INTRODUCTION In order to understand the transport and deposition of radon daughters in mine atmospheres, it is necessary to know the variation in the attachment of the daughter atoms to particles as a function of particle size, composition, number density, relative humidity, temperature, and radon concentration, the free gaseous diffusion coefficients of the daughters, and the variation in the mass transfer of the activity, both free and attached to particles, to mine surfaces as a function of particle size distribution, surface roughness of the mine walls, and the flow conditions. If all of these parameters are known in a model system, it should be possible to understand the transport and fate of the airborne radioactivity in real mines under certain well-defined flow conditions. There have been a number of recent investigations of the attachment of radon decay products to particles 1-4, but there are still a number of unanswered questions regarding the process. However, it is clear that for most real mine atmospheres, the vast majority of the activity is attached to particles. The size distributions for the activity-bearing airborne particles have been studied 5,6, and it has been found that most of the activity resides on particles with diameters in the range of 0.05 µm to 0.3 µm with an average mass median diameter between 0.1 and 0.2 µm. The behavior of the unattached radon daughter species has also been recently studied[ 7], and many of the previous problems regarding the value of the diffusion coefficient for Po-218 have been resolved. A major problem in the understanding of the airborne transport of radioactivity in mines is the lack of detailed knowledge of mass tranfer to and fluid flow over rough walls under fully developed turbulent flow conditions. This paper will report the progress on a project that is designed to obtained that information. MATHEMATICAL MODEL DEVELOPMENT Deposition of particles on smooth surfaces in turbulent flow has been extensively studied. A comprehensive review of these results has been prepared by Sehmel 8. There has not been such a comprehensive study of particle deposition on rough walls under such flow conditions. In recent years, only a single model has been proposed to explain such deposition 9,10 and in both of these papers the flow structure in the rough walled pipe was not taken fully into account. As part of the work being conducted on this project, a more complete model was outlined in a previous report [11]. The basic theory will be reviewed to provide a context for the flow measurements to be reported. The flux of particle deposited on the walls of a pipe in a turbulent flow is derived from the one dimensional form of Fick's law as given by [N = Dpdpp/dr (1) where N is the flux of particles deposited per unit area per unit time, D is the total eddy diffusivity of the particles, p is the airborne concentration of particles, and pr is the distance measured from the center of the pipe. The rate of deposition is best expressed by a deposition velocity Vp = NIP pb (2) where P b is the mean particle concentration in the sulk flow. The shear radius, V/ut and the shear velocity, u , are used to calculate a nondimensional distance, and velocity, respectively, where v is the kinematic viscosity of the fluid. The nondimensional form of equation 1 is given by Vd = DP dpp(3) V dr+ where Pp = Pp/ Ppb(4) By integrating equation 3 from the rough wall stopping distance, S , to the center of the pipe, the deposition velocity can be obtained. In order to make this calculation, it is necessary to have accurate descriptions for the particle eddy diffusivity, stopping distance, and shear velocity in order to insure that the influence of the flow structure has been properly accounted for. "This paper presents the evaluation Montana Tech completed for the Western Energy Company Rosebud Mine relating to the benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies over traditional methods for topographic surveys. These technologies include Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), photogrammetry, and laser scanning/LIDAR. Utilizing these technologies, large areas such as reclamation areas and cast blasts can be surveyed in a timely manner for use by the mining operation. The areas that were evaluated were the improvements in the safety of employees and the time required to collect data. In addition, there is also a potential cost savings for the operation, all while not affecting the accuracy of the data that is collected. PROJECT BACKGROUND Accurate topographic survey data is critical to successful surface mining operations. It is used for mine planning and design as well as permit compliance. Currently, employees typically collect survey data using GPS equipment or total stations. These methods can be dangerous, as they require employees to work near large operating mobile equipment, edge of high walls, and on piles of stacked steep-sloped loose material. Aerial and satellite photographs, performed by a contractor, can be used to obtain some of this information, but it is expensive and may not be attainable during overcast conditions. Montana Tech, along with the Rosebud Mine, conducted research on the accuracy, cost, and other benefits of survey data collected using novel technologies. Some of the methods studied include, but are not limited to, Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) or Vehicles (UAV), photogrammetry, and laser scanning. These methods were evaluated to determine if these technologies provide mining companies with a safer, cost effective, and accurate method to collect data for surface mining operations. The project scope was to evaluate various surveying techniques to determine which techniques would be applicable for the Rosebud Mine and complete a trade-off study comparing the new techniques with currently used methods. The trade-off study included an analysis of the technological differences between the methods, safety and legal considerations for the new techniques, operational limits, and the costs associated with each technique. Working with the Rosebud Mine team, techniques were selected for field trial and accuracy comparison. This paper presents a literature review of applicable technical papers and a summary of the Federal Aviation Administration regulations for UAS, followed by a study comparing conventional GPS topographic surveys with UAS based systems and laser scanning systems. The comparison of the various methods was broken into the following four categories: operator safety analysis, time comparison, survey accuracy, and cost analysis. After all of these portions of comparison were completed a recommendation was provided based on the evaluation that was performed."

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal, soluble over a wide pH range. Tl levels may exceed discharge limits in mining-influenced water associated with processing gold, lead, cadmium, zinc, and copper ores. In this work, the effect of sodium permanganate (CARUSOL® C liquid permanganate) on Tl removal from mining wastewater was studied. Factors influencing Tl removal, namely permanganate dosage/demand, coagulant and flocculant use, order of chemical addition, and co-existing metal ions were examined. The results show that permanganate addition is very effective at removing Tl to below target limits and can provide a unique solution for improving wastewater quality and optimizing overall treatment costs. In addition, several on-line monitoring techniques were evaluated for process optimization. The Hach DPD Free Chlorine method was optimal, allowing plant operators to rapidly and easily spot check effluent samples for excess permanganate dose.

Coal mine drainage, which occurs predominantly as acid mine drainage in the East, is a serious contaminant of surface and groundwater systems (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). Treatment of this pollutant can be very costly and is often difficult to achieve (Appalachian Regional Commission, 1969). A major source of coal mine drainage in surface waters is polluted ground- water discharge, therefore treatment of surface water does little to combat groundwater contamination. Prevention of the formation of coal mine drainage and restricting its entrance into the groundwater protects both surface and groundwater systems. The formation of acid mine drainage may be inhibited by preventing contact between toxic spoil, air, and water (Grim and Hill, 1974). This may be accomplished by surrounding toxic spoil with a relatively impermeable barrier, thus restricting groundwater and oxygen flow through the toxic zone. Toxic spoil packages constructed in this manner would minimize the entrance of acid mine drainage into the groundwater system, allowing dilution by uncontaminated water to occur. If successful, concentrations of coal mine drainage would be reduced below toxic levels.

The author was privileged to find employment as a uranium mill chemist for The Anaconda Company while working his way through school in the mid-1950s. He then served Anaconda in various technical and management positions until 1980. This paper describes the prevalent technologies employed by uranium producers, briefly describes various mines and mills in the U. S., and memorializes a few of the thousands of men and women who contributed to the U. S. Uranium Boom. Following isolation of uranium as an element by M. H. Klaproth in 1789, uses of uranium were confined primarily to pigments, glass coloring agents, and ceramic glazes. In 1896, Antoine Becquerel found that uranium is radioactive, releasing particles and energy as it decays. In 1898, Pierre and Marie Curie isolated radium from uranium and learned that it can be an effective treatment for some types of cancer. In 1939, it was discovered that the isotope U235 is fissionable1 . Up to this point, nearly all uranium production was from pitchblende concentrates made in Bohemia, Canada, and the Belgian Congo. In 1938, only about 5 percent (23.85 short tons) of global output was produced from ores of the carnotite mineral that were being mined in the U.S. By the early-1950s, physicists in many countries had begun to recognize the potential for nuclear chain reactions. Ernest Rutherford (UK), Frederick Soddy (UK), and Leo Szilard (US) explained transmutation of elements and formulated the principle of “atom splitting”. In 1934, Marie Curie’s daughter, Irène, and her husband, Frédéric Joliot, identified uranium as the most viable source for this new form of energy. The basic fission process was unraveled by German scientists in December 1938. After Hitler’s army seized the uranium deposits in Czechoslovakia, many feared that Germany would build the first nuclear weapon.

This paper is a review of research and development on geothermal energy extraction in Japan especially on hydraulic fracturing. First recent geothermal developments in Japan are outlined in Part I. An increase in the production rate of geothermal wells may be highly dependent on the geothermal well stimulation technology based on hydraulic fracturing. The hydraulic fracturing technique must be developed also for geothermal energy to be extracted from hot, dry rock masses. In Part II, the research on hydraulic fracturing and field application are reviewed.

The bioleaching of mineral sulfide pulps in a bench-scale rotating drum reactor has been studied. The reactor includes horizontal paddles in the inner wall for lifting of the mineral pulp. The performance of the reactor was tested in the bioleaching of a refractory pyritic gold concentrate in the presence of pure Thiobacillus ferrooxidans strain (ATCC 19859). The concentrate was efficiently bioleached at 50% pulp density with the drum operating at 0.5 -1.0 rpm Attempts of bioleaching the concentrate at the same pulp density in conventional stirred reactor showed severe inhibition of bacterial activity. The results demonstrated that the drum reactor allows to operate at much higher pulp densities than the conventional stirred tank reactor. This behavior is explained in terms of an improvement of the bacterial activity due to a better control of the attrition of the mineral particles.

Isa Cement Factory is equipped with a N.S.P. kiln of capacity of 3 million metric tons per year, which is the largest of its type in the world. Geographically, it is situated in the south- western tip of the Mainland of Japan (Mid City, Yamaguchi Prefecture) and is bordered by the scenic Akiyoshi Karstic Plateau which is world famous for its huge stalactite grotto.

Barrick Goldstrike Inc.'s Betze/Post Open Pit is located at the north end of the Carlin Trend, in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A. (see location Map, Figure 1). About ten open pit gold mines exist on the trend, which strikes northwesterly, through the north end of Eureka County and into Elko County. The final Betze/Post Pit configuration is shown in Figure 2, Pit Configuration. The final pit will be about 2450m long by 1550m wide, elongate in a west-northwesterly direction. The pit straddles the Barrick/Newmont property boundary. The highest elevation of the pit perimeter is 1800m at the south wall, with the east end pit bottom elevation at 1200m.

The coal mining industry must be able to compete with alternate sources of fuel for the utility and industrial customers. If the industry is unable to control transportation costs, either due to government interference, or for other reasons, then mining costs must be kept down. Australia, South Africa, Canada, (and later Colombia) will take larger shares of the export market if mining costs are not kept competitive. The government's environmental regulations must be met without incremental increases in mining costs. Entrepreneurial instincts must be retained by the industry to provide for their investment in the future. What are the Problems with Existing Research? Government funding for coal mining research has been reduced or virtually eliminated. BCR (Bituminous Coal Research) is now a membership- supported organization, but its primary focus has been on health and safety-oriented research. BCR, however, is now attempting to widen its scope and conduct other types of research. There are almost no funds in EPRI's (Electric Power Research Institute) program for coal mining research. Large mining companies do some research for their own purposes and needs, but this is proprietary and therefore results are not shared with the remainder of the industry. The mining industry as a unit is not undertaking productivity (systems) oriented research in any common or cohesive manner.

It is the hope of the author that this paper, largely a compilation of observations and opinions built up over 20 years of experience in cold and remote areas may be of some help to others in designing better plants for the future in the north. The north is not as difficult to operate in as the better story tellers make it appear to be. ()n the other hand for 6 months of the year the cold is always there, and it seems to be waiting for someone to make a mistake. The simplest things can shut a multi-million dollar plant down at -4n' F with a 4n M.P.H, wind. It only takes one man door improperly latched to freeze up all the pumps on the bottom floor. Someone can poke a one inch hole in an outside wall in July and six months later while you are having Christmas dinner, a watchman will call up to report that the whole plant is flooded because the main water line just froze up and burst. Basic things to remember in plant design for cold and remote areas are: everything in these areas is more expensive due to long and difficult supply lines. Fuel is expensive and would be a major cost item even if it were not expensive, due to the extended periods of low temperatures. Building volumes should therefore he kept to an acceptable minimum. Service areas on the other hand must he adequate, because maintenance generally has to be conducted inside in a heated area. Supply vehicles for instance have to get completely inside the building to unload. If you try to unload a supply vehicle with the door open at -50° F, you won't be able to find the vehicle for fog and if you take more than 5 minutes half the water lines in the plant will freeze up. People in a remote area are expensive. The capital investment per employee may be as high as $30,000; with fringe benefits per annum costs of an employee will he as high as 812,000 per year regardless of basic wage rate. It

INTRODUCTION The work of the metallurgical engineer engaged in developing a leach, solvent extraction electro- winning process usually begins in the laboratory and generally proceeds via pilot plant testing before finally resulting in a commercial operation. The path leading to the development of the eventual process will involve a test program on leaching in order to derive information on the amenability of the copper-bearing material to acid dissolution, under various conditions. Commonly in North America the leach process of choice is either dump or heap leaching but it may also be in-situ leaching or the treatment of mine waste- waters and bleed streams. In the past, agitation and vat leaching have also been included in the list of options. Currently the economics of copper production dictate that only material of mineralogy and grade, capable of being leached without prior milling, will lead to a viable process. This is not necessarily true in other parts of the world where grades are higher and milling costs lower and therefore this paper con- fronts all the techniques available to the metallurgical engineer in terms of the evaluation of the solvent extraction process. Understanding the objectives of a laboratory and pilot plant evaluation of a solvent extraction route is important and these are described in some detail in this paper. Of at least equal importance is understanding limitations of such a test program and this aspect of process development is also discussed with reference to the kind of equipment and experimental practices that have been shown to produce results consistent with the objectives. WHERE TO BEGIN? At the inception of a project much information is developed on the variables of the leach process and indeed in some instances the type of leach that best suits the ore to be treated is the subject of intense investigation (Wadsworth 1983). The decision to treat the leach solution by solvent extraction focuses attention on the selection of the extractant most suited to the nature of the chemical composition of the solution. A laboratory screening program will probably need to be arranged in order to assist in narrowing the options and the following is suggested for this initial screening. Selection of a Representative Leach Solution This is preferably obtained from leaching a representative sample of the ore under conditions likely to pertain in the commercial leach circuit. As the conceptualized circuit flow sheet will undoubtedly involve the recycle of aqueous solutions via the leach, then it is desirable to know the nature of and the likely level of the impurity ions in the solution as well as the concentration of copper. The other most important parameter that is required is the free acid (Anon, Acorga Analytical Method) content of the solution. As a rule of thumb, it is always true that recovery across SX is maximized as the pH of the leach solution rises. Whilst a high pH may be desirable for SX recovery, it is not always desirable for the pH (or more correctly, the free acid) of the leach to rise too high. The working range, therefore, tends to be between 1.5-2.5 pH. At an early stage in process development it is likely that a number of ill-defined conditions will exist, making it difficult to decide on typical leach conditions in which case the screening tests should be carried out using a synthetic leach solution prepared from laboratory chemicals. In doing this the copper and free content should be carefully controlled along with the appropriate addition of major impurity ions as their sulphate salts. Optimal gold recoveries largely depend on efficient liberation of the gold or gold-bearing minerals as well as on maximum access for the lixiviant. Thus, crushing and grinding may become the most costly part of gold ore processing. It may, in fact, represent 50% to 70% of a plant's operating costs (Michaelis, 1989). The increasing significance of refractory gold will require even more cost-efficient comminution of ultrafine sulfides and/or native gold. Transitional ore zones with semi refractory gold may respond to direct leaching if better particle fracturing is being achieved (Baum, 1991, 1993a). Many oxide ores have been left in the ground because they were unsuitable for heap leaching since conventional comminution could not facilitate economic gold extraction. Also, the costs of conventional bal1 mill operations did not permit the recovery of gold from many ultrafine, low-grade refractory ores. As shown by Marsden et al. (1993), the trend to treat ores with progressively lower grades will involve power-and leach-efficient grinding applications. Our current laboratory work shows that high-pressure grinding roll (HPGR) Polycom grinding may enable many mining companies to add large amounts of these "non-leachable" ores to their current heap or mill leach feeds. This finding may dramatically change the economics of many oxide gold ore operations and may add significant reserves to ores amenable to direct cyanidation.

Assessment of the possible impact of existing and future mining projects located in remote areas may be difficult and costly. This may have an adverse effect on the process of issuing mine permits and development of new mines. A remote sensing based land cover change assessment methodology presented in this paper is a promising avenue to render this process more meaningful, precise and affordable. It has been applied to a case study of the Oil Sands Mining Development in the north-east of the Canadian province of Alberta. Recently, the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) is a place of unprecedented growth of open-pit mining operations. This study was focused on the primary impact onto the landscape and vegetation resulting from exploration and, mining development. This impact was assessed using an information extraction method applied to two LANDSAT scenes. The analysis based on derived land cover maps shows a 8.64% decrease of natural vegetation in the study area (715,094 ha) in 2001 relative to 1992. It is demonstrated that the methodology presented here provides reliable results and is fully applicable for the assessment of the environmental impact of large scale mining operations.

This paper summarizes recent developments in modeling of underground coal slurry haulage networks for determination of optimum design and operating parameters. The model presented here is based on a stochastic dynamic programming formulation, applicable in any typical room-and-pillar and/or longwall mining configuration commonly practiced in the United States. The formulation and the structure of the model is general enough to handle design problems involving more than one face and mining method. Given the stochastic operating characteristics and a system layout, the model can be used to determine the equipment configuration and operating regimes that minimize the overall unit cost of coal haulage.

Nine western states contain significant barite deposits, but most deposits are in Nevada, which has been the principal western producer for more than three decades. Nevada produces about 85% of the total United States production, but about one-half of the barite consumed in the country is imported. Approximately 95% of the barite is used in drilling muds. Sharply decreased oil and gas drilling, starting in early 1982, severely depressed the domestic barite industry. Other problems for western barite include long distances to the areas of major drilling, high railroad-freight rates, and increased barite imports. Bedded deposits, formed by submarine exhalative processes, account for almost all western production, and reserves are large.

Historically two basic approaches of production sequencing have been formed in the theory of open pit mine design. The first approach implements a technological discretization of the pit space within the ultimate pit outlines where the minimum working width is the limiting technological factor. The second approach uses a pseudo-economic discretization based on the implementation of analytical methods for designing intermediate/ultimate pit outlines and the concept of pit shells generation. The paper offers an elaborate analysis of both approaches used currently for discretization of the geological medium into working benches and modelling the working zone of open pit mine. The analysis is extended with a new vision for unification of the mining systems in open pit mine design under the form of a classification. A comparison of the approaches is provided to illustrate their advantages and disadvantages with regard to the implementation of the principle of waste deferment as one of the main principles of mine planning that exploits the time effect of money.

Twenty-five years ago, when I began my sales life marketing minerals, there was little or no contact between sales people and production people. In those days, it was not uncommon for me, as a salesman, to learn of production problems existing in my company from my customers. Today, in my opinion, any successful mining company must keep production people fully aware of circumstances that effect service to the users of the product. Basically, feldspar is presently consumed by the glass and pottery industries the same as 100 years ago. The consuming public little realizes the origin of so many things they use daily and take for granted. Feldspar is utilized in the glass that contains our Coca-Cola, Pepsi, wines, liqueurs, beer and the assorted gob¬lets from which we drink these lovely brews, the industrial glass upon which all industry depends, the bathroom plumbing fixtures that make life so different from the days of the out-house, the beautiful and durable china we enjoy at mealtime. The electricity we use requires insulators that demand feldspar. In our home ap¬pliances, automobiles, toys and airplanes, we find feldspar. I could go on and on, hopefully soliciting your help in making our taxpaying and non-taxpaying fellow man aware of the burdens he may acquire when unthinking, over-enthusiastic environmentalists foist unnecessary hardships upon the mining industry. Feldspar is marketed primarily sized from 20 mesh to 325 mesh. The glass industry requires feldspar ground 20 mesh to 40 mesh size; the pottery industry requires material from 150 mesh to 325 mesh size. One large glass plant may require up to 100 tons per day and more, whereas a small plant may use less than 5 tons per year. The development of slurries of coal and water as a boiler fuel replacing No. 6 fuel oil has been actively pursued at the Atlantic Research Corporation since 1976. Funding for this effort has been provided by the U.S. Department of Energy, the Electric Power Research Institute, and by corporate funds. The name ARC-COALTM has been selected for these slurries. Stable coal-water slurries with bone-dry coal loadings between 62% and 77% have been prepared, evaluated rheologically, and successfully burned in an experimental furnace without the assistance of other fuels. The advantages and properties of these slurries, including combustion results, are reviewed. Also discussed is the pilot line used for processing barrel quantities of fuel and a pilot plant capable of processing 600 bbl/day, currently being designed.
