"IntroductionThe SABREX Blast Modelling Program was developed jointly by the companies of the ICI Explosives Group, of which C-I-L Inc. is a member. SABREX (Scientific Approach to Breaking Rock with Explosives) is a modular computer program which incorporates new technology with a number of tested programs that have been in use world wide.SABREX predicts the performance of blasts in terms of (I) fragment size and distribution; (2) muckpile profile and face velocity; (3) grade fracture; (4) collar breakage; (5) a rupture envelope which depicts crack penetration behind and beneath blastholes; and (6) a complete cost analysis including explosives, drilling and accessory costs. The predicted blast results are displayed as dynamic colour graphics and in tabular form.SABREX uses data on the detailed geometry of the drilled and loaded pattern, detonation characteristics of the explosives and the dynamic properties of the rock to generate blast predictions. SABREX blasting calculations take into account the effects that shock and quasi-static pressures exert on the rock around the blastholes. While physical effects occur very rapidly in rock blasting, it is possible to view and model the sequence of events as discrete sections.The program can be run on a microcomputer and is currently operated by C-I-L technical service staff in Canada for the use of drilling and blasting operators.Figure I is a diagram representing the modules of the program and associated technology that is used to complement the program.Any, or all, of the modules may be used in a particular study or blast optimization. Because the BOBCAT module of the SABREX program has been described in previous papers(7.8.9), this discussion will concentrate on the newer modules: CRACK, HEAVE, RUPTURE ENVELOPE and to a limited extent, KUZ-RAM, which present a more detailed picture of the blasting process.Each of these modules is discussed in terms of the information they offer the operator in analyzing the blast. Specific examples of recent usage in Canadian mining situations are included to illustrate the ability of the model to produce practical results that can assist in optimizing actual blasting operations or solving problems that do exist."

During the years 1983-1987, a research programme, jointly performed by the steel producers ARBED, British Steel Corporation, Peine-Salzgitter, Unimetal, and co-sponsored by the European Community for Steel and Coal (ECSC), has been carried out on steel H-piles of different shapes. The initial aim of the testing programme has been the improvement of bearing capacity, both in sandy and clayey soils. At two test sites, standard H-beams are compared to H-piles with different types of laggings or to H-piles grouted both under low and high pressure. In this paper and in view of the open european market in 1992, the H-pile capacities and their corresponding allowable loads, determined from codes, recommendations and computation procedures in use in Belgium/Luxembourg (B/L), France (F), Federal Republic of Germany (G), and the United Kingdom (UK) as well as their evaluation from dynamic CAPWAP and Case methods are compared to the static capacities measured in-situ. In addition, procedures for estimating the load/movement behaviour of H-piles from CPT, pressuremeter, and CAPWAP are compared to the measured curves.

On October 1, 1993 the regulations for assessing and cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts were revised. These new regulations, known as the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (MCP) 310 CMR 40.0000, were developed to keep routine releases out of the regulatory system and rely on private parties to handle most releases without Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) oversight. An integral part of the new MCP is the Licensed Site Professional (LSP). An LSP is required to handle activities and render opinions once a site enters the MCP. These regulations must be adhered to where ever a release has occurred, including construction sites. A brief overview of the new MCP is given below; see attached MCP Flowchart for graphical summary. Entering the MCP Process A release of oil or hazardous material (OHM) to the soil or groundwater above applicable reportable quantities (RQ's) or reportable concentrations (RC's) will require notification to the DEP and compliance with applicable provisions of the MCP. RQ's and RC's are listed in the MCP (310 CMR 40.1600) for most compounds that are typically encountered. For each compound there are two RC's for soil (S-1 and S-2) and two for groundwater (GW-1 and GW-2). The S-1 and GW-1 RC's apply to sites that are environmentally more sensitive, as a result they are lower than the S-2 and GW-2 RC's.

"SynopsisGlow discharge optical emission spectroscopy (GD-OES) is an analytical technique used in the analysis of solid, conducting materials. Though primarily of interest as a depth profiling technique on samples with varying layers of both conducting and non-conducting materials, it is also capable of rapid bulk analysis of homogenous, solid samples. GD-OES combines the advantages of ICP-OES (wide detection range, speed, and lack of interferences) with the solid sampling of XRF techniques. This allows the analyst to not only quantify the elemental composition of a sample, but to evaluate it in terms of homogeneity with depth, a field in which auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) have traditionally been the primary techniques. Although GD-OES does not replace these useful techniques, it does offer various advantages over them, making it an excellent complementary analytical tool.In GD-OES analysis, a low-pressure glow discharge plasma is generated with the sample material acting as a cathode, accelerating the cations in the plasma towards the sample surface. This bombardment causes the sample material to ‘sputter’, essentially knocking free atoms or molecules of analyte material, which are then drawn into the plasma where they are excited. The light emitted by this excitation is then diffracted to separate the wavelengths emitted by the specific elements and detected by a spectrophotometer. The intensity of the signal is directly proportional to the quantity of analyte element present in the sample, allowing simple calibration and quantitative determination of the elements. Technological improvements made in the past twenty years or so have significantly increased the usefulness of GD-OES for surface analysis. Faster plasma stabilization and start-up allow for the quantification of surface layers as thin as 1 nm. Sputter rates have been accurately measured for many common materials, allowing them to be built into software libraries in the instrument’s control software. This dramatically expands the usefulness of this software and the ease of performing analyses.GD-OES analysis of nuclear materials allows for the rapid determination of the elemental composition without the requirement of initial dissolution. The thickness of any corrosion layers on nuclear materials can also be determined."

"Rapid expansion of urban areas dictates the need to expand/rehabilitate the existing buried infrastructure at the same rate. The technical challenges such as variable soil and rock profiles, high groundwater tables and limitations imposed by the built environment combined with present fiscal and schedule limitations necessitates the implementation of fast and cost effective construction methods. Since drilling procedures and equipment allow the construction of overlapped pile systems in almost all subsurface conditions, the secant pile walls have become a cost-effective shoring option for such infrastructure expansion/rehabilitation projects. The secant pile walls constructed in a circular plan layout to form a vertical shaft provide unique advantages since they act as a compression ring. Secant pile walls require stringent drilling tolerances be achieved in order to provide structural support and to work as a compression ring in addition to a groundwater cut-off wall.This paper outlines design methodology, installation procedures and verification techniques used for the secant pile compression ring for the Waterloo Landfill Pumping Station No.2. The secant pile compression ring had a 6m inner diameter with over a 20m wall depth and over 18m excavation depth. The details of subsurface conditions, analytical and numerical methods used in design are presented here. The details of the monitoring system are introduced and results of monitoring are presented and compared with analytically estimated and numerically simulated quantities. The results presented in this study are considered to be of interest to those involved in design and construction of vertical circular shafts."

The design methodology of the planned Second Avenue Subway Project (SAS) led to development of the initial support design to estimate cost and quantities in the Preliminary Engineering (PE) stage. Careful selection of the cavern design rules that recognized the impact of rock quality, rock cover, excavation geometry, and excavation sequence helped to overcome the design challenges of large, shallow caverns for the initial ground support. In the course of the design verification process prescribed by the design methodology, the design team was continuously reviewing and updating the support quantities. The design procedure includes methods using different approaches of empirical, continuum, and discontinuum analyses, which are currently advanced in the Final Engineering (FE) stage. The paper is a continuation of the RETC 2005 “Trials and Tribulations” and focuses on the procedures that led to the changes in the initial support as a result of the ongoing design development.

"The chromite deposits of Red Mountain, 10,miles southeast of Seldovia, Alaska, are in an intrusive of ultramafic rocks. The earliest reference to the deposits was made by U.S. Grant3/; J.B. Mertic, Jr. 4/ made a brief examination in 1917; and A.C. Gill5/ spent 7 weeks studying the ore bodies and geology of the region in 1918. The Federal Geological Survey had a field party in the region from July until September 1940 and the Red Mountain area was mapped and geological data were assembled by P.W. Guild.6/A preliminary investigation of the Kenai chromite deposits was made in July 1941 by R. S. Sanford,7/district engineer of the Bureau of Mines, accompanied by P. W. Guild, assistant geologist of the Geologi¬cal Survey. This was followed by surface sampling and core drilling, which were completed in September 1942 under the direction of John W. Cole,8 associate engineer of the Bureau of Mines. G. O. Gates, associate geologist, and A, B. Unkelsbay, junior geologist, of the Geological Survey, logged cores and interpreted geologic features revealed by Bureau of Mines drilling and trenching.9/J. C. Roehm, associate engineer of the Territorial Department of Mines; examined the Red Mountain area in august 1941.10/Additional exploration of other deposits in. the Red Mountain area was completed during the summer of 194. Work consisted of surface sampling, core drilling, and mapping. G. O. Gates, associate geologist of the Geological Survey, spent 4 days in August investigating results of the Bureau of Mines program.Throughout the exploratory work conducted by the Bureau of Mines the cooperation of Red Mountain Chromite, Inc., and especially of John Blodgett, Jr., and Collis 2, Druley, president and superintendent, respectively, was greatly appreciated. Use of their camp in the Windy River cirque and shops at Kasitsna Bay facilitated the Bureau of Mines program."

Dust emission from blast demolition and other construction activities can be a nuisance; it is widely recognized that fine particles less than 10 µm in equivalent diameter (called PM10) may cause health problems. Mist spray systems, such as rain guns, sprinklers, water/surfactant sprays (or foams) etc., are some of the most effective dust suppression methods. A large amount of research has showed that when water droplets are produced in an equal amount to that of dust particles, the airborne dust is suppressed by the agglomeration of dust and mist particles. A method for generating micro-sized mist from water, achieved by the detonation of explosives in the water tube, was suggested and is called the ‘detonationdriven water bag burst system’. There are many experimentally observed limitations of the explosioninduced water break-up process. The water bag explosion tests were simulated using the AUTODYN software, in order to investigate the aerosolization mechanisms of the detonation-driven water and water break-up process into micron-sized droplets. As a result of the numerical analyses, the diffusion direction of water when detonating in the central interior part of water tube was radioactive and significantly stronger than when detonating in the bottom exterior part; this is due to the compressive flow of the volume change inside of the water tube, which resulted from the blasting wave inside of the tube, as well as the reflected pressure on the ground. Blast tests of full-scaled reinforced concrete columns were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system. The water breakdown and dispersion that occurred while blasting the reinforced concrete columns were observed using a high-speed camera, and dust generation was monitored using four density detectors. The suggested detonation-driven water bag burst system showed that the average dust density decreased by up to 7 mg/m3.

Proper employment of numerical stress analysis design tools is based on the demonstrated ability of a model to capture key elements of the geologic site model and accurately simulate how these elements interact with a mine design. While these tools have progressed markedly, they are, at heart, a gross simplification of the abundant complexity of a natural setting and its response to mining. A generic deep longwall site model was developed that includes aspects of the geology of deep coal mines in the Wasatch Plateau and Book Cliffs coal fields of Utah. The site model contains a set of common features and observations of how these features typically respond to mining. This site model was the basis for evaluating use of empirical, boundary element and volume element stress analysis tools to analyze the distribution of stress around a deep longwall panel. More specifically, this evaluation examined shifting of stress to panel abutments and gob, distribution of stress in the abutment, and deformation and failure of bridging strata. Measurements of abutment stress changes at two sites in the Wasatch Plateau region were used to illustrate model calibration. Overall, these comparisons highlight the considerable differences between methods. Volume element tools can incorporate considerable detail and have fewer underlying assumptions, but this detail carries a considerable computational cost. Boundary element tools are much more efficient. But this efficiency also comes at a cost of added assumptions. These assumptions were challenged by the presence of a strong sandstone unit in the overburden, leading to boundary element results that depart significantly from volume element results. Empirical rules are the simplest, but are even more burdened by assumptions, many of which are implicit in underlying cases. Insight into the nature and impacts of underlying assumptions in each method is essential to proper use of results in mine design. In the absence of any subsequent enactment of mining legislation, the Turkish mining law in effect in 1914, when Iraq became a British mandate, is still operative. The Constitution, or Organic Law, of Iraq, adopted by the Constituent Assembly on July 10, 1924, in articles 113 and 114, provides that:3 Ottoman en laws date and thao remained and lave pub- lished on or after that date and which have remained in force in Iraq u to the time of the publication of this law shall remain in force in Iraq' so far as circumstances permit, subject to any modi- fication or repeal in conformity with the proclamations, regula- tions, and laws referred to in the following article, and until they are altered or repealed by the legislative power or the High Court issues a decision rendering them null and void in accordance with the provisions of article 86. All proclamations, regulations, and laws by the Commander-in- Chief of His Britannic Majesty's Forces in Iraq, the Civil Commis- sioner, and the High Commissioner, and those issued by the Govern- ment of His Majesty King. Faisal, during the period between Novem- ber 5, 1914, and the date of the coming into force of this Consti- tution, shall be considered to be valid as from the date on which they came into force... The performance of an adiabatic calorimeter for measuring heats of oxidation of coal is assessed and suggestions made for its improvement and calibration. The use of magnetic analysers for measuring small oxygen deficiencies in air is described and three different methods of measuring the output for such a meter are characterised. The occurrence of spontaneous heating in an 800 tonne heap of Wyoming coal is briefly described. The major part of the report deals with the oxidation of Pittsburgh seam and Wyoming subbituminous coal and describes an experiment in which 1 tonne of Wyoming coal is stored in a 5 metre long insulated container whilst air was passed through. Temperature rises, rates of oxygen absorption and gas compositions of the air stream were measured. The report relates the results of these-experiments to a theory of spontaneous heating developed by Stott and Quan which stresses the importance of the moisture content of the coal and the relationship between the heat necessary to evaporate this water to the heat available from coal oxidation. The work was carried out over a five month period and the emphasis is on demonstrating the effects of moisture transfer and confirming the theory of Stott and Quan.

Many years ago, a relationship was established between dust inhalation and pneumoconiosis. Since then, various government agencies have regulated crystalline and amorphous forms of silica material in the workplace. In 1987, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified crystalline silica as a probable carcinogen. With this listing, crystalline silica became a regulated substance under the Hazard Communication Standard. The minerals and chemicals industries have responded in various ways. They have: • developed worker and user training programs and literature; • labeled products with appropriate warnings; • continued to implement dust reduction programs; and • developed meaningful epidemiological studies of workers. • begun development of reliable analytical methods for measuring crystalline silica at the 0.1 % threshold level; Background Silicosis historically has been the major health hazard resulting from exposure to crystalline silica. Silicosis is the scarring of the lung from excessive exposure to crystalline silica. It has been recognized as an occupational disease for more than 2000 years, since early Greek physicians noted the respiratory problems of miners, stonecutters, and quarrymen who were exposed to excessive quantities of mineral dust. During the industrial revolution, the incidence of the disease was greatly increased by the use of machinery that increased dust levels. Subsequently, the need for dust control was recognized and measures were instituted. Silicosis is characterized by progressive breathlessness on exertion and develops over the course of years. This bulletin is the third of a series a showing the results of ment purchases of coal according to specifications as to its quality and giving typical forms of proposals for supplying coal and general information relating to government coal purchases . Numerous calls for authentic information concerning the purchase of coal according to its heat value attest a growing interest in the subject. Many of the commodities of life have long been purchased according to specifications requiring chemical or physical tests , or both, to determine whether the material delivered meets the requirements , the price to be paid depending on the results of the tests . Until recent years coal consumers purchased coal merely on the statement of the dealer as to its quality , relying on his integrity and on the reputation of the mine or district from which the coal was obtained. It is surprising that the important question whether value was being received for the money expended was not sooner seriously considered . The purchase of coal by specification is an important step toward the conservation of our national mineral resources , for it results in an increased use of the lower grades of coal. The poorer coals find a market by competing with the better grades , not as to the price per ton but as to the cost of an equal number of heat units. This paper gives in detail the results of government purchases of coal for the fiscal year 1908–9 and the list of contracts with abstracts of specifications for the fiscal year 1909–10 , and summarizes the information on this subject obtained by the Survey. It is hoped that this information will promote a better understanding of the specification method of purchasing coal and furnish data valuable alike to coal dealers and coal consumers , so that equitable contracts can be more readily made.

The Tolukuma gold-silver prospect is located approximately 100km N of Port Moresby in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Epithermal "adularia-sericite" style mineralisation crops out over 1200m within an en echelon quartz veined zone 1 to lOm wide. At a 4g/t cut-off grade, a geological resource of approximately 1.47Mt @ 13.77g/t Au is indicated from 38 diamond drill holes completed since discovery by Newmont Pty Ltd in September 1986. At a regional scale, Tolukuma miner- alisation appears localised in a dilatant zone at the intersection of a 1150 magnetic structure, and the western margin of a N-S trending graben which is filled by a Pliocene volcanic complex contemporaneous with the Mt Davidson Volcanics 30km to the W. A l0km diameter circular Landsat feature, which may reflect magma emplacement at depth, occurs immediately N of Tolukuma and nearby mineralisation. Mineralisation at Tolukuma occurs in sub-vertical quartz veins at, or adjacent to the faulted contact between Pliocene basic and intermediate volcanics/intrusives, and quartz mica schists and phyllites of the Cretaceous Kagi Metamorphics. Most veins display evidence of multiple episodes of brecciation and textures indicative of cyclic boiling, including crustiform rhythmic banding and quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite.

Experimental animal studies comparing asbestos and non-asbestos varieties of tremolite indicate tremolite asbestos is markedly more carcinogenic. By direct analogy, the differences in carcinogenicity between tremolite asbestos and non-asbestos prismatic tremolite should be the same for the other types of amphibole that also crystallize in the asbestos and non-asbestos habits. The earliest of the experiment animal studies, done more than 25 years ago, have design limitations by modern standards including the use of injection or surgical implantation as the route of administration rather than the more relevant route of inhalation. However, the differences in the carcinogenicity of amphibole asbestos and non-asbestos amphiboles are sufficiently large to be clearly discernable even with the study limitations. Together with later studies on these and related minerals, there is strong evidence of a much lower hazard associated with the shorter, thicker fibers of the non-asbestos amphiboles, than is found for the asbestos analogues of the same mineral. It is possible that the non-asbestos amphiboles are no more hazardous than other silicate minerals widely considered nuisance dusts. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. Deep Mix-in-Place soil stabilisation is achieved by forming columns of soil/cement arranged to overlap by secant intersection. Alternate columns are constructed initially and infilled. The cementitious material injected is designed to retard the strength of the resulting mix thereby allowing satisfactory overlapping. Columns are constructed using a designed large diameter mixing auger mounted on a smaller diameter auger stem. This is firstly screwed to the design depth removing only such spoil as to enable penetration of the auger, and subsequently counter rotated and extracted in a predetermined mixing pattern and grout injection rate to ensure continuous and homogeneous treatment through each successive level. The process is performed whilst monitoring auger depth, grout flow and pressure. Cementation Piling and Foundations Limited used this technique to stabilise allu­vium and to facilitate the construction, by conventional techniques, of a circular pumping station pit of 10M diameter to 10M below ground level. The work was carried out within 3M of adjacent domestic properties, and on a very restricted site in Elland, West Yorkshire. Ground conditions consist of 2M of cohesive alluvium becoming water bearing and increasingly sandy and gravelly with cobbles which overlies the mudstones at 10.0m depth. Sandstones beneath formed an aquiclude to artesian ground water with the underside of the open excavation approxi­mately 1.0M from the top of this material. Peripheral treatment into the mudstone, coupled with pressure relief wells, proved successful and final excavation depth was achieved in "the dry".

The proper selection of a coal for a particular use depends on knowledge of fundamental data concerning the coals that offer, particularly their type and rank. Type of coal depends on the nature of the original plants and the environment in which they accumulated.Rank reflects the subsequent metamorphism of the coal, and is of two kinds-physical rank and chemical rank.INTRODUCTIONIn the different coalfields of the Commonwealth of Australia there occur many different kinds of coal which provide the coal-research worker with a wide range of material, but to the fuel technologist they represent complex problems in utilization.In the past it has been common practice to instal coal-using equipment of a design based on plant used in large industrial centres of other countries and then search for supplies of suitable coal. This has led to the transportation of coal mainly from New South Wales to other States, which have inadequate supplies of coal suitable for use in the equipment they have installed. However, modern economy and industrial practice demand local resources of coal for the development of industry, transport and domestic services, and a change in the old order is rapidly taking place. Technologists and engineers are now faced with the problem of designing and installing equipment to use whatever kind of coal is available in local coalfields.Much has been accomplished in this direction and important investigations are at present being carried out, but there still remains a wide field of problems for research.In planning and carrying out investigations into coal utilization it is essential that fundamental data and knowledge should be available and that its significance should be appreciated.

The Iron Ore Company of Canada has successfully employed advanced process control (APC) to optimize the operation of their induration machines. A significant increase in machine throughput and a reduction in fired pellet quality giveaway were observed following the APC implementation on all six machines. This paper discusses the opportunity for process control optimization in induration, reviews the property estimation and multivariable control technologies, and describes how the IOCC control strategy captured this opportunity. APC performance data is presented. The dependence of APC performance on control room operator acceptance, process equipment and instrumentation is highlighted.
