Systematic leakage surveys of natural-gas transmission lines not only aid in the conservation of gas, but can be made to show direct financial returns of large magnitude. 1. Such surveys reveal the actual leakage from the lines, and indicate repairs to be made in order, to eliminate unnecessary waste. 2. Tests on lines, after repairs are made, show the actual saving that has been accomplished. 3. Tests on newly constructed lines reveal the presence of leakage that should be eliminated before the lines are put into service.

Mineral deposits of the central New Guinea region (Gunung Bijih, Ok Tedi, Mount Kare, Porgera, Frieda River) and of southeastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, Wafi, Hamata, Hidden Valley, Tolukuma, Misima) are associated with hot, forceful intrusions of magma of mantle origin that penetrated thick Precambrian and Palaeozoic continental crust. The interaction of high- temperature melt with continental crust, and the differentiation of melt while in transit through thick crust, may be factors in generating ore. Mineralised intrusives in central New Guinea are a result of Neogene- Quaternary magmatism and were emplaced in a foreland thrust belt environment, a setting similar to the (mineralised) Laramide intrusions of southwestern USA. In both cases, central New Guinea and the Laramide, magmatism is not obviously subduction- related. Mineralised intrusives in south- eastern New Guinea (Wau-Edie Creek, etc.), also, are in a thrust belt setting, and are not obviously subduction-related. The association of. gold in southeastern New Guinea with a second (Pliocene) phase of igneous activity, rather than with earlier (Miocene) activity suggests that re-working by successive intrusions may be a factor in localising ore. This is seen, also, in the Bismarck-Solomon islands region where the richer deposits are associated with later (Pliocene) intrusives rather than with earlier (Eocene-Oligocene) intrusives. Unlike the mainland mineral deposits, those of the Bismarck-Solomon islands are clearly subduction-related.

Before 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. When considering expansion, it was decided that the existing process would not lend itself to a program geared toward processing the total output of copper precipitate and copper concentrate from KUCC mining and concentrating operations. During 1989 and 1990, several smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy) of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy). The smelter facility that used the Noranda technology was shut down in May 1995. The flash smelting furnace operation began in June with the flash converting furnace start-up a few weeks later.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines is conducting human factors research for the purpose of reducing accidents and improving the person-machine interface found in surface and underground mining operations. Miners are exposed to a variety of environmental stressors, e.g., extreme heat, noise, vibration, and adverse illumination, throughout the workday. Exposure to these environmental stressors has been noted in the literature to affect performance on vigilance tasks. Since impaired performance at vigilance tasks can lead to industrial accidents, further investigation of the effects of environmental stressors on human performance is warranted. A brief description of the environmental conditions present in the mining workplace is followed by a review of experiments dealing with the effects of environmental stressors on vigilance task performance. The applicability of past research to actual mining operations is considered.

1. This, the final report to the U. S. Bureau of Mines on the program with the subject title, presents the data obtained from June 29, 1973, to April 20, 1974. 2. Operating in the Illinois #6 coal seam, the effectiveness of foam opposed to water was compared in reducing respirable coal dust. A combination of 39 foam generators and 14 water sprays were used during the foam tests. Sixty one water sprays were operated during the water tests. Data from 24 shifts using foam and 21 shifts using water are presented. 3. Additional work on foam generator design should be undertaken to provide coverage to a wider area with foam. 4. The general attitude of those working on the foam program and with the miner at the face was positive. It is urged that the work be continued. 5. The minor respiratory irritations evidently caused by an aerosol effect of the surfactant should be investigated. 6. The statistical analysis of the tests will be made and reported by the U. S. Bureau of Mines.

The Eskay Creek Mine is a high-grade gold and silver underground mine in northwestern British Columbia. The mine started operations in late1994. For the first three years, ore was crushed to -50 mm(-2 in.), blended to satisfy smelter terms and shipped to smelters in Japan and Canada. Preliminary evaluations indicated that a complex metallurgical facility, requiring a large capital investment, would be required to recover the precious and other economic metals. So markets for raw ore were identified and underground mining and ore transportation operations began at a production rate of 300 t/d (330stpd).

"The metal mining industry in Canada has been dramatically affected by the changes that have occurred in the world mineral market place. World economic restructuring in the post ""oil shock"" period of the mid-1970s, greatly increased competition from suppliers in the developing countries, and commodity price and currency pressures have all combined to severely test Canadian competitiveness. In the new mining world, the rate of growth of demand for metals has declined due to product downsizing, materials substitution, and a relatively slower growth of over-all world economic activity.The interplay of market and political factors is complex. Canadian metal mining companies must compete in world markets against low-cost producers in developing nations whose priorities often appear to be centred on maximizing foreign exchange earnings to foster development goals and debt repayment. Many of these countries have high levels of government intervention in their mining industries. The result is a greatly in-creased number of suppliers all vying for a share of a world demand growing at a relatively slower rate than in the past. To be able to compete under these circumstances, Canadian companies have had to undertake 'survival mode' measures and look to new ways of doing things. In order to identify the effects that the recent market and economic trends have had on the Canadian metal mining industry, a study was undertaken by Canada Employment and Immigration to assess these changes and their implications for the metal mining workforce.The Canadian Occupational Projection System (COPS)—Sector Study Group with the cooperation of the Mining Association of Canada, undertook a human resource survey to gather current employment and occupation information. This formed an important part of the Canadian Occupational Projection System Metal Mining Sector Study. This article addresses the with survey results, a C.E.I.C. worker mobility study, and trends and issues that are changing the mix of jobs and the way they are being done.Figure 1 shows metal mining employment for the period from 1974 to 1984. It provides a clear picture of the employment swings that the industry has experienced especially during the recession period of 1981 to 1983. From 1981 to 1983, employment dropped by 14 000, from 68 000 to 54 764, and then dropped to its lowest point in 1984 of 52 783. We feel that employment in the medium term will be flat with growth in gold mines being largely offset by continued workforce rationalizing in other sectors.Perhaps the key point is that equivalent levels of output have been achieved in the recent period (1981-1984) with a workforce that is 25% smaller than it was in 1974. This also raises the questions which the COPS/MAC survey and COPS mobility study sought to clarify, namely, what jobs have been cut and where have these people gone? Equally important are the questions of occupational skill level changes, and what types of jobs are declining and which ones are becoming increasingly important, as economic and technological changes have altered the mining work place."

The results presented in this report deal with the elimination of explosion hazards of ether-oxygen mixtures by the addition of helium. The method is based upon the fact that every combustible gas, vapor, or dust will not burn or explode when the oxygen content of the mixture is reduced below certain definite values. These critical oxygen values are usually different for each combustible, varying with the percentage of the combustible present in the mixture and also with the inert gaseous material used to reduce the oxygen content of the mixture.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines has, primarily through its contract program, used large-scale centrifuges to determine design criteria for tailing embankments. The centrifuge runs were made at two installations, the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England and Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM. The major problems considered were as follows: slope stability of embankments, modeling erosion and seepage, use of the phreatic surface level to ascertain the validity of centrifuge modeling, and the effects of compaction and weathering on a tailings embankment. This report summarizes the results of the four test series conducted at University of Cambridge and Sandia National Laboratories. A review of prior centrifuge applications to mining problems is included. Consideration is given to future centrifuge application to mining problems in both soil and rock mechanics.

Pyrolysis (destructive distillation) techniques developed at the Bureau of Mines to determine the yield and quality of the products from coal were used to convert municipal (household) and industrial refuse into potentially useful solids, liquids, and gases without adding to environmental pollution. The tests demonstrated that a ton of municipal refuse can be converted into 154 to 424 pounds of solid residue, 0.5 to 6 gallons of tar, 1 to 4 gallons of light oil, 97 to 133 gallons of liquor, 16 to 32 pounds of ammonium sulfate, and 7,380 to 18,058 cubic feet of gas. A ton of industrial refuse, consisting of paper, rags, and cardboard, can be converted to 618 to 838 pounds of residue, 1.5 to 3 gallons of light oil, 68 to 75 gallons of liquor, 12 to 23 pounds of ammonium sulfate, and 9,270 to 14,065 cubic feet of gas. The energy from the gas is more than sufficient to provide the heat for the pyrolysis.

The domestic concentrate used by the Shanghai Meishan Metallurgical Corporation in Nanjing contains significant siderite, magnetite and haematite, the siderite having a substantial influence on its sintering behaviour. On the basis of experimental findings and published information it is proposed that siderite decomposition starts at c.400 degrees C and results in the formation of CO and/or H2, which then reduces the haematite to magnetite prior to the initiation of high-temperature sintering; inter-mixed particles of Australian haematite and pisolite ores also undergo significant reduction. As the gaseous reduction process is so effective, low-temperature forms of silico-ferrite of Ca and Al (SFCA) cannot form even at high sinter basicity. The bench-scale results were confirmed in a pilot-scale facility whose sinters consisted mainly of magnetite, high-temperature SFCA and glass, which is typical of sinters formed from mixes with high magnetite levels

On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

The design requirements for mine ventilation seals have undergone a radical transformation in recent years, and these revisions have greatly increased the cost of the seal designs and their construction. For example, in the past two years, new federal regulations have increased the minimum design requirement to withstand explosion pressures from 138 kPa (20 psig) to 345 kPa (50 psig) or 827 kPa (120 psig), depending on whether the sealed mine volume is monitored continuously or not. Moreover, there is still a possibility that under certain conditions (such as detonations) even higher pressure requirements may be necessary. The ability of a monolithic, stand-alone mine seal to reliably withstand the full range of current and future pressures is becoming increasingly difficult and expensive. In an effort to develop a practical alternative, the West Virginia Office of Miners? Health Safety and Training (WVOMHST) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have collaborated in a research effort to develop a practical, economic, and safe mine sealing technique that can enable mines seals to meet the full range of new explosion pressure design requirements. The basic idea is to use a barrier of common mine gob and rubble in combination with a conventional mine seal so that the pressure resulting from a gas explosion is reflected, absorbed, and attenuated, so the pressure on the ventilation seal is reduced. This paper discusses some concepts and preliminary test results for a ?Passive Mine Blast Attenuator? (PMBA) that can provide a useful alternative to increasingly larger and stronger stand-alone mine seals. Numerical models and full-scale experiments conducted at the NIOSH Lake Lynn Laboratory Experimental Mine (LLEM) show that the use of a PMBA can signficantly reduce the blast pressure and impulse on conventional ventilation seals. This paper describes the concept and development of the use of a uni-delay shock tube system in the timing and initiation of the development rounds, specifically in flat development. It was extended from stoping and now constitutes the only initiation system is use at Kopanang mine. The two explosives initiation systems in general use in underground mines are the conventional fuse-igniter cord system, and the more modern Long Period Delay shock tube system, better known as the numbered LP system. Both are well accepted but have many drawbacks which can result in poor breaking and substantial wastage of the blasting material. Both of these deficiencies cause an increase in the cost of a blast. Hitherto, the limited number of delays available has complicated the use of shock tubes in development blasting. Over eighteen month period to the end of 2007, a project team comprising members from Kopanang Mine and AEL developed a method for the use of a uni-delay shock tubes to time any development round. These uni-delay shock tubes are better known as Reef Masters® or EZ-Stopers® depending on the supplier, and the system has particular application in flat development. During the project, two new shock tube system components were designed, tested and manufactured; namely Splitters and Starter Packs. The system has been successfully tested and implemented in both on-reef and off-reef development ends. At Kopanang, it has now been rolled out across the entire mine. Other AnglogoldAshanti mines are conducting trials and implementations into production sections. Initial results indicate improvements in the ground conditions and excavation profiles. The cost of blasting is showing a downward trend. The authors consider that the system is a tool for use in further blast optimization and will contribute to rationalization of the explosives commodities basket on mines.

When establishing an underwater testing site for the energy measurements of the explosives, the dimensions of the measuring pool have to be measured to find out what is the maximum weight for the test charge. Secondly one has to decide the distance between the pressure gauge and the shooting point. Thirdly the pool has to be calibrated because of the reflections of the explosions by measuring the bubble periods of the calibration charges. The calibration shots can also be used to estimate the minimum weight of the explosive charge for the reliable energy measurements by calculating the shock, gas heave and total energy values and their standard deviations.

"The purpose of this paper is to introduce to the minerals processing marketplace a viable alternative to conventional mechanical agitation and pachuca airlift agitation. What follows is a brief introduction to the Atara Corporation and the fundamentals of how an Atara ""cannon"" mixer operates. The main body of the paper is concerned with the results of a study to evaluate the cannon mixer for a gold cvanide leach application. A brief summary of research and testing for other metallurgical applications is also presented.1. 1 THE COMPANYThe Atara Corporation is a privately owned Canadian company, headquarted in Dorval, Quebec. Its subsidiary, Atara Incorporated, located in Paramus, New Jersey services the municipal wastewater treatment market in the United States. Dorval focuses on industrial mixing applications in Canada and the US. The Atara Corporation provides design, engineering and specifications of agitators for mineral land other) processing applications. Fabrication of mixers is pursued in either Canada or the US, depending on the ultimate destination.Although Atara and its unique static in-tank mixer are relative newcomers to the mining industry, the cannon mixer has demonstrated its value over the past 20 years in municipal wastewater treatment services. In the past four years the Atara unit has been developed for industrial applications; the bulk of the development work has been for metallurgical applications. To-date the cannon mixer has been evaluated for mixing slurries in the following applications: nickel-copper concentrate storage, copper concentrate storage, coal slurry storage, gold cyanide leaching, uranium acid leaching, silver leaching and zinc acid leaching. "Quantitative information about the quality of metal balance results is often overlooked when making important plant production planning decisions. Not only is this common omission made in a context where many measurements taken in and around mineral processing plants carry significant errors, but it also conflicts with the AMIRA P754 Code of Practice for Metal Accounting. The fact that metal balances are typically published without any indication of data quality may give the wrong impression that the measurements are unquestionably accurate. While it is true that statistical data reconciliation can improve the confidence intervals of redundant variables, there is no data processing technique that brings them down to zero at a finite cost. In this paper, we review the entire data flow, starting from field instruments to metal accounting-based decision-making to show how measurement errors are transmuted into business risks associated with production planning. Necessary conditions for first exposing then quantifying such business risks are stated. Pitfalls to be avoided are also discussed. Finally, a simplified risk assessment and management procedure which considers the quality of metal balance results are applied to a polymetallic mineral processing plant. INTRODUCTION Each and every mineral processing plant has production reporting obligations. In this paper, we are concerned with metal accounting reports (Morrison, 2008) where saleable metal flows and inventories are estimated and published. These metal accounting reports are delivered to a variety of stakeholders who use them for internal management purposes (day-to-day plant production planning, plant operation optimisation, capital spending, etc.) as well as for external management (royalty settlements, tolling agreements, etc.). Hence, there should be no doubt that spotless metal accounting is instrumental to high-quality corporate governance (Gaylard et al., 2014) of mining and metallurgical companies. To this extent, one would have expected industry-endorsed standards to have emerged a long time ago. However, the lack of an accepted set of standard procedures for metallurgical accounting was explicitly recognized as an industry-wide problem only in August 2001 during an SAIMM workshop held in Cape Town, South Africa. Discussions that followed this workshop led to the initiation of the AMIRA Project P754, “Metal Accounting and Reconciliation”, in 2003."

En la actualidad, el proceso de Ore Control de Tintaya se convierte en un reto porque la naturaleza del yacimiento Metasomático de Contacto Tipo Skarn presenta una mineralización compleja a manera de pasas en una torta. En ese sentido, la cultura Sigma -que presenta poderosas herramientas estadísticas y de gestión de procesos-, logró conceptualizar el proceso de ore control e identificar y optimizar tres sub-procesos críticos: el muestreo de Blasthole, preparación y análisis de Muestras de Blasthole y el Ore Control Operativo. Por ello, el presente texto señala la optimización del oro control de Tintaya a través de la metodología Six Sigma, donde se logra mejorar el proceso desde el muestreo de blasthole hasta el envío de mineral a las plantas, se minimiza los eventos de fuga de mineral a los botaderos y con la data confiable de los blasthole, se elaboran modelos de corto plazo que permiten generar planes predecibles de minado.
