A multiyear, comprehensive study of flotation reagents used in phosphate beneficiation was conducted. The study involved the evaluation of pure fatty acid compounds, comparison of various anionic collectors and testing of iso-acids. Various C12 to C22 fatty acids were tested as Florida phosphate collectors. The saturated fatty acids were found to be very poor collectors when using the standard conditioning procedure, whereas the unsaturated C16 to C22 fatty acids showed fair to good phosphate collecting ability. The C18 fatty acids oleic, impure oleic and linoleic and the C20 eicosenoic acid were shown to be the best phosphate collectors. The best flotation results were obtained using Liqro GA tall oil and oleic acid. Four isostearic/iso oleic acid type fatty acid collectors were compared with a commercial grade oleic acid and with Liqro GA tall oil as phosphate collectors using standard laboratory conditioning and flotation procedures. The most selective collector evaluated was Century 1108, a high isostearic acid-type reagent. However, it was concluded that this excellent-performing reagent was too expensive for commercial use. Overall, the most promising reagent was probably Century MO-5. This collector is essentially an iso-oleic acid/stearic acid mixture (not isostearic acid), and it costs much less. This program laid a sound foundation for developing single collector, all anionic flotation processes.

Within certain limits, the fertility of a worn-out soil may be restored, deforested areas can be replanted, one year's wasted water-supply is followed by another; but coal and ores, once taken out, cannot be mined again, and should therefore be conserved with especial care. This means, however, not that mining should be restricted, but that it should be done most economically and with the minimum of waste.

The kinetics on the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was studied by use of series piezoelectric quartz crystal ( SPQC ). Arsenic ioninhibits the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, which is consistent with the previous results by other measuring method. This further demonstrates that the SPQC can monitor the chemical activity of the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Cupric ion accelerates the growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The mechanism was discussed, it was considered that copper promotes the protein enzyme of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, rustic yanin, to form over the range of cupric ion concentration studied. There action order of cupric ion in accelerating the bacterial growth is 0.067. The growth of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans is dependent on temperature, the apparent reaction activation energy decreases from25.56 kJ / mol to 18.32 kJ / mol because of the addition of 10 mg / L Cu(II) to the bacterial growth solution of pH 2.0 at initial inoculum of 10%.

Attempts are made to evaluate the feasibility of using a water-injection cyclone for the concentration of iron ore fines. The separation characteristics of clay fines, containing large amounts of alumina and silica, from the iron values are discussed. The effects of critical variables, such as injection water rate, truncated cone diameter, spigot opening and vortex finder diameter, on the performance of a water-injection cyclone in terms of iron, alumina and silica grades; iron recoveries; and alumina and silica rejections are discussed. A set of 16 full-factorial experiments (24) was carried out to gain an understanding of the individual and interaction effects of the variables. The results indicate that classifying iron ore fines containing 63.0% iron, 2.5% alumina and 3.5% silica through a water-injection cyclone can produce concentrates with iron grades greater than 66.0% and alumina and silica contents less than 1.5% and 2.0%, respectively, at different study conditions. The achievable iron recovery values are greater than 88%, and alumina and silica rejections are more than 80% and 50%, respectively, within the specific study conditions. While the truncated cone diameter, injection water rate and spigot diameter influences the alumina rejection to a considerable extent, it is mostly influenced by the vortex finder diameter. The iron recovery and silica rejection values are mostly influenced by spigot diameter and truncated cone diameter. The effect of injection water on the concentration characteristics depend on the prevalent truncated cone diameter and spigot diameter conditions.

A thermochemical model is developed to study the two-stage smelting reduction process for ironmaking without post-combustion. Steady-state multi-material and heat balance equations are solved simultaneously to study the effect of metallisation, slag basicity, coal rank and heat loss on consumption rates of coal, ore, flux and oxygen and production rate of slag to produce hot metal of a given composition, tapped at a given temperature. The model is applied to the commercial data for a COREX-plant producing a wide range of hot metal compositions, tapped at different temperatures. The computed rates of coal, slag, flux, ore and oxygen were found to be close to the reported ones, but an exact match could not be obtained. It is found that a four per cent change in metallisation brings changes the coal rate by five per cent, flux rate by six per cent, slag rate by eight per cent and oxygen rate by 13 per cent, while a ten per cent change in basicity changes the coal rate by ten per cent, flux rate by 13 per cent and oxygen rate by 22 per cent. Further, it is found that an increase in metallisation decreases the coal rate and export gas. At a given per cent metallisation, the coal rate and the export gas are lowest for anthracite compared to all other types of coal.

Rock blasting in the project of “Site Formation and Associated Infrastructure Works at Choi Wan Road and Jordan Valley” is the largest urban blasting project in the history of Hong Kong and also is rare in the world. More than 6.2 million of in-situ rock has to be excavated by blasting. The site is located in the center area of eastern Kowloon peninsula, surrounded by highways, registered cut slopes, high-rise residential buildings, MTR subways and the public utilities. The complex situations bring great difficulties and risks to the blasting works. A bird-view photo of the site is shown on Picture 1.

A fundamental study of fragment size distribution and characteristics of fracture pattern is presented for the dynamic penetration of a conical bit into coal block. In this paper, damaged zones during crater formation and fragment size distribution were studied. Bit with a sharper tip angle and a smooth body configuration performed better penetration. Results suggest that in coal cutting the trend should be toward the face cleat direction using a sharper angled tip bits which consumes less energy for an optimum range of penetration depths, thus attaining maximum cutting efficiency and reducing fine fragments.

This paper presents experimental evidence that supports the use of bromine/bromide as a potential alternative to conventional cyanidation for gold leaching. The study evaluated a brominebased lixiviant, Stabilized Bromine, with considerably lower vapour pressure than liquid bromine. Using a rotating device, the rate of gold dissolution was determined at various concentrations of this reagent. The reactivity of pure pyrite, arsenopyrite and chalcopyrite minerals was also evaluated in stabilized bromine reagent. Furthermore, bromine leaching of gold in a number of gold bearing ores was undertaken. Results showed that significantly higher gold recovery can be achieved with bromine than with cyanide when leaching gold encapsulated in sulphides, but bromine consumption was high owing to simultaneous oxidation of the sulphides. The greatest promise for the bromine leach process was with oxidized gold ores. The recovery of gold from oxide ores with bromine was comparable to that achievable with cyanide and bromine consumption was reasonable when leaching was conducted at a near neutral pH of ~6. In the case of oxidized gold ores containing copper mineralization, it is possible that bromine consumption may be lower than cyanide consumption, since there is evidence to suggest that bromine is less reactive than cyanide with copper minerals.

Deposits of low-grade iron ores containing abundant goethite are distributed across the world. A common difficulty associated with beneficiating goethitic-rich ores is the poor liberation characteristics of the iron-bearing minerals which often contain finely disseminated gangue minerals such as kaolinite, gibbsite and quartz. Microwave-assisted heating has been proposed as an effective way of inducing dehydroxylation and associated mineral transformations in order to beneficiate low-grade goethitic ores. In this research, the mineral transformations occurring in a low-grade goethite-rich sample using microwave radiation was studied. Roasting conditions (up to 1000°C and under various CO/CO2 gas atmospheres) were designed to generate a magnetic product from a goethite-rich, reject waste stream sample sourced from an iron ore processing site in the Pilbara, Western Australia. Conditions (T, pO2) for transforming the raw material from hydrated goethite to hematite and eventually to magnetite are presented. Chemical and mineralogical characterisation of the raw material and roast products were conducted using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy techniques to identify the mineralogical and chemical changes occurring during the heat treatment. Further steps are suggested to optimise the microwave-assisted magnetising roasting and correlate it with the application of magnetic separation techniques to maximise the efficiency of upgrading the iron content in low-grade iron ores.CITATION:Nunna, V, Hapugoda, S and Pownceby, M I, 2017. "Slime coating is a recognized challenge in fine particle flotation, not only in decreasing recovery, but also in reducing the selectivity and hence froth quality. In this presentation, a novel method based on electrophoretic mobility distribution measurement to study slime coatings is described. By measuring electrophoretic mobility distribution of individual minerals and their mixtures, the interactions between these minerals can be evaluated.For illustrative purposes, a model system of fine coals, or oil sands with two different types of fine clays was studied. Flotation tests showed a significant decrease in coal (bitumen) flotation recovery with montmorillonite but not with kaolinite clay addition. When electrophoretic mobility distribution of a fine coal/montmorillonite clay mixture was measured, a single modal zeta potential distribution was obtained, in contrast to a bimodal distribution for fine coalkaolinite clay mixture. This finding suggests a stronger adhesion of montmorillonite than kaolinite clays on fine coal surfaces. In the case of bitumen, the bimodal zeta potential distribution was measured for the mixture of bitumen emulsion and kaolinite or montmorillonite, indicating a weak attraction of the clays by bitumen. In the presence of calcium, however, a single modal zeta potential distribution was obtained in the mixture of bitumen emulsion with montmorillonite but not kaolinite clays. These findings are in excellent agreement with bitumen flotation results, demonstrating that the electrophoretic distribution measurement is a powerful tool to study slime coating phenomenon in a complex fine particle flotation system."

"This paper was prepared for presentation at the 16th Canadian Mineral Processor's Annual Meeting, Ottawa, Ontario, Jan. 17 to Jan. 19, 1984.This paper gives an account of the development of treatment procedures for the differential flotation of refractory copper-zinc ores. Special references are made to the effectiveness of various zinc depressants and their combinations.Studies carried out on refractory copper-zinc ores demonstrated that conventional zinc depressants such as cyanide and zinc sulphate were not particularly effective when secondary copper minerals were present in the ore; the flotation activity of sphalerite was enhanced in the presence of cyanide.Among the various zinc depressants evaluated, the following depressant combinations were found most effective: Zn(OH) 2-S02 , 802-CaO, Na2S-Na2S03-S02, Na 2 S-S02 and Na 2S-S0rDS22.The practical application of any of these systems depends on the type of ore treated and other conditions such as pH, levels and points of collector and depressant additions.In this paper the effect of each depressant combination on different ores is described with reference to the selection of collectors."

An investigation was carried out to determine whether a numerical model could be constructed that would produce results that realistically represent actual ground deformations in and around a vertical shaft. The ground deformation was brought about by the partial extraction of the shaft pillar. A special characteristic of the rock masses, affected by the shaft pillar extraction, was that the shaft was located in poor quality rock masses. After the extraction of a portion of the shaft pillar, excessive deformations occurred at the shaft/reef intersection. Therefore, a decision was taken to extract the entire shaft pillar protecting the shaft by a proposed waste-cut across the shaft. The effects of stress and displacement on the shaft were investigated by using inelastic numerical modelling in different stages. A calibrated numerical model was constructed producing modelled results comparable to the actual displacements along the shaft. Des recherches ont été poursuivies pour déterminer si on pouvait construire un modèle numérique qui donnerait des résultats représentant avec réalisme les déformations réelles du terrain à l’intérieur et autour d’un puits vertical. La déformation du terrain était entraînée par l’extraction partielle du massif de protection. Une caractéristique spéciale des masses rocheuses, affectées par l’extraction du massif de protection, était que le puits était situé dans des masses rocheuses de qualité inférieure. Après l’extraction d’une portion du massif de protection, des déformations excessives se sont produites à l’intersection du puits avec le filon. Par conséquent, la décision a été prise d’extraire le massif de protection en entier par une coupe de déblais à travers le puits. Les effets de contraintes et décalage furent étudiés en utilisant une modélisation numérique inélastique à des stages différents. Un modèle numérique calibré fut construit, donnant des résultats modelés comparables aux décalages réels le long du puits. Eine Untersuchung wurde durchgeführt um festzustellen, ob ein numerisches Modell konstruiert werden könnte, das Resultate produzieren würde, welche realistisch aktuelle Bodendeformationen in und um einen vertikale Schacht darstellen. Die Bodendeformation resultierte teilweise aus der Extraktion des Schachtpfeiler. Eine spezielle Eigenschaft der Gesteinsmassen, beeinflußt durch die Schachtpfeilerextraktion, war, daß der Schacht in Gesteinsmassen geringer Qualität situiert war. Nach der Extraktion eines Teils der Schachtpfeiler, traten übermäßige Deformationen am Schacht/Riff Kreuzungspunkt auf. Folglich wurde die Entscheidung getroffen, die gesamten Schachtpfosten zu extrahieren und den Schacht mittels eines geplanten Verlustschnittes quer zum Schacht zu schützen. Die Auswirkungen des Druckes und der Versetzung auf den Schacht wurden unter Anwendung unelastischer numerischer Modelle in unterschiedlichen Stadien untersucht. Ein kalibriertes numerisches Modell wurde konstruiert, welches berechenete Ergebnisse mit den tatsächlichen Versetzungen entlang des Schachtes vergleicht.

High concentrations of airborne coal particles is the main reason leading to health and safety hazards in underground coalmines. Water spray is one of the effective methods to suppress coal particles in mine sites, but the use of plain water is not effective enough to capture coal particles. By adding surfactants, coal wettability can be improved which will increase the coal dust suppression efficiency. In this study, a modified sink test was employed to evaluate coal wettability in the presence of two anionic surfactants: sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). Sink rates were calculated by measuring sink weight over test time. Different surfactant concentrations (0.01 per cent, 0.05 per cent, 0.1 per cent, 0.2 per cent and 0.4 per cent) and two types of water (tap water and deionised water) were selected to investigate coal wettability over three size ranges (0–38, 53–75 and 75–90 µm). The results show that both SDS and SDBS surfactants can lower the water surface tension and improve coal wetting performance. Sink rates increased as the surfactant concentration increased, and surfactant solutions prepared by tap water performed better than deionised water in enhancing coal wettability. Also, coal wettability varied for different coal particle sizes; the smaller coal particles were, the worse the wettability they possessed.CITATION:Chen, Y, Xu, G, Wang, R and Albijanic, B, 2017. Study on Desulfurisation and Deashing for Medium-High Sulfur Coal Using Shaking Table As important coal resources, medium- high sulfur accounts for a significant part of the coal reserve in China. The environmental regulations and fuel standard requires sulfur and ash to be removed before it is used, so as to save energy and decrease the emission. Therefore, the effective desulfurisation and deashing technologies are urgent needed. However, due to the local characteristics of the coal, specific technology with optimum operation parameters is required to develop for different local coal. Qinglong is a district of Guizhou Province, which has large medium to high sulfur contained coal reserve. In this paper, medium-high sulfur coal is sampled from Qinglong, Guizhou province. Some basic characteristics such as the mineralogical composition of the coal rock, the monomer existing state and the granulometric composition are determined by X-ray diffraction quantitative analysis and polarisation microscope analysis respectively. Adopting the classified feed method, shaking table tests show that the feed pulp concentration is 20 per cent, the stroke is 13mm, the frequency of the stroke is 380 per min, the cross slope is 3¦ and the volume of wash water is 5.2 L per min. Under such condition, aggregate processed coal yield is 72.87 per cent and sulfur content decrease to 1.31 per cent With shaking table technology of 'First stage rough and intermediate further fine benefication', the yield of concentrate coal increased from 72.87 per cent to 81.21 per cent, while the sulfur content reduced to 1.35 per cent.
