RyderTaken as a whole, the difference between the four papers in this session were perhaps more illuminating than their similarities. The titles of the first and second papers contained the word 'simulation', and in both papers random number generation was relied upon in the selection of inputs from empirical distributions, but the nature of the models to which these values were inputs were quite different. The third paper displayed another method of uniting the empirical and the theoretical in a linear programming formulation whose matrix coefficients were measured empirically, and here some apt remarks on computer implementation were included. This paved the way for the last paper which abandoned all theoretical pretensions in favour of a detailed description of computer implementation and perhaps as a result gave rise to the most feeling audience participation.The systems mentioned were developed for the iron, petrol, copper and gold producing industries in the US, Canada, Zambia and South Africa..As with all the parallel sessions, contributions from the floor may have been limited by the shorter time available to delegates to acquaint themselves with the papers before the session. In spite of this, and due largely to the active chairman¬ship of Dr Cook, the discussion during the session which is summarized here contributed much to the information contained in the papers themselves.In his presentation, Dr Calder summarized his paper. He expected that simulation would be used in future on an almost universal basis in open pit mining. It could contribute new knowledge more cheaply than experimentation in the flea For example, this study had shown what was previously thought to be a matter of more shovels and trucks was really a blasting problem, and improving blasting had increased production to the desired level. The simulation had shown that uniformity of truck performance was a desirable factor. It had also been used to study the advisability of a dispatching system.Dr Ramani contended that where equipment characteristics were available, deterministic standard simulation could adequately simulate systems in which interference occurred. Operator performance could be measured against perfor¬mance curves predicted by standard simulation and poor operators spotted and retrained. The present system did not take into account variability in truck loading, for instance. Dr Calder replied that if the number of variables was large, the standard approach became too complicated for operating personnel to follow. He admitted he had not tried it. The variability of truck loading could be coped with easily using the Monte Carlo approach. Operator variability was already incorporated because the time studies are actual."

The effect of LiF additions on liqt.1id1.:1s temperature and electrical conductivity over a wide range of cryolite bath ratios (1.0 to 1.5 weight ratio) was investigated. Results did not agree with multi-regression equations reported by Dewing and Choudhary over the entire region. New regression equations were developed. Reasons? are given for the differences. The models are used to discuss the economic implications of LiF additions to Hali cell electrolytes.

A pilot mining robot, named MineRo-II, has been developed by KIOST during 2011-2012. The pilot scale was defined as 1/5 of the commercial mining capacity, 1.5 million dry-tons of nodules per year. The development purpose of MineRo-II is to use for the pilot mining test planned in 2015. MineRo-II was designed to be self-propelled by electric-hydraulic power and remotely operated in real-time from aboard. The main operational functions are crawling on seafloor, pick-up and crushing of nodules, discharging nodules out to buffer. Prior to MineRo-II, a test miner (MineRo-I) was developed in scale of 1/20th in 2007, and performed two times sea trials in 2009 and 2010. The results of performance tests were evaluated and utilized for the concept of MineRo-II. The design concept aimed at the expandability of the mining capacity based on modularity of configuration, maintenance simplicity and multiplicity of backup solution. The pilot-scale mining capacity is achieved by four pick-up modules of each 1m wide, which are moving forward with robot vehicle and sweep the nodules entering below the pick-up heads. Principally, by adding the pickup modules in lateral dimension the mining capacity may increase linearly. MineRo-II was designed and constructed in unit-module wise. The robot consists of two unit-modules having an identical mechanical and hydraulic configuration. Each unitmodule has two tracks, two pick-up devices with attitude control devices, two crushers, one discharge pump, and one hydraulic system. AFTER the completion, in 1905, of the Hammond Mining and Metallurgical Laboratory of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University, it became necessary to secure and assay a large assortment of ore-samples, and to arrange the results in such a manner as to admit of use with the least amount of work on the part of the instructor. At first, pulp-samples, together with their respective assays, were secured from the mines, smelters, and public assayers, but this practice did not prove satisfactory. It was not only difficult to secure a sufficiently large supply of material, but it was also impossible to secure the proper assortment required for instructing students. It involved considerable work for the donors to select the samples and furnish a record of the assays, and also for the instructors to examine each pulp and determine its character. Some of the samples did not contain a sufficient quantity of pulp for the student to check his work in case his first assay did not correspond to the record. In order to increase the number of samples and to vary the character of the material, pulp-samples were later mixed with barren rock and with sulphides, but this method also was unsatisfactory and has been discontinued. At present., small lots of ore are secured by gift or purchase from engineers, public assayers, and the managers of mines, mills, and smelters. These lots weigh from 10 to 100 lb. each, and are rarely finer than 0.25 in. in size. The larger samples permit of a careful study by the instructor in order to determine the best method of assaying to be followed. Arquivos de Big Data da ArcelorMittal Tubarão foram estudados para que fosse possível a identificação das causas principais das projeções a partir de estudos estatísticos de análises multivariadas, técnicas ainda pouco usuais para estudos na área de aciaria. Foram utilizados os softwares Statistica, Genes, e Rbio com novas propostas de utilização de ferramentas desta área, como a análise de componentes principais e a análise de trilha e análise de rede de correlações. Foi possível verificar, por exemplo, que o peso de briquete misto adicionado durante o sopro e o teor de silício no gusa carregado estão entre as principais causas de projeção.

The purpose of this article is to describe briefly the operation of a 6-ton blast furnace on a charge of bauxite, limestone, iron ore, and cast-iron turnings and to point out the bearing which smelting such a charge has upon the production of alumina cement. One object of the experiment, conducted by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Aluminum Co. of America, was to determine whether tae so-called Pedersen process3 can be applied to the blast furnace. This process consists of smelting a charge of bauxite, iron ore, and. limestone, and results in to products. One is a slag containing about 50 per cent of A1203 and is intended for use in manufacturing aluminum, and the other is iron low in sulphur. Complete details of the test are published in other reports4. Blast-furnace slag is now recognized as a satisfactory and economical raw material for making Portland cement, Wm. A. Forbes5 has recently reported that in 1926 an important steel interest used well over 1 million tons of slag in producing about 24 million long, tons of cement. This is equivalent to about ½ ton of slag for each ton of cement. Alumina cement can be made direct in the blast furnace. Its physical character would have to be changed by grinding, but no change in its chemical composition would be necessary.

Soda ash is produced in over 39 countries by the Solvay ammonia-soda process or by mining natural sodium carbonate deposits. The total production of soda ash in 1980 is estimated at slightly over 29 million metric tons. Synthetic production accounted for over 75% of this amount with the balance of production originating from natural sources (either trona or sodium carbonate-rich brines) found primarily in the United States, Mexico, Kenya, and Chad.

The use of the verb in this mood is not as common as formerly: at the time, for' example, when the Bible was translated and the plays of Shakespeare were written. Nevertheless it is an essential part of literary English. In editing the `Mining and Scientific Press' I do not insist upon the use of the subjunctive in articles that are contributed from the outside, but it is deemed proper in all our editorial writing. To speak plainly, the subjunctive is I a mark of scholarship; it is ignored by those that are not particular in such matters, and unfortunately it is a source of perplexity to many that are entirely unfamiliar with the use of it. Therefore, as an editor, I think it well to allow the indicative mood to be used by contributors in sentences in which, to be strictly correct, the verbs .should be in the subjunctive mood. The fact that most subjunctives are indistinguishable in form from indicatives is another cause of trouble to the uninitiated.* For example, the verbs in such phrases as "Suffice it to say ", "So help me God ", and "God save the King" Fare in the subjunctive. One reason why the subjunctive is becoming uncommon is the growing habit of expressing the subjunctive meaning by aid of auxiliary verbs that are coupled with the infinitive; thus: "It will suffice' to say" and "May God save the King". The subjunctive is common in subordinate clauses, and that is how it obtained its name, `subjunctive', meaning * The student is referred to `A New English Grammar', by E. A. Sonnenschein, published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford. This textbook (see pp. 60-71 in Part III) discusses the subject luminously.

"Mechanical alloying (MA) synthesizing technology and thennohydrogen processing (THP) were utilized to produce nanocrystalline Ti-MMC's reinforced by TiB intermetallic compound by using TiH2-B powder mixtures. Powders MA'ed up to 8 hours were examined by X-ray diffraction and SEM study. All MA'ed powders afterwards were HIP'ed at 700, 800 and 950EC for 1 hour. Detailed XRD, SEM and TEM study of the samples were carried out to determine the structure and micrography of the Ti-TiB MMC material processed by MA+THP approach followed by HIP'ing at high temperatures.IntroductionThe fiber reinforced titanium base composites [1,2] which possess a great resistance to high temperature have been investigated. In these studies fibers of C and SiC were used as reinforcing materials. However, these fibers react with Ti-matrix at elevated temperature resulting in product formation at the interface between the matrix and the fiber. Because of the chemical reactions, strength of the product MMC material diminishes.In conventional techniques of whisker reinforced composite material production, the mixtures of matrix metal powders and dispersed fibers are consolidated by hot pressing, HIP and/or hot extrusion. These techniques, however, have some shortcomings. Hard and brittle fibers could be broken during mixing cycle of the processing. Consolidation techniques could also be the cause for fiber breakdown. Attaining of the uniform dispersion of fibers into the metal matrix is not an easy process. The chemical reactions at elevated temperature exposures in the interface between the matrix material and fiber reinforcement cause product formations leading to poor mechanical properties."

The Sigma-Lamaque Complex is considered a lode-gold deposit characterized by narrow vein structures, which have been mined historically by underground methods. In addition to the narrow vertical structures, mining also took place on horizontal veins, ?North Dipper? veins and dykes mineralized with sub-horizontal veins and stringers. Over the 60 + years of production, mining took place to a depth of 1.8 km. The upper portion of the deposit was considered all but exhausted, when viewed from an underground mining perspective. The year 1998 is considered a turning point for the Complex when a small open pit was mined at Sigma. The resource evaluation methods used underground were applied to surface mining, which allowed small pits to be mined. The resource evaluation method considered only the narrow vertical structures and was not well adapted to open pit mining. As a consequence, resources were consistently under evaluated. It became clear that a new geological approach was necessary to more accurately define resources (i.e., what was being mined). In order to integrate all characteristics (geometry, mechanics and chronology) of this complex lode-gold deposit, a new geological model was proposed. Due to this new approach, dating to February 2000 and updated in December 2000, the reserves evaluated in the first 180 meters now stand at 15 million tonnes @ 2.61 g/t Au (1,265,350 oz). Those reserves cover an east-west corridor extending 1,500 m by 750 m.

The lack of an iron-smelting industry in the Pacific Northwest places the ferrous metals industries under an economic handicap. No iron-smelting enterprises, now dormant, had been operated successfully. Iron made at both of hoes installations proved to be satisfactory for normal pig-iron uses. Electric power and reductants acre available in the area. Power from the dames now completed and. those being constructed insures present and future needs for basic industries. Subbituminous coal, close to the main supply of iron ore, insures ample reluctant for all smelting requirements.

Durante mucho tiempo la explotación del azufre en el interior del Perú, ha sido de manera regular dado su bajo consumo nacional y cotización en el mercado peruano. Asi, solo ciertos yacimientos ubicados en el norte de nuestro país producen y generan divisas que no sobrepasan los 6 millones de soles. En el marco de esta situación, el objetivo del siguiente estudio, pretende reactivar el consumo nacional de los yacimientos del Sur del país, -en tanto volumen e importancia comercial por medio del uso de un método de beneficio apropiado. La formación de los yacimientos del Sur, a diferencia de los de Piura y Bayovar, se da por la emanación postvolcánica de gases sulfurosos, generandoimpregnaciones de azufre en las lavas y tufos del Terciario Superior y Cuaternario. Posteriormente se produjeron fracturas en las zonas contíguas de los volcanes, formando depósitos lenticulares de extensión variable. Dichos depósitos son superficiales puesto que solo cerca de este espacio se puede mantener la oxidación del sulfuro de hidrógeno y los gases están a temperatura baja para depositar azufre. En cuanto al costo del azufre tenemos el costo de explotación, beneficio, transporte y embarque. Finalmente, se deduce que la fundición del azufre como la filtración, soliflucción pueden ser favorables en el uso de métodos de explotación menos costosos, asi como el incremento de la explotación depende de un mercado común estable y de un cálculo exacto de los costos de producción.

The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Explosive Excavation Research Office (EERO) of Livermore, California, has been engaged in research and development of excavation techniques using both nuclear and conventional explosives since 1962. Prior to July 1971, this organization was designated the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Nuclear Cratering Group. The EERO mission is performed as part of the joint Atomic Energy Commission -Corps of Engineers nuclear excavation research pro-gram. During the period 1962-1969, the Corps executed many cratering explosions using spherical charges of up to 85 tons of nitromethane to model nuclear excavation concepts and to develop design criteria for the nuclear cratering explosions. The experience gained in these modeling tests suggested that explosive excavation using large chemical explosive charges could be applied to excavation projects as an economical substitute for traditional excavation techniques. Consequently, the Corps' research program was broadened in 1969 to include development of chemical explosive excavation as a construction tool. The term "explosive excavation" denotes the use of large buried explosive charges to produce an excavation by fracturing the material and casting it into a desired configuration. In its simplest form, this technology involves detonation of a single explosive charge buried at the proper depth to produce a crater which is roughly hyperbolic in cross section. The types of craters produced by various depths of burial are illustrated by Figure 1. Single or Multiple rows of charges are used to excavate linear cuts required for water conveyance or navigation channels. .More complex explosive excavations include small craft harbors, railroad and highway cuts, and removal of W1denvater rock barriers to navigation. "Since 2010, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has performed eight full-scale compressive load tests on large-diameter pipe piles at four different project locations across the state. All of the piles were 42-in diameter, open-ended pipes driven to practical refusal on sedimentary bedrock with D125-32 diesel hammers from three separate manufacturers. The rapid load test method in general accordance with ASTM D7383-10 (Statnamic method) was used along with high-strain dynamic testing and subsequent signal matching. Results of these tests indicate that the axial nominal resistance of these piles in compression is not controlled by geotechnical considerations when driven with an appropriately sized hammer and installation criterion. Rather, the predominantly elastic load-deflection behavior of the piles under compressive load suggests the axial nominal compressive resistance is controlled by the structural capacity of the pile. In all instances, the rapid load tests indicated a nominal resistance exceeding that produced by high-strain dynamic tests due to insufficient hammer energy to fully mobilize resistance. In all cases, the hammers used were able to easily install the piles through the soil overburden. Mobilizing a larger hammer simply to demonstrate high-strain dynamic resistance is not economical or practical. This paper presents the subsurface conditions at each location, the ensuing test results, and the ramifications for future projects in Minnesota utilizing large-diameter open-ended pipe piles.INTRODUCTIONThe Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has recently performed eight full-scale compressive load tests on large-diameter pipe piles at four different project locations across the state. The four project locations described in this paper where pile load testing was performed are shown in Figure 1 and exist in the southeastern portion of Minnesota. The projects are all major bridges crossing the Mississippi River in three instances and the St. Croix River just above the Mississippi River in the other instance. The first project is the TH 61 Mississippi River crossing in Hasting, MN where two load tests were conducted. The second is the TH 36 St. Croix River crossing in Stillwater, MN where two load tests were performed. The third project is the I-90 Mississippi River crossing in Dresbach, MN where three load tests were conducted. The final project is the TH 43 Mississippi River crossing in Winona, MN where one load test was performed."

PART I INTRODUCTION Among the zinc base alloys used for casting in metal moulds, particularly die casting, those alloys containing aluminum usually together with copper, are probably the most widely used. The reason lies in their desirable mechanical properties and the fluidity and absence of hot shortness which facilitate casting. Objection to the use of these alloys may bee raised on account of the rather frequent instances of failure of a type variously described as disintegration, exfoliation and intercrystalline corrosion. In all cases which have come to our knowledge where the conditions of service were known, failure has occurred upon exposure to moisture and heat varying from a hot moist atmosphere to high pressure steam. Moreover, the alloys described in all such cases contain impurities or alloying metals which the present authors have found to have enormous accelerating effects on intercrystalline oxidation in zinc-aluminum alloys. Thus Williams1 experimented with an alloy containing a large percentage of tin exposed in Cuba. Bauer2 reports failure of a boiler plug containing over 1 per cent. of impurities, doubtless lead for the most part, and Rawdon's3 examinations were made on an alloy containing 0.4 per cent. lead also exposed to the Tropics. No thorough investigation of the nature and cause of this type of failure has been made heretofore, so far as the authors are aware, although Rawdon correctly classified it as internal oxidation. We have, therefore, carried out this investigation in order to determine the exact nature of this phenomenon and the effect of other metals present as impurities or intentional additions in accelerating or-retarding it. In the appendix we include a considerable amount of data which may be valuable in selecting an alloy combining good physical properties with high resistance to oxidation.

"Petroleum engineering is a comparatively new branch of engineering, with which few people, even petroleum operators and mining engineers, are thoroughly familiar. Petroleum engineers are responsible for the accurate keeping of well logs and all pertinent data upon formations encountered, for the careful analysis of such information, and recommendations as to most suitable places for drilling, for detailed study of methods of drilling, casing, and so on in order to obtain maximum production for a minimum cost.The Bureau of Hines has from time to time carried on work in all branches of petroleum engineering in the various fields of the United States. Such work is also being carried on extensively by the California State Mining Bureau, which has in its employ a number of men who have had, besides their technical training, actual experience in oil field work. This is about the only state at the present time which is carrying on this work in a definite way. It has therefore been the practice of the employees of the Bureau of Mines to go to other states and give such advice and assistance as might prove of value in development work and in prolonging the production of the fields."

THE large iron-ore producers on the Mesabi Range are able to maintain the silica in their shipping products at from 8 to 10 per cent by mixing ores of various grades, some assaying 4 per cent silica and some as high as 18 per cent silica. For each ton of 4 per cent silica ore mined, a ton of 14 per cent silica ore can be mined and mixed with it and the average grade maintained at 9 per cent. This mixing operation has made possible the utilization of large cluantities of ore too lean to be used alone. and herein lies the advantage of the producers who operate a number of mines at the same time. As the grade of the ore from one of the properties falls off, a little high-grade ore from another property can be mixed with it and the average maintained, while if one property alone were being operated all of the ore below grade would be left behind.
