"INTRODUCTION In a previous report3 prepared for the American Gas Association, the influence of washing coal on coke properties and on gas and by-product yields was discussed on the basis of answers to questionnaires sent to coke-oven superintendents and a review of the literature on the subject. This review indicated that the elimination of free impurities by cleaning coal improved coke quality by (a) reducing ash and sulphur, (b) decreasing clinker trouble in burning the coke, (c) diminishing cross fractures in the coke, resulting in greater resistance to breakage on handling, and less small coke and breeze, and (d) greater uniformity in chemical composition and physical properties of coke. Washing also reduced the sulphur in coke and gas and increased the yield of gas and by-products per ton of dry coal charged.This paper is supplementary to the previous report and presents some experimental data obtained with Pittsburgh bed coal from Pennsylvania and Mary Lee bed coal from Alabama.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSGrateful acknowledgment is made to F. "The use of stirred mill to complement tumbling mills in grinding fine grained minerals is increasingly becoming an attractive processing option. Parameters such as agitation speed, grinding media type and size, feed pulp density, and grinding time were studied in order to elucidate their impact on stirred milling. Test results showed that the parameters have a profound effect on stirred mill efficiency and operating cost. A comparative test with a tumbling ball mill was also made and the specific energies of both mills in fine grinding were analyzed. A difference of over 40% in energy savings particularly when the product size is smaller than 20 µm was obtained with the stirred mill.INTRODUCTIONIn industrial processes where very fine and ultrafine particles are required such as in chemical, ink, food, paint and lacquer, pulp and paper, plastics, pharmaceutical, metallurgical and ceramic industries, the use of stirred mills for grinding is well established. Mineral processing plants are gradually shifting focus to the use of stirred mills for fine grinding and /or regrinding purposes as the target liberation size gets very small. A number of plants processing finely/sparsely disseminated ores are known to have adopted stirred milling technology for their fine grinding needs (Enderle et al., 1997; Harbort et al., 1999; Gao et al., 2000; Davey, 2003 & 2006; Pease et al., 2006).There are different kinds/designs of stirred mills available on the market but, all can be divided into two sub groups namely fluidized and non-fluidized types. The non-fluidized stirred mills consist of Tower mill, Vertimill, Sala agitated mill (SAM), and ANI-Metprotech (SVM). These mills are characterized by their low-speed and the use of fairly coarse grinding media size, 3 – 20 mm. Hence, they are mostly suitable for relatively coarse grinding application. The fluidized type includes the Isamill, Netzsch mill and Stirred mill detritor (SMD). These mills have a characteristic high agitator speed, use fine grinding media size of 0.5 – 5 mm, and are employed in very fine grinding operations. The superior fine grinding capability of stirred mills is attributable to two main process parameters, which are the use of fine grinding media and a high mill speed."

The deposit has been exploited for Mn oxide and carbonate since 1916. Known reserves of MnO, however, are almost depleted and the survival of the mine will depend on the exploitation of the carbonate. Kriging, inverse distance weighting (IDW) and cross-sectional methods have been applied to the evaluation of the carbonate resources and reconciliation of the estimates obtained shows that kriging and IDW give almost identical block values. A comparison using conditional probability indicates that there is virtually no difference between the global reserve estimates derived from the cross-sectional and kriging methods. The physical causes of these similarities are highlighted and the problems of dealing with multimodal distributions are discussed together with the difficulties of semi-variogram modelling

Frothers are surfactants used in floatation to aid generation of small bubbles. Studying events at the moment of bubble creation is a challenge because of the short time frame. This presentation introduces a novel acoustic approach. The technique has the resolution capable of detecting events that occur within 1-2 ms. The transition from coalescence to non-coalescence is tracked as a function of surfactant concentration and gas rate through the capillary. Results are given for some common flotation frothers and n-alcohols (C4-C8). A stress model is used to give a qualitative explanation to the observed action of frothers on coalescence prevention. Results for salt (sodium chloride) are included for comparison).

Roof and rib falls are the basic ground control hazards associated with underground roadways during development, stand up and, if applicable, retreat. Falls of ground can happen following the deterioration of supports or rock conditions over time, and particularly as a consequence of continuing rock deformation and/ or failure to install adequate support. Once developed, the risk of a failure is increased due to the effects of time as well as to front abutment stresses through retreat mining. The measurement of strata displacement using monitoring equipment is a form of ground control risk assessment. These monitoring systems are active, or ?live?, in a sense that risk is assessed real-time. However, there are circumstances in which falls of ground can occur without the prior recording of excessive movement. In addition, monitoring equipment is typically placed at set intervals, and strata conditions could vary between these points. Consequently, a visual assessment of other factors contributing to the risk of a fall should be made in order to complete a ground control risk assessment. Such surveys are usually one-off, thus capturing roadway conditions at one particular point in time. Ongoing deterioration is not documented through such one-time surveys, and there is a requirement for real-time or live assessment where a system is in place so that observation data can be updated on an ongoing basis, and a useful summary of prevailing roadway states produced on demand. To address the shortfalls of one-time assessments, a ?live? computerbased quantitative ground control risk assessment process has been developed. It combines visual observations processed in a quantitative manner with existing monitoring data into an interpretable output which indicates zones of roadway where there is an increased risk of a fall of ground from the roof or sides, so that remedial action can be carried out to mitigate that risk. Through improved procedures, it is now possible to generate a ground control risk assessment for each roadway, and one which can be updated frequently. This paper aims to outline and describe the assessment process.

The energy consumption and recovery of chromium are important economic factors in ferrochrome production. Outokumpu has a lot of experience of the reduction behavior of the sintered pellets in industrial-scale furnaces and also on the grounds of numerous laboratory and pilot-scale investigations. Sintered pellets have shown a superiority over lumpy ore and briquettes made of the same chromite grade. The good performance of the pellets has also resulted in investigations on the reasons for such a performance. In this study, the factors affecting pellet behavior in smelting furnace were investigated. This study is divided into two sections, i.e. the investigations were on the factors affecting solid state reduction and on the factors affecting reduction under melting. These tests were performed by means of thermo gravimetry and by smelting tests. The correlation between the pellet characteristics and reduction behavior was shown and its influence on industrial-scale furnaces was discussed. Factors worth of consideration are for instance, the extent of oxidation during sintering, slag formation and chemistry in respect of molten state reduction, and the grain size of the chromite mineral in the raw material in respect of kinetic reasons (retention time in smelting).

The comparison between J Visman and C O Ingamells’ works with P M Gy’s works has been the object of intense debates in the past. Such negative debates inevitably resulted in a loss of many good opportunities. The author’s long experience in applying works of these three authors led to the pragmatic conclusion that it is relatively easy to integrate everything Visman and Ingamells created into the Theory of Sampling; therefore, it is suggested that the compatibility has been vastly overlooked, and a correction for such anomaly is recommended. It is important to emphasise that Visman and Ingamells works may be beneficial and provide relevant, harmonious additions in some areas, and ultimately offer attractive possibilities to sampling practitioners. Such additions may enhance our capabilities to predict sampling difficulties by using a stronger strategy and to design better sampling experiments that would allow us to further understand the heterogeneity of minor constituents, and especially trace constituents. Basically, the suggested integration is essential for sampling trace constituents in the environment, in food, in chemicals and in the pharmaceutical industries.CITATION:Pitard, F F, 2017. The authors conducted a study of backfill practices in underground mines across Canada to assess the current state of backfill usage and to overview potential hazards associated with backfill practice, from preparation to transportation to placement. The primary aim of this study was to cover each component of a typical mine backfill system, and to identify potential incidents leading to the disruption of backfilling operations and any associated corrective actions. This paper, Part I of the study, deals with surface operations consisting of backfill material supply and backfill plant preparation. Part II of the study, which deals with underground operations consisting of backfill transportation and backfill placement, is also presented in these proceedings. A review of safety measures associated with current backfill operations and recommendations for procedures of best practice that should be implemented to reduce fill-related hazards in all mine backfill workplace environments are presented. In general it has been found that system failures normally lead only to minor losses to the operations.

DURING the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of inter-ruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publi-cations a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, there-fore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.

Dioctahedral clay minerals in the volcanic-hosted Golden Cross epithermal Au deposit, New Zealand, have been investigated by petrography, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy/analytical electron microscopy (TEM/AEM) to determine the nature of these minerals in a hydrothermal ore deposit. Heterogeneity in the distribution of dioctahedral clays is observed from the hand-specimen scale to the TEM scale, indicating that primary rock textures and fluid pathways (related to rock type, porosity/permeability and fluid/rock ratios), in addition to temperature, are important factors controlling the distribution. As the proportion of illite in mixed-layer illite/smectite (I/S) decreases, TEM observations show decreasing layer stacking order, parallelism of packets, and packet size, and increasing apparent porosity. AEM structural data show a corresponding decrease in AlIV, AlVI, and K+, and an increase in Si, Ca2+, and Fetotal. The observations of this study indicate that local dioctahedral clay mineral reaction progress is controlled mainly by permeability and structure, but that this is superimposed on a predictable, system-wide clay mineral distribution that is controlled by temperature and fluid/rock ratio.

Oxygen gas bubbles generate on anode during Pb electro-deposition process in PbSiF6-H2SiF6 aqueous solutions at room temperature. Cell voltage varies as the bubbles formed on the anodes surface. The bubble layer on the anode makes a voltage drop that consumes energy in the Pb process, which can be reduced by applying ultrasound on the anode. The effects of ultrasound frequency and anodic current density were investigated with ultrasound on and off, alternatively during the Pb electrode-position process. The removing of the gas bubbles were recorded in association with a drop in the cell voltage. The cell voltage can be lowered by 4% - 6% with ultrasound, which has potential for energy saving in Pb production.

Kaolin, or china clay, is the term applied to a group of hydrous aluminum silicates. Because of its purity, light color, and refractory properties, kaolin is used extensively in the manufacture of high-grade ceramic wares and as a filler by the rubber and paper industries. Although there are numerous pottery and enamelware plants in Texas, and large rubber and paper industries; all of the kaolin used in these plants is from other States, There are two known occurrences of kaolin in Texas, namely, the Leakey deposit in Real County and the several deposits of the Medley district in southern Jeff Davis County. An investigation of the Mueller kaolin deposit in the Medley district was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines. Following an examination of this deposit by W. D. McMillan, engineer in charge of the Texas field office of the Bureau of Mines, a proposal was made to investigate the deposit by diamond core drilling.

The distribution or the userul minerals or Tasmania is so closely connected with the geological structure of the island that it will be convenient to briefly recapitulate the principal ract or its geological history, before describing the ore and other deposits. In many cases these present features which are very puzzling in the absence of knowledge of the structure of the districts in which they are found and in all cases it is of benefit to mining engineers to be acquainted with the main facts of the geological·history of the regions in which they have to carry on operations. Moreover, in speculating as to the origin of lodes and other deposits, we have constantly to rerer to the crumplings or the earth's crust by mountain-making movements, and to the igneous rocks which have been thrust throngh the other strata, to explain the origin or the lode fissures, and this discussion cannot be carried on without knowledge of local geology.The oldest rock yet met with in Tasmania are of Archooan age, and consist of highly crystalline quartzites and micaceous schist. They are most extensively developed towards the western side ot the island, forming a belt parallel to the West Coast from South-West Cape to Cradle fountain; but they also crop out here and there to the west and northward of this belt, where the covering strata or later age have been denuded away. Though not seen in situ in the eastern part of the colony, the abundance or pebbles derived from this formation in the conglomerates of the coal measures shows that it must in those day have formed land surfaces there also, and makes it likely that the archooan strata exist at no great depth: below many of the beds of later age now occupying the surface. Lying unconfortably upon these highly metamorphic strata we find next an extensive series of subcrystalline metamorphic conglomerates, grits, sandstones, slates, and limestones,of Cambro-Silurian age. These are well seen in the Gordou River Basin, along the West Coast Range, aloug the North Coast, and in the goldfields of the north-eastern portion of the colony. They are much broken by later intrusive rocks, and covered by younger rormations, but the series is spread more or less over the whole island.

"Total iron ore reserves in India, as reported by the Indian Bureau of mines, are 23.6 billion tons. Hematite iron ore reserves constitute about 45 % of the total reserve. If we go by the National Steel Policy-2005 projections, India’s supply of hematite iron ore would not last more than 40 years. Laboratory investigations were carried out for the development of a process flow sheet for treating low grade as well as Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ) iron ore. The purpose of these investigations was to aim for better resource utilization.Beneficiation studies were conducted on samples of low grade and siliceous iron ore from the Dalli mines, a captive mine of the Bhilai Steel Plant and BHQ ore from Southern states of India. The process flowsheet, developed for upgrading of low grade iron ore, incorporates wet screening of the ore at 0.5 mm, followed by grinding of the +0.5 mm fraction to below 0.5 mm. The whole –0.5 mm fraction, after grinding, was treated in a conventional hydro-cyclone and stub cyclone followed by treatment in Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separator (WHIMS). This resulted in a concentrate product having >66% Fe content from a feed containing 55.5% Fe with an iron recovery of 48 %. The process flowsheet developed for treating BHQ ore in the laboratory resulted in an increase in iron grade in the concentrate from 43.4 to 61.3 Fe % with a yield of 51.7 % .INTRODUCTIONThe classification of Indian iron ore resources have been made compatible with United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC), which is more scientific and has been adopted in most countries in the world. Iron ore reserves and resources estimated using the UNFC classification system, as of April 01,2000 are about 12,906 million tons of hematite ore and 10,628 million tons of magnetite ore. The Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM) has given a breakdown of these reserves by designation as either lumps or fines of hematite iron ore (Table 1). The percentage of the reserves reported lumps and fines are 42 and 34% of the total reserves respectively. High grade iron ore is less than 10% of the total reserve."

This Bureau of Mines report describes experimental and theoretical studies of diffusion flames in free convection. The cross-coupling between buoyancy-induced flows and the combustion process is explored as it relates to the size, structure, and radiative balance of flames. New data are presented for the size-dependent radiance oscillations of diffusion flames and for the angular distribution of the total radiant intensity from a small methanol pool flame. Both amplitude and frequency of the measured oscillations are compared with theoretical predictions that are based on a new view of the structure of diffusion flames. This new view, which is at variance with the traditional one, assumes uniform reaction in the diffusive mixing zone, and recognizes the significance of the role played by convective buoyancy and its duality in both aiding and impeding flame propagation. Buoyancy quenches propagation at low burning velocities, introducing a real discontinuity in the combustion rate. A "flammable volume" is thus defined as that bound between lean- and rich-limit contours. However, in the flow disturbances generated by combustion waves that consume that volume, buoyancy aids propagation by promoting the convective mixing of a new flammable volume. The measured radiance oscillations are manifestations of these propagation and remixing cycles.

Recent studies and limited tests indicate favorable results utilizing high accuracy electronic detonator technology over conventional non-electric pyrotechnic systems. This study discusses the application of this technology using the Daveytronic programmable system in an on-going production basis. The study quantifies the performance as it relates to fragmentation, excavation, vibration and productivity in an eastern U.S. aggregate mining operation. In order to insure accurate data, tight field controls were adhered to during the drilling and blasting process as they related to blast design, bench preparation, pattern layout, drilling and blasthole loading. Following the blast the excavation and crushing procedures were studied to quantify any down stream advantages due to improvements in fragmentation. This study will help provide the industry with information as to the advantages of high accuracy electronic blasting systems over conventional pyrotechnic systems and show the results of an operation utilizing electronic detonator technology through their production season.

Observations of pillar conditions in limestone mines showed that the presence of weak bands in the limestone can result in pillar damage at stresses that are lower than one would otherwise expect. The objective of this National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health study was to investigate the mechanism of failure caused by the presence of weak bands by using a series of numerical models based on realistic physical properties. The effect of the weak bands on pillar strength was also investigated by developing a series of pillar models with different width-to-height ratios and determining their strength by simulating a servo-controlled loading condition. The material properties of the bands and the limestone were varied and their effects on pillar strength were determined. Model results demonstrated failure development similar to the pillars observed in the field. The weak bands were seen to develop tensile stresses in the limestone as they extrude under increasing stress. The limestone fails in tension at a much lower stress than its expected uniaxial compressive strength. The results showed the load bearing capacity of the pillars can be reduced significantly by the presence of multiple thin weak bands. The degree of strength reduction is largely dependent on the compressive strength, the frictional resistance and the thickness of the weak bands. Single weak bands do not affect pillars as severely as multiple bands. However, the model results show that a single thick weak band, which comprises more than about 2 percent of the pillar height, can cause a significant reduction in pillar strength. The weakening effect of the bands become less severe as the pillar width-to-height ratio is increased. Field observation of spalling and failure associated with weak bands in limestone pillars show that the failure mechanism in the models resembles the observed failure. The model results provide insight into the important factors affecting pillar strength in the presence of weak banded materials.

"Two areas are involved in the research work of the comminution process (crushing and grinding). The first one involves the changes of the size class distribution values that are definded by the differential equations in the function of the ore property and working conditions. The second area involves the comminution of the different levels in order to optimize the working parameters and to decrease the operational costs in the grinding process.We have studied, in detail, the possibility of functioning the crusher at the maximal loading, over 4500 kN, ball mills with diameters larger than 5.0 m and semiautogenous mills with diameters larger than 10.0 m.Using the computers, we have achieved the maximal loading range of the crusher, over Fc ? 4500 kN in the crushing process. In the grinding process, using the adequate differential equations in the automation process, we have established the correlation between the pulp mass capacity in the mill, pulp dencity, ore fineness in the pulp and recirculating ore charge.With the appopriate text, equations and graphs, this paper shows the results of our several years research work in the laboratory and in the ore comminution plant of Majdanpek Copper Mine."
