"The wash ore area on the Mesabi iron range covers a regionof the iron bearing formation extending from Grand Rapids on the west to the Hibbing district, about forty miles eastward. Not all of the developed ore bodies are of wash structure; some are of such grades that they can be shipped direct as merchants able ore. It is safe to say, however, that 65 per cent of the ore is of a possible wash structure and of too high a silica content to be classified as merchantable ore. The increase in the number of washing plants completed each year on the western Mesabi shows that ,the product must be of a structure desirable for furnace operation. This paper presents some results obtained from research on long-term subsidence over and near chain pillar systems - the area available to long-term subsidence in longwall operations. Although the long-term subsidence for most longwall operations is insignificant, it does exist in some cases. In the cases that showed significant long-term subsidence, it was found that the development process could be expressed by an exponential decaying function. The stability factor of the chain pillar system and the potential for long-term subsidence are the two most important factors that control the magnitude and development characteristics of the long-term subsidence process.

One of the major operating costs for any labor-intensive operation is that of its employees' wage and benefits package. Today's packages are extremely complex, with multiple pay rates for different grades and shifts, intricate bonus criteria, and expansive benefit packages that include all sorts of medical, dental, pension and other costs that can be "hidden" from direct examination and consideration. The problems of estimating the total cost of such a package to a company becomes even more acute at negotiation time, when pressure from both sides to settle intensify and changes to package offers come rapidly. A comprehensive system is needed that can evaluate these costs and perform sensitivity analyses, on the various components of an agreement so as to aid in the solving of major labor deadlocks, productivity problems, and cost impacts created by those agreements.

The effect of various constituents on the pyrolysis and combustion of a pulverized coal in an entrained-flow reactor has been inves¬tigated. Predicted time-temperature histories of the coal' particles and experimental weight loss data indicate a strong coupling of heat and mass transfer to the pyrolysis and combustion rates. A higher combustion rate following ignition was observed as particle size was increased to 112 µm. This is related to a higher particle temperature after ignition for the larger particles. Although the heating rate prior to ignition decreases with increasing particle size, higher slip velocities and surrounding gas temperatures for the larger particles promote early ignition. The presence of liptinite in the coal increases the weight loss rate before and immediately after ignition. Similar behavior was observed for pyrolysis. Fractions of a HVA bituminous coal which were rich in mineral matter or semi-fusinite were found to have a higher heterogeneous char combustion rate than vitrinite rich samples.

ERIC GUTIERREZ, Knowledgescape: Our next speaker is Randy Ynchausti. He's the director of development, Knowledgescape systems division, of EIMCO Process Equip- ment Company. The title of Randy's talk is "An Expert Control System for Phosphate Beneficiation." RANDY YNCHAUSTI: System integration. How does the systems integrator survive when caught between plant engineers, plant management, and third-party engineering firms, and stay within the budget of the corporate goals? I'm not sure that anyone knows how to do all of that on one project. Results are critical when we talk about how systems integrators work with operating people, how the operating people want systems integrators to work with them, and how both groups work together so that at the end of a project, you have been provided with solutions that meet your needs and solve your problems at a fair price. How does the integrator's role change when working with different types of professionals, such as plant managers, plant engineers, engineering firms, or other system integrators? Finally, what is the dynamics of people working with machines and providing services and solving needs? The average number of employees per pound of copper processed has decreased significantly during the past 15 years. I would dare to generalize and say that the average number of employees per whatever unit of measure we have in whatever industry we work in has decreased over the last 15 years. From a system integrator's perspective, there are some clients who lack a bit of internal expertise as corporate downsizing occurs, and that's one reason why we go out to system integrators or third-party vendors and buy things from them to solve our problems. Downsizing really amounts to savings, but more than that, I think Brian expressed this and I agree with him, it also amounts to a cost. Unfortunately, most of us count the savings and none of us count the cost in that approach. It's easy to count the savings, which is one reason why we count it so quickly. Maybe that also accounts for why we set our pencils down so quickly after we get that dollar value. Maybe we should pick that pencil up every once in awhile and refigure the expense, the cost to us, and determine what we're going to pay during the next year or two or three in losing that expense, or that staff. Calcium carbonate is one of the highest volume industrial mineral products in North America. It is used in filler and extender applications, roofing products, floor tile, glass manufacture, etc. Calcium carbonate has over a dozen major filler and extender applications plus a host of minor uses. North American consumption of calcium carbonate fillers and extenders in 1991 is estimated at over 5,000,000 tons valued in excess of $400,000,000. There were five major suppliers of calcium carbonate fillers in the Middle Atlantic region in 1988 :?Bestone, Genstar, National Gypsum, Thomasville Stone and Lime, and White Pigment. With the exception of Genstar's Maryland operation, all of these operations are within a few miles of York, Pennsylvania. The Millington Group (TMG) purchased the assets of Bestone Corporation in February of 1989. TMG then seized the opportunity to strengthen its business position by acquiring National Gypsum's and White Pigment's Pennsylvania filler businesses in December, 1989 and July, 1990, respectively. By July of 1990 TMG's filler business acquisitions included six quarries and one underground mine, totaling over 1,200 acres and three processing facilities. The assets were restructured into two new companies - Delta Carbonate, Inc. and Penroc, Inc. (hereafter collectively referred to as Delta). Delta identified the assets of the three predecessor companies as undervalued from the outset. The initial phase of Delta's turnaround strategy was to reassess the combined mineral. mining, processing, transportation and marketing assets. The second phase was to effectively integrate these resources in order to exploit their inherent synergy.

Asset Maintenance Readiness (AMR) provides a tailored reliability and maintenance strategy specific to operational needs. AMR delivers reliability and maintenance foundations for the plant and equipment before start-up. Having a dependable reliability and maintenance strategy before start-up is critical, particularly in those first weeks and months during ramp up to stable production. The Asset Maintenance Readiness is the integration of Reliability and Maintenance Engineering analysis/studies at the earliest stages of the new Production System concept and design and during the Capital Project CapEx phases; adding this analysis to the Capital Project CAPEX cost, will have an impact of 2% to 3% of total project cost, but will deliver a good compendium of benefits far from the AMR costs, and those results will be shown upon commissioning and during the life cycle of the plant.

Underground construction environments, especially those with limited airflow such as shafts, cross passages, and stations, necessitate effective dust control. This requires combining existing measures with adapted approaches for more efficient and productive operations, cleaner jobsites, and decreased worker exposure to contaminated air. This paper will discuss new configurations and trends in dust collection on Australasian infrastructure projects including WestConnex, Melbourne Metro Tunnel and City Rail Link, all of which have applied innovative methodologies for mobile at-source dust collection. Mobile dust collectors can be track-mounted dust collectors operate alongside equipment, use hydraulic stepping systems to advance with roadheaders, or compact castor-mounted units are used within cross passage confines.

The in situ elastic moduli of rock are measured holographically by a borehole instrument in marble and oil shale. A point force induced displacement field is recorded with double expo- sure holography. Data consists of a fringe pat- tern on the viewed hologram. The elastic moduli are determined by modelling of the fringe pattern. Only Young's inodulus is fairly constrained by the present data reduction. For an applied force of 520 [ ] 50 Newtons, a marble was found to have a Young's modulus of 56 [ ] 8 GPa, near an ultrasonically determined value of 48 [ ] 6 GPa. "INTRODUCTION In carbonate rocks, it is difficult to characterize due to the high degree of heterogeneity in pore geometry. Carbonate rocks have various types of pore systems such as fractures and vugs, and this heterogeneity should be considered for more realistic prediction of oil production in carbonate reservoirs. This study carried out water flooding experiments using five carbonate rock samples in order to observe the change of physical properties. Firstly, qualitative and quantitative analyses were conducted for each carbonate samples by use of XRD and XRF to evaluate the mineral content. All samples are mainly composed of CaCO3 and after that, the ICP experiments were carried out for the water passing through the carbonate. As a result, it was possible to measure the quantity of CaCO3, MgO, Fe2O3 component in water and due to this effect, the permeability of carbonate was altered especially in the front part of the core. Finally, after the carbonate was saturated by 30 API crude oil, water injection to enhance the oil recovery was repeated and it was confirmed that the oil-producing characteristics are different depending on the dissolution characteristics of carbonate rock samples. CORE SAMPLE ANALYSIS Porosity and Permeability Experiment Porosity and permeability were measured. The procedures are as follows (Figure 1). 1. Measure the diameter and length of the dry core using Vernier caliper. 2. Put the core in the core holder, run vacuum pump until the inlet and outlet pressure gauge equal. 3. Saturate the core using ISCO pump to inject water at 650 psi 4. Measure the amount of water and calculate the porosity 5. Set up the outlet pressure at 500 psi. 6. The flow rate measure when the equilibrium 7. Calculate the permeability through Darcy’s Law. 8. Cutting of core upstream and downstream about 13cm, and measure the each of permeability."

The Päijänne Tunnel is being constructed to conduct raw water from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The length of the tunnel will be 120 km and the cross-sectional area is 15.5 sq m. Excavation started in 1973 and will be completed in 1982. 94 km of the tunnel have been constructed from Lake Päijänne towards Helsinki. The construction has advanced according to plan, and due to Finland's hard bedrock there have not been any great surprises. When completed, the tunnel will meet the water requirements of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area for a long time in the future because, with a free fall of 36 m, 9.6 cu m/s of water can be conducted through the tunnel from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Area. With pumping it will be possible to obtain a flow of 15 cu m/s, although at first the discharge will only be 5 cu m/s. The tunnel was partly taken into service as early as March 1979 when it was possible to conduct water to the municipalities north of the Helsinki Area. It is already possible now to conduct water to Helsinki, too, but from the Korpimäki pumping station onwards it must be done through the River Vantaa, which is polluted. When the tunnel is completed in 1982, good quality water can be conducted from Lake Päijänne to the Helsinki Metropolitan Area through a continuous rock tunnel. The cost estimate in 1973 was $ 88 million while it is now $ 90 million notwithstanding high inflation. AREAS NEEDED FOR CONSTRUCTION The areas needed for construction were bought through voluntary deals. Areas of 4 - 5 hectares were bought along the tunnel line at about 5 km intervals. The international manufacturers of construction machinery are responding to these challenges, and they will be presenting their innovations in all these fields at bauma 2013. bauma, the international trade fair for mining and construction machinery, mining vehicles, and building material machines, takes place from April 15 to 21, 2013 at the Messe Munchen exhibition center in Munich, Germany. The last bauma, in 2010, attracted 3,256 exhibitors from 53 countries, and more than 420,000 visitors from more than 200 nations. Covering a total of 555,000 m2 (5.97 million sq ft) of exhibition space, bauma is one of the largest trade shows in the world. This year?s fair is expected to surpass the 2010 figures. Here are some examples of the new developments visitors can expect to see at the show.

Understanding constraints within the raw battery material supply chain is essential for making informed decisions that will ensure the battery industry’s future success. The primary limiting factor for long-term mass production of batteries is mineral extraction constraints. These constraints are highlighted in a first fill analysis which showed significant risks if lithium-ion batteries are used to fully support vehicle electrification and intermittent energy storage. Nickel, lithium, cobalt and graphite reserves risk 100 percent depletion with significant consumption of known resources. Furthermore, more than 700 new critical mineral mines will need to be developed to meet the required production rates for decarbonization by 2050. Demand for critical minerals will outpace mine development timelines even as improvements are made to battery energy density and compositions. Governments and the private sector need to align themselves on decarbonization goals to establish cooperative agreements on the critical mineral supply chain by reducing the barriers to entry and increasing exploration efforts. Additional measures must also be taken to reduce the demand for critical minerals. Policy such as incentivizing public transportation and biking infrastructure can be exploited to drastically reduce the mineral demand placed on the mining industry.

The reaction kinetics of sulfuric acid leaching of brass foundry flue dusts were studied. As received flue dusts were separated into two size fractions, a coarse fraction (median size 103.5 microns) and a fine fraction (median size 3.4 microns). Experiments were performed on both fractions al-though most results are reported for the coarse fraction. Leaching experiments were conducted in a stirred reactor to determine those factors which govern the kinetic response of the sys-tem. The kinetics were followed by determining the increase in the concentration of dissolved copper with time. The effects of temperature, concentration and oxygen partial pressure on the rate of copper dissolution were examined. In addition, reaction residues were examined by SEM, EDAX and X-ray analysis. An activation energy of 4.8 kcal/mole (20.08 kJ/mole) was calculated. The rate was found to be significantly dependent on oxygen partial pressure and acid concentration. The order of the reaction with respect to oxygen partial pressure and hydrogen ion concentration was approximately 1.50 and 0.37, respectively. Three International Symposiums-the 14th International Minerals Processing Congress, the 17th APCOM, and the SME-AIME Fall Meeting special symposium on Design and Installation of Com¬minution Circuits-held in 1982 contained a number of papers relating to the fundamentals of processing coals and metallic minerals. In addition, many papers were published elsewhere in the literature. Some of the more significant papers are discussed below. Flavel reviewed key performance parameters, such as energy-size relationships for crushing processes and presented a fundamental basis for optimizing crusher productivity and possibly for development of improved crushers. Pascoe et al. reviewed the use of such control schemes. Magerowski and Karra presented a paper on a computer program developed to and in the design of crushing circuits. The problems associated with the scale-up to very large ball mills were discussed by Arbiter and Harris, and by Kavetsky and Whiten. Both groups concluded that limits on mill productivity arise due to problems associated with particle breakage and transport through mills. Austin et al., and Herbst and Rajamini reviewed the state of the art for the use of grinding circuit simulators for design and control. The effects of mill operating and design parameters on selection and breakage were discussed in detail. The philosophy of control and instrumentation for grinding circuits was extensively discussed by Kawatra and Seitz. Their paper presented for the first time an analytical basis for the inferential particle sizing technique and provided a fundamental basis for the implementation of this technique. The effect of reagent addition variation's on the performance of coal flotation circuits was reported by Kawatra and Waters, and on sulfide flotation circuits by Klimpel et al. Both groups analyzed circuit behavior from a kinetic point of view and reached similar conclusions on the effects of collectors and frothers. The computer simulation of an iron ore flotation circuit also was reported by Kawatra et al. In this work particular attention was paid to the phenomena of froth overloading. Klimpel et al., Kawatra and Waters, and Niemi et al. discussed the philosophy of control by flotation circuits from a fundamental kinetic point of view. An extension of the use of high intensity magnetic separators to the beneficiation of specular hematite was discussed by Thayer and Linkson.

Imaging is a fundamental requirement when characterizing minerals, ores and related products. Images are used for presentation, texture analysis, characterization, image analysis, identification, etc. The image mode that is utilized is dependent on the application, mineral properties and available instruments. Different instruments produce images that display different features. In order of increasing complexity they are: hand specimens, a non-polarizing microscope, polarizing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), low vacuum SEM, microprobe, secondary ion mass spectrometer, staining, cathodoluminescence, tomography and others. Image analysis uses images produced with either an optical microscope or a SEM, but the SEM images are superior in this application. The environmental and economic problem created by pyrite in coal are well documented. The removal of pyritic sulfur prior to, or during, utilization has been the object of considerable research, however, much of this research has proceeded without a proper knowledge of the microscopic occurrences of pyrite in coal. This paper investigates the forms, occurrences, and variations in the distribution of pyrite in major West Virginia coal scan. Twenty-nine samples from twenty-two major west Virginia coal scans were selected for this study (see Table I). The samples were selected so as to be representative of the major coal producing areas of the state. All samples, except five, were collected at active surface mines, as indicated in Table I, and all except one were channel samples. The time interval between sampling and preparation of polished microblocks varied from two months to two years, though most were prepared within three months of collection. Grinding, screen¬ing, and riffling of samples to obtain 250 grams of -20 mesh coal for microscopic analysis strictly followed ASTM procedure D2013-72.

You’ve probably encountered one of those kids who think they know best despite a lack of any real experience.Hi, my name is Erica, and I am a Millennial. We often get a bad rap, sometimes for good reason. But we do have qualities that are often overlooked. For example, I am happy to share with my generation a real desire to make a difference in the world and a commitment to innovation. Does this mean I think we always have good ideas? No – especially not right away. After all, few of us came anywhere near a piece of construction equipment until arriving for our first job, as was the case for me. We may have fancy degrees, but not many of us learned to run a jackleg drill in school.Two weeks after graduating college in 2011, I packed up my bags and moved to New York City to work as a field engineer for Traylor Bros. Inc. on the Queens Bored Tunnels project (Granite/Traylor /Frontier Kemper, JV), part of NYC MTA’s multi-billion dollar Long Island Railroad East Side Access project. It was here I became acquainted with the notorious New York City union workers. Perhaps the greatest challenge of my career thus far was earning the respect of the field supervision and craft workers on this first project.The first time I asked a maintenance mechanic to clean a piece of equipment in accordance with our maintenance protocol I got a flat-out “No.” It was the most powerless I had ever felt. But why should these experienced workers trust a 21-year-old girl with her civil engineering degree and no prior experience? I realized no employee on the job had any reason to listen to me — not until I proved my worth. Fortunately, I arrived on the job site just as we were commissioning the slurry plant for the first tunnel drive. I dove into learning as much about the slurry tunneling process as possible and was able to quickly pick up the ins and outs of running the slurry separation plant. As none of the other engineers or management had first-hand experience on a slurry tunneling job, I soon became the go-to engineer in the slurry plant. No one questioned me if I asked to have something done around the plant after that, or if they did, they quickly learned that I had a convincing answer as to the need for the task. I was even able to play a large role in shaping our slurry monitoring and control methodology."

This study simulates the impact of a shale gas well casing breach near a longwall mine. Field studies are conducted to measure mining-induced permeability changes over the abutment pillar of a longwall mine, and a geomechanical model is developed in 3DEC, a three-dimensional numerical modeling code, to predict the aperture of fractures in the overburden at the study site. The predicted aperture values are used to determine mining-induced permeabilities, and the results are compared with the field measurements. These aperture values are provided as inputs into fracture flow code (FFC), which generates a stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model for the study site and predicts the potential shale gas flow to the mine. Results from 100 DFN realizations are statistically analyzed using the bootstrapping method to compensate for notable variation in fracture geometry. The results show a significant difference between the gas inflow for nearby panels due to increase in the induced permeability during mining of the second panel. The average gas flow to the mine was calculated as 4.72 × 10 m3/s (49 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the first panel mining, 8.97 × 10 m3/s (19 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the first panel mining, 2.16 × 10 m3/s (458 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the second panel mining, and 8.07 × 10 m3/s (171 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the second panel mining. Depending on the mine ventilation system, this could result in methane concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Hence, these findings provide insights into the potential risk of an unconventional gas well casing breach near a longwall mine under shallow cover.

The McDonald gold deposit is located in the upper Blackfoot Valley in Lewis and Clark County in west-central Montana, about 65 km (40 miles) northwest of Helena and 13 km (8 miles) east of Lincoln (Fig. 1). The McDonald project area covers about 20.7 km2 (8 sq miles) of elevated terrain on the north side of the Blackfoot Valley. The Blackfoot River lies 1 km (0.6 miles) south of the McDonald deposit. East Butte and West Butte rise 300 m (985 ft) above the Blackfoot Valley to an elevation of 1,750 m (5,740 ft). They conveniently divide the area into two parts. The Seven-Up Pete Joint Venture (SPJV) is a partnership between Phelps Dodge Mining (72.25%) and CR Montana, a subsidiary of Canyon Resources (27.75%). SPJV controls about 83 km2 (32 sq miles) of mineral and surface rights in the Lincoln area. The McDonald project is on state-owned and private land. The joint venture has conducted exploration since 1989 at the Seven-Up Pete, McDonald and Keep Cool areas (Fig. 1).
