The Cliffs and Associates Limited (CAL) 500,000 tpy HBI plant located in Trinidad was commissioned after modifications in early 2001. This plant employs the novel Lurgi Circored® process to reduce iron ore fines using a combination of circulating fluidized bed and conventional fluidized bed reactors in a hydrogen based. This paper will review the advantages offered by working in the Caribbean nation of Trinidad and Tobago, the Circored® processes, and plant start-up experience.

South Arturo is a “Carlin-type”, breccia-hosted, oxide gold deposit located at the north end of the Carlin Trend. The discovery hole was drilled in July 2005 from mine dumps 1,000 feet south of the Dee open pit. Discovery hole (BD-72) encountered a cumulative 245 feet @ 0.056 opt Au beneath 850 feet of post mineral Tertiary Carlin Formation. Oxidation extends to depths greater than 2,000 feet in the deposit area. The deposit is presently in definition drilling stage with approximately 190,000 feet of drilling completed to date. A resource estimate is in progress. This paper will focus on the discovery and descriptive characteristics of the mineralization.

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. A unique phosphine-based sulfide mineral promoter, AEROPHINE 3418A, is also produced. The origins of AEROPHINE 3418A promoter date back to the 1960's, when it was established that sulfide mineral collectors based on phosphine chemistry demonstrated efficacy. This new collector chemistry was found to provide flotation performance differing significantly from those of more traditional thiol collector chemistries such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, thionocarbamates and those with xanthogen groups. Material handling in open pit mining accounts for about 50% of production costs. The selection and deployment of efficient, safe, and economic loading and haulage systems is thus critical to the production process. The problems of truck and shovel selection and sizing include determination of the optimal number and capacities of haulage and loading units, as well as their allocation and operational strategies. Critical survey and analysis of the literature has shown that deterministic, stochastic, and experimental approaches to these problems result in considerably different outputs. This paper presents a comprehensive simulation framework for the problem of truck and shovel selection and sizing based on the random processes underlying the network-continuous-discrete event nature of the mining operation. The framework builds on previous research in this field and attempts to address limitations of available methodologies in the form of a comprehensive algorithm. To test the validity of the framework a large open pit mine was evaluated. The stochastic processes governing the uncertainties underlying the material loading and haulage input variables were defined and built into the stochastic model. Discrete event simulation was used to simulate the stochastic model. The proposed model resulted in several modifications to the case study.

Green rust (GR) are layered Fe(II)-Fe(III) double hydroxides, having a pyroaurite-type structure consisting of positively charged hydroxide layers and hydrated ions in interlayers. This special feature of GR is very efficient for wastewater treatment as the pollutants are easily taken in or exchanged with the anions in the interlayers. It can be simply and cost-effectively produced by electrocoagulation (EC). Chicken processing plant (CPP) produces large amount of wastewater containing variety of readily biodegradable organic compounds, fats, and proteins. The possible re-use of properly treated CPP wastewater would be economic and environment friendly. In this study, we present our work on treatment of CPP wastewater using EC, specifically for the removal of COD. Analysis of the EC-treated water for reuse in the same plant is discussed considering the U.S.EPA regulations. Two types of EC-reactors were used for this purpose. To better understand the treatment mechanism, EC-floc was also characterized using XRD and SEM-EDS.

Development on the North Kalgurli mine has established a major penetration of ore into calc schist. This is controlled by a system of east-dipping strike faults. Previously, most calc schist ore bodies were regarded as being confined to the quartz dolerite greenstonecak schist contact environment.INTRODUCTIONOne of the most interesting and economically important developments which has taken place in the Kalgoorlie Field over the past 20 years is the proved penetration of ore into calc schist on the North Kalgurli Mine. This is quite extensive, both laterally and in depth, and has occasioned some modification of geological thought in the search for additional ore sources.Ore has been mined in calc schist almost since the first major gold discoveries were made and the principal features of the various types of deposit are well covered in the literature of the field. However, occurrences in calc schist have not been characterised by the same degree of continuity or frequency as the innumerable lode formations in the more favourable quartz dolerite, and there has been a tendency to regard them as isolated and discontinuous ore bearing structures, occurring only under very special conditions.It is not intended to describe the whole range of calc schist ore occurrences but only major controlling structures, whose penetration therein has been definitely established and in which an appreciable amount of ore has been and is still being found. It is considered that similar structures may present a major objective for future exploratory work in other parts of the field.

In Australia and worldwide, open cut mining has become increasingly common over the last few decades through changes in excavation technology and ore economics. However, such operations frequently leave a legacy of open mine pits once mining ceases. Pit lakes will then form in mine pits that extend below the water table when dewatering operations cease. Pit lake waters are typically contaminated with metals, metalloids, saline or acidic/alkaline and rarely approach natural water body chemistry. Physically, pit lakes have unique bathymetries, are often strongly wind sheltered and have very small catchments. Nevertheless, pit lake waters often constitute a vast resource but of limited beneficial use (due to water quality issues); with a potential to contaminate regional surface and ground water resources. Water in pit lakes has the potential to be useful for a range of purposes in the Australian context of characteristic hot, dry climate and relatively few natural water bodies. Consequently, pit lakes can be seen to represent either a significant liability or a water resource to mining companies and regional communities. However, the lack of knowledge on pit lakes continues to hinder their proper management. This paper summarises the limited information currently available on water quality associated with Australian pit lakes. Information on pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quantity and quality is not nationally collated and requires immediate and ongoing attention from both mining companies and regulating authorities. Lack of a readily available database for pit lake occurrence, distribution and water quality fails to realise the potential for these water resources by both mining companies and Australian communities. Lack of access to pit lake quantity and water quality data may also lead to failure to manage this significant source of mining environmental risk.

The steps for the beneficiation of iron ores differ from ore to ore, depending on the mineralogical phases of the particular iron ore and the nature of the association of the gangue minerals with iron oxide in that ore. The extent to which the beneficiation can be undertaken economically depends both on the amount and the nature of the gangue. The analysis of the phases present in an orebody optimises the mining and process operations (separation, beneficiation, sintering, etc).X-ray diffraction (XRD) provides qualitative and quantitative information about the main ore phases as well as the gangue mineralogy and the amorphous content present in a sample. In addition, modern quantification methods such as Rietveld refinement allow the calculation of the distribution of elements in solid solutions such the substitution of Fe with Al in goethite or hematite.The use of high speed detectors has made XRD an important tool for grade and process control. Finger printing of XRD data can facilitate multi-dimensional mapping of ore deposits and drill cores, identifying regions of favourable mineral compositions. Grade control using XRD can be completely automated and controlled remotely.The two case studies in this paper demonstrate how XRD and finger printing can be used for grade control, process optimisation and quality control of a goethitic and a magnetitic iron ore. The enormous potential of XRD as an inexpensive, reliable tool, useful in the characterisation of iron ores will be demonstrated.CITATION:K÷nig, U, 2013. This paper presents a three-dimensional analysis of a trapezoidal-shaped segmental tunnel lining for a recent tunnelling project in Sydney. Two- dimensional analyses, hand calculations and equipment selection defined the lining geometry and loads. The analysis, which was undertaken using 3DEC (Itasca), included a complete ring of six segments bolted together to assess the impact of imperfectly built rings. Asymmetry was induced in the analysis by unfavourable positioning of segments within construction tolerances. Model output includes displacement and stress within the entire ring and normal, shear and bending moments at the joints. For the case analysed, the results suggest a 10 mm construction tolerance increases normal and shear stresses along the radial joints by approximately 25 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively and up to a doubling of the induced moments.

The minerals Industry carries out over US$ 2 billion of R&D annually. The R&D is performed at three levels ? in house research facilities; on a one-on-one basis with a research provider; as syndicated (collaborative) research. The key to a successful R&D programme is project selection. It is suggested that at this time of ?bounty? for the minerals industry the research portfolio should contain some ?blue sky? but potentially long term significantly beneficial projects. This said, the projects should align the technical concepts with the business imperatives. AMIRA has found the ?Road Map? concept has assisted in defining areas for R&D. Examples of this methodology using a Copper Road Map developed by AMIRA for the copper producers operating in South America is presented. The benefits derived from syndicated research are also discussed.

The mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation changes dramatically from west to east as the formation nears the basal contact of the Duluth Complex. This reflects a contact metamorphism that took place with the emplacement of the igneous Duluth Complex at tem¬peratures as high as 1200 °C. However, the mineralogy of the Biwabik Iron Formation also varies vertically through the stratigraphy of the unit. This variability in both the vertical and horizontal dimensions makes it difficult to predict exact horizons where specific minerals will occur. The iron-formation has been subdivided into four broad stratigraphic units (lower cherty, lower slaty, upper cherty, and upper slaty) and into four lateral mineralogical zones (1-4). Zone 1, the westernmost zone, is characterized by quartz, magnetite, hematite, carbonates, talc, chamosite, greenalite, minnesotaite, and stilpnomelane. The silicate mineralogy in Zone 2 of the Biwabik Iron Forma¬tion changes very little. However, the minerals begin to change dramatically in Zone 3. Most significantly, Zone 3 is characterized by the appearance of grunerite in both a tabular form and a fibrous form. In Zone 4, the original silicate minerals have completely reacted, and a new suite of minerals occupies the iron-formation. These include grunerite, hornblende, hedenbergite, ferrohypersthene (ferrosilite), and fayalite.

Normal practice in the mining industry is the creation of a single geological model. These models provide a single interpretation of the geological and mineralisation domains. These interpretations infer the exact behaviour of ore domain contacts at shorter scales when resource definition drilling is done on wider scales and are thus locally highly uncertain. The interpreted geological model provides a single number for the volume and tonnes of mineralised material enclosed by the mineralisation envelope. It is on this single number for volume and tonnage that capital intensive mine development decisions (mine design and scheduling, stockpile strategy, waste management, closure planning, dewatering strategy, product quality, etc) are based. Some of these decisions require knowledge of grade variability for small volumes of material such as quarterly production periods. It is generally recognised that this information cannot be derived from single kriged geological models, but can potentially be modelled by conditional simulation techniques. Uncertainty in the extent and continuity of the mineralised envelope and its effect on grade variability for shorter production periods is thus recognised as a major source of uncertainty in new mine development.CITATION:Jewbali, A, Boyle, C and Phillips, J, 2013. PlannersÆ optimism (or maybe commercial necessity) means that most mine plans use equipment rates that are rarely achieved (Lumley and Beckman, 2009). This lack of understanding of what equipment actually moves is causing erroneous equipment forecasts, leading to incorrect mine development plans and economic evaluations. Compounding this problem is a downward trend in actual equipment performance in some areas. Consequently, the presentation of realistic mine plans that are actually achieved in practice is not a common occurrence. However, rational, fact-based mine planning is available to those who want it. Hundreds of millions of cycles of data from open cut mining equipment has been collected from mines around the world since 1992. This unique and highly valuable databank is growing at an exponential rate and is being used by a number of our big miners to support rational and fact-based decision-making. However, neither the use nor the appreciation of the value of this data is universal. There is a challenge to everyone in the mining industry - how do you access value from it? The databank was drilled into and the results analysed for, the Australasian Mining and Metallurgical Operating Practices (AMMOP) publication (Lumley, in press). For this paper the analysis has been extended to include interpretation of trends for draglines, shovels, excavators and trucks. It investigates trends between coal and non-coal mines and across geographic areas. It is known that mining equipment performance in most sections of the industry is falling. This paper attempts to quantify the fall and provide explanations. The trends are analysed to extract the reasons behind the changes and most importantly, what can be done about it.CITATION:Lumley, G, 2012. The Liaoning Dahuofang Reservoir Water Transfer Project is an important development for the Department of Water Resources of Liaoning Province in northeastern China. The 85.3 km water conduit will transport water from the Hun River downstream of the Huanren Reservoir to the outlet on the Suzi River leading to the Dahuofang Reservoir. The additional water is required to sustain the growing cities of Fushun, Shen-yang, Liaoyang, Anshan, Panjin and Yingkou. The project is divided into seven contracts. Three TBM contracts comprise almost 75% of the work and the others are drill and shoot. The focus of this paper is about the creditable TBM performances achieved and some of the problems encountered by Chinese contractors; notably two having had no previous TBM experience.

Metallic magnesium is mostly used in lightweight alloys in order to decrease fuel consumption in automotive applications. Several different production processes are currently used worldwide, and the magnesium production scenario is changing rapidly, with Chinese production increasingly dominating the world market. For the purpose of this paper, a novel approach to Life Cycle Assessment was applied, in which Material Flow Accounting and energy-based methods (Embodied Energy, Exergy and Emergy Analyses) are integrated and complemented, with a detailed description of the environmental hazards associated with emissions from all the different processes.
