"Four sulphide minerals - pyrite (FeS2), pyrrhotite (Fe1-xS), pentlandite ([Ni,Fe]9S8), and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2) - contain the base metals and most of the iron in concentrates of platinum group metals (PGMs). In the pyrometallurgical processing of PGM concentrates these sulphides form a matte during smelting, and iron and sulphur are removed from the matte during the converting process. This paper discusses the roasting of Merensky concentrate in air before smelting, with the purpose of reducing the matte load to the converter.Roasting tests were conducted in a bench-scale rotary kiln at temperatures from 350°C to 700°C. The concentrate tested contained 17.4% sulphur and consisted of 23% pyrrhotite, 16% pentlandite, 11% chalcopyrite, and 2% pyrite. The particles were fine (d50 = 22 µm), and all the sulphide particles were liberated. Roasting in air at 550°C and 650°C for 20 minutes removed respectively 60% and 70% of the sulphur. The iron in the sulphides was oxidized to Fe3O4 (magnetite) at temperatures below 500°C and to Fe2O3 (haematite) at temperatures above 550°C. At 700°C the bed sintered and copper oxides formed. At temperatures below 450°C oxidation was incomplete: pyrrhotite remained and only 30% of the sulphur was removed. Smelting tests were conducted to assess matte fall and the deportment of copper and nickel to matte. It was evident that roasting resulted in lower matte falls (a drop of approximately 60%) compared with matte falls from unroasted concentrate. The iron and sulphur levels in the matte were reduced to below 3.5% and 22% respectively.This paper also briefly describes the mechanisms by which pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite, and pentlandite are oxidized during roasting. For chalcopyrite, the mechanism proceeds through an intermediate solid solution phase, which extends from Cu1.02Fe1.04S2 to Cu2.04Fe0.72S2 to a copper-rich solid solution of bornite (Cu4Fe1.4S4-Cu2S). The oxidation of pentlandite proceeds through a monosulphide solid solution (Ni0.39Fe0.53S-Ni0.74Fe0.15S) to a solid solution of heazlewoodite ([Ni,Fe]3}xS2). These mechanisms are explored in relation to chemical thermodynamics and microstructures."

The project has shown that it is feasible for a junior company to reopen a narrow vein-style gold mine and successfully take it into production. An intimate understanding of the mineralisation and a flexible approach to mining are crucial, as are stringent cost control and efforts to keep overheads low. The project has confirmed the geological complexity of the Main Lodes, which consist of highly sheared quartz-sulphide infill in strongly sericitised granodiorite. The existence of discrete high-grade zones within the Hangingwall Lodes has also been confirmed. Broad low-grade zones continue to be recognised and require the local application of bulk longhole mining methods. The initial mine plan called for predominantly longhole stoping, but adverse ground conditions have meant that a switch to air-leg mining has produced higher run-of-mine grades. The excess capacity at the processing plant can best be used by batch processing, with its reduced maintenance requirements

The value of nonfuel raw mineral production in the United States for 1977 increased over that of 1976 by 5%, from $16.7 billion to $17.5 billion. Metals declined by 5% from $6.1 billion to $5.8 billion, chiefly because of strikes in the iron ore industry and a depressed copper market. Subsidization of mining industries in some foreign countries accounted in part for the excess of copper and some other metals on world markets. Weak metal markets and continued slowdowns in the world economy were the main reasons of the virtual absence of new mine projects. Increasing domestic governmental involvement affecting mineral industry activities, such as pricing controls, public land withdrawals, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, effective August 3, continued to be controversial and to be criticized by various segments of the industry.

Mobile roof supports are shield-type support units mounted on crawler tracks. Mobile roof support (MRS) units are used during retreat mining, and they eliminate the setting of roadway, turn, and crosscut breaker posts which are required during pillar recovery operations. Mobiles are a more effective ground support than timbers, and their usage enhance the safety of section personnel and reduces material handling injuries. MRS usage is rapidly increasing, and approximately 40 U.S. coal mines have successfully employed this relatively new technology. This paper is in response to increasing requests from operators, State and Federal Regulatory Agencies, and others on the practical aspects of MRS usage in underground coal mines. During this investigation, nearly half of the U.S. mines which have utilized mobiles were visited. This report depicts the more common pillar extraction methods which operators have found successful. The Christmas tree and outside lift methods are illustrated and discussed. Roof control plans that do not require breaker posts or allow pillar extraction with fewer than four mobiles are also examined. In addition, operators' experiences with setting pressures, loads, and rates of loading during pillar extraction are addressed. Mining and support strategies to more effectively control hillseams, weak roof, and gob overrides which have entrapped equipment are also discussed.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), U.S. Department of Labor, did a linear analysis for a new underground coal mine in Grant County, WV, through the interpretation of LANDSAT imagery and high-altitude, color-infrared aerial photography, to identify areas of potentially unstable roof in advance of mining. The Bureau of Mines included this mine in its ongoing study of the correlation between geologic features and linears. Three years after the analysis, after mining had progressed through the plotted linears, a cooperative Bureau-MSHA study evaluated the effectiveness of the linear plot in predicting areas of unstable roof and defined the geology associated with the linears. Adverse roof conditions at this mine include roof falls, potted-out roof, water inflow, and local areas requiring supplemental support. At the time of this study, 34 pct of the mine workings were within 200 ft of a plotted linear. Fifty percent of the adverse roof area in the mine occurred within this area. The primary geologic anomaly associated with the linears is an increased frequency of jointing. The majority of the plotted linears coincide with the prominent joint orientations. Additional features observed in the linear zones include roof rolls and a sandstone channel that cuts into the coal seam.

Quantitative seismology is an important tool for investigating mineinduced seismicity and the quantification of the seismic rock mass response. The spatio-temporal interpretation of seismic data within an ever-changing three-dimensional mining environment provides some challenges to the interpretation of the rock mass response. A grid-based approach for the interpretation of spatial variation of the rock mass response provides some benefits compared with approaches based on spatial filters. This paper discusses a grid-based interpretation of seismic data. The basic methods employed in the evaluation of the parameter values through space are discussed and examples of applications to different mine sites given.

To maximise recovery by highwall mining, pillars must be designed which are long, slender and of relatively low width-to-height ratios. The strength of pillars with width/height less than 2 depends primarily on the mechanical response of the coal, due to the reduced influence of frictional restraint between roof and floor. A suitable pillar design approach therefore requires a method of estimating coal-seam properties. Experimental studies were carried out to determine ways of reliably predicting the large-scale mechanical properties of coal seams from small-scale test data. The studies led to a method of practical, systematic assessment of coal-seam properties based on measurement of coal rank and seam brightness profiles. The criterion employs the parameters sigma(c), m and s of the generalised Hoek-Brown empirical strength criterion for rock masses. A novel design approach combines the flexibility of modern numerical modelling programs with simple hand calculation for rapid assessment

INTRODUCTION A mine's power system represents the driving force behind all of the extraction and auxiliary operations, because the production and transportation of mined material and the operation of equipment, such as fans and pumps, are all dependent upon a power source. Once, compressed air was the primary power source in mining; today, however, electrical power dominates. This chapter reviews the basic theories of com- pressed-air and electrical power and provides several examples of applications in mine power systems. COMPRESSED-AIR POWER General Compressed air has been, and should continue to be, an important source of power in mining operations. It has been used as a means of blasting coal in conventional mining and is widely used to operate stopers, mucking machines, and other air tools in both coal and hard-rock mines. Such applications demonstrate the suitability of compressed air for applications requiring linear motion, but it is also utilized for its reliability and safety. A compressed-air system is composed of a compressor, a receiver, a distribution network, and the air-operated machines. A compressor takes in air at normal atmospheric pressure (free air) and compresses it to a higher discharge pressure. The discharge pressure must be high enough to overcome the friction in the distribution system of pipes and hoses and deliver the compressed air to the machines at the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. The most common type of compressor used in mines is the reciprocating compressor in which the air is compressed by a piston in a cylinder. An air receiver is a container or storage tank that is located in the distribution system between the compressor and the machines. It stores compressed air, when the full capacity of the compressor is not being used, and gives a more steady flow of air to the machines. The distribution network consists of pipes, Oalves, elbows, tees, and hoses that transmit the compressed air from the receiver to the machines in the mine. It is essential that the distribution system be designed with the proper sizes and lengths of pipe, hose, and other components to keep pressure losses well within allowable limits. The air-operated machines consist primarily of drifters, stopers, pluggers (sinkers), slushers, and several other pieces of equipment. Compressor Operation Every compressor is made up of one or more basic elements; a single element, or a group of elements in parallel, comprises a single-stage compressor. Many compression problems involve conditions beyond the practical capability of a single compression stage. Too great a compression ratio (absolute discharge pressure divided by absolute intake pressure) may cause excessive discharge temperatures or other design problems. It, therefore, may become necessary to combine elements or groups of elements in series to form a multi- stage unit, in which there will be two or more steps of compression. The number of stages commonly used in reciprocating compressors is as follows: Pressure Number of stages 0- 150 pig 1 80- 500 psig 2 500-2500 psig 3 2500-5000 psig 4 When pressure is referred to as pounds per square inch gage (psig), it means the pressure (in pounds per square inch) above barometric pressure as measured by a gage. The sum of barometric pressure and gage pressure is the absolute pressure (in pounds per square inch). The gas is frequently cooled between stages to reduce the temperature and volume entering the subsequent stages, thereby reducing the work required for compression. The basic reciprocating compression element is a single cylinder compressing on only one side of the piston (single-acting). A unit compressing on both sides of the piston (double-acting) consists of two basic single-acting elements operating in parallel in one casing. The reciprocating compressor uses automatic spring-loaded valves that open only when the proper differential pressure exists across the valves. Intake valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly below the intake pressure. Discharge valves open when the pressure in the cylinder is slightly above the discharge pressure. "Shovel buckets, scraper blades, dipper teeth, mine car wheels and hammermills are examples of equipment which require routine maintenance due to abrasion. Service life can be extended by the use 0/hard/acing and buildup materials. Mining and milling applications are described and field welding procedures discussed.A high-stress abrasion test used to select hard/acing and buildup materials/or hammers in a hammermill is described in detail. Field tests of the selected alloys confirmed their performance, and maintenance records showed a significant saving in down time and cost.The relationship between the abrasion resistance of the alloys and their hardness, work hardening, composition and microstructure is summarized. IntroductionLarge volumes of ore are handled daily by the mining industry. The abrasive nature of most ores results in extensive wear to both handling and processing equipment. If such wear is neglected it may cause lost production time and also, in extreme cases, require the complete replacement of expensive equipment. The well-planned maintenance of components subject to abrasive wear by means of buildup materials and hard facing can result in substantial economic benefits. Such benefits can , however, only be realized through the correct choice of welding process, consumables and deposition methods available to maintenance personnel. Hardfacing MethodsHardfacing is applied by a variety of methods; the three most widely used being arc welding, oxyfuel gas and thermal spraying. Table 1 summarizes the major processes used within each method. Filler metals in the form of rod, wire or powder are necessary to fulfill the individual requirements of each process. The filler rods are available in the cast form or, in the case of ductile metals or alloys, as wrought rod or tube. All types are supplied bare or flux covered. Wire is supplied in two forms, drawn flux cored and drawn solid. Powder filler metals are available in many metals or alloys; they may be simple mechanical mixtures or prefused and atomized alloys made to a specific size range and shape for optimum results for each applicable process."

Developing the Generation IV nuclear reactor is an international collaborative effort. One of the most promising Gen IV nuclear reactor designs is the supercritical water (SCW) concept, in which the water coolant runs at about 625 oC at the outlet. Under this temperature and high pressure condition, the cooling water is at supercritical state, which poses significant demand for both in-core and out of core materials. High-temperature mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and radiation damage are some of the key challenges. At present, no single commercial material can meet all the requirements of the severe SCWR conditions. Corrosion experiments per-formed under SCW condition yield various kind of corrosion modes, some are very challenging to characterize using conventional techniques. A combination of various advanced characterization techniques proofed to be essential to understand the root cause of materials? degradation.

The first crush pillars on the Bushveld platinum mines were introduced at Union Section in 1978. Before the introduction of crush pillars, serious problems were experienced when stoping advanced to a point 30 m to 40 m on both sides of the centre gully. At least three to four stopes were collapsing per month. The introduction of the pillars stopped the stope collapses in the mining area where they were introduced. The residual stresses of these pillars were never measured; however, the successful elimination of the ?back-break? problem suggests that the original pillars had a residual strength of at least 8 MPa. Apart from back analyses, very little work has been done to determine the residual strength of crush pillars and only very recently have any measurements been made. The lack of knowledge in this field has resulted in pillars being designed based on experience. Concerns about stope collapses, similar to the Coalbrook disaster, have led to larger pillars being cut in more recent times. If such pillars were cut in brittle quartzites they would always fail violently but the ductile nature of the Merensky Reef generally allows large pillars to fail without bursting. Occasionally, however, one would burst in a working area. Increased incidence of bursting has been reported on some mines at deeper levels but most of these bursts occur in the back areas. Nevertheless, the incidence of bursting increases the risk of falls of ground in already dangerous areas, and the larger pillars decrease the extraction ratio. This paper describes the evaluation of stress measurements conducted in two boreholes over a crush pillar with dimensions 2.5 m x4.0 m, and a height of 1.2 m. Boussinesq equations for vertical and shear stress were used to analyse the original measurements and provide a stress profile across the pillar as well as the residual strength of the pillar. The results showed an unexpectedly high peak stress of 280 MPa at the centre of the pillar and a residual strength of 48 MPa. The reason for the high residual strength is suspected to be the result of the stiff environment under which the pillar failed and the small height of the siding on the up-dip edge of the pillar. More measurements should be conducted on several mines to establish a range of residual strengths for narrow crush pillars.

In mining and quarrying operations, electric motors can fail for a variety of reasons. Some failures are directly linked to demanding production requirements and contaminant-laden environments and, consequently, are difficult to prevent. A sizeable number, however, are caused by ?offline? factors that have nothing to do with production. These include inadequate or substandard motor repair practices and improper motor shipping, storage and installation. The fact that failures are at times attributable to repair- or rebuild-related errors and problems raises the stakes when selecting an electric motor repair provider. Teaming with high-quality electric motor shops can help a company reduce failures due to offline factors, improving motor reliability and cutting downtime costs. Regardless of location or annual revenues, the best motor shops have similar business cultures and share many of the same characteristics.

"A 28-year study of cross folds leads to the conclusion that the northwest-southeast folds recognized in many areas of North America are part of a regional pattern. Detailed examination of over 650 geological maps and reports of Ontario indicates that this folding can be traced across the province. Evidence is presented that this fold pattern played an important part in determining the pattern and scale of intrusion, that its recognition in the field can aid in defining stratigraphy, folding and faulting, and that it may have played an important role in channeling hydrothermal or magmatic mineralization. IntroductionThe concept of regional cross folding in Ontario is not new. W.H. Gross (1955) discussed regional cross folds in the Archean of Northwestern Ontario, and A.M. Goodwin (1961) referred to regional cross folds in the Archean of Ontario and Quebec. However, the interpretation in this paper is new.The writer saw a cross fold for the first time, underground, at Little Long Lac Gold Mines in Geraldton, Ontario, in 1951. This recalled the ""transverse folds"" on E.R. Faribault's classical maps of Nova Scotia, published by the Geological Survey around the turn of the century; M.E. Hurst's cross fold(s) at Timmins, Ontario (Figure I); and the cross folds mapped by A.W. Jolliffe in the Yellowknife area of the Northwest Territories. All these mapped cross folds had one thing in common with the fold at Little Long Lac: A northwest-southeast axial trend. Were such cross folds of purely local extent, or might they be indicative of a widespread regional fold pattern? If so, has such folding any significance for mineral exploration or potential?By 1959, based on a study of about 1000 Canadian geological maps and reports, including 291 in Ontario, the writer reached the conclusion that cross folding trending northwest-southeast is so widespread as to constitute a pattern of folding, and that such cross folding should produce changes in plunge along pre-existing greenstone fold belts."

In the commercial annealing of cartridge brass there are four points regarding which definite data are essential. They have to do with the correct interpretation of grain count in its relation to annealing temperature and, incidentally, to Brinell hardness. These points are: 1. The comparison of the grain sizes of two cartridge-brass mixtures: 69 copper, 31 zinc, 0.376-in. (9.5-mm.) gage; and 68 copper, 32 zinc, 0.130-in. (3.3-mm.) gage 2. The comparison of the grain sizes of annealed metal that had previously been reduced by rolling varying amounts; for instance, 20.0, 36.6, 50.9, and 59.1 per cent. 3. The determination of standards for grain sizes on annealed brass of the composition 68 per cent. copper, 32 per cent. zinc and 69 copper, 31 zinc. 4. The comparison of grain size with Brinell hardness on identical samples of annealed metal. In their comprehensive and thorough investigation of the recrystal-lization of cold-worked alpha brass on annealing,l Mathewson and Phillips have discussed the relations between temperature of anneal, degree of deformation, and structural alteration in alpha brass. They have also shown certain comparisons between the ordinary physical properties and the grain size of annealed brass. The purpose of the present investigation is mainly concerned with the grain size of cartridge brass, its relation to Brinell hardness, and the publication of sufficient data to enable those engaged in the inspection of such material to have a correct foundation upon which to work. The first alloy was taken from regular mill stock that had been rolled from 0.580 in. to 0.376 in. (14.7 mm. to 9.5 mm.) gage, a reduction of 35.1 per cent. This bar (No. 1) had the following composition: Copper, 69.20 per cent.; zinc, 30.76 per cent.; lead, 0.02 per cent.; iron, 0.02 per cent. The second alloy was also taken from mill stock of 0.325 in. (8.25 mm.) gage and was rolled as shown in Table 1, in order to get four bars reduced two, four, six, and eight B. & 5. numbers respectively. This second alloy

THE ore treated is almost pure copper pyrites (chalcopyrite) in a gangue of quartz and quartz-felsite. Very little free iron sulphide (pyrite) occurs, and at the time of the erection of the flotation plant the stopes in the oxidized zone had been almostentirely depleted. This zone only extends to a shallow depth, and, below the l00-ft. level, the sulphide for the most part is clean and bright but in the crushed and brecciated parts of the ore channel, where surface water has circulated freely, the gangue is decomposed and kaolinized, and the copper sulphide badly tarnished. This class of ore gave considerable trouble at the mill, but unfortunately, was very limited in quantity. A sample of rich ore assayed-Copper, 21.2 %; iron, 24:.3 %; silica, 28.9 %; sulphur, 25.1%.The concentration in the original mill was effected by handpicking, jigging, and tabling. A considerable portion of the copper mineral arrives at the surface in the form of large lumps of very pure quality, eminently suitable for sorting out by hand.The rich ore is tipped over a grizzly at the shaft bins; the oversize hand-picked, and the undersize bagged direct.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the application of a diffusion model to sintering rate data developed for lithium titanium ferrite. The data were obtained by sintering pressed pellets under identical conditions for various times up to 11 hours. Stereological measurements were made on polished sections, and sintering rates were calculated. A model for intermediate stage sintering was fitted to the stereological data. This procedure produced a method by which these type data could be used to study the relative importance of volume and grain-boundary diffusion under a variety of sintering conditions.

The Bulli Seam, New South Wales, comprises medium to low volatile bituminous coal, generally of coking quality. It is worked over an area embracing 300 square miles.Variations in several factors are found.1. The seam is somewhat disturbed and dissected by various structural features.2. This structure, and present topography, have resulted in depths of cover from very shallow to approaching 2,000 ft in the presently worked areas.3. Wide variations of seam thickness occur.4. Gradations of rank occur from place to place.5. Variations in seam gas content and wide variations in seam gas composition are experienced.6. Variations in coal strength occur.These factors may contribute to the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena in mining exploitation.INTRODUCTIONThe Bulli Seam, the most extensively worked seam in Australia, is the uppermost seam of the Illawarra Coal Measures, which comprise the southern portion of the Sydney Coal Basin. Generally, the rank of the seam and its assemblage of types make it ideal for the production of hard metallurgical coke. The thickness and relatively flat dips render the seam suited to mechanized bord and pillar mining, and this method is used almost without exception. At the north-eastern corner of the field, stress and gas phenomena have occurred during mining.Various data have been assembled on physical, chemical and geological conditions of the seam which may influence the occurrence of stress and gas phenomena. This material is presented in an attempt to explain the location of such phenomena to date, and to enable variations in conditions to be considered when future possibilities are being assessed.

Theories of ore genesis. have both practical and philosophical application-practical in that they influence our search for new ore bodies; philosophical in that they provide a test for our theories of petrogenesis-and our ingenuity.For example, the theory of granitization requires an explanation of ore genesis compatible with the general concepts of granitization.Our understanding of some processes of ore formation, such as supergene enrichment, or the formation of residual lateritic iron ores, is so complete as to permit of nq controversy.For other ores, like the oolitic iron ores of England and France, and elsewhere, or the segregations of chromite or ilmenite in basic igneous rocks, the broad principles are generally agreed on; dispute is limited to details of process.But for a wide range of ore deposits there is no such agreement. Completely incompatible hypotheses are advanced to explain' identical facts, and we have difficulty in finding new facts or criteria that will distinguish unambiguously between them.In thinking about such ores, a co:n;venient starting point is provided by Schneiderhohn's (1953) fourfold division of ore deposits:1. The secondary hydrothermal ore deposits occurring in Mesozoic-Neozoic cover strata of Europe.2. The "regenerated" younger ore deposits in Alpine type mountain chains.3. Post-Cambrian primary hydrothermal ore deposits.4. Ore deposits of the PreCambrian shields.To these we may add a fifth group:5. Stratigraphically controlled sulphide deposits.

The Gippsland Basin in south-eastern Australia has an area of approximately 46 000 sq km. It is one of the world's major coal and petroleum bearing basins, with most of the former occurring in the smaller one fifth on-shore part. The stratigraphy, structure and economic resources of the Tertiary sedimentary pile is now well known through extensive drilling for coal and petroleum. In contrast, the older Cretaceous sequences through their lesser economic importance are relatively less explored. The sedimentational history of the Gippsland Basin has largely followed along similar lines of development to the many other southern Australian basins since the Cretaceous break-up of Gondwanaland. However, the scale of accumulation of coal and hydrocarbon source rocks is unprecedented and differentiates this basin, for reasons less well understood, from the others. Large scale open cut brown coal mining since the late-1920s has been carried out in the western extremities of the basin, while vigorous extraction of some two thirds of Australian petroleum products taken place in the offshore part. Brown coal seam thicknesses and economically winnable reserves are huge and outrank most other brown coal basins of the world. Development of the resource currently meets the need for electricity generation throughout the State of Victoria, but other future developments such as conversion to oil, being investigated.
