Longwall mining has existed in Utah for more than half a century. Much of this mining occurred at depths of cover that significantly exceed those encountered by most other U.S. longwall operations. Deep cover causes high ground stress, which can combine with geology to create a coal burst hazard. Nearly every longwall mine operating within the Utah’s Book Cliffs coalfield has been affected by coal bursts.

We have developed a novel method - at the laboratory scale - comprising an ion-exchange separation and a membrane-electrolysis step for the purpose of zero-waste regeneration of spent HCl pickling liquors originating from hot-dip galvanizing of common steels. It is aimed at the parallel regeneration of HCl and iron. Experiments revealed that iron can be electrodeposited at high current efficiencies by maintaining the following conditions: 0.04-0.08 M HCl, 500-1000 A/m2, 20°C and stationary electrolyte in a conventional cell. Zinc in the solution did not disturb the deposition of iron, however it contaminated the product and it poisons the anion-exchange membrane required to tackle acidity during electrolysis. For a preliminary separation, anion-exchange tests were carried out to produce pure iron solutions. Beyond the equilibrium studies, column experiments were carried out showing that low flow rates of the loading solution and the ~1.5 M HCl eluent are essential for separation.

Perhaps this is the first time that an analysis of the industrial minerals panorama has been made in Mexico for that type of commodities. Because the non-metallic minerals lack the glamour of the metallic minerals and are usually of less unit value than metallics, a comparative study of these commodities has seldom been attempted. Sulphur, fluorite, barite and few others are an exception. Consequently, the statistics on the lowest per unit value industrial minerals, such as limestone, dolomite, gravels, sands, etc., are usually scarce and not always accurate. The following, then, will be an attempt to show a general status of the industrial minerals in Mexico with due reservations regarding volumes and values. According to Kruger (1971), this group of minerals surprisingly very little known, and called non-metallics because the lack of metallic luster, is the largest group of the mineral kingdom. It constitutes perhaps 75% of all the mineral varieties. For the most part, these minerals are compounds of common acids, sulphides, hydroxides and two elements carbon and sulphur. The list of non-metallic minerals is therefore very long. It includes the borates, carbonates, chlorides, fluorides, nitrates, phosphates, silicates, sulphates and less commonly arsenates, chromates, molybdates, sulphides, tungstates and vanadates. The latter group and many of the oxides are sought usually for their metal content.

Drilling activity in the South Texas area, which includes the South Corpus Christi and Laredo districts, showed a marked decline during 1941 from that of the preceding year. The rate of new discoveries, however, 'compared favorably with exploratory results of 1940 because of the many new productive sands opened in existing fields. South Texas completions for 1941 were about 12.3 per cent below the 1940 figure, compared with an increase of approximately 5.5 per cent in the total number of completions in the United States during 1941 over the 1940 total. During the year, 1452 wells were drilled in this area; of these, 1205 were drilled in or as extensions to the proven fields, and 247 were rank wildcats drilled in search of new producing pools. The comparable 1940 figures were: 1320 field or extension wells and 336 rank wildcats, a total of 1656 completions. This represents a decline in 1941 of approximately 8.7 per cent in proven-area wells, and of about 26.5 per cent in rank wildcats. It must be stressed that wells that were considered rank wildcats at the beginning of operations, but which opened production later classified as additions to existing fields, are not regarded as rank wildcats in this and previous annual reports on this same area. These wells are classified as semiwildcats (Table 2). There were 13 new oil or distillate fields and 4 new gas areas opened during the year, as listed in the next column. This listing represents a decline of 32 per cent from the 25 new areas found during the previous year, and to a great extent can be attributed to the 26.5 per cent decline in wildcatting. The rate of new discoveries based on the 247 wildcats was 14.5 to I, which compares somewhat unfavorably with the 13.4 to I ratio obtained in 1940 (Table 5). Dry wildcats totaled 230. The proof of the prolific character of the South Texas area as a source of petroleum reservoirs is to be found in the fact that of the 1205 field or extension (semiwildcat) wells completed during the past year 61 opened production from new sands or found crude in formerly distillate-producing sands. The 1940 total of 1320 such wells accounted for 50 horizons that provided either new production or crude in distillate sands, and in this respect the 1941 rate of discovery shows to greater advantage, the ratios for new sands being 19.7 to I for 1941 and 26.4 to I for 1940. On average, there are approximately 10 fatal haul truck accidents per year. The most common causes for haul truck accidents include mechanical problems, inadequate training and insufficient road/berm maintenance. Due to the frequency and magnitude of haul truck accidents, new training methods are being investigated. With the widespread availability of computers and new technology becoming more reasonably priced, the ability to incorporate computer-based training for miners is becoming more possible. It has been shown that computer-based training is just as effective in knowledge acquisition as traditional lectures, and computer-based training can lead to a significant increase in the retention of material (Williams and Zahed, 1996). Studies have also shown that more engaging training methods lead to more effective knowledge acquisition (Burke et al., 2006). A supplemental system for current and new miner training to address the common causes of fatal accidents was developed. The training system is a virtual preshift inspection of a haul truck, and it can train new haul truck operators to identify parts that look defective. The training will increase an operator?s ability to recognize problematic parts and correctly identify the corrective action needed. Increasing the quality of training by providing an engaging, simulated hands-on environment will lead to safer behaviors by trainees, which will ultimately lead to fewer accidents and fatalities.

In 1949 the Coal Committee of the Economic Commission for Europe, Geneva, Switzerland, established a Classification Working Party, to develop an international system for classifying coal. This project was necessitated by the increased trade in coal among various nations following World War II. Although national classification systems existed, they had been developed to cover the characteristics of domestic coals without reference to coals of other countries. Different terms for describing similar or identical coals in each nation caused confusion in evaluating coals shipped in international trade. Experts from Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, East Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, and Yugoslavia participated in various stages of the classification work. Walter A. Selvig was appointed by the Bureau of Mines as the technical expert to represent the United States because of his experience in developing and standardizing methods of analyzing and classifying American coals. He served on the Classification Working Party until his retirement from the Bureau of Mines early in 1956. Extensive laboratory work was done in connection with the classification studies at the Pittsburgh Experiment Station of the Bureau of Mines.

In the October 1998 issue of the Holmes Safety Association Bulletin, NIOSH authors Mark Stephenson and Carol Merry wrote the article Hearing loss among miners and measures to protect hearing, which focused on the extensiveness of hearing loss among miners and the use of hearing protection to prevent hearing loss. While the primary importance of engineering controls in preventing hearing loss was discussed, since miners do not generally have control over their work en­vironment or assignments, the article focused on the importance of consis­tent use of hearing protection. In this article, all aspects of a compre­hensive approach to the prevention of hearing loss in miners will be covered. The discussions will do the following: ? describe application of the hierarchy of controls in preventing hear­ing loss in miners, ? give an example for each type of control measure and its impact, ? explain the major provisions, be­yond the hierarchy of controls, of the recent NIOSH document en-titled Criteria for a Recommended Standard: Occupa­tional Noise Exposure, Revised Criteria 1998 relative to a hearing loss prevention program, and ? summarize important points on control of noise exposure for every miner to remember, equipment in most facets of operations. Miners are well aware of noisy areas in or around equipment, icluding extraction machinery such as draglines, power shovels, longwall shearers, and continuous mining machines; powered haulage equipment such as load-haul-dumps, shuttle cars, large trucks, and continuous haulage units; roof bolting machines; jackleg drills and stopers; auxiliary equipment such as compressors, fans, and pumps; size reduction equipment, etc. They are not well aware of the insidious nature of pro­gressive hearing loss, which is per­manent, but they are generally aware of what levels of noise are hazardous and what measures can be taken to reduce their personal noise exposure. Behaviorally, however, there are many reasons why miners choose not to use hearing protection faithfully.

"MMG (Minerals and Metals Group) operates the LXML Sepon’s mineral processing facility located 40 kilometers north of the town of Sepon, in the Savannakhet Province, Lao PDR. The Sepon copper plant produces 70,000 tons/year of LME grade A copper cathode using leachautoclave- SX/EW-flotation technology (Baxter et al., 2003). Pyrite recovery in the flotation circuit is critical to the operation, as it is used to generate acid and soluble ferric ion for the leach circuit. Low pyrite recovery has been an on-going challenge in the flotation circuit. Final tailings characterization work done by Ian Wark Research Institute (Bassell et al., 2006) showed that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse liberated particles and finer particles that have been coated by clay fines.In December of 2005, a joint Cytec-MMG technical program was initiated to address the pyrite recovery issue. A series of diagnostic tests were performed in the Cytec Stamford Research Facility using synthetic plant water showing that the collector was precipitating as a metal salt and was unavailable for mineral attachment. The tests also identified several collector chemistries that would likely be robust in the low pH (< 1), high dissolved metal ion environment and will not complex with metal ions in solution. With the support of the Sepon on-site engineers, an extensive, successful laboratory program was completed, which was subsequently followed by on-plant testing that showed a step wise improvement in pyrite recovery.INTRODUCTIONLow pyrite recovery has been an ongoing problem in the flotation circuit at Sepon. Sulfur recovery (indirect measure of pyrite) was improved from 40% to 65%-75% in mid-2005 when on site laboratory work confirmed that AERO® 8045 Promoter was a more effective collector then AERO® 407 Promoter. However, sulfur recoveries above 65% could never be achieved. Sepon requested the Ian Wark Research Institute to complete a surface analysis study using Scanning Electron Microscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, and Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy to determine if clay coated pyrite played a role. It was concluded that the pyrite losses to the tailings are made up of a combination of coarse (+ 100µm) liberated particles and finer (-74µm) particles that have been coated by clay fines. The majority of the losses appear to be due to the former. In December of 2005, a series of diagnostic tests were performed in Stamford using synthetic plant water in order to identify what chemistries would likely be robust in the slimy low pH and high dissolved metal ion solution environment. Results showed that several chemistries would not complex with ferric, ferrous or copper in solution and therefore should perform well in the Sepon flotation. The incumbent collector, AERO® 8045 Promoter was complexing with metal ions in solution. This resulted in the collector not being available for adsorption onto pyrite."

"Water evaluation and management during mining exploration and operational activities is crucial to minimise direct and indirect operational costs and also in delivering mining companies the less tangible, but equally critical æsocial license to operateÆ.Mining is often carried out in remote areas, where the mine will be the most significant and visible user and potential contaminator of water resources. However, wherever it is located, a mineÆs use of water must be managed in the context of two key aspects: the natural parameters of the resource; its abundance, its temporal variability and its chemical and physical qualities other users of the resource; other industry, potable water supplies and ecological requirements of local habitats.It is vital, therefore, that this commodity be assessed to an appropriate degree to help establish the viability and sustainability of the mining project and identify those other stakeholders who may be affected by the mining companyÆs activities.This paper outlines the background to catchment-scale model and presents a cost-effective method for establishing a robust water baseline and creating a water management tool to be used throughout whole mine life cycle. Numerical surface and groundwater modelling has long been established as a tool for reactive management, following collation of yearsÆ worth of data. Now, using freely available remote sensing data and desk study information, analytical modelling techniques can be used cost effectively to provide mining companies with a tool for assessing and managing their water consumption requirements at the outset of a new project venture.The paper includes a selection of case studies to show how the use of analytical modelling can be used as an evaluation and management tool to help not only assess general watershed parameters and water availability but also how it can be used as a tool to provide decision makers with the information to complete æwhat if?Æ scenario assessments. In this study, a self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) and following acid leaching techniques were carried out to produce boron carbide (B4C) powder. First, B2O3 was obtained through calcinations of H3BO3 at 1073 K for 2 hours. Then, the glassy B2O3 obtained was crushed and sieved. In the SHS experiments, different amounts of B2O3, Mg and C black were used. The SHS product was obtained in the form of black, spongy solid. In the leaching step, the SHS product was leached in a HCl solution to eliminate the MgO and Mg3B2O6. The effect of acid concentration on the selective leaching was studied at different concentration range, solid/liquid (S/L) ratio, and temperature. The products obtained were characterized by using X-ray diffraction, chemical analysis and SEM techniques.

The residues resulting from the retort distillation of zinc ores have from 40 to 75 per cent of the weight of the original ore and contain from 5 to 15 per cent zinc . A rough estimate indicates that approximately 450,000 tons of residues are produced annually in the United States , containing about 36,000 tons of zinc . Besides the current production of residues there are at many smelter sites large accumulations from past operations which are available for treatment if this can be done profitably . In addition to their zinc content the residues contain much unconsumed coal , which has been carbonized during the distillation process , and those from most western ores also contain lead and silver . In this paper is summarized the information obtained in a survey , recently made by the Bureau of Mines , in cooperation with the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy , of processes which are in use or which have been suggested for the treatment of retort residues . The complete report of the survey is to be published as a Technical Paper of the Bureau of Mines .

The one free surface blasting of a concrete block was simulated by Discontinuous Deformation Analysis(DDA) method. Comparing the simulated results with the concrete block blasting experiment, the crack growth and the free surface displacement which were simulated by DDA were observed with a high speed camera.

"Selectively recovering pentlandite from high levels of pyrrhotite presents a technical and operational challenge. The liberation characteristics and also the chemical environment is critical to performing a successful separation. Reviewing the mineralogy to understand the characteristics of the ore and the plant flotation behavior is fundamental to designing a successful improvement program.At Savannah Nickel the challenges presented by a falling nickel price required a rethink of the flowsheet to improve the project economics through improving the concentrate grade and recoveries. Glencore Technology reviewed the plant performance and proposed and tested solutions to improve the grade performance of the concentrator with the support of the plant team. A pilot plant comprising a M20 IsamillTM followed by an L500/1 Jameson Cell was operated on various plant streams. In addition to the pilot plant, flotation surveys and a plant based laboratory program was used to supplement the plant understanding and within two weeks significant improvements were identified and demonstrated. The combination of the pilot operation and the plant based laboratory program was able to quickly demonstrate the improvements and test with equipment that is fully scaleable from pilot plant to full scale.IntroductionPanoramic Resources Limited is a Western Australian mining company formed in 2001 for the purpose of developing the Savannah Nickel Project in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia. Panoramic successfully commissioned the $65 million Savannah Project in late 2004. The process plant at Savannah comprises a single stage crusher, SAG mill, flotation, thickening and filtering stages to produce a bulk nickel, copper, cobalt concentrate. Metallurgical recoveries average 86-89% for nickel, 94-97% for copper and 89-92% for cobalt. The plant was originally designed for a throughput of 750,000 tonnes per annum, but has consistently outperformed the design specifications.Due to low nickel prices the Savannah Nickel mine and processing plant were placed into care and maintenance in May 2016. Prior to suspending production Glencore Technology was engaged to investigate options to improve the concentrate grade. With the discovery of Savannah North in 2014 and the Savannah North Scoping Study demonstrating LoM ~8 years and Mining Inventory of 6.07Mt @ 1.26% Ni, 0.64% Cu and 0.09% Co significant future potential exists. By completing pilot plant studies prior to shutting down, the plant engineering studies can be completed and the plant readied for restart by the time the nickel price improves."

Iron oxide red pigment powders of high quality were synthesized from pyrite cinders. Iron ox-ide red pigment powders were synthesized by hydrothermal method from the precursor of Fe(OH)3 and Fe(OH)2 colloid, which were obtained after ammonia solution reacted with acidic leaching solution produced by the reaction of pyrite cinders with sulfuric acid. Effects of reaction concentration, reaction temperature, reaction time, pH value and n(Fe2+)/n(Fe3+) on main properties of oxide iron red were studied by experiments. The prepared particles were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope(SEM). The results revealed that the synthesized iron oxide red particles were _-Fe2O3 and pseudocubic with particle size of 0.50~0.75µm. Furthermore, the quality of iron oxide red pigment powders reached the first grade of national standard (GB1863-89 ).

During the last 100 years, the submerged arc furnace has been one of the most amazing diversified melting units. These furnaces have found their application in more than 20 different main industrial areas such as iron, ferro alloy, chemical industry, lead, zinc, copper, refractory, titanium oxide, recycling, phosphorus etc. Such an evolution was only possible because of tremendous efforts in research and development and due to the large range of design solutions. The worldwide strong competition also forced the industry and plant suppliers to develop highly efficient, economically balanced units in optimized sizes and with long lifetimes, to adapt to the market conditions. Regarding the environment, the plants improved significantly in terms of water treatment plants and off-gas treatments as well as on site recycling units. This paper will give a short overview regarding the history of the furnace and the latest developments in today?s main application fields: ferro alloys, non-ferrous, special application and recycling. In addition new activities in research and developments are briefly discussed.

The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for removing dragline bucket wire rope terminations with the objective of finding efficient methods that are safer than the method most commonly used at U.S. surface mines, which is to use the explosive impact of a projectile fired from a cannon to remove the rope termination. Removal of a wire rope termination for repair or replacement requires separation of the wedge and socket that lock together to secure the rope end. The Bureau investigated currently used methods and improved upon and tested two safer alternate methods for removing wire rope terminations. A cannon test program was conducted, using 40-and 50-gr primer (detonating) cord, to establish the possible force produced with a 4-in-bore cannon and a 55-lb projectile. Wedge and socket units supplied from cooperating mines were separated under controlled conditions to establish data on separation force requirements. The two alternate methods investigated were use of the force generated by (1) a pendulum ram and by (2) a portable hydraulic pusher. Both methods are capable of providing sufficient force to effect wedge and socket separations on draglines with up to 78-yd3 buckets under normal conditions.

"There is growing evidence that modern methods of mining coal increase the risk of spontaneous combustion. Seemingly unimportant at this time, this hazard could prove to be a barrier to growth and development of the coal industry in some areas of Canada. The paper presents bedrock knowledge on spontaneous combustion gathered by scanning and evaluating current technical and research literature. Special efforts have been made to identify significant coal and environmental factors and to establish criteria for susceptibility. In addition to the state-of-the-art knowledge, preliminary results from on-going studies are discussed."
