In a predrained gassy coalmine, ventilation control plays a secondary role to the longwall (LW) goaf drainage systems to safely manage panel return gas levels. Typically, the LW specific gas emission (SGE) estimation models provide anticipated goaf gas emissions and arriving at required gas drainage capacity for various coal production scenarios. A study comparing the various LW goaf gas hole spacing patterns with weekly production rates of up to 270 kt/w of an operating mine with high SGE rates (~20 m3/t) was carried out. The goaf capture efficiency of LW panels ranged from 64 per cent to 85 per cent. For the first time, gas content of upper seam data post LW retreat were used to verify the current SGE prediction models. This study has shown that an average of 50 m goaf spacing is optimal for management of high production retreat gassy LW panels in presence of multiple upper and lower seams with gas emission zone influence reaching up to 200 m above workings. Due to the horizontal stress direction related geotechnical issues, goaf hole failures just behind the LW face is a recurring challenge resulting in significant and immediate increase in LW panel return gas levels. The widely accepted kinetic model for the gaseous reduction of hematite is critically examined. The formation of the wustite layer during internal reduction cannot be explained in terms of solid-state diffusion. Present evidence indicates the existence of a micropore system in the wustite adjacent to the magnetite with the gas/solid type of reaction occurring not only at the iron/wustite interface but also at the wustite/magnetite interface. During the partial reduction of dense hematite pellets, in a controlled atmosphere, porous magnetite and wustite are formed as products. The mean pore size, as measured by mercury injection, increases with time at constant temperature and with temperature increase over the range 6500C to 950°C. The sizes of the pores indicate that Knudsen diffusion is the principal gaseous transport mechanism across thick layers of magnetite or wustite.The kinetics of the gaseous reduction to iron are consistent with a mixed control mechanism involving the interaction of gaseous diffusion effects with a first order reversible chemical reaction at the iron/wustite interface. Because of the larger pore sizes in the iron layers, ordinary molecular gaseous diffusion must be the principal transport mechanism. The usual experimental methods used for establishing the validity of chemical rate ~ontrol are incapable of differentiating between the mixed control- mechanism and exclusive chemical control.Some implications of mixed control kinetics are developed, including a predicted independence of rate on reducing gas pressure at higher pressures.INTRODUCTIONAn extensive literature review of the reduction of iron oxides has been compiled recently by Themelis and Gauvin (1962). From the large number of papers published and the widely divergent opinions of workers in this field, it appears that a simple unified quantitative analysis of reduction kinetics is not possible. At Appin colliery, geological structural analyses and investigations of roof conditions suggest roof failure may be attributed to vectorial stresses acting on underground openings, and inducing movement along inherent discontinuities in the surrounding rocks. Certain complex joint and fracture patterns tend to exhibit the effect of this movement resulting often in local deterioration in natural support.The following conclusions are drawn.1. Roof failure is related to the inherent nature of the roof rocks, the presence of mechanical discontinuities, and the vectorial stresses imposed upon it.2. Roof failure is not necessarily related to the statistically most prominent jointing.3. Colliery development approximately parallel to the direction of the statistically most prominent jointing sometimes results in favourable roof conditions.4. The maximum principal stress is the resultant of those vectorial stresses acting upon a mine opening and may be inferred from roof adjustments to those stresses after mining.5. Statistical analyses of jointing in the mine workings can provide clues to the tectonic force or forces which have been regionally or locally influential.6. There is a probable relationship between mining induced fracturing, jointing, and micro-fractures in quartz grains, within the sediments of the mine roof.

The State of New South Wales is highly favoured in having vast deposits of coal adjacent to and within easy reach of the coastal Ports. Not only is the quality of the fuel generally superior to any found in the other States, but it is greater in extent than in any other part of the Continent. For interesting and reliable details of the history of the discovery of coal, the geology of the coal bearing strata, analysis of the various coals and other valuable data, the readers are referred to the book recently issued by the New South Wales Government, entitled The Mineral Resources of New South Wales, by Edward F. Pittman, A.R.S.M., etc., by the direction of the Hon. T. L. Fegan, Minister for Mines. The mining community is indebted to the Minister for having had published the most valuable condensed record of the mineral resources of the State extant.For the purposes of this paper we will only give such a general description of the coal fields as will make it intelligible in connection with the subject of the coal mining in the State of New South Wales.

Dust sampling is pivotal in estimating the ‘dose’ of dust exposure and in deriving dose-response curves in epidemiological studies. Over the last half century, gravimetric sampling has been the fundamental means for dust exposure monitoring using recognised respirable size-selective standards. In Australia, a gravimetric sampling technique has been followed since 1983 using the Higgins-Dewell (HD) type cyclones (AS2985). The re-emergence of ‘Black Lung’ or Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in Queensland, Australia has re-kindled the need for better understanding of personal dust monitoring, compliance determination, accuracy, timeliness of sampling results and dust control systems. Reporting dust levels in real time empowers miners and operators to take immediate action to avoid being exposed to excessive airborne dust. Two decades of intensive research in the USA has led to the introduction of gravimetric based continuous personal dust monitors (CPDMs) called PDM3700 as compliance tools. The new real-time mass based sensor is a continuous mass based dust monitor using the Tapered Element Oscillating Microbalance (TEOM) principle and is regarded as significantly superior to the current gravimetric sampling methodology.Recently the overall respirable dust standard in USA coalmines has been reduced from the historic 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3. This paper provides the results of a comparative pairwise study of an existing gravimetric sampler and the PDM3700 carried out in 3 different Australian underground mines. The field results consistently suggest that there is a significant ‘measurement bias’ between the current gravimetric HD sampler and the PDM3700 monitor operated using a similar HD type cyclone. The results show that the currently used cyclone measurements are approximately 59 per cent higher than the ‘auditable’ PDM3700 monitor data at the current compliance limit of 3 mg/m3. Based on a review of the extensive data collected, the differences can in part be attributed to the aerosol size selectivity of the samplers with the current gravimetric sampler used in mines, collecting more larger sized particles (D90 of 15 µm). This finding has significant consequences for historic exposure results and their use in medical surveillance programs, as well as the current approach to non-compliance determination.CITATION:Belle, B, 2017. "Column flotation has been successfully applied to iron ore concentration since the 1980s with the goal of reducing silica content and allowing for the efficient production of pellet feed. Since then, columns have been widely used in iron ore processing due to: their lower capital and operational costs when compared to conventional cells their ability to generate higher concentrate grades and recoveries.Currently, more than 100 columns have been installed within Brazilian iron ore processing circuits for rougher, cleaner and scavenger duties. Despite it being a well-established approach, several technological advances have improved column design, accessories and performance. "In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. The Prince Lyell orebody at Mount Lyell Mine has a rich mining history commencing with the open pit in 1935, which transitioned underground in 1972. Between 1972 and 2014 a total of 64 Mt was mined underground as the mine extended from 210 m to 1100 m below surface. As the depth increased, three separate transitions in the mining method occurred to meet the changing geotechnical conditions, ore grade, mining costs and metal prices. The first was open stoping with pillar recovery in 1972, followed by front caving and longitudinal sublevel caving (1995), and finally transverse sublevel caving (2004 to 2014). This paper provides an overview of key geotechnical and planning milestones relating to the evolution of the mining method including underground stability, gravity flow, cavability and subsidence. Key aspects of the mine design, geotechnical parameters and rock mass response are described and critiqued with reference to observational, numerical and empirical methods.CITATION:Sharrock, G B and Cuello, D A, 2016. The conclusion from the debate over the last decade in the mining sector is that, for grade control, reverse circulation (RC) drill sampling gives more reliable results due to less sampling problems than blasthole samples. However, by conducting the latter with well-controlled procedures there still exist fair possibilities to counteract the major blasthole sampling problems and achieve fit-for-purpose representativeness, especially if based on minimal loss of fines. In the present PhD study, extensive replicate experiments and variographic characterisations are conducted to evaluate the performance of manual blasthole (BH) sampling and sectorial segment sampling. The experiments were performed in Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara AB (LKAB)’s Leveäniemi open pit mine in the north of Sweden. The experimental area is an apatite-magnetite iron ore deposit of the Kiruna type, with the demand to exhibit a maximum of local heterogeneity to allow the experiment the largest possible conclusion powers. Gathering and splitting the complete BH drill cutting cones (fines cone, coarse cone) served as an authoritative reference on which to assess the representativity of the two BH sampling methods.Results show that manual BH drill sampling is able to produce samples with an acceptable accuracy and precision if performed properly and with insight. Based on variographic comparison, segment sampling shows similar precision for chemical grades as the manual sampling, while the particle size distributions were more deviating for segment sampling than for manual sampling at the high and low size ranges. Possible reasons for these partly surprising results are discussed.For further investigation of the performance of BH versus RC drill sampling, a second experiment has been planned on a parallel profile. The Roa Opencast Coal Mine is situated at the north-eastern end of the Greymouth Coalfield. It lies on an eastern flank of the Paparoa Range, 16 km north-east of the town of Greymouth on the West Coast of the South Island. Road access is via a sealed road from Blackball to Roa, then by a 5.3 km all weather, gravel road, which gains 340 m in elevation from 190 m RL at Roa to a maximum height of 530 m near the opencast.

A device is described which is suitable for the automatic sampling of dust in dust laden flue gases. This device, called a Venturi Sampler, consists of two pipes each fitted with a suitably designed venturi.Both pipes are placed in the flue where one acts as an open-ended reference tube and the other as the actual sampling tube.The gas sampling rate is automatically controlled so as to maintain a zero differential pressure between pressure tappings in the two venturi throats. The venturies are so designed that under these conditions the gas velocity in the sampling pipe is always equal to the free gas velocity in the flue-that is isokinetfc sampling conditions are maintained.INTRODUCTIONThere is a constant need in industry for regular and accurate assessments of dust losses, both to assist in improving operating efficiencies in order to minimize losses, and to obtain accurate metallurgical balances. In many cases where sampling is carried out in dust laden gases, the existing sampling methods are both laborious and inaccurate, and often make no provision for changes in flue gas velocity while sampling is in progress.In the majority of cases where a measurement of dust losses in a stack or flue is required, a preliminary velocity survey is made with a pitot tube to establish the gas velocity at each of the points at which samples are to be taken. The sample of gas (and dust) is withdrawn through a tube connected via a flowmeter to an exhausting apparatus. Some means of removing the dust from the gas sample is placed in circuit ahead of the exhausting apparatus. Collecting the clay fraction of active stream sediment from a flowing stream for geochemical analysis i a difficult process. One either takes a sample of dry fine-grained sediment from the stream bank (dry weather and dry sample are uncommon in parts of New Zealand and Tasmania), or dredges up a sample of sand and mud out of the stream.The latter method produces a soggy ample bag full of mud and sand, with varying amounts of gravel, depending on the size of the stream. The water can be filtered from such a sample by means of a Buchner filter funnel, but is difficult to obtain a vacuum in the bush. This problem can be solved by using a small hand- queeze bellows such as used in priming petrol pumps on outboard petrol motors. The common laboratory hand bellows is not powerful enough.A 70 mm diameter two-piece polythene Buchner filter funnel (Fig. 1) can be used. A length of rubber tubing is fitted around the inlet valve of the hand bellows and this valve is then jammed into the pipe at the bottom of the filter funnel (the polythene pipe may be trimmed with a knife to fit over the inlet valve of the bellows). The vacuum is generated and maintained by squeezing the hand bellows.The technique of collecting a sample of the clay fraction is to dredge a sample of the fine-grained active stream sediment out of the stream with a container, such as a plastic mug. The sample is agitated to get the clay fraction into suspension and the muddy suspension is then decanted into the Buchner funnel. Lower Miocene Maryville Coal Measures at Waitewhena Coalfield, in the Taranaki coal region, include seams of sub-bituminous coal up to 4 m thick. During coalfield exploration Fletcher Challenge Ltd drilled ten cored holes, all of which encountered at least one seam. Coal quality is variable. Ash ranges from six to 12 per cent and sulphur from 0.5 to three per cent. A basal seam, overlying the Lower Mokau Sandstone, appears to extend throughout the area under investigation. A rider seam, of variable thickness, closely overlies the main seam in most drillholes. The rider converges with the main seam to the north and vertical trends in coal properties suggest that the seams are united in some locations. A less extensive seam sometimes occurs at the top of the coal measures beneath the Upper Mokau Sandstone. The lithostratigraphy of the intervening coal measures is complex, and coexistence of fluviodeltaic, lagoonal/lacustrine, and marine depositional environments is provisionally inferred. Lateral variations in coal properties (clastic derived ash, volatile matter, inertinite, hydrogen), thickness of the sedimentary parting between the basal seam and rider, texture of the coal measure sediments, and distribution of the upper seam all indicate persistence of a relatively low lying northeast-trending zone which may have been structurally controlled. Available data indicate that coal measure accumulation was terminated by marine transgression from north to south.

Difficulties were experienced in the identification of carbonate minerals intimately associated with iron oxides in the so called carbonate ore, which occurs at depth in the Iron Duke Orebody.Determination of refractive indices by examination under the microscope using the immersion method, together with inferred chemical composition indicates that dolomite and parankerite are common constituents. Histograms of the manganese and sulphur contents strongly suggest that manganese is associated with the carbonate minerals, and that the highest sulphur assays occur near the base of the carbonate body.From the present work it is concluded that refractive indices indicate only a very approximate composition for carbonates of the parankerite type.The different carbonate minerals occur in irregular zones.INTRODUCTIONThe Iron Duke deposit is situated in the southern portion of the South Middleback Range on Eyre Peninsula, S.A., 30 miles from Whyalla. (Fig. 1).Drilling at Iron Duke revealed a large body of so called carbonate ore, which was tested in detail at cross section 1000 ft. S by three diamond drill holes, DDH.57, 67 and 78. (Fig. 2)Most specimens of carbonate ore described below were obtained from DDH 67 and 78.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe South Middleback Range is composed of two parallel ridges trending north-south. The Iron Duke orebody is situated on the southern portion of the western ridge. (Fig.1) .The rocks of these ranges belong to the Middleback Group which rests on a gneiss complex. Their age is considered to be Middle Precambrian or late Archaean.

The No. 2 Ore-shaft, at Mount Isa Mines Limited, involving the use of boreholes as ropeways for the upper portion thereof, constitutes, we believe, a unique feature in hoisting installations. The boreholes were sunk from the surface to a depth of 390 ft., thus eliminating the necessity of erecting the hoist at an underground location or construction of the shaft for this distance. Fig. 1, a diagrammatic cross-section through the shaft, shows the complete installation from the surface down to the first loading station below No. 7 haulage level.During the latter part of 1936, conditions encountered in sinking the Main Ore shaft made it impracticable and uneconomical to continue deepening it to serve haulage levels below the present No. 5-level. Plans were therefore made for an interior shaft, to serve new lower levels, that terminated above No. 5-level so that ore hoisted could be drawn off on this level and transported to the Main Ore shaft for final conveyance to the mill crude ore bin.Referring again to Fig. 1, it is apparent that the section above No. 4-level, if opened out to full shaft size, would be inoperative and would serve no useful purpose except, possibly, as a ventilation duct. Original plans therefore did not include continuation of the shaft above No. 4-level. Excavation of a hoist room upon No. 5-level; erection of sheave wheels just below No. 4-level, and a long inclined ropeway leading from the hoist to the sheaves, were incorporated in the general layout. Epithermal deposits (Au or Ag dominant, ± base metals) form within ~1 km of the surface in volcanic belts, both arcs and rifts, with the different tectonic settings reflected in distinctly different characteristics. Within arcs, deposits are typically intrusion centred and commonly associated with hypogene advanced argillic alteration, both in lithocaps and as halos to shallow or proximal portions of some veins; such alteration is coupled with processes that form porphyry Cu-Au deposits at depths of ~1–3 km. Introduction of metals is related to the subsequent phyllic-stage overprint; if this fluid rises to the level of the lithocap or into epithermal veins, Au mineralisation with Cu or Ag may occur, associated with sulfate minerals or muscovite. By contrast, Au-rich (both low Ag:Au ratio and bonanza grade) colloform quartz veins form at shallow depths in volcanic rifts, typically within a few hundred metres of the surface, with clay halos and topped by silica sinter if the palaeosurface is preserved. The geologic variability in volcanic belts, including host rocks, structures and hydraulic gradients, means that many epithermal deposits vary from the end-member features of the principal styles. Effective exploration requires familiarity with end-member styles as well as potential variations, plus the mineralogical indicators of palaeotemperature (eg evidence for erosion depth, fluid flow channels). Traditionally, capital costs of major resource development projects have been estimated as a single amount to which a percentage accuracy has been assigned based on the method of preparation of the estimate, that is, on the amount of information available to develop the estimate.However, there is a growing recognition of the importance of a probabilistic approach to capital cost estimates, and of a more rigorous calculation of estimate accuracies and of the presentation thereof. Accuracies can be expressed with more certainty as a percentage of the estimate amount where the percentage represents one standard distribution on the probability curve for the capital cost of that specific project. Thus confidence levels can be stated for various estimated amounts - for example, it can be stated that there is an 85% chance that a stated amount will not be exceeded, or a 90% certainty that a (higher) amount will not be exceeded. Moreover, the right skewness of the probability distribution curve for most projects can be readily recognised and reflected in the evaluations. This enables senior executives and board members to have a clearer understanding of investment uncertainties, and the possible magnitude of commitments.

Henderson Operation’s underground molybdenum mine has been in production since 1976. Since that historic date, more than one billion pounds of moly has been produced, and over 120 Mt of ore extracted from three different levels and many different panels. The safe and successful operation of Henderson has been, and will continue to be, dependent on utilising an increasingly sophisticated fleet of equipment, advanced designs, innovative mining techniques, best practices in maintenance processes, improvements in crushing and conveying systems, and most importantly, the training and mentoring of the underground staff.
