The risk that water quality will be degraded by mining activity can be evaluated using risk analysis techniques. Water quality impacts can occur where water-rock interactions with tailings, waste rock, or leached ore lead to increased loading of constituents into surface or groundwater. Constituent loads contributed by mining facilities are determined by the migration route and chemical evolution of mine water. Mass load contributions from mines can be determined by estimating the prototype pore water in contact with mining waste, predicting the rate and timing of flow, assessing the degree of geochemical attenuation, and modeling chemical mixing with natural surface or groundwater. Mining facility siting and design measures can alter the chemical evolution of mine water by varying the quantity or quality of flow. Stochastic risk management techniques provide a powerful tool for quantitatively identifying the environmental consequences of various siting and design alternatives.

Improving the mineral industry's tarnished image describes in a nut- shell the reason why the Speakers Bureau of the Tucson Subsection of the AIME was formed. Let's go back in time about 3 years to the fall of 1971. Literally thousands of bills detrimental to the mineral industry were being introduced into Congress and State Legislatures. Unfortunately, many were being passed and signed into law. Clean air and water, zero pollution, preserve the environment, ecology, biodegradeable, wilderness were the words that the self- styled ecologists and environmentalists were preaching. The mineral industry either sat mute or in place of acting, reacted in a way certain to attract a maximum amount of bad publicity with a minimum amount of rhetoric. A mining company president, for example, commenting on the primary air standards in Arizona was reported by the press as having said, "we'll shut all the smelters down and put thousands of Arizonans out of work if we have to meet the Arizona standards." Or another defending a poorly planned highly visible open pit nonmetallics operation, "we'll take the whole mountain down if we want to, and nobody can stop us" and still another manager of Operations, "the bottom line is all that counts, to hell with all of this environmental nonsense."

This paper is presented from the viewpoint of the mill operator and maintenance supervisor. Its purpose is to highlight the things that have been accomplished by the mill designers to lighten the load for the maintenance superintendent and to reduce the overall costs for the plant operator. The complexity of plant design, the civil and structural engineering problems encountered when the satisfactory maintenance layout is accomplished are appreciated, and the writer is fully aware of the complexities of these problems. However, it is not the purpose of this particular paper to dwell upon these problems, nor to emphasize or de-emphasize the problems of the civil, mechanical and electrical engineers. It is simply that the paper will attempt to review what these people have accomplished in spite of the many technical problems. This paper then is prepared with the operator and maintenance people?s viewpoint. What is their definition of design for maintenance? It is the writer's interpretation that the various design concepts which mean improved maintenance are such items as (I) maintenance areas, (2) laydown space for maintenance materials in specific maintenance jobs, (3) the inclusion of bridge cranes in the plant and specific design of the craneways to accomplish flexibilities for the cranes, and (4) the location of the piece of equipment to allow maintenance people to work around the equipment - - - this specifically includes the orientation of the particular piece of equipment.

In 1960 the management of International Salt Company made the decision that all waste material from the Watkins Glen plant would be stored in underground salt cavities. The cavities which they contemplated using had been depleted of salt to a point where continued operation would have impaired their structural stability. Originally, the waste to be disposed of included vacuum pan bleeds, cinders, contaminated salt and sewage. It was proposed that this material, in a slurry form, was to be injected into the salt cavity through one of the abandoned wells. Brine, displaced from the cavity, was to be recovered from an adjacent well and subsequently injected into the Cherry Valley limestone, This Cherry Valley limestone which underlies a large portion of north central New York contains a connate water with high concentrations of ammonia, hydrogen sulphide and the chlorides of calcium, magnesium and sodium. A number of questions were immediately raised on various aspects of the technical feasibility of the project. Of major concern was the buildup of insolubles adjacent to the bore of the injection well. Another pertinent question was the carryover in the displaced liquor of finely-divided, mechanically-suspended particles. Criticism was leveled at the inclusion of sewage. Engineering studies were started by the company's Mineral & Mines Development Department and on April 3, 1961 a preliminary feasibility report was issued.

Introduction Compania de Carbones de Chile (Cocar SA) has brought into production Chile's first large-scale, open-pit coal mine, located in the Magellan Province. The US $65 million project includes a 1.1-Mt/a (1.2-million stpy) subbituminous steam coal mine and a mechanized bulk loading marine terminal with water depth sufficient to receive 60 kt (66,000 st) Panamax vessels. The loading terminal will be one of the largest in Chile. The Pecket coal project is expected to save Chile about $40 million in energy production costs and a further $100 million in oil imports, or about 25% of the country's oil import costs. Pecket coal will generate electricity for Codelco and will also supply general electricity needs for northern Chile. The Pecket coalfield is located on the Brunswick Peninsula, about 30 km (19 miles) northeast of Punta Arenas, the provincial capital, as shown in Fig. 1. Pecket is part of a large, coal-bearing basin. It extends from Punta Arenas 250 km (155 miles) north to Puerto Natales and across the border into the Rio Turbio coalfield in Argentina. "INTRODUCTION Since the introduction, several decades ago, of the first concepts of tunnel boring machines (TBMs), the unremitting increase of mechanized and automated tasks and the reduction of manual tasks carried out by human operators have gone hand in hand with the continuous improvement of these machines. In the present state of TBMs, the replacement of worn cutting tools is a critical, tedious, and dangerous manual operation especially for earth pressure balanced (EPB) and slurry TBMs. For such pressurized TBMs, hyperbaric interventions are used. They consist in replacing the pressurized soil/mud inside the chamber with compressed air that balances the face pressure. The operators can then ""dive"" into the chamber; however, because the human body cannot naturally undergo pressure changes, they have to follow strict procedures that have been developed for subsea divers, based on decompression stops. Indeed such interventions are actually quite often performed by professional deep-sea divers. The pressurized TBMS are consequently equipped with a manlock that allows for the required compression and decompression cycles. Hyperbaric interventions increase risk to the operators and require long decompression procedures that increase the TBM idle time and reduce its efficiency. At higher pressures, over 3.5 bar (ITA Report No 10, 2011), specific equipment and special gas mixes and/or saturation techniques are recommended (Lamont, 2012). Such procedures are even more expensive and time consuming although the duration of work in the pressurized area can be very limited for health and safety reasons. Contractors are therefore increasingly interested in automating these operations to reduce the risks to human workers and improve the TBMs performance. Moreover, the demand for new, ambitious and challenging tunneling projects (very deep, high pressure boring) is ever increasing, but the supply of suitable TBMs is limited and the risk from working in the hyperbaric environments becomes increasingly unacceptable. Impact of hyperbaric interventions The UK Health & Safety Executive has analyzed the consequences of working in intermediate pressure compressed air. The retrospective study of decompression illness (DCI) indicated that at certain pressures its incidence was around 2% of all exposures. More worryingly it showed that over 20% of the exposures commonly undertaken by shift workers in tunneling (those over 1 bar pressure for 4 hours or more) resulted in DCI. It was concluded that on some contracts up to 50% of shift production workers experienced DCI at some time during the contract, a situation which was considered to be wholly unacceptable (Lamont, 2006)."

"INTRODUCTION Lundin Mining’s Eagle Operation, located in Marquette County, upper Michigan consists of a mine and concentrator that process a Ni-Cu-(PGE) ore. The mine itself is an underground operation and the ore is trucked from the Eagle mine site 66 miles to the Humboldt mill where both nickel and copper concentrates are produced. Operations began in 2014 and continued with an average production of approximately 23,000 tonnes of Ni and 20,000 tonnes of Cu per year for the first three years of operation. The Humboldt Mill, currently operated by Lundin Mining, processes the nickel/copper ore from Eagle Mine and performs the concentration through several stages of flotation. Originally built in 1954, the Humboldt Mill began operations as an Iron Ore processing facility, and was converted to a gold processing plant during the 1980s. Various groups owned the site after closure of the gold operation. Eagle purchased the Mill in 2008 and invested more than $280 million to clean up historic mine waste and refurbish the plant (see flowsheet in APPENDIX). This paper will overview the ramp-up of the operation, and discuss some specific areas that went well and some that could have gone better during the design phase. HIGH LEVEL DESIGN CRITERIA Coarse ore arrives from the mine and is stored in a building with a capacity of 10,000 tonnes. Ore is crushed in three stages to a final product size of 100% Passing 12mm. Crushed ore is conveyed to the mass flow fine ore bins, which have a live capacity of 3000 tonnes. Crushed ore is fed to two parallel 900 HP ball mills, charged with 3” high chrome grinding media, and ground, in closed circuit with hydrocyclones, to a p80 of 110 microns in the flotation feed. Soda ash is added to the mills based on process water hardness. Cyclone overflow passes to the bulk conditioner where Sodium Isopropyl Xanthate (SIPX) and Methyl Isobutyl Carbinol (MIBC) are added. The slurry is pumped to the rougher bank for bulk flotation. Rougher concentrate is fed to a 500HP vertically stirred regrind mill and is ground to a p80 of 50 microns, using 5/8” high chrome balls. Rougher tailings report to the tailings thickener. The regrind cyclone overflow is sent to the single stage cleaner bank followed by two scavenger banks. The cleaner concentrate is pumped to the copper-nickel separation circuit. Cleaner tailings report to the tailings thickener. In the copper-nickel separation circuit, the pH is raised to 11.5 and a copper concentrate is recovered from the bulk cleaner concentrate in two stages, namely the copper roughers and the copper cleaner columns. The concentrate from the copper flotation columns is the final copper concentrate. The tailings from the columns return to the head of the copper-nickel separation. The nickel concentrate is the copper rougher tailings stream."

The Office of Coal Research has been supporting the development of processes for producing synthetic pipeline gas from coal since 1964. .Some of this work has also been jointly supported by the American Gas Association. The work has progressed through laboratory investigation, to bench scale, to pilot plant. It was far from a crash program, generally being fund-limited.. As of one year ago, we had reached the following position: 1. The Institute of Gas Technology HYGAS. process pilot plant in Chicago, Illinois, was in the process of being finally completed. This plant is designed to produce about 1,500,000 cubic feet of pipeline-quality gas per day from 75 tons of coal. 2. The Consolidation Coal Company, CO2 Acceptor Process pilot plant in Rapid City, South Dakota, was well._ on its way to completion. This plant, designed primarily for lignite and subbituminous coals, has about one-half the design capacity of the HYGAS plant. Additionally, the initial construction did not provide for cleanup and methanation; only the preliminary synthesis gas is produced. 3. The Bituminous Coal Research, Inca, BI-GAS pilot plant was in a preliminary design stage. A site had been selected near Homer City, Pennsylvania, to build this plant, planned to consume 120 tons of coal per day. Meanwhile, as you are all well aware, a natural gas shortage was developing in this country. Much has been published about it, so I will not. bother you with further details. Conventional iron ore balling circuits exhibit undesirable surging behavior which is known to result from uncontrolled occurrence of the mechanisms of nucleation, coalescence and layering. This study was undertaken to investigate the mechanism of pellet growth by layering. Several laboratory experiments have been carried out to delineate the effect of feed moisture content and feed quantity. This paper presents an analysis of the experimental results and a simple model to describe the layering process.

"This article describes, through the presentation of five cases-history, technological advances that the Authors together with Tunneling Contractors devised for coping with adverse geotechnical conditions. It is believed that by introducing these new elements in a method that has proven its value in Italy and abroad for the last 40 years, the umbrella arch method, due to its versatility and simplicity, can become a universal method for conventional tunneling in very poor ground conditions. After a description of common faults and mistakes in applying the method, 5 projects are presented which demonstrate that self-drilling pipes give excellent results in terms of performance a zero volume loss, while, function of the ground conditions the various grouting mixtures used, such as expansive jet-injected cement-base grouts and bi-component resins, extend the use of the umbrella-arch in variety of grounds even in presence of water-bearing lenses. The case-histories provide successful applications in different conditions.BASIC FEATURES OF UMBRELLA ARCH METHODThe umbrella arch method provides a short support of the tunnel vault just ahead of the excavation face. The method foresees the drilling and installation of peripheral, sub-horizontal steel pipes in the ground, followed by their grouting. The umbrella arch method is also known as forepoling, steel pipe umbrella, reinforced protective umbrella or simply “umbrella”. The umbrella arch method does not have a static function because the immediate stabilization of tunnel section is entrusted to the internal shell of steel ribs and shotcrete. The “umbrella” provides a pre-support of the excavation which has to be stable for an adequate length and duration permitting the installation of the next steel rib and shotcrete under conditions of safety (Figure 1).The umbrella-arch provides pre-reinforcement of poor ground around the tunnel perimeter in a simple and flexible manner that is adaptable to different ground conditions. In fact, it is possible to vary the number and length of pipes, the distance between them, their diameter and thickness as well as the overlapping length of two succeeding umbrella arches. The versatility of the umbrella arch technique allows its application to: clay deposits, granular alluvial deposits, moraine and debris materials even when containing large blocks, heavily jointed, foliated and tectonically disturbed rock masses."

The Main Pass sulphur and oil deposit is located at Main Pass Block 299 in the Gulf of Mexico, 30 miles east of Venice, Louisiana, in 210 feet of water. The deposit was discovered by Freeport-McMoRan and its joint venture partners, IMC Fertilizer and Homestake Mining, in late 1988-early 1989. The sulphur deposit contains 67 million long tons of recoverable sulphur. The sulphur occurs in bio-epigenetic limestone replacing anhydrite caprock on top of a salt diapir. Recoverable reserves of 39.4 million barrels of oil and 9.1 billion cubic feet of gas are also contained in the limestone caprock and in supracap sandstone stringers.

A comprehensive project has been completed at the University of British Columbia that focused on the development of a commercially competitive composite cable bolt. Laboratory evaluation consisted of pull tests, preliminary shear tests, grout column testing and scanning electron microscope evaluation of the composite cable bolt. Field implementation at five underground mines throughout Canada were completed for technical and overall performance evaluation of the new product. The project began in 1989 under the sponsorship of HDRK Ltd., a consortium of mining companies including Inco, Noranda and Falconbridge Ltd. The objective was to develop a cuttable cable bolt that would serve as support for a continuous miner within a hardrock environment (Mah, 1994). The bolt was required to be cuttable by a continuous roadheader without adverse effects to equipment, personnel and the milling process. From the beginning, the focus was to employ existing cable bolt installation technology (Goris et al., 1994) whereby the cable bolts are grouted within a 4.8-cm-diam (1.08-in.diam) or larger employing a portland cement grout having a water:cement ratio between 0.35:1 to 0.4:1.

BHP Copper has grown, in just over six years, from a minor participant to the world's largest privately owned copper producer. BHP Copper's major asset is the world's largest copper mine -Escondida in Northern Chile. Ten years ago investing in Chile was considered high risk. Today, Escondida represents an investment of approximately US$2 billion. Reward is the result of managed risk and Escondida is a clear demonstration of both. The Ok Tedi copper and gold mine in Papua New Guinea represents a Rubicon of risk and a retrospective on reward in a developing country on the doorstep of a developed one. The story of these two mines encapsulates risk in the mining industry.

Since start-up in 1985 the Cannon Mine has produced and shipped a 170 g Au/tonne (5 oz Au/ton) flotation concentrate to various smelters for gold and silver recovery. Several processed have been investigated to economically produce dore' at the mine site from the refractory concentrate. This paper describes recent laboratory and pilot scale test work utilized in the process design and engineering feasibility study of a 73 tonne/day (80 ton/day) pressure oxidation and CIL facility. The designed pressure oxidation circuit utilizes a series of vertical autoclave units operating at 170°C (338"F) and 1.4 MPa (200 psig). Projected operating costs are discussed.

The Coastal Water Authority's 2,740mm/2,590mm (108 in./102 in.) pipeline, known as the Northwest Lateral Project, will transport raw water from an existing pipeline over 14.3 km (8.9 miles) to the City of Houston's East Water Purification Plant. The new pipeline crosses under Houston Ship Channel and Greens Bayou in tunnels at approximately 30.5m (100 feet) and 25.9m (85 feet) depths, which present unique experiences in tunneling under open bodies of water in the Gulf Coast's soft ground conditions. An earth pressure balance TBM is being used for the deep tunnel sections where the ground demonstrates high overload factors and variable conditions ranging from clays to silty sands. This paper discusses the design approach for the tunnels and shafts, ground conditions, constructability, and selection of the primary lining system.

The Fabrica Mine of the Brazilian iron ore company Ferteco mines on an extremely inhomogenous ore deposit. A large amount of the crude ore consists of fines minus 100 micron which cannot be sold without further treatment because of its chemical and physical properties. In order to make full use of the mined crude ore an expansion program has been realized which incorporates among others a concentrator to produce classified blast furnace ore , sinter feed and pellet feed. The pellet feed is converted in a 2.5 million tons per year Lurgi Dravo plant into high grade pellets. The paper discusses the selection of the concentration process, the pelletizing process and describes the experiences with the operation plant during the startup and the first years of operation.

"More than 800 million tons of material will be excavated during large underground projects such as tunnels, undergrounds and power plants by 2030 in Europe only. The raw material excavated is often classified as waste, which involves environmental impact and transport issues: landfill areas, CO2 emissions and noise. But how can such massive amounts of material be transported, processed and deposited? Using the example of the AlpTransit Ceneri Base Tunnel (15.4 km), we show that suitable excavated materials can be used sustainably as a primary resource for tunnel concrete. This requires careful planning of the installations and storage areas by the client, timely building of the processing plants and other handling facilities outside the tunnel and a continuous evaluation of the raw material quality. 1. INTRODUCTION Spoil management is a central element of large construction projects. The systematic reuse of suitable excavated material not only saves natural resources, reduces transport distances and landfill volume, but can also decrease overall construction costs. Ideally, all of the concrete needed for tunnel lining can be produced with this on-site material. Such a natural resource management concept was applied for the construction of the new Gotthard Base Tunnel (L = 57 km). Spoil management concepts are, how-ever, difficult to implement and call for innovative techniques, sophisticated logistics and organization. In the context of large projects, environmentally friendly transport, processing and storage of millions of tons of excavated loose material represent another logistics challenge (Simmen & Lieb, 2010). This paper shows key factors that led to the successful completion of spoil management at the Ceneri Base Tunnel, which constitutes a part of the AlpTransit Gotthard Project (Figure 1)."

In the last five years Eldorado Resources Ltd. (ERL) has undergone a major expansion and modernization of its uranium refining and conversion plants. A new refinery for processing yellow cake to UO3 was constructed at Blind River in northern Ontario and started up in 1985. Its rated capacity is 18,000 t/a uranium as UO3. At Port Hope, Ontario, ERL's new UF6 conversion plant has been constructed. This plant started up in 1984. It utilizes the novel, wet-way process to produce UF4 and gives the company a UF6 production capacity of 14,500 t/a U. Also at Port Hope is Eldorado's ceramic UO2 powder production facility, commissioned in late 1980. It has a capacity of 1700 t/a uranium as UO8. With the completion of these capital projects, Eldorado has the largest and most up-to-date refining and conversion facilities in the western world. This paper reviews the refining process and process design. The methodology used to start up the Blind River plant is described as are some startup difficulties, solutions that were developed, and the resultant current operation.

Techniques of testing perlite require a combination of art and science. The modifications made to the perlite Corp. vertical laboratory furnace include addition of instrumentation, flowmeters, vibrators, automatic feeders, and regulators. The basic testing sequence consists of expanded density, furnace yield, compacted density, percent sinkers, and compaction resistance. These tests are modified versions of those specified by the Perlite Institute. This sequence is designed as a preliminary evaluation of a material's suitability for horticultural-aggregate end uses rather than a detailed measure of filtration capability.

At the 2017 ICGCM-conference in Morgantown, WV, a case study was presented with measurements of the upward surface movements or uplift after the closure of two neighboring coal mines (Winterslag and Zwartberg, Belgium). One was closed in the sixties, and the other closed in 1988. The study was based on satellite data (Radar-interferometry or InSAR). The analyses showed both a significant variation of uplift values above the mined area and the surrounding zones, and a variation of the uplift rate as a function of time. In other words, the phenomenon of uplift is complex. At that time, it also was clear that more research was needed to better understand this phenomenon, e.g., an identification of the various mechanisms that are relevant for the process of uplift and the quantification of the various impacts. A systematic analysis of all relevant parameters resulted in a framework that forms the basis for the analytical calculations of uplift values. These calculations show that the main impact is due to changes in the hydrostatic pressure. However, the expansion of the softest parts, i.e., the collapsed or goaf material, is not only important, but the expansion of the (stiffer) non-collapsed strata layers due to a change in pore pressure also must be integrated into the model. For the case study, the partial flooding of the underground after closure of the mine that was abandoned in the sixties is integrated into the model. Larger stiffness values also are applied for this mine, in comparison to the values of the more recently closed mine. Overall, a very good correlation is observed between the InSAR-measurements and the calculated values along a north-south transect.
