"The processing of uranium ores produces tailings that could constitute environmental problems. At most operations the tailings are dumped into a designated area, with the ultimate acid drainage occurring if sulphides are present, together with the release of metal constituents to the rivers and streams. If the chemical reactions occurring within the tailings could be predicted, perhaps methods could be developed to either increase or decrease 'the rates of reaction. One such study has been in progress at CANMET during the past three years. The paper describes the use of Iysimeters containing low-grade and complex uranium tailings to determine the effects and interactions of bacteria, sulphides and solvent extraction organics on the release of radionuclides and on acid production. A simulated rain cycle nine-fold the normal was used and the Iysimeters were subjected to timed intervals of light and darkness. As a result, the tests simulated a 25-year period.IntroductionAlthough Canadians derive major benefits from uranium, there are environmental and health consequences, not yet fully understood, from the associated mining and milling operations. A major project at CANMET (Canada Centre for Mineral and Energ y Technology) has the ultimate goal of ensuring that any adverse effects on man and environment, now or in the future, resulting from the processing of uranium should be acceptably low. The magnitude of the task was exacerbated by the fact that the increased demand for electrical energy and the resultant increased prices for uranium oxide during the 1970s led to a rapid expansion in the industry. Annual world demand for uranium was expected to increase 12-15 fold in the next quarter century, with annual requirements of between 200,000 and 300,000 metric tonnes anticipated by the year 2000. Currently, the demand is low and the prices for the oxide have decreased."

THE Franklin Laboratory was designed mainly for the analysis of the products from the two concentrating mills situated at Franklin and Sterling Hill, the most important determinations being the zinc, iron, manganese, lime, moisture and silica contents of the ores. Within the last 4 years, however, it has been found advisable to examine most of our supplies, and therefore additional space and equipment was allotted for the examination of such substances as oils, greases, soaps, alloys, fuels, paints, explosives and water. The building as shown in elevation (Fig. 1) and plan (Fig. 2) consists of a main or routine laboratory, an experimental laboratory, a water FIG. 1.-WEST ELEVATION. analysis room and the other accessories such as stock room, library, sampling and drying rooms and office. The main laboratory is further divided into a balance room and zinc analysis room. As the greater part of our determinations are volumetric, good light is a very important factor and with this in view the interior walls of the building were constructed of white enameled brick laid in Keene cement. These also have the additional advantage that they give a clean and attractive appearance to the room. The windows are large, being 76 by 44 in. and even on very dark days the light is good throughout the whole laboratory. "Iron ore in Minnesota probably carries a heavier tax burden than any mineral in any other place in the world. The State Tax Commission, created in 1907, originated the system, and with the assistance of the School of Mines is constantly making such adjustments, changes and increases as appear necessary, in order to place mineral reserves on the assessment rolls at their true and full present taxable value. The ore bodies on the Mesabi are so well defined by drilling and underground devel¬opment that it is possible to estimate very exactly the volume on every forty acres of land taken as a unit. This is done by the operating or holding company and reported annually to the Tax Commission, Who check the estimates, having all data, and- proceed to fix the valuation for taxation purposes.The first step is to ascertain a general average selling price in open market, over a period of years ; then the total cost per ton (exclusive of royalty) to produce and market the ore. The difference between the average selling price and producing cost per ton is taken as the future full value per ton. This is then discounted at a rate of interest that represents the present and possible future worth of money, over a period of years that will be required to exhaust the ore body, giving the present full value per ton., Iron ore is taxed at 50 per cent of its full value, while other property is taxed at 33 1/3 per cent and 25 per cent."

THE amount or value of the precious metals consumed in dentistry is probably amazing to most people. It falls very little short of that which is consumed in jewelry. Inasmuch as the ultimate destination is in the human mouth, dental alloys enjoy some importance because life and health depend upon restorations made with them. Prosthetic dentistry has made wonderful progress in the last few years. The manufacturers who supply the metals also deserve commendation. This industry which deals with metals to go into people's mouths is comparatively new. There is no literature on the subject, and little or no precedent by which to be guided. It was only by close cooperation with the dentist or prosthetic technician that desirable physical properties were produced, as nearly as possible, in the metals which were available and permissible. It is true that there were and still are conflicting opinions among the dentists as to the physical properties they require. Sometimes they request the impossible, such as alloys which are exceedingly stiff and springy, yet will bend or adjust easily. Even in this latter instance, progress has been made by supplying methods of heat-treatment whereby metals may be softened or hardened at will. (Figs. 1 and 2.) The demands made upon manufacturers are extremely varied. They must supply metals of tensile strengths ranging from approximately 30,000 to 100,000 lb. per sq. in. and over. The latter metals must be workable and in many instances capable of extreme deformation. They must not be affected by mouth conditions, nor should they oxidize greatly when molten, at red heat, or during a soldering operation. In addition to physical specifications, color demands must also be met. The firm of which I have the most knowledge manufacturers 11,553 standard stock articles of precious metals, taking into consideration formulas, finenesses, grades, colors, gages, lengths, sizes and weights. If special demands are taken into consideration, the number would be in excess of 25,000. Wrought metals are manufactured in a great many alloys of different sizes and shapes, such as plate, bar, rod, wire, sheet, strip, mesh and foil. There are also other products of importance.

Upward pressure on all mining operations is coming from the triple bottom line. To some extent this is being offset by the rise in mineral prices, but this may or may not continue. The other serious issue facing all companies is the replacement of economic reserves as exploration levels over the past decade continued to decline in line with falling mineral prices. In order to underpin the sustainability of the mining industry it is necessary to continue to reduce cost, reduce the mine environmental footprint, whilst increasing community benefit. At the same time it is imperative that we increase the economic reserves. The highest risk is in adding new mineral discoveries as the strike rate for economic discovery decreases. Gekko Systems Pty Ltd recognises that the most simple and risk averse route to increasing economic reserves is to reduce cut-off grade in the mine, thereby bringing formerly uneconomic reserves into the economic category. We have been developing a new process flow sheet which embodies the triple bottom line and the issue of economic replacement of reserves. This paper describes this flow sheet and presents four examples where this concept is/can be applied to bring about triple bottom line benefits. Sustainability can only be assured if we are the ones in control of our environment, costs and reserves.

The molten salts M2S2O7and MHSO4, the binary molten salt systems M2S2O7-MHSO4and the molten salt-gas systems M2S2O7-V2O5and M2S2O7-M2SO4-V2O5(M = Na, K, Rb, Cs) in O2, SO2and Ar atmospheres have been investigated by thermal methods like calorimetry, Differential Enthalpic Analysis (DEA) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Fundamental thermodynamic data like temperatures and molar heats of solid-solid transition and fusion, phase diagrams, heat capacities of solids and liquids, heat of mixing, and heats of complex formation have been obtained and are reviewed here. Also EPR spectroscopic evidence of V(IV) complexes and their structure are reported and the results are discussed in relation to the mechanism of SO2oxidation by V2O5based industrial catalysts. In September 2004, Hurricanes Frances and Ivan caused the Pigeon River in western North Carolina to flood. This flooding eroded the embankment below Interstate 40 (I-40) and sent one of the eastbound lanes, along with the roadway shoulder, into the river below the embankment. North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) needed to reopen all the lanes of I-40 as soon as possible and considered this damage to be an emergency situation. NCDOT contracted Schnabel Foundation Company to design and build a repair that would keep this important interstate open and reestablish the eastbound lane. The obstacles included limited work room, the requirement of keeping the remaining lanes of I-40 in service, and producing a final product that would be relatively maintenance free and last at least 100 years. The proposed repair had to consider that the existing interstate was founded on a rock fill that was constructed from rock blasted off the adjacent mountain side. The selected design included two, tied-back micropile walls to address these obstacles and other issues. Each of the walls were constructed of 10.75 inch diameter micropiles and corrosion-protected tieback anchors installed through the existing rock fill into competent bedrock, concrete wales, and a reinforced shotcrete facing. This successful project was completed during the coldest months of the year and within the timeframe established by the State of North Carolina. This paper will discuss the design and construction of the repair and the many challenges that had to be overcome.

Time-dependent ground behavior may have important implications for the construction process or the life of a tunnel. The paper gives a concise overview of the influence of time on the deformations and the stability of underground openings, including topics such as face stability in soft ground or the time-development of pressure or deformations in squeezing or swelling rock. While keeping in mind practical questions of tunnel engineering, emphasis is placed on understanding the observed time-dependency, on the underlying mechanisms (such as pore water pressure dissipation or chemical processes) as well as on the respective inherent prediction-uncertainties and design-uncertainties.

During the latter part of 1943, a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the Mahopac magnetite mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the ore body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahopac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magnetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by "pinching", or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance from the original are body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained.

An exploration program seeking kimberlite pipes, the common primary hosts for diamonds, Was' conducted during the years 1979 through 1982 in the James Bay Lowlands of Ontario by Selco Mining Corporation (now the Mining Division of BP Resources Canada) and Esso Minerals Canada. The area to be explored was selected on the basis of its regional geological setting, and because of the known presence of kimberlite indicator minerals in the region. The primary exploration technique was low level airborne magnetic surveying, followed by detailed ground geophysics. This work located many pipe-like bodies, with diameters of a few hundred metres, as well as several dykes. Targets located by these geophysical methods were drilled, intersecting a total of45 intrusions, consisting of34 alkaline diatremes containing tuffisitic breccias, 7 carbonatites, and 4 massive alnoites. K-Ar determinations indicated ages of 152 Ma and 180 Ma for two of the massive alnoites. The texture and general mineralogy of the tuffisitic breccias are similar to those of diatreme facies kimberlites, but detailed examination of their mineralogy and chemistry demonstrated that they lie within the alnoitic rather than the kimberlitic compositional field. Although the exploration program did not lead to the discovery of true kimberlites, it did demonstrate the presence of a large, previously unknown province of alkaline volcanic activity, which has no surface expression.

Computor analysis has opened a new world of information for the mining of resources. This paper is directed at the mining of coal. The same procedures apply to most mining projects. The available facts when evaluated against the variables produce the answers. The project must be carefully analyzed, so that the facts can be organized in a data file. The file can be expanded as additional information is obtained during the entire life of the mine. If the mine is pre-planned, the file will be expanded in an orderly fashion and updated information will be available at all times. The development of a property goes through several phases; Exploration, Economic Analysis, Development, Production, and Reclamation. Each phase is an expansion of the data file. The validity of the answers is directly related to the accuracy and quantity of available data. The basis for a data file is horizontal position, and elevation of each piece of information. A coordinate system and datum are reference for a digital (X, Y and Z) position in a spatial system, a three dimensional digital model of the mine. The current practice is to use the State Plane Coordinate system and elevations as established by the U. S. Coast and Geodetic Survey. Each state has adopted this system by law. In the event there is litigation, it is an advantage to have the data on the legally recognized system. The control must be expanded so that all data can be assigned a digital position, and planned to fulfill the requirements for all phases of the mining operation. Rock bolting or anchoring are methods of stabilization which are not being fully utilized in California and probably in other parts of the world due to lack of understanding of the principles, or due to poor results in actual installation. The problem is greater in California because so much of the rock is either soft or badly fractured and broken. Almost any recognized type of rock bolt or anchor will perform successfully is hard, fresh rock, but the problems become many-fold when working in decomposed granites, shales, soft sandstones or other soft, highly-broken rock. There has been an enormous amount of research by manufacturers, consultants, private organizations, and governmental agencies on rock bolting. It would be impossible to discuss all the methods and philosophies of rock bolting in this paper. Therefore, with the indulgence of the experts, I will give only a very generalized coverage on rock bolting techniques. However, My main purpose is to point out some of the problems of rock bolting in soft rock.

THERE has never been a great civilized nation which did not have a mining industry; civilization cannot flourish without metal mining. Without tools we can have none of the 'industries that are the foundation of civilization and without metal mining we cannot produce the material of which tools are made. Therefore, if we have no metal mining we have no metals, no tools, no civilization. An example to illustrate this may be drawn from a recent article in the Saturday Evening Post which described the run-down condition of modern Athens. Athens is nothing but a busted mining camp! In its palmy days the Greeks so applied the leasing system to the silver mines of Laurium that the royalties, paid the expenses of government and instead of a tax bill the inhabitants received a pay check. The Persians came over to capture these mines but the Greek navy was built to defend them. When the silver mines played out, Greek civilization declined.. Our mining must continue if our civilization is to continue.

"In recent years, much has been said and written on Lake Superior ores, giving the impression that the quality of the ore is deteriorating in grade and that the reserve of high grade ore is rapidly being depleted. Average analyses of ore produced in this district since 1902 show that the average quality has been practically uniform since 1910, and now closely approximates the average for the total reserves of merchantable ore.The accompanying tables and charts show the average analyses for the past ten years, weighted according to tonnage: The chart above shows graphically the average natural iron content for the old range, Mesabi, and grand total Lake Superior ore shipments since 1902.During the last ten years the decrease in iron content for shipments from all ranges except the Menominee was only' .05 of 1 per cent, while for the Menominee ores there was an increase of .052 of 1 per cent. These tabulations and the chart prove that the average quality of the total annual production of iron ore from the Lake Superior district is uniform. Mining men of the district know that all of the merchantable ores of every ore body are being mined out cleanly, and therefore the present average iron ore content of total annual shipments from the district may be expected to continue as long as the present merchantable ore reserves last. There is no logical reason to expect a decrease in the average iron content. Furnaces require ore of definite quality, and if this quality of ore cannot be produced from the natural ore bodies, it must be produced by mechanical means—that is, by concentration of low grade ores or iron formation."

In the extractive industry the term ‘continuous improvement’ (CI) usually means procurement of the latest state of the art equipment. This is generally perceived as the only way to add further value to the supply chain, with the driving philosophy of increased tonnage to dilute operational costs. However, not all market places can facilitate this approach. RJB lives in a fiercely competitive market and has targeted the standard efficiency drivers of rationalisation and stock management with a vengeance; and also operate CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System), RCM (Routine Condition Monitoring)and CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) methodologies. Ultimately though, these systems are only as good as the people who operate and manage them and to add further value without procurement, people must be re-introduced back into the operation. Through TPM (Total Productive Mining), that is what RJB have set out to do.

From the most remote periods of civilization, stone Las been used to perpetuate the memory of individuals or to immortalize their noble achievements. Ancient memorials ranged from simple piles of stone (cairns) or single markers to great obelisks and pyramid or magnificent mausoleums. The Taj Mahal at Agra, India, built of white marble by Shah Jehan in memory of the Empress Mumtaz Mahal, is one of the most beautiful and costly memorials ever built. It was erected between 1632 and 1050 at a cost estimated at a: high as $50,000,000, and it is today an object of unusual attraction for travelers. Other magnificent memorials, both ancient and modern, are to be found in many lands. Memorials of varying design have characterized the passing centuries and have found an important place in the New World. In early days, monuments were chiefly imported into America, but gradually an extensive memorial stone-manufacturing industry developed on this side of the Atlantic. Sales value of domestic memorials, f.o.b. quarry or mill, attained a maximum of $17,488,755 in 1920, and retail sales, of course, reached a much higher figure. Modest markers and tombstones are to be found in almost every rural community in the United States, and there are many elaborate and costly monuments in and near urban centers.

The idea of burning blast-furnace gases directly in gas-engines, instead of under steam-boilers, as had previously been done, was first put into practice barely ten years ago, almost simultaneously in Great Britain, Germany and Belgium. The pioneers of this movement made their first experiments with small engines. After these experiments had given satisfactory results, and it had been shown that the thermal value of the poor blast-furnace gases, in spite of defective scrubbing, could with safety be directly transformed into mechanical work in the gas-engine, there very soon arose a considerable demand for gas-engines of large power, similar to the large steam-engines employed in metallurgical works. In face of these sudden requirements, the gas-engine builders were placed in a difficult position; for up to that time the gas-motor was considered as suitable for small engines only, and it was generally believed that the limit of size had been attained with 100 to 150 effective h.p. in a single cylinder. Manufacturers of gas-motors, however, did not underrate the advantages offered by this new field for their manufactures, and it so happened that in Germany the Berlin-Anhaltische Masch-inenbau-Gesellschaft, of Dessau, was the first to undertake the construction of a 600-h.p. two-cycle gas-engine, with two cylinders of the Oechelhauser-Junkers type, for the Hoerder Mining & Smelting Company. The engine was started in 1898, and, with a few improvements and alterations, is still working satisfactorily. This engine worked with astonishingly high effciency, considering the period. Les sujets suivants sont touchés : le fonçage du puits, le développement des niveaux, la méthode d?exploitation, la manutention de la roche brisée, le méthode de remblayage et la ventilation. En résumé : le fonçage du puits s?est fait sur 2,240 mètres de novembre 1995 à mars 2000. Le développement des niveaux a débuté en octobre 1998. Les opérations de minage ont débutés en août 99 dans le premier horizon situé au dessus du niveau 122. Les chantiers sont exploités par longs-trous d?environ 25 mètres de long avec un diamètre de 10 cm. Les accès à la zone minéralisée sont transverses. Le minerai est soutiré des chantiers et acheminé au passe-minerai a l?aide de chargeuses navettes. Par la suite, le minerai passe sur un marteau, est concassé et transporté sur un convoyeur, jusqu?au silo de 4,500 tonnes au-dessus de la station de chargement automatisée du niveau 152 d?ou les skips sont alimentés. Le remblai en pâte est envoyé de la surface par des trous ayant un revêtement d?acier. Le diamètre intérieur est de 15 cm. Le réseau de ventilation est principalement alimentée par des ventilateurs de surface (système aspirant et souflant) conçus pour acheminer sous-terre un maximum de 640 mètres cubes par minutes (1,350,000 pcm).

"Increasing labour costs, the trend to larger mills, the processing of lower grade ores and a diminishing sup-ply of well-trained and experienced mill operators contribute to the necessity of automating a grinding circuit. With sophisticated process control techniques, supervision of the mill line is reduced to an occasional inspection by the shift supervisor. Process operating decisions and/or adjustments are quickly and accurately performed by the electronic devices to be described. When the variables in the grinding circuit are stabilized using the sensors and controllers as discussed, the over-all grinding circuit is maintained at its optimum grinding load level, with ample protection against under-and overloading."
