The Newell Creek Dam Inlet/Outlet Replacement Project is located approximately 11 miles north of Santa Cruz, California along Highway 9 in the San Lorenzo Valley. This project will replace the existing inlet/outlet works at the Loch Lomond Reservoir by constructing a tunnel using conventional excavation methods while simultaneously drilling three intake shafts to intercept the tunnel from within the city’s water supply. This project will improve the system’s overall operational efficiency and performance, and provide a safe and reliable facility for the City of Santa Cruz’s drinking water supply. This paper discusses the overall project configuration, construction observations, and challenges during construction, including tunnel excavating through the marine sedimentary siltstone of the Monterey Formation, probing and pre-excavation grouting, and the tools utilized to manage the project.

Henderson Mine personnel have more than 20 years experience and have placed more than 400,000 m3 (520,000 cu yd) of shotcrete and concrete. Over the last 20 years, the mine has used a variety of equipment to place concrete, wet shotcrete and dry shotcrete and is constantly trying to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Recently, the mine received a state-of-the-art wet shotcrete placer. The batch plant was automated, and a mobile concrete-form jumbo was fabricated. The mine will also receive a new concrete transport truck. Henderson’s background The Henderson Mine is owned by Climax Molybdenum Co., a unit of Amax, Inc. It is an underground, primary molybdenum producer near Empire, CO. The mill is located between Silverthome and Kremmling, CO and is connected to the mine by 16 km (10 miles) of underground and 8 km (5 miles) of surface track. Except for the ore haulage system which is powered by overhead trolley, all mobile equipment is rubber-tired and diesel-powered.

"The application of passive tracer gas sources in underground mines is particularly useful for long-term tracer studies as well as for studies conducted in permissible areas of underground coal mines. The use of passive perfluoromethylcyclohexane (PMCH) sources has been previously demonstrated in underground mines, but this new work details the testing of multiple, distinct tracer compounds compatible with passive sources. A description of their potential application in mine ventilation systems is also provided. Three tracer compounds are detailed: (1) PMCH, (2) perfluoroethylcyclohexane (PECH) and perfluoromethylcyclopentane (PMCP). The release rates of these tracers were examined over a 180-day period at multiple temperatures. The advantages and disadvantages of these sources are presented, along with potential applications in characterizing ventilation circuits, flow through gob and leakage. IntroductionThe use of tracer gases for ventilation applications is an established practice, with various past research projects conducted using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). Tracer gas techniques have been applied to assess flow rates, dilutions rates and auxiliary ventilation system efficiencies with quick, reliable and accurate results (Suglo and Frimpong, 2002). Perfluorocarbon tracer (PFT) compounds are a new introduction to ventilation and air modeling applications in terms of ventilation flow characterization (Watson et al., 2007).PFTs are liquids that are characterized by low background presence in air, low reactivity, high detectability and low toxicity. A design was proposed, called a permeation plug release vessel (PPRV), to convert PFTs from a liquid to a gas and then release the gaseous tracer in a controlled manner. The initial concept was originally introduced by Brookhaven National Laboratory and refined later to become the PPRV. The PPRV functions by allowing the volatile PFT liquid to become a vapor in a controlled manner. The vapor diffuses through a permeable silicone stopper at a predictable rate proportional to temperature (Zhang and Cloud, 2006)."

PREFACE Debris disposal can very often be a severe problem and major restriction on tunnel boring projects, especially for small diameter tunnels and in underground mines. Hydraulic transport could provide a suitable solution. Investigations have therefore been made in connection with a full-scale project of 4.8 km length and 2,3 m diameter, to obtain the required technical and economical data for planning an optimized transport system, e.g. for a tunnel boring drivage of 6 - 7 m diameter in underground coal mines. INTRODUCTION The Radau-Tunnel, chosen for the investigations, has been designed for transferring flood peaks between the rivers Radau and Grosse Romke in the Harz-Mountain of Lower Saxony. A DEMAG TVM 20/23 H tunnel boring machine was used to drive the tunnel on a rising gradient of 0,53 %. The rock consisted of shale and hornblende (55 %), granite (15 %), diabase (15 %), chert (8 %) and gabbro (7 %). The project has been sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Research and Technology.

"Managing slurry is a constant challenge for mining operations. Since slurries are not uniform, the challenge is complicated by varying rheology, velocity, temperature and pressure, all of which affect how the slurry moves through the pipeline and how destructive it is to the system it is flowing through. Picking the right equipment from the outset — the right size pipe, the right size pump and the proper valves for the application — allows mines to operate more efficiently. Better valve designs deliver multiple benefits — they can lower the cost of operations, reduce the amount of maintenance and associated downtime required and are better for the environment. Historically, modulating systems have used ball, plug and pinch valves to manage the flow of slurry, but each of these alternatives has limitations. Ball valves require ceramic lining in order to delay wear, and once a ball valve does wear, the entire valve must be replaced. Similarly, plugs in plug valves should be coated to perform in control systems, and whole valves must be swapped out upon wear. Pinch valves are expensive and only require replacement of the sleeve. However, sleeve replacement involves an extremely arduous process in which the valve is completely taken apart.Traditionally, designers have avoided using knife gate valves (KGV) in modulating systems because KGVs have not been able to hold up under the harsh operating conditions. The throttling that is required in some of these processes rapidly fatigues conventional KGVs, rendering them useless and in need of replacement. Fortunately, innovative design changes have the potential to change established views.Breaking new groundRecognizing the need for improved components, Victaulic took on the challenge of designing a valve that could withstand abrasive slurry systems for a much longer period of time. The first step in this process was to talk to miners, maintenance personnel, process engineers and operators in the field about the limitations of current offerings and then determine design specifications for an ideal replacement.Many of the responses to these inquiries were very similar and reflected challenges with current operations; the primary objective was to find a valve that would be lighter and cheaper than the valves currently in use. In theory, a lighter valve would be easier to replace, and since replacements need to be performed frequently, a cheaper valve seemed like the right idea."

Intermittent coal mining has been conducted in Alaska for over a century. The first report of coal in Alaska was by the Veechy expedition of 1826 and 1827. Whaling ships used coal from Corwin Bluff near Cape Beaufort during the early and latter parts of the 19th century. The first coal mine in Alaska -- and probably the oldest in the Pacific coast of North America -- was opened by the Russians at Port Graham on the southwest tip of the Kenai Peninsula. The mine was operated from 1855 until 1867 when the United States took possession of Alaska. From 1880 to 1915 coal mining was carried on intermittently at several localities including Unga Island, Herendeen Bay, Chignik Bay, Kachemak Bay, and several points along the Yukon River. Small coal mines along the Yukon River provided fuel for the river steamers traveling from St. Michaels to Whitehorse. The area of sustained coal production began with the completion of the Alaskan Railroad from Anchorage to the Matanuska coal field in 1916 and to the Nenana field in 1918. Coal production continued to increase until 1953, at which time the oil and gas fields in Cook Inlet were developed. Oil and gas eventually replaced- the Matanuska coal as a means of providing heat and power. The military in the Anchorage area shifted from coal to oil in 1967 causing a decrease in production. The increased demand for electric power in the Fairbanks area offset the decline and coal production started to increase. In 1969-1970 the Golden Valley Electric Association constructed a mine-mouth power plant 70 miles southwest of Fairbanks near Healy and a power line to Fairbanks. LOCATION OF COALS IN ALASKA Coals are found in all geographical subdivisions of Alaska. Coal in Alaska ranges in age from Carboniferous to Tertiary, and grade from lignite through anthracite. Figure 1 shows the locations of Alaskan coal fields. The only fields that have been developed extensively are the Matanuska and Nenana. Figure 2

Virtually no two mines operate with the same geographic, geologic, and mining conditions. It follows chat problems vary with the conditions from mine to mine or often from one section to another in the same mine. Actual situations are described, and a technique of "stacking" maps to predict hazards is presented. Two case histories of the use of multiple overlays are de- scribed. The first deals with a property that was examined before the start of mining. The second is a property in which severe ground control problems were encountered and the relationship between the problem areas and known conditions were found to be related.

To many who for years have scrutinized the US mineral supply picture, recent, often strident debate on present-day security of many critical mineral supplies echoes sentiments repeatedly expressed in the past decade by the minerals industry. At no time since the last world war has such a flurry of public concern been expressed for the economy's mineral sector. Where once mineral availability problems were relegated to the newspaper's business section or not reported at all, today comprehensive analyses of our international mineral posture are discussed in detail by some of the nation's most respected and widely read periodicals. In past years, disinterest was also experienced whenever the mining industry attempted to carry its message to Congress, the public, and the government's executive branch. Among minerals professionals, the past decade was a time of particular frustration clue to serious erosion ill US ability to competitively produce the vast array of raw materials vital to the economy acid national defense. Fervent calls for immediate attention were simply not answered. These professionals have understood that mining and agriculture are the primary sources of wealth, fulfilling virtually all needs and creating and sustaining jobs. Why then has it been so difficult to raise the consciousness of the American public, and even more surprisingly, of the government and national leadership? The answer to this question is perhaps endemic to how government functions, but pore important, it begs that mining professionals capitalize on the opportunity and the attention now at hand. Carefully conceived and implemented actions by both private and public sectors are needed more than ever before in the past 35 years. To this end, it is vitally important to seek out and resolve the root causes of supply problems and not dwell on superficial solutions. The following discussion attempts to establish a simple framework to view this process. It does not presume to be an exposition of cause and effect, but hopefully identifies some needed steps. Growing Awareness in the 1970s Of all events stimulating current concern, certainly the OPEC oil embargo has left the deepest impression. It was inevitable that after such a shock, man. Americans would begin asking whether the US was as vulnerable to cutoffs of minerals as it was to oil cutoffs. Then, when serious trade security questions surfaced in sonic mineral-rich nations in Africa and the Persian Gulf, the ominous term ''resource war" began to be heard. Countries such as South Africa, Zaire, Zambia, and Zimbabwe have suddenly become key areas for testing our national security resolve. As the US witnesses the influx of Marxist influence in many sub-Saharan exporting nations and the rising threat to free world access to critical materials and energy, the assurance of adequate supplies is becoming a national issue at last. The US is now learning that self-sufficiency for many vitally important mineral commodities has vanished. Of course, it did not vanish overnight; it had been leaking away for years, and the trend was noted by industry and a few in government. Within the minerals community, suspected weaknesses in America's resource posture were sought and found. As a result, the country's heavy reliance on foreign sources fur more than a score of minerals, many extremely vital to security, has been forcefully documented and the case for drastically altering the supply unbalance hits been proposed. The renewed concern for national defense is central to almost all proposals for minimizing US foreign mineral dependence. It is not surprising that many of the voices heard today on the dependency issue are active members or alumni of the militate establishment. Unfortunately, their almost total focus on the security aspects of dependency has tended to obscure important underlying issues which are not directly defense-related. Some of the proposals advanced might mitigate the deeps-dency problems, but they still fall short of curing the underlying problems that have led to a steady loss in mineral self-sufficiency. In almost all instances these problems call be traced to increasing government influence on the free market minerals economy. Some national security proponents seek to attain total self-sufficiency in minerals. Such arguments must he tempered by existing realities. It is easy to demonstrate that the US obtains substantial quantities of sonic essential minerals from potentially insecure sources abroad. That the US will continue to do so in the foreseeable future is not in doubt Uncertainty begins, however, when we try to interpret the significance of these facts. It is important to understand that mineral dependency does not irrevocably lead to vulnerability. Unlike oil, no mineral commodity combines the same degree of universal indispensibility and centralized foreign control of supplies. Moreover, although many US-required minerals are produced by fewer countries than export oil, those minerals cannot approach petroleum in economic or industrial importance. Finally, most foreign supplies come front friendly, secure nations such as Canada, 'Mexico, and Brazil. This, aid more, constitutes a vital element in US economic health as a world trading nation. For the mining industry, the Internal Revenue Code and regulations offer a range of choices in arriving at the allowable depletion. Each case is essentially unique. Two prerequisites can optimize these opportunities: communications between the mining company's tax specialists and its technical staff; and an understanding of IRS definitions. For the latter, a logical starting point is consideration of exploration and development, since they precede production and depletion is unallowable prior to production. Criteria for selecting engineering and accounting options for exploration and development indicate the necessity of interaction between these company functions to achieve the most favorable tax position.

Fire hazards can cause severe and irrecoverable damage to reinforced concrete (RC) tunnel linings, threatening the serviceability and resilience of transportation networks. This paper first examines the existing methodologies that are used to classify damage to tunnel linings from fire. These approaches are then supplemented with the results of advanced modeling and inputs from industry experts to propose new fire damage/ repair classifications with the associated thresholds. The results of the presented research can be used to guide fire risk assessment as well as the performance-based design of tunnel fire protection.

The Upper Santa Cruz Groundwater Basin lies in the drainage area of the Santa Cruz River in Arizona, and extends upstream from the community of Rillito to the international boundary, see Figure 1. The principal water use area lies between and includes the cities of Tucson and Nogales. A subsurface geologic barrier near Rillito provides a reasonable dividing line between the groundwaters of the Upper and Lower Santa Cruz Basins. The Upper Basin contains the Tucson and Sahuarita-Continental critical ground- water areas. The Tucson Water Use Area encompasses the Tucson metropolitan area and extends from the northern boundary of the Basin south to the boundary between the Tucson and Sahuarita- Continental critical groundwater areas near San Xavier. The San Xavier Use Area is the San Xavier Indian Reservation. The north and south boundaries of the Continental Use Area coincide with the limits of the Sahuarita-Continental critical groundwater area. The first study of groundwater in this valley was initiated by Dr. G. E. P. Smith in 1905 and the results were published in 1910, followed by a series of bulletins of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station, University of Arizona, covering the general field of groundwater development and utilization. Beginning in 1939, the Ground Water Branch of the United States Geologic Survey, in cooperation with the Arizona State Land Department and the Arizona Water Commission (AWC), have published a series of bulletins concerning groundwater occurrence and utilization in various areas of the state. In 1975 and 1977, the AWC published the "Arizona State Water Plan" (1), comprising a detailed inventory of water availability and use in the State of Arizona, and a study of alternative futures.

Pigments are used in two segments of papermaking, as the major component in paper coating formulations and, in small percentages, as fillers in the paper web. Historically, the dominant use has been in coating, however, recent developments have fostered a multifaceted effort to substantially increase the pigment component in the paper furnish. Factors responsible for these developments together with their relationship to recent and forecast changes in papermaking technology are reviewed. Finally, some thoughts are presented on the probable timing and extent of these changes as well as their expected impact on the future demand for the common paper pigments.

Within the exploration programs carried on by the Consejo de Recursos Naturales No Renovables, the one with the largest coverage (more than 75, 000 square kilometers) is the northern Coahuila Exploration Project. Due to its nature, geochemical exploration methods were selected to obtain quick results. The program included essentially, three main stages : 1. - A regional geochemical stream sediment survey. 2. - Semi-detailed studies of the anomalous areas selected in the previous stage, and 3. - Detailed exploration of the promising areas. To the date, the first two stages have been completed, and the third one is being carried on. The work was started on september 1972, and it will probably take one more year before drilling can be started, but at the end of stage three it is expected that at least 5 important targets will have been detected. The regional work was conducted by 3 field crews, but the detailed program is being done by only one.

[Duquesne Light Company's three power plants in western Pennsylvania are now receiving high BTU clean coal from a new coal preparation plant. When burning coal from this plant, particulate emissions are greatly reduced and the sulfur content of stack ace descend. The cleaner coal also leads to more effecting overall operating of the power plants because of less bulk handling of fuel and ash. Environmental improvement is an important benefit of the cleaner, more complete combustion.]

Since our firm was established by Mr. Price in 1937, we have followed an investment philosophy which is based on the belief that investment in growth stocks is the most assured way of achieving superior, long term investment accomplishment. There are many criteria that we use to select growth companies but the most important is a combination of superior management operating in an industry with above average growth potential. This growth stock approach is the cornerstone of our investment strategy for two of the three mutual funds sponsored by the Price organization and for our private clients. However, during the past 5 years we have seen inflation accelerate due to a variety of factors including the inability of our government to meet seemingly unlimited needs with limited revenue sources. While there might be temporary periods of price stability, we believe that inflation will still continue to be the investor's greatest problem in future years. Our conviction that inflation would increase combined with the acceleration of inflation in the late 1960s stimulated an intensive investment research effort, on our part, to identify those companies with strong natural resource bases -- who own or control large, secure, and low cost tangible assets. Over the longer term and in an environment of a depreciating dollar some of these firms should be able to develop and sell these assets at higher prices. While we still believe that investing in growth companies is a sound investment strategy to offset inflation, we also believe that certain natural resource companies will show well above average investment performance. In the newest Price mutual fund, The Rowe Price New Era Fund, we have, as a matter of policy, placed a large portion of the portfolio in natural resource companies.

Zinc ores were first discovered in Tennessee in 1856 at Jefferson City where a deposit of oxidized ore became known as the Mossy Creek Mine. From that time until 1913 small scale attempts at prospecting and mining were made in various parts of the district. The actual systematic development of the zinc deposits dates from 1913 when the American Zinc Company started operations at Mascot. Six mines are in operation by three companies and a seventh mine is being developed by a fourth company. The total daily production from the field is 11,000 tons of crude ore, which grades from 3 to 6 per cent zinc. Most of the ore bodies are large and ramiform, resembling asyrmetrical networks in which the ore shoots form channel like branches with areas of non-comercia1 rock, called blank islands. Most of the orebodies are adapted to large scale mechanization.

"Above ground, elevated belt conveyors with span >200m between support points can cross valleys, rivers, forests and buildings with minimal footprint. The Cable Bridge Conveyor is a new type of suspension bridge based belt conveyor system that has long span between support points. It combines typical belt conveyor and the improved simple suspension bridge to form a conveyor bridge. The improved simple suspension bridge places a widened bridge deck directly on suspended cables, without the need for high truss towers. The benefits include reduced cost and increase aerodynamic stability compared to conventional suspension bridges. The Cable Bridge Conveyor’s compatibility with current belt conveyors allows the versatility in application. INTRODUCTION Belt conveyor is a ubiquitous material handling system. Conveyors can be placed directly on ground or elevated above ground by support structures. Considerations of cost, design, environment, civil work, safety and process requirements are all factors in choosing the ground based or elevated conveyors (1). The ground based conveyor has the lowest structural cost, where the conveyor is laying on an existing road. Maintenance access is easy and straight forward. Compared to the ground based conveyor, the elevated conveyor can cross existing buildings and structures, give passage to traffic beneath the conveyor, has smaller footprint, and requires less civil work to pass mountainous areas. The drawback of the elevated conveyor is higher structural cost, which can be compared with savings in civil work and other benefits. Conventional elevated conveyors are supported by rigid truss type structures, with typical span of 15m to 25m between concrete support bents or steel trestles. Triangular truss, using steel pipes instead of hot rolled steel sections, is more efficient. The typical span of triangular truss supported conveyor is around 30m to 40m, while the weight is about 10% less than conventional box truss with shorter span (2). Long span elevated structure based on suspension bridge is another step forward in increasing the distance between support bents, reaching 100m~400m and beyond. The very wide distance between support points of an elevated conveyor offers unique benefits. The conveyor can cross rivers, valleys, highways, forests and other obstacles with minimal footprint and reduced civil work. The versatility from long span conveyors makes bulk material transportation over previously impossible terrains now a feasible option."

Sophisticated computer analysis methods such as finite elements, finite differences, and numerical integration have become tools in the mineral processing industry for design of large mill shells. While use of such methods allows the analyst-designer to take new freedoms with his designed structure, there are also pitfalls and dangers which must be recognized for the proper use of such sophisticated tools. One of the worst of these is treating any computer answers as "gospel truth". The present paper discusses the knowledge required by the analyst-designer for proper use of computer analysis, as well as explaining to the layman how to identify questionable areas in such structural analyses.

In most industrialized countries, the largest element of the mining industry in physical volume is that devoted to the extraction and processing of materials for use as construction aggregates. Required for all developments in industry and commerce, power and transportation, and housing and public services, their use is so widespread that possible sources are exploited throughout all geographic regions, as close as possible to the point of use. Thus, it is also the most frequently encountered form of mining throughout the world. These materials come from four main sources:- (a) Excavation of unconsolidated deposits of sand and gravel (b) Stone quarrying. (c) Processing of slags and other mineral wastes. (d) Manufacturing from clays and shales by heat fusion. The major uses are in: (a) Portland cement concrete, that most versatile of construction materials, including the many concrete products in current use. (b) Asphalt cement concrete; widely employed for paving roads, parking lots, airfields, etc. (c) Foundation materials, such as road base, granular backfills, railway ballast, etc.

One responsibility of a manager is to improve his human organization. Some executives believe a manager should be measured and compensated accordingly on the basis of his ability to improve the quality of his human organization. Officials in the coal mining industry have had a tough road to travel in this regard due to fluctuating coal production demands, contractual obligations, and improved mining equipment and methods. The time may have finally arrived when we are able to recruit, select, and develop men from the labor market to fill vacancies, This is particularly true of our maintenance organizations. Because of the importance of this responsible function and the types of skills required, we must develop an extensive improvement pro- gram. Anyone in the industry who fails to undertake a manpower audit and who accepts a philosophy which will not permit collective planning, organizing and con- trolling the improvement of the human element throughout his maintenance organization may certainly cause deterioration within his company.
