En ese sentido, el presente texto señala que la energía solar se convierte en una herramienta que ayuda a lixiviar minerales con poca pirita y obtener una temperatura de proceso que magnifica la recuperación del cobre en especial de la calcopirita, etc. Asimismo, la influencia cuantitativa de la temperatura en la recuperación de los sulfuros primarios, transicionales y secundarios de cobre, la velocidad de calentamiento de la pila, las temperaturas de proceso que puede alcanzarse, las pérdidas de calor en el periodo no soleado del día, el balance térmico de la pila y otros indicadores económicos de viabilidad, etc. son presentados como resultados de pruebas diversas a nivel de laboratorio e industrial.

Interest in industrial minerals in recent years has increased to such an extent that it has taken them into the mainstream of the Australian mineral industry. Notwithstanding that time series data on the values of production, exports, and imports show that industrial minerals are overshadowed by metals and energy minerals, their contribution to the national economy is important and more significant than would seem to be indicated by the statistics. Whereas the ex mine value of metals generally includes some processing (at least to a concentrate stage), most industrial minerals are valued at little more than their extraction cost, in addition to which such costs are generally low because most industrial minerals are exploited in low-cost surface operations. Consequently, values of mine production of metals and industrial minerals are not strictly comparable in that values of mine production of metals tend to be overstated Short term growth of the industrial minerals sector is assured because of several new projects already commissioned but not yet reflected in the statistics. Longer term growth is also assured, based on various other major projects that are likely to come on stream in the early to mid 1990s.

The final criterion of the payability of gold production must necessarily be the cost per ounce. While the cost per ton or per cubic yard is a convenient comparative measure, and a necessary one for operating control, it is obviously insufficient as a means of judging whether or not, in a given set of circumstances, a gold production operation can be carried out economically.. An alternative method, which brings in the ton or cubic yard as a unit of measurement, is to determine what the cost per ton or per cubic yard is equivalent to, in terms of pennyweights or grains at the ruling price of gold. But this is really only another way of stating that the cost per unit of product is the ultimate measure of profit or loss, and not the cost per unit of input material.It is accordingly of interest to determine the cost per ounce of Australian gold production and to compare it with the cost of gold production in some other parts of the world which are important gold producers. The attached Appendix, which it, is believed comprises practically all Australian mines of any consequence (except Big Bell and the de Bernales group, for which. insufficient information is available), shows this information for financial years ending between 31st December, 1938, and 31st December, 1939, the production of gold dealt with being some 1,084,000 oz., or 66% of the total Australian production for 1939. For comparative purposes the cost of producing gold at representative mines in New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, India, West Africa and Rhodesia, and the average cost of production at the Rand mines, has also been included.It is obviously necessary in a study of this sort that the basis of the cost should be clearly set out and should be as nearly as possible uniform. Pound Road Quarry is an alluvial gravel quarry owned and operated by Fulton Hogan Ltd. for the supply of aggregate in Canterbury, and is the largest quarry in the South Island in terms of production. It has evolved from three separate quarries, as a result of which extraction has occurred sporadically in a number of areas. Due to this factor, and the need to manage environmental impacts, a detailed quarry management plan was completed in 1995 which formed the basis for implementation of a certified environmental management system.   In December 1997, the quarry was the first in New Zealand to achieve ISO 14001 (TELARC) accreditation for implementation of an environmental management system. The main potential environmental impacts arising from the quarry operation include dust, noise and groundwater contamination, and visual landscape effects associated with gravel extraction, the mitigation of which is achieved by means of æbest practiceÆ methods. All quarry operations are controlled in terms of the environmental management system by means of regular (monthly and yearly) environmental reviews, appropriate auditing of environmental documents, and monitoring of environmental targets in accordance with consent and statutory requirements.

Bateman Minerals & Metals supplies the APIC Technologies which include the under-bed air-pulsed APIC jig and related technologies such as the JigScan controller and advanced mathematical models of the jig process. Bateman have developed a methodology for predicting process performance for jigs from simplified testing and modelling, based on batch equipment matched to industrial designs. Batch tests conducted on laboratory scale air-pulsed jigs can process small batches of material, such as those obtained from drill core samples. The novelty comes from using an advanced jig process model, ASTRAD, to link the results of batch and continuous jigs. The batch jig presented as a novelty in this paper has been designed to be hydraulically equivalent to the full-scale APIC Jig, allowing the generation of equivalent pulse shapes and using JigScan controller. Lump and fine ferrous ore material have been separated in this unit and any feed >1mm can be tested and extracted. The global test procedure and further modelling focus on the stratification of material, with emphasis on key aspects such as pulse shape, feed characteristics and residence time. The splitting of rejects from concentrates is itself more difficult to reproduce in batch jigging, however the ASTRAD model includes a separation imperfection module, and the APIC Technologies have extraction systems adapted to each type of material. Air pulsed batch jigs are available in several locations and are relocatable. They have been used to treat samples from Australia, South Africa and India as part of studies into ore processing using jigs. Each test layer is available for various physical testing procedures (density and chemical analyses). Test-work is performed on a case by case basis, and analysed using an advanced model ?now available over the internet. Some fundamentals of air-pulsed jigging are recapped along with some of the features of APIC jigs. The process of designing a ?hydraulically equivalent? batch jig test is then described. Some results from jigging tests are presented plus the results of the ASTRAD advanced jig model, which was first developed at the JKMRC with ferrous ores and coal and is now being supported and further developed and utilised by Bateman.

"1.0 INTRODUCTIONThe uranium industry started in Canada with the reopening of the gravity concentrator at Eldorado's Port Radium mine in the North West Territories in 1942. In 1948, uranium exploration and processing was opened to the private sector, and the Federal government offered special pricing incentives to the industry. Eldorado explored the Lake Athabaska deposits in northern Saskatchewan, and in 1953 opened the Beaverlodge mine. Other mines in the area soon followed. In 1953 also, the deposits in the Blind River - Elliot Lake area and in the Bancroft area of Ontario were discovered. Mines and mills were quickly developed in these areas.Canadian uranium production peaked at 15,900 short tons of U3O8 in 1959. In that year, uranium exports at $300,000,000 exceeded those of all other minerals in value. On October 1, 1959, Canadian uranium operations employed 13,900 people.Up to 1956, it was a seller's market. By 1958, world production of uranium was far ahead of requirements. Accordingly, in November of 1959, the USAEC announced it would not renew it's options for continued delivery of uranium from Canadian mines. This led to the ""stretchout"" of existing uranium contracts, and many mines were shut down (see Table 1) .In the early 1970's, a commercial uranium market seemed to be developing. In Ontario, at Elliot Lake and Bancroft, mines reopened. But competition was coming from the Athabaska basin of Saskatchewan. Currently it is these high grade, open pit deposits of northern Saskatchewan which are in the forefront of Canadian uranium developments. Canadian developments since 1942 reflect the political and market forces, as well as metallurgical progress and changes in environmental standards. This paper attempts to show these process changes in broad perspective."

This report describes an investigation of the technical feasibility of using a conventional commercial-size (10-ft. i.d.), rotating grate, dry-ash-removal type gas producer to make producer gas from chestnut-size bone anthracite. Test instruments were installed, and some minor changes were made in the equipment to handle the large quantities of materials expected. Extensive tests, lasting about 4 weeks, were planned, using 35 to 50 percent ash chestnut anthracite bone. However, operations were suspended after 8 days when it became apparent that to use this type of fuel satisfactorily substantial changes in equipment and operating procedures would be required. Nevertheless, enough data were obtained to indicate that gas could be produced continuously and routinely from bone coal in this type of producer whenever conditions justified the necessary development work.

"INTRODUCTIONOnce again deep-sea mining has been receiving a lot of attention in recent years. Industrial and political advancements also call for environmental baseline studies and analyses to aid the development of standards and monitoring protocols. As part of the EU research project “JPI Oceans: Ecological Aspects of Deep-Sea Mining”, the RV Sonne cruise SO242 to the Peru Basin revisited the DISCOL area that had been artificially disturbed in 1989. This offered the unique opportunity to study a deep-sea site 26 years after a disturbance similar to manganese nodule mining had been carried out (Figure 1). A comparison of a variety of undisturbed and disturbed sites shed light on the re-establishment of a geochemical equilibrium and a range of baseline values. This information can help to inform standard development for monitoring and mining purposes.Heavy metal data and its applicationResearch findingsDuring the cruise, disturbed and undisturbed surface sediment was sampled. The pore water analyses show that the 26 years old disturbance is not visible in the metal profiles and that the pore water reaches equilibrium through diffusive fluxes relatively quickly. The sediment, however, shows some differences between disturbed and undisturbed sites in the upper 20 cm, even after 26 years. Lower concentrations in the usually manganese-oxide rich top layer, variations and “unnatural” peaks in the manganese profiles, for example, suggest removal or mixing of the top layer (Figure 2)."

The Australian mining industry is a significant contributor to the nation’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, and like any industry, it must make efforts to reduce these. Medium- and long-term strategies will include the replacement of diesel engines with alternative energy sources, but what can be done in the short-term to reduce diesel consumption and hence CO2 emissions? Haul trucks are identified as the major contributors of CO2 emissions in the mining fleet and this paper focuses on firstly identifying what drives haul truck emissions and secondly, discussing what is the role of the Fleet Management System (FMS) in reducing these. A key enabler of this is having a robust fuel consumption model within the FMS, and I describe how this may be done. Besides novel approaches to incorporating fuel consumption (CO2) management into truck assignment algorithms, this paper also describes how the FMS can be used to implement and manage procedures and policies to reduce haul truck emissions.

A series of flotation experiments were carried out in a 2.25-dm3 laboratory-scale Rushton turbine cell using hydrophobic quartz particles. Flotation was performed at a constant mean bubble diameter over a range of superficial gas velocities and impeller rotational speeds. The overall flotation rate constant increased linearly with increasing superficial gas velocity (and hence bubble surface area flux). The rate constant also increased linearly with increasing energy dissipation, until a maximum value was reached. A further increase in energy dissipation had little effect on the rate constant. The dependency of the rate constant on energy dissipation is a reflection of the size range and hydrophobicity of the particles used in this study. The flotation rate constant increased with increasing particle size, except at the highest energy dissipation value examined, for which the flotation rate of the larger particles reached a plateau and, in some cases, decreased. Good agreement was obtained between the experimental results and those predicted by a fundamental flotation model using experimentally measured values for mean energy dissipation and the Sauter mean bubble diameter. The bubble velocity was adjusted to obtain the best fit to the experimental data. The inferred bubble velocity, based on the flotation model, was found to increase with increasing superficial gas velocity (and bubble surface area flux) and was found to decrease with increasing impeller rotational speed. While the inferred bubble velocities were significantly lower than experimentally measured bubble velocities, and, except at low superficial gas velocity values, significantly higher than the bubble swarm velocity calculated from gas holdup measurements, similar trends with impeller rotational speed and superficial gas velocity were observed in all cases.

"INTRODUCTIONCominco Limited, one of the free world's largest producers of lead and zinc having majority ownership in Pine Point Mines Ltd., operates a mining and concentrating complex on the south shore of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories. The mine was developed in 1963-64 and commenced operation late in 1964 with the direct shipping of high grade ore. The concentrator started production in November 1965 at a design throughput rate of 5,000 T.P.D.In 1968, the Company acquired the mining rights to a large ore body located to the east of the Pine Point claims and subsequently an expansion program at the concentrator raised the throughput rate to 8,000 T.P.D. The expansion included a third grinding circuit and additional flotation capacity. The flotation capacity took the form of a completely separate circuit from the existing flotation plant. In 1972, the zinc flotation circuits were modified to include two additional stages of cleaning. This change concluded the ""Pre-Consolidation Flotation"" circuit at Pine Point.In considering these modernization programs of the flotation section of the concentrator, the philosophy was to utilize the largest available machine having proven and modern technological changes. With the advent of the large capacity machines available in the late 1970's, it was considered a suitable time to revamp the entire flotation circuit at Pine Point in 1979. The Circuit Consolidation Project was developed to meet this requirement."

The Manhattan Mine is a sustainable development showcase. The reclamation accomplishments at this Nevada gold mine demonstrate how modern reclamation techniques can restore an old mining district into an aesthetically pleasing landscape that can support multiple and sustainable uses. In a collaborative effort that relied on substantial community involvement, Round Mountain Gold Corp.(RMGC) has improved the environment and eliminated a number of public hazards associated with old, unsafe mining features. RMGC’s community collaboration, innovative engineering, creative reclamation design and corporate commitment to environmental excellence show what Secretary Norton’s 4 Cs Initiative looks like on the ground and inaction.

An evaluation and analysis of a coal pillar bump in a West Virginia mine indicated that the pillar bump occurred because of the unique combination of controlling factors. The pillar?s development stability factor of 2.6, based on Mark-Bieniawski strength and tributary loading, would typically indicate an adequate pillar size for long-term main entries. A combination of multiple-seam mining geometry and geological conditions resulted in stress concentration leading to the coal pillar bump. No high extraction mining had been performed in the area and the overlying works appeared to have adequate stability factors. However, it was interpreted that long-term flooding had softened the overlying pillar system and rendered all but the largest pillars ineffective. Contributing factors include large overlying pillars transmitting stress through the approximately 60 ft of interburden and the failed pillar?s location at a transition in the immediate roof from shale to hard, massive sandstone. Other contributing factors include sandstone channeling forcing the development section to mine the pillar smaller than surrounding pillars in an attempt to avoid the channel, the relatively high overburden of 1,100 ft, and the pillar?s position in the bottom of a trough within the coal horizon. Pillars subjected to similar conditions on the other side of the section did not fail where the roof was composed of shale, even though the roof exhibited evidence of high stress concentration. An analysis was undertaken to determine appropriate pillar size for future mining. The conditions were evaluated by investigating mine historical conditions, assessing pillar bearing pressures, and using Lamodel 2D coupled with traditional Mark-Bieniawski pillar strength and tributary area loading stability factors to determine the stress levels for the pillar. Recommendations for future pillar sizes were based on the critical load bearing capacity identified by the analysis. To date, no further pillar bumps have occurred.

The methods used for the manufacture of carbide tipped tools are briefly outlined.INTRODUCTIONIn recent years the application of tungsten carbide to various mining tools in the mining industry, has developed to the stage where it is now regarded as an essential item in the production of coal and metal ores. In fact it is claimed that certain mining operations would not be possible if it were not for the benefits obtainable from the characteristic properties of tungsten carbide. The advantages of this hardmetal have, to some extent, influenced manufacturers to revise design specifiations of some machines, while againsome machines have actually been designed with tungsten carbide as their basic medium for operation.In general the applications fall into the following three categories:(a) Drilling hard rock by percussive means.(b) Drilling soft rock and coal by rotary means.(c) Coal cuttingThis paper is concerned with tungsten carbide tools associated with these three activities in Australia, the effectiveness of their application and significant points in their design and manufacture.

The Big Gossan mine is operated by PT Freeport Indonesia and is one of the largest stope-and-fill mining systems in the world. The Big Gossan deposit is a ~200 m wide, 1200 m long and 500 m high steeply north-east-dipping to subvertical skarn body at the Cretaceous-Tertiary Ekmai-Waripi contact. The copper-gold mineralisation, with a 1.3 per cent copper equivalent cut-off grade, occurs mainly proximal to the Ekmai-Waripi contact in the garnet-clinopyroxene prograde skarn at the base of the Tertiary Waripi formation and partly distal to the contact in the tremolite-actinolite retrograde skarn of the Tertiary Waripi formation.The Big Gossan stope mine is designed from 2540 m to 3020 m above sea level. Present active stoping operations occur at level 2540 mL to level 2640 mL and are done in a primary and secondary stoping sequence. The width and length of the stopes is 15 m and 20 m respectively, while the height of the stope varies between 20 m and 40 m, depending on the ground conditions. The stability of the stopes is visualised in the Mathew’s Stope Stability graphs. These graphs and actual Cavity Measurement Scanner measurements on the stope will predict and show the overbreak and underbreak, which affect the reconciliation of the mined stope and also the pillar stability between the primary stopes. Titanium and iron assays obtained from cores of three diamond-drill holes from the Cebolla Creek titaniferous iron deposit were evaluated by statistical techniques to obtain information concerning the mineral characteristics of the deposit and to make a preliminary determination of sampling requirements for the deposit. A range of sample volumes representing sizes from one-sixth NX core 2 feet in length through full NX core 10 feet in length were prepared by split-ting the NX core with a diamond saw and combining pulverized splits. Results indicate the existence of at least two statistical populations having different average grades of iron and titanium. Each has an assay frequency distribution that is not normal but is highly peaked (leptokurtic). Frequency distributions of assays from specific altered zones of the drill holes appear to be normally distributed. Increasing the cross-sectional area of the sample unit to change assay volume did not result in significant changes either in assay values or the resulting frequency distributions of assays. However, when assay volume is increased by increasing sample interval, the shape of the assay frequency distribution changes, and a normal distribution of assays is approached. Positive correlation exists between titanium and iron assays. The degree of correlation, although very significant, is too low to use for prediction purposes. Although the amount of data from three widely separated drill holes is not sufficient to establish an average grade for this large deposit, it indicates a range of expected assay values and provides some information for determining requirements of future sampling for evaluation purposes.

In view of their size and favorable characteristics, Shell's heavy-oil fields on the eastern coast of Lake Maracaibo, Venezuela — known as the "Bolivar Coast" — are obvious candidates for the application of thermal recovery methods. During the last decade various methods have been tested, such as steam drive,', steam soak and in-situ combustion.3 Steam soak was discovered as a promising production method rather accidentally in 1969, during early steam drive testing in the Mene Grande Tar Sands1 When steam erupted at the surface due to breakdown of the overburden, the injection wells were back-flowed to relieve the reservoir pressure. This resulted in high oil production rates, all the more impressive because the reservoir is unproducible by primary means. It was concluded that injection of limited amounts of steam might be a very effective method for stimulation of heavy-oil wells. To obtain information that would be more widely applicable, testing of the process was continued in the eastern part of the Tia Juana field (Fig. 1). Here even more favorable results were obtained than in Mene Grande. This created sufficient confidence to prompt a large-scale project, which was considered essential for an adequate evaluation of ultimate recovery, steam requirements, mechanical problems and economic prospects. To obtain an early answer on the ultimate recovery a fairly depleted area was selected in the western part of the same field ("A" in Fig. 1). The first steam was injected in March, 1964. This paper describes the performance until the end of 1966. The production mechanism and well inflow performance are discussed in some detail. In view of the favorable results obtained so far, steam soak operations have expanded considerably since the start of this project. Presently, five other projects are under way, of which two are about the same size as the one under discussion, with further extensions being programmed. Description of the Project Reservoir Data Shell's part of the Main Tia Juana reservoir has a proven area of 8,800 acres and an average net oil sand thickness of 130 ft. It contained an initial quantity of 2,750 million bbl of stock tank oil (STOIIP), with an API gravity ranging from 10 to 15 API and a viscosity of 100 to 10,000 cp (at 122F). As a geological unit it is known locally as the Lower Lagun-illas member of the Lagunillas formation, which is early Miocene in age. The sand bodies are believed to be distributary channel sands deposited in a lower coastal plain. Most of the channel sands have lateral and some vertical communication. The field was developed mainly in the period from 1936 to 1950. The ultimate primary recovery is estimated at 18.1 percent of STOIIP, of which 12.5 percent STOIIP had been produced by the end of 1963 from some 540 wells. I. Introduction. THE object of this paper is to present a concise statement on the genesis of the copper- and lead-deposits of the Bingham Mining District, Utah. It is essentially a condensation of a chapter in a detailed report on this district, together with so much on geologic features, and on the character and occurrence of the ores as bears on the problems of ore-deposition. The studies upon which the paper is based were undertaken in 1900 under the direction of S. F. Emmons, Geologist-in-Charge of the Section of Metalliferous Deposits, U. S. Geological Survey; and a little additional data was secured in subsequent years. The evidence then obtained as to the genesis of the replacement copper-ores has led, to conclusions which differ somewhat from explanations hitherto current. Accordingly, it seems desirable briefly to present the facts together with the resulting conclusions in a separate paper.

"This paper presents the challenges associated with the design and construction of a steel sheet pile cofferdam supported with one level of grouted anchors in clean to silty sand with gravel. The initial assessment of the subsurface conditions indicated loose to medium dense soil with intermittent dense to very dense layers with no occurrence of cobbles and boulders. Sheet piles were proposed to be installed to a depth of 24 m below the ground surface to limit dewatering requirements for the cofferdam. During sheet pile installation, refusal of piles occurred at multiple locations forming passages for increased flow into the cofferdam. Modifications were made in the design of the dewatering system as a result of the increased flow. Finite element modeling was used to select the necessary modifications to the dewatering system within the cofferdam. Wells were installed based on the findings of the numerical model. Model simulations showed good comparison with monitoring of the field installed dewatering system.INTRODUCTIONIt is necessary to consider the impact of the ground water, subsurface stratigraphy, strength, and drainage behavior of the soil for the design and construction of cofferdams. This paper presents a case history of the construction of a cofferdam in Northern Ontario, Canada. The project consists of the construction of a powerhouse, intake, and tailrace which will generate around 28 MW of renewable clean energy by diverting water from New Post Creek through a power house and discharge into the Abitibi River. The focus of this paper is the dewatering and excavation support required to permit construction of the powerhouse. The layout of the cofferdam is shown in Fig. 1. The cofferdam for the powerhouse is rectangular in shape with sheet piles on all four sides intended to be driven to the design toe El. 101 m. The east and west walls have a length of 46.3 m. North and south sides are 47.6 m long; and in addition, two cantilever sheet pile walls bound the tailrace on the west side and two cantilever walls were installed on the east for construction of the penstock inlet. The ground surface in the powerhouse cofferdam area, before commencement of sheet pile driving, was brought to El. 125; the ground then slopes up to the East, toward New Post Creek, and the site is bounded on the West by the Abitibi River. 186 pairs of sheet piles were used to create the cofferdam and cantilever walls. The deepest excavation is to elevation 114.4 m. Within the west half of the cofferdam footprint, the base of excavation slopes upward at 3H: 1V to facilitate the tailrace discharge into Abitibi River.SOIL STRATIGRAPHYThe cofferdam design was based on the geotechnical investigation conducted by AECOM (2014) which included two relevant boreholes near the powerhouse footprint. The ground elevation at the time of investigation varied between 131 to 129 m. The material observed to the full depth of investigation was comprised generally of coarse to fine sand and gravelly sand or a sand matrix with gravelly inclusions. Some intermittent layers of clay and silt intrusions were also observed. Generally the soils grade finer away from the river. SPT N60 values were recorded in two borings during the field investigation with values reported from 3 to 92. The in-situ conditions ranged from compact to dense with some loose and some very dense zones. Figure 2 shows the variation in SPT N60 values with elevation."

During the last 28 years, I have had the very challenging and rewarding experience of working as an engineering professional in a large multinational company, both as a manager of engineers and engineering projects as well as an inventor and generator of new engineering processes and products. Due to the diversified geographic and tech¬nical nature of my employer's business, my responsibilities have taken me all over the world. This has included interactions with people in different industries including minerals, coal, chemicals, petroleum, pulp and paper, agriculture and pharmaceuticals. As diverse as my experience may seem, it has always amazed me how common the basic underlying technology and economic trends are that shape the working environment that any given engineer in any given geographic loca¬tion will experience. I would like to discuss the industrial evolution from micro to macro engineering. One of the basic truths behind how industry must and will operate is "change," including: • the creation of conditions for change, • the anticipation of change, • the resistance to change, • the rewards that being part of a change can bring and • the destruction that change can bring to the unprepared. This fact was well stated by Heractitus around 500 BC.: "There is nothing permanent except change." This simple truth has been valid since the dawn of time and, if anything, is accelerating in nature every decade.
