AN insistent and steadily growing demand is evident for the broadening of undergraduate curricula in engineering. Among suggested additions are training in public speaking, report writing, business law and contracts, accounting, finance, money and banking, scientific management, economics, social and labor problems, psychology, and ethics. The demand for these subjects comes from the older engineers and from the industries that employ our graduates. Of course, many of the men who suggest such changes are influenced largely by their personal needs and contacts, but the demand is sufficiently widespread to merit serious study by educators. In fact, many educators themselves concur in the proposals for broader training. These matters were examined intensively a few years ago in an exhaustive study of engineering education. Opinion at that time was rather strongly against any profound change. Since then, however, the whole economic system has undergone violent disruption. Even if recommendations made a few years ago were appropriate to the conditions then- obtaining, the enormously changed conditions of the present make advisable a further careful study of this problem. In recent years, mergers, to reduce costs, have sharply limited the number of engineers employed and have thereby intensified the struggle to secure positions. In this stiffer competition, engineers with the most adequate training undoubtedly fare the best.

Researchers at the U. S. Bureau of Mines conducted investigations to evaluate the potential for ground water contamination by mine waste used as backfill. Samples of cemented waste backfill and water discharging from drillholes and seeps were collected to use in chemical analyses and laboratory tests to determine the physical and chemical factors that control release of heavy metals to ground water. Greater water retention by cemented backfill (as compared to uncemented sandfill) reduces the surface area exposed to oxidation, which in turn reduces the amount of acid produced. The acid is neutralized by the cement and minerals contained in the backfill. The grain-size distribution of tailings used for backfill affects the structural integrity of cemented backfill under attack by acidic water; breakdown of the backfill structure releases neutralizing materials faster. Backfilled stopes in rock with low hydraulic conductivities will constitute preferential flow paths after mine flooding; however, the rate of flow through backfill will be much slower than when the stope is partially saturated during mine operation. Considering all factors, acid generation and release of metal ions from cemented backfill should be less than in uncemented sandfill.

The primary objective of this program was to determine the toxic fume and fire hazard of materials used in the construction of mine stoppings and in the sealing and reinforcing of mine ribs and roofs. The materials investigated were: silicone, phenolic, and isocyanate-based rigid foams, as well as epoxy and acrylate mine sealants. Of the rigid foams tested, the X-156 urethane foam presented the greatest toxic hazard based on toxic load values hydrogen chloride was the main toxic species evolved by this foam. In 'lone of the isocyanate-based compositions was hydrogen cyanide the major component, but its contribution increased with temperature. The FS-24 urethane and Celotex Max-Seal isocyanurate foams had the lowest toxic load values, although these two foams have different applications for in-mine use. Of the two mine sealants tested, the latex /acrylic coating presented the greater toxic hazard with acetic acid being the main toxic species evolved.

"This paper introduces the operational concept and the description of a multi-site Remote Support Center for knowledge management and long-term process performance improvement.This centralized Support Center provides real-time monitoring of open-platform process automation systems, and on-line access to process data and control applications information for multiple sites.Considering that process automation is a key enabler to business performance improvement, sustaining effective performance benefits over time becomes essential. Unfortunately, changes in manufacturing process dynamics, technology obsolescence and in plant operational practices cause the control strategies to lose their effectiveness over time unless their performance is periodically evaluated, and if required, tuned to the new process conditions.A new concept in process automation is proposed through the addition of a new control loop based on performance analysis methodology which is intended to feedback process and automation operation information to system and process specialists, allowing for continuous manufacturing process improvement and sustainable production benefits through effectual control strategies.A remote support center can play a key role in the delivery of such services, by providing the base platform from which a comprehensive process overview and a centralized knowledge database can be executed and additionally, as an enabler for plant operational practices change.INTRODUCTIONA Benchmark on Automation Level in Copper Concentrators conducted by AMIRA in 2004, reported that the Codelco divisions scored below their peers in several categories.Codelco had thereafter been looking for a new automation concept, and had focused on process automation as a key enabler for process manufacturing and business performance improvement. The final decision was to create a strategic alliance with a world-class automation technology provider.The traditional approach based on isolated automation solutions/projects, showed that the control strategies benefits were decreasing progressively over time, because of the on-going need to adapt the control models to the ever-changing process conditions and different plant operational practices. Another consequence of this traditional approach was the wide variety of technologies and automation systems deployed in the different plant sites, with no common automation standards, and with low opportunities to transfer knowledge or practices."

The effect of four different second-phase additions on the strength of composite alloys with a common matrix was investigated. The four compositions each consisted of 85 pct by volume of silver with additions of 15 pct of either tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, or nickel. These particular additives were chosen because of their low mutual solid solubilities with silver at room temperature, the alloys consisting essentially of a dispersion strengthened silver matrix in which the second phase is distributed randomly. Test specimens were prepared by a powder metallurgy procedure consisting of ball milling the mixed powders, compacting, and sintering at 920°C for 1 hr in hydrogen. The constituent powders were of CP quality and of particle size between 2 and 10 ?. The compacts were subsequently hot pressed at 1000 psi and 1400° in an Inconel die, coined at room temperature at 60,000 psi and finally annealed and outgassed in vacuum at 800°F. The microstructures of the alloys are shown in Fig. 1, and the microscopically observed porosity grade was A-2 or better as evaluated by ASTM Recommended Practice B 276-54. The properties of the sintered compacts are listed in Table I, and the load-deformation curves in bending are shown in Fig. 2. The samples, of rectangular cross section, were loaded at the center of 58 in. span, and the reported stress was calculated on the basis of linearly elastic behavior in order to allow the comparison of specimens of slightly different dimensions. It is apparent that the tungsten, molybdenum, and tungsten carbide alloys exhibit very similar deformation curves. The moduli of elasticity were determined from the slopes of the stress-deflection curves at small loads. The measured values agree quite well with those calculated by the strength of materials approximation proposed by Paul1 for the elastic constants of mixtures, the calculated values being 15.0, 15.0, 17.4, and 13.4 million psi, respectively, for the tungsten, molybdenum, tungsten carbide, and nickel combinations with silver. The strength of the Ag-Ni composition is appreciably lower than that of the other three alloys. The discrepancy between the two groups is accounted for by the following characteristics of deformation and failure which were observed microscopically during the tests: A) The deformation of the W, Mo, and WC alloys did not involve the second phase particles to any appreciable extent. Slip and fracture took place in the silver-rich matrix alone, although the fracture path generally skirted the particles by favoring the phase boundaries. The deformation proceeded according to the following sequence: 1) formation of small, discontinuous microcracks in areas of the matrix adjacent to a particle, 2) general slip in the matrix and extension of cracks, 3) failure of specimens by propagation of cracks through matrix. The near coincidence of the 3 load-deflection curves suggests that the nature of the second phase particles does not decisively influence the plastic behavior of composite alloys of this composition as long as the particles do not undergo any considerable deformation themselves. B) A markedly different behavior was exhibited by the Ag-Ni composition where the relatively low flow strength is associated with the low yield strength of the nickel grains. Slip in the nickel grains was first observed at a stress of approximately 10,000 psi, although failure, at a later stage, took place by the propagation of cracks through the matrix. The ductility of this aggregate, in which both components deform plastically, is appreciably greater than that of the elastic-plastic composites. In summary: 1) The measured values of the moduli of elasticity of the composite alloys under discussion are in good agreement with the "strength of materials" approximation proposed by Paul.' 2) The overall plastic behavior of these particle-strengthened alloys is unaffected by the nature of the second phase particles, if the latter remain elastic. The Bureau of Mines has reviewed those portions of the "Tariff Schedules of the United States Annotated 1963" that are of interest to the minerals industry. This study shows to what extent rates of duty were altered (increased or decreased), and provides a bridge where possible from the old Schedule A classification sys tem to the new TSUS system of statistical reporting of import data. In general the new tariff has corrected previous classification defects and inconsistencies, but the rates of duties have not been materially changed.

The objectives of the Continuous Shaft Lining (CSL) System are to reduce the costs, safety hazards, and time currently required in lining mine shafts with concrete. The CSL will line machine bored shafts downward from the shaft collar on a continuous basis using an inverted, pressurized slipforming technique. The technique for slip-forming downwards has been demonstrated and refined under this program. The approach taken involved laboratory scale testing of key features of the CSL concept. These feature tests included concrete distribution, concrete sealing, concrete slipforming and development of a reliable concrete mix. Based on these results, a full scale above-ground test facility and CSL were designed and fabricated. The objectives of these tests were to demonstrate the viability of the basic concept; to establish operating limits; and to provide input data and information for the design of a second generation shaft lining system. The results of the program have led to a CSL design and operational philosophy which will need to be tested in an underground environment before industry will accept the technology. However, the next generation CSL promises to meet all the original program technical objectives.

Following the gold discoveries of the late 1800's much was written regarding the vast mineral resources of Alaska, and much interest was aroused, and yet over the years little has been done to exploit those resources. Between 1906 and 1935 the Kennecott copper mines of the Copper River region were the keystone of the mineral economy (fig, 1). After the depletion of the Kennecott ore reserves and aided by the statutory rise in the price of gold, the yellow metal became the major mineral commodity. In recent years it has shared the honors with coal and sand and gravel. Although this trend should indicate the development of a stable, diversified mineral industry, yet the trend of production is downward. This report results from a study by the Federal Bureau of Mines to delineate the problems and to forecast the growth of the mineral industries in Alaska. The need for such a blueprint for the future was enhanced by the population explosion in the United States and the consequent eventual need for additional living space, as well as the current interest in new areas, and the necessity to develop reserves of strategic minerals.

SINCE the "Days of Forty-nine" California has been the premier gold producing state of the union. The greatest production was recorded in 1.852, during which year the state's placer and lode deposits yielded over 81 millions. This peak was followed by a steady decline to about 12 millions during the years 1888 to 189.3, a period marked by the cessation of gravel mining. After 1893, production increased to a new peak of over 22 million in 1915, thereafter decreasing steadily to something over 13 million in 1923. Today; California's gold production shows a decrease of 84 per cent. as compared with the output of 1852, and a decrease of 41 per cent, as compared with 1915. It is not a difficult matter to find the causes of this more recent decline. In 1916 there began an upward swing in the cost of labor, which represents approximately 60 per cent. of the cost of mining, and in the price of supplies, representing the remaining, 40 per cent. This rise continued until 1922 and since that year there has been no decided tendency either upward or downward. The increase in the cost of mining since 1916 is variously estimated at from 50 to 75 per cent.; the price of gold has remained fixed at $20.67 per oz. This condition resulted in wiping out the profits of the low-grade operations which, in recent years, have constituted California's main source of supply of gold ore. It is now predicted that there will be renewed activity in California- gold mining. What are chances for the materialization of this forecast? A boom or even a revival of gold mining must of necessity be brought about or accompanied by one or more of the following factors: 1. A decrease in the cost of mining. 2. An increase in the price of gold. 3. New capital for development. 4. The discovery of new deposits. 5. The revival of hydraulic mining.

Field measurements and theoretical studies have been made of pressure surges—momentary variations in fluid pressure—produced by movement of pipe in mud-filled boreholes. Pressure measurements were recorded by five pressure gauges located at various positions in the borehole. An important positive pressure peak was found to occur as the casing moved with maximum velocity. Important negative peaks were found as the casing was lifted from the slips and as brakes were applied to stop pipe movement. A rigorously formulated theory has successfully predicted the sequence and magnitudes of these positive and negative surges and has established a basis for understanding how they occur. Both the measurements and theory indicate that the most important pressure surge is usually due to viscous drag of the flowing mud. The theory of viscous-drag pressure surges has been approximated by simplified graphs and calculation procedures to facilitate ready use in field operations. Comparison of measured results with those predicted by the simplified theory shows that the magnitude of this surge can be predicted accurately. INTRODUCTION It is widely recognized that raising or lowering pipe in a fluid-filled borehole produces momentary variations in fluid pressure, commonly called pressure surges. Both negative (or "swabbing") surges and positive (or "fracturing") surges may occur. In 1934, Cannon1 measured the negative surges and showed that they could be large enough to cause flow of formation fluids into the well-bore and, in extreme cases, lead to blowout conditions. Later, Coins2 measured the positive surges associated with lowering pipe. His results and subsequent field operations strikingly demonstrated that pressure surges could be an important factor in some cases of lost returns. In addition, although the evidence is less clear than in the case of blowouts and lost returns, other investigators 3, 4 feel that pressure surges probably play a part in many instances of minor gas cutting, salt-water flow and other hole trouble. The importance of pressure surges in drilling operations led naturally to attempts to explain the physical causes, nature and magnitude of the surges. Cardwell5 was the first to publish a theory which allowed the quantitative prediction of momentary pressure variations. He assumed that the drilling fluid was a 300-cp Newtonian fluid in turbulent flow. Most field muds have a considerably lower viscosity and are generally believed to be Bingham plastic in nature.6 However, card-well's results were useful because they were presented in a form convenient for field use and, in some cases, gave a reasonably accurate predicted value for the maximum pressure surge. Subsequently, Ormsby7 published a more comprehensive theory of pressure surges. He discussed both laminar and turbulent flow and considered the theory of mud-bypass devices for reducing pressure surges. As a consequence of his more rigorous approach, his results were more accurate but more complex and difficult to use. Further, both Ormsby and Cardwell considered only the pressure surge arising from viscous drag of the moving mud. Clark later published idealized graphs of surges and presented equations for predicting their magnitudes. In addition to pressure variations arising from viscous drag, he considered those caused by inertial effects. His theory was in this respect more complete than those of Cardwell and Ormsby, although he did not discuss pressures due to breaking of the gel. Furthermore, his equations, while not exceptionally complicated, were too complex for ready use at a drilling location. One difficulty common to all three theories is that none was tested rigorously by direct comparison with measured pressure surges. Their accuracy, therefore, could, not be demonstrated. Further, the two theories based on most realistic assumptions (Ormsby and Clark) required the solution of one or more rather complex algebraic equations. The research described in this paper was undertaken to supplement that described and to overcome some of the difficulties noted. It seemed obvious that a fully satisfactory study of pressure surges should encompass three main phases. 1. A valid theory useful in all field situations must be developed. This theory must be based upon realistic assumptions, must be formulated rigorously and should lead to clear concepts whereby the nature of pressure surges can be easily understood. 2. The theory, however complex and involved, ultimately must be presented in simplified form for convenient field use. This may involve extensive machine computations and the use of figures and empirical equations. 3. The accuracy of the simplified equations must be established by comparing measured pressure surges with those predicted by the theory. These must agree both in their characteristic nature and in magnitude. 'This means that careful measurements of surges occurring in actual field operations must be made.

"An attempt to review the recent literature on comminution reveals at once that the subject has many ramifications and that the applications are so diverse that there are very few general statements which can be made.It. seems reasonable to start classification on the basis of size of material as Input to the comminution process. However, we find that this can only be done in a very imprecise manner.The initial step of breaking rock from its natural state of very large pieces in geological formations into sizes suitable for processing is accomplished by blasting. This step in the process has not been ex-amined in this project except to note that great changes have been made during the last decade or so in the explosives used, and in the method of handling them. We should determine what effect changes in mining methods can have on the need for crushing.The second step in the process is usually primary crushing, performed by gyratory or jaw crushers. The largest chunk which can be fed to a jaw crusher depends on the size of the machine, and should be larger than the largest fragment produced in the miring process. It is obvious that the larger the crusher, the less care required in mining to en¬sure the absence of rocks too large to be crushed. The optimum size of crusher to minimize overall cost of mining and reduction is not at all obvious, and no information on this point has come to light in this investigation.It is rather generally accepted that size reduction is most efficiently done in small stages, and that different machines have different opti¬mum size ranges of feed. For example, crushers are preferred for sizes above about 1"", rod mills for the range between 1"" and 0.1"", ball mills are preferred from 0.1""down to perhaps 10 microns, and vibratory mills, or jet mills, below 10 microns."

IT is now generally conceded that coal is the product of deposition and transformation of debris of forests and swamps.29 Ample data are available to illustrate the metamorphosis of biochemical substances through biological action; other data show the progressive regional metamorphism existing in coal beds;25 and numerous examples of change effected by intrusion of igneous dikes into coal deposits have been established .R3 However, often the relative importance of the biological and the geological factor in determining the character of the various natural coals is a debatable question. Since both biological and geological factors are ever present in nature, the problem, at first glance, would appear to resemble certain probability problems: specifically the simultaneous toss of two coins, with the biological factor as heads and the geological as tails. The probability is 2:I for the combined effect of both factors, as compared to the exclusive effect of either one, if the a priori probability is the same for each factor. This condition can be analyzed by a thermodynamic treatment of data, which may be obtained from a consideration of pertinent biological, chemical, geophysical and geological facts. SYNOPSIS OF BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL FACTS The biosphere is not sterile; i.e., microorganisms are always present. Microorganisms have been established in the ocean deep, under the ice of the polar regions, in the sand of the deserts, and in swamps far below the surface. The various biological media may be acid, neutral, or alkaline, and they may or may not be readily accessible to air. Microorganisms are encountered almost everywhere, except where the temperature is not within the range tolerable by microbial life. Of course, with changing conditions, the type of microorganisms will change. All chemical products of life-proteins, fats, carbohydrates, lignins, waxes, resinsmay serve as a habitat of microorganisms. In the decomposition of a medium, some microorganisms macerate organic matter mechanically and remove certain constituents for their own nutrition; others decompose a large part of the organic matter but may leave certain constituents undecomposed. Some attack only certain specific ingredients of the organic matter. All of them build up cell substance. The nitrogen content of the medium largely determines the degree of decomposition. Below 1.7 per cent nitrogen, growth of microorganisms and hence decomposition of organic material is retarded; consequently organic material will accumulate.17,32 Such accumulations of organic material may give coal eventually. Coals differ in type and rank. The nature of the original vegetation and the conditions attending the transformation of the accumulated debris determine the type of coal such as bright, splint, cannel, and algal or boghead coals. This paper is one of a series comprising the Mineral Industries Survey of the United States, which was begun in 1935. It describes the simple methods of mining and beneficiating manganese ore, in eastern Tennessee and compares these methods with those used elsewhere in the Appalachian region. The report contains general information on manganese to give a clearer understanding of the methods and costs of mining and. beneficiating manganese ore foam a widespread deposit, an in addition presents zone difficulties normally fond in these operations. The marketing, uses, and value of manganese ore are discussed as well as the amount of capital necessary for effective operation on given scale of production, and requirements are outlines for successful operation of manganese, property in this region.

Design of the ultimate pit limit to direct long range mine planning has been a celebrated problem in the mining industry, and in mining academia, since 1965. Although many papers have been presented on this topic, even today, there is not a single solution technique which is widely accepted and considered universally best. Many philosophical differences exist among the pit planners concerning the use of different methods and it appears that resistance is very strong towards accepting other techniques if you are a believer in one. Whatever the case might be, the pit parameterization technique for the ultimate pit limit design is the latest and takes a different approach than its predecessors. There are already a number of papers which discuss the concepts involved (Francois-Bongarcon, 1976; 1978; 1980; 1981); however, the aim of this paper is to fill in some of the gaps which are thought to be missing in the previous discussions and, in addition, to present the recent research done on the subject at the Centre de Geostatistique de l?Ecole de Mines de Paris in Fontainbleau, France. This paper is divided into two parts. The first part will discuss practical aspects and interpretations of pit parameterization concepts with- out using mathematical or theoretical arguments; the reader who is interested in the theory should refer to Francois-Bongarcon (1978). The second part will present an approach to obtain a complete double parameterization of reserves using an inexpensive (computer costs) single parameterization algorithm. A case study of this approach is also included.

Flyash were melt mixed with nylon 6 at a 30wt% concentration. TYZOR® TPT, a coupling agent, was used to facilitate the link between filler and matrix. The morphological characterization, using SEM, revealed sufficient matrix residue on the filler surfaces thus confirming the strong interfacial bonding between the filler and the matrix on treating. Tensile, impact and the flexural properties of the composites were also improved with the incorporation of coupling agent. As flyash particles tend to impart a grayish color to the plastic, TiO2 pigment was employed to make the formulations aesthetic. The pigment was added to the filled system in 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 wt/wt ratios. Scattering of incident light and spectral reflectance was higher for smaller particle size flyash. Moreover an increase in the scattering with increase in pigment concentration indicates better dispersion of the pigment, which again is due to the presence of coupling agent.

It is often necessary for a mining company to extract coal from a seam underlying a previously mined coal seam. The impact of the overlying mine workings on the stress distribution within the underlying mine workings is very difficult to assess without the use of numerical modeling techniques. This paper demonstrates the usefulness of applying numerical modeling to evaluate alternate startup-room locations for a longwall panel considering the effects of multiple seam interaction. MULSIMIPC, a code adapted by the former U. S. Bureau of Mines, was used to compare stress patterns in two proposed startup-room locations. These model results were not only compared to each other, but also to results from a model with no overlying mine workings to provide baseline criteria for evaluation of the two proposed startup-room locations. The numerical modeling study was successful in providing useful information to the coal company and the regulatory agency (MSHA), resulting in a mine design that was both safe and efficient, and prevented the sterilization of a large volume of coal reserves.
