"Gravity concentration remains the main separation method for fine iron ore and is used extensively for treating various minerals. Gravity concentration methods separate minerals of different specific gravity by their relative movement in response to gravity and one or more other forces, the latter often being the resistance to motion offered by a viscous fluid, such as water or air (Wills, 2006).Spirals concentrators are one of the gravity concentration equipment used for beneficiation of minerals. Spirals are typically used for processing of fine minerals (-1mm) size fraction. The main operating variables for a spiral concentrator are the feed rate, the solids concentration, the wash water addition and the position of the cutters or splitters used to separate the tailings, middling and concentrate streams (Sadeghi, Bazin & Renaud, 2014).The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of feed rate, solids concentration and wash water on grade and recovery on iron ore material. The Multotec SC20HC/7 WW spiral was used for the experimental test work. The spiral was tested at varying solids concentration and feed rate. The wash water rate was also varied to establish the best washing rate. The splitter positions were kept constant. Optimization of these variables is expected to provide optimum conditions for a good compromise between grade and recovery.INTRODUCTIONSpiral concentrators are simple low energy consuming devices that separate minerals mainly on the basis of density. Spirals are widely used in mineral processing as a method for preconcentration and have proven to be metallurgically efficient and cost effective.Spirals have a wide application, they are used in iron ore processing, coal, gold, chromites, mineral sands, glass sands, and in soil cleaning.Separation on a spiral is achieved through a combination of forces that act on particles as they move down the trough of the spiral. The main forces known to act on the particle on a spiral are the gravitational forces, centrifugal force, hydrodynamic drag, and lift and friction forces (Kapur & Meloy, 1998). Apart from the forces acting on a spiral, the properties of the slurry flowing on a spiral including, solids concentration, feed rate and wash water also plays an important role in the separation on the spiral.The relationship between separation efficiency and feed rate was shown to be linear, with a decrease in efficiency at higher flow rates. Previous work on flow profile by Holland - Batt (1990) indicated that any increase in the feed rate to a spiral results in a greater part of the additional flow volume reporting to the outside of the trough. The flow on the outside of the trough becomes energized and consequence to that the heavy particles find it hard to settle and escape this region to the inner region. This effect has a high impact on recovery of heavy minerals, since any increase in volumetric flow on the spiral is not made available for recovery in the inner region of the spiral."

M-30, Madrid’s inner ring, covers 42 sq km of the city centre where one million people reside. It was constructed in several phases during the sixties and the eighties. The design criteria applied to those phases were different and were not always homogeneous with urban roads with lighting regulation as well as speedways. These areas had a heavy concentration of access and exits and there had been made many changes on the number of traffic lanes which has caused heavy traffic congestions and high accident rates. The environmental impact and noise pollution in residential areas are also consequences of M-30. The Madrid Major took a decision at the beginning of the present legislation, based on socio economic and environmental evaluation; rebuild the M-30 with the following sustainable mobility principles: Underground transfer of a considerable portion of the main ring and some of its links replacing some parts of the surface with new green areas in order to reduce the environmental impact. Increase the traffic capacity, improving the traffic continuity and fluidity and eliminating the lighting regulation areas, which is one of the main congestion problems currently. Increase the traffic safety with clear signalling information panels and avoiding difficult maneuvering. Redesign the links with the high capacity radial highways and other connecting lanes of the city. The project is worth 3.7 billion Euros. In 2007, when the construction is completed, it is expected will save 14 million of journey hours that represent 4.5 million Euros saved in fuel consumption per annum, There will be a very significant reduction of 35,000 tons of CO2 in terms of pollution and 400 less car accidents. Those values will increase even more in the following years. The areas beside Manzanares River, running parallel to the M-30 on the western side of Madrid, will be highly enhanced. Better water quality and the recovering of the green areas existing in old times will also return for the citizen’s enjoyment. TUNNEL CROSS SECTION OF CALLE 30 SOUTH BY PASS One of the major challenges of the new Calle 30 is actually not only the related to the main road but also to the link with the A-3, with highway to Valencia. This link is currently the most congested area and has one of the highest traffic densities of Spanish roads, with more than 250,000 vehicles/day. The remodelling of this area is the principle objective of the South by-pass. The tunnel is the only answer for this by-pass as the road alignment will go among buildings. The wetting characteristics and water film stability at the talc surface have been studied, particularly the effect of polysaccharides such as guar gum, starch, and dextrin. Talc is a gangue mineral in the flotation of base metal sulfide ores, precious metal sulfide ores, and platinum group metal (PGM) sulfide ores. Talc surfaces were investigated using surface analysis techniques including atomic force microscopy, high-speed video bubble attachment measurements, and wetting film stability measurements using a synchronized tri-wavelength reflection interferometry microscope (STRIM). In the presence of polysaccharides, there is a significant increase in bubble attachment time at the talc surface, but only a slight change in contact angle, which suggests that polysaccharide depression of talc is due primarily to the slow rate of bubble attachment and not due to a change in contact angle. The critical rupture thickness (hc) for a hydrophobic talc surface was found to be 56 nm, while the hydrophilic phlogopite surface of similar structure has an equilibrium film thickness (he) of 25 nm. At low polysaccharide concentrations, the wetting films formed on the talc surfaces were unstable, but at high concentrations the wetting films became stable with similar thickness values as the critical rupture thickness, and bubble attachment did not occur. However, it was found that the critical and equilibrium film thickness values do not change significantly with the polysaccharide type or concentration. The results from this research help us understand further details of film rupture and displacement during bubble attachment.

Following a successful investigation on the Central Zone sample, a cyanidation study was conducted on an ore sample from the AD-MW Zone of Clarence Stream Property, owned by Freewest Resources Canada, to develop a leaching strategy to extract gold. At a grade of 6.48 g/t, gold is present in the forms of aurostibite, free gold and electrum. The ore contains 4.3% berthierite/gudmundite, 1.3% pyrrhotite, 0.7% pyrite, 0.07% stibnite and 0.9% arsenopyrite. Similar to the Central Zone, the extraction of gold from the AD-MW Zone can be performed at atmospheric pressure, pH 10.5 and with a low concentration of cyanide. The grind size had no effect on gold extraction between a P80 of 28 to 71 µm. The oxygen and cyanide requirement significantly increased with a ?ner grind. Consequently, a very close control of cyanide addition is required to minimize passivation of gold. Lead nitrate, added in the pretreatment, increased the extraction of gold by 2.3%. Leaching at pH < 10 improved gold extraction but increased the cyanide consumption by 5%. Passivation of gold occurred when the pretreatment was longer than 2 hours. A longer pretreatment reduced the cyanide consumption by 5%. Mineralogical characterization of the leach residue with no gravity pretreatment prior to leaching indicated the presence of unleached gold grains and passivated gold grains. Removal of coarse gold by gravity increased the extraction by 2.8% (leach residue at 0.74 g/t Au). Increasing the DO to 16 ppm or the lead nitrate from 500 to 1,000 g/t increased the overall gold extraction to 90.4% (leach residue at 0.62 g/t), which is the maximum gold extraction obtained. The leaching parameters were 800 ppm NaCN, DO 16 ppm and pH 10.5 for a duration of 120 hours. The associated cyanide consumption was 4.0 kg/t. Gold leaching was not sensitive to cyanide concentration. Reducing the cyanide concentration to 250 ppm resulted in a gold extraction of 89.5% with a cyanide consumption of 2.6 kg/t.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that re-entering a sealed heating poses a significant hazard, whereby the original heating is rejuvenated at an accelerated rate forcing withdrawal and re-sealing of the area. Bulk-scale laboratory experiments using a two-metre column confirm these mine site observations. A high volatile bituminous coal from New South Wales, Australia was allowed to develop a significant hot spot before being inerted with nitrogen and allowed to cool. Air was then allowed back into the coal after the nitrogen was turned off and a hot spot developed almost immediately at the same location as the original hot spot before it quickly migrated towards the air source within a day. Two more re-entries were simulated. Each successive re-entry developed a broader hot spot and took longer to reach thermal runaway. These results clearly show the behaviour that can be expected when trying to recover a section of an underground coal mine that has been sealed due to a spontaneous combustion event.

"Abstract The lateral earth pressure of vertical circular shaft is investigated by using experimental tests and a theoretical analysis. The emphasis was quantifying on the magnitude and distribution of a lateral earth pressure measured by three-dimensional arching effect. A framework for determining the earth pressure distribution on the basis of both centrifuge model and full-scale field test results is introduced. Through these studies, it is found that the lateral earth pressure decreases within active displacement (dh/H: 0.2×10-2, dh: horizontal displacement, H: Height of vertical shaft) of wall at deep excavation and the arching effect is more significant for deep excavation than for shallow excavation. It is also found that the lateral earth pressure acting on a vertical circular shaft considering arching effect is 70% smaller than that calculated by Rankine theory, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of realistic earth pressure for vertical circular shaft subjected to arching pressure.INTRODUCTIONIn South Korea, an increasing need for underground excavation and the application of the vertical circular wall (i.e. vertical shaft) is becoming an important issue in engineering practice. Here the vertical circular wall is generally embedded in soft or hard rocks through weathered soil varying thicknesses ranging up to 15 m. Since 1980, a number of huge excavation projects such as underground space for constructing power stations, subways, high-speed railways, and many lifeline constructions have been performed in urban areas (Jeong and Seo, 2004). Although there have been considerable advancements in construction techniques involving vertical circular wall, it is still very important for tunnel engineers to control the lateral earth pressure. Additionally, Proper estimation of earth pressures is a key factor in design of vertical circular wall. Because of three dimensional arching effects, i.e. convex arching and/or inverted arching, the earth pressure acting on a circular type of wall is less than other types. Thus, the vertical circular wall is generally used."

"INTRODUCTION The relative value of the various individual physical and chemical properties of coke as a measure of its performance in the blast furnace as aroused considerable controversy but it is generally agreed that uniformity in these properties is extremely important if maximum mum pip-iron production is to be attained. The control of,the bulk density or weight per cubic feet of the coal charge in the coke ovens is a major, and frequently overlooked, factor in producing a uniform product and in efficient operation of the coke plant.This report presents a brief discussion of the general problem of bulk-density control and the results of tests on samples of coke-oven charges from several operating plants experiencing difficulties due to lack of adequate control. These tests covered the effect of moisture and oil content on the bulk density of the coal. Some tests on the effect of a wetting agent and furnenous of gained were also made. A description of the methods used to determine the bulk density of the coals studied in this investigation and of the methods used to apply oil to the coal at byproduct-coke plants are included in this product. No theoretical analysis of the data presented in this report, because the primary purpose of the investigation was to obtain data of immediate practical value to the plants concerned."

Mould powders play an important role in the stability of the continuous casting process. The main functions of mould powders are to provide sufficient lubrication and to control the horizontal heat transfer. Because process control of thin slab casting is more stringent, it is generally assumed that mould powder properties become more critical as well. In 2000, the Direct Sheet Plant at Corus IJmuiden (DSP) was commissioned, incorporating a thin slab caster designed for casting speeds up to 6 m/min. During commissioning, several operational problems with mould powders were encountered i.e. insufficient liquid pool depth and the formation of rims/lumps. To investigate the operational mould powder problems, some of the mould powders were characterized using physical and mineralogical methods. The results were linked to operational experiences. It was concluded that for thin slab casting, a stable slag formation is obtained with a proper choice of free carbon and an even distribution of the carbon particles within the granules. The physical properties of mould powders are not as critical as expected when the additional mineralogical requirements are taken into account. BM37 is a bonanza-grade (&gt;30 ppm Au) ore shoot of the Maria Lode of the Karangahake adularia-sericite epithermal deposit in the southern Hauraki Goldfield. Samples from BM37 contain up to weight percent gold. The ore shoot is a vein that pinches and swells, but is typically tens of cm thick, and locally exceeds 0.5 m in true width. Gold occurs as irregular anhedral electrum grains that range up to 300 microns across and contain 38 to 59 wt&nbsp;per cent&nbsp;Au (ave. 52 wt per cent&nbsp;Au). Electrum occurs in sulphide-rich bands in association with pyrite, chalcopyrite, acanthite, galena, sphalerite, and local covellite. Lower grade samples contain local to rare mckinstryite [(Ag, Cu) 2S] and polybasite [(Ag, Cu) 16 (As, Sb) 2S11]. Pyrite from BM37 is nearly stoichiometric; it lacks the As that commonly occurs at up to percent levels in pyrite from other veins in the goldfield. Acanthite also contains low quantities of trace metals, and typically has less than 2.5 per cent&nbsp;Se. The vein shows complex textures. Bonanza grade sulphide-rich ginguro bands form discrete layers adjacent to the vein margins, and occur as breccia fragments encased by later massive to comb quartz with local quartz after platy calcite. Both the breccia fragments and ginguro bands are cross-cut by later quartz veins. Textures thus indicate that formation of the high-grade portions of BM37 resulted from one or more discrete events that differed markedly from the events that formed the bulk of the vein.

In June 2012, Lucara Diamond Corporation officially commissioned its Karowe Diamond Mine in Letlhakane, Botswana. The processing plant circuit incorporates variable speed autogeneous milling, a first for African diamond processing - only previously practiced in Russia. The paper discusses the basis for the selection of milling against the more traditional circuits incorporating crushing and scrubbing. It covers early commissioning challenges of operating a mill in an æalien environmentÆ with no immediate reference plant to look up to for bench-marking.The paper describes how these challenges were overcome and learnings quickly incorporated into the mill operating philosophy for maximum diamond liberation and minimum product damage. The plant was commissioned in three months and by August 2012 the production ramp up had reached name-plate capacity. The feed to the mill has varied from highly weathered material to extremely hard kimberlite and the operating philosophy had to be optimised for the full range of ore types. While more work is required to stretch the mill operating envelope coupled with other circuit additions to improve liberation of fine diamonds at minimum capital expenditure, the mill has, to date, performed to its billing.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, Ndlovu, G N and Sikwa, N A, 2013. "When certain gold ores containing pyrite, graphite, humates and fumates or other organic compounds which are possibly adsorbed on clay minerals are treated with aqueous solution of alkali metal cyanide, the aurocyanide complex which forms is adsorbed by these ""pregrobbing"" species in the ore. Dissolution of gold proceeds until chemical equilibrium is attained between the cyanide complex adsorbed by the ore and in solution.Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) may be used to decrease the adsorptive activity of the prerobbing species in the ore. It has successfully improved recovery at Holt-McDermott Mine and is highly biodegradable.INTRODUCTION Precious metal-bearing ores containing preg-robbing species are poorly amenable to standard cyanidation techniques. The ""preg-robbing"" impurities with which they are associated tend to adsorb the gold cyanide complexes and carry them through the circuit to the tailings. Also, gold may be associated with these impurities in the ore and not be leached by the cyanide complexing agents used in conventional cyanidation techniques.Methods for dealing with the problem of preg-robbinq impurities in gold ores are:Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), in which granular activated carbon is added to compete with preg-robbing species for the gold cyanide complexes. This process can improve gold recovery in mildly preg-robbing ores especially when fine carbons with very high activities are used. However, with severely graphitic ore, the carbon associated with the rock may outperform the granular activated charcoal.Chemical Oxidation, in which the ore is subjected to preliminary chemical oxidation techniques to oxidize carbonaceous materials using such diverse reagents including ozone, sodium hypochlorite, calcium hypochlorite, chlorine gas, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorates and oxygen prior to subjecting the oxidized ore to standard cyanidation treatment to extract gold. This is generally a costly method and will not prove economical on a low-grade ore."

Wireless electronic blasting systems are a new technology that enable truly wireless initiation through rock, air and water. This is achieved using low frequency magnetic induction waves to wirelessly send a firing command to groups of in-hole primers. Fully wireless initiation not only removes the limitations imposed by a wired connection to each primer in a blast, but also enables users to alter the paradigm of conventional mining techniques to advance operational productivity and reduce personnel exposure to high-risk activities. While initially deployed in underground applications, wireless electronic blasting is now being used in the open cut environment. To capture the early impacts in surface mining operations, case studies conducted at three surface mines evaluated blasts utilizing a wireless electronic blasting system against baseline blasts using conventional, wired initiation systems. The purpose of this paper is to outline the specific learnings associated with wireless electronic blasting in surface mining to date. The paper will include references to these specific case studies as well as benefits realized and applications for the future.

Samples of a refractory copper ore were examined to test their response to segregation roasting, flotation, and acetonitrile leaching. Recoveries in the segregation roasting stage were between 60 and 100 per cent, while flotation recoveries varied between 60 and 85 per cent in cleaner concentrates assaying 25-40 per cent copper.The fraction of the copper which could be leached from the concentrate by an acetonitrile/sulphuric acid/cupric ion leach solution varied from 16 to 97 per cent, the lower recoveries being correlated with the presence of sulphide in the concentrate.

Computer systems are an integral part of the mining industry. Before a new operation is started, software requirements, and the need for hardware and communications must be determined. The personnel required to use the software, and to support the necessary infrastructure, must be hired and trained. In this sense, this paper emphasized the needs that geologists and mining engineers have for technical software. Similar requirements apply to all other aspects of a mining operation. These requirements will become even more critical in the years to come, and must be fully assessed before construction of a new mine begins. Dependency of a mine operation on its computer systems must never be underestimated.

Ibis report summarizes the results of the contract. Included are summaries of existing legislation pertaining to outcrop barriers and a state-of-the-art survey of outcrop barrier designs and related, mine closure techniques. Six sites were inspected in the field and are presented as case histories The data analysis presented includes a computer modeled seepage analysis, an overburden blew-out analysis, and a wedge stability analysis. The results tit these analyses are interpreted to form recommendations for coal outcrop barriers which will minimize seepage and the potential for failure. Supplementary support and reinforcement alternatives are also discussed.

In this work the thermodynamics of the metallic sulphate decomposition reactions were studied through thermodynamical calculations and thermogravimetric methods. The decomposition temperatures and mechanisms were determined for cupric sulphate, ferric sulphate and also for industrial flue dust from a copper flash smelting process. The aim was to determine the thermodynamic conditions for sulphate decomposition and to estimate whether the reactions are kinetically likely to take place in the flash smelting process heat recovery equipment. The information is essential in CFD-modelling of the reactions taking place in the boiler and for optimising the process.

2We use field measurements to quantify physical processes that accompany different types of mining explosions. The data sets collected include three-component ground motion, acoustic, video and high speed film, three dimensional topography, geological and geophysical properties, design blast pattern and timing, and velocity of detonation in the explosive for individual borehole detonation times. The explosions include simple single-fired contained explosions, ones designed to bulk and fracture material and those that cast material. Our goal is a physical understanding of these sources for the purposes of optimizing blasting practices.

"INTRODUCTION Secondary recovery of oil by water-flooding is practiced more extensively in North Texas than in any other section of the State, and the progress and experience of the operations in that area are of continuing interest to all branches of the oil industry. The first Bureau of Mines report on water flooding in North Texas 7/ chronicled the activities from December 7, 193f', when the Railroad Commission of Texas granted The Texas Co. the first permit to inject water into an oil-bearing sand, through 1944. This second report has been prepared as a supplement to Report of Investigations 3906 to show the progress and expansion of water-flooding. The format of this report is almost identical with what of report of Investigations 3906, except for a few miner changes. For the sake of brevity, certain basic information contained on the first report has not been repealed, and the reader is urged to consider the two reports as corporation writings.The North Texas area, as encompassed by the two reports, corresponds Railroad Commission of Texas Districts 7P and 9. Oil-development operations in the two districts, since oil was discovered in 1904, have resulted in the recovery of approximately 1,400,000,000 barrels of oil from a proved area that has been estimated to exceed 413,000 acres. During October barrels of oil was produces by primary and secondary-recovery methods from 1,746 flowing wells and 25,211 pumping wells, a daily average 6.6 barrels per well. Of this total volume of oil recovered in October 1947, 47,965 barrels (0.87 percent) was recovered from leases on which water-flooding operations were in progresses."
