A lightweight compressed oxygen rescue breathing apparatus (RBA) for rescue and recovery missions has been developed by Mine Safety Appliances Company under contract to the Bureau of Mines. The apparatus is a positive pressure, closed circuit system of 4 hours duration. The weight of the complete apparatus, including an optional cooler, is slightly over 30 pounds. Weight reduction over currently available RBAs is achieved through the use of lithium hydroxide for scrubbing C02 in place of conventional chemicals and the use of a composite glass fiber/ aluminum shell cylinder for oxygen storage in place of steel cylinders. Positive pressure is maintained in the breathing circuit at all times by applying a constant spring force to the breathing bag. The harness has been designed to reduce the work of the wearer by redistributing the weight of the apparatus to the wearer's hips.

The objective of this investigation was to obtain data on friction-head losses of sand slurries during their transport in pipelines. The data ultimately will be used in designing hydraulic transport systems. Information that was incidental to the primary objective was gathered on degradation, changed percolation characteristics, and critical velocities of the slurries~ Tests were made in a closed-circuit pilot plant, with one type of tailing, through horizontal 2-, 3-, and 4-inch-pipe test sections at various pulp densities and flow velocities. Approximately 2,000 tests were run in the pilot plant. The ranges of flow velocities used in the experiment were 2.8 to 19 f.p.s. in the 2-inch line, 4 to 14.5 f.p.s. in the 3-inch line, and 4 to 11 f.p.s. in the 4-inch line. Velocities were varied in increments of 0.5 f.p.s. through the entire velocity range in each pipe size. Densities were varied in 3-percent increments from 40 to 70 percent solids by weight except for one series of tests in the 2-inch line; in this series, densities were varied in 5-percent increments from 5 to 65 percent solids by weight.

In the manufacture of steel by any process the refining period involves the partial elimination of the metalloids carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and silicon, by virtue of their reactions with ferrous oxide. At the end of this refining stage the metal consists chiefly of iron in which small amounts of these materials are dissolved. Unless some deoxidizer is added to the steel at this time, the reaction between carbon and ferrous oxide will continue with such force that it is impossible to form sound steal in the ingot molds. Instead, the product will exhibit a marked porosity due to the formation and trapping of carbon monoxide-the product of the reaction mentioned. However, if deoxidizers are added, steel may be obtained which is dense and free from gas bubbles. At the same time the deoxidation products will remain in the steal as impurities. For example, silicon additions form Si02 or combinations of Si02 and FeO. Additions of manganese form deoxidation products consisting of various proportions of MnO and FeO. It is also quite obvious that simultaneous additions of manganese and silicon will form oxide combinations either in the binary system MnO-SiO2 or in the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. Work at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Metallurgical Advisory Board, involved the study of such deoxidizing reactions and their products. In this connection considerable information is necessary concerning FeO, MeO, Si02, and Al 203, and their various combinations. Some of the most needed data are the melting points of all of these materials. At the outset of this work ordinary methods of melting point determinations were found to be inadequate for various reasons, and the procedure finally selected involved the use of the micropyrometer with occasional corroboration by quenching methods, The reasons for this selection, together with a description of the apparatus, are given in the following pages.

In the same year, Iran ranked fourth among world petroleum exporters, providing 8.4 percent of total world exports.

A preliminary program dated April 25, 1974, was prepared for Development Engineering, Inc. (DEI) on research and development. for laboratory, field and other engineering studies on the disposal of retorted oil shale. This program was revised and published as a final document dated December 17, 1974. The document included discussions on the peculiarities of retorted shale materials to be investigated and discussions of the various laboratory and field tests which would need to be conducted to define their physical and chemical properties. The proposed research and development program was divided into eight work phases as follows: I Program Development. II Exploratory Laboratory Tests on Old U.S.B.M. Retorted Shale. III Laboratory Tests on Pilot Plant Retorted Shales, IV Laboratory Tests on Retorted Shale from the Semi-Works Plant, Field, Test Plots and Ponds. V Field Compaction Tests. This is a progress report summarizing more than 5 years of a long-range Bureau of Mines research program. The purpose of this program has been to investigate the fire and explosion properties of Green River oil shale in the Bureau's Experimental Mine, in laboratories, and in the field. The lean limits of explosibility of oil shale dust, by small-and large-scale tests, are reported as a function of grade, ignition source, and particle size. A limited number of laboratory tests on the autoignition of oil shale dust layers and the spontaneous combustion tendencies of oil shale are described. Moderate-scale rubble fire tests were conducted to determine flame spread rates as a function of ventilation flow. With the aid of a system to continuously monitor methane emissions in a deep oil shale mine, the characteristics of the methane flow are reported as a function of ventilation and blasting procedures, and are compared with gas yields from core samples. Tentative predictions as to the emission of the methane to be expected in deep oil shale mines, far from the outcrop, are offered. Brief reference is made to a parallel investigation into the fire and explosion hazards of oil shale mining and processing by a Bureau contractor; detailed results of the latter investigation are to be found in the contractor's reports.

To aid in minimizing adverse environmental impacts of mining and mineral processing, the Bureau of Mines studied changes in soil characteristics in topsoil stockpiled during mining operations. Topsoil stockpiles in arid areas of New Mexico, Utah, and Wyoming were sampled over a 1- to 8-yr period to determine any changes in physical, chemical, or biological parameters in the top 15 ft of soil. Parameters examined in this study included soil moisture, pH, electrical conductivity, and cation exchange capacity; total nitrogen, organic carbon, carbon to nitrogen ratio, extractable potassium, and soluble phosphorus levels in the soil; general levels of bacteria activity in the soil; and productivity of the soil as measured by shoot yield in growth tests. Data were analyzed by multiple linear regression to determine possible effects of stockpile age and depth. Bacteria population counts, used as an indicator of goner l bacterial activity, was the only parameter found to be significantly correlated with stockpile age and depth at more than one site. Bacterial activity increased with depth at the two sites where it was measured. Activity increased with age at one site and decreased with age at the second. Significant changes in soil pH, electrical conductivity, and moisture were significantly correlated with stockpile age and depth at single sites. This study did not show significant, consistent deterioration in soil characteristics or growth yield of topsoil stored in stockpiles.

In June 1933 the Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the State of Oklahoma and the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce,, published a report of the gas reserves in the Oklahoma City oil field3/ based upon data as of October 1932, at which time there were 43 classified gas wells in the field, The estimates were obtained by the ?porosity-area" method. There are two general methods of estimating natural-gas reserves. The porosity-area method, as used by Hill and Rawlins, is used when a gas field is comparatively new but after enough drilling has been done to determine the average thickness, porosity, and areal extent of the producing horizon. The "pressure-volume? method of estimating gas reserves, the method used in this report, may be used after a sufficient volume of gas has bean withdrawn from the reservoir to cause an appreciable decline in reservoir pressure.

This paper presents the results of intermittent study begun in 1956 by the Federal Bureau of Mines of yieldable steel arches and yieldable steel ring sets installed for support of development openings in metal mines. Observations were made of this type of support in several iron mines in the northeast and north-central states. The sets, both arches and rings fabricated in the United States, are made from a hot-rolled, cold bent, structural U-shaped steel section in two weights, 15 pounds and 21 pounds per foot. The lighter section is generally used, It is 4.41 square inches in cross section area, and the calculation is that a 6-foot length of this structural shape installed as a supporting column, will safely carry the same load as a Douglas fir post of the same length but of 22 times the cross-sectional area of the steel.

A room and pillar coal operation in central Pennsylvania was experiencing roof cutters and long running roof falls caused by high horizontal stresses. The roof conditions created hazards for the miners, and caused several production panels to be abandoned prematurely. The mine requested assistance from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in applying the "advance and relieve" mining to reduce the affects of the horizontal stress during panel development. The "advance and relieve" plan that was developed called for removing a pillar on one side of the panel as it was being advanced, thus creating a cave. The caving then relieved a portion of the horizontal stress across the panel. Because the horizontal stress direction is key to the success of this method, stress mapping as well as mining experience was used to establish the direction of the horizontal stress. Subsequent field measurements provided an estimate of the stress magnitude. Three panels were mined using this technique, and good roof conditions were achieved in all these panels. Instrumentation was used to monitor the stress changes in the roof created by the cave. Stress relief of over 1,000 psi was measured 120 ft from the cave and to depths of 20 ft into the roof. The lateral extent of the stress relief zone across the panels appears to be about 400 to 500 ft. This case history has provided much insight into the practical application of the "advance and relieve" method discussed in this paper.

Demonstrate the technical feasibility of using nontraditional, low-rank, coal-based fuels and new coal-based technologies for mineral and metallurgical applications. Approach A cooperative research effort was initiated between the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of Energy and the minerals industry to extend the application of the fixed-bed gasification process to low-rank Western coals. The research effort enabled cooperators to gain operating experience in the use of hot, raw producer gas for iron ore pellet induration and other high-temperature mineral processes. Researchers were able to gather data regarding the fundamental engineering aspects of the fixed-bed process and gas cleanup for a wide range of solid fuel properties. Applying Fixed-Bed Gasification As a prerequisite to gathering the data needed for the study, the Bureau of Mines designed and installed, at one of its laboratories, a 6.5-ft-diam. single stage, fixed-bed, air-blown atmospheric pressure gasifier. The gasifier was coupled with a hot, raw gas combustion system and iron ore pellet in. duration kiln. The gasifier is rated at 1.5 ton/h capacity of bituminous coal.

The heat of formation of scandium sesquioxide (Sc203) has not been measured previously, and existing values for gallium sesquioxide (Ga203) are subject to large uncertainties. As a consequence, thermodynamic calculations involving these oxides hare lacked scientific exactness. This paper reports newly determined values of the heats of formation of gallium and scandium sesquioxides at 298.15° K., by combustion calorimetry. The corresponding free energies of formation are derived from heat and entropy data.

"Explosions in bituminous coal mines are preventable. The combination of adequate ventilation, thorough rock-dusting, and water on the cutter bars of mining machines and of empty and loaded cars will certainly reduce the hazard to a minimum, if not remove it entirely. This is the attitude taken by the Woodward Iron Co. in lessening or removing the dust and gas explosion hazard from its Dolomite and Mulga mines.This report was made possible through the willingness of Frank H. Crockard, president of the Woodward Iron Co. to make records available and to authorize their publication for the benefit of the coal-mining industry.The compilation of these data and preparation of maps was facilitated by the cooperation of M. Heard, general superintendent of coal mines, J. B. Whatley, assistant general super-intendent of coal, and R. P. Whetmore, chief mining engineer.The Dolomite and Mulga mines are about 16 miles southwest of Birmingham, Jefferson County, Ala., on a company owned and operated railroad which connects ore mines, coal mines, coke ovens, and furnaces.In the Dolomite property there is a 30°, 860-foot, double-tracked slope for hoisting, three manway and air slopes and one air shaft, all in rock.At Mulga there is a 220-foot hoisting shaft, an air shaft and two manways, and material and air slopes, all in rock to the coal bed.The coal in both mines comes from the Pratt bed, which is the next coal above the Mary Lee bed in the Warrior Basin. The coal is horizontal or slightly undulating, with thickness varying from 36 to 72 inches and averaging 50 inches.The method of mining is essentially room-and-pillar with modifications for mechanized sections. The mines produced approximately 1,100,000 tons with 2,328,309 man-hours exposure n 1929 and 900,000 tons with 1,697,436 man-hours exposure in 1930.Through the work of the safety department the entire personnel in the coal mines, as well as in other departments, makes safety an essential part of efficient operation.Both mines are gassy; Dolomite produces about 334,000 cubic feet and Mulga about 919,000 cubic feet of methane every 24 hours.The ventilation maps, two of Dolomite mines (figs. 1 and 2) and one of Mulga (fig. 3) give as much of the details of ventilation as is practicable to put on maps of such scale. As will be seen from these maps there are two main ventilating fans in Dolomite mine and two in Mulga mine and the general direction of the air travel is indicated by long arrows to fan 1 and short arrows to fan 2 in each mine. Each fan has a gas or steam auxiliary drive and each mine has a complete fan and power unit ready for operation in emergency.In Dolomite, recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 82,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.2-inch water-gage pressure, with an analyzed methane content of 0.15 per cent, and fan 2 exhausts 115,500 cubic feet of air at 3.8-inch pressure and 0.10 per cent of methane. In addition, a Capell fan at No. 2 air shaft is a standby or emergency unit.In Mulga recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 83,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.0-inch pressure and 0.18 per cent of methane, and fan 3 exhaust 119,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 5.4 inch pressure and 0.35 per cent of methane. Fan 2 at No. 2 shaft is a standby or emergency unit for the Mulga mine.The ventilation is on a split system in both mines. All part split and total returns are measured, sampled, and analyzed weekly, requiring one man two days each week. During December, 1930, 77 samples were collected and analyzed in Mulga and 78 in Dolomite. Two weekly reports covering part of December, 1930, are given here so that they can be studied to show control of ventilation in the Dolomite and Mulga mines. In the event that a split sample shows more than 0.50 per cent of methane, immediate steps are taken to lower the explosive-gas content. The reports follow:"

Determine the advantages and operational limitations of water-let-assisted cutting used with mining equipment. Approach The Bureau of Mines con-ducted a research study to evaluate water-Jet-assisted cutting both in the laboratory and in underground mines. Earlier research on water-jet-assist was limited to laboratory studies where bit speeds and penetration depths were very low and large cutting force reductions were reported. For the past years, research by the Bureau of Mines and others has been concerned with the application of water-jet-assisted cutting under more realistic mining conditions. Study Results Water-jet-assisted cutting employs a mechanical cut-ting bit combined with a moderate to high-pressure water jet directed just in front of the bit tip to assist in the cutting process. Recent Bureau findings show that the addition of the water jet to the cutting bit can improve cutting in harder materials, significantly reduce respirable dust and bit wear, and increase product size. Some of these findings are presented as follows.

PRODUCTION of cesium, cesium salts, and rubidium salts in the United States declined somewhat from 1961 levels; rubidium production was virtually unchanged. Imports of pollucite declined because consumption was supplied partially out of inventory. Domestic Production.-About 50 tons of pollucite was reported mined at the Tin Mountain mine in the Black Hills of South Dakota. The Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich., MSA Research Corp., Callery, Pa., and Penn Rare Metals, Inc., Revere, Pa., produced a total of 159 pounds of cesium. Rubidium production remained essentially the same as in 1961. Shipments of the two metals by these companies and by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Trona, Calif., totaled 279 pounds. Production of cesium and rubidium salts by American Potash & Chemical Corp., Penn Rare Metals, Inc., and Rocky Mountain Research, Inc., Denver, Colo., declined substantially during 1962.

As part of its overall program of coal carbonization, the Bureau of Mines is studying the coking properties of coals that may be used for metallurgical purposes. The objectives of this study were given in detail in a previous report.2/ The suitability of coal for metallurgical use depends primarily on (1) chemical composition, (2) preparation characteristics, and (3) carbonization behavior. The first two factors, as well as the available reserves, are considered in selecting coals for carbonization tests. High methane emissions originating from the active face areas and from the fractured formations overlying and underlying the mined coalbed can adversely affect both safety and productivity in underground coal mines. Since ventilation alone may not be sufficient to control the methane levels in the longwall mining environment, gob gas ventholes have become a standard supplementary methane control option in many mines. As mines progress into deeper and gassier coalbeds, or as longwall panel size increases, ventilation and gob gas ventholes together may not be sufficient to maintain methane levels within statutory limits. To decrease the risk associated with methane emissions under these circumstances, in-seam horizontal methane drainage is often used to reduce the gas content of the coalbed prior to mining. Horizontal methane drainage borehole completion designs, drilling strategies, and degasification lead times may need to be adjusted for site-specific conditions due to mine design, geology, and the gas content of the coalbed. This study investigates different horizontal methane drainage borehole patterns, borehole lengths, and degasification times prior to and during panel extraction to evaluate their effectiveness in reducing methane emissions using a "dynamic" 3D reservoir modeling of a 38 1-m wide longwall panel operating in the Pittsburgh coalbed. Results of this study showed that dual and tri-lateral boreholes are more effective in decreasing emissions and in shielding the entries compared to fewer shorter, cross-panel, horizontal boreholes parallel to the longwall face. Modeling results showed that after 12 months of pre-mining methane drainage, the average longwall face emission rates can be reduced by as much as 10.3 m3/min and 6.8 m3/min using tri- and dual-lateral boreholes, respectively. It was also shown that if pre-mining methane drainage time is short, it is important to continue methane drainage during the panel extraction to maximize reductions in longwall face emissions since additional face emission reductions achieved during this period can be comparable to pre-mining degasification.
