"Those who submit competing proposals for projects seek to present senior management with complete and fully supported material that will not fail under questioning. Hopefully, misleading notions and omissions will have been minimized and there will have been testing of the assumptions regarding the economic, social and political environments. A capital project evaluation team can do management and itself a service by including a sound approach to the impact of inflation (and its twin problem, interest) on a project and a great disservice with an inappropriate approach to inflation.InflationHandled deftly, inflation can alter a project evaluation to show almost any result the handler desires. It must be a constant source of frustration for design people and cost estimators to spend weeks perfecting the technical aspects of a project in order to minimize costs, only to have all of their efforts set awash in a sea of financial and economic assumptions that submerge all of the detail. In all of this, inflation is perhaps the largest offender, with inflation criteria often being brought to bear at the last minute, almost as an afterthought. Perhaps this tardiness reflects the difficulty of the subject and the belief that senior management will take its own approach to the problems of inflation. Such a belief is unfair to senior management, for it is entitled to not being misled by omission. It is entitled to the full use of the skills of the evaluating team, including respectable assumptions of the impact of inflation.Working in a consulting context, one has the opportunity to participate in the evaluation of a large number of projects. Reflecting the observation of a wide range of views regarding the subject of inflation, this paper will-address the impact of five different approaches to inflation on the evaluation of a single Canadian mining project."

This study analyses the results of a pilot trial of a newly developed armed-chained stone-cutting machine. The machine was developed in Turkey and trialed at the Kaklik/Kocaba travertine quarries in the Denizli District. An armed-chained cutting machine is an alternative to the diamond wire cutting method more frequently used in the production of natural stone quarry blocks, and increases production efficiency and quality. Since there is no need to collapse the blocks using the armed-chained cutting production process, there is no risk of the block developing cracks. This results in a considerable increase in the efficiency of natural stone block production. The armed-chained cutting machine is easier both to assemble and run when compared to other block cutting methods. This process resulted in the production of a larger number of blocks at a lower cost within the same time frame, particularly in travertine quarries and in all other natural stone quarries. The block efficiency in travertine quarries was calculated as 65?80%using the armed-chained cutting machine, compared with 7?14% using the normal diamond wire cutting method.

A study of the application of mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation has been carried out, focusing on efficiently activating mine tailings, reducing alkali consumption, decreasing curing time and improving compressive strength. Firstly, the effect of temperature on the alkali activation of mine tailings was studied. Secondly, the impact of additives, i.e., calcium hydroxide and aluminum oxide, on the compressive strength of samples was investigated. Thirdly, the impact of forming pressure on sample strength was studied. Test results showed that unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of 40 MPa was achieved with the geopolymerization products through optimization. Finally, to elucidate the geopolymerization mechanism of mine tailings, microscopic and spectroscopic techniques including SEM/EDX, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy were used to investigate the microstructure and the elemental and phase composition of the geopolymerization products. The findings of the present work provide a practical method for applying mine tailings as precast construction materials through alkali activation.

Greensand, which is widely distributed in the Eastern United States, was produced in 1976 only by the Inversand Co., a subsidiary of Hungerford & Terry Inc., near Clayton, N. J. Production and sales information is withheld by the Bureau of Mines. Raw greensand produced by the company was sold for agricultural use as a soil conditioner. Processed greensand was sold for use as a filter medium for the removal of manganese, iron, sulfide, and other elements from water.

Radioisotopes of selenium (se78) and tellurium (Te123) were successfully employed by the Bureau of Mines as tracers in metallurgical research directed to developing improved methods for volatilizing these elements from low-tenor raw materials. Prior research, guided and controlled by conventional analytical methods, was seriously hampered by inconsistent selenium and tellurium analyses, by the slowness of the conventional chemical methods, and by the poor accountability of these volatile elements in test products. Methods were devised and evaluated for admixing the radioactive tracer with typical raw materials and then following the deportment of the selenium and tellurium by radiometric methods with occasional chemical analysis checks. These techniques were found unusually effective in (1) quantifying the completeness and the rate of volatilization of selenium and tellurium while heating the raw materials at different rates to different temperatures and (2) accurately tracing and quantifying the distribution of minute amounts of these volatile elements in the several products made by high-temperature treatment and in the several units comprising the experimental equipment.

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

A brief review is given of the history of the Colliery to date together with the reasons for the development of an additional seam.Investigations into the quality of the coal ami its suitability for the production of metallurgical coke and determination of the economic mining limits and coal reserves are discussed. The commencement of mining operations and the inter-seamarrangements necessary for the disposal of coal won are described with the stages in the opening out of the seam itself and the reasons for the installation of a 48-in. trunk conveyor belt. Choke and manning of face equipment are considered and also the work of secondary development and pillar extraction.It is concluded that with modern face equipment and conveyor belt lines, concentrated mining followed by immediate extraction of pillars is practicable and is giving excellent results at Burwood Colliery.INTRODUCTIONBurwood Colliery, the total holding of which now comprises some 3,140 acres of land and 1,450 acres of sea leases, has mined the Borehole Seam since 1883. The early work took place from Nos. 1 and 2 shafts at Glenrock Lagoon and later on at Nos. 3 and 4 shafts at Whitebridge to which the centre of operations shifted in 1893, shaft sinking at this latter area having commenced in 1888.As all the early operations were confined to the Borehole Seam, reserves of coal on this horizon had been considerably reduced by the mid 1930's, so a cross measure drift was driven to the Victoria Tunnel Seam which is about 300 ft. above the Borehole Seam, and fully mechanized coal winning commenced from the second seam in 1938. This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed the authors to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flowsheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit.

Pipelines for transporting high concentration slurries are often designed using methods applicable to homogeneous non-Newtonian laminar flow. Many industrial slurries though comprise coarse particles in a non-Newtonian carrier fluid, and existing experimental evidence from tests with such slurries demonstrates that they are not homogeneous. Under laminar shear conditions the coarse particles settle, even in statically stable carrier fluids. To understand this better, the Institute of Materials Science and Technology (IMST) at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) is conducting ongoing research into the flow of these high concentration non-Newtonian settling slurries. Since pressure gradient and flow rate measurements alone are insufficient to adequately model the flows, an electrical resistance tomography (ERT) instrument developed by the University of Cape Town (UCT)was incorporated into the pipe test loop to determine pipe cross-section concentration and velocity profiles. The software developed to do this is modular and allows different image reconstruction and cross-correlation algorithms to be implemented and tested without significantly changing the rest of the application. At a total frame capture rate of 566 frames/sec a 2.67 GHz Intel Celeron processor with 500 MB of RAM is fast enough to calculate and display velocity profiles in ?real-time? at an update rate of one profile every two seconds. Examples of experimental concentration and velocity profiles obtained using the system are shown and some proposed improvements/extensions to the system are listed.

Groundwater and associated pore pressure represent elements that can have a negative impact on surface mining and slope stability. Groundwater flow and deformation within a slope influence each other. An increase in pore pressure will result in a decrease of effective stress; and conversely, if the pore pressure decreases, the effective stress increases. Slope analysis and slope design calculations require good information on pore pressure distribution around an open pit excavation. Until recently very little pore pressure data were available and assumptions had to be used. Location and design of measuring points depend on geological and structural setting, geotechnical domains and practicality. Good planning and the use of sensitive point piezometers to measure in situ pore pressures means that real-time data can be collected and used for the construction of flow nets, the determination of pore pressure distribution around an open pit mine, the validation of the dewatering/depressurization requirements, the calculation of the efficiency of the dewatering system and finally the use of pore pressure data in slope stability analysis. The recommended layout for a monitoring system, types and design of piezometers, data collection and use of the pore pressure data are presented.

"The toxicity reduction of emissions from two diesel engines by the emulsification of water into fuel oil was investigated to determine the applicability of such systems to underground mining machinery. . The engines studied were: 1) the Deut; F6L7J4, four-stroke, air-cooled, 6-cylinder, V-configuration, indirect-injection (IDl) engine, and 2) the Detroit Deisel Allison Division 8V7JN, two-stroke, water-cooled, 8-cylinder, V-configuration, direct-injection (Dl) engine.The application of emulsified fuel treatment to the two-stroke engine did not prove to be practicable. In the case of the Deutz engine, however, substantial benefit resulted. For a modest J5 per cent water content in the fuel and an injection timing of24° BTDC, approximate reductions of40 per cent in the concentrations of both particulate matter and nitric oxide (NO) were produced. These reductions were accompanied by insignificant changes in other toxic constituents. The net result was an approximate 30 per cent reduction in the over-all exhaust toxicity for typical LHD operation as assessed by the Health Effects Index criterion. This toxicity reduction represents a significant advance from the points of view of an improved underground environment and/or reduced ventilation costs."

About half a million sucker-rod pumps are installed in oil wells in the U. S. alone. In Venezuela, too, the system is widely used; some 5,000, or 90 percent, of Cia. Shell de Venezuela's wells produce a total of 400,000 BOPD by this method. Most of the crude pumped is viscous, gassy and contains relatively small amounts of free water. API gravities vary from 90 to 16O; dead oil viscosities vary from 10 to 10,000 cp at the pump; and GOR's range from 100 to 2,000 cu ft/bbl. Pumps are set at depths ranging from a few hundred to 6,000 ft; the average setting depth is about 2,500 ft. From the literature, it appears that although recent years have seen significant progress toward understanding the rod pumping system as a whole, relatively little attention has been paid to those key items, the sucker-rod pump and the subsurface gas separator or gas anchor. Perhaps because of proration in the U. S., pump manufacturers have seemingly concerned themselves more with the durability of their product, achieved mainly through robust design and metallurgical know-how, than with its working efficiency. In 1963, CSV commenced a major rehabilitation and expansion of its heavy oil fields along the Bolivar Coast. The advent of the more efficient gravel-packed completion and of large-scale thermal recovery (mainly steam soak) operations resulted in well potentials *Now with B. I. P. M., The Hague, The Netherlands. greater than pump capacities. Hence, an urgent need arose to improve over-all pump efficiencies and to attack those special problems related to the production of both the extremely viscous and the hot, steam-laden crudes that formed an increasing proportion of the total stream. There followed a detailed investigation and testing program, carried out in close cooperation with a major pump manufacturer. This culminated in the introduction to the oil industry of a new line of sucker-rod pumps. Early Investigations and Experiments Field Tests Extensive field tests were carried out in three primary Bolivar Coast wells with an in-situ dead oil viscosity ranging from 400 to 6,000 cp. In these installations provision was made to (1) monitor bottom-hole pressures below, in and above the pump by means of pressure transducers, and record casing- and tubing-head pressures continuously; (2) measure accurately the annulus gas, as well as measure the tubing gas and liquid production from the well; (3) take special PVT samples of the well fluid; (4) measure power consumption of the prime mover; and (5) measure the rod loads at the polished rod. A typical test installation is illustrated in Fig. 1. It was established from the pressure transducers that with viscous oils, there is considerable flow resistance across the pump and gas anchor assembly. The fundamental principles by which bismuth may be removed from lead by pyrometallurgical processes are enumerated. Qualitative discussion of the phase diagrams concerned is followed by presentation of quantitative diagrams. Brief mention is made of the practical aspects. Data presented show how chemical lead (<0.005 pct Bi) may be produced by the Jollivet, Dittmer, and Kroll-Betterton processes. BISMUTH is an element whose properties are very similar to those of lead, and its minerals are associated to a greater or lesser extent with nearly all the major lead ore deposits of the world. In consequence, the lead produced contains bismuth unless a special debismuthizing process is practiced. There does not appear to be any published comprehensive review of the effect of bismuth as an impurity on the properties of lead, and there is some uncertainty as to the beneficial or detrimental effects of small amounts of bismuth in lead used for particular applications. Standard specifications of most countries stipulate a maximum bismuth content of 0.005 pct for chemical lead. With one exception, this specification is met only by lead producers whose ores are relatively bismuth-free, or whose refineries are electrolytic. In lead for certain applications a higher bismuth content is preferred by some fabricators.&apos; In contrast to the refining for silver, copper, and antimony, the refining for bismuth does not usually result in a large overalil economic gain from the sale of byproduct. Thus, debismuthizing is customarily practiced only if market conditions demand a lead with a bismuth content lower than that produced by classical refining; i.e., softening, desilverizing, and zinc refining. Until this century, debismuthizing was carried out only a:; an incidental result of desilverizing, as later described. This century has seen the development of the Betts electrolytic process—the only successful one of many electrolytic processes proposed and patented —and a number of precipitation processes based on the pioneering work of Kroll,&apos; although only one of these, the Kroll-Better ton process,&apos; is in wide commercial use today. It is proposed in this paper to deal only with the pyrometallurgical processes, excluding those based on aqueous electrolysis. Historical Background Prior to 1833 silver (and incidentally bismuth) could not be removed from lead. To recover silver from rich bullion, the only course available to lead refineries was to cupel the bullion, forming a slag of litharge. The first slag tappings or skimmings, on reduction, yielded soft lead of very low silver and bismuth contents. Intermediate skimmings yielded a lead of somewhat higher silver and bismuth contents, which could if desired be recupelled. The last skimmings yielded a litharge very high in bismuth, which could by successive oxidation and reduction cycles be separated into high purity bismuth, and lead returns. This oxidation reduction process, with modern operating techniques, can still be used today to produce a portion of a lead refinery&apos;s output of very low bismuth content, as discussed later. In 1833 Pattinsone discovered that lead bullion could be purified of silver and bismuth by fractional crystallization, the primary lead crystals formed by partial freezing being purer than the melt. Various types of contemporary Deep Mixing Method (DMM) techniques have been used in the United States since 1986. Such techniques owe their origins to Japanese and Scandinavian developments, which began almost three decades ago. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation have created a very active and rapidly expanding market demand in the United States especially since the early 1990s, and there is a clear need for a new and fundamental review of the surprisingly large number of DMM techniques that are being used domestically, or are available in other parts of the world. Following a summary tracing the historical development of DMM, and a generic classification of applications, the paper provides a review of each of the many different proprietary methods, which the authors have identified during preparation of an international survey funded by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). Data are also provided on commercial aspects of the various DMM techniques worldwide.

ABSTRACTMechanised cut and fill stoping in the Racecourse orebodies between II and 9 levels was started in 1964.Five stopes are in progress over the two level interval, extracting the full strike length (600-2,000 ft) of each orebody without transverse pillars.Each stope is served by a central 10 ft by 12 ft service intake ventilation raise and an 8 ft by 8 ft return air raise at each end of the stope. Each stope is divided into two sections for drilling. firing. mucking, and fillingto maintain steady production. All equipment is kept in the stope for one level lift stoping. Gardner-Denver 2 boom jumbos are used for uphole drilling and Wagner ST 5 Scooptrams for loading and transport to ore passes located in the footwall of the orebody. A Wagner PTIO is used for materials handling and scaling of the stope backs.Mill tailings, after one stage of cycloning are used to fill the stope, one section at a time. About 80 per cent of the water is removed by decantation while the remainder percolates through hessian-covered pipes and boxes.The ore is passed to 11 level where it is hauled by the 3 ft 6 in. gauge train to the tipple at the shaft area. The ore is crushed underground before hoisting to the surface.A performance of about 100 ton/manshift is achieved by the drilling, blasting, and mucking crews in the stopes.
