Lower greenschist quartzo-feldspathic schists within the N-S trending Earnslaw Synform of the Upper Wakatipu area are pervaded by late-stage quartz filled extensional and extensional shear fractures, with quartz-scheelite lodes infilling normal faults. Exposed veins/lodes mapped over at least 1000 km2 define a paleoflow system developed during late metamorphic exhumation of the schist. Both veins and lodes have consistent angular relationships to the schist foliation independent of their location on the Earnslaw synform. Unfolding the synform leads to a regional subhorizontal foliation and a systematic set of subvertical quartz veins striking NNW extending over a depth interval >5 km, striking parallel to a set of normal faults hosting the quartz-scheelite lodes. The structures define an extensional regime with s1 sub-vertical, s3 oriented WSW-ENE, a low differential stress, and suprahydrostatic fluid pressures.   The quartz-scheelite lodes (<2 m thick) occupy faults which cross-cut the quartz veins, and are traceable for a few hundred metres, at most. The lodes consist of laminated and/or massive quartz, slivers of crushed and folded schist, random and discontinuous lenses of scheelite with clay selvages separating the lode from relatively undisturbed wallrock schist. Textural evidence suggests that slip developed incrementally with total displacement on faults during lode formation on the order of a few ten's of metres.   The distribution of Glenorchy veins demonstrates broad scale hydrothermal flow through low-permeability schist, channelled within dilatant mesh style structures comprising interconnected shear and extension fractures. Flow through the lodes was likely derived from the greater surrounding area via the interlinked network of fractures and focused into the low displacement shears. Available evidence suggests the system developed together in a uniform extensional stress regime toward the bottom half of the seismogenic regime.

"Toxic fumes cause fatal andnonfatal incidents in underground mining, where the working environment tends to trap the fumes, hindering the restoration of non-harmful conditions. Workers can underestimate the residual fume toxicity and return to the work site too quickly. The toxic fumes from charge explosions depend upon a number things: formulation ingredients, mixture uniformity, water resistance, hole contaminates, rock hardness, and dust interactions. Transitory hole-to-hole waves can cause partial desensitization, ruin the reaction kinetics, and worsen the fume toxicity.Traditionally the toxic fume hazard for a candidate explosive is resolved from a requisite tally of fume components. The resolution starts with the fume spectrum, a tabulation of specie concentrations, transformed to standard reference conditions and readjusted to remove the air dilution. The resultant influence, which is referred to as relative fume toxicity RFT, is deduced by a formula rule with some chosen constants and the requisite concentrations. The RFT result is normally compared to an RFT criterion that represents the worst-case (maximum) tolerable fume toxicity, as stipulated by regulations or otherwise."

The technical excellence of separation achieved in a mineral concentration process, or any other process where two constituents of any kind are physically separated from each other, is expressed uniquely and quantitatively by the separation efficiency (E,): E. = (R - R,), where R is the percentage of the valuable constituent and R, the percentage of the waste appearing in the concentrate. The separation efficiency meets all the usual requirements of a true efficiency and is independent of the nature of the process used. It can be visualized as the percentage of the feed material that, in effect, actually undergoes complete separation while the rest of the feed is distributed randomly and unchanged into the two separation products. The problem of quantitatively assessing the results of a mineral concentration process recurs whenever one tries to decide which of two similar test results is more desirable. Although economic factors may greatly influence the eventual choice of process, they usually have very little to do with the technical excellence of a separation and are, therefore, not a consideration at this point. Concentrate grade and recovery, used simultaneously are the most widely accepted measures of performance, and if both the grade and the recovery are greater for one case than for another, the choice is simple. However, when the results of closely competitive operations are compared, it often occurs that one set of test results shows a higher grade and a lower recovery than another and the choice is no longer obvious. Laboratory investigations of a mineral concentration process applied to a given feed material can often be designed to yield successive paired values of concentrate grade and recovery over the practical range of the course of a separation process.' These results may be plotted as some combination of the cumulative values of grade, weight recovery, or unit recovery in the concentrate. The resulting correlations for two slightly different sets of conditions can then be compared qualitatively, or even quantitatively in particular cases.2 Such comparisons are not applicable, however, to individual concentration test results. The reduction of a separation test result to a single efficiency figure, preferably as a percentage of ideality, would afford the simplest and most precise means for comparing the results of competitive tests. The effective proportion of feed material that undergoes complete separation in any real concentration process, hereafter referred to as "separation efficiency," is such a figure. It is essily calculated from the usual feed and product data and can even be evaluated, in many cases, from data in publications describing various concentration processes. Mineral Concentration Processes and Their Evaluation Mineral Concentration Processes: The overall concentration process may be subdivided into a liberation process which severs the bonds between unlike mineral species, and a separation process, which sorts the resulting liberated particles into two products—a concentrate rich in mineral A and a tailing lean in mineral A. A perfect mineral concentration process is represented by the idealized scheme shown in Fig. 1 in which liberation and separation are not differentiated. The feed mixture consists of two mineral types which are completely liberated early in the process and then sorted by type. Mine seals can he remotely constructed in underground coal mines through vertical boreholes when direct access to a fire is impossible or considered to he too dangerous. This method has great merit because the boreholes can be drilled to specific mine areas, and the seals can be positioned close to a fire zone. The technology however can be largely ineffective if the constructed seals do not provide of effective barriers to airflow or if they cannot he used to impound water and other inert materials. Unfortunately, no viable alternatives exists to sealing the entire mine to the ground surface. Full-scale remote mine seal construction research is being conducted at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Lake Lynn Laboratory (LLL). Under this effort. Howard Concrete Pumping Company and GAI Consultants Inc. have joined forces to evaluate a potentially significant improvement to the current state of the art. This paper covers the development o f novel technology or rewrote mine seal construction, the evaluation of rite materials used, the construction practice and the Fellow-up testing.

Open cut mining of the Black Rock chalcocite ore started in 1963. A ground movement monitoring programme was commencing in the early stages of mining when signs of instabilityof the western wall became apparent. Eventually 100.000 cu vd, of overburden Were removed beyond the rim of the western wall in an attempt to stabilize the slope. Subsequent decpenlug and mining till the final batter angle of 45 resulted in deterioration and mining was stopped 38 ft short in the ulltimte design deplh of 520 ft.Investigations showed that the geology of the western wall , was a major factor in the instability of this wall. A block jointed model was made 10 illustrate some of the pehomena observed. "Abstract: 1 Sophia Spoortunnel Marco Ziller, Trevi S.p.A.:For the construction of 14 cross passages connecting the twin tunnels of the Sophiaspoortunnel the Artificial Ground Freezing technique was applied as temporary soil improvement. AGF by Brine and Liquid Nitrogen was implemented. Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil during the freezing intervention in order to control the behaviour and the efficacy of the treatment.IntroductionThe Sophia rail tunnel is a bored tunnel with a length of 4.24 km, comprising two separate parallel tubes with an outside diameter of 9.45 m. The twin tunnels were excavated by a TBM equipped with hydroshield. Seven service shafts, approximately 30 m deep, were constructed in between the tunnels. From each shaft two cross passages were constructed connecting the shaft with both tubes, for a total of 14 cross passages.The Artificial Ground Freezing technique utilizing both the Brine and Liquid Nitrogen methods was used for temporary waterproofing and soil support to allow the excavation of the cross passages. The natural soil to be frozen was consisting in loose sand and clay under a hydrostatic pressure up to 250 kPa.For the measurement of the ground temperature. Automatic data acquisition and recording systems were installed to monitor the variation of the temperatures in the soil and at the contact with the tunnel lining. Furthermore, a comprehensive computerized system of sensors and cryogenic valves was designed and implemented in order to manage the whole Nitrogen process.Soil Main CharacteristicsThe soil stratigraphy is generally consisting in Clay (Holocene) from ground level to -15 m depth, followed by Pleistocenic Sand, from -15 to -25 m, and Clay below -25 m."

ERP systems have been widely implemented nowadays in several industries. However, ERP was originally designed to fit former MRP and MRP II users, and most of the ERP research has been focused on discrete manufacturing . On the other hand, process industries ? and mining in particular ? present many peculiar characteristics, which are difficult to comply with ERP systems standard functionalities. Again, very limited research has been developed covering enterprise management systems in mining. The objective of this paper is to identify, through an explanatory study that includes a case study methodology, how ERP systems manage the functional areas of the mining industry, and how they fit into the mineral value chain IT requirements. A secondary objective is to identify the gaps between ERP?s functional capabilities and the mining industry business requirements, and to point out the perceived benefits they generate to the companies.

Manganese-bearing deposits f the Leadville, Colo., district are of two distinct types. Manganosiderite, a combined or intimately mixed ferrous and manganous carbonate, occurs in unaltered zones as the predominant mineral. From 50 feet below the surface to as deep as 900 feet, psilomelane and wad, both black manganese oxide minerals, are found in intimate contact with hematite and limonite. A typical analysis of the black oxide ore shows 20.08 percent Fe, 18.64 percent Mn, 15.91 percent insoluble, 14.91 percent moisture, 0.94 percent Zn, and 2.13 percent Pb. A considerable tonnage of the oxide ore has been mined for production of spiegeleisen and for other purposes.

This paper details the approach adopted to upgrade the current metallurgical facilities at both the Driefontein and Kloof Gold Mines in the Republic of South Africa. Goldfields Ltd operates eight metallurgical plants within South Africa of which three have recently been upgraded to replace the older technology previously installed, with modern equipment. This upgrade was undertaken with a view to improving extraction efficiencies and to reduce operating costs. The upgrade was undertaken in a phased approach with the first phase focused on the replacement of the filtration/zinc precipitation processes with modern pumpcell carbon-in-pulp technology. Included in this upgrade phase was the installation of an automated hands-free electrowinning cell, which represents the first commercial application of its kind in the industry. The second phase of the upgrade entailed replacement of the multiple comminution stages previously installed with large SAG and SAG/Ball mill combinations. Due to the rapid return on these projects, a fast-track approach was adopted which necessitated the purchase of available good conditioned second-hand mills from both within South Africa as well as in Australia. Goldfields Ltd is a large mining house with gold mining operations in South Africa, Australia and Ghana. A well advanced PGM exploration project is underway in Finland- Arctic Platinum.

The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selective was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of excessive amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords- Sulphide ores, Flotation, Flotation depressant, Mineralogy.

The definition of an ore handling system and its consequent layout design is of crucial importance in cave mining projects. It not only represents the main driver in the production capacity and reliability of the mining system, it is also a fundamental variable in the footprint’s development time and cost.In recent decades, load-haul-dump (LHD) tramming distance optimisation through the allocation of several orepasses inside the footprint has been the most common practice in ore handling system layout definition at Codelco’s operations. Today, the improvement of existing technology, such as higher-capacity LHDs and jaw-gyratory crushers, and intensive preconditioning techniques to improve fragmentation allow the conceptualisation of simple and highly productive ore handling system layouts for wide caving areas that avoid the complexity and high cost of developing numerous orepasses inside the footprint.The initial macroblocks of the Chuquicamata underground mine project (PMCHS) consider an ore handling system layout in which LHDs dump into orepasses located inside the footprint area. The ore is then transferred into crusher chambers located below the production level, where it is crushed by jaw crushers and then conveyed to surface. In an effort to reduce development time and costs, a new ore handling system layout for the PMCHS experimental macroblocks was engineered using improved technologies and techniques in a simpler mining system. "Mill feed materials that are not run-of-mine ore are often a challenge for mineral processors and tend to accumulate in stockpiles, where they remain unprocessed for many years and become “slow moving inventories”. During a complete re-evaluation of the Clarabelle Mill operation (38,000 ton/day capacity) in 2000, it was concluded that there was an opportunity to assemble a 5,000 ton/day custom circuit to treat such stockpiles in the equipment that remained available during regularly scheduled maintenance shut-downs.This project was part of the larger Mill Redesign Project and involved testing the intended flowsheet under a number of operating scenarios for the first material to be treated: spent refractory bricks. The laboratory focus was on how to maximize returns using the available equipment and reagents.The circuit was successfully commissioned in the fall of 2000. As the brick stockpile was depleted, other potential feeds were evaluated at the laboratory, as well as in the new custom circuit itself. Processing of the spent refractory brick has yielded a significant contribution to the profitability of INCO. Significant opportunities lie ahead for generating more value from other slow moving inventories.INTRODUCTIONIntegrated mining operations tend to have slow moving inventories along the path from the mines to the finished products. Spent refractory bricks from furnaces and converters and furnace bottoms are materials that often end up in long-tern stockpiles. Such stockpiles are a challenge, although they represent small tonnages on an annual basis, because they are unique materials, which cannot be readily brought into the process at a rate anywhere near that at which they are produced, due to the high contents of deleterious components such as chromite or magnesia. Accumulation over years will eventually yield a metal inventory worthy of consideration given the right opportunity, such as availability of spare equipment or peak metal prices."

The portal, which is the near-horizontal, surface point of entry to an underground excavation, can often be an exceedingly difficult area in terms of ground control. Surface and subsurface failures at portals, as discerned during a study involving over 300 case histories, are unfortunately, common. To aid in the engineering evaluation of portals, the Geomechanics Classification System was appended with discontinuity orientation assessment values and support/excavation guidelines. Also, a design model utilizing RMR predicted rock loads in conjunction with half-dome theory is proposed for the most common type of portal failure. Other pertinent comments and recommendations relating to portal stability are included.

At Brunswick Mine, an increase in the number of seismically-related falls of ground and in particular rockbursts occurred during 1999. This was due to the ever-increasing stress levels in the remaining ore reserves, mining in difficult highly stressed areas and in particular troublesome geological features. In conjunction with the Noranda Technology Centre, development of rockburst support systems started at the Brunswick Mine in 1996 and efforts were accelerated in 1999. A support package consisting of #6 gauge chain link mesh, #0 gauge heavy mesh straps, and a 1 m by 1 m pattern of modified conebolts was developed. The conebolts were modified to enable mixing of the resin anchoring. Two major rockbursts occurred during an intense seismic episode at the Brunswick Mine from October 13th to 17th , 2000.The area was evacuated approximately four hours before the first burst hit, and remained closed during the seismic ?flurry??. The first damaging activity occurred around midnight on Friday the 13th, and a second damaging episode occurred on the 17th that included a local Richter Magnitude 2.7 event. The second rockburst had dimensions of approximately 5 m by 5 m by 20 m or 2150 tonnes of massive sulphide material (density 4300 kg/m3). The first failure area was more extensive, caving approximately six metres of an intersection back with the lateral extent not safely measurable. This paper briefly describes the mining conditions that led to the bursting, the seismic response of the region, the mechanisms thought to have caused the bursts, and a yielding support system which had been partially installed before the burst.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.

"*Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc (Mining Engineering) degreeSynopsisLiqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) has been experiencing problems with boulders after blasting where the fragment sizes exceed the maximum of 800 mm as per mine standard. As a result, the mine has employed various methods to improve the fragmentation. The goal is to produce a run-of-mine (ROM) feed that does not choke the crusher and cause delays in production. In order to achieve this goal, fragmentation distribution within the fines and coarse envelope must be optimized through effective planning of blasting activities and accurate execution.The mine determined the fines-coarse envelope within which the entire crushing system can handle fragments using Split Desktop software. It is expected that both the predicted and actual fragmentation curves lie within that envelope for optimal fragmentation. The Kuz-Ram model with blast design parameters of 2.6 m for burden, 2.8 m for spacing, and 127 mm hole diameter was used to predict the fragmentation. The results show that the blast design parameters may need altering to achieve optimum fragmentation. Furthermore, the execution of the drilling and blasting may be the cause of the fragmentation problems. The mean fragmentation size (X50) differs greatly, unlike the uniformity index (n)s values which are relatively close to each other (0.6 to 2.2). The mean squared error (MSE) values have a large range. A proposed solution is a modified burden, spacing, and hole diameter. It is concluded that blast design parameters need to be reviewed in order to obtain correct predictions. IntroductionFragmentation has an impact on the mine production cycle which comprises, inter alia, drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, and crushing. Correct fragmentation as set by the plant design is important as it reduces the time lost due to secondary blasting and/or loading difficulties. In this paper we analyse blast results at Liqhobong Mining Development Company (LMDC) in Lesotho for a period of six months. This project was undertaken to observe the trends from the blasts and to identify whether any discrepancies exist in the overall blast information. The period under study included 16 blasts."

AH pilot and commercial plants working with Mesabi Range taconite employ wet magnetic separation. Progress is being made with a dry magnetic process, but this has not yet been applied to taconite except in the laboratory and pilot plants. Flowsheets in all five plants are similar, including multiple stages of grinding, each followed by magnetic separation, which rejects a finished tailing. The flowsheet in Fig. 1 is used in the preliminary and commercial plants of the Erie and Reserve mining companies and in Unit C of Oliver's Pilotac plant. At Erie the desliming operation is omitted. In the Reserve plants two ball mills are used with each rod mill. Pilotac uses flowsheet 2 in Unit A-B and has also tested flowsheet 3. Principal differences in the three flowsheets are the number of grinding stages and the type of roughing. The terms open-circuit roughing and closed-circuit roughing are best defined by the diagrams. Special Test Data Given in Table I: For the Erie and Reserve commercial plants, Table I reflects routine conditions. Pilotac, the experimental plant, has been run with several flowsheets, including those followed at Erie and Reserve's commercial operations.
