The Jamaica Mining Legislation requires the bauxite companies operating in the island to reclaim all mined-out lands (except those legitimately excluded) to the level of agricultural or pastoral productivity, which existed prior to the commencement of mining. If it is not possible to reclaim a mined-out area the companies are required to reclaim an equivalent area of some other land which had not previously been used for agricultural purposes, or alternatively, pay to the government the sum of $120 (US) for every acre of land mined in the particular sector. In the seventeen years since the programme commenced the companies have in general chosen to reclaim most of the mined-out lands, rather than the cheaper alternative. However, the ultimate success of the programme will depend not only on actual reclamation per se but moreso the productivity of the rehabilitated lands. There are a number of reasons why the accent has to be placed on productivity of the lands. The first is that Jamaica is a small country (4,450 square miles) with a population of nearly 2 million people. Because of its mountainous terrain it is estimated that only 35% of the land area is cultivable in crops and pastures; hence this limited area, as well as that which can be reclaimed, must be made highly productive in order to support local and export demands. The Mining companies own over 200,000 acres of land, and of this acreage, it is conservatively estimated that about 75,000 will be affected by mining and will be reclaimed. As such, the use of the land after mining can have an important bearing on Jamaica's future agricultural productivity. In the spring of 1988, Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners Ltd. Partnership, IMC Fertilizer Inc. and Homestake Mining Co., as joint venturers, were awarded the sulphur lease for Main Pass Block 299, lease number OCS-G 91372. This was one of 11 leases awarded to the joint venturers. Following the initial discovery wells in December 1988, delineation drilling confirmed proven sulphur reserves of 68 Mt (67 million long tons). Proven, recoverable oil and gas reserves are 6.2 Mm3 (39.4 million bbl) and 1114 Mm3 (7.2 billion cu ft), respectively. Development of the sulphur mine was given approval as a fast-track project in 1989. The oil and gas reserves were acquired from the original hydrocarbon lessee in 1990 and were also given fast-track status. Fast-track for these projects meant design and engineering would not be complete before construction began. Joint venture The Main Pass Joint Venture is one of 13 joint ventures formed between Freeport and three other companies - IMC Fertilizer, Inc., Felmont Oil Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Homestake Mining Co., and Texasgulf Minerals and Metals Co. Felmont has since changed its name to Homestake Sulphur Co. Texasgulf assigned its interests to its parent company. Texasgulf did not participate in the Main Pass 299 joint venture. Joint venture negotiations, anticipating a lease sale in mid-1988, began in December of 1987. This joint venture, the first of its kind, was created to acquire offshore leases, explore, develop and mine sulphur. The Interior Department's Minerals Management Service (MMS) announced a lease sale date of Feb. 24, 1988 on the first business day of 1988. This greatly accelerated the joint venture negotiations. Of the 13 leases the joint ventures bid on, 11 were awarded. Freeport holds its interest in all the leases through its ownership interest in Freeport-McMoRan Resource Partners, Ltd. Partnership. Resource Partners is the operator on all of the leases.

Close integration of mine planning and operation is a long-sought goal. Success is achieved in varying degrees depending upon mine complexity, size, and sophistication, but too often is more limited than desired. Despite tremendous strides in the development of computer-aided mine planning, digital plans usually must still be converted to error-prone paper maps and physical ground surveys for actual excavation and reclamation. However, advances in GPS, operator displays, and mobile computers now enable equipment operators to work directly from on-board digital plans. CAES offers reduced survey costs, faster field transition time and improved excavation accuracy coupled with faster, more informed decision making regarding key mining operations.

In recent years, metal-producing companies have increased their investment in automation and technological innovation, embracing new opportunities to enable transformational change. Transformation to a digital plant can fundamentally revolutionize how industrial complexes operate. The abundant and growing quantity of real-time data and events collected in the grinding and flotation circuits in a mineral processing plant can be used to solve operational issues and optimize plant performance. A grade recovery model is used to identify the best operating conditions in real time. The strategy for increasing the value of instrumentation in current plants is reviewed. An optimal Gaudin size distribution model provides augmented information from traditional sensors to find the optimal grind cut size to reduce metal losses in the flotation circuits. Sensors in flotation circuits enable an estimate of the recovery and determination of the optimal froth depth and aeration using an air hold up flotation model. A strategy of classifying data for on-line generation of insights to using operational intelligence tools is described. The implementation of a recovery/grind strategy with industrial examples in non-ferrous mineral processing is presented.

"Mine monitoring through various sensors is a vital component of successful miner safety and health programs. Data from environmental, geotechnical, infrastructure, and other types of sensors are increasingly being used to discover and mitigate health and safety concerns in underground mines. In many smaller underground mines, as well as in new development headings of larger underground mines, leaky feeder communication systems may be the only available means to transport crucial monitoring data. In addition, data transport is increasingly being delivered using Internet Protocol (IP) while older forms of serial communication are being retired. This paper presents the selection, configuration, and testing methodologies that were employed by researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to integrate commercially available land mobile data radios into an existing leaky feeder communication system to provide Internet Protocol data transport. INTRODUCTION To enhance the health and safety of their mining workforce, mine owners and operators are increasingly installing environmental monitoring and control systems in underground mines. Real-time, mine-wide monitoring is becoming a reality with the implementation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) into the underground mining industry [1]. However, not all underground mines, especially smaller mines and new development headings in larger mines, have the information technology (IT) infrastructure in place to handle the data transport requirements for the newer IP-based technologies that are part of IIoT. This was the case with a mine in the Western United States; it lacked the infrastructure to perform critical monitoring in remote headings. The mine partnered with the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH’s) Spokane Mining Research Division (SMRD) to develop and evaluate a cost-effective solution for real-time monitoring of geotechnical conditions in relatively remote sections of the mine. This paper describes SMRD’s solution to leverage the mine’s existing leaky feeder system to achieve IP data transport using commercially available land mobile data radios. DATA RADIO SELECTION The primary selection criteria for the data radios were network data format, modulation type, and radio channel spacing. The network data format decided upon was Internet Protocol. This format allowed for straightforward integration between the IP-enabled data acquisition system located in a remote heading and the network switch located in the control room. It also eliminated the added complexity of additional network hardware such as Ethernet to Serial converters. IP additionally provided a direct path to integration into higher bandwidth networks, such as fiber optic, should they become available."

The Kipushi deposit, where the Prince Leopold Mine has been installed, belongs to Union Miniere du Haut-Katanga and is located in the Belgian Congo, 20 miles SW of Elisabethville, at the vicinity of the Northern Rodhesian Border. The deposit is of the hydrothermal metasomatic vein-type; mineralisation took place, through the limestone of the, lower Kundelungu. This is a special fea¬ture of the deposit, compared to the other copper deposits of the neighbourhood, both in the. Belgian Congo and in Rhodesia. Actually, the primary mineralisation of these other deposits; is directly related to the stratigraphic systems: schistous dolomitic in the Belgian Congo and Roan in Rhodesia. Both facies are older than the Kundelungu and separated from this formation by a tectonic cataclysm. The valuable elements occuring at Kipushi are principally copper; and zinc. The deposit also contains smaller quantities of lead, precious metals and other elements including germanium.

Cyanidation tailings disposed of in a surface impoundment experience a loss of cyanide due to natural attenuation, which frequently reduces the cyanide concentration to very low levels. Quantifying cyanide losses in terms of impoundment geometry, local weather conditions and feed-solution chemistry has been largely empirical in spite of the fact that, in many cases, mining operations rely on surface impoundments to reduce cyanide to below an internally regulated concentration or below an effluent limitation. To permit a quantitative evaluation of cyanide losses in an impoundment, a computer simulation was developed to estimate the losses of free, weak acid dissociable (WAD) and total cyanide due to dissociation, photolysis and volatilization. Results of the model are compared with data collected for a North American tailings impoundment in 1998.

This paper presents a case study of two major Australian infrastructure projects that used digital engineering to facilitate design delivery: WestConnex Project (Rozelle Interchange), and Sydney Metro West (Eastern Tunnelling Package). The paper presents project overviews and building information modeling (BIM) execution and focuses on modeling techniques, software utilization, data management strategies and how the digital models helped the design-build team mitigate impacts to schedule by identifying clashes between disciplines before the execution of work. Finally, it demonstrates the positive and transformative impact of digital engineering on the design and construction of large underground infrastructure projects and highlights its role in asset management throughout the project lifecycle.

The Pioche District of Lincoln County in southeastern Nevada (Figures 1 and 2) has been an historically important producer of silver, zinc, and lead. Economic geology of districts in the Pioche area is summarized most adequately in recent reports by Tschanz and Pampeyan (1) and Gemmill (2) and only a few major aspects will be discussed here. Production in the Pioche District began in 1869 and early mining concentrated on silver-bearing fissures in lower Cambrian quartzites. In the early 1870's the Pioche District was second only to the Comstock Lode in world silver production (3). More recent mining activities have centered on the other major ore type in the area, bedded replacement of lower Cambrian carbonates by Ag-Zn-Pb sulfide ore. Production of replacement ore peaked around 1950. The present study is focused on the Pan American Mine because it is an excellent example of low grade carbonate replacement deposits, because there is little structural dismemberment, and because access was readily available. Most previous workers have suggested that both the fissure vein deposits and the bedded replacement deposits of the Pioche districts are a result of spatially related Laramide igneous activity. The purpose of this study is to determine whether ore genesis is a result of igneous activity or if mineralization might be related to late diagenetic processes such as formed Mississippi Valley "type" deposits. Stable isotopes of sulfur, carbon, and oxygen in ore and gangue minerals have been studied to determine the probable isotopic composition of the ore fluid and paleomagnetic studies of the carbonate rocks have been utilized to determine timing of mineralization. Additionally, petrographic and field studies of carbonate lithologies were undertaken in an attempt to delineate non-structural controls on ore localization. These studies are still proceeding and the results presented herein are, therefore, preliminary in nature.

"Mineral deposits require substantial amounts of energy to transport and be processed into usable form and, as such, present a real processing challenge in that the deposits are never homogeneous and orebody compositional characteristics are all over the map. Extracting the desired mineral(s) from the deposit at sufficient profit margin, despite severe fluctuations in market price, requires process automation architecture capable of supporting an integrated enterprise solution. Such an architecture will encompasses the activities of individuals, process units, process areas, plant level activities, mine management and business planning, and accounting systems. Key to the automation process is the aspect of value generation. This article brings together the various requirements for the automation of a mining enterprise and presents the different aspects of how to obtain value across the entire mining operation.Minerals’ processing sites are historically long lived, with 20-year life-of-mine not uncommon and 75 years not unheard of. Considering that hardware technology advancements are introduced every six months, or less, it is prudent to select process automation systems that adhere to “open” industrial standards versus proprietary based systems. In the minerals processing industry, the key to survival is driving the cost of production per unit volume to the lowest possible level and provide enough profit to sustain operations. Control system architecture and business information technology are rapidly becoming important tools in the quest for productivity. Getting key dynamic business performance information at the right time to the right person or process unit is crucial to successfully achieving corporate goals. The process automation architecture selected must, therefore, be able to integrate to the various networking enterprises and business systems.The mining industry is generally known as an extractive industry that is physically oriented with respect to operations and the activities in which workers engage. Large numbers of people performing manual tasks in difficult surroundings, produce variable outputs. But times are changing – and so are industry best practices. While the nature of work still consists of activities such as ore extraction, ore movement, ore concentration, refinement and logistics, automation innovations are starting to change the nature of many of the production steps. The industry has transitioned from requiring more physical activities by workers to more information management, automated control and collaboration within the operation. Humans are good at situational intervention and nonlinear reasoning and do best when empowered with an overall production perspective. Machines and automation are good at repetitive functions, steady state operation, and managing transitions. Thus, a combination of advanced technology solutions, reliable and useful information and full human contributions are necessary to mining operations for value generation."

For the development of deep hard rock mines fast access to the orebody is critical. In some cases the mineralized area is more than 1500 m (5000 ft) below surface. Excavation of shafts or declines is typically on the critical path of the project schedule. Saving time on those activities can significantly increase the net present value of the mining project. Mechanical excavation methods are a step-change in excavation performance and labor safety compared to drill and blast operations. In hard rock conditions roadheaders can not be used effectively, so disc cutting is the first choice. For excavation of declines tunnel boring machines (TBM) can be used in many cases. These provide in certain rock conditions considerably higher production rates compared to drill and blast excavation.

It was attempted to revitalize an old sulfide leach dump by increasing the oxygen content within the dump. Compressed air was introduced into the old dump. This was accomplished by drilling 300 foot angle holes into the dump surface with an Aardvark drill which holes are then cased with 1-1/2 inch perforated PVC pipe. Compressed air is injected through these cased holes during a 10 day rest cycle. The second case consists of bedding perforated polyethylene pipe at the interface between the old dump surface and the next Lift of a new dump. Compressed air is then blown through the bedded perforated pipe on a continuous basis while leach solution is applied.

A compressed-water hydraulic pulse generator (HPG) for nonexplosive blasting of rock and con¬crete is described Energy is stored in the HPG by compressing water to ultrahigh pressure. A large, fastopening valve discharges the com¬pressed water, resulting in a high-energy impulse. The HPG can be used for small-scale bench blasting by discharging the water through a nozzle that is closely fitted into a borehole. A bench blasting system requires an HPG, a drill and an indexing mechanism to allow insertion of the HPG nozzle into a drilled borehole. Systems with discharge energies ranging from 40 to 250 kJ have been used to excavate hard rock, including andesite, granite and quartzite. The largest system can excavate 15 t/h (16.5 stph) of massive quartzite based on a 2-min cycle time for hole drilling. Blasting with an ultrahigh-pressure hydraulic pulse generator was demonstrated as an effective means of excavating hard massive rock under the confined conditions of a tunnel opening or underground sloping panel. Hydraulic blasting provides a continuous mechanized mining capability that is well suited for deep-level mining and urban excavation sites where explosives are prohibited

Minera Escondida is the world's largest copper mine. Its capacity is more than 800 kt/a (880,000 stpy) of copper. The Escondida open-pit mine operates at an elevation of 3,100 m (10,170 ft). It is located in the Atacama desert about 160 km (100 miles) southeast of the port of Antofagasta. At Coloso, 14 km (8 miles) south of Antofagasta, copper concentrate is dewatered by filtration for storage and shipment to overseas markets (Fig. 1). Concentrate filtrate water, after being treated to remove suspended solids, is discharged at 60 m (200 ft) depth into the Pacific Ocean. This effluent is free of particulates. However, it does contain metal levels above US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) receiving water criterion. EPA standards are more strict than Chilean receiving water guidelines. However, a multiport diffuser provides rapid mixing of sea water with effluent to ensure metal levels in the receiving water remain below EPA receiving water guidelines. The Escondida Mine began operation in December 1990 at a rated mill capacity of 35 kt/d (38,500 stpd). Since then, the complex has since undergone three expansions. In 1996, it processed 115 kt/d (127,000 stpd) of ore. At Coloso in 1993, about 25% of the copper concentrate was fed to an ammonia leach plant for solvent extraction and electrowinng of cathode copper. This plant is designed to produce 80 kt/a (88,000 st/year) of cathode copper. In 1995, the ocean diffuser system's capacity was doubled to accommodate increased flows to a maximum 50 L/sec (793 gpm). This was achieved by extending the diffuser chamber by 32 m (105 ft) and adding 16 nozzles, which doubled the diffuser's capacity. In November 1996, Rescan Environmental Services began a field verification of the outfall/diffuser system's performance. The study's objective was to determine the performance of the outfall/diffuser system by measuring dilution factors using fluorescent Rhodamine dye and to determine if copper concentrations are below the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) water quality criterion of 2.9 µg/L total copper (EPA, 1986). Rhodamine dye was injected into the outfall/diffuser system. An oceanographic survey using an in situ fluorometer was conducted to measure dye concentrations in the effluent plume. Water column characteristics were also measured. These included current speed and direction.

The objective of this paper is to describe a study sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy during which a model was developed to optimize haulback mining procedures in single and multiple seam contour mines, The study objective was to achieve financial- based productivity increases approaching twenty percent. This paper reviews the results of the first year's Phase I activities, which include four main tasks: formulate a methodology that can be used to select equipment and mining procedures that result in optimal performance in a particular haulback mining situation; conduct field studies of representative single and multiple seam mines to obtain quantitative background information for development of the formulated methodology: develop the methodology into a useful design tool for mine operators; and prepare plans for field tests to evaluate the effectiveness of the developed tool.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, there has been a trend in the direction of larger drilling equipment and larger diameter blastholes. Although this change has improved the efficiencies and reduced the costs in many operations, it has increased the potential for damage to underground openings. In addition, in many instances one now finds more sophisticated delicate instruments, automated control facilities, and a large variety of structures in proximity to blasting activity. The combined effect of larger-scale blasting activity and its proximity to various features of interest is such that there is an increased need for a more refined analysis of blasting effects and their control. BLASTING EFFECTS ON ROCK SURFACES The Breakage Mechanism In order to develop techniques for controlled blasting, one must first understand the features of the mechanisms by which blasting causes rock breakage to occur. These features have not been easy to demonstrate, mostly due to the difficulty in making tests and observations at the high stress levels and short time durations involved. When an explosive charge is detonated, the material surrounding the charge is subjected to a nearly instantaneous, very high pressure [on the order of 1.4 to 13.8 GPa (0.2 to 2.0 X 106 psi), depending on the explosive]. If the charge is coupled to "average" rock, this pressure will pulverize the surrounding rock for a distance on the order of 1 to 3 charge radii in hard rock, and to a greater distance in softer rock (this is also dependent on the type of explosive). As the pressure wave passes into the rock, high tangential stresses cause radial cracks to appear, and the nearly discontinuous radial stress zones gen¬erated by the shock front may cause tangential cracks to appear. The extent of these cracks depends on the energy available in the explosive, how quickly the energy is transmitted to the rock, and the strength properties of the rock. The discontinuous shock front is quickly dis¬sipated, but the expanding gases generate a longer-acting pressure. A compressive pulse travels to the nearest face or internal rock boundary where it is reflected in tension. The tensile strengths of most rocks are roughly 40 to %o of their compressive strengths, so the rock may now fail in tension whereas it may have been able to support the diminished compressive phase without failure. The ten¬sile deflection typically produces a failure described as tensile slabbing or scabbing. Laboratory experiments and field experience have pretty well established that several mechanisms are involved. These include (1) the classical case of tensile parallel slabbing when the pressure pulse is reflected at a free surface; (2) failure under quasi-static compressive loading (the shape is normally irregular due to discontinuities in the rock); (3) radial cracking under the action of tangential stresses at the periphery of the expanding pressure pulse; (4) peripheral cracking at the discontinuous shock front which is quickly dissipated; and (5) additional mass shifting due to the venting of the explosive gases. The first three items have received much attention in the laboratory and the literature. The complex effects of gas venting are difficult to test in the laboratory because of the difficulty in reproducing the many weak planes and discontinuities typical of most field conditions, which play such a prominent role in determining the behavior of the rock mass subjected to blasting. Unfortunately, gas venting effects can be pro¬jected to significant distances under certain field conditions, and are sometimes difficult to control. It is not unusual for gas venting to be the overriding factor in determining the final geometric shape and physical condition of the finished excavation. Sources of Damage For the purposes of this discussion, damage includes not only the breaking and rupturing of rock beyond the desired limits of excavation but also an unwanted loosening, dislocation, and disturbance of the rock mass the integrity of which one wishes to preserve (such as mine pillars, underground openings, etc.). The sources of damage include, of course, all those physical features of the rock breakage mechanism. Each of these effects must be limited to the desired zone of breakage and excavation if the integrity of the remaining rock mass is to remain undiminished. The primary zone of rock breakage usually can be controlled in the normal process of field experimentation to determine proper charge sizes and location for primary excavation. However, it frequently happens that there is damage from sources which are more difficult to account for in the design process, which are often overlooked. These are (1) the overbreak due to poor drilling control, (2) dislocation of rock (mass shifting) due to venting of explosive gases, and (3) loosening or dislocation due to the influence of seismic waves (ground vibrations). CONTROL OF ROCK BREAKAGE Importance of Geometry In studying the rock mass and blasting design con¬siderations, it is important to keep in mind the geometric relationships among charge size, shape, and position, and the physical features of the rock mass to be preserved. The features of principal interest are the external shape and position of the rock mass relative to blasting, and the position and attitude of any weak planes in the rock mass. The Sequence of Blasting and Excavation Events Unfortunately, there are too many times when the task of preserving delicate rock is considered hopeless, and because of this attitude, no further effort is ex¬pended towards caution or control. In such cases there is often a failure to recognize the importance of the se¬quence of the procedures. Attention to this can greatly reduce unwanted effects at minimum cost. Hanumantha Rao (Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, 2013, Vol. 30,No. 4, pp. 212-219)The formation of hydrogen peroxide from water during the grinding of chalcopyrite in a nitrogen-sparged environment, as reported by Javadi Nooshabadi and Rao (Minerals & Metallurgical Processing, 2013, Vol. 30, No. 4, pp. 212-219), is questioned on the grounds that oxidation of water by the mineral is unlikely to be thermodynamically feasible. It is argued that it is more likely that any peroxide that had been formed would have been generated from residual oxygen in the nitrogen-flushed system than from the oxidation of water.The formation of hydrogen peroxide by finely divided pyrite had been reported by a number of authors (Borda et al., 2001; Borda et al., 2003; Cohn et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2006; Schoonen et al., 2010; Jones et al., 2011; Javadi Nooshabadi et al., 2013). That hydrogen peroxide is formed in the presence of oxygen in solution can be comprehended from wellestablished mechanisms. Pyrite in aerated solution is known to oxidize by an anodic process that is coupled with the cathodic reduction of oxygen (Holmes and Crundwell, 2000). The latter process has been shown to occur through the formation of hydrogen peroxide (Biegler et al., 1975; Ahlberg and Broo, 1996). The pH dependence of cathodic oxygen reduction at other sulfide minerals, including chalcopyrite (Biegler et al., 1977; Rand, 1977), implies a similar mechanism at these surfaces."

Controlling worker dust exposure on longwall mining systems is difficult because the working face area serves as an immediate return during the mining cycle and the amount of airborne dust generated is directly related to production. Since improvements in longwall mining technology have significantly boosted production levels, additional technology is needed to control the airborne respirable dust generated at present and future production levels. One concept to reduce longwall worker's dust exposure is to maintain two splits of air at the face -- a clean intake split in the workers walkway, and a return (dusty) split over the face conveyor. The U. S. Bureau of Mines has recently investigated a concept to overcome the visibility handicap of face partitions by utilizing a permeable polyester mesh. The mesh material was anticipated to provide adequate air-splitting capabilities as long as the pressure differential between the face and worker walkway was minimal. Initial testing of this concept at the Bureau's Lake Lynn Laboratory showed that notable reductions could be achieved with a 1/8 in (3.18 mm) and 1/16 in (1.59 mm) mesh opening size. Dust reductions at 100 ft (30.5 m) and 200 ft (61.0 m) downstream of source were 58 and 36 pct, respectively, for the 1/8 in mesh and 79 and 55 pct, respectively for the 1/16 in mesh. Longwall application of the 1/8 in mesh showed similar results to the Lake Lynn Laboratory tests. A flame retardant mesh was used underground with portable lighting mounted on the shearing machine for face side lighting.

"Tests were conducted to determine properties of four foam agents for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. Foam has been tried in underground mining in the past for dust control and is currently being reconsidered for use in underground coal longwall operations in order to help those operations comply with the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s lower coal mine respirable dust standard of 1.5 mg/m3. Foams were generated using two different methods. One method used compressed air and water pressure to generate foam, while the other method used low-pressure air generated by a blower and water pressure using a foam generator developed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. Foam property tests, consisting of a foam expansion ratio test and a water drainage test, were conducted to classify foams. Compressed-air-generated foams tended to have low expansion ratios, from 10 to 19, with high water drainage. Blower-air-generated foams had higher foam expansion ratios, from 30 to 60, with lower water drainage. Foams produced within these ranges of expansion ratios are stable and potentially suitable for dust control. The test results eliminated two foam agents for future testing because they had poor expansion ratios. The remaining two foam agents seem to have properties adequate for dust control. These material property tests can be used to classify foams for their potential use in longwall mining dust control. IntroductionAbout one-half of U.S. underground coal is produced by longwall mining, which allows for mining high volumes of coal but generates significant amounts of coal mine dust. This can lead to overexposures for longwall miners and possibly occupational respiratory diseases, including black lung and silicosis, which have no cure and can be disabling or fatal. The only method to avoid these occupational illnesses is through elimination of exposure to respirable coal mine dust and crystalline silica (quartz). The current occupational exposure limit for respirable coal mine dust is 1.5 mg/m3 during each shift that a miner is exposed in the active workings of the mine or in mine facilities (Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), 2015a). When respirable quartz is present, the mine must maintain average concentrations at or below 0.1 mg/m3. If the mine exceeds the 0.1 mg/m3 respirable quartz dust concentration, then the applicable respirable dust standard is reduced, calculated as 10 divided by the percent quartz present (MSHA, 2015b)."
