"The Mount Polley copper/gold project is located in central British Columbia and is currently being developed by Imperial Metals Corporation. Extensive laboratory and pilot plant testing was required to develop acceptable metallurgy for recovery of both sulphide and oxide copper-gold mineralization. Copper recovery is highly sensitive to oxide copper content of the feed whereas gold is primarily associated with the copper sulphide minerals. A conventional flowsheet where sulphide flotation is followed by sulphidization and oxide scavenging is described. The conventional flowsheet was used in a feasibility study which resulted in a favourable production decision at Mount Polley. Detailed engineering and permitting are in progress.More recently, laboratory and pilot testing of a new flotation reagent, S-6493*, an oxide specific collector, has indicated that improved copper recovery can be accomplished with reduced reagent consumption, including elimination of the sulphidization step, using S-6493 compared with the conventional flowsheet. The comparative metallurgical results using S-6493 and conventional sulphidization methods are presented, from both bench scale and pilot testing. Comparative economics of the conventional flowsheet and that using S-6493 are also presented. Advantages of S-6493 include reduced reagent costs, increased revenues from additional copper recovery, and overall reduction in capital and plant operating costs due to the simplified flowsheet. INTRODUCDONThe Mount Polley copper/gold property is located in Central British Columbia, 56 air kilometres northeast of Williams Lake. The first recorded exploration was in 1964. By 1989, a total of 238 diamond drill holes, totalling 27, 522 meters, was completed to detail reserves on the Mount Polley prospect. A number of drill core composites were submitted, containing a variety of oxide copper levels, for metallurgical flowsheet development. Six bulk samples were collected from surface trenches for additional bench scale testing and for pilot plant testing."

Factors of importance in the ntilization of coal fines are mentioned, and the results of flotation tests on coal fines from three important coal seams in New South Wales are presented.INTRODUCTIONEconomic utilization of fine coal is an important problem in the Australian coal industry, particularly as the proportion of fines mined is increasing with progressive mechanization.While the use of uncleaned coal fines may be economic, it may be preferable to beneficiate them, but the most economic process must be selected.For beneficiating coal finer than about 28 mesh, froth flotation can be applied, but mining engineers should avoid practices that may be detrimental to flotation. Such practices include the indiscriminate use of water, particularly that containing a wetting' agent, for dust suppression. In addition, clay stemming in wet conditions may produce slimes which could adsorb on coal surfaces, while the use of oils and greases as well as the application of stone dust and chlorides in roadway consolidation may influence adversely fine coal beneficiation.This paper deals with the application of flotation to samples of fine coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams. In addition a discussion is given of the mineralogical constitution, size analysis, and degree of liberation of ash constituents of the various samples.COAL SAMPLESRepresentative samples of coal from the Bulli, Greta, and Victoria Tunnel seams were obtained for testing.

Ok Tedi Mining Ltd has been using flotation for the production of copper/gold concentrates from a complex copper sulphide ore for several years. During this period, much effort has been devoted to metall- urgical treatment of the ore. This paper examines some of the mineralogical aspects of the sulphide minerals in the ore using the electron microprobe analyser. Results have revealed the complexity of the copper sulphide minerals and in particular, chalcocite. Analysis of both plant and laboratory flotation products has provided further insight into the effects of mineralogy on the flotation of copper and iron sulphides. A significant observation is that some of the pyrite minerals apparently exhibit natural floatability. The implications of the mineralogical characteristics of the sulphide minerals on the flotation of the ore are also discussed.

A modified Hallimond tube is described which allows the determination of the ultimate recovery R and the flotation rate constant k in a single, continuous experiment. The range of fine particles which can be satisfactorily floated with the modified apparatus can be extended by increasing the length of the bottom part of the tube. Findings suggest that pyrite and arsenopyrite can be separated in alkaline suspension using the so-called F series of collectors. Lime was found to act as a depressant. The collectors operate under pH and dosage control and do not require other depressants. Collectors used in the study were thio-amine (a cationic surfactant) and alkyl propionamide (a non-ionic surfactant)

Flotation of rare earths is complicated by the number of mineral classes that carry rare earth elements, including carbonates, phosphates, and silicates that often co-occur within the same deposit. Gangue constituents often belong to the same mineral classes as the rare earth minerals themselves. Chemical regimes developed for specific separations employ customized combinations of collectors, modifiers, and depressants that are not directly translatable to other operations. In this rougher flotation case study, a reagent suite including phosphate ester and sulfosuccinamate, originally developed for the recovery of bastnasite and monazite from silicate hosted ore, could not be applied to a synchysite ore hosted in carbonate gangue because the suite was aimed at silicate gangue rejection only. The separation of a fluorocarbonate mineral from carbonate gangue required a different chemical regime involving the use of hydroxamate and sodium silicate. Maximizing rare earth recovery was complicated by the presence of slimes. The effect of desliming and the increase in grind size was explored.

The flolation behaviour of some Australian uranium ores was investigated. Although uraninite and pitchblend float readily with fatty acids, selective concentration to produce an economically discardable tailing has not yet been achieved. This is attributed to the presence in the ores of a quantity of uranium mineral in finely dispersed form which is very difficult to liberate. For some of the ores, at least, the proportion of this material decreases with increase in head assay.Flotation may be a useful concentrating method for some Australian ores if uranium oxide is to be sold in a free competitive market.

Modelling and simulation are important aspects of flotation research, which may assist in the design of new circuits and the optimisation of existing ones. Flotation research in the AMIRA P9 project has developed a methodology for flotation plant modelling based on determination of cell (pulp) characteristics. froth characteristics, and ore floatability (using floatability components). The implementation of this methodology requires the determination of ore floatability, to which end a small flotation pilot plant known as the Floatability Characterisation Test Rig (FCTR) has been designed and then built and kindly made available to the AMIRA P9 project by Baker Process. The FCTR has a 2 tph capacity and consists of six 130 litre rougher/scavenger cells and six 50 litre cleaner/recleaner cells. The Mintek FloatStar pulp level control system is used to control the pulp level in all cells. A number of experimental procedures have been developed for using the FCTR to obtain the data required for the P9 flotation models. These procedures include how to determine the floatability parameters, Pi and mi, the bubble surface area flux, Sb, the mean residence of the pulp in the cell, t, water recovery. Rw, froth zone recovery, Rf, and the degree of entrainment, ENT. The flexibility of the FCTR allows it to be used in numerous flotation studies such as stream characterisation, reagent testing, grinding experiments, power studies, oxidation studies, and scale-up and simulation studies. This paper will describe the design and operation of the FCTR and the procedures that will be used to obtain data from the rig for modelling purposes.

THE flotation plant at Mount Lyell was erected, primarily, for the treatment of ore from the Lyell Comstock mine. These workings are situated over a mile in a direct line north of the North Mount Lyell mine, and are connected with the Reduction Work at Queenstown by a 2-ft. gauge steel tramway via the Queen River valley a distance of 7 miles. The property was purchased from the Mount Lyell Comstock Copper Co. After the disastrous fire in the North Mount Lyell mine in October, 1912, steps were immediately taken to make Lyell Comstock ore available for treatment, in order to relieve distress caused by any prolonged stoppage of work, and subsequently 13,032 tons of ore, averaging 3.38 %copper, 0.28 oz. silver, and 0.034 oz. gold; were smelted. When operations were resumed at the North Mount Lyell mine, it was evident that there was no economic advantage in smelting Lyell Comstock ore as compared with the higher value North Mount Lyell ore, which was also a better flux for the Mount Lyell pyrites, and that the future of the Lyell Comstock ore depended upon cheap mining and successful concentration of the ore. Therefore, extensive trenching and diamond-drilling was carried out, and a sufficiently large quantity of ore proved available for cheap extraction by open-cut methods. At the same time bulk tests by flotation were carried out at the Minerals Separation testing plant in Melbourne on different classes of ore from the Mount Lyell Comstock mine proper, followed by laboratory tests at Queenstown on all classes of ore available. All these tests demonstrated that the ore was amenable to the process, provided that it was ground finely enough. "Artificial Intelligence includes excellent tools for the control and supervision of industrial processes. Several thousand industrial applications have been reported worldwide. Recently, the designers of the A1 systems have begun to hybridize the intelligent techniques, expert systems, fuzzy logic and neural networks, to enhance the capability of the A1 systems. Expert systems have proved to be ideal candidates especially for the control of mineral processes.As successful case projects, an expert system based on on-line classification of the feed type using neural data analysis is described in this paper. The essential feature of this expert system is the classification of different feed types and their distinct control strategies at the plant. In addition to the classification, the expert system has a database containing information about how to handle the determined feed type. This self-leaming database scans historical process data to suggest the best treatment for the ore type under processing. The system has been tested in the Outokumpu Finnmines Oy, Hitura mine. Other projects have been reported to be in progress.INTRODUCTIONIn the past ten years considerable researches have been done in the application of artificial intelligent methods in process industry. The technologies of fuzzy logic, neural networks and expert systems have received several thousand applications worldwide: monitoring and analysis of process operations, fault diagnosis, supervisory control, feedback control and scheduling and planning of operations. Recently, the designers of these systems have begun to hybridize these intelligent techniques to enhance the current capability of expert system. Complex signal processing, neural networks, fuzzy logic and rule-based systems are also implemented to develop new so-called smart or intelligent sensors, actuators or components. Field buses are playing a more and more important role in automation systems and in imbedded systems. The development of field buses has allowed the distribution of smart components over networks."

The control of flotation plants is by no means trivial. Flotation is one of the most interactive minerals? processing operations. The interactive nature of flotation circuits results in oscillations of levels and hence of grades and recoveries. Also, poor level setpoint tracking and disturbances have negative influences on grades and recoveries. The result is an unstable plant with limited scope for optimization. An advanced controller, FloatStarTM, has been developed to provide tight control and to reduce the amount of disturbances in flotation levels. It has been shown on a number of plants that the system results in faster and better setpoint tracking, better regulatory control and faster settling times after start-ups and disturbances. The successful stabilization provided by FloatStar has made it easier to investigate the area of optimization on flotation circuits. Mintek has identified the need for a more meaningful set of setpoints or aeration rates to use as a basis for control than levels and have advocated flow control by looking after residence times. When the feed conditions change, the ideal solution would be an algorithm or strategy that finds the new optimum conditions rather than just having an unguided hunt from the previous point. A multivariable flow-optimizing algorithm, a new module in FloatStar, has been developed to calculate optimum level setpoints and/or aeration rates that will aim to optimize the residence times, mass pulls and circulating loads within a flotation circuit. "The flowsheet for the Voisey’s Bay mill had to meet the challenge of processing an ore containing high pentlandite and chalcopyrite values in a largely pyrrhotite/troilite matrix. In the 1994-97 period, circuit development focused on making a high-grade copper concentrate and a relatively low-grade nickel concentrate. However, in 1998 a circuit with copper concentrate, high-grade nickel concentrate and a Ni/Cu middlings concentrate was specified. Following a three year project delay, work resumed on the flowsheet in 2001, and the target for the overall grade of the nickel concentrate was raised from 14% to 20% nickel. To achieve this target triethylamine tetramine (TETA) and sulfite pyrrhotite depressants were used in an all lime circuit. It later became evident that, with appropriate selection of collector and adjustment of the circuit by the addition of a scavenger on the scavenger cleaner, it would be possible to approach the grade of concentrate required without the use of pyrrhotite depressants. The recycle of water and the contained thiosalts was also proven to be instrumental in raising the grade.Construction and commissioning of the mill were fast-tracked with start-up of the mill in September 2005 some six months ahead of the original schedule. Ramp-up of both throughput and metallurgy was faster than any other recent nickel installations with tonnage being limited mainly by concentrate dewatering due to the higher than initially planned ore grades.INTRODUCTIONNickel was discovered in the vicinity of Voisey’s Bay by Chislett and Verbiski working for Diamond Field Resources in 1993 and the Ovoid deposit was delineated in the winter of 1994/95. By the end of 1995 the Ovoid had been well explored and at that time was thought to have a reserve of at least 30 million tonnes with an average grade of 2.83% Ni and 2.0% Cu. Drilling to the east of the Ovoid had indicated the presence of significant mineralization. In June of 1995, Inco Limited bought a 25% share in the Voisey’s Bay Nickel Company (VBNC) which was a subsidiary holding company set up by Diamond Fields. Inco also bought 8% of Diamond Fields and negotiated the right to sell all the nickel produced from VBNC for twenty years as part of this agreement. In April 1996, Inco bought the 75% of VBNC shares that it did not own."

Studies to enhance the FLSmidth forced air machine through changes in the design, showed important improvements through changes in the number of Rotor blades, stator designs, rotor air distribution and other designs features. The main outcomes from this study highlighted that increasing the number of rotor blades increased the selectivity while decreasing power requirements while stators with slots have better results in terms of recovery, flotation efficiency and selectivity than without slots.Also the rotor air distribution makes a difference in the design when comparing different distribution criteria whilst keeping all features of shape and number of blades etc constant. At the most efficient rotor air distribution design, copper recovery reached one of the highest values while keeping good selectivity. The possible explanation for that is the increase in the pump capacity indicated by the increase in the specific power.It was seen as significant that reduction in specific power for some designs tested compared with the then current standard design had an average of 30% less power consumption.As a result, FLSmidth was able to identify new designs that decreased power and improved recovery, as well as, identifying some designs that specifically improved fine and/or coarse particle recovery.CITATION:Silva, R, Caldwell, K, Bell, D, Olson, T and Vianna, S, 2013. Laboratory results from an initial study on the removal of SO2 from gas mixtures are reported using air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) technology. Tap water and alkaline solutions were used for absorption and the influence of gas flow rate, water flow rate and length of the ASH unit were investigated. Complete removal of SO2 was possible with very favorable kinetics. The efficiency of sulfur dioxide absorption from air using the ASH is compared with the efficiency of conventional technology.

A chlorination pilot plant having capacity to produce 5?10 kg/hr of titanium tetrachloride is in operation at the chlorination facility in Mintek. The bubbling fluid bed chlorination plant can be operated in batch and/or continuous process to study the chlorination kinetics of various feedstocks. The chlorination of titaniferrous ores to produce titanium tetrachloride (TiCl4) was carried out during the commissioning of the pilot plant and also as part of the titanium programme carried out at Mintek. TiCl4 is a basic raw material for producing commercial titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metal. This paper discusses the challenges faced during the commissioning and operation of the chlorination pilot plant. It also discusses the effect on the auxiliary facilities and instrumentation as a result of the harsh operating conditions of +1000°C and use of corrosive gases like chlorine and titanium tetrachloride. It discusses the effect of physico-chemical properties of the titanium tetrachloride and iron chlorides. The effect on the chlorinator refractory lining due to heating and cooling of the chlorinator is also discussed. Besides the special provisions made during the design of the chlorinator, this paper also discusses the operational experience and possible solutions to be implemented in future. The transport of fluid, heat ,and particles (bubbles and solid inclusions) in flowing molten steel is investigated in steel refining ladles, the continuous casting tundish, continuous casting mold and strand, and steel ingot casting processes. The two-equation k-?? model is used to simulate the turbulence. Multiphase fluid flow is numerically simulated with a Lagrangian-Eulerian approach, an Eularian-Eulerian approach and the Volume Of Fluid (VOF) method. The simulation can predict inclusion trajectories, inclusion removal fraction, free surface waves and other phenomena, which can be used to optimize these important metallurgical operations.
