Plant for the production of sulphuric acid from pyrites flotation concentrates was commissioned at Cockle Creek during 1956, to meet increasing demands for commercial acid and superphosphate. Pyrite was chosen as raw material because of the uncertain supplyposition of imported brimstone and the desirability of utilising domestic sulphur.Desulphurisation of the pyrite is performed by two 40-ton per day roasters of the Turbulent Layer type operated under licence from the Badische Analin and Soda Fabrik (B.A.S.F.) organisation. These units are the first of their kind commissioned in the southernhemisphere. Pyrite is fed to the roasters in the as-received un-dried condition. Waste heat steam production is coupled with electricity generation within the plant. Sulphur dioxide is produced at comparatively high strengths and cleaned by conventional cyclone and hot electro-filter equipment.The acid unit has a capacity of 100 mono tons of sulphuric acid per day and includes cooling and wash towers, mist precipitators, a single stage drying tower, 4-pass oxidation section and absorption system.INTRODUCTIONSulphuric acid has been manufactured at Cockle Creek Works since 1913, when the first chamber nitration plant was commissioned. The raw material was brimstone roasted in Herreschoff furnaces. Since that time three additional chamber units have been constructed and have produced acid from brimstone, zinc concentrates, pyrites and -spent oxide, according to changing economic and supply factors.Three chamber units are still in operation. Contact processes have become increasingly important since the first Schroder-Grillo unit was commissioned in 1923. Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. The principles of shear-driven aggregation of particulate matter suspended in fluids, a common industrial method of concentration and separation, were applied to a convecting magma to estimate the time required to sparge or strip the PGE and Cr content and concentrate it into the boundary layers. It was calculated that an ore-grade (e.g. 6 ppm PGE) boundary layer about 1 m thick would require 100 000 years at most to form from a body of magma 500 m deep with a PGE content of 20 ppb. Since concentration would be most vigorous when the magma was warmest, at least half of this concentration would take place in the first 10 000 years. The effect of dispersive pressure in the boundary layer would generate a concentration high of refractories just below the top of each boundary layer and another just above the bottom. If the magma was a double-diffusive system, it might evolve by the downward cascade of enriched boundary-layer material into the hotter, lower magma layers, where depending on saturation levels chromites would equilibrate and sulphides undergo partial or total resorption, enriching PGE levels in any remaining sulphides. The nature of fracture and factors that control the extent of fracture in the tumble-drum and drop-tower tests have been identified. The product-size distribution, on which the standard strength indices for these tests are based, and the breakage rate constants depend on a number of factors other than the strength of the lumps. The standard indices and rate constants are meaningful only in a comparative context and for events whose loading mechanism is similar. The results of experiments on three Australian ores, from Yandi, Koolan and Mount Whaleback, are used in combination with fracture mechanics theory to explain why different tumble-drum standards have been found to be fully consistent. "Abstract - Enigmatic hydrothermal vein/breccia/replacement Cu-Au deposits with magnetite and/or hematite are well-represented in Australian 1850 Ma to 1500 Ma terrains and associated with different-aged synorogenic intrusions in the Tennant Creek Block (ca. 1850 Ma); the Gawler-Curnamona region (1640 Ma to 1590 Ma); and the Cloncurry district (Mount Isa Eastern Fold Belt, 1540 Ma to 1500 Ma with a possible earlier event at ca. 1600 Ma). No deposits are known to be coeval with various 1780 Ma to 1610 Ma anorogenic intrusions. Deposits are hosted by many different rock-types with varying metamorphic grade including granites and various supracrustal rocks. Depth of mineralization varied from many kilometers in semiductile crust (e.g., Cloncurry deposits) to very shallow (e.g., Olympic Dam). Ore deposition near Cloncurry occurred in brittle-ductile shear zones from geochemically variable and complex, CO2-rich, 300°C to 500°C, high salinity fluids with magmatic stable isotopic signatures. Recently published studies of a giant granitoid-hosted magnetite vein complex at the Lightning Creek prospect (>1000 Mt magnetite) suggest it is a product of internal differentiation and endogenous Fe and Cu-rich hydrous-carbonic fluid phase generation within a quartz monzodiorite-monzogranite intrusion. Coupled with other field relationships, this points to a possible genetic relationship with intermediate (55 to 65 wt% SiO2) members of an alkaline and partly shoshonitic granitoid supersuite which appears to have both mantle and crustal source components from ?Nd evidence. In constrast, main-phase mineralization at Olympic Dam in the Gawler Craton is distinguished by hematite-phyllosilicate alteration and chalcopyrite-bornite-chalcocite zoning, reflecting fluid mixing in a high level (<250°C) system with a probable large component of meteoric water. Early high-temperature parageneses and fluid inclusions imply that the extensive hematitic breccias overprinted an older magnetite system which may have had similarities with those at Lightning Creek and Ernest Henry in the Cloncurry district.Deposits of this family are inherently difficult to find and evaluate as even within a single district, there is no reliable relationship between the location of ore and any specific combination of geophysical characteristics. Diverse alteration assemblages, geochemistry and physical characteristics suggest the deposits reflect the interaction of multi-sourced fluids with different host rocks in a wide range of geological environments. Recent discoveries and research in the Cloncurry district have extended the range of deposit models available and aid the development of a rudimentary classification in which economic and exploration characteristics can be linked to variations in the mechanisms and environments of ore formation."

Paper presented at the IAGOD international symposium on mineralization related to mafic and ultramafic rocks held in Orleans, France, 1-3 September 1993. A lithological and geochemical study revealed significant lateral variation of the interval over 170 km of strike, from about 30 m at the Union Section to 220 m near Brits. The cumulates also become more evolved and leucocratic with distance from the Union Section both towards the NE (Amandelbult) and SE (Impala, Rustenburg and Brits). It is inferred that the persistent heat flux from a putative major feeder zone near the Union Section impaired deposition of felsic cumulates in the vicinity, delaying crystallisation of successive phases in parts of the chamber near the feeder. New influxes were therefore deposited on a footwall of varying thickness and lithology in response to different degrees of crystallisation and accumulation along strike. Mines and plants for sale, downsizing, bankruptcies, consolidation, slab imports, minimill growth displacing traditional integrated steel-making. These are some issues for North American iron ore and integrated steel producers. But the blast furnace still remains the workhorse of the ironmaking industry. And direct reduction and other alternate ironmaking technologies have yet to make any serious inroads in North America. How come? This article addresses the current state of primary ironmaking in the changing North American steel industry, the direct reduction market and new technologies under development that may hold some promise.

It has been suggested that reduction of the iron and manganese phases as far as FeO and MnO is preferred for the complete liberation and selective reduction of the copper, nickel and cobalt oxides in manganese nodules. The oxygen partial pressure/temperature regime suitable for this purpose has been delineated. Free-energy minimisation and thermogravimetric results indicate that the requisite conditions can be achieved if more than 10% of neutral oil is used at temperatures greater than 923 degrees C. Neutral oil content, temperature and roasting time have been optimised to maximise leaching recoveries of Cu, Ni and Co: up to 96% of Cu and Ni and up to 85% of Co can be recovered if 15% of neutral oil is used as a reductant at 973 K for 90 min

It is predicted that vast volumes of affected mine water will be produced by mining activities in the Mpumalanga coalfields of South Africa. The potential environmental impact of this excess water is of great concern in a water-scarce country like South Africa. Research over a period of more than 10 years has shown that this water can be used successfully for the irrigation of a range of crops (Annandale et al., 2002)1. There is, however, continuing concern from the local regulators regarding the long-term impact that large-scale mine water irrigation may have on groundwater quality and quantity. Detailed research has been undertaken over the last three years to supplement the groundwater monitoring programme at five different pilot sites, on both virgin soils (greenfields) and in coalmining spoils. These sites range from sandy soils to very clayey soils. The research has included soil moisture measurements, collection of in situ soil moisture over time, long-term laboratory studies of the leaching and attenuation properties of different soils and the impact of irrigation on acid rock drainage processes, and in depth determination of the hydraulic properties of the subsurface at each of these sites, including falling head tests, pumping tests and point dilution tests. This has been supported by geochemical modelling of these processes to quantify the impacts. The results indicate that many of the soils have considerable attenuation capacities and that in the period of irrigation, a large proportion of the salts have been contained in the upper portions of the unsaturated zones below each irrigation pivot. The volumes and quality of water leaching through to the aquifers have been quantified at each site. From this mixing ratios have been calculated in order to determine the effect of the irrigation water on the underlying aquifers. Keywords: coalmines, irrigation, gypsiferous mine water.

The Bureau of Mines measured respirable dust in coal mines by means of multiple dust samplers worn by persons moving about the mines. The measurements were made primarily to evaluate the effectiveness of certain dust-control techniques; however, for this report, the data have been analyzed to determine the precision of the personal dust-sampling measurements. A total of 68 sets of measurements were available from multiple personal samplers. The measured dust masses were less than 1.0 mg because the sampling times were short. The coefficient of variation calculated from these data was 18.5 pct, compared with coefficients of variation ranging from about 10 to 30 pct, which were calculated from the most precise and extensive data available for fixed-point dust measurements made in coal mines. From this comparison, it is concluded that dust samplers worn by personnel are as precise as fixed-point samplers in measuring respirabe coal dust; the wearing of the samplers by someone moving about a mine does not contribute significantly to the variation in measurements made with these instruments.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a monitoring field study to optimize the rib control plan in a room-and-pillar coal mine. The study mine is located in the Central Appalachia coal basin. Two monitoring sites were selected at different sections in the study mine. The selected sites have different overburden depths and geologies. The instrumentation plans at study sites include borehole pressure cells installed at various depths in studied pillars, rib and roof extensometers and load cells mounted on number of the rib bolts. The instrumentation results and observed geology for one of the study sites showed great potential for optimizing the rib bolt plan at that section of the mine. Therefore, a rib support optimization study was followed using numerical modeling technique. A calibrated threedimensional model was developed using the instrumentation results of the optimization section. The calibrated model was used to determine the optimum rib support for expected overburden depths and rib heights. Baseline rib bolt patterns were assumed for the optimization study. Additional rib bolts, above and beyond the baseline bolting parameters, were outlined and identified as solutions to contain the rib fracturing identified by the modeling results.

Bench-scale flotation tests were conducted on two western tactite ores to study the recovery of tungsten and zinc minerals. The investigation, which is part of the Bureau of Mines ongoing program to develop methods for beneficiating minerals and metals from domestic low-grade ores, demonstrated the feasibility of producing scheelite, sphalerite, and their bulk concentrates. Sphalerite concentrates containing 51 to 53 pet Zn and less than 0.11 pct W03 were selectively recovered prior to scheelite flotation. Zinc recovery ranged from 85 to 91 pct. Scheelite concentrates containing 17 to 25 pct W03 were then recovered from the ore; tungsten recoveries ranged from 88 to 94 pct. Bulk flotation concentrates containing 84 to 91 pct of the W03 and 87 to 95 pct of the zinc also were prepared. More than 98 pct of the W03 in a bulk concentrate containing 9 pct W03 was extracted by autoclave leaching with a soda solution. The zinc remained in the leached residue.

A study carried out in the iron basin of Lorraine (North-East of France) highlighted the existence of under-oxygenated and noxious gas emissions (carbon dioxide, radon…) in vast built-up areas related to former mine workings. Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes in buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. "SynopsisThe last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was characterized by a belief in volume at any cost, where absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations. This practice fuelled overoptimistic forecasting and planning, which in turn contributed to the economic crisis that followed. The sudden collapse of commodity prices has resulted in mining companies scrambling to find the right balance between optimizing current operations and preserving sufficient flexibility to grasp future opportunities. The runaway costs of building and operating mines have almost squeezed out profit margins, while lower ore grades are inflating production costs. Mining companies therefore need to look at the business with fresh eyes, and develop strategies to attract equity capital as traditional approaches are simply not working anymore. This is especially so in the context of a dwindling investor base that continues to demand greater returns, despite a significantly lower appetite for risk. This paper revisits the micro-economic concepts and demonstrates how pressure from shareholders to prioritize output contributed to spiralling costs and value destruction. Practical techniques are described to model cost curves to optimize a Mineral Resource endowment and address the need to rightbalance a business and preserve agility.IntroductionHenry Lazenby (2014) for the Mining Weekly writes, ‘Bruised and battered, the global mining industry today is undergoing a sea change. "AbstractThe Söderströmstunneln is part of the Citybanan project that is currently under construction in the centre of Stockholm. Main part of the lot Söderströmstunneln is a 300m long immersed tunnel connecting the inner-city islands Södermalm and Riddarholmen. It consists of three tunnel elements that have been immersed in summer 2013. Since the solid bedrock is descending in that area to more then 40m depth, the tunnel elements have been placed and are permanently supported on four pile groups that have been constructed in advance. The common Swedish system of steel core piles has been used to built the pile groups. Drilling and installation of the steel cores piles in free water depth of up to 20m had to be done from a pontoon. The steel core piles are connected with underwater concrete pile caps.IntroductionCitybanan is a new 6km long double track railway tunnel running beneath central Stockholm including two new underground stations Odenplan and Stockholm City. When completed in 2017 commuter trains will have their own tracks through Stockholm, whereas the remaining railway traffic will continue to use the exisiting two tracks (see Fig. 1). This will double the capacity of the railway traffic through Stockholm. The Swedish transport administration Trafikverket is the client for this project. The design and built contract is carried out by the German contractor Züblin Spezialtiefbau GmbH together with their Swedish subsidiary Züblin Scandinavia AS.As the new Citybanan tunnel is in large parts situated below the bedrock level, it can be executed as rocktunnel in the common drill and blast method. Between the two inner-city islands Södermalm and Riddarholmen the tunnel is crossing the Söderström, an arm of the lake Mälaren. Here the bedrock is descending to a deep valley with more then 40m depth. To connect the rock tunnels between these islands a 300m long immersed concrete tunnel supported on pile foundations is currently under construction."

The total world steel production in 1998 amounted to approximately 780 000 000 t. The share of electric steelmaking was in the range of 35 per cent and is expected to increase further to over 40 per cent of the world&apos;s production within the next ten years. As electric steelmaking is primarily based on the use of scrap and as it is progressing more and more into higher steel grades the need for low-residual metallics will become increasingly important. Consequently, the demand for scrap substitute material will increase, reflected in the world wide spate of interest for DRI (Direct Reduced Iron) and HBI (Hot Briquetted Iron). The increased significance of DRI/HBI as a substitute for steel scrap has obviously emanated also from its comparatively lower and more predictable costs per ton and definable chemistry. In 1998 already 37 million tons of DRI/HBI were globally produced.

Tougher physical mining and processing conditions as well as economic circumstances are causing many mining companies to re-evaluate the effectiveness of their mine planning. The recent wave of inexpensive computing power provides the engineer an opportunity to go beyond the simple one-off manual mine design and production schedule. The basis of a good mine plan is a good reserves model. Concepts of mine model development are explored. The only advanced computer methods that have found consistent success in optimising mine planning functions are economic pit limits determination and material scheduling. Three pit &apos;optimisation&apos; methods are examined; the moving cone, the Lerchs-Grossman 3-D graph algorithm, and the new network flow algorithm. A comparison between the methods in terms of total profits generated and computer time involved are made. The results show that both algorithms produced a higher profitability than the simple moving cone, but at much higher execution times. However, the profit increase never exceeded much more than 1 % of the base moving cone case. Finally, a method for the development of long range material production schedules with forward waste planning is presented.

The significance of a massive sandstone unit in the immediate roof to longwall support weighting is well known. If the unit lies in the main roof above the zone of caving, its influence becomes more difficult to calculate using traditional methods. Much of the reserves at Cyprus Plateau&apos;s new, multi-seam Willow Creek Mine are located in the A Seam. The massive Kenilworth Sandstone is typically situated 21.3 m (70 ft) above the A Seam in the main roof and is on average 14.6-m (48-ft) thick, ranging to 29.0-m (95-ft) thick. This paper describes the application of distinct-element modeling to determination of the appropriate yield capacity for supports at Willow Creek. The modeling was determined to be useful for understanding support loading mechanisms and as an aid to engineering judgment in selecting supports.

There are different schools of thoughts about the influence of gas pressure on coal strength. Researchers have reached contradictory results with regard to the effect of confining gas pressure on tensile strength of coal. Accordingly, this paper re-examines the influence of gas pressure on the strength of coal. A specially designed precision drill capable of drilling in a pressurised chamber was used to drill coal samples under both atmospheric and increased gas pressure environment. The drill cuttings were examined for particle size distribution using a laser controlled Malvern Mastersizer S particle size analyser. Petrographic analysis of the sample examined the effect of gas pressures on the maceral structure and the composition of coal. The paper demonstrates that there is a definite variation in the range of particle size distribution with particles obtained from drilling coal samples not subjected to gas pressures, in comparison with those obtained from samples drilled under confined gas pressure. Also observed were the changes in the rate of drilling in soft coal obtained from geologically-disturbed zones compared with other coal samples. Some variation on the maceral compostion of coals were also observed in relation to increased gas pressures and gas type.

The primary responsibility for appraising the status of the country&apos;s mineral supply and for making appropriate recommendations within the executive branch and to the Congress has been pinned in the U.S. Department of the Interior. In fulfilling its role of governmental responsibility for raw-material supplies and their efficient utilization, the Bureau of Mines has analyzed the factors in current and future mineral supplies and demands and has developed 87 statements for specific commodities that assess the national position and problems for these metals, minerals, and mineral fuels. These statements, which constitute the chapters of this volume, are based on lire assumption that nearly till production and consumption of materials in the United States are to be by private individuals and organizations, in accordance with the Nation&apos;s devotion to a private-enterprise economy.

The global tunneling industry has many challenges, both technically and financially, with the latter likely to be a significant feature over the next few years. Many industries have ad-opted standard practices in order to overcome specific technical challenges, from which standard out-comes are anticipated. In tunneling, however, every project is unique so standardized practice is not easy. This requires original thinking and being open to adopting new techniques and technologies as they emerge. Sprayed waterproofing is a hot industry topic and a paper recently presented at the North American Tunneling conference not only discussed this methodology for achieving a dry tunnel but also how it can reduce build costs and construction time. Despite their being relatively few ?universal truths? throughout the tunneling industry, there is one opinion that appears to be shared by most in the sector, ?all tunnels leak.?
