Mine ventilation, requires electricity to operate the fans and fossil fuel for heating. Typically, this accounts for approximately 40% of the overall underground energy consumption. This is considerable, and one of the major causes of this expense is that most mine ventilation systems are designed for the "worst-case-scenario" with respect to ventilation demand, which is commonly dictated by diesel equipment usage. Once designed, mines tend to operate their ventilation system at this peak level despite their exceeding day-to-day development and production needs due to lack of appropriate ventilation controls. In underground metal mines, TeleminingTM, which includes the tele-remote operation of mobile development and production equipment from surface, will change the mine design criteria including its support infrastructure such as the ventilation system. With the removal of machine operators to surface control rooms, conventional ventilation systems designed to dilute and remove pollutants can become redundant. Depending on the ultimate need for ventilation, its cost in automated mines with tele-remote equipment operated from surface will be lower than the cost of ventilation in conventional mines. These cost savings, which could be significant, would not only come from the ability to reduce the amount of ventilation in the mine, but also through the capacity to automate its distribution. This paper provides an indication of the new airflow requirements in stopes and dead-end developments for the tele-remote and automated mining processes based on climatic modelling. Furthermore, this paper makes a cost benefit analysis by comparing the ventilation system operating cost of a conventional underground metal mine based on the mobile diesel powered equipment design criteria with the newly redesigned ventilation system operating cost of an automated mine based on the "heat management" design criteria.

Kansanshi Copper Smelter began operation in March 2015. The smelter features a single Isasmelt furnace for smelting, one 6-in-line electric furnace for matte-settling and slag-cleaning duties, four Peirce- Smith converters and two rotary anode furnaces. A 1,450 t/day oxygen plant and a 4,085 t/day sulphuric acid plant are included in the smelter operations. This paper gives an overview of the operational performance to date with summary data for each smelter section. Challenges such as an unforeseen refractory failure in the Isasmelt furnace in 2016 are discussed. Design improvements around the electric furnace are mentioned. Plans for potential future improvements are put into context. A consistent focus on operations, maintenance and continuous improvement has seen the smelter easily achieve its nameplate capacity of 1.2 million tonnes per annum of copper concentrate throughput. The smelter now operates consistently at a concentrate throughput rate of 1.38 million tonnes per annum of copper concentrate. INTRODUCTION The smelter was commissioned in March 2015. Design and commissioning of the smelter have been discussed by de Vries, Hunt, Hanschar and Louie (2016). The smelter rapidly ramped up to achieve nameplate production (1.2 million tonnes per year concentrate) and in 2018 operated consistently at the rate of 1.38 million tonnes per year concentrate. This paper presents major operational data for each section of the plant and describes significant events and improvements during the first four years of operation. The smelter flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.

Studies on the initiation and propagation of mine fires have dealt almost exclusively with coal. It has been assumed that the self-heating potential of carbonaceous shales and coal wastes is relatively low. However, in abandoned coal mines and waste banks, initiation and propagation of fires may be strongly dependent on the self-heating tendency of these materials. The purpose of this study was to compare the self-heating probability of carbonaceous shales and coal wastes to that of coals. This study utilized a modified differential thermal analysis method, in which the combustion furnace temperature was the reference to which the sample temperature was compared. Based on the distribution of the maximum temperature differential and the sample heating rate, a self-heating probability value (SHPV) was calculated that corresponded to observed self-heating behavior. In this study, several of the carbonaceous shales and one coal waste had relatively high SHPV. The SHPV did not correspond directly to heating values or to differences in sulfur concentration.

Natural lignocellulosic fibers are successfully replacing synthetic fibers in many engineering applications. In addition to well-known conventional lignocellulosic fibers, others with promising properties are now being considered. The present work investigated the mechanical and structural characteristics of a relatively high strength fiber, curaua (Ananas erectifolius) from the Amazon region of Brazil. The results obtained from tensile tests confirmed the superior strength while scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis displayed features that justify the possibility of using the curaua fiber as an effective reinforcement for polymeric composites.

The Thor lake deposit is a world class resource of rare earth (REE) metals and minerals in Canada. Development work to optimize a REE mineral recovery process flow sheet is underway, however, given the ore mineralogy; the developed reagent scheme is relatively complex. As part of a research project, micro flotation tests were conducted on a feed sample in order to examine factors affecting stream partitioning. SEM-EDX was performed to evaluate variability in grain composition between streams (concentrate and tails) and TOF-SIMS surface analysis was used to determine statistically significant differences in surface species particularly related to potential activation (or depression) of the examined mineral phases. SEM-EDX analysis reveal that the concentrate has a significantly higher proportion of REE bearing grains (carbonates and phosphates) relative to the tail (almost none were identified). Spectral fingerprinting by TOF-SIMS has allowed for the identification of all reagent species investigated. Reagent signal intensity discrimination on test stream mineral surfaces was observed by the TOF-SIMS analysis using reagents at plant concentration levels. TOF-SIMS analysis confirmed that REE bearing grains reporting to the concentrate are doing so in response to collector attachment whereas grains reporting to the tail are doing so in response to a lack of collector and/or in combination with the presence of the depressant. The surface analysis of gangue phases reveal a similar reagent discrimination; the signal intensity of collector species was significantly higher on the concentrate samples relative to the tails while depressant species were significantly enriched on the surface of the gangue phases in the tail samples. A detailed evaluation of the surface species representing the various reagents used in flotation scheme revealed a distinct competitive relationship between two of the reagents. The surface analysis identified that when used in concurrently, there appears to be a negative feedback resulting in a significant reduction in loading for several of the collectors on grains reporting to the concentrate. This study was conducted as part of a project involving the evaluation of a new type of noise exposure monitoring paradigm. Laboratory tests were conducted to assess how “nonstandard” dosimeter microphones and microphone po­sitions measured noise levels under different acoustical condi­tions (i.e., diffuse ?eld and direct ?eld). The data presented in this article re?ect measurement differences due to microphone position and mounting/supporting structure only and are not an evaluation of any particular complete dosimeter system. To varying degrees, the results obtained with the dosimeter microphones used in this study differed from the reference results obtained in the unperturbed (subject absent) sound ?eld with a precision (suitable for use in an ANSI Type 1 sound level meter) 1/2 -inch (12.7 mm) measurement microphone. Effects of dosimeter microphone placement in a diffuse ?eld were found to be minor for most of the test microphones/locations, while direct ?eld microphone placement effects were found to be quite large depending on the microphone position and supporting structure, sound source location, and noise spectrum.

Amsterdam City Council is building a new metro line, the North–South Line. The line passes under Amsterdam Central Station (a listed building) about 18m below street level. The retaining wall that has to be built underneath the existing building is an innovative construction consisting of two rows of steel piles interspersed with a solid mass of overlapping jet grout columns: a composite ‘sandwich’ wall. This paper gives an overview of the approach taken to designing (computational models) and building the retaining wall. Special attention is paid to the observational method used for the construction of the jet grout columns.

This study was initiated to investigate the occurrence of cinnabar in the oxidation zones of some mercury sulfide deposits. Seven mines or mine districts were visited and samples were taken from both the oxidation and primary zones of these deposits in order to compare their mineralogies and assess Vie chemical changes that took place during oxidation. As a result of the study of these specimens, several limiting factors are suggested for the chemical environments and processes active in both the deposition and oxidation of mercury sulfide deposits. The Mt. Jackson mine, near Guerneville, California (location map, fig. 1), was studied in some detail and forms the basis of this paper. The mine has not heretofore been described in detail in the literature. The Mt. Jackson mine is considered typical of mercury sulfide deposits occurring at the faulted boundaries of serpentinite bodies and enclosing sediments. Such mines are common in the California and Oregon Coast Ranges? Specimens collected by the author from the New Idria and New Almaden districts, the Mt. Diablo, the Culver Bear, and the Buena Vista mines in California, and the Opalite district (Cordero and Bretz, mines) on the Oregon-Nevada border were studied for comparison with the Mt. Jackson samples. The mine description, maps and sketches were composed from field maps kindly provided by Francis Fredericks, consulting geologist to the Sonoma Quick-silver Mine Inc. during the author's visit in 1962. Additional information was obtained from the company maps and minor corrections and interpretations were added by the author.

"INTRODUCTION In compliance with those provisions of the organic act establishing the Bureau. of Mines which relate to improvement of health conditions of persons engaged in the mining, preparation, or treatment of mineral substances, sanitary surveys have been made of towns and villages housing the coal miners, metal miners, and mill and smelter employees of Utah.The purpose of the surveys is to afford studies of conditions prevailing in the various mining and smelter towns so far as concerns housing, water supplies, sewage disposal, refuse disposal the handling of foodstuffs, general sanitation, wash and. change houses, and the control of preventable diseases, all of which directly or indirectly have a bearing on the health and efficiency of employees and their families. Certain other factors have been added to the general sanitary surveys such as school and recreational facilities, which have a decided influence on contentment and efficiency. Through comparisons of favorable and unfavorable conditions and practices, and the dissemination of such information, improvements can be effected which will benefit both the employees and the employers.ACKNOWLEGMENTSAcknowledgment is made of the many courtesies shown by the officials of companies and towns visited. The history of foundation engineering in Chicago is a tale of innovation, made necessary in order to keep pace with structural technology which allowed taller buildings with heavier bearing loads, to accommodate a non-conducive geologic setting. The geology as it relates to foundation construction and underground construction in general is briefly described. A chronology of important events from the birth of Chicago to the present is presented. The impact of various construction techniques which were either initiated or refined to allow the growth of Chicago are discussed. Introduction The growth of Chicago resulting in today's high-rise high-density population center can be looked upon as a history of modern underground construction. The two major reasons which explain this are 1) It grew up during a period of rapid development in the Industrial Revolution and 2) Its natural geological setting needed a great deal of innovation for continuing growth.

Introduction The mining industry has been using computers since the late 1950s. Despite this early start, the use of mine planning software is not a common practice in many operations. But the trend might be changing because of the availability of relatively inexpensive personal computers (PC). The introduction of these machines has generated unprecedented interest by mine managers to computerize their planning operations. However, some managers have become disappointed with the PC's lack of adequate software and the inability to handle the massive amounts of information required for modeling. This paper is an attempt to shed some light on the future of computers in the mining industry. It will examine: • historical progress in the computer industry, • future advances in the computer industry, • historical usage of computers in mining, and • future alternatives available to mining. Historical Progress The computer industry has come a long way since the first full-fledged electronic digital computer Electronic Numerical Integrator And Calculator (ENIAC) was built in 1946. This machine weighed more than 27 t (30 st). It contained 19,000 vacuum tubes, occupied 139 m2 (1500 sq ft), and could perform 5000 additions per second. By contrast, today's fastest, commercially available computer is the CRAY-X. It weighs less than 5 t (6 st), has no vacuum tubes, occupies less than 9 m2 (100 sq ft), and performs over 100 million operations per second. This is an incredible advancement in less than 40 years. One person commented on the rate of advancement in the computer industry. He suggested that if the auto industry had advanced at the same rate as the electronics industry, we could buy a Rolls Royce for $2.75 and it would run

In tectonically disturbed zones within coal seams, decreases in the amount of kaolinite in the cellular structure of inertiniterich coal are accompanied by increasing kaolinite contents in fractures within the coal and/or rocks of immediately overlying horizons. This is due to fracturing of the inertinite microstructure by tectonic disturbance and remobilization and redistribution of free, fine-grained material (kaolinite and/or inertodetrinite.) Ascending waters are believed to transport the kaolinite in suspension, and redeposit it in the fractures and pores in the overlying horizons. This removal of material from the inertinite-rich coal leads to an increase in porosity (higher free gas storage), a presumed reduction in coal strength and an apparent increased proneness to instantaneous outbursts of coal and gas.

Recycling of retired cadmium telluride (CdTe) photovoltaic (PV) modules has attracted attention due to new European environmental regulations. Recycling tellurium from CdTe PV modules is becoming more important because of the low availability of this metal. We investigated several treatment paths for reclaiming tellurium from solutions obtained from leaching fragments of CdTe PV modules. Our experiments showed that conventional soda ash neutralization/hydrolysis methods recovered only 50~60% of tellurium. However, by appropriately combining neutralization and sulfide precipitation, almost all the tellurium present in the leaching solution was precipitated and recovered; the concentration of tellurium in the processed solution was reduced from 900-1000 mg/L to less than 1 mg/L, yielding a tellurium recovery greater than 99%. This method can be incorporated in the scheme of recycling spent CdTe PV modules and manufacturing wastes. It may be also an alternative to the current operations for removing tellurium from copper anode slime leaching solutions.

A risk model for assessment of the uncertainty in the forecasts of the planned profit is developed. It is based on the selling price of the metal recovered from the ore and the production per shift of the excavators. These two critical variables characterise the economic and technical aspects of the mining venture. Time-series methodology is used to describe the behaviour of the economic variable, which improves the adequacy of the modelling. A hypothetical open-pit gold mine is used to illustrate the application of the model. Results obtained show that the model is a good alternative to sensitivity analysis in taking account of the stochastic character of the price of the metal recovered from the excavated ore and the production per shift of the excavators used. The model can be extended by the inclusion of new variables that have a probabilistic nature

In 1986, United States' barite production fell 48.9%, consumption - sold or used by grinding plants - was off 47.3%, and imports were down 63.8%. Meanwhile, world mine production decreased 29.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. However, value of US-produced barite FOB mine increased 46.51%, according to USBM figures. The declared value CIF US port of all imported unground barite decreased from $41.94/t ($46.23 per st) to $39.02/t ($43.01 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of barite with 69% of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and California. The USBM estimates that 65% of the barite mined was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35% was used in the production of barium chemicals and as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector made up a larger percentage of the US produced barite in 1987 than it did in 1986, increasing the overall value per ton of barite. Barite consumption was at its lowest since 1963. It is estimated that 80% of the barite was consumed in the drilling fluid market. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass, and as filler in plastics and paper. The decline of barite used in drilling fluid followed the decline in the average number rotary rigs operating - 964 versus 1968 in 1985. This was the lowest average number of rotary rigs operating since 1971. The non-oilfield market was up 5.3% in 1986. This increase can be attributed to the increased use as a filler in plastics. Imports of crude barite, though down nearly two-thirds, still made up 65% of the barite consumed in the US. China was the leading exporter to the US with 58%, followed by India, 15.4%; Morocco, 11%; Thailand, 5.4%; Mexico, 4.6%; Chile, 3.9%; and Ireland, 1.7%. Less than 1% of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Imports of ground barite dropped from 64.4 kt (71,000 st) to 19.8 kt (21,800 st) in 1986. Of this amount, 14.1 kt (15,500 st) were used in drilling fluids in 1986 and the remainder for non-oilfield use. During 1986, more of the grinding plants supplying the drilling fluid market were closed. Dresser Magcobar and IMCO Services, a Halliburton company, formed M-I Drilling Fluids Co. Mine production in the US will probably decrease in 1987 due to the lower cost of imported ore. No significant change is expected in the drilling fluid market. The average number of operating rotary rigs is estimated at 950 in 1987 versus 965 in 1986. The nondrilling fluid markets (chemicals, glass, and filler) will follow the overall US economy. Bauxite and alumina R. J. Anderson, Ohio State University US bauxite production in 1986 dropped to a pre-World War II level, continuing a decline that began a decade ago. 1986 production totaled 450 kt (496,000 st), compared to 674 kt (743,000 st) in 1985. World production of bauxite also decreased in 1986. This reflected the soft market in alumina, aluminum, and related products. Total mine production worldwide came to 79 Mt (87 million st), down from 85 Mt (94 million st) in 1985. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Australian production of bauxite led all other sources. No other country approached the 28 Mt (31 million st) mined in Australia in 1986, despite a 4.4-Mt (4.9-million st) drop in its output from 1985. Other major producers in 1986 were: Guinea 11 Mt (12 million st), Brazil, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), Jamaica, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), and Suriname 2.8 Mt (3 million st). Despite weakness in world demand for bauxite, Venezuela, heretofore an alumina producer, is now pushing development of a new mining venture near the western border of the state of Bolivar. Plans call for barging bauxite down the Orinoco River to the Ciudad Guyana alumina plant, a distance of 650 km (400 miles).

Portland cement is primarily used to solidify backfill in underground mine workings and it represents a major cost in mining operations. CANMET-MMSL has invented an alternative binder technology that does not contain any amount of Portland cement and is made using waste materials, such as development rock and smelter slag. The technology has been successfully tested with many types of base metal and ferrous slag. Research conducted in collaboration with several mining operations in Canada has shown that the CANMET-MMSL binder has considerable potential as a replacement for Portland cement in mine backfill. An integral part of the overall mining operation, backfill is used for two main purposes: safety and environmental remediation. Depending on the mining method used, backfill provides a working surface, stabilizes stope and pillar walls, as well as the surrounding rock mass, and controls caving of stope backs. There are several benefits associated with the replacement of Portland cement in backfill, including reductions in (i) the footprint by placement of slag waste underground, (ii) the environmental effects and long term liability resulting from disposal and containment of slag waste on surface such as acid rock drainage, (iii) GHG as a result of reduced Portland cement usage (the production of 1 ton of Portland cement produces 1 ton of GHG), and (iv) the significant costs associated with reduced Portland cement usage.

The structural evaluation of seismic performance of an existing hospital in Long Beach, California, required spring constants of foundation elements. The structure included support by deep foundation elements comprised of belled (underreamed) caissons. The available relationships in the governing building code (ASCE41-13) to compute axial stiffness is not applicable due to the belled configuration of the caissons. The large diameter of the bells required consideration of the foundation medium to the axial stiffness; a detail not clearly described in ASCE 41-13. Furthermore, prescriptive equations in ASCE 41- 13 used to estimate lateral stiffness only consider pile groups with the assumption that the only source of lateral stiffness is the axial reaction of individual piles. These assumptions were invalid for the project at hand where all caissons are configured as single foundation elements, not a pile group. In the present work, the approach taken to estimate seismic stiffness of single-belled caissons is described which accounts for the elastic behavior of the foundation medium below the bell base and lateral behavior of single-pile shafts. Results of the work provide a more satisfactory derivation of the spring constants consistent with current modeling methods. INTRODUCTION Seismic evaluation of an existing hospital in Long Beach, California, required geotechnical investigation followed by site-specific ground motion analysis. This evaluation was required by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development (OSHPD) in order to meet the requirements of the Structural Performance Category 4D (SPC-4D) published as a part of the 2016 California Building Code, CBC (Section 3412A). SPC-4D utilizes ASCE41-13, as modified by OSHPD, and involves two seismic performance objectives: BSE-1E (20% probability of exceedance in 50 years) and BSE-2E (5% probability of exceedance in 50 years). Spring constants and capacities of foundation elements were needed for evaluation of the structural performance of the building subjected to these two performance objectives. Our review of the as-built foundation plans indicated that both shallow footings and caissons were used for support of the structure. The plans demonstrated that all caissons are belled (under-reamed) and are individual, i.e. not part of pile groups. In this paper, the subject site condition and foundation elements are described first. This is followed by details of assessing spring constants and vertical capacities for belled caissons. The new requirements of the 2016 CBC concerning the evaluation of critical facilities will likely entail evaluation of other structures with belled caissons due to the more extensive use of these foundations in the past. This paper proposes a method to address the conditions of individual belled caissons not explicitly considered in the current code provisions.

Significant effort was made in 2003 and 2004 to upgrade the existing instrumentation and process control infrastructure at the Phelps Dodge Bagdad copper concentrator. Specifically, • cameras were installed on the feed belt for online image analysis data, • ultrasonic level sensors were installed for froth height and sump level control, • a trial froth image system was installed on one of the rougher rows, and • a new expert system to tie everything together was integrated and tuned in-house. Control philosophy, observations, opinions, and general tips and tricks are discussed with the hope of assisting other plant personnel and expert system integrators.
