The following note on the mineral association in the ores of the Tennant Creek Goldfield, Northern Territory, is largely based on Mineragraphic Reports Nos. 49, 89, 117 and 193 of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research. These reports are the results of the examinations of auriferous specimens from a number of mines of the goldfield and are now supplemented by the examination of further specimens from Mt. Samuel forwarded by Mr. V. G. Martin.The Tennant Creek Goldfield lies in the central portion of the Northern Territory, about Lat. 190 35', Long. 1340 15', on the Overland Telegraph Line and about 369 miles north of Alice Springs. It comprise an area extending about 50 miles east and west, by 30 miles north and south.The geology of the goldfield has been described by Woolnough. (2)The rocks of the area are of pre-Cambrian age, and consist of talcose, chloritic, micaceous and siliceous schists of sedimentary origin, interbedded with flows or dykes of schistose quartz porphyry, and of granites which were intruded subsequent to the regional metarporphism of the area. The rocks are moderately folded, but the beclding tends to be obscured by a pronounced east-west cleavage. The most continuous orebodies run east and west, parallel with this cleavage.Numerous lenses of hematite occur in the schists, with their long axes, parallel to the cleavage, and the gold values of the field are frequently associated with such hematite bodies. The dimensions of these hematite bodies are variable but rarely exceed a length of 300 ft., with an average thickness between 10 and 30 ft.; the original vertical dimensions are thought to be comparable with their length. The lenses tend to occur in groups when they are arranged en echelon both horizontally and in depth; and erosion has exposed individual lenses to different degrees, ranging from incipient exposure to complete removal. The existence of unexposed hematite lenses at depth has been proved by geophysical surveys, coupled with drilling tests. (3)A few of the bodies are pipe-like. Many are surrounded by a casing of brecciated rock, composed of fragments of hematite and shattered country rock, and presumably caused by subsequent earth movements which crushed the country rock against the resistant hematite bodies. In the early days of the field most of the important gold occurences were found within these crushed zones, or, to a less extent, within the hematite bodies themselves.These occurrences appeared to be associated only with those hematite lenses which were intersected by quartz veins or other lines of weakness, of later origin than the crushing. The North Shore Connector (NSC) project will extend the Allegheny County Port Authority?s Light Rail Transit System from downtown Pittsburgh below the Allegheny River to the North Shore via twin bore tunnels. Jet grouting, diaphragm walls, and soil mixing were selected as cost-effective technically viable ground improvement and support of excavation techniques. Jet grouting was specified to provide break-out (egress) and break-in (ingress) block sections at the tunnel boring machine (TBM) launching and receiving pits. Jet grout treatment was also used adjacent to buildings with shallow foundations and below retaining walls along the tunnel alignment. A new method for measuring jet grout column diameter based on electrical resistivity was employed on the project. New equipment was introduced in the U.S for constructing soil mix temporary support of excavation using a soil-mix technique termed Cutter Soil Mixing (CSM) due to the use of two vertical cutting wheels that have evolved from diaphragm wall trench cutter technology. The system allows for continuous water tight soil mix panel construction including steel beams. This paper highlights some applications of jet grouting and various support of excavation systems (e.g. slurry walls, cement bentonite walls and CSM walls), including new innovative techniques (e.g. Cyljet and CSM) used under the constraints of an urban environment.

A method for the detection and analysis of tin in cassiterite ores is discussed. An empirical relationship was established between the tin content of an ore sample and the percentage absorption that this sample produced in a Mossbauer experiment. The time taken to complete an assay with this method is much less than with any of the methods currently in use. The equipment can be adapted readily for use in the field.

"Certain mining methods (eg. Cut-and-fill) result in the contamination of run-of-mine ore with shotcrete. This shotcrete remains mixed with the ore throughout processing. Experimentation performed by Falconbridge Limited revealed that underground contamination of ore by shotcrete (eg. as little as 1% by weight) has led to ill-effects on the nickel recoveries from the flotation process in the mill. The nickel recoveries of contaminated samples were lower than tests without the shotcrete Contamination.To optimize flotation circuits it is important to know why the contamination has created these effects and also to find a method to abate or remove them. Laboratory testing showed that the age of the shotcrete was a factor in it’s effect on nickel recoveries. Younger aged shotcrete gave nickel recoveries lower than baseline nickel recoveries with no contamination. Older shotcrete gave nickel recoveries similar to the baseline.Literature on other cementitious material contaminations on ore revealed that a possible means of remediating this problem is the use of acid in the flotation. The initial pH in the flotation pulp was designed to be pH 9.2, but with the young shotcrete contamination the pH was in the neighbourhood of 10.5. Acid addition may act as a means of lowering the pH to the optimal operational value. Laboratory test work showed that acid addition brought nickel recoveries closer to the baseline."

Interest in those physical properties of minerals which might be used to good effect in prospecting is not new. Early in the nineteenth century attempts were made in th'e Cornish mines to measure the natural electric potentials set up by chemical changes proceeding in the lodes. The distortion of the earth's magnetic field by bodies of strongly magnetic iron ore received early recognition in Sweden. Treasure-finders, working on the principle of electrical induction, appear to have been invented about eighty years ago, though were probably not then applied to mineral exploration. By the end of the nineteenth century Eotvos, a Hungarian physicist, had constructed a highly sensitive type of torsion balance capable of measuring the minute distortions in the earth's field of gravitation resulting from variations in the density of the materials composing the crust. During the first decade of this century he demonstrated its value in tracing rock-salt deposits in virtue of their low density compared with the surrounding rocks. Geophysical prospecting began to be recognised as having a very definite value and its development gathered momentum. Its great expansion took place after the 1914-18 war, when its value in oil exploration was amply demonstrated, and this expansion has continued to the present time and shows no signs of abating.Divisions of Applied Geophysics.The four main divisions of applied geophysics are electrical, magnetic gravitational and seismic. With the importance of ores of radio-active metals, one might add to these a radio-active division. The first two are more important to the field of mining, but techniques based on gravitational attraction have their uses in particular cases. Seismic methods are not generally suited to the exploration of metallic ores, but have proved of enormous value in the search for petroleum. With vast quantities of oil as the prize, more money has been lavished on the deve10pment and practice of these methods than on all the others put together.Geophysical Prospecting Methods.Geophysical prospecting methods may be used to detect a mineral deposit directly in virtue of differences in the intensity of some physical attribute common to it and the enclosing country rock. Examples of this are the detection of rock-salt by gravity measurements, or of iron ore by magnetic methods. Of much wider application, however, is the indireot approach in which the aim is to determine, by geophysical means, the geological structures controlling the disposition of mineral deposits. These structures may be partly known from geological work, in which case geophysical methods are useful adjuncts. Where, because of an 'unbroken cover of overburden, no useful geological information presents itself, scout drilling or geophysical prospecting are the only alternatives. Overburden is here intended to mean any covering material not, involved in the structures controlling the mineral deposits. Prospecting for petroleum amounts to the detecting of favourable reservoir structures, and as the chief types of such are the same the world over...

Keywords: MgO-MgR2O3 refractory, SO2-containing gases, chemical attack The reaction mechanisms occurring when MgO-MgR2O3 refractories are exposed to SO2-containing gas atmospheres were examined. The study examined the characteristic structures of magnesite-chrome, chrome-magnesite and magnesite refractories exposed to SO2-O2 gas mixture at temperatures of 700°C to 1350°C. The phase characterization was conducted with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results show that the physical characteristics of the refractory matrix along the grain boundaries are important refractory features during chemical attack from SO2-containing gas. Upon heating in SO2-containing gas, the changes in phase-chemical compositions and accompanying grain growth causes loosening of the structure and the pore volume promotes gas diffusion. The chemical reactions that occur form stable sulfate compounds identified as MgSO4, CaSO4 and CaMg3(SO4)4, and lead to disintegration of various phase structures and consequently erosion of the refractory. In conclusion, the reaction mechanisms in MgO-MgR2O3 refractories exposed to SO2-containing gases progress through a combination of structural disintegration and chemical attack.

New Zealand SteelÆs Waikato North Head mine, situated at the mouth of the Waikato River, supplies approximately 1.2 million tonnes per annum of titanomagnetite concentrate to the Glenbrook steel mill. The mine draws its fresh water supply from the Waikato River, abstracting approximately 38 000 cubic metres per day. During the concentration process of the ironsand, slimes are liberated into the plant wastewater. The plant wastewater, storm water and groundwater from the mining operation is treated and passed through settling ponds. Around 118 400 cubic metres per day of water are drawn from the recycle settling ponds for use in the concentration plant. Typically a daily average of up to 15 100 cubic metres of the treated water is discharged back to the Waikato River. Since the early 1990s significant improvements have been made to the water treatment at Waikato North Head mine and regularly the mine discharge water quality is similar or better than background river water quality.

In the course of the Bureau of Mines investigation relative to the causes, behavior, and control of anthracite-mine fires, attention was directed toward the correlation between the temperature of oxidation and the gaseous oxidation products in the range of temperatures between 100° and 350°C4/. These tests, made on a high-grade anthracite to determine the amount of oxygen consumed and the mounts of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane evolved when air was passed through samples of the anthracite at various elevated temperatures, showed that the gases evolved and their relative proportions vary with temperature, constitute a means for determining the probable temperature of the anthracite, and thus permit detection of incipient heating beers dangerous fire hazard exists. As the relationships mentioned are affected somewhat by the amount of previous oxidation of the coal, it was deemed desirable to know to what extent they might vary owing to this cause. It was also considered desirable to have a means for estimating the extent of oxidation from the gas analysis, as this would permit a more accurate estimate of probable temperature. Finally, it seemed desirable to know how much the composition of coal might vary over an extended period of oxidation, since this was previously suggested5/ as a possible means for estimating the probable maximum oxidation temperature to which a sample of coal had been subjected.

With the development of Wuhan's city planning in China, new buildings of moderate and high store have been increasing day by day. Precast concrete piles or cast-in-site piles were used in the major foundations of the buildings. In process of their design and construction geotechnical engineers are concerned very much about practical bearing capacity and construction quality of pile foundations. In order to grasp accurately the cases static loading or vibration test is used generally to judge them. At present, the major questions in existence are that although a load is applied directly on pile and measured datums are reliable for static loading test, it must take a lot of work and longer time and engineering cost is higher. A vibration test has the advantages of which checking up of pile quality can be performed rapidly, the test is simple and convenient, and scope measured wide. But bigger error exists generally in measured datums. Therefore, it is nesessary to make vibration test on piles more perfect for pile foundation engineering. It is stated in paper that adapted technique of vibration test on piles is quite right in developmental direction sense for pile foundation. There are a great variety of vibration test methods on piles. A few of methods which often are adapted in practice can not meet the need of different practical engineering. It is also an important question whether the instruments of vibration test and relevant computer softewares make a response accurately for practical case. Different sequence of operation and technical requirements comes into being some influence directly on the test results. Meanwhile, different combination of soil stratigraphy, soil texture, groundwater and pile could cause different error of test datum. It is necessary to analyse and judge objectively the results of vibration test. Therefore, on the basis of developing and perfecting further the technique of vibration test, the applied technique of vibration test should be standardized so that better test results can be obtained.

This paper reports on a study of 43 compression load tests (five fully instrumented) and ten pullout tests of auger cast-in-place (ACIP) piles in sand. Eight design methods reported in the literature were used to predict the measured pile capacities. Ultimate load capacities of the ACIP load tests were determined using two different definitions of ultimate capacity and compared with predictions. Load transfer behavior was determined from a study of the fully instrumented pile tests and compared to predicted values. Recommendations are made regarding the design approach most appropriate for these foundations and the best procedure for estimating ultimate capacity from pile load tests.

The metallurgical laboratory data developed in this study indicate an improved electrowinning process for producing higher purity cerium ingot. A typical sample of the Reno electrocerium contains 99.9 weight-percent cerium and the following impurities: Total other rare-earth elements, less than 0.04 percent; iron not detected; silicon and aluminum, less than 0.02 percent each; calcium plus magnesium, less than 0.01 percent; carbon, 0.01 percent; oxygen, 0.002 percent; hydrogen, 0.0003 percent; and nitrogen, 0.0015 percent.

Gas well tests were performed on 17 wells in the Roma area. The procedure used in the test programme incorporates an initial isochronal test followed by what is described as the "two flow drawdown" technique. The second flow of the two flow drawdown test was conducted for sufficient time to allow transient investigation of the surrounding reservoir. This combination of tests allows the evaluation of stabilized production capacity in addition to the determination ,of several important reservoir characteristics.It also provides a qualitative indication of reserves, by reflecting the presence or absence of reservoir boundaries within the drainage area affected during the test.

Aqueous oxidation is a possible alternative to roasting for the processing of gold bearing arsenopyrite (FeAsS) concentrates. The reaction has been studied by voltammetry and this has shown, for the first time, that FeAsS can be readily dissolved without passivation at room temperature in dilute sulphuric acid at relatively modest oxidation potentials (0.7 V SHE). The reaction forms sulphur on the mineral surface and the oxidant consumption is thus minimal. Two practical modes of slurry oxidation are listed.

This international symposium was convened to assess the current state of knowledge concerning the health hazards that might be associated with the ingestion and inhalation of fibrous particles produced from the processing of taconite ore. Concern about fibrous particles in taconite arose from their similarities to amphibole asbestos minerals that are known to be human carcinogens. The mineralogical characteristics of asbestos fibers are reviewed and compared with the fibrous particles known to be present in taconite ore from the eastern end of the Iron Range. The epidemiological and experimental animal studies for asbestos-related disease (including gastrointestinal cancer from asbestos in dinking water)were critically evaluated andcompared to those of the fibrous minerals in the taconite. The focus was on the amphiboles in the cummingtonite?grunerite and tremolite?ferroactinolite series and other fibrous particles in both the Iron Range and the Duluth Complex. This included examination of the reported occurrence of any asbestiform ferroactinolite, crocidolite asbestos, chrysotile asbestos, etc. In addition, an effort was made to provide a scientific framework to address fibrous minerals, which may be associated with nonferrous mineral deposits in the Duluth Complex. State-of-the-art risk assessment models for asbestos were presented. Risk assessment scenarios were developed for taconite-derived fibers at environmental exposure levels related to the operation of the Silver Bay taconite processing facility. These calculated risks were found to be trivial even after it was assumed that all mineral fibers were as carcinogenic as amphibole asbestos.
