Computerized Preventive Maintenance is important in maintaining consistent and efficient operation in any industry utilizing sophisticated and expensive equipment on a continuous basis. At today's large bulk materials handling facilities, the problems of continuous operation of complex machines with their thousands of components exposed to abrasion, dirt, dust and the elements, are intensified and multiplied. Effective preventive maintenance can increase profits. Yet, the number of tasks to be performed is so staggering that it is beyond error-free human capacity. The computer must be an essential ele¬ment in any efficient and economical preventive maintenance system. Computerized preventive maintenance techniques have been successfully used in many fields, usually involving highly skilled and specialized personnel working under favorable and controlled conditions. Now, The Pittsburgh & Conneaut Dock Company has developed and is applying a computerized preventive maintenance system that is applicable to the bulk materials handling industry. The "system" has taken many years of intensive effort to develop and has been time-tested and proven during the past years on equipment handling materials with rugged physical characteristics and corrosive and abrasive qualities, under some of the most adverse weather conditions on the Great Lakes.

Despite two large projects represented in the keynote docket, the mood of the 2011 SME Arizona Conference was summed up best by Ferol Baker, general manager of New Mexico Copper Corp. (a wholly owned subsidiary of Themac Resources Group), ?In the past, it seemed like you couldn?t go to a conference like this without hearing about one big new greenfield project after another. Now what you see is companies doing internal expansion or small-scale brownfield development.? Overall, the tone of this year?s meeting, held at the J.W. Marriott Resort at Starr Pass in Tucson, AZ, was upbeat, yet practical. From the keynote and luncheon addresses to the six panels of sessions, the projects described were positive about the future, yet focused on the details required to make those projects come to fruition.

"As engineers, we are trained to use logical, rational problem solving to insure our mines operate at maximum efficiency. We tend to use the same technical approach to design safety into all mining systems. This works well for machines, but not so much for the human component. Recent insights in the field of behavioral economics provide useful ideas for addressing the fact that we are driven by emotions more often than by rational thought. Understanding the nonrational aspect of human behavior is an important piece of any safety system design. INTRODUCTION The most common economic model is based on humans making rational decisions; that given the proper information, we will make a logical, rational decision based on what is best for ourselves (Ariely, 2009, p. xviii). In many cases this is an accurate description of how we make decisions. As an engineer, I was trained to apply the precision of mathematics and logic to solve problems. As an engineering professor, I now teach this approach to bright young minds preparing them for a life of professional effectiveness as practicing engineers. That said, we are not only rational. Daniel Kahneman, winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics, describes a model for how we think (Kahneman, 2011). System 1 is the part of our mind that is fast, intuitive, and emotional; while our logical, slower, and deliberative mind is System 2. According to Kahneman’s model, System 1 runs automatically, most of what you think and do originates in System 1. System 2 takes over when things get difficult, including the application of math and logic, and the resolution (or avoidance) of conflict. As engineers, we would typically assume that we operate in System 2 mode most of the time. This is where the model becomes useful, for Kahneman points out two important aspects of the dynamic between the two systems in our mind. First, System 1 has biases, systematic errors that lead to answering questions with an easier answer (rather than a right answer) before System 2 is engaged. Second, we can be blind to the obvious, and also be blind to our blindness. Complicating things further, System 1 cannot be turned off (Kahneman, pp. 24-25)."

Five-element style deposits are unusual hydrothermal systems that are typically characterized by a nickel-cobalt-arsenic- silver-bismuth metal assemblage. This mineralization is often represented by abundant native silver, arsenic, or bismuth, and followed by nickel, cobalt, and iron arsenides (skutterudite, safflorite, nickeline, rammelsbergite, and lollingite). The Black Hawk district in Grant County, New Mexico is one of the few examples of this mineralization style in the United States. Despite the differences in formation temperature, depth of emplacement, and host rocks between five-element style deposits worldwide, there are commonalities in mineralogy, ore texture, and composition. A detailed exploration of the native metal and arsenide phases will be performed to compare ore forming fluids between systems and the effects on styles of mineralization and paragenesis, as well as to aid in broader classification of the deposit style. Mineralogy and mineral relationships of the Black Hawk District and other five-element deposits worldwide will be characterized by reflected light petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis. Mineralogical phase diagrams will be generated to better understand the driving processes and evolution of the systems through native metal and arsenide precipitation.

The responses of calcite, feldspar and quartz minerals in a laboratory free-fall electrostatic separator after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC and copper plates were investigated. The effects of H3BO3 and BaC12 chemical pretreatment on the electrical properties of the above minerals were examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed along with the determined charge, dielectric constant and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. The electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation after tribocharging and chemical pretreatment are explored relative to the electrical behavior of the minerals.

There are a great number of asbestos deposits in the USSR, and some are quite large. The main deposits of chrysotile asbestos are shown in Fig. 1. The Bazhenovo deposit, which is located in the Sverdlovsk region, is the largest and has been mined since 1889. Systematic studies of asbestos deposits were begun from the very be- ginning of Soviet government and are most often connected with the names K.E. Tarasov, P.M. Tatarinov, B.J. Merenkov, N.D. Sobolev, F.V. Syromjatnikov, V.N. Lodochnikov, V.P. Petrov, V.P. Eremeev, L.A. Sokolova, V.R. Artemov, and V.F. Dybkov. Investigations by these people and others helped the USSR be one of the most important producers of asbestos in the world. In this chapter, the main asbestos deposits of the USSR are explained in a general outline from the point of view of their genesis, common features, and differences that must be taken into account for forecasting, exploration, and the mining of asbestos. All chrysotile asbestos deposits of the USSR were formed from magnesium rock as a result of comparatively low grade temperature, hydrothermal alteration, and free crystallization of fibrous chrysotile in open cavities that served as catalysts. Chrysotile, a widely distributed rock-forming mineral, is not in general an important mineral for industry as it is a long fibrous and main vein variety. However, it must serve for geologists as an important prospecting criteria. And, the geologist should search for the mineral not only in places of possible chrysotile generation, but in places where asbestos may be crystallized in its long fibers. The Soviet geologists distinguish chrysotile asbestos deposits in two groups: (1) ultrabasic rocks and (2) sedimentary dolomite terranes, taking into account how the maternal rock was affected by hydrothermal solutions. The largest deposits are related to ultrabasite. In dolomite, the largest deposits are small and their asbestos contains almost no iron, which makes it a better filler for insulating plastics. There are a few types of asbestos deposits within the limits of the ultrabasic group, the largest being a Bazhenovo type to which the deposits of the Urals are attributed. This Bazhenovo asbestos is characterized by the most complete zonality of disposition for various kinds of asbestization. These types of deposits are, for the most part, the only ones presently working in the USSR. The Bazhenovo deposit is connected to the gabbro-peridotite intrusive belt that is about 180 km long and is broken into a number of fault blocks as shown in Fig. 2. Granitoid veins of intruded rocks are found along the deepest faults, and were sources of hydrothermal solutions that affected the maternal rock. The nearest granitoid vein, ultrabasite, is substituted by listwanite that consists of quartz, talc, carbonate, and some other essentially talcous rock. The next zone of hydrothermal alteration is composed of serpentine. The boundry between serpentinite and unaltered ultrabasite is as irregular, diffuse, and rough as the boundaries between all other zones. Nearer the vein of granitic rock, ultrabasite is entirely serpentinized into massif serpentinization that penetrates through cracks and fissures. There is an unaltered ultrabasite space between fissures, and the biggest block is preserved unaltered in the central part of the massif. The Soviet geologists call this ultrabasic sopka. Preservation of the unchanged blocks is of great importance for deposit formation as volume changes are impossible during the process of asbestization and serpentinization. It may be confidently said that asbestization in Bazhenovo type deposits is possible only when alteration of ultrabasite has not completely occurred. This paper discusses the subject of "Improving Contracting Methods" from the owners point of view, particularly the public. An overview is given of the work of the U.S. National Committee on Tunneling Technology and some apparent results of the implementation of these recommendations or lack thereof. Selected recommendations that are not being implemented are discussed as to the the desirability and the possible impact of their implementation. Impediments to acceptance of the recommendations are identified and solutions proposed. The difference in the flexibility, attitudes and approaches of owners, public, quasi-public and private, toward improving contracting methods are discussed. Particular emphasis is given to the fact that the onus to improve is on the owner because they usually develop the contractual language or at least have the final decision on its content and are or should be an equal party to the contract during its administration.

Microscopic observation of physical and chemical changes which take place in various materials under conditions of elevated temperature and controlled atmosphere can often yield valuable insight into the fundamental physical-chemical reactions which control processes in which these materials play an active role. The technique of high-temperature microscopy thus becomes an important tool for basic and applied research in pyrometallurgical and allied fields. Investigators have long been aware of this and through the years have applied the technique to a wide variety of problems. However, up to this time, application has been on a rather limited scale due to the high initial cost of equipment and the relatively low rate of production of data resulting from the complexity of the apparatus and attendant problems in manipulation.

Solution flow in leach dumps and heaps or in columns of representative rock has been the subject of only limited studies. This is a regime involving unsaturated flow in semiconsolidated rock with a wide size distribution. Even the concepts of continuous flow systems are fairly recent, and have evolved from the search for better methods of operating industrial chemical reactors. (1-3) Waste rock consolidation and permeability play a key role in solution flow characteristics. Harris (4) suggested that bulk density variations in a leach dump could alter the particle-to-particle contact, and that large particle aggregates could act like single, large particles . In the limiting case where the bulk density approaches that of the undisturbed, consolidated rock, the entire waste unit would behave as a single particle. Roman (5) treated the phenomenon of bulk density and its effect on consolidation in terms of lixiviant flow paths or solution channeling in leach dumps. Like Harris, he assumed that no solution moved through particles or particle aggregates associated with zones of high bulk density. Solution flow paths are thus effectively separated by particle regimes, creating solution channels in the waste body. While some attempts have been made to describe solution flow in leach dumps and related systems by utilizing computer model approaches and laboratory- scale simulations (5,6), there have been no direct, large-scale observations of solution movement in channels or of the actual channel sizes and distributions within a waste body. This paper describes a series of experiments involving large-scale, controlled waste leaching tests, conducted over a period of several years, and aimed at providing some direct observation of the changes in waste consolidation and permeability, the size and distribution of solution channels, the movement of such channels with continued solution application, and other features relating to solution flow during the leaching of low-grade waste. These results are then combined with mineralogical information to explain observed leach behavior.

Barite (BaS04) is an industrial mineral with hundreds of uses. It is primarily used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. This use comprised approximately 97% of U.S. barite consumption in 1981. Barite is found in three types of deposits: bedded, residual, and vein. Bedded deposits, because of their relatively large tonnage, have been the principle target of explorationists. Increased demand for barite in the mid to late seventies prompted many companies to significantly expand their efforts in barite exploration. Barite exploration techniques currently range from outcrop walking and geochemical exploration to gravity and seismic surveys.

"Refuge alternatives provide shelter to miners trapped underground during a disaster. Manufacturers must demonstrate that their refuge alternatives meet the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements for oxygen supply, carbon dioxide removal, and management of heat from the occupants and mechanical/chemical systems. In this study, miner size and activity level were used to determine the metabolic heat rate, oxygen requirements and carbon dioxide generation that are representative of miners in a refuge situation. A convenience sample of 198 male miners was used for the distribution of current U.S. coal miners, and the composite 95th percentile height and weight were determined to be 193 cm (76 in.) and 133 kg (293 lb). The resting metabolic rate (RMR) was determined to be representative of activity level in a refuge alternative. The highest likely metabolic heat generation ranged from 113 to 134 W, depending on occupancy. The highest required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal were estimated to be 23 L (0.81 cu ft) of oxygen per hour per person and 20 L (0.71 cu ft) of carbon dioxide per hour per person, which means the margin of safety is 50 percent or more compared with the MSHA requirements. The information on metabolic heat generation can be used to assess refuge alternative thermal environments by testing or simulation. The required oxygen supply and carbon dioxide removal can be used to assess refuge alternative requirements. The application of post-tensioning in segmental structures was introduced in the early 1900s and has been successfully applied in different types of structures including immersed tunnels, bridges, buildings, metro stations, and stadiums. There are, however, only five known circular concrete tunnel projects where the post-tensioning approach has been adopted. This paper discusses the application of post-tensioning to mitigate the high internal operating pressures in an effluent outfall tunnel project 7 miles, 11.3 km long, currently under construction for the Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts, LACSD. This project will be the first use of post- tensioned segmental concrete tunnel linings in North America.

The classification of rock and coal will assist in automated coal rib rating and shearer horizon control, and is studied with machine learning techniques in this work. A database of rock and coal images is created by filtering photographs taken by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). The classifier was trained with patches extracted from the coal and rock images, and an accuracy score of 0.9 was obtained. The trained classifier was then applied to classify rock from a new coal rib image with three rock layers of different thicknesses, and good agreement was achieved. The results demonstrate that it is promising to use machine learning techniques and rib images for rock and coal classification.

Coal mining has been an important industry in the Appalachian area for many years. This is particularly true in the northern part of the area, namely, in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio. Also, in the south a great deal of mining activity has been carried on in Alabama, Kentucky, and southwest Virginia. Some of the by-products of this activity has been the production of mineralized water from the mines in copious quantitites. The southern Appalachians have been somewhat more fortunate in that the water there has had a considerable amount of alkalinity in it, which has to a large extent eliminated some of the more undesirable aspects of mine drainage. Northern Appalachia, including central and western Pennsylvania, the Monongahela basin in West Virginia, and the Appalachian area in eastern Ohio have not been so fortunate in that coals in those areas and the top and bottom rock have, in many cases, shown considerable quantities of pyrite, and the water does not carry the carbonates found farther south.

The mining workforce experiences high rates of hazardous noise exposure and hearing loss. However, previous studies have identified specific behavioral and attitudinal barriers that keep miners from effectively acting to prevent their own hearing loss. NIOSH has developed several new hearing loss prevention tools and interventions that specifically target these barriers to prevention. The NIOSH Hearing Loss Simulator addresses motivation to take action and knowledge about the consequences of noise exposure. The QuickFit earplug test device and QuickFitWeb online hearing protection tester address barriers to effective earplug and earmuff use by verifying at least 15 decibels of protection. The NIOSH Roll-Pull-Hold technique helps miners obtain better protection through an easy-to-remember set of steps that improves attenuation by 9 decibels. The ?Inquiring Ears Want to Know? fact sheet helps miners to understand audiograms and to use them to maintain their hearing health. Each of these interventions can be used within the context of a comprehensive hearing loss prevention program.

INTRODUCTION The utilization of longwall mining technology in the United States has steadily increased since the first longwall plow system was installed in 1952. At the errs of FY 1992, some 76 coal mines were employing longwall mining systems for coal extraction, and approximately 78 shearer and 3 plow faces are operating nationwide at any given time. Although the number of operating longwalls has remained relatively constant over the last five years, longwall production levels have increased significantly during this period. During the same timeframe, the number of continuous miner sections has decreased by 13 pct., from approximately 1438 in FY 1988 to less than 1250 in FY 1992. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, the average production of longwall sections increased from approximately 2400 tons per shift (tps) in FY 1988 to more than 3100 tps FY 1992. In fact, the average production has more than tripled since 1978, when it was only 850 tps. Approximately 25 pct. of operating longwalls are capable of producing in excess of 4000 tps. Longwall production currently accounts for nearly 36 percent of U.S. underground coal production, compared to 4 pct. in 1978. These improvements are attributed to improved longwall equipment and increased availability, larger longwall panels and automation. While longwalls are highly productive and offer other advantages, operations employing this method of mining continue to experience dust compliance problems more frequently than other mining system. Although dust levels have remained relatively unchanged over the past five years, averaging 1.6 mg/m3 and 1.9 mg/m3 based on results of operator and inspector sampling, respectively, during FY 1992, approximately 25 pct. of the operating longwalls were in noncompliance during any given bimonthly sampling cycle. Although modest gains in longwall dust control technology have been made, these have been overshadowed by significant increases in production rates. As more coal is mined, more dust is generated (Figure 1). Therefore, the increase in longwall productivity has meant that far more dust is being produced which must be controlled. [ ] In view of the current compliance record, any efforts to further increase longwall output, as has been forecasted, must be accompanied by: (1) the reduction of dust levels at existing operations through the proper installation and maintenance of suitable engineering dust controls; and (2) the advancement of dust control technology for today's and future longwalls that will enable all face personnel o work in an environment that is free of excessive levels of respirable coal mine dust. MSHA'S RESPIRABLE DUST CONTROL PROGRAM Since 1972, federal regulations have required each coal mine operator to continuously maintain the average concentration of respirable dust in the mine atmosphere during each shift in the active workings at or below 2.0 mg/m3 through the application of environmental dust control methods. The Filblast Cyanidation Process incorporates the advantages of intense high shear mixing, high dissolved oxygen concentra­tion and high pressure to achieve extremely rapid gold dissolu­tion rates. This is made possible without suffering from high energy or wear rates by the unique design of the Filblast gas shear reactor. The reactor is a rugged and compact in-line device which can be constructed from a variety of wear and chemical resistant materials. High temperature tolerance is also possible so that the device can be incorporated into a pressure leach circuit with significant capital cost savings because of the high capacity to volume ratio that is an inherent feature of the device. For cyanidation applications the outer casing is protected by a polyurethane coating and the internal parts are of wear resistant polymer. The largest unit built to date has overall dimensions of 1200 mm length by 300 mm diameter and has a capacity of about 150 dry tonnes per hour at 40-45 % solids. Service life at this throughput is at least three months. Six mines are currently employing the Filblast Process and another six are conducting plant trials. The ore types range from highly reactive, almost impossible to treat, pyrrhotite/ arsenopy­rite to deeply weathered clay ore which forms a highly viscous pulp. It has been found that the effect of shear thinning has resulted in improved leaching and adsorption kinetics resulting in higher carbon loading and reduced soluble gold loss. Total tonnage treated is approximately eight million tonnes per annum. This paper presents the operating benefits and cost savings which have been achieved in four plants, two treating oxide/ sulphide ore blends and two treating highly reactive sulphide ore and concentrate. Filblast leasing and maintenance charges and pump operating costs are about ten percent of the benefits. A conceptual cyanidation circuit based on the Filblast Cyanidation Process is also discussed. The Filblast System is an in-line pressure leach aerator/ reactor which generates very high shear and greatly enhances mass transfer rate by generating extremely small gas particles where oxygen gas is required for oxidation reactions and/or utilising the high shear characteristics to minimise the diffusion boundary layer. Both of these rate limiting factors effect the rate mechanism for gold cyanidation. Initially two multi-stage Filblast aerator cartridges formed a leach train but now the trend is to install a single submersible cartridge of equivalent perfor­mance. This design simplifies installation and minimises change-out times. However the in-line concept can be employed where high pressure leaching or pressure oxidation is required. The reactor is submerged in the leach tank so that the mass of gas micro-bubbles contained in the discharging slurry is entrained in the agitator vortex and is thoroughly dispersed throughout the tank. A diagrammatic representation of a leaching circuit incorpo­rating the Filblast Reactor is shown in Figure 1. The recirculation pump takes new feed directly from the cyclone overflow trash screen either under gravity or pump fed and recirculates the balance to maintain 250 - 270 m3/h total slurry flow. All of the leach feed slurry gets at least one pass through the Filblast thereby eliminating short-circuiting. Typically a 6/4 EAH Warman pump drawing 60-70 kW is required to circulate 250 m3/h through the system. The back pressure generated by the Filblast is in the range of 400-500 kPa depending upon pumping rate, pulp density and slurry rheology. The high shearing rate effectively negates the viscous effect of slurries and the addition of a gas further reduces the pulp density by virtue of the intensely aerated, homogeneous medium. The gold leaching Filblast cartridge elements are made of polyurethane but stainless steel, ni-hard, rubber or ceramics can be used depending on the operating temperature and design duty. The efficiency of the Filblast Leach Reactor in gold cyani­dation is due to the extremely efficient mixing, oxygen dissolu­tion and surface polishing action of the Filblast design. Either air or oxygen may be used but Atomaer recommend the use of oxygen because of the rate benefits gained from cyaniding at [02] significantly > 20 ppm D O in the reactor. Very high DO concentrations have been measured; in excess of 50 ppm. There is some debate as to whether the value is a true measure of the DO or the oxygen meter sensor is measuring the effect of a mass of very fine bubbles of free oxygen. Regardless of the fact the reactor has registered some amazing gold dissolution rates commonly in excess of 80 % during transit of the pulp through the reactor. The elapsed time is less than half a second!

Mine management in general, and mine maintenance in particular, has lagged in using computers as an effective management tool. SF Coal Corporation, in conjunction with the development of the new Lee Ranch Mine, is developing a computer-based maintenance system as an integral part of a total mine management information system. The system includes the ability to schedule and plan preventative maintenance on all rolling stock and mine facilities, project and track component life, and evaluate and schedule manpower requirements. The system hardware, shared by accounting, warehousing, engineering, production and management, consists of a multi-user, multi-processor micro-computer.
