The petrographer engaged in examining the products resulting from the beneficiation of ores and rock minerals is constantly required to develop new means and methods of assaying microscopically the results of such operations. From time to time investigators have published descriptions of apparatus that have aided in solving problems in processes f physical separation. Thus, in 191.9, Coghill and Bonardi 31 published a paper covering the application of the binocular microscope and camera lucida to the microscopic analysis of pulverized ores. Similar work has been published by Schneiderhohn 4/, Schwartz 5/, and Head and his associates6/, 7/, 8/. The present paper goes further and considers application of the polarizing comparison-microscope to problems directly concerned with mineral dressing where it is desirable to compare analogous products, and in addition it suggests new uses in various related fields. This work was conducted under the cooperative agreements of the Southern Experiment Station of the Federal Bureau of Mines and. the University of Alabama.

The Porgera Joint Venture commenced production during September 1990. A small tonnage underground mine extracts high grade gold ore using small scale stopes. Conventional drill and blast methods are used for development and production mining. Ground support is effected with Splitset anchors, grouted rebar bolts and grouted cable bolts. Splitsets and grouted rebar can be installed by mechanised means. Vertical crater retreat, slot and massfire, and modified VCR stoping tech- niques are used at Porgera. Stopes are backfilled with a relatively strong cemented rockf ill. Future stope sequences require recovery of pillars beside and under filled stopes.

CFA piling is a ?blind? construction process that relies heavily on the rig instrumentation to produce sound piles. If the data measured and recorded during construction can be made available to engineers and managers within hours after construction then there are many economic and quality control benefits that can be realised. A state of the art CFA instrumentation and data management process has been developed in the UK. The key components of the instrumentation, GSM data service and the central database are described. Many benefits to the business have been realised and, where possible, these are quantified.

This paper gives an overview of the difficulties associated with determining the strength of hard-rock pillars. Although a number of pillar design tools are available, pillar collapses still occur. Recent examples of large-scale pillar collapses in South Africa suggest that these were caused by weak partings that traversed the pillars. Currently two different methods are used to determine the strength of pillars, namely, empirical equations derived from back analyses of failed and stable cases, and numerical modelling tools using appropriate failure criteria. The paper illustrates that both techniques have their limitations and additional work is required to obtain a better understanding of pillar strength. Empirical methods based on observations of pillar behaviour in a given geotechnical setting are popular and easy to use, but care should be exercised that the results are not inappropriately extrapolated beyond the environment in which they are established. An example is the Hedley and Grant formula (derived for the Canadian uranium mines), which has been used for many years in the South African platinum and chrome mines (albeit with some adaptation of the K-value). Very few collapses have been reported in South Africa for layouts designed using this formula, suggesting that in some cases it might yield estimates of pillar strength that are too conservative. As an alternative, some engineers strongly advocate the use of numerical techniques to determine pillar strength. A close examination unfortunately reveals that these techniques also rely on many assumptions. An area where numerical modelling is invaluable, however, is in determining pillar stresses accurately and for studying specific pillar failure mechanisms, such as the influence of weak partings on pillar strength. In conclusion, it appears that neither empirical techniques nor numerical modelling can be used solely to provide a solid basis for conducting pillar design. It is therefore recommended that both these techniques should be utilized to obtain the best possible insight into a given design problem. Owing to the uncertainties regarding pillar strength and loading stiffness, monitoring in trial mining sections and in established mining areas is also an essential tool to test the stability of pillar layouts in particular geotechnical areas.

Because of complex geological environments, a number of coal reserves occur in inclined or dipping coal seams in certain parts of the world. Longwall top coal caving using split-level a singleentry panel system (SSPS) has been widely used for extracting such coal seams with large thicknesses (greater than 6 m) in China because SSPS can reduce or mitigate problems of coal outbursts, gate road deformations, overturning of shields, downhill sliding of shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC), and so forth, during mining of inclined coal seams. Depth of yield is the range of yield coal from the rib of the pillar to the boundaries where yield ends. It plays a significant role in maintaining the gate pillar stability. This paper presents a study on the stability of an unconventional water-obstruction gate pillar (UWGP) formed by SSPS to prevent water inrush in mining of an inclined thick coal seam in a coal mine in China. As the shape of this pillar is non-cuboidal, nonparallelepiped, a conventional empirical or analytical method is not applicable for studying its stability.

"Platinum-based alloys are being developed with microstructures similar to nickel-based superalloys for potential high-temperature applications in aggressive environments. Since the chemistries of nickel and platinum are similar, Pt-based alloys can be made with gamma prime ~Pt3Al precipitates in a gamma (Pt) matrix. Currently, the Pt-Al-Cr-Ru system is one of the bases for developing Pt-based alloys, where Al allows the formation of thePt3Al precipitate and also gives protection from the alumina scale formed, Cr provides oxidation resistance and stabilization for the L12~Pt3Al phase, and Ru provides solid solution strengthening in the (Pt) matrix. Four Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V and two Pt-Al-Cr-Ru-V-Nb alloys were made, with compositions based on a quaternary alloy, ~Pt82:Al12:Cr4:Ru2, which hadpreviously been identified as having optimum properties. Four of the as-cast alloys had the targeted two-phase structure of ~Pt3Al and (Pt), and two were single-phase ~Pt3Al. Vanadium partitioned more to (Pt) than to~Pt3Al. There was an improvement in hardness compared to the quaternary alloys. The best addition of V was ~15 at.%; higher additions resulted in brittle intermetallic phases of the Pt-V system. The effect of Nbcould not be ascertained because of its high losses."

Pollution from radioactive nuclides, principally Ra226, in liquid waste from uranium mills can be minimized by reusing the waste solution within the mill. Such reuse of waste solution in the Vitro Chemical Co.-type process was investigated in the laboratory. Vitro employs an acid leaching process for dissolution of the uranium, countercurrent decantation for liquid-solid separation and washing, and amine solvent extraction for recovery of the uranium from solution. The simulated reuse of barren raffinate in the mill circuit was carried through two separate laboratory campaigns of 29 and 31 cycles. Conventional chloride stripping of the amine was employed in the first campaign, whereas nitrate stripping was used in the second campaign. Dissolution of uranium from the are in the acid leaching circuit averaged 96 percent. Washing efficiencies of 98 to 99 percent were attained by using 4 volume tons of combined raffinate and makeup water per ton of ore. Uranium recovery from the pregnant solution using a 5-percent solution of amine LA-1 in kerosine ranged from 99.3 to 99.9 percent.

A facility to evaluate the fire endurance of mine stoppings was constructed by the Bureau of Mines in the multiple entry section of the Bruceton (PA) Experimental Mine. Stoppings up to 6 by 18 ft can be tested in a manner simulating mine conditions. The stopping is subjected to a 70-min liquid fuel tray fire with an energy output of 75,000 Btu/min. The stopping and adjacent areas are instrumented with thermocouples and heat flux gauges. Data acquisition is by an automatic data logger capable of continuously recording over 100 channels of information. Two 8-in-thick concrete block stoppings and a galvanized steel stopping were tested. A crack developed on the fire side surface of the block stoppings where the flames were most intense. However, the temperatures of the unexposed surfaces of the stoppings never exceeded 800 C and the surfaces were undamaged. The steel stopping retained its structural integrity during the test. The temperature of the unexposed steel surface reached 5000 C, but combustible materials located 1 ft from the surface did not ignite. A 3/4-in-thick coating of construction plaster was applied to the fire side of the previously tested uncoated steel stopping. The quantity of heat energy transmitted across this coated metal stopping was reduced approximately 50%. All stoppings prevented the passage of flame and smoke.

An accurate knowledge of the chemical, mineralogical and physical characteristics of ores and mineral products that are mined, processed and traded is crucial to effective resource utilisation, plant design, process optimisation and finally quality control to ensure that contract specifications are met. However, all too often the responsibility for sampling is entrusted to managers and personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of collecting representative samples for analysis, and everyone seems satisfied as long as some material is collected and returned to the laboratory for analysis. Furthermore, sample stations incorporated into the design of new plants are often the first casualties when cost cutting exercises commence. This needs to change, because there is little point in accurately analysing samples if they are not representative in the first place. The resultant analyses can be next to meaningless and the effort taken to analyse such samples is to a large extent a waste of time and resources.Ultimately, a poor knowledge of the characteristics of ores and mineral products limits the ability of mining companies to optimise the life of ore resources and plant performance, and failure to meet final product specifications can have disastrous consequences, including price penalties and more seriously loss of sales contracts. A simple formula is introduced which allows the evaluation of dynamic pile tests. The following case is considered: The pile top is dynamically loaded by an impact. The velocity v of the pile top is recorded over the time. Let v1 and v2 be the first and the second maximum of this curve. Then, the pile bearing capacity (resulting from ideally plastic resistance at the pile wall and at the tip) can be set approximately equal to Z(v1- ½ v2), where Z is the impedance of the pile cross section. Due to the assumption of ideal plastic resistances, radiation damping needs not be taken into account. Material damping may be important in rate sensitive soils (such as clay, even if it is highly overconsolidated). A simple correction procedure for material damping is proposed.

The lignite deposits of the Kozani-Ptolemais-Amyntaio basin in western Macedonia (North-West Greece) present a difficult modelling problem. Each deposit consists of several thin lignite layers ranging from a few centimetres to a few tens of centimeters in thickness, and thin intercalated sterile layers of marly limestones, marls, clays, and sands. These layers are practically impossible to model individually due to fast lateral transition of lignite layers to humus clay and vice versa and the lack of reliable and detailed stratigraphic correlation, leading to compositing methods being applied prior to any interpolation and modelling. The complexity of the deposit is further increased by the presence of a number of faults. This paper presents the modelling and estimation procedures applied during the most recent study of the South Western Field ? a new deposit that is considered for development and lignite production over the next years and will support the operation of a new power station in the area. Special focus is given to drillhole database structuring, fault modelling, stratigraphic correlation, mineable lignite intervals compositing, and resource estimation. The use of specialised mine planning software in all stages of modelling and estimation is thoroughly explained.

Adaptations and redesign of the existing already very successful and proven road milling machine concept and technical innovations such as an optimized, specifically for mining application developed cutting drum, cutting housing design and cutting tools, high manoeuvrability achieved via a tight turning radius, a three disk clutch system and a cutting drum drive that allows for the acceptance of higher loads, a complete reinforcement of the chassis to withstand higher vibrations and torque, the installation of increased engine power via a modern drive unit, a specifically for mining/construction applications developed operator’s platform and finally a redesigned air intake system and the adaptation of the levelling system resulted in far more cost effective and advantageous capabilities of Wirtgen Surface Miner in soft to medium hard mining and construction applications. As the achieved results show for the first time in modern surface mining history mechanized cutting is capable to compete successfully against traditional drill, blast/ripping and other conventional mining methods.

"Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a "plateau" and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have "exemplary" safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensiveresearch since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters.The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster in the North Sea, on the 6 July 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry.In short, an explosion and fire occurred when a pipe started leaking gas and ignited. A temporary flange, with no safety valve, was used to block off this pipe during a maintenance operation the previous shift. The permit to advise operators not to start the pumps on this line was misplaced and lost. Several deficiencies, problems and system failures coincided. A key factor was that the water deluge system was inoperable at the time and failed to extinguish the large fire that erupted, followed by an even larger gas explosion. The accommodation unit, situated on top of the oil rig, was the main "killing field" - most men gathered here to await instructions (which never came) and where they died from smoke inhalation. Later, a large explosion of the gas pipeline from an adjoined rig exploded and killed more people.The line of events and the associated system failures are all very relevant in the analysis of the accident, and provide the only insight into what caused the accident. But much "further back", inside the organization’s culture, lurks more dark matter. The first inclination is to ask what was "deficient" in the culture. Did they not care enough about safety, or about their people? Did they have a culture where production decisions were more important than safety considerations? Did they ‘coerce’ supervisors and employees to ignore safety precautions or did they just "fly by the seat of their pants"?Not surprisingly, it is very difficult to identify the true nature of the culture in that business because in such an aftermath of death and destruction, no one dare say that the safety culture was a ‘positive one, focused and caring’ or that the company was doing well in safety and that this is only a freak accident. Indeed, there were many deficiencies in the organization’s systems and procedures, such as the permit to work system.But there are some niggling questions: How is then that the Piper Alpha Oil Rig was actually considered the company’s most productive and safest oil rig in the North Sea? Why would this rig win a safety competition, 6 months before the disaster, with the deficient permit as its most outstanding successful system?"

The measurement of near-field shock has always been an attractive proposition for those working in the field of explosive and blast performance. The most commonly employed technique involves the use of piezoelectric accelerometers. Although highly effective, these complicated devices are relatively expensive and are often destroyed in the blast event. This paper describes the development and field-testing of a shock sensor of sufficiently low cost to enable it to be routinely used in product blasting. This new device is based on piezoelectric wafer technology and does not require any external signal conditioning. The device is housed in a small cylindrical package with approximate dimensions of 30mm (1.2”) length and 5mm (0.2”) diameter. It has been determined that the most effective way of fixing the device to rock is in a small diameter hole with epoxy glue. Alternatively the sensor can be simply placed in holes filled with either water or bulk emulsion explosive.

In this study, coke oven tar additions over a range of 0?8 wt.% were evaluated as a possible substitute for imported coal fractions. The coke oven tar used was collected from tar decanters in the byproducts section of the coking plant. The moisture content in the tar varied depending on the residence time and water carryover from the coke oven tar separators to the storage tanks. Moisture contents of 1 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.% were investigated in order to evaluate the effect on coal blend, carbonization, and coke properties. At 6 wt.% moisture content with 6 wt.% coke oven tar, although the coke quality improved the yield showed a 4% decrease. On the other hand, 1 wt.% moisture content with coke oven tar of 6 wt.%, increased the yield by 1% and the coke quality improved. However, the latter process was characterized by an excessive increase in wall pressure and pushing energy, both of which are detrimental to the oven walls. The optimum moisture content in coke oven tar was found to be 3 wt.% with a coke oven tar addition of 6 wt.% in the coal blend. With these conditions, the coke properties improved and wall pressure and pushing energy were acceptable. However, a decrease in coke yield of up to 2% was observed. Despite this, coke oven tar addition is considered to be a viable option based upon economic factors of a reduction in the quantity and cost of imported coking coals that is required to achieve the same optimum final coke product. "The Johnny Mountain gold mine in northern British Columbia, owned by skyline Gold Corporation, has been in operation since August 1988. Mill operating difficulties at the start of the operation resulted in a depleted cash flow situation and quick improvements were required to generate a self-sustaining financial basis of operation. In October 1988, Melis Engineering Ltd. was contracted to identify metallurgical difficulties, implement necessary modifications, and undertake mill operations and personnel training in order to achieve production targets.This paper presents the operating difficulties which existed at start-up and describes the methodology used to overcome production problems. Metallurgical testing results are described along with the modifications made to the milling circuit to suit ore metallurgy. Plant changes led to the operation of a simple gravity/flotation circuit to recover gold as bullion and in a copper concentrate. Operation of the originally installed cyanidation circuit was discontinued. This contributed to substantial savings in operating costs and virtually eliminated environmental problems. PROPERRTY LOCATION ANR DESCRIPTIONThe Johnny Mountain mine site is located in northern British Columbia along the Iskuit River about 60 km east of Wrangell, Alaska and 275 km north of Terrace, B. C.. With ultrasonics application during checking the large diameter cast-in-situ pile body, it is usualy applied the statistical method of probability and PSD. This paper presents a converse probabilistic-analytical method which can identify important anomalies, both strong and weak, during interfered situation. So the inhomogeneity in concrete pile may be ellectively distinguished. In order to ensure the capacity of bed rock support layer under large diameter pile, a test-in-situ is conducted to determine the compresive strength and shear force inserting rock of the support layer, so the compresive strength and modulus value of elasticity of bed rock tested will closely tally with the actual situation.

The International Seabed Authority and a number of countries have or are in the process of developing environmental impact assessment guidelines and legislation for seafloor mineral development. The formal decision to grant a project an environmental permit is based on an environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA), culminating in an environmental impact statement (EIS). The EIS needs to be supported by sufficient data upon which an assessment of impacts can be made and mitigation measures developed. Given the remote locations of many seafloor prospects, collection of sufficient environmental data to inform an EIS is often a difficult, expensive and lengthy process.

Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). Disks Thus, a 113-mm (5 1/4-in.) floppy disk - double sided and double density (DSDD) - contains 320,000 bytes (characters) or 320K. This is about 164 double-spaced, type-
