Cable reel systems for shuttle cars were investigated to determine whether an improved system could be identified. Interviews and mine visits were conducted to better define limitations and problems with present systems. Although simple and relatively inexpensive, present cable reel systems are not fully satisfactory. Several concepts for a different technical configuration were formulated and evaluated. An all ectric system using electronic control and external sensors was recommended for further development.

The Missouri-Kansas-Oklahoma lead and zinc district, better known as the Joplin district, includes the mines in southwest Missouri and in those parts of Kansas and Oklahoma that are directly adjacent. (See PI. I.) This report of investigations carried on by the Bureau of Mines gives the methods used in mining and milling and indicates in some detail the conditions that affect the efficiency of those methods; it does not attempt to discuss the geology of the district, except incidentally, as this has been described in numerous reports by several geologists. Some of the more important recent publications are those of the United States Geological Survey by Smith and Siebenthal, a Bain, b and also those of the Missouri State geological survey by Buckley and Buehler." Other reports are those by Schmidt and Leonard," and Winslow,e of the Missouri geological survey, by Haworth and Crane,! of the Kansas geological survey, and by Jenney.g Although the lead and zinc ores are closely associated, the proportion of zinc ore mined at present is far greater than in former years. For this reason and because the losses in milling zinc ores are proportionately greater than in milling those of lead, the zinc ores are here given most consideration. Only the mines and mills actually examined and tested are discussed in detail, statements of results being restricted to the mines in general, with no special reference to anyone mine. Several mill tests were made to determine in a general way the efficiency of the milling practice in this district and to discover at what stage of the process the losses were greatest. Making these mill tests proved difficult,for, because of the arrangement of the mills and the necessity of estimating the tonnage treated, systematic mill testing and sampling can be done at only a few plants. Many tables giving results of mill tests and screen tests have been omitted because they would serve only to emphasize the important points shown by other data given. The writer has tried to bring out the possibilities of making certain improvements that would effect a greater saving, and has endeavored to avoid the use of technical terms and phrases in order that all statements may be clear and easily understood.

A series of 15, stations beginning with Potsdam and Budapest and ending with Budapest and Potsdam were occupied inn the period August, 1908, to January, 1909. The intermediate stations were all at points which had been connected by Baron Eötvös with torsion-balance traverses. The observations were made with an invariable pendulum of the standard four-pendulum type of instrument of the Geodetic Institute, made by Stückrath at Berlin-Friedenau. The observations at each of the field stations lasted-one to three days with one exception; two or three time determinations were made; four to eight series of pendulum observations were made; the error of determination of the elevation of the instrument above mean sea level ranged from 0.30 meter to 1.10 meters, with the exception of the Arad and Baja stations, where the elevation was known more accurately and averaged about ± 0.8 m, which would cause an error of ± 0.25 x 10-3 dynes. No topographic correction was applied. The values for ?g were taken from Eötvös: Report on Geodetic Observations in Hungary, especially Observations with the Torsion Balance, Budapest, 1910. The differences in ?g as determined, by the torsion balance and by the unvariable pendulum were: Kuvin-Hidegkut 1.2 km. 0.001, Livada-Kuvin 9 km. 0.001, Pankota-Livada 13 km. 0.004, Kuvin-Arad 20 km. 0.000, Pankota-Arad via Kuvin 42 42 km.0.005, Pankota- Arad via Kurtics 50 km.0.000 dynes. Oltay concludes that if the stations are close enough together and if the terrane is rather flat, the measurement of ?g with the Eötvös torsion balance is as accurate as with the invariable pendulum. -- Donald C. THE object of this investigation was to make a comprehensive study of the degassing of molybdenum in order to determine how rigorous a treatment was necessary to completely remove sorbed gases from molybdenum electrodes in vacuum tubes. Some work has also been done with tungsten, nickel, iron and carbon. As a logical development of this work it has been shown that the gas is present throughout the body of the metal and a study has been made of the solubility of nitrogen in molybdenum and tungsten and the rate of diffusion of nitrogen through molybdenum has been calculated. Tests were made on molybdenum from all the commercial sources and no difference was discovered in the nature of the gases present, the amounts or the ease of removal. The reason for this was apparent when a study was made of the manner in which gases are absorbed by gas-free molybdenum. It is necessary to heat molybdenum to 1760°C.oin a vacuum of the order of 0.001 micron for a time which varies lineally with the thickness, in order to obtain a condition in which no further gas is evolved by the sample. A sample so degassed can be handled and subsequently assembled in a tube and then degassed readily. The gases obtained from molybdenum are carbon monoxide and nitrogen, the nitrogen being the more difficult to remove. APPARATUS AND TECHNIQUE The apparatus is shown in Figs. I and 2. It consisted of two units, a degassing system and an analytical system. Each had a bake-out oven, as shown surrounding the systems in the sketches. The system will be traced, starting from the sample in the degassing system. A water-cooled quartz chamber surrounded the sample. The high-frequency coil, which heated the sample, extended only around this chamber and was cooled by an air blast. High-frequency power of 0800-meter wave length was obtained from a self-rectifying oscillator circuit with a maximum power input of 20 kw. A graded seal connected the quartz to the rest of the apparatus, which was of hard' glass. The temperature of the molybdenum sample was observed by an optical pyrometer through an optical window about 40 cm. distant from the sample. Since the object viewed under these conditions was not 'a black body, true temperature was not observed, but the so-called "brightness temperature." The correction of this to true temperature is discussed in a later section. The apparatus was taken apart just above the graded seal; the quartz chamber was slipped off, washed with nitric acid, water and alcohol, and dried by an air stream. The old sample was removed by

"(1) The radiological appearances of pneumokoniosis on the Kolar Gold Field is described in detail. The characteristic abnormality is the. presence of a diffuse, fine annular and punctate mottling. (2) The frequency of symptoms could not be determined with any degree of accuracy, but it is believed that symptoms are absent and there is no incapacity until profuse radiological mottling is present, i.e., after long exposure to dust. (3) There is an increased predisposition to tuberculosis, which, if it occurs, affects the prognosismost unfavourably.(4) Pathological examination shows that the radiological mottling is due to the presence inthe lung of numerous small dust-cdll aggregates (up to T5 mm. in dia.) deposited around the smaller bronchioles and blood-vessels.(5) The dust-cell aggregates are relatively acellular but when tuberculosis is superadded thereis an excessive cellular and fibrotic reaction.(6) The difficulties of defining the radiological and pathological appearances of early pneumokoniosisare discussed.(7) The incidence of pneumokoniosis in 7,653 workmen with 5 or more years’ undergroundservice was 43-75%, but it is suggested that in future the incidence will be appreciably lower.(8) The methods of- dust production and the chemistry of mine dust are described. It isshown that the free silica-content of air-borne mine -dust is relatively low.(9) The aetiology'of the pneumokoniotic lesion is discussed."

"The end of an era in zinc metallurgy took place on July 31, 1976 when the horizontal retort furnaces of the National Zinc Company in Bartlesville, Oklahoma were permanently shut down (1) . For more than a century, horizontal retorting had been the most common method of producing zinc in the United States; it was a thriving industry in many parts of that country, especially in the natural gas belts of Oklahoma and Texas. With the Bartlesville closure, yet another metallurgical process has become an object of historical interest for North American metallurgists. Although shrouded in controversy, the origins of zinc metallurgy seem to date back at least 2000 years. Pyrometallurgical methods with carbon reductants are capable of producing zinc from oxidic zinc ores, but only above the boiling point of the metal. Although slow cooling results in re-oxidation of the zinc vapour by air or carbon monoxide, quenching yields liquid zinc; some form of rapid cooling, either accidental or intentional, was likely used by ancient metallurgists to liquify the metal. Zinc metal found in Athenian objects of the Roman era was likely of accidental origin. The Romans employed brass extensively for coins and ornaments(2) , and this was intentionally produced by the calamine process whereby oxidic zinc ores were added to molten copper under strongly reducing conditions. Zinc appears to have been known in China and India as early as 1000-1300 A.D., and was probably smelted commercially in those countries from the 14th century. Although the early metallurgical procedures were probably inefficient, they were able to produce zinc metal in significant amounts. The large heaps of zinc residues with clay retorts bear testimony to an early smelting industry of impressive magnitude. It is estimated that the heaps at Zawar, India alone represent the extraction of 100 000 tons of metallic zinc(2) In the 1730s the smelting of oxidic zinc ores was developed in England using a vertical retort method. In 1788 a British patent was granted for making zinc from zinc blends (ZnS) by roasting the ore in a coalfired reverberatory furnace, mixing the calcine with charcoal and smelting the mixture with suitable zinc condensation. The English process was very energy intensive, however, and early in the 19th century the Belgians developed a horizontal retort process for the reductiondistillation of zinc that was more fuel efficient. This technique was gradually developed into what came to be known as the Belgian process, the forerunner of the ""modern"" horizontal retort furnace."

The names of the sections indicate broadly the fields covered by each, and in the following, pages the objectives and type of work of each section will be summarized briefly and their active problems listed. The work clone during the fiscal year 1937 will also be summarized.

In an earlier series of 15 Reports of Investigations on Smelting in the Lead Blast Furnace, experimental data were given on the operations of a custom smelter, a smelter treating rich lead products, and a smelter treating highly zinciferous charges. Five "reports" were written on each of the three types of operation, which were later compared in a summary written for the Institute. Developments in each of these types of operation in lead smelting since the last of the above reports was written have continued and have followed modifications necessitated by changes in the nature of the products received for smelting. The sintering-blast furnace-smelting plants have improved their sintering operation .and have made "2-pass" sintering a more standard operation; the richer lead feeds are diluted when marginal precious metal ores are not available to prevent fusion of the sinter cakes and to permit air to contact the sulfides. Means have been devised to make it easier to remove metallic lead from the wind boxes, but no attempts have been observed to use the D & L somewhat as an ore hearth to make more metallic lead. Except in those cases where zinc-rich lead blast-furnace slags were to be retreated in a "slag-fuming furnace," the sintering and the blast-furnace operations were so carried out that a relatively "clean," lead-poor, final slag was discarded.

This report examines the feasibility of Employee Assistance Plans for the coal industry. Three issues are examined in detail. First, the prevalence of off-the-job factors such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and marital problems are examined in a sample of miners from the eastern, midwestern, and western underground coal fields. Then data were presented that examined the link between these off-the-job factors and behaviors critical to the mines such as absenteeism and turnover. Lastly, we examined the effectiveness of the major Employee Assistance Program in underground coal mining--the HELP Program. The report contains recommendations on whether coal mining companies should implement these programs and how these programs should be designed.

He told of the work that had been done on the continent and of the new methods introduced by the mining engineers for the betterment of the nation. He then introduced Capt. Robert W. Hunt, twice past President of the Institute, and present Acting President for the San Francisco meeting and the subsequent visit to Japan, who responded cordially to Mr. Ralston's welcoming address. By unanimous vote, the Secretary was instructed to send a telegram to President Charles Kirchhoff expressing regret for his absence, and hoping for a rapid improvement in the health of his mother. The ferroalloys industry has generated historically substantial solid waste. The accumulated waste causes serious problems to the environment. However, it is possible to transform the solid waste into an environment-friendly resource to serve the human being. Consequently, the construction of plants that are ?environment-friendly? and that accommodate ?recycling? has become a target of most ferroalloy producers in the world to ensure sustainable development. This paper introduces the practice of Shanxi Jiaocheng Yiwang Ferroalloys Works, the biggest manganese metal producer in China, in the development of an ?environment-friendly and recycling? process. The process includes power generation using coal gangue, waste from local coal mines; hollow bricks manufacture using slag and fly ash from the power station; cement production using slag from ferroalloy smelting; recovery of ferrous and non-ferrous elements in the dust from the furnace gas cleaning system; application of silica dust in construction and so on. The final objective of the plant is to realize zero discharge of solid waste. The profit of the ?environment-friendly and recycling? process compensates in part for the operational expense of the environment facilities.

The McLaughlin Mine is a world class epithermal gold deposit located in the coastal thrust fault of Northern California, U.S.A. Homestake adopted a proactive strategy in the permitting of the Mine. Extensive environmental base line studies were undertaken. Engineering and process alternatives were evaluated for environmental impact along with other factors. A unique pressure oxidation process was selected. Screening studies were conducted as a basis for the selection of waste rock and tailings disposal sites. Project engineering and permitting were fast tracked. Construction required eighteen months and the first gold bar was poured in Parch of 1985, six years after the initial discovery. Project facilities are designed and operated so as to minimize environmental impacts. A comprehensive monitering program demonstrates permit compliance. Reclamation of the site is ongoing throughout the Mine?s twenty year life. Non-mined lands are managed to maximize wildlife habitat value.

This paper discusses the operating model within Endeavour Mining Corporation regarding the options of owner mining against contract mining. It’s based on the concept of ‘are we carrying out the most efficient mining’ regarding cost and performance. This question can only be answered through an extensive contract mining tender process and conducting a comprehensive comparison to evaluate the transition viability. Karma mine, located in Burkina Faso, is the subject of this paper. The Tender model included sales of equipment, parts and tooling associated with the traditional Load and Haul Schedule of Rates (SOR). The methodology focused on the structure of the tender process, which consists in the development of a SOR based on haulage profiles and mining schedule. This is a new Endeavour framework that allowed the bidders to compete on an even level. This was performed using a systemic analysis which encompassed all the elements involved in a transition such as the Human Resources (HR), taxes and customs implications, directs and non-direct costs (Finance and interest on assets, depreciation, insurance), contractor risk profiling. It was assessed against the normalised internal pricing tender-based. This paper gives an insight into how a West African mining operation addressed the sensitivities of the HR functions against the commercial aspects. This was one of the most successful transitions in West Africa and was carried out during the COVID crisis. The outcome of this project has created value by detailing a lesson learned model for both commercial and HR aspects. This discusses the commercial comparisons along with the internal model with the underlying HR functions as a risk factor that could have jeopardised the continuation of the operation. This resulted in a smooth transition with the additional cash flow generated by the sale of the parts and equipment turned Karma into a viable operation.

The national mine-safety demonstration at Pittsburgh, Pa., was projected and undertaken in the hope that it would aid the increase of safety in the mining industry. That the national mine-safety demonstration was warranted and has served a useful purpose was evidenced by the attendance, not only at the public demonstration in Forbes Field, but also at the more special exhibit of the work of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds and at the experimsntal. mine. Nearly 2,000 persons witnessed the demonstrations and exhibits of the Bureau of Mines at the arsenal grounds on the morning of October 30, 1911. The spectators were all mine operators, miners, or persons interested in mining, and represented operations in all parts of the United States. Nearly 1,200 of these persons visited the bureau's experimental mine at Bruceton to witness ~th~explosion of coal dust. Had the weather, which was exceptionally inclement, been more favorable, there would doubtless have been a much larger attendance. At the public demonstration in Forbes Field, which· was witnessed by President Taft, from 12,000 to 15,000 persons, chiefly mining men, were present and attested their interest and enthusiasm in the minesafety exhibits by remaining throughout the proceedings, regardless of the rain which fell all the morning .. Sincethis demonstration, the organization of first-aid corps and of rescue corps has been undertaken at mines where there had previously been no such organizations. The bureau has received letters of commendation attesting the value of the demonstration in drawing· attention to the dangers and to possible means of greater safety in mining. Many of these letters have urged that the results of the demonstration be published for the guidance and instruction of those who were present. In response to these reauests the following account of the mine- BlIIeLY demonstration lias been prepared. IIi its preparation various division and section chiefs of the Bureau of Mines have cooperated. The authors acknowledge the assistance they have received from those section chiefs and other members of the bureau who contributed detailed descriptions of apparatus exhibited at the demonstration or of investigations represented.

COAL'S importance in the metallurgy of zinc may be gauged by the fact that approximately a million and a half tons is so employed annually in the United States. This brief paper will show in what way the various steps in the treatment of zinc ores utilize this fuel, either in its primary form or as coke or gas, and to what extent. The first step in zinc metallurgy that requires the use of fuel is roasting the sulphide ore, which is the type of ore in which zinc commonly occurs. Since the roasting is nearly or completely autogenous, however, this use of fuel is too minor to warrant further attention. Concentration of zinc ores is usually carried out by conventional milling methods, but a pyrometallurgical method, the Waelz process, is used to concentrate certain low-grade ores, and to recover the zinc content of certain residues in concentrate form. This report is the 20th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations; it is the second4/ to be issued on a calendar-year basis. Previous reports related largely to publications by Bureau authors during the reporting period. This one discusses the publications issued during 1955 and in addition describes briefly the work in progress during the year. Further details on the published work may be found by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes. The Bureau continues to direct its research and technologic work on coal toward safer and more efficient mining, improved preparation, and more effective utilization, with the ultimate twin goals of promoting conservation and insuring that coal will make its maximum contribution to the Nation's industrial capacity. Significant advances toward these goals were made in 1955.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B.Sc. (Eng.) (Metallurgy and Materials) degree Corrosion in exhaust systems can occur on both the interior and exterior surfaces. Chloride-containing de-icing salts on the roads in colder countries greatly increases the rate of corrosion on the exterior surfaces. This paper investigates the relative exterior corrosion resistance of three alloys?two ferritic stainless steels( AISI Types 409 and 441) and an aluminized mild steel. The exhaust system is split into two categories?the hot end and the cold end. A test for each of these ends was designed?the standard ASTM G85test was modified to create a simulated driving cycle. The cold end test samples were exposed to ten driving cycles, and the hot end test samples were exposed to five driving cycles. A driving cycle constitutes the car being started from cold, driven until the operating temperatures are reached, and switched off and allowed to cool. Pitting corrosion is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring at the cold end of the exhaust system. The aluminized mild steel was the most resistant alloy in this test, and Type 409 the least. However, once the protective aluminium layer degrades, corrosion will occur rapidly. At the hot end of the exhaust system, spalling of the surface oxide layer is the primary corrosion mechanism occurring. Type 441 was the most resistant in this test, and the aluminized mild steel the least resistant. Potentiodynamic tests were performed on the alloys?the results agreed with the results obtained in the exposure tests.

Next year marks the tenth anniversary of the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA). As the U.S. coal industry scrambles to cope with serious economic difficulties, it is appropriate to examine some other difficulties that have their origin in certain provisions of that ten year old law, and that bear directly on the economic viability of surface coal mining in the west. This paper focuses briefly on three technical issues in the reclamation of surface coal mines in arid regions, and suggests that innovation can resolve these issues. The coal industry operates within a narrow legal context, defined in 1977. In enacting SMCRA, Congress listed among the purposes of the Act ?... to...strike a balance between protection of the environment, agricultural productivity and the Nation's need for coal as an essential source of energy." I maintain that such a balance has never been struck, particularly with regard to the reclamation of mines in the west. One reason is that when SMCRA was enacted its supporters were aware of uncertainties about the potential for successful reclamation of western surface mines. Over the intervening years, as a recent Congressional study report (OTA, 1986) points out, "...the risks these uncertainties may pose to the long term success of western reclamation have been reduced significantly." Unfortunately, SMCRA's enforcement agency, the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) has not yet recognized this fact, and the western coal industry is paying the price.
