The paper is a general review of practice in design of sub-level open stopes in Northern Rhodesian copper mines and gives examples of some interesting developments during the last five or six years. It discusses the effect of hangingwall subsidence and the methods used to combat rock pressure on working areas.INTRODUCTIONAll producing mines on the Northern Rhodesian Copperbelt have large ore reserves and are designed for high rates of production. The coal mining industry in the western United States is seeing the same boom as the rest of the country and the world. Most coal mines in the West are operating flat out as the nation’s appetite for energy continues to grow. And many of the coal mines have either increased their production capacities or are in the process of doing so. However, transportation issues along with environmental restrictions are keeping many mines from expanding even further. Some coal companies held off on further expansion plans until Congress and President Bush could agree on a national energy policy, one that recognizes coal as the nation’s leading source of electricity. In August, Congress passed and the president signed into law such a measure (see Washington Survey, page 7). The legislation includes research funding for clean coal technologies. So western and eastern coal could become even more important in the national energy picture. This is particularly true as supplies of natural gas diminish and the price of oil continues to increase.

Nowadays mining projects are seeking new versions of evaluation that are based on the flexibility in the project. Real option valuation (ROV) is one of the modern evaluation methods that provides a tool to adapt and revise mining projects under uncertainty and future variable movements. Most evaluation approaches simply assume that some variables are fixed, such as production rate, variable cost, fixed cost and lifetime of project. The first section of this paper reviews a comprehensive study of ROV in mining projects. The paper then introduces a new model that solves problems where previous methods lacked. The new method endeavours to find maximum mining project value by adding total cost as a function of production rate into ROV. The second section has been applied to a new model on the Century zinc mine in north-west Queensland, thus illustrating the future overview of that mine. The new version of ROV gave a significant positive value for the Century Mine, when the closure and reopening options where available throughout the life of the mine. Consequently, the new method evaluates real options to add value to mining projects, maximising projectÆs value, estimating cost function, optimising production rates and offers opportunities in projects to amplify gains or to mitigate losses.

The current commodity boom is depleting the ore bodies at a rate not seen in the past. As the existing ore bodies get depleted, only the more inferior bodies are left for exploitation. This places an emphasis on beneficiation to upgrade the lower grade ore to high-grade feedstock for downstream processes. This paper discusses the role of dense medium separation in this quest for high-grade feedstock for the future. It covers the production and utilization of ferrosilicon and gives a future perspective of the technology. It concludes about the way ahead and the challenges facing the processing fraternity and mining industry.

Peng The highlights of this paper are : • The shield supports with lemniscate links will exert a tangential force on the roof strata, causing unnecessary and harmful roof movements, thus damaging the roof structure. The principal source of the tangential force is the horizontal movement of the point O, the pivotal joint between the canopy and the caving shield. When the support height is changed during setting, the point O will move along a curve upward and rearward toward the gob. As a result, it produces a vertical movement, causing the roof to move up a distance of ?d, and a horizontal movement toward the gob, creating vertical fractures in the roof. • The major purpose for employing the lemniscate-link system is to protect the hydraulic legs against the action of the bending moments induced by the tangential force that causes deformation or destruction of the legs. • Based on these two points, the author suggested that, in order to eliminate the harmful effects of the lemniscate-link system and strengthen its advantageous features, a shield support with a new design of that mechanism has been developed. With the new design, the conventional rigid lemniscate links are replaced by hydraulic rams. When the pressure inside the rams reaches a certain level, the ram will yield.

Metal clusters exhibit unique size-dependent physical and chemical properties that differ from those of bulk materials or large particles. Here we discuss recent theoretical investigations of the catalytic properties of free and MgO-supported gold clusters. The catalytic activity of gold clusters depends sensitively on the environment, charge state, and chemical composition of the catalyst. Relativistic bonding effects stabilize large planar structures for gas-phase gold clusters, and non-compact ?quasiplanar? structures are present as important isomers also for surface-supported clusters. The hybridization of the atomic 5d and 6s states is significantly enhanced by the relativistic effects, and large spatial variations in the nature of the local electronic structure make the low-coordinated gold atoms preferable adsorption sites for oxygen molecules. The adsorbed oxygen molecules are activated to superoxo- and peroxo-states via charge-transfer from gold, and Eley-Rideal and Langmuir-Hinshelwood reactions with CO proceed via low-barrier formation of intermediates, which do not require O-O dissociation as precursors. This facilitates the low-temperature (below 300 K) activity of gold nanocatalysts in CO oxidation. Other gold nanostructures, such as mono-atomic gold nanowires, may also become important prototype systems in chemical sensing and nanocatalysis; here we show that they are active promoters of hydrogen dissociation.

Keywords: accurate control, matte level, smelting operations, process control, tapping, sounding bar, electromagnetic measurement [ ] Accurate control of matte levels during primary matte smelting operations is desirable in order to improve process decision-making. High matte levels in the vessel could have to disastrous consequences, particularly in the new generation of intensive smelting furnace with deep-cooled copper coolers. Knowing when to commence tapping and a better understanding of melt times can only be improved if the furnace levels are monitored correctly. At Lonmin Marikana Smelter Division it has long been understood that the matte level information being provided by the manual sounding bar is only as good as the operators? following of measurement procedure, their skill in assessing what the sounding bar is displaying, and their individual interpretation of what they are looking at. This paper sets out to show how this problem was identified as an area of major concern to the plant, how a solution was sought and how an electromagnetic measurement system was installed as an alternative measurement to the matte sounding bar system. Other areas discussed in the paper are the difficulties to be overcome when first installing new equipment and how these teething problems were solved by close co-operation between Lonmin and equipment suppliers, which led to some design modifications to the delivery system. In conclusion the paper discusses the results between the electromagnetic measurement and the manual sounding measurement and how best to integrate the generated data into the plant?s process control system for improved decision making.

As open pit mines continue to grow deeper and productivity continues to increase, the management of respirable dust and noxious gases can become a challenge. The natural wind flow in open pit mines is often recirculatory. This recirculation traps dust and gases in deep open pit mines. This problem is particularly acute in high latitude open pit mines due to a phenomenon known as an atmospheric inversion. In the winter, arctic and subarctic regions experience short days and long nights. This deficit of solar radiation creates a situation in which cold, still air accumulates near the bottom of the pit. In open pit mines, this can result in unhealthy accumulations of gases and other contaminants in the open pit mines. In this study, the natural wind flow patterns in and around open pit mines were investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program. Two dimensional models were created for a variety of pit geometries. The effect of depth, slope angle, and wind speed on the recirculation pattern in the pit was examined.

A common problem encountered in British coal mines is bearing failure on conveyor system idler rollers, which on occasions has led to fires. The UK Mines Inspectorate initiated a study of such failures to assess the potential for ignition of explosive atmospheres. As part of this study HSL have developed a system to measure the temperatures generated within the bearings during controlled failure. Temperatures are measured using both infrared thermal imaging and contact thermometry. The work to date has shown that temperatures well in excess of the auto-ignition temperature of methane can occur.

This report describes the preparation characteristics of the more significant coalbeds in Butler County, Pa. It is one of a series planned to determine which coals are suitable for producing metallurgical coke, either as mined or after beneficiation. More than 2 million tons of coal was produced in Butler County in 1958, of which about 25 percent was cleaned mechanically in four cleaning plants. Updating the 1942 coal-reserve estimates made by Ashley to December 31, 1958, more than 1,266 million tons of recoverable coal reserves remain in the county in beds that arc 24 inches or more thick. The Upper and Lower Freeport, Upper, Middle, and Lower Kittanning, Clarion, and Brookville beds were selected on the basis of production and estimated minable reserves. Sample locations were chosen after a study of the literature, conferences with mining engineers and mining company officials in the field, and examination of the available sites. Four samples each were collected from the Upper Freeport and Middle Kittanning beds, three samples from the Brookville bed, two, samples from the Upper Kittanning bed, and one sample each from the Lower Freeport, Lower Kittanning, and Clarion beds.

The disasters between 1920 and 1979 in coal mines in Queensland and New South Wales due to underground fire, gas or coal dust explosion or to gas or coal outbursts, have been assessed. The evidence relating to disasters caused by gas explosion points strongly to divergence from safe mining practice as the main cause. There is a need for greater training and education of personnel, closer analysis of gas reports, better monitoring and testing procedures, improved ventilation standards and a policy where safe working practice is actively encouraged. Conditions in the New South Wales occurrences of gas explosion were similar to those at Collinsville, Queensland in that dykes, igneous sills, burnt out coal and faulting were common to all. Information on outbursts indicates that contributing factors were intrusions, depth of cover, fault zones and other geological disturbances, methods of work, pressure and type of gas.

An electrochemical study of the dissolution of gold in aerated cyanide solution shows that the dissolution rate is determined by the nature of the surface. A passive film (probably a basic cyanide) formed at -0·6 V vs a saturated calomel electrode inhibits both the anodic dissolution of gold and the cathodic reduction of oxygen. Thallium has an "activating" effect on these reaction mechanisms.INTRODUCTIONIn general the dissolution rate of a solid in a liquid is studied by weight loss measurements or analysis of the solution at known time intervals. However, if the solid is a metallic conductor, on which a redox reaction can occur at the metal-solution interface, it can be studied by electrochemical techniques. One of the most prospective undeveloped greenstone belts in Canada, the Hope Bay greenstone belt extends over 80km in a north-south direction and is between 7 and 20km wide. The belt lies on the arctic coast and comprises mafic meta-volcanic and meta-sedimentary rocks that are bounded by Archean granite intrusives and gneisses. The greenstone package has been deformed during multiple events and is transected by major northsouth trending shear zones that appear to exert a significant control on the localization of mineralization. The Hope Bay belt contains a number of significant gold deposits hosted in a typical Archean greenstone belt and which occur in several geologic settings, including shear-hosted, lode-style and breccia-associated. Combined, the deposits host a measured and indicated resource of 1.6 million oz of gold averaging 15.7 g/t plus an inferred resource of 2.7 million oz of gold averaging 12.3 g/t. All deposits remain open to expansion. Exploration in the period 2000-2002 by Miramar includes more than 110,000m of drilling to more fully define the nature of the known deposits, while regional exploration has focused on identifying and evaluating new targets. In carrying out its programs, Miramar uses a number of techniques to improve its chances of exploration success. Activity in 2003 includes 43,000m of drilling focused on expanding resources in the Madrid area, testing the Boston deposit at depth and continuing the hunt for more discoveries. Meanwhile Miramar is advancing one of the deposits towards a production decision, based on a low capital, high return development scenario.

K.A. Grace's article advocates usage of the terms describing resources as defined by the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) and the US Geological Survey (USGS). Originally recommended in 1943, the terms were revised in 1976 and again in 1980. Mr. Grace further recommends that the term reserves should be severely restricted and that it should encompass mining and processing factors. The list of references quoted in the article does not, however, mention the study concerning reserves that was made over a period of almost four years by a joint Committee on Definitions. This committee was sponsored by three societies - the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical, and Petroleum Engineers (AIME), the Society of Economic Geologists (SEG), and the American Institute of Professional Geologists (AIPG). Most of the detailed work was done by a working party appointed by the Society of Mining Engineers (SME) of AIME. After studying previous definitions in the US as well as in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, France, and other European countries, the following definitions were proposed and accepted in 1974 by the SME board of directors. (Ore reserve definitions in Rhodesia, South Africa, or New Zealand were not mentioned as having been reviewed.) Table 1 lists definitions from MINING ENGINEERING, July 1975. Notice in Table 1 it was mentioned, under Resources, that the definitions of reserves were recommended for the purposes of commercial evaluation. It was further stated that the terminology adopted by the USBM and the USGS, as released to the public, covering resources, was recognized as such. Mr. Grace also recommends that reserve calculations should allow for future losses in ore tonnage, ore grade, milling, and smelting. Unfortunately, it might take years to develop a prospect after it has been discovered. Mining methods have to be tested before being finalized in order to know what tonnage of ore is going to be lost, or how much dilution is likely to occur. The same problems are present in concentrating or in smelting. Operating mines usually know how mined grade compares with ore reserve grade. They can usually predict fairly closely what their final metal recoveries are probably going to be. It is, however, expecting too much to have to delay quoting reserves from say a recently drilled prospect. Any responsible mining geologist or mining engineer (or company for that matter) should state several things about an ore reserve calculation: that it is or is not a preliminary estimate only; that estimated grades have not been diluted to allow for a future, as yet unknown, mining method; that metal recoveries are or are not only tentative, based perhaps on drill hole samples only or on no metallurgical testing at all. Reserves of a partially explored prospect are always quoted when it becomes necessary to raise capital. If they are described as preliminary only (really just tonnage and grade estimates and not true "reserves") in addition to being accompanied by some of the items just mentioned, nobody is going to be misled. If, on the other hand, a report by a member of the SME or SEG is intentionally misleading, the individual must be reported and eventually disbarred from his or her society. To summarize, let us stay with the definitions of ore, ore reserves, and related terms as recommended and accepted by SME. I might add that on occasion I have used a fourth category in my ore reserve calculations, namely Geologically Possible Ore. This category is more or less the same as Inferred ore defined by the USBM and USGS. I have never given a grade to this category, which may be based only on geological mapping, geochemical sampling, or geophysical traversing.

"Although ore sorting in mining is not a new concept, sensor-based sorting has failed to gain broad acceptance due to perceived challenges with the technology. In order to gain wider applications, this research focuses on treating waste rock and low-grade ore to identify and test appropriate sensors and to evaluate the response. Results showed that amenability of rocks to sensor-based ore sorting is both sensor and ore specific. It was also observed that the efficiency (recovery) of sorting is directly influenced by the degree of heterogeneity of the rocks. The overall outcome showed that with the right sensor, several of the materials tested are amenable to sensor-based ore sorting. Mining companies could benefit from multiple economic and design impacts, such as lower energy cost, lower transportation costs, higher metal recoveries and smaller footprints that lead to more sustainable mining. This paper will focus on the effects of heterogeneity of rocks on sorting potential and efficiency.IntroductionSensor-based ore sorting has been attracting more attention since the pressure for effective resource extraction and management has increased. An urge to make most of the current deposits, and to make the low-grade deposits economic to mine has ushered the technology to find new ways to overcome the new challenges. No matter the terminology used, such as coarse beneificiation, waste rejection, particle or bulk sorting, the purpose of sensor-based ore sorting is to remove low-grade rocks before the comminution circuit, increasing the feed head grade and quality while reducing the energy costs related to comminution.Despite nominal advantages, there have always been some concerns that have impeded the intorduction and acceptance of the technology. One of the most important shortcomings of ore sorting is their capability, or capacity, to keep up with the high-tonnage mining. Some other issues that have been mentioned as drawbacks to sorting include installation cost of such devices, feed preparation for effiecient sorting along with accuracy of sorting and probability of false negatives (Manouchehri, 2003)."

Longwall mining alters the fluid-flow-related reservoir properties of the rocks overlying and underlying an extracted panel due to fracturing and relaxation of the strata. These mining-related disturbances create new pressure depletion zones and new flow paths for gas migration and may cause unexpected or uncontrolled migration of gas into the underground workplace. One common technique to control methane emissions in longwall mines is to drill vertical gob gas vent holes into each longwall panel to capture the methane within the overlying fractured strata before it enters the work environment. Thus, it is important to optimize the well parameters, e.g., the borehole diameter, and the length and position of the slotted casing interval relative to the fractured gas-bearing zones. This paper presents the development and results of a comprehensive, "dynamic," three-dimensional reservoir model of a typical multipanel Pittsburgh coalbed longwall mine. The alteration of permeability fields in and above the panels as a result of the mining- induced disturbances has been estimated from mechanical modeling of the overlying rock mass. Model calibration was performed through history matching the gas production from gob gas ventholes in the study area. Results presented in this paper include a simulation of gas flow patterns from the gas-bearing zones in the overlying strata to the mine environment, as well as the influence of completion practices on optimizing gas production from gob gas ventholes.

AFTER more than fifty years of investigation and continuing failure in service, a satisfactory mechanism to explain stress corrosion cracking in homogeneous alloys is still lacking. The relative chemical activity of grain boundaries and adjacent grains, inferred from the boundary structure, has been used to explain intergranular cracking in a brass.' This concept is probably correct as a general hypothesis, but it requires much more extensive development in order to explain satisfactorily the observed phenomena. For example, the specific function of the solute in an alloy must be considered, because intergranular failure does not occur in pure metals,' which are structurally similar to homogeneous alloys. Also, in this connection, an inter crystalline fracture path in binary copper alloys can be changed to a transcrystalline path by relatively small ternary additions.' The fracture path in ß brass is predominantly transcrystalline,' in contrast with an inter crystalline path in a brass. Whether the two different fracture paths are the result of a difference in composition, crystal structure, or the state of long range order is unknown and cannot be determined with ß brass, because only the ordered state can be obtained at room temperature. The study of chemical activity at structural sites in the Cu-Zn system is restricted by the formation of opaque films in an ammonia environment in which stress corrosion cracking is generally observed. Furthermore, both components of the alloy are chemically active and the interpretation of observations is therefore relatively complicated. The Cu-Au system is a better choice for the purpose of studying structural factors. In particular, CuAu is very susceptible to cracking in ferric chloride and opaque films are not formed in this solution; it may be obtained in different states of long and short range order; and, finally, only copper is oxidized in dilute ferric chloride, which considerably simplifies the chemical problem. To provide information necessary for a more general explanation of stress corrosion cracking in homogeneous solid solutions, the following structural factors have been investigated in a Cu-Au alloy having a composition corresponding to Cu,Au: 1) the effect of long and short range order; 2) the structural sites from which copper is removed from the annealed and cold worked polycrystalline alloy; and 3) the effect of annealing time and temperature on structural reactions in the cold worked alloy. Experimental Procedure A Cu-Au alloy of nominal Cu3Au composition was cast from cathode copper and high purity gold and fabricated into sheet and wire. Chemical analysis for copper and gold indicated 48.92 wt pct Cu and 51.01 pct Au. Quantitative spectrographic analysis indicated 0.01 pct Ag, 0.002 pct Pd, 0.001 pct Pb, and 0.002 pct Fe, with traces of magnesium, silicon, and zinc. Presumably most of the remaining 0.055 pct corresponds to the limits of analytical precision. Heat treatments of wire and sheet were conducted in argon or vacuum. The underwater concrete technology has historically evolved largely through a trial-and-error process of constructing marine works. Many outstanding examples exist of high quality concrete placed underwater. However, failures also occurred and led to excessive cost and/or schedule overruns. These failures were largely due to improper concrete mix design or improper placement. The problems may have occurred because proper underwater concrete construction techniques and experience have not been widely disseminated. This section focuses on technical issues of underwater concrete mix design, concrete production and placement, and quality control.

UK Seabed Resources (UKSR) signed a manganese nodule exploration contract with the International Seabed Authority on 8 February 2013 for a 58,000 km2 tract on the eastern edge of the Clarion Clipperton Zone (CCZ). UKSR is a private company based in the United Kingdom and established primarily to develop the commercial potential of the CCZ deposits. This is the first of many anticipated regulatory, market and technical milestones that are requisite for (1) environmentally responsible commercial scale production of nodule derived metals and (2) generation of revenue through their sale in the global commodities market. This presentation will describe the progress made to date in this effort and an industry-based perspective on the tasks and challenges that may lie ahead.

"Falcon Concentrators Inc. has developed a high capacity centrifuge for the recovery of fine, free gold as well as other metals and minerals which were previously thought to be unrecoverable by gravity means. Development started in the early 1980's and the first commercial operation was commissioned in 1986. Gold applications include scavenging conventional gravity and cyanidation circuit tailings, cleaning gravity concentrates, cleaning flotation concentrates to melting grade, scavenging flotation tailings, and placer mining. Recent development work by Falcon has expanded the applications scope of the centrifugal concentrator to include many minerals amenable to gravity concentration including iron, tin, industrial minerals, and hazardous wastes. This paper discusses this technology including its history, present applications, and future potential. OVERVIEW OF CENTRIFIJGAL CONCENTRATIONUsing centrifugal force to enhance the separation of materials by differential specific gravity has been researched for over a century. Many attempts have been made to concentrate minerals in high gravity fields. Patents were granted on this subject as early as 1891 (see Figure 1). Patenting activity continued into the 1920's and has been relatively quiet since. It is significant that no centrifugal system of gravity concentration has been broadly accepted by the mineral processing community until recently. Much of the world's reserve of mineral deposits which are amenable to conventional gravity concentration technology (coarse-grained) have been mined and therefore there is an increasing demand for technology which can economically recover the fine-grained gravity recoverable minerals in the remaining deposits. In addition, centrifugal concentration can play an increasing role in solving environmental problems by offering an inexpensive method of concentrating hazardous materials such as uranium, plutonium, mercury, lead, and other heavy metals. The overall cost of disposing of these substances safely can be drastically reduced if they are recovered into a concentrated form prior to disposal."
