"INTRODUCTION The United States production of tin has always been negligible, and domestic requirements have been met almost entirely by imports. The advent of war in Europe in 1939 brought a threat to our foreign source of supply, and steps were taken by Congress to forestall shortages of tin and other metals. By authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, passed by Congress in 1939, the Bureau of Mines and Geological Survey conducted investigations of domestic tin deposits.An examination of Alaska deposits was undertaken in 1940 and 1941 by J. B. Mertie, Jr., and Robert R. Coats of the Geological Survey.H. B. Heide conducted a preliminary examination of lode and placer-tin deposits at Cape Mountain in 1942, which was followed in 1943 and 1944 by a program of exploration by churn drilling in the placer area and trenching and sampling the lode deposits.Placer tin, found at the head of Goodwin Gulch, Cape Creek, First Chance Creek, and Boulder Creek, indicates that the mineral was derived from the vicinity of lode cassiterite occurrences on Cape Mountain. Placer tin led to the discovery of at least one, cassiterite vein by the Geological Survey and the Bureau of Mines."

"INTRODUCTION The veins of the Clark Fork district have been mined on a small scale since 1913. In May 1943, the district was examined by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines with a view to possible exploration for larger ore deposits that might be of value to the war effort. The area adjacent to the Hope, Whitedelf, and Lawrence mines was re-examined 4/ December 27, 1943. As a result, the Bureau of Mines started exploratory operations in the district during the summer of 1944 which was continued until the late spring of 1946. This report presents the data obtained from the investigation.ACKNOWLEDGEMENTSIn its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The manganese deposits of the Drum Mountain area were investigated as two separate projects. The first was begun in November 1940 and completed in August 1941, and the second began in January 1945 and ended in May of the same year. The first project was initiated as part of the Bureau of Mines program for development of strategic minerals for national defense. Subsequent operations disclosed conditions somewhat different than were expected, and it was decided that additional drilling should be done to delimit the ore bearing horizons further.The more promising manganese deposits in the Drum Mountains are situated on properties known as the Staats manganese mine and the Pratt manganese mine. The property controlled by the Pratt interests is under lease to the Ward Leasing Co. The 1941 project investigated the deposits on both properties, whereas the 1945 project was planned to explore further the oxidized ore bodies of the Pratt mine, although one hole was drilled in an attempt to extend the carbonate ore body on the Staats property (fig. 1).ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. "INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines began a broad program of exploration of various proportion in the Pine Creek area of the Coeur d'Alene mining region in the fall of 1943. As a part of this project, exploring was done at theLittle Pittsburg property in 1945. The work included driving a 500-foot crosscut from the No, 6 level and drilling four diamond core drill holes to test the behavior of the Little Pittsburg vein at depth. "INTRODUCTION Geological examination of the Iron Mountain beryllium deposits was begun by a field part 3/ of the Federal Geological Survey in May 1942. Later in that month the occurrence was examined by the author and C. H. Johnson, of the Bureau of Mines, and a preliminary exploratory program was outlined. Trenching and sampling began about June 15 and were completed in July 1942. A large tonnage of beryllium-bearing material was indicate by this preliminary survey, so that additional funds wore allotted for further trenching and sampling, underground exploratory work, and diamond drilling. "INTRODUCTION The Lookout Mountain coal deposits were examined by J.L. Stratton, an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in April and May 1943. The area investigated includes that part of southern Lookout Mountain in townships 4 to 8, south, ranges-9 to 11 east, and contains approximately 140 square miles in DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in northeastern Alabama (fig. 1.)Six coal seams having a minable thickness of 18 or more inches are represented in the area. The third seam, known locally as the Hill seam, has been correlated with the Upper Cliff No.1 seam and is referred to as such throughout this report. The preliminary investigation indicated that the Upper Cliff No. 1 seam is a low-volatile, high-grade coking coal. The work done on this project was confined principally to determining the amount and grade of coal in this seam.The only existing maps of mines in the area were one of the Lookout Fuel Co. at Lahusage, Ala. (fig. 2), and one of the Lookout Mountain Iron Co. at Battelle, Ala. (fig. 3), Consequently, to gain some knowledge of the grade and tonnage mined, surveys of the other mines were necessary. Many of them were caved, and many were filled with water, necessitating considerable preliminary work."

"SUMMARYDuring December 1945, the Bureau of Mines began churn drilling the Winchester zinc deposit, 11 miles south of Joplin in Newton County, Mo. The deposit lies in a virgin area northwest of the Seneca fault. It is one of several deposits partly proven by drilling but never developed.Logs of 28 privately drilled holes had indicated a substantial tonnage without delimiting the deposit. It appeared that additional drilling might increase this reserve sufficiently to justify mining. A, total of 6,33 feet of churn drilling was completed in 17 holes drilled by the Bureau of Mines. Twelve of the holes penetrated minable ore extending the length of the known deposit and materially increasing its estimated tonnage.INTRODUCTIONDuring May 1943, the Winchester property in Newton County, was visited by an engineer 3/ of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by Dr. A. N. Winchester, owner, and Charles Keith, lessee of the property. At the request and with the assistance of these gentlemen, examination of the property was undertaken. Logs of 28 churn-drill holes were collected, hole locations were surveyed, and available historical data were obtained. It was concluded that although existing drill holes indicated considerable reserves, additional drilling might increase the tonnage substantially. In addition, it was believed that better knowledge of this ore deposit could be obtained by drilling further, and this knowledge could, in turn, be applied to other less proven deposits in the same field."

"INTRODUCTION Deposits of iron ore in Cherokee County, Tex., have been worked at various times in the pact, and the ore has been smelted in small local blast furnaces.Recently it was proposed to establish a charcoal blast furnace with a wood distillation plant to produce charcoal for fuel and byproducts. Financial assistance from the Reconstruction Finance Corporation was sought by George Easley and associates to enable them to purchase, move, and erect the furnace and build the required accessory plants. The furnace was to be moved from Pembroke, Fla.In August 1941, the Bureau of Mines was asked by the Office of Production Management to check the development work of Easley and associates and to ascertain (1) the iron-ore reserves, (2) the cost of mining ore and delivering it to the blast furnace, and (3) the grade and character of the ore. The Bureau of Mines was advised, while the investigation was in progress, that approximately 1,000,000 long tons of measured reserves would be sufficient to demonstrate the feasibility of operating the properties.Although deposits of iron ore are widely distributed in Cherokee County, only the Pryor Mountain, Banks and Cherokee, J. P. Acker, and Citizens State Bank tracts were sampled thoroughly by the Bureau of Mines. The iron-ore rights on these are owned by the New Birmingham Development Co., the Cherokee Development Co., or by individuals. Options to lease the ore rights were obtained by Easley, who obtained options on the Hawes Peach Orchard and Bradford tracts, also, which were examined only cursorily by the Bureau."

"INTRODUCTION The Copper Flat area of the Central mining district, Grant County, N. Mex., has been visited by numerous engineers 4/ of the Bureau of Mines and geologists 5/ of the Federal Geological Survey. In December 1944 the Bureau. 6/ proposed that geophysical work be done in that area in order to locate favorable sites for future company exploratory and development work. This geo-physical work was begun early in 1945 but never fully completed because of insufficient funds. The engineers who made the survey recommended that more work be done, especially to locate the bottom of the Copper Flat laccolith by resistivity-depth surveys. All known minable zinc-lead ore bodies had been found above this laccolith in the Copper Flat mine, but it was thought that other minable ore deposits should occur in favorable limestones beneath it. The geophysicists also recommended core drilling beneath the laccolith.In the summer of 1946, following some mapping by S. G. Lasky of the Federal Geological Survey, funds were appropriated for a Bureau of Mines project in the Copper Flat area. The project was completed in June 1947. 8/"

"INTRODUCTION Red-iron-ore deposits in northeast Alabama have been exploited at vari¬ous times for nearly 6o years. About 3-1/2 million tons of ore have been produced in the Gadsden district; but mining activity has been dormant since 1926, and furnaces within this section of the State now suffer a shortage of red ore.To alleviate these shortages, work by-the Bureau of Mines was recommended after preliminary investigations. 4/5/ Diamond drilling, to determine the lateral and vertical extent of ores of known deposits in Greasy Cove and on Shinbone Ridge, was done from August 1946 to May 1947, as Project 9-106, Alabama Red Iron Ore. "INTRODUCTION At 9:12 a. m. on April 16, 1947, the ammonium nitrate cargo in hold 4 of the S. S. Grandcamp, a 7,176 gross-ton Liberty ship owned by the French Government, detonated at pier 0 of the Texas City Terminal Railway Co., Texas City, Galveston County, Tex.This detonation was the first of a series of explosions and fires that took the lives of approximately 600 persons, injured 3,000 other persons, and caused a property damage and business loss that will exceed $58,800,000. It has been estimated that the life, accident, and workmen's compensation insurance loss will be $8,200,000.At 1:10 a. m. on April 17, 1947, the ammonium nitrate cargo in hold 5 of the S.S. High Flyer, a 6,214-gross-ton Liberty ship owned and operated by the Lykes Bros. Steamship Co., Inc., detonated at pier L. This explosion materially increased the property damage caused by the first explosion, in between 50 and 100 persons, and is believed to have taken the life of only one person.The exact number of casualties resulting from the Texas City disaster may never be known. On June 22, 1947, 65 days after the explosions, the red Cross and the Texas Department of Public safety repoted:,""Identified dead, 405; unidentified dead, 63; believed missing, 100; injured, 3,000; hospital¬ized, 600; still in hospitals, 37."""

The report of work accomplished on the United States Bureau of Mines' bauxite project in Pulaski and Saline Counties, Ark., is presented in this volume and in a series of Reports of Investigations immediately following this volume. This first volume covers the project as a whole, whereas the subsequent volumes contain maps of local areas and deposits developed, together with logs of the drill holes and descriptions of the separate deposits. The Arkansas bauxite project was initiated in December 1941 and continued for 4 years. The first 5 months were spent in studying the problems presented and in geophysical exploration, Core drilling began in May 1942 and ended in May 1945. The project was one of the larger and more important of those undertaken by the Bureau of Mines for the purpose of developing domestic sources of supply of critical and strategic minerals necessary for National defense and for the successful waging of modern mechanized warfare. Some of the results of the Bureau's bauxite exploratory work have been made available to the public through the medium of press releases, transactions of technical societies, and government publications. More information has been supplied to government agencies upon request and to land owners and mine operators of the deposits concerned in the form of maps showing locations of all holes drilled on the property and logs with chemical analyses of' all cores recovered. In October 1946, the factual data were made avail-able to .the public in manuscript form in an-"open file" at the office of the State geologist, R. B. Foxhall, Little Rock, Ark., and at the office of the. Bureau of Mines in Washington. For the purpose of providing a background for the presentation of the factual data obtained, the history of bauxite is reviewed briefly. Information relative to past production and reserves of bauxite in Arkansas also is given. A resume of the development of the industry in Arkansas, the exploration and mining methods employed, the various uses to which the bauxite is put, and a brief outline of the geology of bauxite in Arkansas complete the -background.

A general description of the activities and results of bauxite investigation by the Bureau of Mines at its bauxite project in Saline and Pulaski Counties, Ark., has been given in Report of Investigations 4251. The factual data obtained during the project are reported in a series of Reports of Investigations, of which this is the seventh. The data are accompanied by maps showing the location of holes drilled and the deposits developed. Each area upon which work was done is reported by half townships. Each bauxite deposit investigated was assigned a name and a number for ready reference and identification, and its location and name are shown on the appropriate half-township map. The description of each half township is followed by a description of each deposit developed in that half township. The 14 half-township maps and 77 detail maps of the bauxite deposits in , this series of reports give the locations and numbers of all the holes drilled on the project, except the deep holes drilled to test the geophysical anomalies. The locations of those holes are shown on figure 13 in volume 1. The descriptions of the deposits developed are followed by complete detailed logs of the drill holes. Many of the widely spaced exploratory holes did not discover bauxite of .1 minable thickness and grade. The pertinent information obtained from the widely spaced exploratory drill holes has been summarized and tabulated, and a table for each half township is given with the discussion covering that area.

This report presents analyses of crude oil from most of the fields in the United States producing 2,500 barrels per day or more. The purpose of the report is threefold : 1) To present detailed analyses of crude-oil samples from as many al possible of the important fields in the United States. On January 1, 1947, there were 340 fields producing 2,500 barrels & day or more. Analyses for 283 of these fie1ds are presented. Fifty-seven fields have been omitted because the Bureau of Mines did not have analyses or the crude oils being produced. As one sample was not representative of the promotion from several of the fields, two analyses are given for each field of this kind. (2) To compile these analyses, many of which have not been published previously in a single report. Since the publication of Bulletin 291 in 1928, there has been no report showing analyses of crude petroleum from fields throughout the United states, but a number of separate reports according to area or state have been issued. Many of these are out of print. (3) To provide a means of ready comparison of the properties of crude oils from different areas of the United states.

As a part of a wartime program to aid in the development of known ore bodies and in the discovery of hitherto unknown deposits of strategic minerals, the Bureau of Mines investigated the feasibility of diamond-drilling the Christmas copper deposit, in Gila County, Ariz., to increase the reserves of milling ore. Upon recommendation of the examining engineer, drilling was begun in September 1942, from the bottom (770) level of the mine. One month later, in cooperation with the Bureau, the Federal Geological Survey started geologic mapping of the mine workings. Since extensive and costly development would be required, the War Production Board concluded that ore below the bottom level could not be mined at that time because of the wartime shortages of equipment and man-power. In January 1943, drilling was moved to the 300 and 400 levels to locate reserves readily accessible for continued production of fluxing ore. This drilling, which was under the supervision of L. G. Marshall, was completed in January 1944.

The Lake Creek gas-condensate field, Montgomery County, Tex., Was discovered early in 1941 by the Superior Oil Co. The field, shown in figure 1, is approximately 37 miles northwest of Houston, Tex., about 11 miles north of the Tomball, and 10 miles west of the Conroe oil fields. The field is on the downthrown side of a pronounced fault zone, and the general structure is anticlinal, with the long axis trending northeast and southwest. Production is obtained from multiple sandstone reservoirs in the Wilcox group of Eocene age between the approximate depths of 8,820 and 11,840 feet below the surface of the ground.

The Metallurgical Branch of the Bureau of Mines, as a part of its duties under the Organic Act, works to prevent wastes in industry and to disuse inmate information on the fundamentals of metallurgical processes. During the war, the necessity of large production was increasingly emphasized. Such duties necessitate from time to time the study of units of full commercial size, the operation of which is beyond the facilities of the Branch. When developments have reached this stage; work has been continued in cooperative agreements with operating companies that have been willing to contribute the use of their plants and staffs and to allow the publication of the results obtained for the common good of the industry.

During the latter part of 1943, a magnetometric survey was conducted by the Geophysical Division of the Bureau of Mines at the Mahopac magnetite mine, Putnam County, N. Y., in an endeavor to locate a segment of the ore body that reports state was cut off by a fault. The Mahopac mine was abandoned about 1895 after producing nearly 1,000,000 tons of high-grade magnetite iron ore. The results of the investigation indicate the termination of the ore body by "pinching", or a displacement of such magnitude as to place any extension at a considerable distance from the original are body. This report describes the work done on the project and presents the data obtained.

The chromite deposits along the Stillwater complex in Stillwater and Sweetgrass Counties, Mont., have at various times been studied and reported on by the Federal Geological Survey, the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, other Government agencies, and private interests, Several of the deposits were explored to a mall extent by the owners during the World War of 1914-17, but no production resulted. The importance of these deposits and the urgent necessity of developing large domestic sources of chromite were realized shortly before the beginning of the recent World War. These deposits were therefore investigated and developed by Government agencies and., as a result, now afford the largest known reserves of chromium in the United States. In 1939, under the authority of the Strategic Minerals Act, the Bureau of Mines and the Geological Survey made preliminary investigations of these deposits. As a result, the Bureau of Mines conducted an extensive program of trenching, diamond core drilling, and sampling. This work was begun in August 1939 and continued to April 1943. The Bureau of Mines also performed numerous metallurgical tests on the beneficiation of the chromite ores and concentrates and for the production of chromium metal there from. Research continues as a means toward utilizing these ores.
