The problem of reliable extreme event modeling of large diameter piles under enormous structural or kinematic loads has gained more attention in recent years. In particular, the soil response around the foundation and impacts to buried adjacent infrastructure has gained interest. One of the principal shortcomings with analysis of large diameter pile foundations under extreme event lateral loading is the reliance on conventional beam on elastic foundation methods, which do not model the soil field response around the pile. These methods are limited for large displacement problems, and for large diameter piles. However, the fundamental interactions between steel and concrete, and structure to soil are difficult to constrain, especially in large strain problems where the structural elements become inelastic. The non-linear interaction of the structural materials and soil is desirable so that assessment of stress changes in the field and effects on adjacent facilities can be modeled. A numerical modeling methodology that addresses these shortcomings has been developed. This method utilizes the interaction of brittle concrete with discrete steel reinforcing and casing in a robust manner capturing inelastic non-linearity in both soil and structure. This paper presents a comparison study of the method, wherein three different validation studies were made to data from full scale laterally loaded pile testing. INTRODUCTION Extreme event lateral loading of deep foundations comes in many forms including earthquakes, landsliding, tsunamis, hurricanes, surface fault rupture, liquefaction induced lateral spreads and many more. These extreme events induce loads on foundations far greater than service or strength loads. Perhaps the most dangerous extreme event loads are those of large soil displacements such as landslides, lateral spreads, and surface fault rupture, wherein the soil surrounding the foundations can move laterally 100 mm to 3 m! In these extreme event loading scenarios, small diameter foundations are pushed past their limits and many engineers prefer large diameter deep foundations for these situations. These deep foundations of diameter 900 mm or greater may be auger cast in place piles, cast in drilled hole piles, cast in steel shell piles, cased or uncased drilled shafts, bored precast piles, etc. For convenience in this paper, large diameter deep foundations will be referred to as Large Diameter Shafts (LDS). In LDS, steel may or may not used as a shell around the perimeter of the concrete and/or as internal tensile reinforcement. The interaction between brittle concrete and ductile steel within and/or along the perimeter of the LDS is critical to understanding the non-linear inelastic behavior of LDS for problems of large lateral displacements from extreme events.

Data used for the analysis are actual plant data collected over the past two years of operation. Facts obtained from the study will be helpful for smelter management to control these components in the flash smelting furnace feed and slag, to levels which will enable better control of copper in slag, and smoother operation of the KCM slag-cleaning furnace.

Heavy metal-containing wastewater from hydrometallurgical processes of lead-zinc was treated by biologics in a 200 m3/h industrial scale experiment. The result shows that Zn concentration declined from 50.28 mg/L~240.81 mg/L to 0.21 mg/L~1.98 mg/L, Pb from 1.00 mg/L~13.47 mg/L to 0.083 mg/L~0.71 mg/L, Cu from 0.24 mg/L~2.38 mg/L to 0.059 mg/L~0.40 mg/L, Cd from 2.12 mg/L~23.47 mg/L to 0.011 mg/L~0.071 mg/L and As from 0.50 mg/L~6.00 mg/L to 0.005 mg/L~0.10 mg/L. The concentrations of the above heavy metals in the treated water were lower than that in Integrated Wastewater Discharge Standard (GB8978~1996) in China. Furthermore, the treated wastewater was recycled and reused in smelter plant. Zinc content in hydrolytic sludge reached up to 34.04%, which indicates that this sludge can be used to recover valuable metals.

In order to maintain a production rate of 6,000 tonnes per day from underground at the Williams Operating Corporation, two independent mining areas were required which created a long narrow sill pillar between them. During initial mining of the sill pillar there were a number of significant ground falls [LeBlanc and Murdoch, 2000] and in March 1999, with no active mining ongoing in the sill pillar area, a rockburst of magnitude 3.0 Nuttli occurred. Extensive ground support was designed and installed to withstand events of similar magnitude [Bawden and Jones, 2002]. A mine wide microseismic system was installed to monitor mine induced seismic behaviour over the entire mine. The area most directly affected by the 1999 rockburst was rehabilitated using a highly ductile support design. Along with microseismic instrumentation, the areas were instrumented using conventional SMART Cables and SMART MPBX?s. Subsequent to this, the area was impacted by a large number of high magnitude seismic events [magnitudes between 1.7 and 3.5 Nuttli]. The ground support performed very well during these events, providing confidence in the mine?s ability to control the ground under severe rockburst conditions. Analyses of microseismic and conventional instrumentation, combined with numerical analyses of sequence alternatives, were used to develop an optimal mining strategy for the sill pillar area. The selected strategy involved utilization of instrumentation data and calibrated model results to analyze yield zones in the sill. The analyzed ?yielded? zones were assessed to be low seismic risk. Initial mining in the sill was then concentrated in these low risk areas, with the objective of further concentrating stress into the remaining seismically active area, in order to induce ultimate failure of the sill. Continuing large magnitude seismicity and resulting damage in the remaining ?high seismic risk? area, led to abandoning a second portion of the footwall access and the strategic decision to extract a stope near the centre of this zone in order to force final failure of the sill pillar. During execution of this plan two large magnitude seismic events occurred resulting in destressing and final failure of the remaining sill pillar. The paper provides a detailed description of this ?strategic mine sequence driven self-destressing process? and the implications to final extraction planning in this area of the mine.

Chlorine-containing minerals are commonly present in coal. Associated minerals such as pyrite can undergo exothermic reactions. Consequently, it is of great significance to study the effect of inorganic chloride on the spontaneous combustion of coal. In this study, the effects of five inorganic chlorides (sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, potassium chloride, calcium chloride, and zinc chloride) on the spontaneous oxidation of coal were investigated. Analysis of the gaseous products of coal oxidization at low temperatures (323K to 453K) showed that the presence of inorganic chlorine in coal markedly decreases O2 consumption and the generation of CO and CO2. Samples of raw coal and chlorine-loaded coal were oxidized for 36 hours under the same experimental conditions. Infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy results showed that inorganic chloride can inhibit the oxidative decomposition of some functional structure components (methyl, methylene, methine, and hydroxy) in the coal. The influence of inorganic chloride on the oxidation characteristics of the functional groups in coal during spontaneous combustion was investigated using benzyl alcohol and 1-phenylpropanol as model compounds, which were tested under the same experimental conditions as the coal samples. The oxygen consumption of model compounds with and without the addition of inorganic chloride further suggested that inorganic chloride may hinder the oxygenolysis of these structures during low-temperature oxidation. This phenomenon can be attributed to the radical reaction from the perspective of radical chemistry. It can therefore be concluded that inorganic chlorides play an inhibitory role in the spontaneous combustion of coal.

Common offset seismic data collected over two active longwall panels at different stages of mining reveal that significant arrival time delays are produced in reflections from different levels within the mine cover. Mining-induced arrival time delays are also observed beyond the edges of the mine over unmined areas. Reflection arrival time delays increase with reflector depth and are laterally variable. The arrival time delays are produced by reductions of seismic velocity within the overburden. Reflection arrival time delays from a major strong unit located neutrally within the cover are proportional to subsidence, however, delays in other events are not.

An assessment of potential groundwater movement beneath the tailing impoundment at the Red Dog Mine was performed, and has indicated a unique aquifer situation within sub-permafrost groundwater at the site. The aquifer was shown to be isolated from both vertical recharge and a real discharge, and is characterized as a virtually no-flow system. The permafrost resulted in a deep aquifer with high tidal efficiency, meaning that variable surface loads are easily transmitted to the fluid. The tidal efficiency has been characterized through analysis of water level fluctuations that respond to earth tides, barometric pressure loads, and loading from the pond.

Recent litigation in Pennsylvania between three coal-mining companies and a private water company resulted in the payment by the coal companies of the equivalent of about $500,000 to buy a new water supply to replace that which had been damaged by acid drainage from strip mining. An investigation of the relevant facts indicates that the water could have been treated by spending about $40,000 on equipment and $15,000 yearly for chemicals, labor, and power until the contamination could be reduced about 80 pct. The water company's supply, furthermore, had deteriorated largely by reason of dry weather before stripping was begun by the coal companies. Payment to the water company should not have exceeded $300,000 and could have been as low as $100,000. Strip mining of coal is common in Pennsylvania. The most important objection to it in Pennsylvania is generally acid pollution of runoff water. An outline of the methods, therefore, that could be used to reduce such pollution, to compare acid-contaminated waters, and to treat such waters to make them satisfactory for public and industrial use is worth-while. The watershed of the West P~M Water Co. covers about 4.5 square miles, 20 miles west of Pittsburgh, and has two 90,000,000 gal reservoirs sup- plying about 1,300,000 gal daily for public and industrial use of which 450,000 gal daily are for two railroads. The reality of rising electrical power costs and the haunting prospect of decreasing electrical power availability are a threat to the growth of new projects and expansion programmes that could negatively affect the sustainability of mining operations. These threats require the adoption of effective power saving measures aimed at three principal objectives: the elimination of wastage, the reduction of power usage particularly during peak demand periods and, more importantly, improving the efficiency of high power-demand processes. It is reasonable to assume that the greatest impact will be achieved by concentrating on those processes that are large electrical power consumers. For Anglo Platinum operations, mine ventilation and, currently to a lesser extent, mine cooling are two continuous processes that fall in this category. It is estimated that these may consume fifteen to thirty-five per cent of the power delivered to the shaft head-depending on the shaft's design. Mine ventilation systems suffer from inherent, historical inefficiencies that lead to excessive power consumption. Air cooling systems are designed to be energy-wise in terms of modulating refrigeration plant operation to meet the underground requirements while maximizing use of 'free' cooling from surface conditions. Currently about ninety-five per cent of the refrigeration capacity used in Anglo Platinum mines is dedicated to surface bulk air coolers. The net thermal efficiency of these systems is compromised as mines expand in depth and on strike. Looking to the future, this practice will be complemented by more energy demanding underground cooling tactics requiring considerably higher electrical power consumption per unit ton produced. To counter this increase in power consumption, more energy-efficient systems and advantageous transient strategies such as thermal storage and the use of ice-on surface and possibly even underground-are being considered. This paper describes work currently undertaken and planned by Anglo Platinum operations to reduce power consumption by main fans during off-shift periods, the associated efforts currently introduced to reduce underground air leakage, the possibility of introducing more efficient auxiliary ventilation systems, the feasibility of thermal storage, and a brief look at energy recovery system as a means of countering the anticipated power demand associated with underground cooling. THOUGH the literature on the chamber process is considerable, it mostly refers to European conditions. Owing to the demand for acid for flotation and leaching at the mine, it may be necessary to work the process under other conditions. Consequently, some results obtained during the chlorination days at Mount Morgan, within the Tropic of Capricorn, may be useful for reference when working in a similar climate. Though the chambers must be protected against tropical storms, thorough ventilation should be provided, with plenty of space between the chambers, which are almost invariably crowded together. Not only does the space assist in the cooling of the chambers, but it is very desirable during repairs, when lead andtimber have to be hoisted up. The connecting flues between the chambers, which are fairly efficient mixers and condensers, should be round, supported from above, and with the least possible timber about them. Their position and arrangement deserve careful attention. Lattice work will be sufficient protection for the sides of the chambers, and the roof should be high and well ventilated. The Mount Morgan plant, crowded and not well situated, consisted of seven chambers (four over 50 ft. in length), one Glover tower 7 ft. 2 in sq. x 20 ft. high, one Gay Lussac 9 ft. sq. x 30 ft. higb, also one 5 ft. diam. x 25 ft. high. There was one pipe column 4: ft. sq. x 14 ft. 6 in. high. The chambers were run as one unit, and were much lower than those usually constructed in Europe-less than 15 ft. high. Provided that suitable timber can be obtained, 20 ft. is quite low enough. It should be quite satisfactory to use round poles for the studs, and so admit more air space between studs andlead.

AS a portion of a general study of liquid-metal thermodynamics, high-temperature galvanic cells were used to study the effect of added dilute solutes on the activity of zinc in dilute solution with molten bismuth in the range 450° to 650°C. 1,2 The cells were of the type The experimental procedures have been described previously.1 In the course of studies conducted in the bismuth-rich corner of the systems Bi-Zn-Au and Bi-Zn-Cu, marked discontinuities were observed in the electromotive force-temperature relations for a number of the experimental compositions. Above the discontinuity temperatures, the relations, which were linear, exhibited slopes similar to the binary alloy of the same mole fraction zinc, as shown in Figs. I and 2. Below the discontinuity temperatures, the slopes were markedly different, but the relations remained linear. In general, as the amount of the third eletnent was increased, the slope of the lower portion of the relations tended to become less positive. The slopes of electromotive force-temperature relations reflect the entropy of mixing of zinc and, therefore, the occurrence of a discontinuity marks the transition between two different equilibrium situations involving the solution of zinc. A number of other investigators3-5 have used such observations to determine liquidus boundaries in binary alloys. Since the upper portions of the ternary electromotive force-temperature relations of this study had the same slopes as the binary alloys, the discontinuities are interpreted as marking the transition between the single-phase liquid region and the underlying two- and three-phase regions. Reference to the Zn-Bi equilibrium diagram6 confirms that the binary alloys were single-phase liquids at the experimental temperatures. Fig. I shows the electromotive force-temperature relations for the alloys containing Bi-Zn-Au and Fig. 2 shows similar relations for the Bi-Zn-Cu alloys. In the lower portion of each figure, the temperature of the discontinuity is plotted vs the mole fraction of the added solute at the various levels of zinc concentra- tion. Cross-plots from these curves at constant temperature permitted the construction of the partial liquidus surface isotherms shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

Because of complex geological environments, a number of coal reserves occur in inclined or dipping coal seams in certain parts of the world. Longwall top coal caving using split-level a singleentry panel system (SSPS) has been widely used for extracting such coal seams with large thicknesses (greater than 6 m) in China because SSPS can reduce or mitigate problems of coal outbursts, gate road deformations, overturning of shields, downhill sliding of shearer and armored face conveyor (AFC), and so forth, during mining of inclined coal seams. Depth of yield is the range of yield coal from the rib of the pillar to the boundaries where yield ends. It plays a significant role in maintaining the gate pillar stability. This paper presents a study on the stability of an unconventional water-obstruction gate pillar (UWGP) formed by SSPS to prevent water inrush in mining of an inclined thick coal seam in a coal mine in China. As the shape of this pillar is non-cuboidal, nonparallelepiped, a conventional empirical or analytical method is not applicable for studying its stability.

Ground fault and overcurrent protection criteria for coal mine a.c. distribution systems were examined under a Bureau of Mines funded investigation. The report begins with a literature review which discusses relaying topics including instrument transformers, ground-fault pickup methods, static relaying, and comparison of relaying techniques. A chapter on ground-fault relaying provides recommendations for maximum and minimum pickup levels as a function of maximum ground current and power system line-to-ground capacitance. Research in the area of phase overcurrent protection has resulted in a complete set of procedural recommendations for the selection and setting of overcurrent relays and current transformers, molded-case circuit breakers, and distribution system fuses in coal mine power systems. The final chapter, which discusses relay system maintenance, introduces a unique test set which was developed by KETRON and used to test the performance of relaying systems in coal mines.

"Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

Cobalt/tungsten mineralization at Mt. Cobalt, located 170 km southeast of Mt. Isa in northwestern Queensland, is described. Mineralization occurs in the Kuridala Formation of the Mary Kathleen Group, which is composed dominantly of pelitic schists, carbonates and acid and basic volcanics.Rocks in the region are metamorphosed to amphibolite facies and affected by two generations of tight to isoclinal folds and a third, more open generation of folds. The region is divided into three meridionally trending belts on the basis of structural style, with mineralization concentrated in the central, more highly strained belt.Deformation and metamorphism is probably younger than 1670 m.a., and the rocks are intruded by granitic rocks dated at 1509 ± 22 m.a.Mineralization occurs in shear zones at the contact between an amphibolite and enclosing pelitic schists, and within the amphibolite itself. Mineralization consists of cobaltite and scheelite with lesser chalcopyrite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, i1menite, allanite, xenotime and apatite. The mineralizing event involved addition of K, Cl, CO2 W, As, Cu, Ni, Au and rare earths and depletion of Ca and Na. It altered a hornblendeandesine/labradorite host assemblage to a biotiteoligoclase/andesine-scapolite assemblage. Though tourmalinealteration also occurs, it is probably not related to mineralization.It is concluded that the mineralization and alteration assemblages formed by reaction of saline fluids with amphibolite close to the peak of amphibolite facies metamorphism.The fluids are probably metamorphically derived, and their movement was channelled through high strain zones in the sequence. The material carried by the fluids was derived from the metasedimentary/metavolcanic pile as a whole.Other deposits in the Mt. Cobalt-Selwyn area have characteristics comparable with Mt. Cobalt, and the mechanism for the genesis of Mt. Cobalt may have applications at other areas in the region.

"The number of investigations reported during the past year indicates that control of the health hazard due to abnormal air conditions is still a matter of serious consideration in the mining, metallurgical, and allied industries.Australia. - In an investigation into the health and working conditions of employees in the mining industry of Tasmania and Victoria3, it was found that although pulmonary tuberculosis may occur early in life, silicosis is e disease of slow evolution and does not appear frequently under the ace of 40. A period of at least ten years in the industry was found necessary to produce silicosis, and in no case was the disease found in those who had not worked underground. A very high incidence of silicosis was found in all fields among those who had worked underground 20 years and longer. There was some evidence that silicosis complicated by tuberculosis may occur earlier than uncomplicated silicosis.England. - In a paper presented before the Section on Occupational Diseases of the British Medical Association, Dr. E. L. Middleton, the medical inspector of factories, called attention4 to the occurrence of silicosis in various industries throughout the country.punitive on some quite harmless industries. Thus Middleton says: ""Where the amount of dust is small the action of the phagocytes is likely to be effective, but where it is great . . ."" What dosage is indicated by ""small"" and ""great"" in this connexion? If the meaning of ""small"" were known, would it be correct to go on to say, as he does, ""each successive dose of silica produces a summation of effects""? Then, again, would it be fair to say ""a comparatively brief period of exposure may be the only determining factor""? What, in minutes, hours, or days per week, per month,' or year, is intended by ""a comparatively brief period""? ""Intermittency of the process"" is another expression used in summing up the reasons for and against a standardization of air purity by a gravimetric process or enumeration of the particles; the arguments against such a standardization are, by Middleton, considered strong, but they are by no means convincing to us. A standard has been accepted in respect of the amount of lead in milligrams per 10 cubic metres of air; Dr. Ronald Lane showed in another paper read that adherence to this makes the occurrence of poisoning highly improbable. Mavrogordato has placed on record figures of silica dust at different stages of the improvements in the workings of the Rand mines, and such a control is in constant operation in them today.We emphasize these points because apparently the Government has taken the unusual course of legislating first and postponing inquiry to a later date, as in the ""Various Industries (Silicosis) Scheme, 1939."" The insurance companies also have a considerable interest in the matter of compensation for the silicosis risk. Where exposure - as in the refractories industries, the grinding industries, sandstone industry, and pottery industry - is day in and day out, they rightly demand a premium far higher than for any other disease scheduled under the Workmen's Compensation Act - 5 per cent on the wages bill. row every industrial employer, such as the paint and varnish manufacturer, who has a sack of crushed silica in his store .room, from which he extracts once a week enough to make a paste With spirit and add to his other ingredients in order to give them the necessary ""bite,"" becomes involved, and may have to abandon the use of the material or pay 8 per cent on his wages bill for an absolutely negligible risk.. For the roadway design in the German hard coal mining industry, an advanced combined planning system has been applied during the past 20 years. The German mining industry is working with single entry roadways system. After first longwall passage the roadways will be stabilised with side wall building material packages. Later this roadway will be used again for the second retreating longwall. The intention of the implementation of several different design methods for the planning of the roadways is to enhance the reliability of the results. On one hand the planning system uses numerical simulation and physical modelling in addition to analytical and empirical methods. On the other hand in-situ monitoring and analysis during the roadway development will be used to verify and calibrate the numerical and physical models. Especially before the implementation of new support elements in underground, this system is suitable and reasonable because the new support elements will be tested in the physical and numerical simulation prior to cost intensive underground tests. The interaction between the numerical and physical modelling in comparison with underground monitoring and analysis during development and the later use of roadways will be shown with some examples. The first example shows a rock bolted rectangular roadway which will be mined at both sides of the roadway. Different support and roadway building material package systems are investigated under various stress conditions. The results are utilised to optimise the roadway support and the roadway side package systems. The influence of different points in time of the installation of several support elements in a combined arch and bolted roadway is shown as another example. Two different types of support systems are compared within the physical models. These models are used as a base for ongoing numerical analysis and simulation to find out the ideal point of time to assemble the different support elements. The last example handles the influence of slickensides in the roof of arch shaped roadway on their stability. Different slickenside positions and densities are investigated and classified.
