A brief résumé follows of activities of the Division of Coal-Mine Inspection that have had a favorable effect on health, safety, and the reduction of injuries at coal mines: 1. The Federal Mine Safety Code fur Bituminous Coal and Lignite Mines of the United States was issued originally by the Director of the Bureau of Mines on July 24, 1946, after consulting with management and labor representatives of the coal-mining industry. The code has been used by Federal coal-mine inspectors while inspecting bituminous-coal and lignite mines as a basis for determining the existence of unhealthful and unsafe conditions and practices in these mines. A revised code was issued by the Secretary of the Interior on October 8, 1953, after further consultations with representatives of management and mine workers and was incorporated by reference in the 1952 and subsequent bituminous -coal wage agreements. The agreement of May 29, 1946, between the Secretary of the Interior, acting as Coal Mines Administrator under authority of Executive Order 9728, and the United Mine Workers of America, covering bituminous-coal and lignite mines in Government possession, charged Federal coal-mine inspectors with the responsibility of making periodic investigations of the mines and reportin; to the Coal Mines Administrator any violations of the Federal Minis Safety Code. Federal coal-mine inspectors also had temporary authority to close mines found to be imminently dangerous, but such authority under Executive Order 9728 was removed on June 30, 1947, when Government control of the mines was terminated.

"There are a number of challenges involved with the surface analyses of different mineral phases from process streams in a flotation facility. The first of course is to collect samples that are representative of the process and to ensure that they remain in a pristine condition prior to introduction into the instrument. In mineral processing, sample collection from the different streams is done on site and preservation involves simply removing oxygen from the sample by bubbling nitrogen or argon gas through the sample and snap freezing with dry ice.The second challenge in studying the surface chemistry of specific minerals is to find reliable methods of mineral phase recognition. In surface analysis of mineral particles confident mineral selection can be difficult with many multi-metal minerals (e.g. chalcopyrite, pyrite, sphalerite) and with precipitated, adsorbed, reacted and contaminant species in the outermost molecular layers.In this paper we show that principal components analysis (PCA) of ToF-SIMS data provides improvement in phase recognition, particle selection and associated variations in surface species. We will demonstrate, with specific examples, that this technique can be utilized to differentiate surface chemical factors promoting (hydrophobic species) or inhibiting (hydrophilic species) flotation.Species recognition based on the PCA method in a study of Cu transfer between chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite mineral mixture clearly identified a statistical difference in copper intensities between the sphalerite and pyrite phases. A similar ToF-SIMS/PCA based study applied to concentrate and tails samples collected from the Inco Matte Concentrator demonstrated extensive CuOH and NiOH transfer between the chalcocite and heazlewoodite minerals. The statistical analysis has been able to confirm some mechanisms and deny others proposed to control recovery and selectivity giving more focus on the control factors.The ToF-SIMS PCA statistical analysis has elucidated differences in surface chemistries which illustrate the discriminating depressant action of adherent aluminosilicate (gangue) fine particles and adsorbed ions on the surface of sphalerite grains. In the flotation test concentrates, HIC conditioning resulted in the removal of these gangue fines thereby improving surface collector attachment efficiency, promoting a greater recovery of sphalerite."

Keywords: Complex Iron Ores, Roasting, Tin, Zinc, Pellets, Comprehensive Recovery. The complex iron ores containing tin, zinc are typical refractory ores. Large reserves of the ores are found in China and have not been utilized efficiently so far. A new process of tin and zinc recovery and pellet preparation from iron concentrate containing tin and zinc by controlled atmosphere roasting is developed in this investigation. The results of 2573 N/P compression strength of product pellets, the 91.49% and 82.22% volatilization of tin and zinc respectively, are achieved for a concentrate containing 0.39% tin and 0.28% zinc. The strength and chemical compositions of the pellets meet the requirement of blast furnace ironmaking. Volatilization mechanism of tin and zinc are investigated. Thermodynamic study shows that the reduction balance curves of SnO2(s) and SnO(g) are proximate in the presence of carbon, and the standard formation free enthalpy of FeO and SnO2 is also approachable. Therefore, it is difficult to realize the complete volatilization of tin in the form of SnO(g) by selective reduction. But SnO2(s) and SnO(g) will form SnCl4(g) or SnCl2(g) in the presence of chlorides and can be easily volatilized from the ores.

THE solidus line above the solid solution field in the lead-antimony system was originally determined by Dean and his associates1 from heating curves. They did not regard this line as having been accurately fixed and in their more recent publications2 the curves drawn do not follow closely the original data. The precise location of the solidus line is of importance in the extrusion of lead-antimony cable sheath, as the temperature of the metal in this process must be less than the lowest temperature at which any part of the alloy in the lead-press charge becomes liquid. It is very desirable, however, to operate at as high a temperature as possible, as the rate of extrusion for a given pressure is approximately doubled for an increase of 10" C. in temperature. The precise location of this line is also important in the investigation of ternary systems of lead, antimony and a third metal. For these reasons, and because of the differences reported in the literature, data were secured on the lead-antimony solidus line by the classical quenching-test procedure.

Suitable for carriers in the 29-to 43-t (32-to 47-st) weight class, the HB 2500 accepts maximum hydraulic flow of 219 L/min (58 gpm) at 18 MPa (2,610 psi) of pressure, and delivers an impact rate of up to 550 blows per minute. The HB 2500 features PowerAdapt, a new system that automatically shuts down the breaker in the event that it receives excessive oil pressure from the carrier.

"The rapid growth of the mining industry in Canada necessitates a reevaluation of existing mining surveying techniques and the development of new methods. In this connection, the Department of Surveying Engineering at the University of New Brunswick initiated a research program, and the major points of investigation conducted to date are as follows: 1. Based on practical experience and theoretical studies, all factors influencing classical shaft-plumbing procedures were analyzed. Refined methods were developed to increase accuracy. 2. The performance of electronic and optical distance-measuring instruments in underground conditions were investigated. In this connection, test measurements were made in various mines, employing four types of Tellurometers, two models of Geodimeters and a proto-type optical range-finder. 3. Tests were conducted and methods developed for the mapping of large underground chambers by photo-grammetric means. The aforementioned points are discussed at some length in the paper. The authors have also indicated areas where further research is needed and suggested ways and means to improve and modernize mining surveying as a whole throughout Canada."

The objective of this contract was to review the results of the Rushton Mining experiment in work organization and design, to explore the extension of knowledge gained from Rushton to other underground coal mines, and to conduct a search for a potential mine site for a demonstration project. The primary focus of the contract was on a search process to provide the research team with the opportunity to evaluate the different potential experimental sites, in order to select one or more with the highest potential for success. This search process also provides the various levels of union and company officials the opportunity to fully understand the context of the research before making a decision on whether to participate. While the search project failed in its attempt to locate a specific mine site, the research team believes that this is not a rejection of the actual project but rather extreme caution because of the uncertainty within the UMWA.

This report presents the results of a study of mill tailings disposal practices and potential tailings dam stability problems. Recognizing the long period of time that would be required to develop the technology and practices necessary to significantly improve refuse disposal safety, the Bureau initiated this research effort as a first step in that development. Volume 1 includes a summary of conclusions and recommendations resulting from the overall research effort; discussions of disposal systems and methods, geology, seismicity, hydrology, and materials characteristics; evaluations of investigational techniques; discussions of usable interim generalized investigational, analytical and inspection procedures; discussion of general principles and presentation of a tailings technology manual outline; and discussion of needed future research am recommended programs.

THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. "INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program again forged ahead during 1952, and important technical advances led the way to improved methods of converting coal and oil shale into liquid fuels. Marking the eighth year of activities under this program, the pact 32 months brought a new domestic industry nearer realization.The increasing demand for gasoline and oil and the rising cost of finding new petroleum, coupled with America's growing dependence on imports and the unsettled international situation, have continued to emphasize the importance of the Bureau's Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program. Oil, the indispensable material of wartime, likewise has critical importance in peacetime, touching as it does the life of every individual. Supplementing petroleum with synthetic liquid fuels will not only conserve this Nation's petroleum reserves but also will bring into greater use its tremendous reserves of coal, as well as the vast deposits of oil shale for which no other practical use has yet been found.The Bureau of Mines Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program is one of the most important and far-reaching of the Government's research projects. Through development of commercial synthetic liquid fuels, the United States can obtain oil products from its great inland reserves of coal and oil shale to supplement petroleum in any quantity that may be necessary, consistent with economic and other requirements, such as national defense. The use of raw materials from such deposits would be of highest importance in wartime, when shipping lanes are menaced by the enemy. The Synthetic Liquid Fuels Program of the Bureau of Mines and research efforts of industry have advanced. American technology to the point where it is now possible to begin the design and construction of prototype plants. Certainly, significant improvements will be made as the program continues, but this prospect in no way alters the fact that the start of prototype plants should be encouraged. Surveying of a bench face before blasting is a pre-requisite for a proper blast planning and for a satisfying blasting result both in terms of safety and fragmentation. When surveying a bench face, preferably a large amount of measurement points are required in order to determine the geometry and especially the irregularities with sufficient accuracy. Only contact-free measuring systems allow evenly distributed measurements over the whole bench surface. Existing systems such as total station, laser profiler, or laser scanner show significant drawbacks such as that surveying results are just isolated values of the bench geometry such as heights or profiles, that borehole positions have to be defined in advance in order to know where to take profile measurements and that systems require special surveying skills and that they are expensive too. In order to overcome these difficulties and to provide the blasters a simple tool for bench surveying, blast design and layout and the subsequent back-transfer of the blast plan into the quarry, the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering of the University of Leoben, 3G Software & Measurement company and Mineral AB, one of the largest producers of aggregates in Europe formed a joint venture to develop a new system. Based on an existing stereophotogrammetric system for rock surface surveying and joint analysis (JointMetrix), a new tool was developed within a year. Apart from several mines and quarries using that new tool already today in the daily work, both the Department of Mineral Resources& Petroleum Engineering at the University of Leoben and Austin Powder GmbH Blasting Service did a lot of studies to determine the reliability of the new stereophotogrammetric blast surveying and planning system and its precision in comparison to classical laser surveying equipment. After 1 year of testing and comparison with laser based surveying instruments, it can be concluded, that the new technology of blast surveying& design systems based on stereophotogrammetry is suitable for being used in the daily work routine in quarries and mines. The comparison of the precision of laser based systems and stereophotogrammetric systems has shown, that the deviation between these two types of systems is less than 10 cm, in many cases even lower.

"INTRODUCTION Shaft mines, coal and noncoal alike, have a common hoisting problem that remains largely unsolved - how to obtain a mechanical device that will suspend a cage or skip in a mine shaft if the hoisting rope should break or become detached from the cage or skip and that will function effectively under all conditions of service. Safety catches, or safety dogs, as they are commonly named, are installed on nearly all mine cages and many skips operating in American mines, but often, if the hoisting rope breaks, the cage or skip falls to the bottom of the shaft in spite of safety devices, causing much property damage and often fatalities.Available information relative to safety catches for mine cages and skips, desirable characteristics of safety catches and methods of testing safety catches to determine whether they are functioning correctly has been assembled in this publication for the convenience of those responsible for the safe operation of mine cages end skips and, more particularly, to focus attention on the need for a device that actually will stop and suspend a falling cage or skip under all conditions of use and do it without killing or maiming the occupants."

The small party of mining men who formed the original Mount Morgan Syndicate in 1882, commenced operations on the top of the mountain with what were practically nothing more than small hillside quarries, It was not until 1891 that underground stoping began, and open-cut mining therefore commenced with the commencement of operations. This hillside quarrying, however, seems to have been quite haphazard and unsystematic ; there is no trace or sign of any properly devised mining scheme. This can be seen plainly enough from an examination of old mine plans; for in less than five years after stoping was; adopted, the open-cut was down into the stoped-out ground. The following table, prepared from these old plans, shows the downward trend of the excavation in the past fiftyseven years:-

The Air Force Weapons Laboratory (AFWL) has been carrying out a series of experiments whose principal purpose is to measure the dynamic response of rock media to large pressure pulses. Coupled with the field experiments have been theoretical calculations simulating this response. These two approaches allow an appraisal of the current ability to measure in-situ rock response under extreme conditions and also give a fair estimate of the current state-of-the-art in the area of computer calculation of the response of "real" geologic media to a large load. The area chosen for the test series is composed of a sequence of sedimentary units (shale, sandstone, and limestone) located in the Estancia Valley 45 miles east of Albuquerque, N.M. (Fig. 1). The units, which dip gently off the uplifted Manzano Mountains to the west, are essentially horizontal at the test site. An extensive geologic and geophysical investigation of the area was carried out in the form of surface mapping and seismic exploration. Numerous holes were cored and material properties were determined from tests of the cores. In-situ geophysical measure¬ments were also carried out. The experiment consisted of loading a 60X40 ft test area with a 4000-psi transient exponentially decaying pressure pulse. The pulse was initiated at one end and traveled the 60-ft length of the test bed. The test area was instrumented with acceleration, velocity, and strain measuring devices placed in drill holes to depths of 30 ft. "In many volcanogenic base metal deposits of Russia the gold is closely associated with copper sulphides and pyrite. The recovery of gold associated with pyrite is especially difficult problem.Investigations of gold chemical state and mineral forms in copper-zinc sulphide ores of Gay and Barsuchiy Log deposits in the Urals have been made using EPMA, optic image-analysis, XRA, SEM, thermo-electrical force measurements and selective gold leaching experiments.Two gold varieties are determined: 1) free native gold particles (from 5 µm up to 0,25-1,0 mm), which can be liberated after grinding of ore up to 0,074 µm and named “free gold”; 2)”invisible” gold, including finely disseminated native gold and chemically bound gold. The second variety can’t be disclosed during grinding. Free gold can be recovered by gravitation and flotation while the processing behaviour of “invisible” gold is determined by properties of gold-bearing sulphides: pyrite and chalcopyrite. According to results of diagnostic leaching experiments in ores of deposits mentioned above the part by weight of free gold reaches 70%, the part by weight of the ”invisible” gold is up to 20%. About 10% of gold is enclosed in quartz and acid-soluble minerals.Theoretically (taking into account gold distribution data) it’s may anticipate gold recovery by gravitation up to 60%. However after grinding up to 50-60% of class –0,074 mm only about 40% of gold passes into oversize product including 30% of free gold and 8% of ”invisible” one. It can be recovered by gravitation. Remaining free gold and ”invisible” gold can be extracted by flotation – 25% in total. Inevitable gold losses in tailings may reach 8-10%."

Pyrometallurgical furnaces, essential for metal extraction, operate at temperatures exceeding 1600°C and represent complex multiphase systems that challenge direct industrial research. Multiphysics models play a key role in shedding light on their intricate behaviours, supporting the refinement of design and operational strategies. Integral to the operation are the tap-holes, which facilitate the removal of molten products and are routinely opened by lancing, a process comparable to the use of a cutting torch, where high temperatures result from oxygen reacting with an iron lance. When the lance pierces the clay, oxygen gas enters the furnace, which could influence the behaviour of the molten material inside. In this work, a multiphase fluid flow model was used to investigate bulk flow dynamics, with a focus on the effects of the lancing process on the inside of the furnace, immediately behind the tap-hole. Incompressible and compressible multiphase fluid solvers were used and compared with respect their performance – the intention was to assess whether using a compressible solver would yield a different solution to the incompressible one. It was concluded that there are negligible disparities in bulk fluid flow behaviour between the solvers for the case studies examined, indicating that solver selection might be less consequential for certain aspects of oxygen lancing.

"INTRODUCTION The United States, although the leading consumer of chromite, depends almost entirely on imports for its supply. For instance, the consumption during. 1941 amounted to 714,645 long tons, whereas the domestic chromite production, although the highest since 1918, was 12,731 long tons or only 1.78 percent of the domestic consumption. 9/ Domestic production was tremendously, accelerated,after 1941 by war demands; however, only a small proportion of this domestic product was of sufficient quality to be substituted for the high-grade imported chromite demanded for metallurgical purpose. Chromite is used largely for making ferrochromium, an alloy containing 60 to 70 percent chromium which is used in making alloy steels. Peacetime specification for ferrochromium required that it should contain 68 to 69 percent chromium. These specification were lowered to between 60 and 63 percent, chromium in 1941 to permit the use of lower-grade ores. The specifications for metallurgical chromite, used for making ferrochromium, were established first by the Metals Reserve Company at 48 percent Cr203 and a Cr. Fe. ratio of 3 : 1 but later were lowered to 45 percent Cr203 and a Cr : Fe ratio of 2.5 : 1. The ratio of chromium to iron in chromite is important, because the contained iron enters the alloy in making ferrochromium and, although an ore may contain the required 45 percent Cr203, it may contain too much to be suitable for ferrochromium production. The principal sources of domestic chromite are California, Oregon, Montana, and Alaska minor, small, and widely scattered deposits in another dozen States. Without exception, these deposits are low-grade, require beneficiation to produce a commercial product, and are not competitive with imported high-grade ore in normal times. Nevertheless, these deposits form strategic reserve, which must be utilized in periods of national emergency. Recognizing this fact; the Bureau of Mines for many years has undertaken investigations to develop methods of utilizing domestic chromite ores. The problem has been approached from three angles: (1) Mechanical methods of concentration; (2) beneficiation by chemical or metal¬lurgical methods; and (3) production of metallic chromium by electrolysis of solutions prepared from ore or concentrate."

As openpit copper operations transition from surface mines to underground, the speed of underground infrastructure construction prior to production is critical for maximizing the value of the project. Typically, the preferred underground bulk mining method is block caving. In preparation for future underground projects, Rio Tinto made the strategic decision to invest in a step-change program that would develop system solutions to reduce the construction time of block caves. The program focused on improving safety and doubling or more the construction speed of both vertical shafts and horizontal infrastructure compared to existing drill-and-blast rates. After an extensive selection process, Rio Tinto selected the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine as one of the concepts to proceed with for construction of horizontal infrastructure for access and footprint. In addition to un-derground drilling and hauling equipment, Atlas Copco?s Robbins mobile miner concept (a previous attempt at horizontal mechanical excavation) completed trials at Mount Isa, Pasminco and Taisei. Rio Tinto selected the new Atlas Copco mobile miner machine concept for a number of reasons including the use of proven technology from the three previous mobile miner machines and other commercial products, as well as the ability to install complete ground support typical with high rock stress conditions at approximately 1,500 to 2,000 m (4,900 to 6,500 ft) depth. Atlas Copco, with support from Rowa, the Swiss company that specializes in back up systems for tunnel boring machines (TBM), is advancing the detail design of the access version of a tunneling system on behalf of Rio Tinto. Because of the different requirements between an excavation system for access tunnels and that for tunnels on the footprint, two different versions of the mobile miner machine technology were envisioned. The access and the footprint versions of the Atlas Copco mobile miner machine share a majority of key technologies and systems. Therefore, it was possible to conduct a performance conformation test using a full-scale version of the access machine that would also mitigate the technical risks for the footprint version. "An autogenous grinding circuit was commissioned at the Brunswick concentrator in October 1998. The autogenous grinding circuit replaced existing surface crushing plants, fine ore storage, rod and primary ball mills. The 8.54m diameter x 4.27m long (EGL) AN1 mill is driven by a bidirectional variable speed 6.3MW ABB wound rotor motor with Slip Energy Recovery (SER) drive. The AG mill was subsequently converted to SAG operation in May 1999 for a number of reasons. The mill is operated in closed circuit with horizontally inclined 660mm diameter cyclones to produce a circuit product P80 of 85 microns. Extensive test work and JKSimMet design modeling resulted in a production circuit operating closely within design expectations.The circuit is highly instrumented and controlled via a hybrid Programmable Logic Controller (PLC-5) and Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) that is in communication with the property information highway. An expert control system (Gensym G2) is used for control of the SAG mill load.Engineering and construction were completed in 28 months from the time of management approval for the project. The Brunswick AG/SAG mill circuit was commissioned on schedule at the $M 23.5 forecast budget."
