This paper identifies the need for the development of specialized inverse solution techniques for the analysis of pressure transient data for the characterization of the transport and sorption properties of coal seams. Central to the proposed inverse solution technique is a specially structured artificial neural network (ANN). The most important transport and sorption characteristics of coal seams are butt and face cleat permeabilities, macropore porosity, Langmuir volume constant, Langmuir pressure constant, and sorption time constant. Conventional methods, such as type curve matching techniques and laboratory-derived measurements are handicapped in terms of being representative over the entire domain of interest. In this paper, we utilize analytical forward solution techniques for various combinations of characteristics of coal seams to generate training and testing patterns. These training patterns are shown to an ANN structured to learn the ubiquitous non-linear relationships that exist between coal seam properties, input conditions and the pressure transients measured. The trained networks are then extensively tested to ensure that they have effectively learned the training patterns. In the final stage of the development, the networks are run in the prediction mode. The responses of the networks are found to be in agreement with the input data. The developed networks are able to generate results generally within 5% error margin for permeability and porosity and 20% error margin for the sorption characteristics of coal seams. A number of examples highlighting the capabilities and degree of effectiveness of the network in characterizing the coal seams areincluded. Selection of the best possible truck type (model) is of crucial importance for the mine decision-makers. In this paper, authors contribute to the body of knowledge by developing a novel methodology for the selection of mining truck. Both the Coefficient of Technical Level (CTL) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods were used in this study. The CTL represents a mathematical function which takes into consideration the interrelations among the main technical parameters of mining trucks. The authors developed a hierarchical structure where both attribute categories and their importance, i.e. priority or weight in the selection process were determined. For each category, a number of sub-attributes and their priorities were assigned, and a pairwise comparison among them was performed using the AHP method. In the final part of the study, the CTL was integrated into the AHP and represents a holistic approach in the selection of mining trucks. A case study on 180 tonnes truck category offered by five manufacturers was carried out. A sensitivity study of obtained results was also performed indicating a very stable solution. The methodology presented in this paper may be used by mining operators to help in the selection of a specific type when acquiring a new truck. It may also be used by equipment manufacturers to help in analysis of potential benefits of envisaged modifications concerning an existing truck type and/or development of a new type.

The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

The men are killed by falls singly or in small groups and little or no publicity is given these accidents as they lack the spectacular features of gas and dust explosions. As a result, the public and even the miners have the impression that accidents from falls of roof and coal are just one of the unavoidable hazards of the coal-mining industry. This belief is not true. Accidents caused by falls can be avoided largely by the application of sound engineering principles, by education, and by proper leadership in the industry, just as gas and dust explosions and accidents caused by explosives have been reduced in recent years. The necessity for studying falls of roof and coal becomes apparent by referring to the following data from a table by Adams and Chenoweth:3

Open-source technology for supporting the Industry 4.0 has become the target of academic research in many sectors. This study reviewed the trends of open-source technology, its forms, and some industrial applications. As a case study using open-source hardware and software for the mining industry, this study proposed a low-cost environmental monitoring system for non-metallic underground mines to support mine safety and occupational health issues. The system was developed using open-source hardware, Arduino and 3D printer, to design the monitoring device. An open-source software, MIT App Inventor, was used for developing an Android application for smartphones to enable remote communication with the system. Field experiments were conducted at an underground tunnel and a non-metallic underground mining site to assess the performance of the system in both mobile and static modes, respectively. Although a few limitations related to the precision of the low-cost dust and gas sensors still exist, the findings of the experiments show that the mining industry can benefit from open-source technology deployment when considering cost factors

"Falcon concentrators are enhanced gravity separators designed for concentrating fine and ultrafine slurries. The Falcon UF model is unique in that it is dedicated to beneficiation of ultrafines, one key feature being that it does not make use of any fluidisation water. In a former study, we investigated the physical mechanisms that govern the transport of ultrafine particles (in the range 10 to 80 µm) inside Falcon UF concentrators, and concluded that separation efficiency is governed by differential settling. Initially, we derived and published a predictive model of the partition function under dilute conditions. The present paper proposes an extension of the initial model to concentrated ultrafine suspensions for application to industrial scenarios. The paper discusses how hindered settling has been added into the initial model to account for solid concentration effects. The modified model is tested against experiments carried out with a laboratory scale UF Falcon concentrator from dilute conditions up to 30 vol%. A good agreement between measurements and model predictions is obtained, which confirms that our hypotheses about the physics of separation inside a UF Falcon separator remain valid even at high concentrations.INTRODUCTIONThe Falcon concentrator is a fast spinning bowl that is fed at its centre of rotation. It uses centrifugal force to separate particles that are transported inside a thin liquid film that flows upward along the inclined wall of the bowl (McAlister and Armstrong, 1998). Due to differential settling, dense and coarse particles are concentrated inside the bowl whereas light and fine particles are rejected with the overflow stream. The fast rotation speed of the bowl yields high centrifugal force several hundred times the attraction of Earth. Despite the thinness of the liquid film (between 100 µm and 1 mm with a Falcon L40) where separation takes place, the Falcon concentrator can treat high flowrates (up to 30 L/min). At the bottom of the bowl, an impeller transmits the bowl rotation to the feed, which drains upward by centrifugal force as soon as it hits the base of the spinning bowl (Figure 1)."

Bolnore Village in Haywards Heath, Sussex, England, is a large development covering 8 to 10 hectares and expected to provide 1500 homes in five phases to assist in the continuing demand for new homes in the London area. Part of the development required housing on a relatively shallow slope found to have deep seated failure planes which are fairly prevalent in this part of Sussex. Locally the slope angle was around 20 degrees but more typically the gradient was 6 to 7 degrees. There were significant concerns about slope stability and bearing capacity due to pre-existing shear surfaces and the complex geotechnical profile. There was some evidence of instability in the form of residual shear surfaces and tension cracks. The development required terracing the site with retaining structures up to 5 meters in height, formation of access roads and foundations of new houses. The developer Crest Nicholson adopted a collaborative approach with consulting engineers Powell Tolner and specialist geotechnical contractor Keller Ground Engineering. The solution consisted of a novel combination of contiguous bored piling, ground anchors, and both block work and timbacrib retaining walls to ensure the geotechnical issues were adequately addressed within the time and cost constraints set by the team. Dry separation was the predominant method of coal cleaning in the United States from the 1930s to 1980s. The application peak of dry separators for cleaning raw coal was in 1965, when about 23.1 Mt of cleaned bituminous coal was produced. The main advantage of dry coal cleaning is the elimination RIWKH GHZDWHULQJ VWDJHV DQG VLJQL¿FDQWO\ UHGXFHG moisture in comparison to wet processing. In addition, developed dust control systems have made dry cleaning method an environmentally friendly process. The largest air-based coal cleaning plant was built in Pennsylvania in 1968 and could clean 1,272 t/h of raw coal sized smaller than 19 mm. This was followed by a decline in dry coal cleaning to less than 3.6 Mt in 1988. Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. The possible contribution of an improved mineral economy to the further advancement of the lesser developed regions of the world is a vital consideration today. Many of the newly independent countries recognize the problems and the challenge involved in orderly development of mineral resources. Some countries are inventorying resources, planning development, and encouraging local and foreign participation. The Malagasy Republic, composed of the island of Madagascar and the immediately adjacent islands, formerly the French Overseas Territory of Madagascar, is one of the members of the French Community which achieved independence in 1960. It is making real progress towards improving its mineral economy, an effort particularly remarkable considering the generally unfavorable geographic location of the area with respect to world markets and what is, after all, a comparatively sparse-economic mineralization in the light of discoveries to date. Most of the development of the Malagasy economy before independence was fostered by French private enterprise, although the State participated in some ventures. Since independence, the Government has encouraged private investment from a variety of sources through favorable legislation and has indicated that legitimate investment projects that will further advance social and economic programs will be welcome.

Recycling is generally a more sustainable alternative to landfilling. Its financial costs however, do not always justify its practice, especially in the short term. As a result, even for precious metals such as platinum, significant amounts can end up unrecovered. In considering risks of materials scarcity for firms that require platinum and platinum products, this paper examines how recycling provides additional benefits as a risk-mitigating strategy against scarcity. The experimental platform for this examination is a System Dynamics simulation model that strives to capture the dynamics of platinum market supply, demand and price. The detailed structures of supply and demand are key features of the model. Results show that since the secondary supply of platinum depends on a supply chain separate from primary extraction, recycling can diversify the risks of primary supply instabilities and reduce the impact of price fluctuations upon firms.

Introduction The subject of basic refractories is daily becoming of increased importance in metallurgical processes, and there is a constantly growing necessity for the development of better materials. This fact, together with the realization that Canada possesses one of the best sources of such refractories in the British Empire, if not in the world, made it appear? advisable that the subject be presented to the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress at the 1927 meeting. Having been in close touch with developments in the Canadian product during the past five years, G. M. Carrie was requested to prepare such a paper. The Canadian producers of magnesia refractories have succeeded in developing the product to a place where it has almost entirely displaced imported materials from the Canadian market. These developments were made possible by a close study of the methods of preparation of the material, and by an exceedingly careful control of the manufacturing process so as to obtain a thorough blending of the different constituents with the resultant uniformity of composition. This point is very important to the metallurgist, as un-uniform materials are a potent cause of difficulties in most manufacturing processes and the constant trend is towards their elimination. The temperature at which the Canadian material is burned ensures high specific gravity and thorough shrinkage. The grain size of the product is so controlled that the voids are only just sufficient to allow of proper bonding, thus making possible a dense, hard bottom affording high resistance to erosion and shock. Careful proportioning of the constituent elements absolutely prevents disintegration.

As cities are growing all over the world, the need for urban transportation facilities are on the rise. Designers (of these facilities) today are faced with a number of constraints for their design, of the most is the space limitation and impact of new construction activities to the community. A typical subway station, as the focus of this paper, is approximately 600 to 1000 feet long, 50 feet wide and 2 to 3 story high. With such a large volume of construction activities, it is easily realized why underground stations are becoming obvious choice for larger cities eventhough the cost could be 2 1/2 to 3 times as much as an aerial station and 4 to 5 times that of an at-grade station [O'Neil et. al.(1977)]. Since cost is an important factor which is always increasing, therefore, the designer should have a good planning, consider alternatives for design and come up with a realistic design with minimum impact to the community. This paper is about the geotechnical considerations that the designer should be aware of. PLANNING A 1977 report [O'Neil et. al.(1977)] on the construction costs for a number of underground subway stations indicate that about 4 0% of the cost is site-controlled, 35% is structural items, and 25% is finish and equipment. It is seen that of opportunity exists for cost savings in the site selection and proper use of the site. Once the site is selected, the cost of construction become controlled by urban conditions at the site, geotechnical conditions, station size and depth. Therefore, the design-solution is very much site-specific. The geotecnical designer should collect the following information at the early phase of the design:

The primary objective of this paper is to discuss the hazards and furnish a list of recommendations for the safe operation of quarries and related works. They have been compiled from Bureau of Mines publications covering the safety experience of engineers before and during the year in the mineral industry,5 from a publication of the National Safety Council, Inc.,6 from explosives recommendations made by various explosives manufacturers,7 and from suggestions obtained from quarries visited. The second objective is to describe and illustrate safety devices, practices, and quarrying methods. The quarrying and related industries of the United States had a lower accident-frequency rate than either the metal- or coal-mining industry as reported for 1942.8 However, the quarry industry ranked eleventh in 15 major industries during 1942 in lost-time accident fre¬quency; metal mining ranked fourteenth and coal mining fifteenth.

Large amounts of manganese-rich slag were generated from smelting low-grade manganese ore containing high iron and high phosphorus in electric furnace or blast furnace, which contain 25–40 mass% Mn. This paper describes an efficient hydrometallurgical process for the utilization of high manganese slag instead of conventional usage of pyrometallurgical route for manganese recovery. Pressure acid leaching of manganese-rich slag using air as pressurized gas is studied systematically. The effects of mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, concentration of sulfuric acid, leaching temperature, partial air pressure, leaching time, and liquid-solid (L/S) ratio on the separation of manganese with other main impurity components were investigated comprehensively. Under the following optimal process conditions, weight of manganese-rich slag powder,100 g; mass ratio of manganese-rich slag to pyrite, 20:1; sulfuric acid concentration of 140 g/L; air pressure of 0.6 MPa; leaching temperature of 140 °C; leaching time of 1 h; L/S of 7:1; ore size of 75–80 μm; and stirring rate of 600 rpm, the extraction rate of Mn reached 94%, and the dissolution percentage of Si, Al, and Fe are as low as 2%, 6%, and 10%, respectively. The leaching slurry presented a good solid-liquid separation characteristic. The silicic acid formed during sulfuric acid leaching manganese silicates was converted to filterable dehydrated SiO2 particles which precipitated in the residue under the condition of higher temperature with higher pressure. The effect of adding pyrite may be to reduced iron ions and decreased the output of iron hydroxide colloid and also reduced MnO2 to manganese sulfate in sulfuric acid leaching. Thus the formation possibility of colloid such as silica gel and iron hydroxide was decreased, and higher yield of manganese sulfate could be achieved.
