Introduction Precambrian shield terrains the world over are experiencing an unprecedented level of concerted exploration for lode gold deposits. Reasons for this include: • The increase in the price of gold (following 40 years at $1.13/g or $35 per oz) has transformed targets that were once unattractive into viable exploration propositions. • The relatively suppressed market for other metals produced from shields (base metals, nickel, iron, and uranium) has further focused exploration attention on gold. • The preeminence of gold production from rocks of early Precambrian age, as shown in Fig. 1. • The relatively high grade of gold in these mines (averaging about 10 Wt or 0.29 oz per st) permits profitable extraction even under depressed gold prices. A number of these mines have been in continuous operation for more than 50 years. • The recent discovery of the major Hemlo deposit, in well exposed rocks adjacent to the Trans Canada Highway, has had a world-wide impact. This demonstrates that a major new deposit can be found even in an accessible, well exposed area of a shield; gold mineralization is susceptible to rational exploration; and new target types for gold exploration exist. This paper reviews exploration activity for gold in shield terrains worldwide (Fig. 2), excluding Early Proterozoic paleoplacers of the Witwatersrand type. Emphasis is on the Archean, which is traditionally the most productive part of the Precambrian shields. There is also an emphasis on the Canadian shield (Fig. 3) because of its vast areal extent and exceptionally broad range of mineralization styles. Geological Approach A basic problem exists in gold exploration when compared to exploration for base metal massive sulfides that predominated during the 1960s and 1970s. Gold concentrations cannot usually be detected by airborne geophysical instruments. The majority of massive sulfide deposits were detected using airborne electromagnetic detectors and magnetometers. A full 75% of Canadian gold discoveries can be credited to surface prospecting. The percentage is even higher in other countries. This observation allows for great optimism for two reasons: • Large areas of shield terrain are obscured by either surficial deposits (glacial tills, clays, and desert sands) or deep surface weathering. This makes them inaccessible to prospectors. Logic dictates that such obscured areas should have the same potential for gold concentration as has exposed bedrock. • The Hemlo style of mineralization, a roughly tabular ore body where gold is associated with disseminated sulfides, is different from the traditional prospecting target. In 1985, at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined 18,700 acres of the 24,922-acre Eighteen Mile Wilderness Study Area to evaluate mineral resources. This study area is in east-central Idaho in Lemhi County, approximately 20 miles southeast of Leadore. The study area is underlain by Paleozoic marine sedimentary rock and Ordovician granitic rock. The sedimentary rock is primarily limestone and dolomite with a minor amount of siltstone. The Nicholia mining district borders the southern boundary of the study area. However, none of the district's mineral-bearing structures appear to trend into the study area. Just outside the northwestern part of the study area, on Clear Creek, is the E. J. Wilson and Sons? open-pit gypsum mine that operated until about 1977. About 120,000 tons of gypsum were produced from the mine for the cement plant at Inkom, ID, and for use as soil conditioner. Two theories for the origin of gypsum deposits are a hydrothermal source and a stratabound occurrence. Hydrothermal deposition is favored for this deposit. Occurrences of gypsum may exist in the study area. However, known reserves are adequate to meet needs for at least 800 years. There are no known mines, claims, or leases in the study area. INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of part of the Eighteen Mile WSA (Wilderness Study Area) 1/ at the request of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The USBM examines and evaluates individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. The immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions. The long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

The potential usefulnuss of reclaimed surface-mined land has received much attention in recent times. This attention is partially due to the establishment of federal environmental reclamation standards but concern for achieving better land uses has also been shown by interested members of the mining industry. In an effort to develop a procedure for evaluating postmining land use potentials, specific mines in various regions of the U. S. were studied to determine the extent of current mined-land planning and to discover characteristics that are regional in nature. As part of this investigation, a 430-acre surface mine in Clear-field County, Pennsylvania has been studied. Established site planning principles have been applied to the case study site including formation of a data base, development of alternate land use plans, and evaluation of the economic, environmental, and social impacts of the land use alternatives. Key factors affecting site realization have been identified along with positive suggestions for applying land use planning processes to mined-land planning.

Many technology problems must be solved if we are to continue to produce phosphate at our current rate of consumption. The U.S. produces at least 25% of the world's phosphate, 40 million tons of phosphate rock per annum with most of the production coming from Florida. Of particular concern are improved separation efficiency and the ability to treat new dolomitic resources. Phosphate flotation technology needs include: 1. Simplification of the standard flowsheet 2. Improved recovery of coarse phosphate 3. Selective flotation for phosphate recovery from dolomitic resources Preliminary results, including tests on plant feed from Florida show that these objectives may be achieved with a new collector chemistry depending on the specific circumstances. The effectiveness of the new collector chemistry has been demonstrated by the preliminary results from single stage flotation experiments both at the University of Utah laboratories and at Florida Institute of Phosphate Research (FIPR) laboratories. In the best case, from these experiments with low grade (5% P2O5) coarse feed (16x35 mesh), a single stage phosphate recovery of 95 % was achieved with a concentrate grade of 31 % P2O5. Such a separation efficiency could not be achieved using the traditional fatty acid/fuel oil collector. Based on these results it seems that a one step process may be possible for phosphate flotation and a research program is justified for the development of this new flotation strategy.

The Washington, DC Water and Sewer Authority (WASA) has implemented facility planning for the Anacostia River Projects portion of a program to bring its Combined Sewer System (CSO) into compliance with federal water quality regulations by 2025. The program includes approximately 19 kilometers (12 miles) of deep CSO storage/conveyance and flood relief soft ground tunnels, construction, vortex drop, overflow, maintenance and air release shafts, as well as near surface diversion structures and conveyances. The Project encompasses major technical and non-technical challenges including completion under a federal consent decree schedule, construction within the confines of heavily developed urban areas, difficult ground conditions, major infrastructure crossings, and close coordination with several major public agencies. This paper discusses the planning stage considerations related to the geotechnical investigation program, discusses obstructions that influenced alignment selection, and provides two examples of preliminary estimates of settlement induced ground movement due to the tunnel and shaft construction.

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P2O5 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

The modelling of lithological domains is a critical step in mineral resource and reserve evaluation. Deterministic models rely on an interpretation of the available drill hole data and expert knowledge, but do not account for the uncertainty in the spatial extent of the lithological domains. Instead, probabilistic models based on conditional simulation can be used to map the probabilities of occurrence of the domains within the deposit, which reflect the uncertainty in their presence or absence at unsampled locations. The mineral grade model is then obtained by weighting the predicted grades associated with each lithological domain by the probability of occurrence of this domain. Such an approach accounts for the continuity of the grades proper to each lithological domain and for the uncertainty in the spatial extent of these domains within the deposit. G-ResourcesÆ Martabe Mine in North Sumatra, Indonesia, is a US$700 M world-class and world-scale operation in a country which, with a few notable smaller scale exceptions, has had no significant hard rock mining development in more than ten years.The mine was commissioned in the middle part of 2012 and poured first gold on 24 July. At full production Martabe will produce 250 000 oz/a of gold and 2 - 3 Moz/a of silver at cash costs in the lowest quartile. The mine location is on the west coast of North Sumatra, which experiences annual rainfall of 4 m with no notable dry season, adjacent to seismically active fault zones, and relatively close to a rural community of 31 000 people with no significant industrial experience.The management team has successfully forged strong links with the various government departments and levels in Jakarta, North Sumatra Province and the local Regencies; developed long-term relationships with the various community groups within the local district of Batangtoru to build a sustainable social licence; has dealt with the physical and environmental challenges presented by the project location, and has successfully raised more than US$900 M over a period of three years for the original acquisition then the development of the project.Whilst in its infancy of operation, the mine is set up to deliver a long-term sustainable future for the company, the shareholders, and the people of Batangtoru and all stakeholders generally. The quality of the project execution and commitment by the company will ensure that maximum value can be delivered from Martabe, not just for the current mine life but from the significant exploration potential that exists on the large tenement area that the company has access to for 30 plus years.This paper will deal with the physical challenges associated with the design, the Indonesian government regulatory requirements for mine development, the social aspects of building a world-class project in a developing area, the in-country commitment necessary for any project development anywhere in the world and the successful funding arrangements for the mine development.CITATION:Albert, P G, Siahaan, L H D and Duffy, T J V, 2012. Quarry Blasting is usually boring, and that is how we like it. By this, boring means routine, straightforward, meat and potatoes blasting. Quarries typically will not utilize cast blasting, coyote tunnels, or any of the other more spectacular blasting techniques – just plain, old day-in and day-out quarry production and possibly overburden blasting. Differences in material characteristics, mining method, equipment availability, and target markets all play a part in determining the blasting procedures employed at any given location. However, variables exist everywhere and with foresight and planning, effects of tangible variables can be minimized. Variables caused by geology, weather, neighbors, or limitations caused by major plant or mobile equipment are, generally speaking, intangible; and leave the operator with finite options to improve or modify blasting procedures.

A study was conducted to assess environmental effects of waste rock piles on water in the Russell Gulch area. Each pile was rated on physical characteristics of proximity to an ephemeral gulch, extensiveness of erosion features, size, presence of vegetation, and presence of a kill zone. Chemical assessments focused on three leachate tests performed on waste rock samples. Ratings were based on pH, conductivity, acidity, and analysis for 31 metals using inductively coupled plasma emission spectroscopy. The chemical and physical assessment of each site is used to make a rating of each pile on its overall potential to deliver contaminants.

The following tables summarize data on crude nonfuel mineral production for the United States, its island possessions, and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. Although crude mineral production may be measured at any of several stages of extraction and processing, the stage of measurement used in these tables is what is termed "mine output." It usually refers to minerals or ores in the form in which they are first extracted from the ground, but customarily includes the output from auxiliary processing at or near the mines. Because of inadequacies in the statistics available, some series deviate from the foregoing definition. For copper, gold, lead, silver, tin, and zinc, the quantities are recorded on a mine basis (as the recoverable content of ore sold or treated). However, the values assigned to these quantities are based on the average selling price of refined metal, not the mine value. Mercury is measured as recovered metal and valued at the average New York price for the metal. The values shown are in current dollars, with no adjustments made to compensate for changes in the purchasing power of the dollar.

The design of foundations for the tall buildings of lower Manhattan rely on the use of high capacity, rock anchors to resist overturning forces generated by lateral loads from wind, earth, water and, to a lesser degree, seismic forces. Once completed, the proposed towers at the World Trade Center (WTC) site will be among the tallest buildings in New York City. The towers are exposed to coastal winds and from several levels of below grade structure soil and water loads. The design loading required under the current New York City Building Code (NYCBC) is similar to the requirements of the building code used to design the original WTC Twin Towers. We will compare how rock anchors were deployed in the Twin Towers and how they are used in the new buildings. Changes to the building code are less significant that the changes to the design of the structure; that is how the outer skin or perimeter structure interacts with the building core. The result is a significant increase in the number of rock anchors required for the new buildings when compared to those installed in the original WTC Twin Towers.

Geopolymerization is a process by which Al-Si minerals undergo dissolution and polymerization in an alkaline solution to form a monolithic material with a high mechanical strength (Davidovits, 1991; 1994). In this study, Na-feldspar (albite) and K-feldspar (microcline) have been selected to investigate their abilities to undergo geopolymerization. The interaction between alkali metals present in the alkali-feldspars and alkali metal cations contained in alkaline solution during geopolymerization has also been studied. It has been found that both albite and microcline can be applied in geopolymerization to produce geopolymers with a high compressive strength. Although the dissolution of M-feldspar (where M = Na and/or K) in concentrated MOH solution is inhibited when the alkali metal cations of the alkaline solution differ from the alkali metals structured in M-feldspar, the resulting geopolymers are found to demonstrate a higher compressive strength. Moreover, a proper molar ratio of Si/Al in the geopolymeric gel phase and a higher average hardness of the undissolved particles remaining in the geopolymers are found to greatly increase the ultimate compressive strength of the geopolymers.

The disposal of the brines produced with crude petroleum and natural gas has long been a constant source of trouble to oil and gas operators as well as to farmers and stock-raisers in the vicinity of producing fields. The amount of oilfield brines Produced from wells on new properties may be almost negligible, but some older wells may produce several hundred barrels a day. A survey of almost 200 wells on 31 properties in the eastern part of Osage County, Okla., showed that during the month of November, 1928, the average production of water was 3.26 barrels per barrel of oil produced. The age of the wells included in this survey ranged from two to 28 years; the maximum amount of brine produced was 26 barrels of water to one barrel of oil and the lowest was one barrel of water to 27 barrels of oil. These figures apply to a small area. In other fields the production of water also varies widely; for example, in the Cushing4, Okla., field several yells were reported as having produced 100 barrels of water to every barrel of oil produced. Often the production of oil-field brines is decreased materially and the production of petroleum increased by the use of bottom hole Plugs and by a general repair and cementing of wells. The records5 of 22 wells cemented in the Gushing field showed that prior to the repair work, the average total dally production was 242.5 barrels of oil and 3,977.5 barrels of water. This Bureau of Mines report presents the results of a laboratory investigation of coal cutting mechanics and noise. These experiments were performed using linear cutting apparatus that operates over a broad cutting speed range. The influence of several coal cutting parameters on the noise, force, productivity, and specific energy associated with linear cuts was ascertained. Some basic theoretical aspects of coal cutting mechanics and noise generation are discussed, and the results of the laboratory experiments are used to formulate analytical models of the coal cutting forces and noise. The analytical model for coal cutting noise is then generalized to account for the more important effects of rotary cutting. Based on the generalized model, an estimate of the sound pressure level at an operator&apos;s position is made for a typical continuous mining machine. It is concluded that by employing linear rather than rotary cuts, using deeper depths of cut, slower cutting speeds, and more efficient cutting tools, it is possible to reduce the level of coal cutting noise, as well as provide benefits to other important areas of health and safety in underground mining.

Agnico Eagle (Cadillac Quebec, Canada) selected the new Eimco PEC E – CAT™ clarifier thickeners for their counter-current decantation circuit, which handles approximately 200tph leached gold/silver ore. The E-CAT is based on rakeless ultra-high rate thickening technology that originated in South Africa. Four 9m diameter and two 10m EIMCO E – CAT ultra high rate, rakeless thickeners were installed in the fall of 2000. Thickening and clarification performance has been excellent. Problems with level control have been resolved and the plant personnel continue to improve the operating control techniques. The CCD circuit is critical to the success of the operation and good recovery. Data will be presented showing the wash ratios and recovery achieved. A brief history of the operation and the decision to utilize the CCD system will be presented.

The Bureau of Mines, between 1956 and 1963, examined 18 major pegmatite districts in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming to evaluate their content of beryllium, a material in short domestic supply that has become increasingly important to modern industry. This examination report includes the salient statistics on the production of pegmatite minerals other than quartz and feldspar; and brief descriptions of 170 specific pegmatite deposits.

The productivity and safety of Indian longwall operations are insignificant because of complex geomechanical conditions. Therefore, the continuous monitoring and forecasting of abnormalities is imperative. Authors developed an innovative real time system and implemented in one of the Indian longwall mines. The real time system was successfully acquired data from underground chock shields and classified the behaviour in real time as per the standard norms. Furthermore, it forecasted the abnormal behaviour of chock shields promptly. The management was implemented appropriate precautionary measures based on real time forecast. Subsequently, the longwall operations were successfully completed with enhanced productivity and safety. This paper discuss the impact of the innovative system on productivity of experimental longwall mine.
