INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. To pelletize fine moist magnetite concentrate, a 40% water slurry must be dewatered to about 10% by filtration, before it can be agglomerated into pellets. Slurry pH, typically ranging from 8 to 11, gives the magnetite particle surface a strong negative charge and thus causes two adverse effects. First, this negative charge attracts calcium and magnesium cations, which strongly retard the effectiveness of the bentonite clay binder added during agglomeration. Second, a repulsive force created by the negative charge functions as a dispersant that reduces filtering production rates. Tests were conducted to remove these cations during filtration, by rinsing the moisture remaining in the filter cake with a small amount of water adjusted to pH 6 with HCl. Laboratory work was also conducted at Michigan Technological University (MTU) and at Cliff’s Mining Services Company (CMSC) to corroborate the plant tests. In some cases HCl caused filter bag blinding, therefore CO2was investigated to reduce pH. The CMSC lab tests showed that using carbon dioxide to reduce slurry pH from 7.6 to 7.0 improved filtering production rates by 11%. Plant-scale filtering rates were improved by 23.7% when carbon dioxide addition reduced the slurry pH from 8.6 to 6.7.

Naumannite (Ag,Se), a silver selenide mineral, was first discovered in 1828. This study investigates the structure, morphology, chemical composition, and leaching kinetics of naumannite. Mechanical activation in a planetary ball mill increased its specific surface area, enhancing the leaching rate of silver in nitric acid (HNO3). The study found that mechanical activation significantly improves silver recovery.

Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian) coals of certain areas of the Illinois and Forest City Basins contain epigenetic sphalerite and associated minerals in veins, clastic dikes, cleat, and other small-scale structural features. The presence of sphalerite in these coals records information about the geology of coals and coal basins, and represents a potential source for zinc as a byproduct of coal production. Origin of Sphalerite in Coal The origin of sphalerite in coal suggested by Cobb (1) involves sphalerite precipitation from zinc-bearing ?Na-Ca-Cl brines upon contact with sources of sulfur in the coal bed, e.g., pyrite, H2S, and organic sulfur. These brines were essentially at the temperature of the host coals as determined by fluid-inclusion thermometry and vitrinite-reflectance studies. The migration of these brines into coal beds may have been caused by compaction of sediments due to continued sediment loading of the coal basins. Zones of high permeability such as sandstones and the coals themselves presumably acted as conduits for the movement of the brines. The open spaces where sphalerite was deposited resulted from minor deformation associated with differential compaction and cleat formation enhanced by volume shrinkage during coalification.

Liberation size can be estimated using various techniques such as grain counting, frequency curves, X-ray intensity and the mesh of grind. The present investigation deals with the estimation of the liberation size of graphite flake contained in a schistose ore from Shivaganga, India. It was observed that the flakes are liberated at from 75 to 150µm. The rougher flotation concentrate obtained after grinding the run-of-mine ore for 5 min contained 54% fixed carbon. This represented the first stage of liberation. After regrinding to <90 µm in the presence of sodium silicate and guar gum, a cleaner concentrate containing 82% fixed carbon was obtained.

Modern mechanical raise drilling was first introduced into the United states in 1962. This method of safely, economically raising a shaft has steadily increased in popularity since that time. This steady growth has been largely enhanced by the many advantages to be gained by mechanical raise drilling, as well as by the increasing reliability of the equipment required. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly review the state of the art of raise drilling to include: the various applications and advantages; the equipment requirements, including a comparison of the various types and sizes of machines and rock cutting equipment; equipment performance; and future trends.

Heap biooxidation is an economical means to treat refractory sulfidic ores. However, air flow limitations are a major obstacle in commercialization of this technology. Geobiotics, Inc. has developed a new process for heap biooxidation of sulfide ores that renders the ore more susceptible to bacterial oxidation. In this process, air and liquid flows in the heap are greatly improved by first removing clays and other fine particles from the ore. Gold bearing sulfides are recovered from the removed fines and separately biooxidized. Column biooxidations were conducted on two refractory sulfidic ores from which the fines had been removed in order to improve air flow through the column. Gold recoveries increased from 46% to 90% for a mill grade ore and from 52% to 80% for a low grade ore after biooxidation. Fines and clays in these ores had precluded whole ore heap biooxidation from occurring. This new process addresses the most significant problem of large scale heap biooxidation.

INTRODUCTION The Wyodak Mine is located in the northern Powder River Basin of Wyoming and is thought to be the oldest continuously operating coal mine in the United States, having recorded yearly production since 1923. The mine has expanded over its 80-plus-year history from an underground room and pillar operation to a modem surface snip mine. Currently, the mine feeds four on-site power plants using conveyors, has a filly automated truck load-out, and ships coal by rail to nearby Wyoming power plants. Annual production of 4.8 MTFT is accomplished on a single-shift basis with 53 fill-time production, maintenance and administrative personnel. In 1990 a decision was made to modernize the coal feed system to the power plant complex with modular conveying equipment. The project involved constructing coal storage silos, overland conveyors, feeder breakers and modular conveyors to follow the mining benches. Total project cost in excess of $25 million was used to construe or commission: A 2,150-TPH 48-inch overland conveyor with horizontal curve A 2,150-TPH 48-inch plant feed conveyor 13 shuttle conveyors, each 150 feet in length 2 front-end loaders equipped with large coal buckets 2 crawler-mounted feeder breakers with compatible discharge conveyor 1 high-lift shuttle conveyor with adjustable discharge height 1 high-angle conveyor 2 4,500-ton coal silos with automated truck load- out capabilities. Conceptually, the plan was to develop 33 MTONS of reserve adjacent to the plant complex and use front-end loaders to tram ROM coal to in-pit feeder breakers. The primary crushing would reduce coal to 6-inch minus and feed through a series of shuttle conveyors to an overland supply conveyor. The overland conveyor would feed the secondary crusher, and the crushed product would be moved to any of four storage silos using conveyors. The in-pit crushing and conveying system is a unique fit for the power plants and provided many interesting challenges for the coal mine to overcome. System integration, maintenance windows, equipment availability and the like had a major role in engineering the system to a power plant complex having no emergency coal stock- pile and limited plant storage. In crediting the designers and operators, the in-pit conveying system at the Wyodak Mine has delivered coal to the power generators since 1994 with little or no downtime. ENGINEERING CONSIDERATIONS Yearly production for the mine is based on 3.5 MTPY which requires about 1,550 TPH on an 8 hour, one-shift- per-day, 5-days-per-week basis. Considering efficiencies for starting and stopping, crew transport, loader trams, and operational delays, a nominal conveyor feed rate of 2,150 TPH or 72% system utilization was used in engineering design application. This ton-per-hour basis is used to size and commission the remaining components of the in-pit system. Coal quality requirements also played a role in equipment selection. The mine reserve grades vertically and coal from Upper and Lower benches needed to be mixed in any given proportion. This required equipment to be filly variable and capable of producing all or part of the 2,150-ton-per-hour requirement. Bisecting the 80-foot- high coal face for quality required construction of a high lift module capable of reaching a single overland conveyor 40 to 50 feet above the pit floor. Designers built a high-lift, adjustable and portable module specific for this application Having two bench systems capable of each producing the required feed for the power plants required computerized control processes to control on-line production. RSLinx, RSLogix, and RSView were chosen as the communication and control software, and a Data Highway Plus serves as the communication backbone. Yield pillars are used in deep coal longwall mines, where the depth of cover is so great that a conventional chain pillar design tends to be unsuccessful. The design of yield pillars in deep U.S. mines has been based mainly on experience, pressure arch theories, numerical modeling, and empirical methods that originated in the eastern U.S. coal mines. This paper offers field experience based guidelines for the design of yield pillars through analysis and evaluation of numerous case histories. Case histories of yield pillar applications were collated and critically reviewed to identify trends in data that can be used to formulate the design guidelines. Convincing trends observed in the case of successful case histories indicate that yield pillars should have a width to height ratio in the range from 2.8 to 6.0, a stability factor during development between 0.4 and 0.6, and shed between 94% to 98% of the cover and abutment load, as provided by the Carr-Wilson (1982) method. Also, yield pillars should be utilized in coalmines only where the roof and floor rock have a CMRR rating of 50 or better.

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery applications are increasing for battery-powered vehicles because of their high energy density and expected long cycle life. With the development of battery-powered vehicles, fire and explosion hazards associated with lithium-ion batteries are a safety issue that needs to be addressed. Li-ion batteries can go through a thermal runaway under different abuse conditions, including thermal, mechanical and electrical abuse, leading to a fire or explosion. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) mining program is conducting research to prevent and respond to lithium-ion battery fires in battery-electric vehicles in the mining industry. In this study, experiments were conducted to investigate the effectiveness of different suppression systems including dry chemical, Class D extinguishing powder and water mist for lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack fires. The effects of activation time and release time of the water-mist system on the suppression of the LFP battery (a type of Li-ion battery) fires were studied. The results of this study may be helpful for developing strategic firefighting and response plans for battery-powered vehicles used in mining.

This paper contains the geometallurgical studies, performed for Mineração Rio do Norte bauxites, applied to a selected area belonging to Plateau Saracá III, referring to an exploitation period of one year and three months, approximately. It is worth mentioning that Mineração Rio do Norte has the biggest bauxite operation in Brazil producing 8,500,000 tons of concentrate per year. The studies included wide investigations directed to the final objective of establishing a precise mining and production planning, based on the different behavior of the distinct bauxite ores, when submitted to industrial processes. Geometallurgy can be defined as the study of the regionalization (space distribution) of the metallurgical variables of a mineral deposit. This study involves and integrates all process engineering, geology, geostatistics and mining planning, among others. The development and application of the geometallugical studies to Mineração Rio do Norte were motivated by several reasons and necessities, among them: 1. Improving the forecast of the amount of concentrate (metallurgical mass yield) produced; 2. Improving the equipment operational efficiency, providing a more homogeneous feed; 3. Conducting a more precise material balance that permits a better daily, monthly and yearly production control; 4. Improving the forecasts for the final products generated by each ore type; 5. Obtaining better knowledge of the behavior of several ore types, submitted to the different process unit operations; 6. Promoting adequate ore blending, producing an homogeneous feed during mining operation.

"INTRODUCTION Anadarko Petroleum Corporation (Anadarko) owns a region of oil shale properties acquired as part of the original Union Pacific Land Grant of the 1800’s in southern Wyoming. These holdings are greater than 2 million acres and occur throughout the Green River Formation in southwestern Wyoming. One area was prioritized for further study by Anadarko Minerals called the Kinney Rim in the Washakie Basin due to low environmental impact, proximity to infrastructure, high ore grade, and low mining cost. The area is a low-overburden oil shale resource that can be developed using surface mining methods, processed by conventional surface retort, and placing waste rock disposal back on the bench for a design capacity of 10,000 barrel per day. The purpose of this papers is to present the results of environmental analysis and timeline, the mine plan, and surface ore processing to offer a resource-ready energy source.Mineral rights for the Kinney Rim area are owned by Anadarko, the United States Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the State of Wyoming. Mining of oil shale for this study targets Anadarko owned mineral resources.GEOLOGY The study area is in the Green River and Washakie Basins in western Wyoming. The host geologic member is the Laney Oil Shale. Figure 2 illustrates the Laney shale within a generalized lithologic cross section.OIL SHALE LEASING The proposed Kinney Rim oil shale mining project is located in an area dominated by a 1 square mile checkerboard landownership pattern with every other section typically administered by Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Anadarko. Surface and mineral ownership is a split estate legal entity. The immediate Kinney Rim mine plan is all on Anadarko sections."

Case Studies in Open Pit Design Using Whittle 4D will be discussing the following four examples: 1) Optimization of process plant design using Whittle 4D as a sizing tool. In this case, the home office and project team had different views of the size of the final project. The home office wanted to reduce the size of the project to reduce capital expenditure, while the project team suggested a larger project. Whittle 4D was used to determine Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return using the Whittle scheduler (FDAN) to schedule many alternatives, and calculate the NPV and return for each alternative. 2) Comparison of pit optimization methods: Lerchs-Grossman vs floating cone. Many pits are developed based on floating cone economics. A comparison of methods in one large gold mine resulted in the stripping ratio of the pit being reduced by 10% in the Whittle 4D optimization as compared to the floating cone optimization. 3) Pit optimization to determine if a new mill is justified. A large heap leach gold and silver mine needed to determine if a new mill was justified. The planning and scheduling would take several man months if completed without pit optimization and scheduling software. Whittle 4D software proved to be very effective in providing optimized pits and a mine schedule in a short time frame. 4) Pit optimization to determine how to mine and size. Open pit optimization determined where the underground operation should start, and whether the material should be processed by milling or heap leaching. One of our clients asked for help in determining where the pit should end and a new underground operation start. We used Whittle 4D to help determine where the pit should end and where to go underground. In addition the operation needed to determine how to process the material.

The Castle Mountain Mine (CMM) is located in the eastern por­tion of San Bernardino County, Southern California, 70 miles south of Las Vegas. The CMM is a joint venture between Viceroy Gold Corp. (75% and operator) and MK Gold (25%). The CMM initially started gold production with an 8,000 tpd cyanide heap leach operation in February, 1992 when the first ore was crushed and delivered to the leach pads. Even during construction and commissioning, design work was under way to engineer and construct a 1,200 tpd Mill circuit to process the higher grade fraction of the ore through use of pulp agglomera­tion. The need for a grinding circuit became evident with the quantity of high grade material delineated during drilling and the amount of visible gold that the geologists were finding in the drill core and R.C. cuttings. Viceroy did not want to stack the higher grade ore on the heap, and it was clear that permitting a tailings pond would, at best, be a long drawn-out affair. An alternative to a tailings facility had to be found.

Introduction United States Steel Corporation&apos;s, Texas Uranium Operations operates in-situ mines located approximately 70 miles north of Corpus Christi near the town of George West in Live Oak County, Texas. In 1977, Texas Uranium Operations became the operating entity for the Burns Ranch mines 100% United States Steel ownership and also operates the Clay West mines a 50150 joint venture of United States Steel Corporation and N M Uranium, Inc. Until mid-1982, Texas Uranium operated eight (8) satellites where uranium was captured on resin and two central plants where the loaded resin was eluted, acidized, precipitated and dried to yellowcake. At present, the Clay West Central Plant is operating, as are four (4) satellite plants in a mode designed to optimize results while depleting remaining reserves. United States Steel&apos;s Texas Uranium Operations, as have some other uranium producers, managed to continue successful production during the plunge to the recent floor price of $17. Despite the fact that United States Steel does not intend to continue as--a uranium producer beyond the life of its present reserves, we naturally hope the recent trend to the pre- sent price of $24 will continue to increase.

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. As indicated in the introduction to this paper, it is a sequel to that which I gave to the last annual meeting in Atlanta in march. This paper goes further into aspects of crushing and screening, primarily from the standpoint of circuit control. There has been little published by equipment manufacturers on this subject and this is the first paper on crushing circuit control to be sponsored by Allis-Chalmers corporation. By proper control over the use of crushing energy, we will be able to produce finished products from feed materials uti¬lizing minimum capital for the lowest cost of production. The subject will be discussed as follows. Firstly, we will look briefly at what we are trying to accomplish; Secondly, what is presently available in the way of technology; Thirdly, we will look at a suggested new system of control which will best fit the parameters of the normal crushing and screening operation; As a conclusion, I will summarize the advantages of the new system.

Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and ground falls, pose critical risks to underground mine safety and productivity. Today, monitoring of such failures is primarily conducted using legacy techniques with low spatial and temporal resolution while exposing workers to hazardous environments. This study assesses the potential of novel simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM)-based light detection and ranging (lidar) data quality for rapid, digital and, eventually, autonomous minewide underground geotechnical monitoring. We derive a comprehensive suite of quality metrics based on tests in two underground mines for two state-of-the-art mobile laser scanning (MLS) systems. Our results provide evidence that SLAM-based MLS systems provide data of the quality required to detect geotechnically relevant changes while being significantly more efficient for large mine layouts when compared to traditional static systems. Additionally, we show that SLAM-specific processing can achieve an order of magnitude better relative accuracy relevant for change detection than quality metrics derived from traditionally deployed tests would suggest, while reducing SLAM-drift error by up to 90 percent. In collaboration with an operating block-caving mine, we confirm these capabilities in field tests on a minewide scale and, for the first time, demonstrate methods of rockfall detection using MLS data. While more work is required to investigate optimal collection, processing and utilization of MLS data, we demonstrate its potential to become an effective and widely applicable data source for rapid, accurate and comprehensive geotechnical inspections.

INTRODUCTION In this section, it is assumed that the reader is an engineer with sufficient training in underground mining work, preferably with budgetary control, to understand the mining methods outlined in other sections of this handbook. The mining-method descriptions are not repeated herein; only sufficient information is provided to enable the reader to comprehend the development of the costs presented. All costs are in 1977 US dollars, except where explicitly stated otherwise. CAPITAL INVESTMENT The capital investment in the underground mining portion of any mining property includes the following: 1) The development of original access involving adits, shafts, declines, etc. It includes the necessary equipment for transporting men, materials, and rock. 2) The purchase of mine equipment including loaders, underground haulage equipment, fans, pumps, electrical distribution, surface facilities associated with the underground mine, etc. 3) Sufficient preproduction mine development to assure steadily increasing production after startup. De- pending upon the mining method used, the preproduction development should provide a supply of three months to one year of ore that is developed and is ready to be stoped. Underground development also includes excavations other than shaft stations, loading pockets, sumps, etc., which usually are associated with the means of access and are excavated by the contractor. These excavations could include a crusher cavern, an ore- storage pocket, and underground workshops that may or may not be included by the shaft-sinking contractor. Original Access As part of a study for the US Bureau of Mines, Dravo Corp. conducted an extensive literature research survey covering underground operations in the United States between 1963 and 1973. Table 1 is compiled from the section of that study pertaining to the types of access to underground mines. Table 1 does not include distances attributable to the deepening of existing shafts, nor does it include shafts bored by raise drills or downhole machines that need existing underground workings for the disposal of the cuttings. During the period under review in the report ( 1963 through 1973). concrete-lined circular vertical shafts were the predominant means of providing the first access to a new underground mine; these shafts accounted for 80% of the original access in terms of the number of accesses completed, and 75% in terms of the total verti- cal linear distances.
