The advantages of using vertical pulsed columns as replacements for conventional mixer/settlers in the uranium industry have been known for some time. The advantages of the columns offer include a reduction in real estate for the plant, elimination of diluent evaporation and crud formation. This paper presents the findings of laboratory tests of pulsed columns extracting copper from pregnant leach solutions and also discusses potential advantages of the pulse column in copper solvent extraction.

One of the objectives of today's mine superintendent is to increase his equipment availability. To this end we have seen improved scheduling procedures, preventive maintenance programs and extensive drive training and operating procedures. However, until recently, one area that has changed little in the past twenty years is the method of refueling and servicing mine equipment. In looking at mines across the country continually one encounters the hazardous oil soaked ground, the hand held fuel nozzle and the maze of hoses of the "traditional" fuel stop. By adapting technology developed in the construction and aircraft industry, current fueling and servicing practices can be easily improved. The result will be less nonproductive time, less downtime from engine failures and increased security from major refueling fires. The time saved almost amounts to having another truck in the fleet! One feature of the improved servicing practice is the implementation of high flow fueling. For trucks now on the market, a flow rate between 120 and 150 gam is feasible, about 90 gam greater than current practice. This flow rate could be increased even further as larger trucks come into use. A second idea borrowed from the aircraft industry is the use of positive lock type connection nozzles that automatically shut off when flow stops. These may be used for fuel, water, oil and hydraulic systems to eliminate spillage and assure that clean fuel, oils, and water are delivered to the vehicles. The reduction of fuel spillage lessens the threat of major fires resulting: in equipment damage and loss. Eliminating fire hazards will become even more important as the turbine engine with its lighter, more volatile fuels come into common use.

NTRODUCTION Surface subsidence monitoring is the most effective means for investigating the nature of, and developing the techniques for pre¬dicting the surface movement and deformation process. However, because of imperfection in survey equipment and field practices, the surface movement data collected from field survey are not error-free. Also due to lack of proper numerical techniques for computing surface deformation from the measured surface move¬ment data, a relatively large portion of the subsidence data col¬lected could not provide information other than surface movement. In a paper by Luo and Peng (1992), the sources and magnitude of errors in the measured surface movements using an electronic total station in subsidence survey are discussed. If the errors in the measured surface movement components are left untreated before calculation for deformation indices (i.e., slope, strain and curva¬ture), the errors will be carried over to the deformation indices and enlarged if improper numerical procedures are used in the calcu¬lation. It should be noticed that in protecting structures affected by ground subsidence, accurate surface deformation indices are much more important than surface movement. In order to improve the accuracy of the collected surface movement data and the calcu¬lated deformation indices, a number of numerical procedures are also proposed in the same paper. The proposed techniques include: a data smoothing technique for data pre-processing; and a number of numerical methods and/or procedures for calculating surface deformation indices from the measured surface movement data. DATA SMOOTHING Because of various factors, the measured surface movement data always contain errors, small or large. In order to better utilize the collected data, a data smoothing method is proposed to correct the errors in the measured movement data. The method uses the same concept as the influence function method (e.g., Knothe, 1957) on which many existing subsidence prediction methods are based. The data smoothing method makes necessary corrections on the measured movement for the point of interest according to not only the measured movement at this point but also those at the surrounding points. The contribution of a surrounding point in making the correction for the point of interest is inversely propor¬tional, in exponential form, to the distance between them. Lord Robens, Chairman of the National Coal Board of England announced recently to the world press plans for construction of the largest bulk terminal in Western Europe. This should result in annual freight savings of 22.4 million dollars and between 150 and 190 million dollars of new export business. These are rather substantial amounts for any mining enterprise. Or to put it another way, opportunities to make substantial savings in the delivered price of a highly competitive commodity such as coal are few and far between. One area where such opportunities still exist is in the economical; movement of bulk materials between producer and consumer.

A prototype, self-contained mine refuge station air supply sys- tem was tested in an underground metal mine to verify it's ability to keep oxygen and catbon dioxide levels at acceptable concentrations in an emergency situation. In this test, 25 volunteers were assembled and sealed in a functional underground refuge station for a period of 24 hours, without the benefit of the standard com- pressed air supply. The prototype system was designed to: 1) operate on a self-contained power supply for a period of at least 27 hours; 2) supply oxygen at a metered rate; and 3) remove car- bon dioxide by re-circulating refuge station air through soda lime scrubbing beds. During the test period, the catbon dioxide concentration remained at an average of 2500ppm and oxygen concentration stayed between 20.2% and 20.6%. The volunteers found the prototype easy to use and seemed confident in its ability to provide a safe atmosphere. The test showed that this technology could become part of an underground mine's refuge station emergency equipment.

Stability assessment of entry roofs is an essential precursor to all underground design. Both multi-seam interaction and longwall mining can subject entries to radical changes in the surrounding stress field. Such loading changes frequently produce instability and failure in the roof, floor and pillars. Roofs are shown to be vulnerable to stress-induced failures, particularly when the load is unsymmetrical. To predict the effects of changes in stress field, roof failure conditions under increasing loads were studied using finite element analysis and body loaded photoelastic models. A large range of geologic conditions were evaluated and incorporated into the model using Monte Carlo methods. Entry analysis using the model showed the roof to be particularly vulnerable to shear with the location of the failure site changing to meet loading and geologic conditions. Results were correlated with field data to determine stress levels at which failure could be expected to occur. Based on this research a roof stability model SESAME was constructed for roof stability evaluation under specified loading conditions.

Enclosed cabs have been used for many years to isolate workers on mobile equipment in the mining industry for health and safety reasons. These enclosed cabs create a microenvironment for workers where they can be either more protected or more vulnerable to contaminants. Over the past decade, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has performed substantial research efforts to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of underground and surface mobile mining equipment. In these efforts, NIOSH has partnered with mining companies, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and manufacturers of filtration and pressurization systems in a synergistic effort to reduce respirable dust and improve the air quality inside these enclosed cabs. Various field studies over this time have shown an array of results ranging from very minor to very significant reductions (protection factor: 3-89) in respirable dust levels inside these enclosed cabs. In addition to and concurrent with the field work, NIOSH also performed a comprehensive laboratory study to evaluate all the factors involved in cab filtration and pressurization systems and identified those factors that were most significant for an effective system. From this comprehensive research effort, the key components for an effective filtration and pressurization system have been identified in an effort to provide the best air quality to equipment operators inside of enclosed cabs of mobile mining equipment, thus minimizing respirable dust exposure.

DTX is a 1.3-mile-long rail extension being constructed by Transbay Joint Powers Authority to extend Caltrain rail service and future California High Speed Rail service to downtown San Francisco. It includes a 3,352-foot-long mined tunnel with a cross section varying from 50 to 60 feet wide and 43 feet high to accommodate two- and three-rail tracks. DTX will be excavated in mixed-face and Franciscan Formation with ground cover ranging from 40 to 85 feet. This paper discusses how mined tunnel design has evolved since the initial preliminary design phase over 10 years ago. The current design concept for tunnel construction is also discussed.

The US minerals industry, as well we know, has been hit hard by the recent recession and is faced with what is projected to be a slow recovery. Even so, there was an underlying feeling of optimism at American Mining Congress' International Mining Show in Las Vegas, NV, Oct 11-14. More than 25,000 people attended during a particularly rough financial year, dispelling fears that attendance would dip sharply below 1978's 30,000 plus tally. The equipment expositionheld every four years-was the largest show of its kind this year in the Western Hemisphere in terms of exhibit space, providing an extensive view of mining-related equipment. In addition to the nearly 700 exhibits occupying more than 445 hm2 (11 acres), 20 technical sessions were held covering topics ranging from minerals availability and the state of the mining industries to communications, computers, and accounting. Government officials were well represented, with six US senators and five US representatives participating in various convention functions. Sen. Paul Laxalt (R-NV) was the keynote speaker at the welcoming luncheon. Other senators involved in the show included Howard W. Cannon (D-NV), Pete V. Domenici (R-NM), James A. McClure (R-ID), Frank H. Murkowski (R-AK), and Steven D. Symms (R-ID). Representatives on the program were Joseph M. Gaydos (D-PA), Guy Vander Jagt (R-MI), Don Young (R-AK), Jim Santini (D-NV), and Ceil Heftel (D-HI). There were also many international vistors at the show, including exhibitors from Australia, Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Sweden, South Africa, and West Germany. Equipment Highlights Equipment and services featured at the exposition ranged from aerial mapping to wire rope. Aisle space alone between exhibits exceeded 8 km (5 miles). And the companies represented ranged from small businesses to large corporations. Some of the company products described here are representative of the many exhibitors in attendance. Atlas Copco's extensive display of rock drilling and tunnel and shaft boring equipment featured its Boomer H-201, the newest addition to its line of underground drifting rigs; the ROC 306, a new track-mounted, high pressure down-the-hole drill rig; a new hydraulic surface crawler drill, the ROC 712H, designed for small and medium-size holes in quarries and small open-pit mines; a computerized analysis system, CARE (see page 1570), designed to project productivity and operating costs for various mining operations; several electro-hydraulic loaders, including the new rail bound LM E60 and LM E80, and two Hagg-loaders-the 7HR and 10HR-that use two digging arms to rake and guide muck; a mechanized blasthole charging system; rock bolting equipment and its new Swellex roof bolting method; Sandvik Coromant drill steel and bits; and its new Jarva R200 raise boring machine.

The Metropolitan St. Louis Water District’s Project Clear is a 28-year program targeting wastewater capacity throughout St. Louis, MO. The extensive program includes the Jefferson Barracks Tunnel, running parallel to the Mississippi River at 2 m ID and 5,400 m long. A rebuilt Robbins Main Beam TBM began boring but hit challenging conditions about 2,400 m in, including water inflows. A larger 4.1 m Robbins Main Beam machine will complete the remaining 3,050 m in limestone, dolomite, and shale. The TBM will utilize a high-powered, high breakout torque cutterhead along with enhanced 360-degree probing & grouting capabilities to detect any karst formations.

Greater awareness of the increasing need to develop supplementary energy sources is accelerating us towards many basic decisions regarding future utilization of mined energy materials -- uranium, coal, oil sands and oil shale. The latter material comprises a major potential source of oil which will require creation of unusually large and low-cost underground mining systems. In this paper, the author briefly outlines and analyzes several of the factors which continue to provide the somewhat unique character of oil shale nine planning and mine operation.

The increased use of sensors to facilitate automation has led to an explosion of data. As data sets grow in size, their use becomes more complex. Therefore, there is an incentive for reducing the size of the datasets, as long as this does not compromise information gleaning. With this in mind, this project explored basic aggregation as a viable alternative to amassing large amounts of data. The goal of the project was to determine if one would arrive at different conclusions had they analyzed aggregated data instead of raw data. In a mine, operational data is typically used for tracking process statistics, correlation between factors, autocorrelation and multivariate models (for a factor of choice). Therefore, this project compared results from such analyses when it was conducted with aggregated data (AD) with the results of analyses conducted with raw data (RD). The data consisted of one-minute-apart readings from a semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill on the horsepower, feed rate (tons per hour), rotations per minute (rpm), noise, recycle (tons per hour), density (% solids) and bearing pressure (psig). This data was aggregated by averaging five and 10 continuous (one-minute) observations. Changes in statistical measures between the two approaches were typically within 5% of each other. Differences in correlation coefficients between RD and AD(s) were also within this range. Autocorrelations present within RD were preserved in AD, as long as the time lags were scaled for the amount of aggregation. Regression and neural network models were also developed for power consumption. The prediction performance of developed models was similar whether one used raw data or aggregated data. Overall, it appeared that aggregating the data based on 5- or 10-minute time spans would not have resulted in conclusions (from simple or complex analyses) being different from using raw data. In other words, whether one had used raw data or aggregated data, the conclusions would have been the same, suggesting that time domain aggregation, a common industry practice, is a good alternative to storing high-density data in this case.

A heavy mineral deposit about 1.6 km (1 mile) in length, 0.13 km (0.08 mile) in width and averaging about 3 m (10 ft) in thickness is exposed approximately 130 km (80 miles) east of Denver, along Interstate 70, in Elbert county, CO near the town of Limon. The deposit is exposed in a geomorphic feature known locally as Titanium ridge. The dominant heavy minerals, accounting for about 70% of the total heavy-mineral suite by weight, are ilmenite, garnet and zircon. The mineralized zone appears in a series of visually interpretable facies that are stacked vertically and represent subtidal, forebeach, backbeach, washover fan and aeolian depositional environments. These paleoenvironments are analogous to depositional environments represented by a modern heavy-mineral bearing facies tract on St. Catherines Island, Ga. Thus, Titanium ridge provides evidence that heavy-mineral accumulation models for late cenozoic deposits in the Georgia and Florida coastal plains are applicable to heavy-mineral deposits of the Western Interior subsurface and, by implication, the Western Interior Seaway, extending from Mexico to the Canadian Arctic.

Over the past decade, the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry's injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked and injury rate. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992-2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent. Mining Engineering, 2011, Vol. 63, No. 11, pp. 73-79. Approximately 7 billion tons of soil, rock and ore are currently being excavated in open pit mines and quarries on the North American continent at the present time. As the depth of excavation increases and the grade of ore being mined reduces, the safety and economy of the stability of the pit slopes becomes increasingly important. The magnitude of the potential influence on economics can be appreciated from the results of recent full scale field studies by Kennecott Copper Corporation at the Kimbley pit near Ely Nevada (Merrill, 1968). This pit was originally excavated with an average wall slope of 45°. Based on detailed studies it appeared that a slope of 610 would be stable. Subsequent excavation to this slope proved the original pit could have been steepened by 16° during production.

Classification system efficiency (CSE) is a simple metric that can be used to measure and increase ball milling circuit efficiency. It is defined as the percentage of the ball mill energy being used to grind target (oversize) particles. This paper describes CSE analysis conducted for a variety of operations with related improvements in circuit efficiency ranging from 3 to 30 percent. The achievable CSE for any given ball milling circuit is described, providing the means to determine the extent to which every plant can benefit from increasing grinding circuit CSE.

This research is the result of a geotechnical study carried out in a natural slope in an Open Pit mine in Southern Peru, highlighting earthquakes as an important cause of instability within the case study presented. This leads to analyze the stability of a slope, according to the safety factor and thus consider a future construction in its environment according to the identified requirements. There are known disasters at national and international level that involve human lives because of the lack of analysis of slope stability conditions, which based on the results will allow to control and to take adequate corrective measures. These mass movements are classified whether they are soils or rocks, considering the mechanism and type of rupture, as well as the presence of water, the speed and magnitude of the movement. The movement problems are due to factors of inherent nature and constitute a reason to perform a calculation study to analyze and estimate the safety factor of each of the evaluated cases

The need for dimensionally stable filled polymer composites has spurred the quest for materials that possess a negative coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Finding minerals and materials with a negative CTE large enough to counteract the substantial CTE found in polymers proves challenging. Much research has been per-formed over the last decade to uncover various materials that possess this unusual behavior. A list of materials that have demonstrated negative properties are discussed, as well as the experimental use of one such material (ZrW2O8), in a polymer matrix composite. In response to a request from the Mine Safety and Health Administration, the Bureau of Mines has recently completed a respirable dust survey of 18 U.S. coal preparation plants. Of these, three were essentially free of dust problems. Respirable dust exposure of workers in the remaining plants depended on the time spent in the dusty areas. In five of the plants surveyed, Bureau tests showed that in some areas worker exposures could exceed Federal dust limits in less than 2 hours.

In the United States, the occurrence of underground mine fires/explosions continue to decrease; however, they pose great danger to the miners and any subsequent mine rescue teams and/or fire brigades. Tragically, 19 coal miners lost their lives in 2006 at fires or explosions. Fires/explosions can devastate a mine and cause its permanent closure. It is vitally important to obtain accurate information on the gas content (concentration and composition) of the mine atmosphere after the event so that appropriate action can be instituted to rescue any trapped miners while not exposing the mine rescue teams to unnecessary hazards. Additionally, the fire fighting techniques (spraying water, sealing, etc.) will be dictated by the gas content. Finally, the gas content will determine when it is safe to recover the mine. The gas content of the air can be determined using detector tubes, handheld instruments, portable instruments, or gas chromatographs. No single instrument is suitable for all analyses. Each type of instrument has its advantages and disadvantages. This paper discusses these attributes.
