Anomalous mining conditions can be described where the level of hazard is increased relative to normal conditions within a mining area. Normal conditions would be those defined as a Ground Control District in a mine’s code of practice, and for which mine standard support layouts are generally developed. It has been found that up to 80% of fall of ground accidents occur where anomalous mining conditions exists, typically in the vicinity of geological weaknesses. These areas require specific attention to ensure they are readily anticipated and identified and that appropriate strategies are used to reduce the hazards associated with them. As part of SIMRAC project GAP 607 checklists to aid identification and best practice mining methods were identified for a range of geotechnically anomalous conditions.

Gypsum is a useful industrial mineral found abundantly on the earth's crust. It is inexpensive to mine and process, and its calcined products have a wide range of readily controllable properties such as strength, density and setting time. It has proven to be such a useful material indeed, that ten American companies, operating some 57 calcining plants in 25 states in 1958, produced or imported in that year a total of 13,649,000 tons of the crude mineral valued at $39,361,000, which they then converted into manufactured products with a value of $329,070,000. Gypsum (CaSO4.2H2O) is calcium sulfate with two molecules of combined water, which are responsible for most of its useful properties. It is closely associated in most deposits with anhydrite (CaSO4), which contains no combined water and has limited commercial value in the United States. Man has long recognized the useful qualities of gypsum. It was utilized by the Egyptians in the construction of the pyramids and, later, by the Romans for important structures. Many of the ancient peoples prized gypsum for artistic and ornamental purposes, carving statuary from alabaster and making casts with plaster. The tabular variety, selenite, was used for windows, and the light transmitted through these windows reminded people of light from the moon (selene), hence the name selenite. The use of gypsum continued through the Middle Ages and into modem times. Benjamin Franklin was a famed exponent of gypsum because he applied ground gypsum to clover fields in the form of large letters which later read, in the more luxuriant growth, "land plaster used here." Gypsum is still used as an effective conditioner for some soils, but in recent decades, particularly in North America and Europe, it has become much more important as a major material for the building industry. Description Gypsum and anhydrite are closely associated minerals. Gypsum is found in a number of forms: massive rock gypsum, alabaster, selenite, satin spar, and gypsite. Anhydrite is found as massive rock or as smaller bodies or isolated crystals included in gypsum. Massive Rock Gypsum comprises most of the commercial gypsum and occurs as a sedimentary rock, interbedded in most places with shale, limestone or dolomite. This rock is soft and crystalline. Its color is white or shades of gray, pink, yellow, brown or other colors. Alabaster is a pure, compact and fine-grained variety suitable for use in sculpture or turning into artistic forms; it may be white or selected for attractive coloration. Selenite is gypsum crystallized in flat, transparent, flexible foliated plates, found in clays or in surface vugs in gypsum. Satin Spar is a fine silky fibrous variety with the axes of the crystalline fibers perpendicular to the vein or joint in which it has formed. Gypsite is an earthy mixture of gypsum with clay and sand in secondary formations; it is sometimes useful as a soil conditioner and has been used in making base-coat plasters. Pure gypsum contains 20.9 pct combined water, 46.6 pct sulfur trioxide (SO3) and 32.5 pct lime (CaO). Standard specifications (American Society for Testing Materials Designation C 22-50) read that minimum purity for material to be called gypsum is 70 pct CaSO4.2H20. The objective of this research was to develop a mathematical model for gyratory crushers to help in the prediction of energy consumption and to analyze dominant parameters that affect this energy consumption. The development of a gyratory crusher model was achieved in the following three main stages: mathematical representation and coding of the crushing process; building an amperage constant model to derive an energy-scaling formula; and modifying the amperage constant model to represent a full-scale model. Due to their significant influence on feed-size distributions, two blasting parameters, i.e., burden and spacing, were considered. The crusher parameters that affect energy consumption were also identified. A case study of an operating dolomite mine was performed. The results indicated that by changing the burden, spacing and crusher closed-side setting, the overall (blasting and crushing) costs could be reduced by 4.7% to 7.9% annually. It can also be concluded that burden and spacing values have a linear positive relationship with the crusher energy consumption, while closed-side setting values have an inverse linear relationship with the energy consumption.

Crushing has proven to be of fundamental importance in mine mill integration at Highland Valley Copper (HVC). Highland Valley Copper has achieved large throughput and good quality control through the gyratory crushers by proper blast design and better gap control. The next step, in optimizing the mine mill relationship, is evaluating the crusher liner wear and its shape influence on performance and product size reduction. To do this a laser measurement device has been developed and data is being recorded on the concave and mantle liner wear. This paper will outline the work to date and indicate specific objectives of the work.

"La mine Agnico-Eagle, localisée près de Joutel, a été découverte en 1962 par le forage d'anomalies électromagnétiques. Exploitée à partir de 1974, elle a déjà produit près de 30 tonnes d’or à partir de 2 puits, le puits Eagle et le puits Telbel, distants de 1,3 km.Le gisement est situé entre le sommet du complexe volcanique de Joutel, à dominante felsique, et la base de l'ensemble sédimentaire de la rivière Harricana. Ces deux unités ont une extension régionale; elles sont orientées NW-SE avec une polarité NE et des pendages subverticaux. Une faille majeure, la faille Harricana, passe de façon subconcordante au contact de ces deux ensembles.La minéralisation aurifère, de 2 à 5 m d’épaisseur moyenne, est liée a une zone carbonatée, comprise entre des tufs felsiques, argilites et sédiments chimiques (éponte inferieure) et des argilites carbonatées (éponte supérieure). Le minerai est constitué habituellement de 20% de fine pyrite disséminée. L’or est en fines particules associées directement à ces grains de pyrite de texture cataclastique.Deux modelés ont été for mules jusqu' a présent pour expliquer la genèse du gisement: une thèse syngenetique (Barnett et a/.1982) et une thèse épigénétique (Wyman et al. 1986). Cette dernière apparalt comme la plus probable du fait de la présence de la minéralisation dans les zones cisaillées a carbonates secondaires et pyrite cataclastique."

"La Mine Doyon est une entreprise détenue à parts égales par Cambior Inc. et par Minerais Lac Ltée qui en est l'opérateur. Les statistiques de production au 1"" janvier 1990 indiquent que, depuis le début de son exploitation (1980), 10.3 Mt de minerai d'une teneur moyenne de 5,9 g Au/t ont été usinées. Les réserves sont estimées a 10,4 Mt à une teneur moyenne de 6,6 g Au/t jusqu' à une profondeur de-450m.Trois zones minéralisées sont présentement en exploitation. Ces zones sont caractérisées par la présence de veines de quartz-pyrite accompagnées localement de chalcopyrite. Les roches encaissantes sont les schistes a séricite (zone# 1), les roches volcaniclastiques de composition felsique (zone #2) et intermédiaire (zone #2, zone ouest) ainsi que les roches intrusives appartenant au pluton de Mooshla (zone ouest). Toutes ces roches ont subi un métamorphisme régional dont l'intensité correspond à la limite supérieure du facies schiste vert ( -425°C}.Les zones minéralisées sont situées à I' intérieur des zones de déformation et d'altération les plus intenses. L'étude des structures mineures nous indique que la région a subi plusieurs épisodes de déformation ductile a fragile qui sont antérieurs, contemporains et postérieurs al a minéralisation. L'analyse structurale indique également que la déformation majeure est associée à une importante phase de compression orientée N-S a NNE-SSW.L’ensemble des observations suggère que la minéralisation et I' altération associée sont de type épigénétique. La mise en place du minerai se serait effectuée à la fin de l'épisode principal de métamorphisme et de la déformation."

Structures and serpentinization patterns in the Thetford Mines peridotites are important characteristics indicating the necessary geological conditions which led to the development of chrysotile orebodies in Early Ordovician limes. These structures and serpentinization patterns are reviewed in this paper using the geology of LAB Chrysotile orebodies as a model. Structural aspects include parallel and transverse faults, parallel and transverse granite slabs, and orebodies, some of which trend clearly north-westward parallel to the accretionarymovement. Serpentinization patterns in the peridotite belt, particularly in the harzburgite, include primary pervasive mass serpentinization and secondary complete serpentinization. Listwaenites layers appeared along some faults and along some granite slabs as a result of hydrothermal alteration of the serpentine, following the emplacement of the devonian plutons to the south. These plutons as we/1 as other important lineaments, align with the structural pattern of Thetford Mines ophiolites. It is believed that these plutons are part of a heavy magma tic corridor resembling the Pilote-Mont-Louis corridor in the Gaspe (Doyon and Berger, 1997), and the Buchans' structure in Newfoundland (Hutchinson, 1984), both intersecting the Brompton-Baie Verte line.

"Le gisement polymétallique (Cu-Zn-Au-Ag) des Mines Selbaie est forme par un réseau de filons encaisses dans une séquence de pyroclastites felsiques du sill on Harricana-Turgeon. Les minéralisations sont encaissées dans le tuf de Selbaie, situe sous une épaisse séquence d'ignimbrites Iitées. Ce gisement se distingue des autres gites archéens par une chronologie atypique des minéralisations: les veines de chalcopyrite, de sphalérite et de galène recoupent un amas exhalatifpyriteux stérile. Un vaste halo d'altération hydrothermale a chlorite et mica blanc est associe à cette minéralisation.La mise en place des veines minéralisées est associée à une phase d'extension NNW-SSE. Le complexe volcanique subit, par la suite, trois phases de déformation. Une compression, orienté N-S, développe une schistosité à peine pénétrative et un réseau de fentes de tension. Une réorientation des contraintes locales selon une direction WNW-ESE conduit au chevauchement de I' écaille d'andésite et de tonalite de Brouillan. Un réseau conjugue de failles normales cassantes est associe au relâchement des contraintes."

"Nos travaux de terrain dans le Grenville, effectués dans le cadre d'un projet d'inventaire des gîtes de wollastonite, ont démontré qu'il existe un secteur exceptionnellement favorable à l’exploration pour la wollastonite. Ce secteur s'étend de la municipalité de Grenville jusqu'au pare du Mont-Tremblant (nord de St-Jovite). D'autres secteurs favorables a 'exploration pour la wollastonite ont été délimités dans les regions du Lac-Saint-Jean, de Shawinigan et de la Gatineau. Neuf categories litho-structurales de gites de wollastonite furent identifiées. L'importance d'un système ou vert pour la formation des gîtes de hautes teneurs fut établie. Un guide de prospection pour la wollastonite propre à la province tectonique de Grenville fut développé. Plusieurs des indices sont prometteurs et mériteraient des travaux de raise en valeur afin de determiner s'ils représentent une source de wollastonite exploitable à profit. Lac-Saint-Jean, Shawinigan and Gatineau areas. Deposits may be classified into nine categories depending on their relationship to intrusive rocks, discordant or concordant contacts with the host rocks, morphology, and major structural controls. Deposits consist mainly of wollastonite, calcite and clinopyroxene. They may contain one or several of the following minerals: feldspar, scapolite, quartz, titanite sulphides, zoisite, clinozoisite, garnet, idocrase and prehnite. Wollastonite content may reach over 70%. Some deposits are associated with graphite veins. Better understanding of the geology, combined with the proposed classification provides new exploration guide for wollastonite. Several deposits have grades of economic interest. Further work is needed to determine if any of these deposits can be exploited for profit."

Waste phosphatic clay presents a difficult disposal problem and a significant loss of P2O5. Recent developments make this study on the use of phosphatic clay as a feed material for H3PO4 production worthwhile. (a) New data from Florida Industrial and Phosphate Research Institute (FIPR) suggest that the Bclay^ waste can be effectively treated by improved solid separation coupled with flotation to produce feed material for recovering additional phosphate. (b) The use of BOLI Flowsheet^ provides capability to predict performance of aqueous-based processes for a range of possible operating conditions. Using the new FIPR data and BOLI Flowsheet^ enabled the design of a new process that can potentially extend the usefulness of current P2O5 ore deposits. Predictions using OLI Flowsheet were able to identify process conditions that effectively overcome the difficulty of high Mg content of phosphatic clay. Estimated manufacturing cost in the current study lead to valuation of the P2O5 content of the phosphatic clay recovered/utilized at 60 to 70% of that of the phosphate rock feed material currently used. Phosphatic clay should be considered as a valuable material that is currently given zero value. For many years, sulfuric acid producers all over the world have been forced to meet ever more strict environmental regulations to reduce SO2 emissions. The sulfuric acid industry has implemented new solutions in order to comply with the new lower SO2 emissions target. Haldor Topsoe (Topsoe) has responded to this challenge by continuously improving the range of VK sulfuric acid catalysts and providing tailor-made catalyst solutions to meet the demands of the sulfuric acid producers for lower SO2 emissions. Reducing emissions through catalysis: requires less capital than installing a scrubber, requires no additional process chemicals, generates no waste or by-product to dispose of. In 1996 Topsoe introduced VK69, a cesium-promoted vanadium catalyst, designed for operation in the pass(es) after the intermediate absorption tower in double absorption plants. The high activity of VK69 allows for a more than 50% reduction in SO2 emissions from existing double-absorption plants. Topsoe currently has more than 110 installations of VK69. To comply with the still more stringent regulations being placed on the sulfuric acid industry to lower SO2 emissions, Topsoe has developed a new sulfuric acid catalyst designated VK-701 LEAP5™. This catalyst was introduced to the market in 2010. VK-701 LEAP5™ is based on a novel technology which circumvents the internal transport deficiencies of existing commercial sulfuric acid catalysts and thereby offers exceptionally high activity in strong, SO3 rich gases. Sulfuric acid plants have used this catalyst to meet emissions requirements lower than previously believed possible with a catalyst only solution. This paper will present examples on how to reduce emissions by implementing a tailor-made catalyst solution using VK69 and VK-701 LEAP5™.

The Embankment Place office development over the platforms of Charing Cross Railway Station in London has presented many interesting and unusual problems to the engineers involved with the project. The main structure is supported on widely-spaced columns which penetrate the station platforms and underlying vaults, calling for high capacity foundations built in severely restricted spaces. Hand-dug underreamed piles were chosen. Whilst a conventional design approach was taken to size the piles, a detailed appraisal of ground movements was made to explore the effects of the new building loads on the existing foundations, not only beyond the site perimeter but also those amongst the new foundations. Before construction of the pile proper could take place, it was necessary to sink a caisson through the upper unstable and water-bearing soils. This being identified as a high-risk item, a full-scale trial was carried out prior to embarking on the main works. The twenty-one hand-dug piles were 2.5m diameter, over 30m deep and belled out to between 4.5m and 6.6m.

Recent hotel investment projects in China often involve very tight programmes for design and construction. An example given in this paper involves a 24-storey reinforced concrete hotel tower with 460 bedrooms and a 3-level podium commercial complex. The building is supported by relatively widely spaced columns and shear walls below which 88 number large diameter piers were excavated through fill, silty and bouldery clay on to dolerite and slate at depths between 15 to 3 0m below ground level. Whereas much experience has been accumulated in Hong Kong, hand-excavated pier foundation was only adopted for the first time in Dalian. This paper describes and discusses the various factors influencing the choice of the type and design of the foundation system. The criteria for determining appropriate founding levels are then explained. During installation, revisions to the acceptance procedure were made to cater for local conditions. Emphasis is placed on the role of the geotechnical engineer in making on-site decisions during construction. The advantage of the foundation system in accommodating on-site changes resulting from local complex ground conditions is demonstrated. The pier foundations were successfully completed ahead of programme.

I would like to thank The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy for inviting us to share with you some of our experiences in the handling, storage, and transportation of industrial minerals in North America. Cometals, Inc. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Commercial Metals Company, headquartered in Dallas, a public corporation whose shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange. Sales exceed one billion dollars. Cometals, Inc. is located in New York and specializes in marketing of chemicals as well as raw materials used in the manufacture of steel, refractories, abrasives, glass and ceramics. This makes us one of the larger regular shippers of industrial minerals. Many people are aware that industrial minerals need to be viewed and judged on the merits of their chemical and physical characteristics. In addition you are surely aware that close attention must be paid to the economics of these minerals to determine the appropriate value and competitiveness of the minerals or products delivered at the doorsteps of the consuming work. You may, however, not be aware that the handling and transportation of the mineral is of crucial importance, in fact, the transportation and handling costs of industrial minerals frequently are a major component of the value of the ores marketed and, therefore, it is only natural that close attention should be paid to them. Many of the industrial minerals require special handling to assure that the material reaches the consumer without being contaminated and without getting wet. I invite you to accompany me through the various steps involved in "delivering the goods" to the consumer.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) East Side Access project (ESA) will, when it is complete, provide a new link to the east side of Manhattan from Long Island, NY that, linked with the Second Ave. Subway currently under construction, will assist in relieving overcrowding at Penn Station as well as the Lexington Ave. subway. ESA will bring Long Island Railroad (LIRR) directly from Long Island into a new station located 37 m (120 ft) beneath the existing Grand Central Terminal (GCT) located in the heart of Manhattan. It will connect the LIRR?s mainline tracks in Queens, via the existing 63rd Street Tunnel under the East River, to a new terminal constructed within, and beneath, the historic Grand Central Terminal.

The hard rock gold and platinum mines in South Africa have seen little development in the technology of mining. Holes are still drilled in the rock?though the latest water hydraulic rockdrills will complete that task in two minutes compared with the eight hours for hand drilling. Charging up is with far safer explosives and with available initiation systems it is no longer necessary to run up the face lighting each fuse. Movement of rock in the stope is predominately by means of scraper buckets and scraper winches?these were first introduced in the 1920s. Support is still mainly rock, either in situ pillars or backfill, or alternatively wood. Just as the mining process has changed very little it is hardly surprising that the productivity of mining is also relatively unchanged. Major efforts have been made to mechanize the mining process. However, most of the narrow reef mines where ?trackless mechanized mining? was introduced in the early1980s have reverted to conventional mining. In the wider reefs mechanized mining is the option of choice, unfortunately most of the gold and platinum mines have very narrow reefs that are not suitable to ?off the shelf? equipment. The move to introduce room-and-pillar mining into the narrow UG2 reefs is at the expense of mining more waste with the reef, fortunately it appears that appropriate waste and reef separation processes are available. Room-and-pillar mining followed by long hole drilling and blasting of a narrow slot of reef out of the pillars currently appears to offer the best of both worlds?maximum reef recovery with minimum waste dilution.

"Minera Escondida operates two open pits on a porphyry copper district, southeast of Antofagasta, Chile. During 2005, ore will be delivered exclusively from one pit to two concentrators, while from 2006 both pits will provide ore to these plants. Annual testing programmes on drillhole samples, have allowed for the construction of hardness block models since 2000. These models have delivered two main hardness descriptors, the Bond work index and the SAG power index. These parameters and plant operational specifications have been used as input information to forecast, the expected throughput and ball mill product size (P80) for each block of ore. Two forecasting techniques have been used, an in house model, strongly dependant of bond work index and MinnovEx´s CEET2, dependant of Bond work index and Sag power index and other parameters. Model performance has been evaluated from reconciliating on a monthly basis, the forecasted throughputs against a recalculated plant throughput which accounts for losses in tonnage not caused by ore hardness but instead by unscheduled plant operation problems. The model performance for 2003 was ± 2% yearly and ± 5% quarterly, well within the expected ± 3% and ± 10%. The mining sector in Canada is facing significant challenges to develop a competent workforce, including increased technical and logistical operational demands, and the imperative to promote local content. There is an increasingly unpredictable labour pool which can be aging, or have skill shortages, or non-aligned skills. As globalisation continues, companies also require efficiencies during operation across various locations. AMEC has met these challenges in the global oil and gas sector by developing our Capability Development and Competence Assurance (CDCA) program. CDCA is applicable across all process industries, including mining. CDCA supports simultaneous consistency and flexibility by defining competence at task level, with corresponding best practice blended training programs, and evaluation criteria and processes. CDCA then defines role profiles mapped to local task definition. When combined with web-based technology, this granularity allows us to manage high volume workforces, while retaining individual learning plans and progression, aiding job satisfaction, and employee retention.
