Records show that much of the lead produced in the Upper Mississippi Valley lead-zinc field was taken from natural openings along crevice systems at shallow horizons or at the surface. During the early history of the district, the shallow deposits were worked intensively; but in recent years the production of lead, except as a byproduct of deeper mining for zinc ores, has not been significant. Considering the methods of early mining, the character of mineralization, and the fact that galena can still be found on the surface of the old digging areas, it was reasoned that enough mineralization might remain on and above bedrock to permit, through the use of modern equipment and methods, economical re-treatment of surface material in the digging areas.

It is the purpose of this paper to produce some evidence on the accuracy to be expected from normal assay procedure using the usual first class equipment, and to examine the effect that many assaying inaccuracies have on reported metallurgical recoveries.Generally speaking, the evaluation of the gold content of a mineral ore sample by the fire assay method is a relatively simple process.A weighed quantity of finely ground ore is fused with suitable fiuxes including litharge and a reducing agent to give a button of lead and a quantity of slag. The shower of lead produced by the reduction of the added litharge collects the gold and silver present in the ore, concentrating the values into the lead button.The button of lead, after separation from the slag, is, on heating in an absorbent cupel in a current of air, reoxidised to litharge and absorbed into the cupel leaving a gold and silver bead in the cupel. This bead' is heated in a solution of nitric acid to dissolve the silver, leaving the gold undissolved to be dried and weighed. Knowing the original weight of the ore and the weight of the gold prill the value of the ore is easily calculated.Summarising1. Fusion Process.-Ore plus fiuxes give a slag plus lead button.2. The mining industry has searched for a message that will resonate with the public while focusing on the industry’s positive contributions to society. So far, environmental groups remain unconvinced and the public is still largely uninformed. In the authors’ opinion, a number of recent events and experiences have converged to help shape a more effective public communication on mining’s important role. This article presents a perspective on coal’s role in sustaining society by anchoring the message in a transparent way, including a material flow analysis, that links coal’s impacts across a range of social and environmental aspects. Past and continuing image problems In her 1994 paper, Nancy Bingham, with Caterpillar, outlined what the public thought about mining. Based on extensive interviews, the following results were found: • The public believed mining harms the environment. • The public believed mining harms people in nearby communities. • The public believed mining exploits workers. • The public believed mining has little personal benefit to the individual.

Following on from many years of research aimed at improving the effectiveness of truck haulage operations in mines operated by BHP Minerals, BHP Research developed a concept for an Innovative Large Mining Truck, (ILMT) which has the potential to significantly improve the cost effectiveness of rear dump mining trucks. The ILMT concept reduces the empty vehicle weight dramatically, greatly reduces unequal rear tyre loading and improves ride and handling characteristics. The concept has been taken to the "proof of concept" prototype truck stage with the cooperative efforts of BHP Coal, BHP Research. Liebherr Mining Truck, Inc., Liebherr-Australia and Birrana Engineering. Testing of the prototype truck commenced at a coal mine in Queensland, Australia during May, 1996. Preliminary results from the testing program are very encouraging. Expectations are being met and in some cases exceeded.

Apatite Fission Track Analysis (AFTA) is a thermal history reconstruction tool that enables determination of magnitude and timing of maximum paleotemperature and paleo-geothermal gradient at the time of maximum paleotemperatures. From this information, the amount of section missing at major unconfornities can be estimated and incorporated into basin models. The Gippsland Basin has a number of distinct problems that can be tackled using AFTA. 1. The nature of the regional break between the Late Cretaceous-Tertiary Latrobe Group and the underlying Early Cretaceous Strzelecki Group. 2. The tectonic history of the basement flanking the basin and its effect on sediment composition. 3. The age of igneous activity in the basin, as typified by the widespread basaltic plugs and dykes intruding the outcropping Strzelecki Group. Major uplift and erosion within, and adjacent to, the early Cretaceous rift basin in the Mid-Cretaceous, at -95 to 100 Ma, initially constrained the Latrobe Group depositional area to the central deep of the Gippsland Basin and provided an elevated source of quartz-rich detritus for the Latrobe Group reservoirs. This is in marked contrast to the preceding period in the early Cretaceous when contemporaneous volcanism dominated as a source of detritus, producing quartz-poor lithic sandstones, in which a host of attendant diagenetic reactions destroyed their reservoir potential. Initial uplift and erosion of the volcanogenic Strzelecki Group also occurred in the mid-Cretaceous as revealed by a number of distinct inversion structures, and erosion of this material will have locally provided very poor quality sand to the basal Latrobe Group.

Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, Namakwa Sands, ilmenite, DC arc furnace, titania slag, pig iron Namakwa Sands is a heavy minerals mining and beneficiation business in the Anglo Base Metals Division, and operates along the West Coast of South Africa. The business encompasses mining, mineral concentration, separation, and smelting operations. The smelting process comprises the carbonaceous reduction of ilmenite to produce titania slag with a TiO2 content of 86%, and iron with a carbon content of 2.5%. The Namakwa Sands smelter, situated near the Saldanha Bay harbour, commenced smelting operations in 1994, when a 25 MW DC arc furnace was commissioned. The smelting operations were expanded in 1999, with the commissioning of a second 35 MW DC arc furnace. Despite the fact that ilmenite smelting poses a technical challenge in terms of the high temperatures required, the physical characteristics of the slag, the constraints placed on the feedstock, and the tight product specifications, Namakwa Sands has continually increased slag production since 1995. High furnace feed-on utilisation and furnace stability, complemented by continuous improvement drives, will be the vehicle to drive performance in the short term, with longer-term performance enhancements due to strategic process development.

ANY analysis of the aluminum situation, particularly of the factors involved in the current shortage of the metal, must consider the rapid march of events since the Munich fiasco of September 1938. At the end of 1938, the sole domestic producer of aluminum had more than a year's supply of metal on hand, having added 50,500 tons of output to stocks during the year. Not until war had been declared between the United Kingdom and Germany in September 1939 did the United States begin to make serious preparations for defense and a limited national emergency was proclaimed. Congress reflecting popular opinion, was not disposed to spend huge sums for armaments in 1939, and although 31,413 tons of aluminum was withdrawn from stocks. 107,500 tons was still on hand at the end of the year. When the President initiated a 50,000-airplane program in May 1940 the country was astounded, as previous Congressional authorizations of approximately 6000 planes for the Army by July 1911 and 3000 for the Navy by 1914 had been considered adequate.

The mining industry to the lay mind is one which appears peculiarly dangerous, partly because the accidents which take place are usually of a very tragic nature, and partly because other, industries claim victims more from disease than fromviolence, and their fatal nature is not advertised to the same degree so that in spite of this idea of unusual risk, it is a fact that mining will compare favourably, as regards vital statistics, with nearly all other trades requiring special training.Neverthelessthere are a larger number offatal and serious accidents occurring year by year than one would like to see, and could the deaths which take place by accident be eliminated, it is safe to say that mining would become one of the most healthy of all species of skilled labour. If we examine the accidents appearing yearly in the reports of the Mining Departments of the various colonies, it will be at once admitted that many of them need riot, and in many cases ought not to, have occurred.It is, therefore, the object of tbis essay, to pass under review the ordinary precautions which should be adopted to minimise, as far as possible, the dangerous factors whereby fatalities are brought about.

The planning and operation of ventilation network systems for uranium mines require special considerations since ventilation is the primary technique of controlling ambient concentrations of radon progeny. The major environmental challenge facing the ventilation engineer is the requirement to dilute radon progeny to below the Working Level Month per year of worker exposure required by law. The application of large airflow volumes and the utilization of low residence times constitute some of the factors considered by the design engineer. Good mine planning and sequencing are also critical for protecting the health of miners. The mine ventilation must have such characteristics as flexibility, high air distribution efficiency, rapid air transit times, zero recirculation and no short-circuiting. A well established maintenance program for all ventilation appliances must be in place to guarantee control of the distribution system. Real-time monitoring systems permit assurance the adequate quality of air is delivered to working places. A case study for an operating mine is used to demonstrate how the ventilation system is successfully managed and operated using the above concepts.

Laboratory data for 155 field muds and 77 .shales have been used to develop correlations to estimate the net streaming potential component of the SP. Analysis of these data and comparison with field tests show that streaming potential corrections must be made to obtain an accurate estimate of the electrochemical potential for use in the determinntion of formation water resi-iiviy. The self-potential curve is related to formation water resistivity, and considerable effort within the oil industry has been directed toward clarifying this relationship. The Schlumbergers and Leonardon1,2 recognized that two types of potentials, electrochemical and electro-kinetic, resulted in the net potential variation in the borehole. Most of the later papers have dealt with the electrochemical component and its controlling parameters. The investigations of Wyllie,2" Salisch' and Moore5 provide the most extensive sources of data on streaming potentials across mud cakes. These authors observed streaming potentials of sufficient magnitude to be of critical importance in SP interpretation, if it is assumed that streaming potentials develop only opposite permeable beds. Streaming potentials across shales have been reported by Schenck and by Gondouin, et al.7 Since SP magnitude is the difference in potential opposite shale and sand beds, these authors suggested that the net streaming potential component may be negligible. The present investigation was initiated to evaluate empirically some of the parameters controlling the magnitude of the net borehole streaming potential and to determine whether useful relations between mud properties and net streaming potential could be established. Field muds were used in this investigation. These muds were characterized by the amount and type of chemical treatment utilized for five days before Sampling. Filter loss, mud resistivity, mud density and filtrate resistivity were determined for each mud with conventional methods and apparatus. Mud filtrate pH was estimated with Hydrion pH paper for the appropriate range. Streaming PotentIals Across MuD Cakes Commercial calomel-saturated KC1 electrodes are subject to potential changes attributed to contamination of the very small fiber-tip bridge by particles of clay from the drilling mud.3 To minimize this difficulty, a large diameter bridge (Fig. 1) was constructed with saturated KC1-agar gel and a filter disc of microporous porcelain. INTRODUCTION The level of analysis for the selection of extraction practices and equipment for surface mining differs significantly from that found in underground mining. In underground mines, manufacturers establish the operating ranges of the equipment, such as continuous miners, loaders, and boring machines, based upon required clearances. Even in conventional mining, the drilling and blasting operation is usually based upon experience. The selection of extraction methods and equipment for surface mining is more complex. Since the equipment is not as confined as in deep mining, and the topography tends to be highly variable over the limits of the mining property, primary extraction equipment must be sized according to reach and capacity. Further, due to the depositional characteristics of the over- burden, drilling and blasting patterns must be well- designed to provide proper fragmentation. The following sections provide a general outline for the selection of surface excavation practices and equipment. The topics covered include drilling and blasting and the selection of both primary extraction equipment (draglines and stripping shovels) and secondary extraction equipment (bulldozers, scrapers, and front-end loaders). EXCAVATION FUNDAMENTALS Before discussing surface excavation, a few concepts need to be defined. A bank cubic yard of material is equal to one cubic yard as it lies in its natural or undisturbed state. A loose cubic yard is that portion of a bank yard that after being disturbed has expanded to measure one cubic yard. Swell is the volume increase of a material when it is removed from the natural state. Finally, load factor is the percentage decrease in the density of a material from its natural state to a loose state. Table 1 summarizes these concepts for various materials. When the amount of overburden to be removed to meet a predetermined production rate is established, a suitable bucket size for the primary stripping equipment must be calculated. The following equation can be used: NBSIZE = TBC/[(OF) (BF)] (1) where NBSIZE is the actual bucket capacity after considering the swell percentage, the bucket fill factor, and the operating efficiency; TBC is the theoretical bucket capacity (TBC = COB/NTCPM); OF is the operating efficiency; BF is the bucket fill factor; COB is the cubic yards of overburden to be removed; NTCPM is the number of theoretical cycles per month [NTCPM = (SMH) (3600)/(CT)]; SMH is the scheduled monthly hours; and CT is the cycle time in seconds. FRAGMENTATION PROCEDURES Drilling Where the strength of overburden material is such that blasting is required prior to excavation, drilling is conducted before using explosives. Two methods of drilling are found in mining-percussion and rotary. Penetration of overburden by percussion drilling is carried out by successive impacts of the bit into the rock. Emphasis in this section will be placed on rotary drilling, because for surface mining it is the most versatile form of overburden penetration. Rotary drilling is conducted by rotating a rigid string of tubular rods to which a rock-cutting bit is attached. The drilling energy is supplied by rotation as well as thrust and the cutting action consists of abrasion, scraping, spalling, or chipping. The size range for rotary-drilled blastholes is from 4 in. to 15 in., with 9 in. and 12 in. being common sizes. There are two types of bits used for rotary drilling-drag and rolling cutter. Drag bits are applicable in soft to medium-soft shales or their equivalents. Since their effectiveness is dependent upon a successful scraping action, drilling thrust is lower for drag bits than for rolling cutter bits; the opposite is true for torque requirements. The bits are usually fitted with replace- able tungsten-carbide cutters. Rolling cutter bits, though available in a two-cone configuration, are usually of the three-cone style (Table 2). The rolling cones have either large steel teeth for drilling through soft formations or small tungsten-car- bide inserts for drilling through hard formations. Table 3 relates bit size and weight to the strength of the rock. The major advantage of rotary drilling is its rapid drilling rate. This is due to the fact that, unlike percussion drilling, rock penetration is uniform with depth. Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

The multi-gravity separator (MGS) is a novel piece of equipment for the separation of fine and ultra-fine minerals. However, the published literature does not demonstrate its use in the separation of coal fines. Therefore, an attempt was made to study the effects of different process variables on the performance of an MGS for the beneficiation of coal fines. The results obtained from this study revealed that among the parameters studied, drum rotation and feed solids concentration play dominating roles in controlling the yield and ash content of the clean coal. Mathematical modeling equations that correlate the variables studied and the yield and ash contents of the clean coal were developed to predict the performance of an MGS under different operating and design conditions. The entire exercise revealed that the MGS could produce a clean coal with an ash content of 14.67% and a yield of 71.23% from a feed coal having an ash content of 24.61%.

In previous papers (1, 2), the influence on the creep resistance of elements normally found in commercial lead has been recorded. The results in the present paper refer to the influence of calcium, an element which is not found naturally in lead, but which has been used commercially in the form of alloys. It was realised that calcium would act as a deoxidising agent for lead-and in fact it was with this feature in view that both calcium and magnesium were used as additions. Subsequent work (including the results given in the present paper) has tended to diminish the importance which at first seemed to be associated with the presence of oxygen in lead. The structure of the dilute calcium lead alloys has been worked out in detail (S) and the phase diagram shows the existence of limited solid solubility and a compound CaPbs.

"The large Yandi channel iron deposit (CID) is located in the north-west of Western Australia and is currently mined via open pit methods. Drilling at Yandi is widely spaced and current estimates are mostly linear averages of the surrounding local samples. Linear estimates such as ordinary kriging (OK) based on block sizes that are significantly smaller than the dimensions of the drilling grid are less variable than the unknown reality (Armstrong and Champigny, 1989).Conditional simulation (CS) provides a series of plausible realisations that represent the actual grade variability at a small scale (eg 1 m + 1 m + 1 m). These simulations are very useful for a number of purposes, eg: optimising grade control, stockpiling and blending selection of optimal drill hole spacing assessing resource risk on contained tonnage and metal.At Yandi the major constituents of the ore (Fe, P2O5, SiO2, Al2O3 and LOI) are correlated to varying degrees. Independent CS of each assay variable will not reproduce these correlations. Reproducing the correlations (and the shape of scatterplots) is important if the simulations are used for the abovementioned purposes. This paper examines and compares various methods of CS that aim to reproduce the correlations between the assay variables.The CS methods evaluated in this paper are conditional co-simulation (CCS) using the linear model of co-regionalisation and two other, alternative multivariate simulation methods, which use min/max autocorrelation factors (MAF) or the stepwise conditional transform (SCT) to de-correlate assay variables before performing independent CS. It was found that CCS best reproduced the characteristics (histograms, variogram, scatterplots, etc) of the declustered drill hole data (Figure 1). Whilst simulation using MAF generally produced acceptable results, the method did not adequately reproduce the variance of the assay variables. The univariate statistics, histograms and experimental variograms were acceptable for simulations generated from the SCT. Bivariate statistics, cross-variograms and scatterplot reproduction for the SCT were unacceptable. The latter method produced inferior results because there were insufficient samples to obtain a reliable transform of the third assay variable in the transformation sequence.None of the abovementioned simulation methods provides good reproduction of all the scatterplots. This is due to the presence of clay pods, which cause some scatterplots to display two trends. These clay pods contain higher percentages of SiO2 and Al2O3 than the surrounding CID. The clay pods are generally smaller than the drill-grid dimensions. Thus their locations are typically unknown and they cannot be defined by manual interpretation, eg via wireframes. The locations of the clay pods were simulated via indicator CS. CCS was then performed separately for the clay pods and the CID. This significantly improved the reproduction of the correlation coefficients, the scatterplots and visually the simulation was more geologically realistic. Simulating the location of clay pods followed by CCS of assay variables is the recommended approach for simulation at the Yandi CID.CITATION:De-Vitry, C, 2013.
