"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. This paper presents an analysis of fracture depth and intensity due to subsidence over the longwall panel. Sonic reflection techniques were utilized to determine fracture depth, and a variation of p-wave velocity was used as an indication of the fracture intensity. Instrumentation has been tested for consistency and accuracy first in the laboratory using small scale models, then applied in the field in two mine sites with different mining geometry and geologic conditions. A new sonic viewer was utilized for sonic velocity measurements. Regular hammering method was on acoustic source. The results were concurrent with monitored horizontal strain profiles and measured open fractures over the longwall panels.

The benefication of non-sulfide or non-metallic minerals by froth flotation has been practiced commercially for at least 30 years. In the pioneer stages of development of this flotation art, most of the promoters investigated were fatty acids or soaps that had been found to float sulfide minerals. When commercial application of froth flotation started to assume importance in the late 1920' s and 1930's, a great deal of fundamental research work was done in the laboratory (11-14, 19, 22, 23, 26, 29, 32). Among other subjects, this work included studies of the relative effectiveness of the different fatty acids and their salts on the flotability of various non-sulfide and non-metallic minerals. The successful present-day use of fatty acid and petroleum sulfonate type promoters results from better understanding of the principles of non-sulfide flotation plus the developnent of effective selectivity modifying agents. Many investigators have contributed to a greater appreciation of the numerous interrelated factors involved in fatty acid and soap flotation of non-sulfide minerals. Of these, mention should be made of recent fundamental studies by Tagart and Arbiter (31); Wolstenholme and Schulman (35); Schulman and Smith (28); Wark and his co-workers(3,4) Du FIietz(l5); and J. Leja(24). According to J. Rogers, K. L. Sutherland and E. E. and I. W. Wark(27), "the basic requirements for a 'collector' in flotation are that it shall form a film over the surface of the mineral to be floated and that this film should be oriented so that hydrocarbon (non-polar) groups form the effective surface." When modified in that way, the mineral surface possesses some degree of air avidity. All investigators would agree with Taggart, Taylor and Ince (33)that such a film can be produced only if the collector compound contains an active (polar) group to be attracted to the mineral surface, as well as the non-polar group. The commonly used anionic-type promoters for non-sulfide, non-metallic and metallic oxide ores include: 1. Fatty acids, and their soaps and emulsions. 2. Fatty acids residues — "pitches" and "foots." 3. Sulfonated and sulfated fatty acids and so-called "petroleum sulfonates." 4. Paraffin chain salts — sulfonated and sulfated higher alcohols. 5. Cyclic organic acids or salts, such as naph-thenic acid and naphthenates. Certain fatty acids are more effective than others as promoters for particular minerals under certain specified conditions. Some of the more costly fatty acids or collectors of the paraffin chain salt type may give improved selectivity in some instances and are being used commercially in a limited number of operations. Local availability may dictate the choice of the fatty acid used — for example, the use of palmoil fatty acid for flotation of copper carbonate ores in the Belgian Congo. Coconut oil fatty acids have also found limited use.

There is now a new generation of mobile crushing and screening plant systems available which have been developed based on the motivation of reducing truck haulage. Newly designed mobile crushing and screening plant systems have the advantages of mobility, flexibility, economy and reliable performance, making this system very appealing for small- to medium-sized projects or projects where a number of resources are separated by distance.A brief review of the past history and experience with transportable crushing plants provides an insight into some of the issues with transportable plants in mineral processing. A closer look at a simple model based on exploiting small but high-grade orebodies suggests the concept has merit, however there are many more engineering, logistics, legal, technical and management aspects which have limited the application of such a concept in the resource sector. This paper explores the concept in detail and endeavours to analyse the preferred commodities and scenarios under which the concept could be used and the economic and logistical limitations for iron ore. The paper also looks at the risk assessment criteria to be applied in selecting the type of resource projects where the model could be applied successfully. Other aspects considered in this paper are the project planning requirements, technical and economic feasibility, bankability and operability. Reference is made to the operating experience of contractors at a number of sites and feedback from the resource companies as managers of the projects.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2013. "There is large electricity generation potential in discard coal, both in stockpiles and current arisings. Power stations with a combined capacity of up to 18 GW electrical (GWe) could be fuelled by discard coal. Modern circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) boilers, with capital costs comparable to equivalent pulverized fuel (PF) boilers, are capable of utilizing discard coal at a high efficiency while reducing sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions though the use of limestone sorbent for ‘in-situ’ capture.A detailed economic assessment of the feasibility of electricity generation from discard coal, comprising material and energy balances and the construction of a discounted cash flow (DCF) table, shows that it is also potentially attractive from an economic perspective. A base case analysis shows positive net present values (NPVs) and an internal rate of return (IRR) of 21.4%. Sensitivity analyses on critical parameters show that the economic viability is heavily dependent on parameters such as coal cost and the value of electricity. The project becomes unattractive above a coal price of approximately R300 per ton and at an electricity value below approximately 59c per kilowatt-hour (kWh).Site- and project-specific information such as the delivered cost of coal, location and efficacy of sorbents, and effective value of the electricity produced can be used as input to the economic analysis to evaluate siting options and sorbent source options for such a power station."

The fatigue behavior of AM60 high pressure die casting magnesium alloys was studied in a straincontrolled manner. The fatigue test was interrupted every 2,000 cycles for X-ray tomography scanning. The specimen was removed to be scanned on a desktop micro-CT system. The value of using X-ray tomography in a fatigue properties study was assessed with respect to porosity, cracks and fracture surfaces. The 3D analysis and model results showed porosity could be well measured and modelled in 3D. Defects bands are made of pores under 50 µm in volume-equivalent sphere diameter. Larger pores are randomly distributed in the region between two defect bands. Observation of cracks by X-ray tomography occurs in three ways such that the 3D model gives the best illustration of crack-porosity interaction while the other two methods have better detectability on crack initiation and crack tip observation. X-ray tomography is also of value in failure analysis on fracture surfaces. By summarizing X-ray tomography data during fatigue testing and observing fracture surfaces on a 3D model, a better understanding on the crack initiation, crack-porosity interaction and the morphology of fracture surface is achieved.

Mining is a fundamental activity on which modern society and the world's economy are entirely dependent. Mining investors, large and small, invest on an international scale, frequently being active in several countries.   Prior to committing investment to new countries, the prudent investor will consider the risk involved by analysing a number of physical, financial, administrative and political parameters that impact on the potential financial returns it is seeking. This paper considers these risk factors in relationship to New Zealand and six competitor countries. The conclusion is that for reasons largely within the control of our politicians, New Zealand is a high risk country for mining investors.

This document details the method whereby Allen Corporation of America gathered and analyzed data and developed an annotated bibliography of metal and nonmetal mine fire reports (1950-1979). The primary objective of this program was to develop the annotated bibliography which included MSHA accident reports and periodicals. Two additional objectives were to gather data on non-reportable fires and to conduct statistical analyses on the data to delineate trends. Data was acquired from three major areas: periodicals, MSHA fire reports, and mine safety directors. Data was separated into reportable fires (at least ½ - hour duration or injury), non-reportable fires, and opinion data. The data was then analyzed by time trends, state, ore, ignition source, burning substance, location, equipment, detection, duration, injuries, fatalities, and successful extinguishing agent. The authors make a number of recommendations: (1) improved stationary electrical equipment design and fire protection, (2) improved design of mobile equipment to separate combustibles from ignition sources, (3) improved maintenance, (4) improved housekeeping, and (5) improved training. The document is divided into two volumes and an appendix. Volume I contains data acquisition procedures, data analysis procedures, and conclusions and recommendations. Volume II contains a chronological list of mine fires and fifteen indexes to assist the reader in locating fire incident report of interest. The Appendix contains the annotated bibliography of over 300 metal and nonmetal mine fire reports and journal articles and a list of non-reportable fires.

The Heartland Corridor Clearance Improvement Project is part of a regional Public-Private initiative to allow double stack container trains a direct route from the Port of Norfolk through Virginia, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and into Central Ohio. In the Preliminary Engineering stage, 30 existing tunnels were assessed and 28 were found to need clearance improvements to allow the use of double stack trains. Alternative tunnel enlargement methods were developed to achieve the desired clearance improvements, while maintaining structural integrity and minimizing disruption to train traffic. This paper summarizes the geometric and condition investigations of the existing tunnels, as well as describes the preferred methodologies to achieve the desired clearance. The clearance improvements will be implemented beginning in the summer of 2007.

NIOSH has developed an active proximity warning system called HASARD (Hazardous Area Signaling and Ranging Device) for warning workers as they approach known dangerous areas around heavy mining equipment and other dangerous work zones. HASARD is composed of a transmitter and a receiver. The transmitter generates a 60-kHz magnetic field using one or more wire loop antennas. Each antenna is adjusted to establish a magnetic field pattern for each hazardous area. The receiver, worn by the worker, is a magnetic field strength meter. The received signal is compared against preset levels which are calibrated to identify levels of danger. The receiver outputs can include visual, audible, and vibratory indicators and it can also be made to disable machine functions. HASARD was field tested on a Joy 12 continuous miner, a Komatsu 210 M Haulpak, and on a highwall launch vehicle. Slight modifications were made for each application. HASARD provided warnings as designed and proved to be rugged enough to withstand the harshest of production environments.

The effect of fragmentation size distribution as it relates to front end loader productivity was evaluated by comparing loader cycle times to fragmentation size of the shot rock. At Gold Mine in Southern Utah, a gold deposit containing both limestone and sandstone formations were blasted in the same shot.

To determine whether preheating coals before carbonization would improve the coking properties of the coals, particularly the weaker coking coals, 3 coals, 1 each from Illinois, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania, and a blend of the Illinois with a Pocahontas coal were preheated before testing for coking properties in the Bureau's BM-AGA pilot oven. The effects of preheating on the chemical and physical proper-ties of the coals and on the yields of carbonization products and strength of the coke produced from the preheated coals were determined, as were also the effects of bulk density, gaseous atmosphere, and residence time during preheating. Most benefit from preheating was found with weaker or oxidized coking coals, whereas the more strongly coking coals and blends showed little effect. Direct charging of preheated coal to the coke oven without cooling gave better coke, increased yield of tar, and decreased yield of gas. INTRODUCTION Although 94 percent of today's coal production comes from fields east of the Mississippi, the Eastern States have only about one-third of the Nation's recoverable reserves. West Virginia, which now produces more than any other State, has much smaller reserves than Utah, Colorado, and Wyoming.5/ However, the manufacture of iron and steel in Western States, which has increased greatly since World War I, is handicapped by the scarcity of high-grade coking coals, such as are plentiful in the Appalachian region. Unless a practical method of improving the cokemaking property of local coals is developed, ferrous metallurgical industries in the West must continue to use inferior coking coals and to pay high shipping charges for better coals.

Anode slimes produced during copper electrorefining are a valuable source of silver, gold, selenium and tellurium. The conventional pyrometallurgical process for treating slimes involves preliminary leaching in sulphuric acid followed by smelting in a reverberatory furnace with fluxes, but it is slow and has many recycle streams. The chemistry of the phases and the reactions that occur in slimes smelting are poorly understood and and this prevents major improvements to the process. Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted using unleached slimes, with and without the addition of fluxes and under neutral, oxidising and reducing conditions. Results show that selenium is readily removed as gaseous selenium dioxide and that molten Cu-Ag-Se-O phases form when fluxes are added. Oxidation-refining of these phases by air injection and flux addition can result in the formation of silver suitable for further electrorefining

The experience of the past 2 years has demonstrated clearly that mine explosions with heavy loss of life can be prevented. The investigations of the Safety Division of the United States Bureau of Mines disclose that during the fiscal year 1934 there were only 28 deaths from mine explosions in the United States, and during the fiscal year 1935 there were 54 deaths, a very favorable reduction when compared with an average death toll of 265 from this cause during the 20-year period prior to 1929. Although the frequency of occurrence of explosions has not decreased greatly during the past 7 years, there has been a marked decrease in severity, indicating that the coal-mining industry is taking more effective precautions to prevent the spread of explosions. A number of large coal-producing States, which in past years have experienced numerous disastrous explosions, have been free from such disasters for continuous periods of as much as 5 years or even longer. A study of several hundred mine explosions occurring in the United States during the past 10 years or more indicates that the factors mainly responsible for these explosions are inadequate or defective ventilation and disregard of the hazards from explosive gas. Both of these factors are subject to control, and if controlled it is safe to say that deaths from explosions would be reduced to a negligible number as relatively few explosions are now initiated by dust.

Cessation of mining on the Bendigo goldfield makes it evident that, as the older generation fades away, knowledge of the famous Bendigo saddle reefs will be limited in the future by their written records. It is important therefore that the summarised account by D. E. Thomas (1953) in the Geology of Australian Ore Deposits should not be misleading. Fig. 6 in this article is stated to portray a cross section and longitudinal section through a series of gold shoots in the Garden Gully 300 ft. reef. The gold shoot along the capof the saddle reef is represented as extending down the east leg in a series of prongs, with the tips of the prongs about 50 ft. apart. It is the purpose of this note to indicate that this illustration can be suspected to be a diagram of the old stopes instead of a diagram of the distribution of gold in the quartz.The original sketches of Figs. 6 and 7 in Thomas' account were extracted, I believe, from the field note books of H. S. Whitelaw, years after his death in the late twenties. Whitelaw was stationed in the Bendigo office of the Geological Survey of Victoria, carrying out geological surveys of the Bendigo mines. He was there for many years before the Gold Research committee started its investigations in 1916 and he was acutely aware of the problem attached to the distribution of gold in the reefs. He had felt concern that manyauriferous reefs were being mined without adequate study and record and he decided, as he expressed it to me, to pick up what he could as he went along. There can be little doubt that the diagrams of Figs. 6 and 7 are products of this resolve.Opportunities to investigate gold occurrences at Bendigo were limited before 1916 because the field was operated by Manuscript received at The Institute 18th November, 1960.

Furthermore, the published reports of the Bureau on subjects pertaining to petroleum and natural-gas technology come to the direct attention of a relatively large number of persons, whose interest in results and appreciation of the value of this type of work have caused them to be kept currently informed regarding available data.

The New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) was the first major water supply tunnel for New York City. The 50-km (31-mi) long tunnel has 33 open shafts 6 m (20 ft) to 121 m (397 ft) deep. The tunnel and shafts are lined with brick and mortar, with cast iron lining and pressure covers in six pressurized shafts. Details of the 1895 construction are provided and compared to modern construction techniques. The paper provides rehabilitation techniques for the shafts and pressure covers, including grouting, epoxy lining, temporary bulkhead design and installation and placement of tremie concrete 98 m (320ft) below the water level in a 122 m (400ft)deep shaft using a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to monitor the placement.

Models made by encasing strain-gage networks in epoxy are described and evaluated. With this technique relatively complex models can be constructed in which any number of gages can be located and alined precisely. Although the gages are an integral part of the model matrix, they create no important mechanical or thermal stresses. Model construction techniques and experimental data proved reproducible and reliable. In addition, the sGlution obtained with these models to the problem of the state of stress around a circular hole in a plate subject to a plane stress condition was in agreement with theoretical, photoelastic, and finite-element solutions.
