and the roof pressure at the face was relieved.

This publication describes mining and milling methods and costs at the Madison mine of National Lead Co., St. Louis Smelting & Refining Division, in the Fredericktown district of southeast Missouri and is one of a series prepared by the Federal Bureau of Mines on methods, practices, and costs of mining and milling throughout the United States. The are bodies of the Madison mine are known for the complexity and diversity of their are minerals. Sulfides of copper, nickel, and cobalt occur in commercial quantities with lead sulfide, which is the most valuable metallic mineral in are bodies of the Bonne Terre formation in southeast Missouri. Several attempts were made by various operators to mine the complex ores and separate the sulfide minerals before 1927 when National Lead Co. became interested in the Fredericktown district. Operating then as the St. Louis Smelting & Refining Co., the company began mining and milling ores from the Madison mine in 1944 and has operated continuously since then. A recently built refinery produces copper, nickel, and cobalt metal from a concentrate containing iron sulphides and small quantities of copper, nickel, and cobalt sulphides.

Charleston was among one of the first American cities to construct separate sanitary and storm water drainage infrastructure. This concept has roots dating back to the city?s founding and is a credit to the foresight of its founding fathers who understood the basic health differences between sanitary and storm water.

This Bureau of Mines report evaluates the performance of commercially available portable instrumentation for the detection of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oxygen, and methane at conditions simulating an industrial work atmosphere. Portable instrumentation included in the study was gas-detection tubes (length-of-stain and color intensity), catalytic detector, liquid absorption detectors, paramagnetic oxygen detector, galvanic detector, and pelement or hot-wire methane detectors. Evaluation of the instruments was in atmospheres with 50 and 80 percent relative humidities at 75° F and containing test gas concentrations of 0.1, 0.25, 0.50, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 times the thresh-old limit value. Correlation of the results from the portable gao analyzer with measurement from the standard instruments was made by calculating and plotting an estimated line of regression, prediction, and confidence limits and the correlation coefficient for each detector system. Relative humidity in the 50-to 80-percent range did not appear to contribute to instrumental uncertainties in either performance or operation. Considerable deviation in detection precision between the portable gas-detection systems and the standard systems was established, especially at the lower gas concentration levels. The main difference or inconsistency in toxic gas concentrations determined with length-of-stain tubes resulted from the observer's interpretation of the results rather than difference in the tubes themselves.

Within these jurisdictions, primary attention is given to requirements that must be met in each country for acquisition of rights to permit development of mineral resources. Coverage includes : First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

[Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCR's) have been widely utilised as fire-resistant dielectric coolants; in electrical equipment used in mining applicants, including transformers, capacitors, electric motors, and electromagnets. In addition, PCB's have been used in hydraulic fluids and heat-transfer fluids and are present in many oil-filled transformers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently banned the manufacture of PCB's and equipment using PCB's, and imposed strict requirements on the continued use and disposal of existing PCB equipment. This manual discusses the EPA requirements, suggests ways to decrease the risks resulting from continued use of PCR equipment, and surveys the non-PCB equipment that is available as replacements for the PCB electrical equipment presently used in mines.]

Geologic investigation of a mineralized zone in eastern Alabama indicates that large quantities of talc and soapstone are scattered over a wide area close to the surface. Laboratory experiments show that this material may be upgraded to a high-quality talc. A market survey indicates that the talc deposits may be of current and long-range interest. The anthophyllite asbestos which is associated with the talc does not appear to occur in sufficient quantities to be considered as a primary commercial source.

Implementation of the joint Federal-State control program established in 1955 to cope with the mine water problem in the Pennsylvania anthracite region is described in this report. The increasing severity of the water problem in the anthracite mines has necessitated major adjustments as this continuing program has progressed. Since 1941 the Federal Government has recognized the mine water problem as an important factor in the worsening economic condition of the anthracite region by initiating scientific and technologic investigations and establishing the Anthracite Flood-Prevention Section in the Bureau of Mines in 1948. On the basis of comprehensive investigations and studies, the results of which were published in numerous reports and bulletins, the Anthracite Mine Drainage Commission of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania formulated a plan that served as a background for legislative action in 1955, resulting in Public Law 162, 84th Congress (Act of July 15, 1955 (69 Stat. 352; 30 U.S.C. 571-576)), for the Federal Government, and Act No. 82 of the General Assembly, July 7, 1955, for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The report covers 29 mine flood control projects approved and executed in implementing the aforementioned legislative acts. Essential engineering and cost details for each project are given, together with an evaluation of the effect that the installed facilities have on alleviating the mine water problem as it concerns individual mines and the anthracite industry as a whole.

Laboratory-scale tests were undertaken to examine several electrolytes for possible use in separating nickel and cobalt from products being prepared at Nicaro, Cuba. The most extensive work was done with nickel sulfate-ammonium fluoride, ammonium fluoride, ammonium sulfate, and nickel sulfate-boric acid electrolytes. All four electrolytes exhibited some selectivity for dissolving nickel carbonate from Nicaro basic carbonate used for regeneration. The nickel sulfate-ammonium fluoride electrolyte exhibited less selectivity for dissolving nickel carbonate from Nicaro basic carbonate than it did from synthetic mixtures. Ammonium fluoride leaching experiments showed that a low concentration and high temperature gave a good nickel extraction with C. P. reagents; however, this was not confirmed in tests using Nicaro basic carbonate. Electrolytic tests employing ammonium fluoride leach liquors gave no further separation, since approximately 90 percent of the cobalt was deposited at the cathode with the nickel.

Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.

When the 2008 Olympic Games begin in Beijing, China is September it will not only mark the end of the journey for the Olympic torch and the thou-sands of participating athletes, but the games will also mark the culmination of a massive amount of construction in the city. On display for the world to see will be 31 new and refurbished venues including the 91,000-seat National Stadium called the ?Bird?s Nest? and the aquatics center, called the Water Cube. What will not be featured as prominently on the television cameras broadcasting the games around the world will be the network of tunnels built beneath the city. But that infrastructure of rail lines will be of critical importance to the games. While preparing to host the world, China added a subway tunnel that will include four stops in the Olympic Park. The 4.4-km (2.7-mile) subway line that runs through the complex of stadiums, gymnasiums and parks began trial operations in June. Prior to the opening of that line, Beijing's No. 5 subway line, which runs through the heart of the city from north to south, opened in October. The Bureau of Mines conducted experiments on coal dust explosion suppression. The investigation took place on a beltway in the double-entry of the Bureau's Experimental Mine. Using conditions that simulate those in a working mine, the investigation showed that a coal dust explosion can be readily initiated in a conveyor belt entry. Also, the explosion can spread into adjacent entries through opened crosscuts (stopping destroyed by explosion) to propagate for long distances even though the adjacent entries are rock dusted in compliance with regulations. Passive water barriers (water-filled tubs) were found to be effective in suppressing explosions on a beltway; however, barrier efficiency was reduced by opened crosscuts. The study indicated that the beltway barrier should be the distributed type consisting of continuous rows of water-filled tubs covering long distances along the entry. A plan is outlined for the installation of a water barrier system in a working coal mine for the protection of a beltway.

A new method of constructing retaining walls, in-situ, prior to excavation has been developed. This "Vertical Earth Reinforcement Technique" VERT, has been demonstrated at a full scale test wall at the National Geotechnical Experimentation Site at Texas A&M University. This 10 meter high wall, was constructed of elements of soil mixing in an array that forced composite behavior between the soil mixed elements and the in-situ soils. Inclinometers and extensometers were used to verify the performance of the wall. The construction and results of the testing are presented.

The Sandvik DE710 diamond core drill has become one of the most popular exploration drills available. It is operated on exploration and mining projects in locations around the world. The engine complies with the Tier 3 emissions standards that are being introduced in many countries. The hydraulic system design for the Sandvik DE710 is based on the company?s philosophy of selecting the best available products to suit the application. The main hydraulic pumps and motors are the variable displacement design. This allows for greater fl exibility and precise control of critical drilling functions. The cooling system has also been designed for operation in ambient temperatures up to 50° C (122° F) to cope with varying global operational demands.

Using bench-and pilot-scale coking facilities, the Bureau of Mines produced experimental coke from blends of char with Sunnyside coal (high-volatile A bituminous) from Carbon County, Utah. At bench scale, additions of char made from lignite improved resultant cokes when concentrations of up to 60 pct were used in the blends. At pilot scale (500-pound movable-wall oven), four chars made by entrained-bed carbonization techniques from the parent Sunnyside coal and from a North Dakota lignite were used in two-component blends with the Sunnsyide coal. Chars from Sunnyside coal had volatile matter contents of 5.8, 9.8, and 16.0 pct, moisture-free basis; the char from the lignite had 16.6 pct. In twenty-five 500-pound tests, improvement in coke quality was observed from all blends at char concentrations to 17.5 pct. The best coke, produced from a concentration of 12.5 to 15 pct of S.8-pct volatile char, exhibited physical properties approaching those of an industrial coke produced from Sunnyside coal blended with three higher rank blending coals. Studies were also made of the effects on coke quality of char source, of particle size, of comparative use of char and of a blending coal, and of prolonged coal storage.

"This report presents the results of a laboratory study undertaken to evaluate ground granulated blast-furnace slag from Algoma Steel Corporation, as a replacement for Portland cement in cemented mine backfill. The evaluation was based on the results of compressive strength tests performed on cylinders cast from mixtures made with a granulated blast-furnace slag and tailings from four different mines in the Sudbury basin. Various percent¬ages of slags and various binder to tailings ratios were used.Tests results show that, in terms of compressive strength, the slag performs as well or better than Portland cement as the binding agent in cemented mine backfill. Lime was found to be a poten¬tially good activator for ground granulated slag in mine backfill applications.A field test was conducted at one of the mines, consisting of placing a mixture of 95.5% ground granulated slag and 0.5% lime into a stope, and inspecting the floor slab as it hardened. The slag performed as expected, considering the backfill mixture proportions used and the preparation of the test site."

On December 27, 1961, a fire and explosion destroyed the blasting agent mixing plant and an attached storage barn of the Whitaker-Atlas Supply Co., near Norton, Wise County, Va. Five residences, an office building, four trucks, and three automobiles were completely destroyed; a house trailer and several other trucks and automobiles were severely damaged; and other property damage, including much window breakage, occurred up to 3 miles or more airline distance away. Through the quick action of the fire marshal of the Norton Fire Department, Norton, Va., there were no fatalities and only five persons required hospitalization. This incident is of particular interest because of the widespread practice of mixing fuel oil (FO) with ammonium nitrate (AN) to prepare low-cost blasting agents, in many cases under conditions and circumstances not very different from those presented here. A representative of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Laboratory, Pittsburgh, Pa., and field representatives of the Bureau's Health and Safety Activities conducted the investigation. Information in this report was obtained from representatives of the Whitaker-Atlas Supply Co., the Norton fire marshal, and others who were on the scene either shortly before or after the incident occurred. Representatives of the Manufacturing Chemists' Association, the Institute of Makers of Explosives, and individual ammonium nitrate producers participated in the inquiries and investigations.

In stopes of the 2000- and 2150-ft. levels in the North mine section of North Broken Hill Limited, whence a substantial proportion of the company's production is being drawn, and especially in stopes which involve the portion known as the Northern orebody, occurs it light-coloured friable porous material which represents average grade ore from which the lead and zinc minerals, and certain gangue constituents, have been largely or wholly removed by leaching. The 2000- and 2150-ft. levels lie, respectively, 1550 and 1700 ft. below extreme base of the pre-mine oxidized zone. Composition of the cellular product shows it to be supergene. "INTRODUCTION A previous paper by H. H. Storch 4 described. three processes for the production of potassium sulphate from polyhalite (K2S01.MgSO1.2CaS04.2H2o), Since these processes depended upon calcination of polyhalite followed by leaching with water at 100°C., the fundamental reactions occurring in these steps were discussed in detail. This paper, which describes processes producing syngenite (K2S04.CaSO4.H2O) and potassium sulphate and gives data concerning the production of by-product magnesia, presents the results of work performed at the Non metallic Minerals Experiment Station of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, maintained at New Brunswick, N. J., in cooperation with Rutgers University.A study of the solubility relationships of the system 5 Ca++ -Mg++ -K+-SO4 = H20 at 25ºC. shows that syngenite is stable in the presence of a concentrated MgSO4 solution, the K2SO : equilibrium concentration being comparatively low (2.6 per cent), The processes described below, which involve the conversion of calcined polyhalite to syngenite, are based on the 25°C. equilibria. It has further been found that syngenite can be decomposed by water at 100ºC, yielding a 9 to 10 per cent K250 solution, the solid phase being potassium calcium pentasulphate (K2SO, 3CaSO.H2O, hereafter referred to as ""pentasulphate""). This latter compound is unstable in the presence of water at 25°C., its decomposition resulting in a solution containing about 3 per cent of K2SO4 and a solid phase consisting of gypsum. This behaviour of syngenite with water at 100°C. and of pentasulphate with water at 25ºC. constitutes the basis of processes for the production of K2SO4 by way of the conversion of calcined polyhalite to syngenite,Syngenite is a product which may be used as a fertilizer per se. As produced in the process to be described, it contains about 50 per cent of K2SO1, and will readily give up its potash content on treatment with water, although the limiting concentration at ordinary temperatures is approximately 3 per cent. This definite but limited solubility should make this product more desirable as a fertilizer then the more concentrated forms of potash salts which have higher solubilities and hence involve the danger or plant injury due to a high local concentration of potash."
